ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK The Illinois Legislative Audit Commission is now reviewing a warehouse lease agreement that critics call an egregious example of government waste and insider dealings.

And one of those critics, Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, is looking at introducing legislation that would require members of the Illinois Policy Procurement Board to recuse themselves from approving leases when they have possible conflicts of interest.

McSweeney and state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, signed a letter to Sen. Jason Barickman, R-Bloomington, and Rep. Robert Rita, D-Blue Island, who serve as co-chairs of the audit panel. The letter calls for an investigation of a $2.4 million lease negotiated with the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS).

The five-year lease allows the department to store documents at the former Barney’s Warehouse store in Springfield. McSweeney and Cullerton say the building could have been purchased outright for $750,000.

“This has been a problem for years,” McSweeney told Illinois News Network. “This is why we need to drain the swamp in Springfield.”

Staff from Elmhurst Hospital travels to Lebanon

Provides medical treatment, surgery, services to displaced refugees

When we see images of children injured in the war in Syria or displaced to refugee camps in neighboring countries, it’s too easy to feel a moment of sympathy and then, go on to the next news story.

It’s quite a different matter when you’ve met these families, worked with them and helped restore their

health.

Those were the feelings of three medical professionals from Elmhurst Memorial Hospital who recently visited Lebanon to bring medical supplies and assistance to the war-torn country.

The Independent had a chance to sit down with Dr. Michael Martirano, a general surgeon; his wife, Beth Martirano, who is an RN; and, Jennifer Lukas, also an RN.

The April mission to Lebanon was sponsored by the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), which pays for rental use of special medical equipment (such as a laser machine) and provides space for treating patients.

Volunteer doctors and nurses cover their own transportation and lodging.

Elmhurst Hospital has contributed $5,000 toward medication, surgery and catheterization lab expenses, a sum that’s being matched by its medical staff.

“We’re glad to help defray the mission’s medical care expenses,” said Pamela Dunley, president & CEO, El-

mhurst Hospital.

“And we’re offering paid time off for the Elmhurst nurses who are part of the group. We want to support the volunteer causes of our physicians and other staff.”

District 4 to host 5th annual event for Early Childhood Collaborative

Addison business and community members are invited to attend the Addison Early Childhood Collaborative’s 5th Annual Community Breakfast on Tuesday, June 20, 7:30-9:30 a.m., at the Addison Public Library, 4 Friendship Plaza. This year’s topic is “How the Investment in Building Character & Social Skills Impacts the Addison Business Community.”

The event will include a presentation and discussion about the impact a comprehensive approach to early childhood development and education can have on the Addison community, and employers, to increase economic productivity, decrease “presenteeism” and help build a strong workforce. Featured speakers are Josh Bickford--Executive Vice President, Strategic Initiatives of Clyde’s Donuts; Keri Karpman— Director of Special Education at Addison School District 4; and David Sabathne-CEO of Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce and Partner at Ready Nation.

Addison May 25 • Carlos Hernandez, 18, of Glendale Heights, was charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 500 block of N. Lincoln Ave. at around 11:58 p.m.

• Police said Kayla K. Russell, 18, of Addison, had a warrant out of the Kankakee Sheriff’s Department for armed robbery.

• A 20-year-old Bellwood man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 700 block of Addison Road at around 12:26 p.m. Police said the suspect struck the victim on the face and eye with his fist.

May 24 Domenico A. Aghakhani, 24, of Addison, was issued citations for leaving the scene of an accident, failure to give aid or information and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident near Jefferson and Fullerton at around 6:42 p.m.

May 23 A 58-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery and resisting arrest/assault in the 100 block of S. Mill Road at around 1:51 p.m. Police said the suspect pushed a victim and stabbed the victim in the abdomen with a power drill. The suspect reportedly refused to obey an officer’s commands and resisted arrest.

May 22 Laura Esparza, 18, of Streamwood, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near Addison and Byron at around 7:40 p.m.

Under my father’s fedora

‘Ever feel like you’ve been someplace before, Some other time, some other war…’

Following is a special Memorial Day column, on the occasion that we remember those who served, especially those who have fallen…

“Something about this place is familiar, but I’m not sure why.”

Those were the words of Rae LaVonne Powell Miller Hughes as she sat in a San Diego restaurant a few years ago with her two grown sons, Bob Miller and Ray Paul Hughes, their wives and the grandchildren.

Sharp as she was in her 80s, it took Rae a few moments to take that mental walk back through the history of her life. (Insert squiggly lines here to indicate the dream-like state leading us all back to… 1944.)

At that time, Rae and her new husband Lieutenant Charles Miller were expecting their first child when the young well-experienced pilot was ordered to ship out and fly missions in the Solomon Islands campaign during WWII. The couple bid farewell at the San Diego U. S. Naval Base, where she watched her handsome husband ride away on a ferryboat to the ship that would take him to the South Pacific.

While it must have been sad, she had to find some comfort in their connection that was the future Robert Charles Miller growing in her belly.

That was the last time she ever saw Lt. Charles Miller.

Several months later, a group of pilots, Lt. Miller among them, flew to Espirito Santo to exchange old planes for newer ones at New Hibrides Island. On their way back to the base, the group of six planes ran into stormy weather. The command leader had one pair fly up overhead and another drop below to look for clearer weather, a standard operating procedure, or SOP, used by Navy pilots during bad weather.

It’s unknown whether Lt. Miller’s plane went upwards or down on command, but the four planes that did were never seen again. The two planes that had stayed put survived.

Actually, the command leader said later he was able to see one of the planes — who knows which one — spiral down into the ocean where, from his point of view, “it looked like milk in a blender.”

She went on to live a wonderful full life, remarrying and having three more children. Still, Lt. Miller has never been forgotten, least of all by Robert Miller, the son he never knew.

This is Rae LaVonne Powell Miller Hughes holding one of her twin great-grandchildren, with the other held by their grandfather, Bob Miller, the son of Rae and her first husband Lt. Charles Miller. Bob never knew his father, who was lost while serving in the Solomon Islands.

Eric C. Rose, singer, songwriter, and arranger of Christian music, will give a free concert at Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday, June 4, at 6:00 p.m. The concert will be a blend of the performer’s own original songs and traditional sacred repertoire and testimony with some congregational participation.

Currently the director of music at Parkwood Baptist Church in Chicago, where he lives with his wife and three children, Mr. Rose is working towards a Bachelor of Arts in music at Saint Xavier University. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he has been drawing from his passion for Christian music in his ministry for more than fifteen years.

“I strive to use my music and testimony to point others to Christ,” Rose said, when asked about his life’s work.

Back to the 1940s, Rae was living in her hometown of Rockwell City, Iowa, (coincidentally MY hometown!), where she gave birth to Robert Charles Miller in September of 1945. Later, she married Ray E. Hughes — yes, they were Ray and Rae. They had three children of their own, twins Becky and Cathy and their youngest, aptly named Ray Paul. (Side note: Ray Paul named his own daughter Rae Ann.) Ray and Rae’s life-long best friends over the next 50+ years in Rockwell City were Howard and Pauline Longfellow — my parents — who were also married during WWII after meeting at a USO. “Even in an emergency, they may be treated but they are expected to pay money.”

“Syria was not an impoverished country,” Dr. Martirano said. “People worked, they were well-educated, they had good lives with homes, careers, art and culture. Then came ‘The Crisis,’ as they call it. Suddenly people were being murdered. Family members were lost in the war.

“While we didn’t see the actual shooting, we saw the aftermath, all the injuries.”

The group split their time between the cities of Bekaa, Tripoli and Beirut in Lebanon. Bekaa had refugee camps, where there were hospitals and support

Practicing their craft in different circumstances What was it like when they first got there?

“The first day we did a triage, some of us went to camps, others did the same thing in Beirut. The rest of the time, we were operating or monitoring patients. A lot of these patients showed up thinking they would have to wait until the next mission, but we were able to help a great many people.”

“I didn’t realize how much was going on,” said Beth Martirano. “We watched a documentary. It was interesting just hearing their stories.”

“I thought the camps might be a little better,” said Lukas. “I didn’t realize the depth of the horror. There was no running water, there was access to water but no plumbing. We could get water for a shower or sink, but there were no flush toilets.”

“There are so many things we take for granted here that are simply not that easy over there,” said Dr. Martirano. “Washing your hands before surgery is a standard thing, but it’s much more difficult without running water.”

“Some of the people who came to the camps simply needed showers, a luxury we didn’t have there,” added Lukas.

Different people, different cultures “It’s heart-breaking because it is very embarrassing to them,” Martirano said. “All the people who came in looked as nice as they possibly could under the circumstances. You could tell they tried to look their best.”

“I noticed people looked older than they were,” said Lukas. “I learned you can’t get hung up on one person’s sad story because, well, they’re all sad stories.

“You don’t want to feel sorry for them. They don’t want us to feel sorry for them.”

“After a few days of seeing how much the medical personnel cared and how hard they worked, the refugees were very appreciative and grateful, when at first, they were a little apprehensive,” said Dr. Martirano. “They wanted us to break bread with them,

they believe that eating together brings people closer. We brought in baklava and they were delighted.

“Once we had a meal with them, they were more trusting. Otherwise, they see people come and go all the time and it’s hard to trust people.”

The people of Lebanon love their country and want to go back to their homes, according to Dr. Martirano. He said more than anything, the people want to go back and live like they did before “The Crisis.”

“Some invited us to their homes for tea,” said Lukas. “They were proud people, very proud of their homes, even their tents. They made decorations and did their best, considering there were sometimes as many as ten people in a 10’X10’ room.”

Would they go back again? Absolutely!

If they had to do it over — and all three said they would in a heartbeat — they were asked what they might do differently.

“I’d absolutely go back, it was the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my nursing career,” said Lukas.

“I definitely got more than I gave,” said Beth.

“I’d try to bring more supplies,” said Lukas.

“They just need everything, supplies are so limited there. They need things like vitamins, Tylenol and Advil, inhalers, blood supplies. Someone donated thousands of toothbrushes.

“That’s the sad thing, they have toothbrushes, they will brush their teeth, but there are no dentists to provide care. The dentists that went over on the mission went above and beyond the call.”

Other things they needed, according to Lukas, were bandages, lotions, shampoos, soaps, sunscreen, hydrocortisone cream.

A final word Dr. Martirano offered the final comment about the experience.

“The one thing I learned was that the whole thing wasn’t about religion, race or politics, it was about helping people,” he said. “We went to help people, and that’s what we did. We had no agenda, no politics.

“We came back knowing we did the right thing, we did a good thing.”

“As expected, this past week has been an awakening of sorts.

I’ve been managing complex medical issues for refugees; I’ve also been managing my own feelings of guilt knowing that at the end of this week I return to my comfortable home.

Ironically, the patients I’ve treated are so much closer to their homeland than me, but they won’t be able to go home for a much, much longer stretch.

“Today in the camps I was asked to see a 6 month old baby boy with fevers. My colleague Elaine Spirakes examined his brother who was only a year older. Both of us were anxious about our evaluations, relying more on our experiences as mothers than doctors — we last saw pediatric patients many years ago in medical school.

“The babies’ parents smiled reassuringly at us, as it seemed they trusted our medical opinions more than we did. My ever-patient translator Kenan Alhayek also helped alleviate my stress given that his top notch translation skills made it seem that I was speaking directly to the baby’s parents without a language barrier.

“I held the baby’s tiny body, and my mind wandered off to my own experience as a mother of a sick 6 month old.

I remember sitting in Uzma Mohsin Muneer’s office, frantically explaining details of my daughters fever to her.

“I remember the urgency and fear of having a sick baby who couldn’t communicate with me.

I remember praying that her recovery would be quick so that she would feel better sooner.

“It is a true injustice that any parent should have to experience these anxieties with the additional stress of having limited running water, plumbing, electricity, and financial resources to get help.

“In that moment, my heart connected with these young parents who are trying their best to provide for their children when every possible obstacle has been put up to prevent them from doing so.

“Please don’t forget the Syrian refugees and other vulnerable populations around the world.”

Forest Preserve District seeks public input on clubhouse plans at Oak Meadows Visitors invited to review, provide feedback at open house events

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is hosting two open house events on June 7 and June 12 to seek public input on its proposed clubhouse designs for the newly-renovated The Preserve at Oak Meadows in Addison.

The first open house will be on Wednesday, June 7 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Addison Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza, Addison; the second one will be Monday, June 12 from 4 - 6 p.m. in the board room at District headquarters, 3S580 Naperville Rd., in Wheaton.

The open house events will start with presentations of two design concepts at 6:15 p.m.

June 7, and 4:15 p.m. June 12, after which District staff and consultants will answer questions and listen to comments from attendees.

Elmhurst-based Daniel Wohlfeil Design Ltd. designed multiple options for the clubhouse to potentially accommodate various events and programs. The open house materials will be available on the District’s website, dupageforest.org, and the DuPage golf website, dupagegolf.com, from June 8 ‒ 29.

“Oak Meadows has a great history and has been an important part of the community for a long time,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Marsha Murphy, District 1. “We want to make sure the new building can serve the needs of golfers and other visitors for many years to come.”

“The property has undergone an incredible transformation that improves wetlands and water storage and provides the public with an

amazing new golf course,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “We’re excited to add a quality structure that will complement the improvements to the landscape.”

History of the structure, plans for summer The original 50,000-square-foot Oak Meadows clubhouse, which was destroyed by fire in 2009, was designed to serve the private membership of the former Elmhurst Country Club.

Rather than replicate amenities from the private club era, the District’s design team hopes to take a fresh perspective that will better meet the needs of a public facility. The new clubhouse will likely have a pro shop, grill area and

locker rooms, but the District hopes to also include space for functions, District educational programs and other events.

The Preserve at Oak Meadows will reopen for golf this summer after undergoing a major environmental restoration project to improve stormwater management, provide greater water quality in Salt Creek, enhance habitat for fish and other aquatic species, and provide the public with a premier 18-hole public golf destination rivaling any in the Midwest.

Only 15 percent of the 288 acres is dedicated to fairways, greens and teeing areas. Future improvements will also include a connection to the regional Salt Creek Greenway Trail, making the area accessible to hikers, joggers and bicyclists.

Invention Convention for 5th graders at Lake Park Lake Park 5th graders demonstrated their creations on Friday, May 26 at the school’s Invention Convention. The students were required to think about a problem and then figure out a way to solve that problem.

The very imaginative projects included a shoe washer, dishwasher,

keyboard cleaner, covered cart, expandable lunchbox, and dozens of other creative inventions. Students used technology to create slide show displays that described their inventing process. They demonstrated their inventions to parents, administrators and other students who had the opportunity to see the displays.

The Fenton boys tennis team of Joe Andrews and Jeff Andrews had itself some success at the recent Class 1A state finals tournament.

The Andrews brothers went 3-2 at state after finishing third at the Class 1A Timothy Christian sectional a week earlier.

The pair opened the state tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 win against the Lakes team of Jacob Gotlib and Jackson Hubert.

They then scored a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-2 win over Johan Olsen and Ethan Greenfield of Metamora.

In the third round, they lost 6-1, 6-0 to the Dunlap team of Steven Chacko and David Wu. The Andrews battled back to score a 5-7, 6-2 (10-2) win over Sean Froidcouer and Brendan Grigg of Troy Triad.

They were eliminated after a 6-1, 6-1 loss to the Chatham Glenwood duo of Zack Tennenhouse and Ben Luebkemann.

Fenton baseball The Fenton baseball team lost 11-5 to Maple Park Kaneland in the semifinals of the Class 3A Burlington Central regional.

Fenton was the No. 7 seed in its sub-sectional of the Sycamore sectional, while Kaneland was the No. 3 seed.

Fenton softball The Fenton softball team saw its season come to a conclusion after a 6-2 loss to Richmond-Burton in the semifinals of the Class 3A Lake Villa Lakes regional.

Lake Park School holds talent show

Lake Park School was a busy place last week as the school held its annual talent show on Thursday, May 25.

Singing, dancing, poetry, bottle flipping, and magic were among the talents that were on display as 22

student acts entertained the students and family members in the audience. The Talent Roundup concluded with staff members delighting the crowd with a dance number featuring teachers as Minions and principal Dave Smogor as Gru.

Willowbrook baseball team wins regional title

Dembowski hit wins it for Warriors in seventh inning

The Willowbrook baseball team doubled its fun recently.

Mike Dembowski’s RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Warriors a 6-5 come-frombehind victory against Lake Park to win the Class 4A Hoffman Estates regional title.

Willowbrook is the No. 3 seed in the Lake Park sectional, while Lake Park is the No. 11 seed.

The win moved Willowbrook to 25-8 overall. The Warriors won their fourth regional title in school

history and first since 2012.

Willowbrook led 2-0 after the first inning, but trailed 3-2 after three innings. A two-run fourth inning gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead, but Lake Park tied it with a run in the fifth. Willowbrook went back ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, but Lake Park again tied the score at 5-5 with a run in the top of the seventh.

Willowbrook had nine hits in the game.

Ben Espinoza went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Jon Kelso had a walk and a run scored. Kyle

Ferguson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Alec Michaelson had a hit and two RBI. Trevor Jaloszynski had a hit and a run scored. Jack Hines went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Sam Pelsor had a hit and two RBI. Dembowski, Hines and Pelsor each hit a double. Ferguson had a home run.

Scott Kohrt was the winning pitcher. He pitched the seventh and struck out one. Ryan Mintz started and went four innings. He allowed two hits and three earned runs, while striking out two. Jack Nilles pitched two innings of relief and

gave up one hit and struck out two.

Willowbrook reached the regional final after a 6-0 win over Batavia in the regional semifinals.

Michaelson pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed only one hit, while striking out five to pick up the win.

Kohrt pitched the final third of an inning and got a strikeout.

Michaelson also helped himself out at the plate by hitting a home run. He also had a run scored, two RBI and a walk.

Espinoza and Kelso each scored a run and drew a walk. Ranieri went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Ferguson

scored a run and drew a walk. Dembowski had a hit, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Jaloszynski and Pelsor each contributed a hit and an RBI. Dembowski and Jaolszynski each doubled.

The Warriors were scheduled to play Conant Wednesday at Lake Park in one sectional semifinal game.

The other game features St. Charles North and South Elgin.

Conant is the No. 18 seed in the sectional, while St. Charles North is the No. 1 seed and South Elgin is the No. 4 seed.

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team dropped a 25-20, 25-18 decision to Lake Park in the semifinals of the Rockford East sectional.

Addison Trail finished the season with a 21-17 record.

Earlier, the Blazers were 25-15, 25-10 winners over St. Charles East in the championship match of the Streamwood regional.

Jacob Grygo had 17 assists and seven kills. Michael Pudlo had seven kills and four aces, while Colton Noel had six kills and two blocks.

David Zielinski had four kills, four assists, six digs and one ace.

Addison Trail reached the regional final thanks to a 25-14, 27-25 win over Schaumburg. Grygo had 13 assists, four kills, three blocks and three digs.

The Addison Trail baseball team saw its season come to a conclusion after a 7-1 loss to No. 5 seed Geneva in the semifinals of the Class 4A Addison Trail regional.

The Blazers advanced to the regional semifinals after an 11-1 victory over West Chicago in the quarterfinals at Addison Trail. Addison Trail was the No. 12 seed in the sectional field, while West Chicago was the No. 21 seed.

Addison Trail softball The Addison Trail softball team was a 10-9 winner over Elgin Larkin in a Class 4A Lake Park regional quarterfinal game. Addison Trail was the No. 16 seed in the sectional,

while Larkin was the No. 17 seed.

With the win, the Blazers advanced to the semifinals where they dropped a 12-0 decision in five innings to St. Charles East at Lake Park. St. Charles East was the No. 1 seed in the sectional.

Murillo returned to the lineup for the Blazers at the Willlowbrook tournament. “That gave us a big boost,” said Addison Trail coach Chad Grant earlier last week. “We now have really good size at the net.”

Grant also saw the team take a step forward at the service line. “Our serving toughness and accuracy has really improved throughout the season,” he said.

Noel was lauded for his late-season play. “Things have really clicked for Colton in the last few weeks,”

said Grant. “He is playing like one of the best offensive middles in the state.”

Grant also gave his thoughts on the team’s improved defense and its blocking. “We have played solid defense in some recent matches, but it has been inconsistent,” he said earlier last week. “We look really tough to beat when we are making plays on defense. Our blocking will be the key to our success in the postseason. We have struggled with this skill most of the season, but we should be a strong blocking team with our height.”

IC softball team wins sectional title Suicide squeeze bunt in seventh proves to be game-winner

Things don’t get much more dramatic than they did recently for the IC Catholic Prep softball team.

The Knights used a suicide-squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh to score the only run of the game in a 1-0 victory over Westmont to win the Class 2A Lisle sectional title.

IC Catholic Prep played in the Class 2A Rosemont supersectional on Monday at Rosemont Stadium against Beecher. If the Knights won they will play in the Class 2A state semifinals this weekend.

It was IC Catholic Prep’s second sectional title in the last three years under coach Frank Reaber.

In that seventh inning, freshman Brooklyn Campos laid down the squeeze bunt that scored a charging Kayla Faber-Cournane with what proved to be the game-winning run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Faber-Cournane got out of a first-and-third, two-out jam by inducing a Westmont batter into popping up to catcher Josie Lytton.

“It was pretty unbelievable,” said Reaber. “I didn’t think we hit as well as we should have. We may have

been a little tight offensively, but our defense was very good and Kayla pitched an awesome game. She hit her spots real well and got out of a couple of jams.

We had an error early in the game, but she was really good keeping her poise. She had bases loaded and a 3-1 count in one inning and got out of it.”

Reaber’s reasoning for the suicide bunt was simple.

“It’s the seventh inning and we had to get any run we could,” he said. “We wanted to get the run in. We had one out and runners on first and second and we fake bunted and stole both kids. And then we tried the squeeze. Brooklyn got tagged out but the throw was late and Kaitlyn sild in.”

IC Catholic Prep moved to 21-12 with the win. At one point in the season, the Knights were 4-6.

“We’re playing real well right now,” said Reaber.

“In this game, we might have been a little light on the offensive end, but we’ve been swinging the bats really well.”

Reaber pointed out the Knights start seven freshmen or sophomores. “We have a junior in Josie and one senior in Kaitlyn Falduto,” he said. “The rest are freshmen and sophomores. A lot of it could have been nerves, but they played very well. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Reaber said early in the year he was toggling with lineups to try and get the best possible combination for the Knights.

Terri Hemmert receives honorary doctorate from Elmhurst College Life-long Beatles fan reflects on college days, famous folks, her busy life today

It’s hard to imagine anyone living in Chicago who is not familiar with disc jockey Terri Hemmert of WXRT radio, if not from her radio show, then from her many other endeavors — her teaching at Columbia School of Broadcasting, her lectures for the Chicago Symphony, her involvement with BeatleFest, now in its 43rd year.

What is she most proud of?

“I beat cancer!” Hemmert proudly told The Independent in an exclusive interview.

Hemmert has had quite a few health problems over recent years, cancer being just one of them.

Having beat cancer has given her new energy and a new lease on life — although she admittedly still gets tired easily.

The Independent happened to talk to Hemmert on a day she was leaving after her on-air shift at WXRT to go to Wrigley Field for the Cubs game where she and a group of others were to be recognized before the opening pitch.

To be honored at Elmhurst College graduation Hemmert was in town on Saturday, May 27 for graduation ceremonies at her alma mater, Elmhurst College, which bestowed an Honorary Doctorate on the popular radio personality.

“I am shocked, I mean, I am stunned to be re-

ceiving an Honorary Doctorate. I wonder if they know I was on academic probation in my sophomore year?” she said with a laugh. “I don’t know if that makes me eligible for a doctorate!”

She also said she never thought her name would appear in the same sentence Terri Hemmert with Doc Severinson, who will receive a similar honor on Saturday. Severinson was the long-time band leader on the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.

Rubbing elbows with celebrities As a disc jockey for more than 40 years, Hemmert has had ample opportunities to meet a number of celebrities throughout her career. Asked her favorite, she’s quick to answer.

“Paul McCartney,” said the long-time Beatles fan. “He is just a well-grounded, nice guy, very real, very genuine and down to earth.”

She recalled a few years ago when McCartney was coming to perform at Wrigley Field and she was waiting in the wings along with several VIPs including then-Governor Pat Quinn.

“I held my hand out [to McCartney] and said, ‘hi, I’m Terri’ and right away, he said, ‘hey I

know you!’ He remembered me and gave me a big hug.”

That even impressed Governor Quinn.

“The governor said, ‘Wow, you even got a hug,’” she recalled. “I was just happy that [McCartney] remembered me!”

Other people she has met include Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono. “Yoko Ono is an amazing person,” Hemmert said. “I worked with her when we built the Peace exhibit and she’s so funny, very bright and a sweet person, not at all like her reputation for having split up the Beatles or anything like that.”

Regarding her career in radio, Hemmert said, “the Beatles were responsible for all this.”

“Just come out and check this school out, she said,” Hemmert recalled. “By the end of the weekend, I knew that’s where I wanted to be for sure. It just felt like home to me, like I really belonged. It was the perfect school for me.”

College has major impact on her life Hemmert said her education at Elmhurst College affected her “in a profound way.”

“The school prepares you not just for success in your career, it also shows you how to change the world, how to look out for somebody other than yourself,” she said. “My parents instilled in me to give back and so did Elmhurst College and that’s the most satisfying thing. You can have all the success in the world, but without giving back, it’s just so empty. So I’ve always been active in Where it all began…

Close team bond helps IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team reach state semifinals

As IC Catholic Prep girls soccer senior co-captain Kaitlyn Grady explains it, there was one word on the team’s mind at the beginning of the season.

“The word was breakthrough,” she said. “Like break through to the state finals. Everybody has been focused on the bigger picture this year.”

And the Knights did just that— they broke through and qualified for the Class 1A state semifinals for the first time in school history. The Knights finished fourth in the state.

“Everybody knew that over the whole season we had to focus hard,” said Grady. “If we didn’t, we wouldn’t make it to state. We had a lot of talent on the team and we were really motivated to win.”

Grady noticed the team zeroing in on critical factors in its game this season. “We definitely focused more on good passing instead of kick and chase,” she said. “We focused more on finding the open space and working our outside midfielders so they have open crosses. We had good team drive.”

Fellow senior captain Liz Maloney saw plenty of things in the beginning of the season that indicated a special season may be forthcoming.

“We’ve had great team energy

since the beginning of the season,” said Maloney last week. “We have talent and we combined that with positive energy and team unity. We learned to play as a team and not as individuals. We set this goal at the beginning of the season and now we’ve realized it. I always believed we could do it. It’s a great feeling.”

Maloney lauded the efforts of coach Tom Schergen (who recently was promoted to the school’s president position) this season. “He puts everybody in the right position so they could be used to the best of their ability,” she said. “Girls are able to use their talents the best way possible. He’s been unbelievable as a coach. He’s changed the team tremendously. He’s helped us improve as a team. You want to play well for him.”

Senior co-captain Tessa Langan said the trust factor for the team on the field also played a major role in the success it achieved.

“It’s nice to be able to trust people.

I trust that we have a strong defense behind us,” she said. “I know everybody is out there playing their hearts out. That makes it easier to score goals on offense.”

Grady points to the team’s trip to a tournament in Iowa earlier in the season as a key date in its progression.

“I love the bond the team has,” she said. “We’ve very close as a team.

The Iowa trip was fun because it helped us bond as a team. Everybody looks out for each other. The girls on the bench always are celebrating a good pass. Everybody supports each other. We are a family and that’s something I really like.”

Maloney added: “We make it so fun. It’s not a chore going to practice.

We use positive energy and positive vernacular and that’s why we enjoy each other. For instance, Grace Fuller always has something funny to say even when you are at your lowest points or when we are down on ourselves.”

Grady is one of five players who spent four years on the IC Catholic Prep varsity along with Langan, Tess Reardon, Maloney and Demitra DelFiaccio.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Grady. “It’s amazing to finish up at the state tournament your senior year. There is not a better way to finish out your high-school career.”

Langan adds: “It means a lot to us.

We set a goal at the beginning of the season to make it to state and now that we made it, the feeling is great.

For all the seniors who played the last four years, it’s hard to say goodbye. We all put in a lot of hard work.

It’s been a fun ride.”

The Knights, who beat conference power Glenbard South for the first time in Reaber’s tenure this year, did not allow a run in their first four playoff games. IC Catholic Prep downed Willows Academy 10-0 in the regional semifinals and beat Regina 7-0 for the regional title. IC Catholic Prep defeated Chicago Latin School 18-0 in the sectional semifinals.

“Nobody has scored a run on us in the playoffs so far. That’s unbelievable and we’ve done it with two pitchers (Faber-Cournane and Falduto),” said Reaber.

Local company helps Humane Society International save dogs slated for slaughter

It sounded a bit sensational, perhaps a little over-the-top when the Independent heard about a local effort to “rescue dogs from Korean restaurants.” It conjured up scenes from Lady & The Tramp, where dogs might be sharing a plate of spaghetti in the alley behind a restaurant until someone comes and snatches them away.

The real story isn’t quite that grandiose, but it’s a story nonetheless.

local company called Magnificent Mutts & Meows, owned by Linda Latelle. She was contacted by the Humane Society International to assist finding a place for 10 dogs saved from a meat market in South Korea.

“They were named ‘The Magnificent 10,’” said Becky Nemchock, who put the Independent in touch with Latelle for an interview. “As you can imagine, they needed lots of love, attention and patience. EACC was able to provide them with lots of care and a number of them have been adopted to loving homes.”

Latelle was able to tell her story.

“I’m partners with the Humane Society International (HSI), I’m considered an emergency placement partner,” she told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “I’m the only one in Illinois.”

She went on to say that one of the missions of HSI is to go over to South Korea and other countries like Thailand, where they do “barbaric torturing” to some of these animals before they are eaten.

“That was the mission of HSI, to help dog meat farmers and close them down.”

Before blaming the dog “farmers,” one must hear the whole story.

“South Korea used to be such a poor country that people had to eat anything that moved, just to survive,” Latelle said. “It’s not that way anymore but people who have farmed dogs over the years don’t know any other way of life. Most farmers want to change, but don’t know how, so the HSI helps the dog meat farmers by taking the dogs and helping them set up a different kind of farm. Most are receptive.”

She said after closing down a few farms recently, HSI found themselves with 10 dogs left and no place for them.

That’s when they contacted Magnificent Mutts & Meows for a rescue effort.

The Magnificent 10 came to the U.S. on Feb. 5 of this year, Latelle said, and three are still up for adoption. But then a few weeks ago, she explained, she was asked to take six more dogs.

“This person was getting complaints from his neighbors about the 24/7 barking and the stench that goes with it,” she said.

“The person who owned the dogs was a bit belligerent about them to HSI, saying, ‘Know what? If you want them, take them.’

“HSI said okay, but tell us more about your dogs, are they pets? At that point, the owner admitted that they were not pets, they were there for him and his buddies to hang them, watch them die and then slaughter it, cook it and eat it. They claim the more torture the dog sustains, the more tender the meat! Can you imagine?”

Latelle said dogs are often hanged or beaten, some are electrocuted, some are literally skinned alive.

“Part of my mission is to educate people that this really DOES go on and it doesn’t need to. With a col-

laborate effort, we could get [this treatment] made illegal and move forward.”

Some people have asked Latelle why she takes the dogs out of the country.

“I’ve been asked to help and part of my mission is educational not only in the U.S., but also all over the world,” she said. “If I can save a life, that’s my purpose. I want more people to be aware of what’s going on.”

Once the dogs are brought here from overseas, they are taken to a clinic like EACC where they are

given their shots and are spayed or neutered as needed. Some need medical attention, sometimes even surgery, but the dogs end up being nice pets for families with children, according to Latelle.

At this time, Latelle is still seeking loving homes for some of the dogs and hopes people will step forward to adopt one or two.

“Just to watch them come in, scared, timid, fearful,” she said, “then shortly after, you see them come out of their shell and become ‘real dogs’ which give — and get — the warm fuzzies.”

This is a dog that was saved from a farm in Kosovo. As you can see, he is curled up in a fetal position, almost inside himself. Linda Latelle of Magnificent Mutts says rescued dogs often come to her in this condition. “On Rescue Day she was found in a hell camp on the brink of death due to starvation,” Latelle said. “Her back left foot has a part missing from what the vet thinks is human cruelty.

After rescue and being treated with anti-inflammatories (and pain killers), she walks and runs without issue. When first rescued, she screamed when a human touched her.”

To adopt a dog, visit magnificentmutts.org, where the dogs are pictured with descriptions. There are applications at the site, which are reviewed by staff, then people are contacted to see that they are a good fit.

“People are also welcome to visit our Facebook page, we are always updating all the fun stuff there all the time.”

It is Latelle’s hope that the readers of the Independent will consider adopting a dog, or at the very least, share the story of these dogs and how they live prior to rescue.

Here is the same dog saved from Kosovo, that is on the mend, happy and healthy and ready for adoption by a loving family. Linda Latelle says that’s the best thing about her business — watching the dogs after they have been rescued to see how much they change. After being treated with love and patience, this dog is very loving to children and other dogs.
