DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced last week that bond has been set for a DuPage County Probation Officer accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with a female probationer. Christian Nunez, 32, of 1621 Westminster, Naperville, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge John Kinsella set bond at $100,000 with 10% to apply. Nunez has been charged with one count of Custodial Sexual Misconduct and one count of Official Misconduct, both Class 3 Felonies.

Nunez served as the victim’s probation officer since her release from the County Jail in May, 2017.

It is alleged that during her probation, Nunez began contacting the victim from his personal cellular telephone. It is further alleged that on several occasions, Nunez sent naked photographs of himself to the woman and requested that she send naked photos and videos of herself. It is alleged that on March 11, 2018, Nunez went to the woman’s home and instructed her to perform oral sex on him, which she did. Earlier this month, the woman alerted the Lombard Police Department to the aforementioned allegations resulting in today’s charges.

“The allegations that a government official, who obviously held a position of authority over his victim, would use that position to satisfy his sexual desires is revolting,” Berlin said. “This alleged breach of the public trust and what is expected of our government employees will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law. I would like to emphasize that the allegations against Mr. Nunez are in no way indicative of the outstanding work done

by Probation Department employees day in and day out. I would like to thank the Lombard Police Department for their excellent work which allowed us to prepare a strong case against Mr. Nunez.”

Nunez’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 11, in front of Judge Kinsella. Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

World War II caused dramatic changes to Illinois’ way of life and economy

Washington, Ill. resident Mary Kerr said World War II caused everyone to sacrifice.

“When we went into Iraq in 2001, there was no difference in my life because we went to war. But (back) then, everyone was affected; from Victory Gardens to rationing of items to the draft, everyone was in,” she said.

Mothers saved tin cans and foil.

Life went on, she said, but it was different.

“We went on with the churches and the schools, but it wasn’t the same. The Boy Scouts went on but they had paper drives,” Kerr said.

“Nothing was the same as it was before Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor.”

Thousands enlisted from Illinois When war was declared in December 1941, thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state either en route to or arriving at training stations.

Lakes had opened prior to World War I as a recruit training center, but by the early 1930s enrollment had slowed. World War II boosted the population at the station from 6,000 to 68,000, according to the Navy. In all, about 1 million sailors trained at the facility in North Chicago until the war ended in 1945.

Thousands of others, including many World War I veterans, flocked to the Illinois State Militia, also known as the Reserve Militia, where they agreed to serve for two years.

They stood watch over bridges, rail-

roads and other transit centers. When the war ended, hundreds were activated to serve as shuttle drivers in Chicago as the large number of GIs returning overwhelmed buses and trains, according the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

By the end of 1945, Illinois had registered 1,954,674 men between the ages of 18 and 38 at 361 separate local draft boards. Of these, 629,516 were called to serve. An additional 328,338 enlisted of their own accord bringing the total number of men from Illinois entering the services to

957,854.

The number of Illinois women joining the military during the war was 13,587. Counting those who already were in the military and those whose National Guard units were activated, Illinois supplied the U.S. armed forces with nearly 1 million of its citizens during the course of the war.

From Dec. 7, 1941, through Sept.

2, 1945, 17,521 Illinois servicemen and women were killed in combat or later died of wounds or injuries sustained in battle.

Caterpillar’s role In Peoria, production of earth-moving equipment made by Caterpillar Inc. had already picked up in pace due to the federal LendLease program, supplying goods and war material to Allied countries. Caterpillar tractors were already being used by the Allies in the early stages of World War II, according to Journal Star archives. But once the United States entered the war, production escalated. Bulldozers were vital to the war effort as they allowed creation of air fields and the cleanup of debris after battle.

Central Illinois factories geared up for greater production when the United States entered the war. The Defense Department initially asked for a variety of equipment from Caterpillar, including smaller items such as transmissions for tanks and undercarriages for howitzers. Then, according to a Caterpillar historian, the Defense Department decreed for production to switch exclusively to motor graders and track-type tractors on a large scale.

Tom Emery, a freelance writer from Carlinville, said the state’s economy was booming during the war. Factories were humming with wartime activity.

“The industrial cities were cranking out products that were war related,” Emery said.

Many blacks moved to Illinois during the war, particularly to Chicago for jobs. And female employment grew by 50 percent.

Rosie the Riveter One of those Rosie the Riveters was Ruth Lockart, who recently participated in the oral history project at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. The project was to reach out to World War II veterans and those who grew up during that time.

Lockart worked as a riveter at the Howard Aircraft Corp. in Chicago.

When America went to war, she was on the family farm in Paris but she wanted to get involved in the war effort and moved to Chicago where her sister lived. She trained as a riveter at the American Aircraft Institute and later went to the Howard Aircraft Corp. where she helped to construct a Navy training plane.

(Continued from page 3) them. The one I worked on was the Nightengale,” Lockart said. “We’d go to the factory at 8 a.m. and then we’d be off at 5 in the evening. We’d take a streetcar to the factory.”

Chicago, she said, was different then than now, saying it felt like a small town when she lived there.

“I have always been proud that I was a Rosie the Riveter,” Lockart said. After the war, she went to beauty school in Paris and married a soldier who fought in the European Theater.

POW camps Illinois was the home to several prisoner of war camps including one in Washington, a few miles outside of Peoria.

From 1944 to 1945, the village was the site of a small POW camp.

The camp started with 50 German prisoners who helped make K-rations for the troops. The camp expanded over the months to have more than 200 POWs, according to a book published by Mary Kerr about the Washington camp.

Kerr is working on another book about central Illinois during World War II, and including a chapter on a POW camp in the center of Eureka.

“Many people didn’t have contact with the prisoners and didn’t know if they were ‘good or bad,’” Kerr said.

“But if you had contact with them, you probably went away thinking that they were OK.” The kids were very intrigued by the POWs, she said, noting that many would ride their bikes to the camp and talk to prisoners.

Gavanes appointed to DuPage County Board

The DuPage County Board unanimously approved Chairman Dan Cronin’s appointment of Dino Gavanes of Itasca to serve on the Board, filling the vacant District 1 seat following the resignation of Paul Fichtner.

Chairman Dan Cronin said Gavanes brings a wide range of experience and skills to the position.

“Dino is very knowledgeable about many of the issues that face our County Board. With his experience in the private sector, along with his extensive resume of professional and community involvement, I have no doubt the residents of District One will be well-served by his representation,” Cronin said.

With more than 40 years of experience in the insurance industry, Gavanes is a principal with the Advisers Group Inc. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Engineering and received his M.B.A. from DePaul University.

Gavanes has held several leadership positions within the insurance industry including president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois, and National Director from Illinois to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA).

The Elmhurst College Summer Band soon will begin its second season of free outdoor concerts on the Elmhurst College Mall. The Summer Band is composed of students, faculty, local music teachers and community members, and performs a variety of music.

James Hile will conduct the band, and Professor Emeritus Judy Grimes will be the guest conductor. Professor Gayle Bisesi will be a featured guest artist singing with the band. The first concert, “Music on the Mall,” is scheduled for Wednesday, June 13; the second concert, “American Salute,” will be Wednesday, June 27.

Both concerts begin at 7 p.m. and will be held behind the Frick Center on the Brune Patio on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Community musicians are welcome to join the band. Rehearsals are every Monday and Wednesday beginning Monday, June 4, from 7-9 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel.

Funds are raised each year through participation in the Mayor’s Charity Ball in Addison and with proceeds from a fundraiser held each spring.

‘Rock ‘N Wheels’ kicks off Season with The Grass Roots Weekly concerts, food fests feature Bike and Car Cruise Night

Addison’s “Rock ‘N Wheels” summer concert and festival series kicks off the season on Thursday, June 7 with the popular 1970s rock group, The Grass Roots. Admission is free and the venue opens at 6 p.m. Joe Kalish performs at 6:30 p.m. followed by The Grass Roots at 7:30 p.m. on the 95.9 The River Stage.

Fireworks take place at 9 p.m.

Come out for Hot Wings Night as the Village of Addison opens its Bike and Car Show with a free concert in the park. May 19 Anthony M. Peterson, 22, of Bellwood, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, battery, resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer and criminal damage to state supported property in the 2200 block of W. Lake at around 10:56 p.m. Police said Peterson pushed a security guard, and struck a police officer on the shoulder and neck at a restaurant.

According to police, Peterson attempted to flee the scene, and while being transported, he kicked the window and door of a squad car damaging them, and the plastic seat.

Police said an officer responded to the Elgin Police Department at around 7:45 p.m. to transport and process Arlene Rodriguez, 54, of Elgin, who had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for forgery.

Addison May 24 A 31-year-old Palatine man was charged with domestic battery, unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence and criminal damage to a vehicle in the 200 block of E. Oak St. at around 10:57 p.m.

Police said the suspect punched the victim twice in the stomach, shoved her, and threatened to hurt her if she called the police. The suspect also damaged victim’s car windshield and stereo, according to police.

Police responded to a call of a burglary in progress. Upon their arrival, officers observed two vehicles fleeing the area.

In their attempt to flee, the driver of one of the vehicles, a Toyota, allegedly hit the second vehicle, a Dodge, also allegedly attempting to flee. The Toyota then allegedly crashed into a home.

Following the crashes, four men allegedly attempted to flee the two vehicles on foot. Daniel was apprehended a short time later in a nearby garage. A gun was also allegedly found in the garage in which Daniel was hiding. Webb and Wilson were found walking on a nearby street and taken into custody. Following an investigation led by the Elmhurst Police Department, it is alleged that on Nov. 27, the men burglarized three vehicles on Gladys and Evergreen Streets in Elmhurst. It is further alleged that the Dodge vehicle in the men’s possession was stolen the previous night out of Villa Park.

“Mr. Wilson admitted to his role in the incident on Nov. 27, 2017,” Berlin said. “This sentencing sends the message that if you commit this type of brazen crime in DuPage County you will be caught, charged and if found guilty, spend a significant amount of time behind bars. I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their fine police work apprehending the men accused in this case.”

Webb’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 4, 2018, and Daniel’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 26, 2018. The cases against both men are in front of Judge Kinsella.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

A day in the life of a developer…

Catching up with Charles Walsh Jr.

When the Independent published a story about the new Livia restaurant in Elmhurst, it was learned Charles Walsh Jr. was one of its silent partners. It seemed like a good reason to catch up with Walsh and see what development endeavors he has been involved with of late.

“I am a silent partner [at Livia],” Walsh told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “I have nothing to do with day-to-day operations, however, as a team player and as someone who wants to be involved with a successful operation, I wanted to contribute. I took it on to assist with the marketing, make sales calls to generate interest in catering and the private dining room. While I’m involved minimally, ‘help’ the key word – I worked to help us all be successful.”

He said one of his partners often uses the word “culture.”

“I think what he means is creating an experience that draws you to return more and more, again and again,” he said. “The experience draws you back on multiple occasions. You can see people coming in to see what’s going on. That’s where we want to be.”

From a real estate point of view, Walsh shared his feelings about the downtown Elmhurst and all the current development in that area.

“I like to see new things and that doesn’t mean that we should knock everything down,” he said. “It’s nice to see people fixing up their buildings and building new ones, it’s a great benefit for everybody. I wish I could be involved in all of those projects.

Lake Park Elementary holds Invention Convention

The 5th grade classes at Lake Park held their Invention Convention on Thursday, May 17. Students created an invention based on a problem that they observed. They then used STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) skills to create a resolution to their problem. The students created science fair style signs documenting the reason for the invention, a description of the invention, research conducted, and explanation of problems/solutions encountered during the process.

They also created advertisement posters and video commercials to showcase their inventions.

Parents, District 4 staff, guest

judges and Lake Park students visited the Invention Convention to see demonstrations. At the end of the event, students received certificates, such as “Best in Show” or “Excellence,” based their performance with the judges.

Willowbrook baseball team wins regional title Warriors’ softball team concludes season

The Willowbrook baseball team gave fans an entertaining show in the recent Class 4A Willowbrook regional title game in Villa Park.

The Warriors outlasted Wheaton North 8-5 in nine innings to win the regional title and advance to this week’s Class 4A Bartlett sectional.

Willowbrook plays neighbor Glenbard East today in the second semifinal at Bartlett at 4:30 p.m. If Willowbrook wins that game it will play for the sectional Saturday at Bartlett at 11 a.m. against either Lake Park or Marmion Academy.

Willowbrook (19-14) is the No. 6 seed in the Bartlett sectional. Glenbard East is the No. 7 seed. Lake

Park is the No. 8 seed and Marmion is the No. 13 seed. A win against Glenbard East today would give the Warriors their sixth 20-win season under coach Vic Wisner. Willowbrook won the regular-season meeting by a 5-2 count.

It was Willowbrook’s second regional title win in a row.

In the regional final against third-seeded Wheaton North, the home team lead 1-0 before Willowbrook scored two runs in the top of the third to go up 2-1. Wheaton North tied it with a run in the bottom of the third.

That stalemate held until Wheaton North scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, however, Willowbrook went ahead 5-3 thanks to a three-run outburst. Scott Tumilty reached on an error to lead off the inning. Mason Kamp did the same thing, giving Willowbrook runners on first and second with no outs. Kamp and courtesy runner John Taylor both advanced on a wild pitch

before Marshall McDonnell walked to load the bases.

Dan Gusel Jr. then doubled to left field, clearing the bases.

However, Wheaton North scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra sessions.

In the top of the ninth, Tumilty again led off and singled. Kamp then singled, scoring Tumilty. After a fielder’s choice groundout, McDonnell doubled, scoring Trevor Jaloszynski. Gusel Jr. then walked and Jack Hines hit a single that scored McDonnell.

Wheaton North did load the bases after two outs in the ninth via two walks and an error, but a ground out to the pitcher ended the contest.

Jaloszynski was the winning pitcher, he allowed one hit in relief of Jack Nilles, who went seven innings and allowed two earned runs, while striking out two.

The Warriors were limited to just one hit. Neuqua Valley led only 1-0 until it scored three runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

Amy Bussa had Willowbrook’s only hit and also stole a base. Caroline Dooley, who threw a no-hitter the previous week, took the loss.

Neuqua Valley was the No. 7 sectional seed. Willowbrook was the No. 10 seed.

The Warriors finished the season 17-12 overall.

IC Catholic Prep softball team takes sectional title Knights faced defending statechamp Beecher earlier this week

The IC Catholic Prep softball team added another layer to its model of consistent success in recent years.

The Knights were 12-1 winners over Lisle to win the Class 2A Lisle sectional title.

IC Catholic Prep (26-5) played defending Class 2A state-champion Beecher earlier this week in the Class 2A Seneca supersectional with the winner advancing to this weekend’s state finals in East Peoria.

The win gave the Knights their third sectional title in four years under coach Frank Reaber. Prior to Reaber taking over the program, the Knights had won only one sectional title.

“We’re still hitting the ball,” said Reaber. “It took a couple innings to get used to the girl they had pitching and then we scored three runs in the third, seven in the fourth and two in the fifth.”

The Knights pounded out 14 hits in the sectional final. Alessandra Eccardt, Natalie Murillo and Rebecca Cash each had a double, while Dani Murillo tripled. Cash was the win-

ning pitcher and moved her record to 13-1.

Kayla Faber-Cournane, coming back from injury, pitched the fifth and final inning.

“Dani Murillo is hitting the heck out of the ball,” said Reaber. “Natalie had a double against Lisle and Rebecca Cash pitched well and she also had a double. Kayla pitched the last inning. She’s slowly coming back from her injury.”

IC Catholic Prep reached the sectional title game after blanking Westmont 14-0 in five innings in the semifinals at Lisle.

The Knights led 3-0 after the first inning and 5-0 after two before exploding for nine runs in the third to put the game out of reach. The Knights had 14 hits.

Natalie Murillo and Cash each had doubles. Dani Murillo tripled, while Josie Lytton and Dani Murillo each hit a home run in the game.

Reaber said his team was looking forward to matching up with Beecher earlier this week. “Beecher is a really good team,” said Reaber. “If we play our game we can win. Whoever gets hot, that will be it.”

Reaber’s team has been plenty hot in its four postseason wins thus far.

IC Catholic Prep outscored its four postseason opponents by a combined 56-3. The Knights won their two regional games by identical scores of 15-1 and then had 14-0 and 12-1 wins in the sectional games.

In those four games, the Knights outhit their opponents 64-14.

Eric Ayala finished 28th in the 100 with a time of 12.80. Carlos McDonald was 26th in the 200 with a time of 29.31.

Javier Cabral was 14th in the 400 with a time of 54.04. Michael Lieggi took 10th in the 800 with a time of 2:02.61. Chris Zavala took 24th with a time of 2:12.96.
