Twelve-year-old juvenile accused in Glendale Heights stabbing On Wednesday, May 26, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Glendale Heights Chief of Police Douglas Flint announced that Judge Brian Jacobs has ordered that a Glendale Heights juvenile accused of stabbing another juvenile in the abdomen will be released to the custody of his mother on home detention lockdown. The juvenile will be fitted with a GPS monitoring device and will be allowed to leave the home only

for doctor or attorney appointments and school. Additionally, the juvenile was ordered to have no contact with the victim or the victim’s twin-brother and is ordered not to possess any weapons.

The juvenile, who is 12 years old, is charged with two counts of Aggravated Battery, a Class 3 Felony.

On Tuesday, May 25, at approximately 4:08 p.m., officers with the Glendale Heights Police Department

responded to a call of a fight near the 500 block of James Court. Upon their arrival, officers found the victim, a 12-year-old male, suffering from two apparent stab wounds to his abdomen.

The juvenile was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention. He is expected to recover from his injuries. It is alleged that the juvenile and victim were engaged in a dispute via Snapchat. It is alleged that the pair agreed to meet to fight. It is

further alleged that when the pair met at James Court, the juvenile took out a Batman novelty knife with a 3” blade on both ends, stabbed the victim twice and then ran away. The defendant was found a short time later approximately one hundred yards away from where the stabbing allegedly occurred.

“I would like to commend the Glendale Heights Police Department for their quick response and apprehension of the suspect in this case,”

Berlin said. “Thankfully, the victim’s injuries are not considered to be life-threatening. What I find particularly disturbing about this case is the age of the accused.”

The juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 1, 2021, for a status hearing.

About Jack Andrews Andrews is an Addison native and an alumnus of Addison Trail.

He has been with District 88 since 2015 and has demonstrated the Jack Andrews qualities of an outstanding leader and has made a positive and lasting impact on the students, staff, parents and community members of Addison Trail and District 88. His career began at Addison Trail as a special education teacher, coach and sponsor. In those roles, Andrews demonstrated excellent teaching skills, innovation, creativity, initiative and connections with students.

Andrews was then promoted to Department Head of the District 88 Transition Program, where he expanded the vocational opportunities for students, connecting their families to more support services and building strong workplace and community partnerships throughout the

district. More recently, he has served in two key leadership roles at the district level. As the Learning Services Coordinator, Andrews oversaw the special education programming, financial resources, policies and procedures of the district.

He fostered positive and collaborative relationships with parents, coordinated our services to parochial schools and led all state and federal compliance efforts in the area of student services.

During this very traumatic year, and in the wake of the tragic loss of District 88 Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton, Andrews stepped into the role of Interim Director of Human Resources (HR). He worked tirelessly to learn all of the legal aspects of HR and established the necessary HR policies and procedures to support staff during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In this role, he demonstrated high levels of ownership, care, attention to detail, tremendous organizational skills and unwavering commitment to the district. His efforts allowed our students to continue to be educated during this health crisis without disruption. Along with his HR responsibilities, Andrews also was asked to coordinate several multidistrict COVID-19 vaccine clinics.

He worked with community leaders to ensure staff members at all of the school districts within our communities had the opportunity to be vaccinated, as well as local senior citizens and

The importance of a bipartisan January 6 Commission

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I was disappointed in the Senate’s failure to pass the bill to create a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

I strongly supported this bipartisan legislation in the House, and during an Oversight Committee hearing in May, I questioned former Acting Department of Defense Secretary Christopher Miller about the inexcusable 1 ½-hour gap between Mayor Bowser’s request for additional support to defend the Capitol and his authorization to use the D.C. National Guard.

As I said in an MSNBC interview, we’re left with many unanswered questions about this day—including why the Department of Defense took so long to deploy the National Guard to protect the Capitol and whether domestic violent extremist groups coordinated this attack.

I intend to work alongside my colleagues from both parties to investigate the events of Jan. 6 to ensure that this never happens again.

Supporting the U.S. Postal Service In a recent op-ed in the Daily Herald, I explained how the new 10-year plan from the USPS only hurts everyday Americans and small businesses.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is a point of pride and sometimes even a lifeline for many Americans, but Postmaster General DeJoy has been implementing policies that have left the organization struggling to meet the needs of the public for on-time delivery.

Many members of our community have told me about lost and delayed mail, including medications and bills, due to changes made by the Postmaster General, such as reducing standards for delivery speed and reliability. Postmaster General DeJoy’s plan for the next decade would dramatically lower first-class and other delivery standards.

That’s why I introduced my Delivering Envelopes Judiciously On-time Year-round (DEJOY) Act to maintain the USPS’ traditional service delivery standards. Americans have depended on the USPS for centuries, and they need to know that they’ll be able to do so again.

Climate change is obvious to most observers, but what is not always obvious is the detrimental effects that changing weather patterns have on our larger ecosystems far from the source. There are easy steps state government leaders can take right now in Illinois to curb some of the devastating yet preventable effects.

Most people don’t know it, but extreme weather affecting Chicago or a farm in Kane County can lead to environmental degradation thousands of miles away. In fact, pollution from Illinois has helped create a wildlife dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Here’s how.

In recent years, record flooding and tornadoes have caused more erosion and pushed more runoff from city streets and wastewater treatment plants into our streams and rivers. That runoff includes excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) that destroy aquatic wildlife. Years of inaction to combat this problem in Illinois and states across the upper Midwest has led to a nutrient pollution build up at the bottom of the Mississippi River where no fish or wildlife live for thousands of square miles.

\It’s an aquatic wildlife dead zone, all because of pollution in our neighborhoods and farms in Illinois.

State government leaders can—and should—take tangible steps to solve the problem, but we don’t have time to waste.

In Illinois, conservationists and farmers across the state have come together to reduce nutrient loss, runoff, and its effect on the state’s food and water supply, but more must be done. A diverse coalition ranging from the Illinois Corngrowers and American Farmland Trust to the Illinois Environmental Council and Sierra Club are pushing the state legislature to get serious about solutions to this problem by promoting soil and water conservation programs outlined in Senate Bill 2474, the Illinois Partners for Nutrient Loss Reduction Act. In 2015, the state took a momental step forward by creating the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy to identify ways to direct resources toward improving water quality in Illinois and downstream states along the Mississippi River. But since 2015, we have fallen dangerously behind the goals set to reduce nutrient loss.

To meet these important goals, the state must do more to reduce nutrient loss from erosion and runoff in the agriculture industry. One easy solution is by planting cover crops.

In 2019, the Illinois Department of Agriculture launched a pilot

program called the Fall Covers for Spring Savings program to offer discounts to farmers who plant cover crops, a type of plant that is used in conservation and crop production practices that reduces nutrient leaching, soil loss, and runoff. Cover crops improve soil health, and healthy soil can store carbon dioxide with the potential to offset the effects of climate change.

The cover crop pilot program is widely popular and has been an overwhelming success, but it needs to be extended and expanded. This year, the program ran out of funds after only 12 hours, and the program only has enough funding to support farmers on 50,000 acres (less than 2 percent of Illinois’ farmland). That is a drop in the bucket in a state with 27 million acres of farmland.

That’s why the state legislature must act now to do more to promote cover crops and other conservation programs included in Senate Bill 2474. We simply cannot wait any longer to do everything we can to stave off the worst effects of climate change, and that includes getting serious about nutrient loss.

The investment is small, but the return for our environment is priceless.

A win for the Warriors

Junior Franky Goles (No. 3) of the Willowbrook boys volleyball team hits a serve during last week’s regular-season finale against Hinsdale South. The Warriors rallied to defeat the Hornets 19-25, 25-23, 25-14 in the June 3 match in Villa Park.

Willowbrook finished the regular season with a 6-7 record. The Warriors went 4-2 in West Suburban Gold Conference play, finishing third in the conference standings.

Downers Grove South went 6-0 in the conference, while Hinsdale South went 5-1.

Last week’s match between the Hornets and Warriors did not count in the conference standings. After winning last week’s opening game, Hinsdale South held an 11-4 lead in the second game. Willowbrook dominated the rest of the match. Goles had 11 digs for the Warriors. Senior John Donovan handed out 13 assists. Willowbrook opened the IHSA post-season with this week’s match at Timothy Christian.

Willowbrook finished its season with a 13-10 record. The team’s entire 2020 season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s Willowbrook team had to deal with a couple of coronavirus-related shutdowns during its season. “This was the craziest of crazy years,” said Wisner in describing the Warriors’ 2021 season after Friday’s game. “For two months, for a couple of hours a day, there was a tiny bit of normalcy, and that’s all that matters. For two hours they forgot everything around them, and it was just baseball.”

The Willowbrook boys track and field team won the championship in Friday’s seven-team West Suburban Gold Conference Meet at Downers Grove South High School. The Warriors defeated Downers Grove South by the narrowest of margins in the team standings. Willowbrook accumulated 146 team points. Downers Grove South tallied 145.5 team points.

Proviso East finished third in the team standings with 76 points. Addison Trail claimed sixth place with 38 points.

Willowbrook’s individual champions in the conference meet included senior Enrique Cruz and junior Alex Simmons; both Warriors earned two first-place finishes. Cruz won the shot put (16.01 meters) and the discus throw (44.12 meters). Simmons ran to a victory in the 400-meter run (51.82 seconds). Simmons also delivered a win in the triple jump (12.36 meters).

Senior Tyler King delivered a championship performance for the Warriors in the 800-meter run, which he finished in 1 minute, 59.25 seconds.

Junior Cristian Lager supplied a firstplace effort in the 300-meter hurdles event, which he won in 43.32 seconds.

King added a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run (4:36.94). Senior Sean Kramer claimed second in the 400-meter run (52.33 seconds). Sophomore Mike Wangler placed third in the 100-meter run (11.34 seconds) and fourth in the 200-meter run (23.55 seconds).

Lager contributed a fifth-place showing in the 110-meter hurdles (18:07 seconds). Junior Cayden Loth sprinted to a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter run (11.96 seconds).

Willowbrook’s 4 x 100-meter relay team of Wangler, Loth, Kramer and junior Jaylon White produced a second-place finish (44.61 seconds).

Junior Andrew Hasler contributed to the Warriors’ victory in the conference meet by finishing second in the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches) and fifth in the triple jump (11.31 meters). Simmons placed third in the long jump (19 feet, 11½ inches).

Addison Trail senior Hamza Kittaneh won the title in the conference meet’s 110-meter hurdles event. Kittaneh completed the race in a firstplace time of 16.25 seconds.

Senior Cole Greaves of the Blazers ran to a third-place finish in the 400-meter run (52.43 seconds). Junior John Taci of Addison Trail placed sixth in the 400-meter run, which he completed in 55.83 seconds.

Senior Dylan Moran of the Blazers ran to sixth-place finishes in both the 1,600-meter run (4:52.68) and the 3,200-meter run (10:43.62). Junior Alex Martinez turned in an eighthplace effort in the 1,600-meter run (4:57.51). Martinez posted another eighth-place showing in the 800-meter run (2:10.18).

Addison Trail junior Patrick Campbell finished third in the triple jump (11.53 meters), fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (44.33 seconds), sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (18.37 seconds) and seventh in the long jump (18 feet, 5¼ inches).

The Warriors and Blazers will compete in this Friday’s 16-team IHSA Class 3A sectional at Hoffman Estates High School.

The sectional competitors will try to earn berths in the IHSA Class 3A state meet, which will take place on June 19 at Eastern Illinois University.

The Willowbrook baseball team’s 2021 season ended with Friday’s 4-3 loss to Reavis in an IHSA Class 4A regional semifinal game in Villa Park.

The Warriors finished the season with an overall record of 13-10. Reavis improved to 19-9 and advanced to this week’s regional final against Downers Grove South (25-3). The Mustangs went 17-1 in West Suburban Gold Conference play. Downers Grove South’s only conference loss came against Willowbrook.

Junior lefthander Jacob Skinner delivered a solid pitching effort for

the Warriors in Friday’s post-season opener. Skinner pitched a complete game, striking out eight batters and allowing four walks over seven innings.

Reavis scored one run in the first inning and added three runs in the second inning. Skinner held the Rams scoreless for the remaining five innings.

“All four runs were unearned,” said Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner after Friday’s loss. “He [Skinner] pitched very well. He was amazing.”

the bottom of the third inning to cut the Rams’ lead to 4-1. Sophomore Isaac Sobieszczyk singled and scored the Warriors’ first run on a single by junior Jake Kutella. Willowbrook left the bases loaded in the inning.

Trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Warriors loaded the bases with no outs.

Sophomore Eddie Munson, who led off the inning, reached base after being hit by a pitch. Sophomore Alex Chaltin then hit a grounder toward second base.

The Rams tried for a force-out at second, but couldn’t make the play cleanly, giving the Warriors runners at first and second. Sobieszczyk then walked to load the bases. Kutella then singled to cut the Rams’ lead to 4-2.

grounder, which Reavis converted into a double play. Chaltin scored on the play to cut the lead to 4-3. Junior Bennett Fleming then hit a flyout to center field to end the game.

“I wish it would have ended differently,” said Wisner, who noted that this is the first time in 10 seasons the Warriors did not advance to a regional final. “We battled. We gave it everything we had.”

Wisner also noted the joy of simply having a season after the entire 2020 campaign was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This was the craziest of crazy years,” Wisner said. “For two months, for a couple of hours a day, there was a tiny bit of normalcy, and that’s all that matters. For two hours they forgot everything around them, and it was just baseball.”

The Willowbrook girls soccer team completed its 2021 season with last week’s 4-1 loss to Glenbard East in an IHSA Class 3A regional semifinal match in Lombard.

Willowbrook scored less than two minutes into the June 2 match to take an early 1-0 lead. Junior Brooke Vandergrift scored the Warriors’ goal.

The Rams delivered a goal with about 28 minutes left in the first half to even the score at 1-1. Glenbard East junior Maia Zatarski scored all three of her team’s second-half goals to lead the Rams to the victory.

Glenbard East advanced to Friday’s regional final against undefeated Benet Academy. The Redwings beat the Rams 5-0 in Lisle.

The Rams completed their season with an overall record of 9-4-2.

Braden wins two sectional races

Willowbrook senior Daylee Braden won a pair of races at last week’s IHSA Class 3A Lyons Township Sectional. Braden will compete in this Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Braden won the sectional competition’s 200-meter run in 25.95 seconds. She delivered her other first-place finish in the 400-meter run, which she completed in 58.52 seconds.

Willowbrook junior Lily Weder finished second to Braden in the 400-meter run. Weder completed the race in 59.91 seconds. Weder earned a berth in the state meet with her second-place sectional effort.

Zatarski completed her hat trick when she scored with 11:40 to play on an assist from the goalkeeper—freshman Sophia Sommesi—who set up the goal with a long punt down the field.

“It was a tale of two halves,” said Willowbrook coach Julio Del Real after the season-ending loss to the Rams.

“The first half was pretty even. Both teams were getting opportunities. In the second half, Glenbard East just came out harder. After their second goal, we couldn’t get anything going.”

Del Real referred to the Rams’ strong defensive effort against Willowbrook senior Gracie Tumilty, who scored a team-leading 29 goals during the season.

“They were double-teaming her and triple-teaming her at times,” said Del Real.

The Warriors’ 11-4 record in the 2021 season included a 9-3 mark in West Suburban Gold Conference action, which included two matches

against each of their six conference opponents. Downers Grove South won the conference title with a perfect 12-0 record in West Suburban Gold competition.

“We played a bad half against Glenbard East, and it cost us,” said Del Real. “But that doesn’t take away from the season. This was a special team, a special group of girls. The girls came a long way this season. As a coaching staff, we’re very proud of everything they accomplished.”

Moments after the conclusion of the June 2 match, several Rams and Warriors posed together for a group picture. The players in that group are teammates as members of the Firebirds Soccer Club.

Benet, which improved its overall record to 17-0 with Friday’s win over Glenbard East, held a 3-0 halftime lead over the Rams.

Benet is the No. 1 seed in the Morton Sectional. Glenbard East was the sectional’s No. 8 seed. Willowbrook was the No. 9 seed.

With its win over the Rams, Benet advanced to this week’s sectional-semifinal matchup against Oak Park/River Forest—the sectional’s No. 12 seed. The sectional’s other matchup features a battle between Lyons Township (the sectional’s No. 2 seed) and Downers Grove South (the No. 3 seed).

Benet won the Class 2A state title in 2019. The entire 2020 IHSA girls soccer season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Warriors finished the season with an 11-10 record.

Senior Caroline Dooley delivered a complete-game pitching performance for the Warriors. Dooley didn’t allow any earned runs. She gave up four hits and five walks over six innings. Dool-

ey recorded four strikeouts.

Wheaton North scored unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Willowbrook committed three errors in the game.

The Warriors managed only two hits in the June 2 post-season contest at Wheaton North. Dooley and junior Grace Hayes both singled for Willowbrook.

Wheaton North’s season ended with a 7-1 loss to St. Charles North in a regional final played on June 3.
