Addison’s Serenity House receives funds from HOPE Taskforce More than $100,000 given to address opioid crisis

said DuPage County Board member Greg Hart, who serves as co-chair of the HOPE Taskforce. “Our new grant projects will expand DuPage’s efforts to reduce substance use disorder and save lives through innovative solutions that leverage public, private and non-profit partnerships.”

County Board doubles resources toward the effort The grant funding is made possible by the DuPage County Board, which has agreed to double the resources from $100,000 to $200,000 this year to support the work of the HOPE Taskforce. These funds allow the DuPage community to promote creative, effective programming delivered by organizations who work every day with individuals working toward recovery. The investment of the County’s funds is in addition to the millions of dollars that DuPage County organizations have received, which comes with specific, prescribed interventions that must be followed.

“We seek to ensure any individuals impacted by the disease of addiction, have full access to substance use prevention, education, treatment and recovery services equal to that of other diseases,” said Dr. Lanny Wilson, vice president of the DuPage

The DuPage County Heroin/ Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce announced last week the award of grants to organizations to expand their capabilities in the fight against the opioid crisis in the County.

Among the recipients was Serenity House Counseling Services, Inc. in Addison which received $32,425 for its Prevention Education Program and Grief Group. The grant will support substance use disorder prevention education to youth in middle schools, high schools, and universities.

Serenity House was the leading recipient of a Prevention Leadership Team which includes the National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI) for its Teen Ambassadors Project for Mental Health, Substance Use Prevention and Stigma Reduction. The $50,000 grant will support and engage teen volunteers to act as substance use prevention, mental wellness, and stigma reduction peer support ambassadors. Funds will also be used for a mass media stigma reduction campaign, support social norming campaigns, and education to raise community awareness about mental health and substance use prevention for youth.

District 88 holds Relay For Life Students raise more than $40,000 for the American Cancer Society

Willowbrook and Addison Trail recently showed giving back is a cornerstone of District 88 pride.

On March 14, the 11th annual Relay For Life of District 88 Youth event took place at Willowbrook, and more than 350 students and community members attended the relay. This year’s event raised $43,463 for the American Cancer Society. In total, this event has collected more than $700,000 during the last 11 years.

Participants enjoyed a variety of activities and games, and there also was a luminaria to honor more than

100 individuals who are fighting cancer or who have lost their battle with cancer. T The relay began by celebrating more than 12 survivors, as they walked the first lap around the track.

The top three teams with fundraising are: 1. Rais2e for a Cur3: $11,642 2. It’s Po22ible: $10,182 3. BLAZERS 2022: $6,182 Tad Tchop, a student in the District 88 Transition Program, continues to raise funds for the event. This year, he raised $3,553.80.

Village, Addison school districts host ‘Realtor Day’ Barbanente: ‘Success is a result of our partnerships’

Last week, the Village of Addison joined School Districts 88 and 4 to host about 90 local real estate agents to Addison Trail for a Realtor Day luncheon.

The purpose was to provide the realtors with materials and details about the community and school districts to ensure they have the most up-to-date and accurate information to share with their clients.

During the luncheon, participants enjoyed food prepared by the school’s culinary students, musical entertainment provided by the school’s orchestra musicians and a tour of the high school. There were

The Addison Historical Society, the Addison Center for the Arts and the Women’s Club of Addison will be hosting “Addison Uncorked,” a wine and craft beer tasting fundraiser on Tuesday, June 28 from 6-9 p.m. on the grounds of the Addison Historical Museum.

Underneath the stars in the museum’s courtyard, guests will be able to sample a wide variety of fine wines and craft beer selections while listening to the popular classics as performed by Chicago guitarist Hector Fernandez. Vintage wines and craft beers will be provided by August Hill Winery, Sal’s Beverage World, Church St. Brewing Company and Bailey’s Place. Light refreshments provided by Mario’s Deli will also be served.

Addison Trail seniors visit Elmhurst University On May 17, Addison Trail seniors who are enrolled in District 88’s new English 12 Collegiate Credit course visited Elmhurst University for their final field trip of the school year.

That class provides pupils with an opportunity to receive credit for Elmhurst University’s English 105.

The course is taught by District 88 teachers, in conjunction with Elmhurst University professors. Participants improve their vocabulary and writing skills and analyze literature in various forms, including novels, films, plays, essays, short stories and poetry.

The course focuses on improving writing for a variety of purposes and audiences, as well as encouraging students to develop their own writing style and voice. Students are recommended for this course by their junior-year English teacher and are approved by the English Department Head through an application process.

This year, 27 District 88 pupils took the class.

During their visit to Elmhurst University, the Addison Trail students enjoyed lunch and presented their final paper to Elmhurst University faculty. The paper focused on the definition of community and how community impacts people’s lives.

Sunday, May 15 marked the start of the 62nd Annual National Public Works Week across the country. At a recent Village Board Meeting, Mayor Rich Veenstra presented Public Works Director Rick Federighi with a Proclamation recognizing the work done by the Public Works department that enhance health, safety, comfort and quality of life. “Public Works is all around you … and all around our community! “Now voters may cast their ballot conveniently at a polling place near their job or school, instead of rushing to or from their home precinct,” said DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek. “Best of all, DuPage voters will no longer be turned away on Election Day for being in the wrong polling place in the county.”

The permanent Vote-By-Mail application allows voters to receive a mail-in ballot for every election.

Until now, voters preferring mail-in ballots had to apply one election at a time. The year 2022 is the first-time permanent Vote-By-Mail is available in Illinois, after the Illinois General Assembly passed it into law last year.

Mail voting was expanded in Illinois in 2020 in response to COVID-19 so that voters could safely vote at home.

“Permanent Vote-By-Mail increases voting choices. Nothing else is taken away,” Kaczmarek said.

“Voters may still vote in person on Election Day or during Early Voting.

Also, voters may continue to choose a one-time-only mail ballot.”

DuPage voters preferring to sign up for permanent Vote-By-Mail or a single one-time-only mail ballot are urged to do so on the County Clerk’s Elections web site at dupagecounty. gov/Election/VoteByMail.

The first day of Early Voting at the DuPage County fairgrounds was Thursday, May 19. Starting Monday, June 13, 22 Early Voting sites will open – four more than in 2020 and double the number from 2018. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 28 with 263 polling places.

Analysis: Poll shows ‘undecided’ leads GOP governor field, followed by Irvin, Bailey

We’re a little over a month from the June 28 primary, and “undecided” was the lead vote-getter in a recent poll of 1,000 likely GOP primary voters, with 36.9 percent of respondents falling into that camp.

For those polled who have picked a candidate, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin had the lead at 24.1 percent, followed by state Sen. Darren Bailey, R-Xenia, at 19.8 percent, Gary Rabine at 7.8 percent, Jesse Sullivan at 7.3 percent, Max Solomon at 2.3 percent and Paul Schimpf at 1.9 percent.

The poll, by WGN-TV, The Hill and Emerson College, was conducted May 6-8, had a 3 percent margin of error, and methods included cellphone messaging, landline voice response and an online panel.

Bailey’s camp was quick to say it shows the primary “is a two-person race for the heart and soul of our Republican Party.”

Bailey, a former state representative and now state senator, gained notoriety by challenging Gov. JB Pritzker’s executive order authority in court throughout the pandemic alongside GOP attorney general candidate Thomas DeVore.

He has a staunch conservative voting record in the General Assembly and he’s also been jockeying for the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Per the poll, 57.4 percent of respondents said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate endorsed by Trump, while 18.8 percent said less likely and the

rest said it would make no difference.

The Irvin campaign, meanwhile, said it’s Democrats who are propagating Bailey’s campaign.

The Democratic Governors Association, to which Pritzker has donated millions from his personal fortune over the past five years, has paid for ads attacking Irvin’s record as a defense attorney.

Recently, the DGA also launched a new ad calling Bailey “too conservative for Illinois” while listing things that might play well in a GOP primary, such as his 100 percent anti-abortion voting record, his National Rifle Association membership and his support for the Trump agenda.

The Irvin campaign pegged the total combined spend of his opponents and outside groups in the GOP primary at $22 million, including $8 million directly attacking Irvin.

Irvin’s campaign has spent at least $12 million, backed by $45 million from GOP megadonor Ken Griffin, founder of the investment firm Citadel, who was a financial backer of Republican former Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Bailey’s biggest backer is another megadonor, Uline founder Richard Uihlein, who at one time backed Rauner but ended up funding his GOP primary challenger in 2018.

He’s given Bailey $3.5 million.

Thus, the DGA ad buys greatly expand Bailey’s statewide exposure.

State Rep. Willis highlights passage of cleft lip insurance bill State Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Addison, is celebrating the signing of her sponsored bill, HB 4349, into law by Governor JB Pritzker on Friday, May 13.

The new law requires private accident and health insurance policies, as well as state employee plans, to cover medically necessary care and treatment of cleft lip and palate for children under the age of 19.

“Cleft lip and palate is a common medical condition which affects hundreds of babies in the United States each year, dozens of whom will, on average, be born in Illinois,” said Rep. Willis. “This is a condition that is easily treatable with a simple surgery, but many insurance plans refused to cover it. This law corrects that.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a good

source for information on cleft lip and palate. Around 1 in 1,600 babies are born with some form of the condition, which is often disfiguring without treatment and can impact the ability to eat and to speak but is easily correctable with surgery.

“Children should not suffer from a common debilitating and disfiguring condition which is easily treatable,” said Willis. “Now every soon-to-be parent in Illinois can have the peace of mind of knowing that if their baby is one of those affected by cleft lip, treatment will be covered by their insurance.”

Of smoothies and kayaks I wanted a kayak. It was a simple request I repeated repeatedly. I talked about how we would go kayaking this summer on the lake. We’d have a blast making family memories while building our triceps and getting a tan. I communicated as clearly as I could, in English, which is the language they speak. I wanted a kayak.

They got me a blender.

There was a reason for their actions. They like smoothies. And, despite the allure of a sleek kayak cutting through the cool, clear water, it was a distant vision. In my climate zone, you can’t kayak in the winter. You have to wait until summer.

Smoothies are available all times of the year—for those with the machinery to make them. Months of waiting for warm weather or immediate gratification: the choice was obvious.

To their credit, they didn’t get me any ordinary blender. They purchased one with a motor capable of powering a rocket to the moon. This thing doesn’t blend food. It pulverizes cells; turns them inside out and supercharges the nutritional value like no blender ever dreamt of doing.

Darren Bailey as his opponent this November, and Darren Bailey is happily accepting Pritzker’s assistance,” Irvin spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis said in a statement. “Darren Bailey’s candidacy is so weak he needs JB Pritzker to do his dirty work.”

That statement came in an announcement from the Irvin camp that it was launching a new attack ad against Bailey, pegging him as “Pritzker’s favorite tax-raising Republican.”

The “tax-raising” attack is aimed at Bailey’s time on the board of the North Clay School District from 1996 to 2012, when he frequently voted to raise tax levies, resulting in an 81 percent property tax increase in the district during his time on the school board.

Bailey has said he appreciates the DGA ads because they show both sides of the political establishment are underestimating him. And he’s contended that Irvin is the Democratic plant.

“Democrats shouldn’t be involved and spending money in our primary,” his campaign said in a statement. “Richard Irvin is a career Democrat and puppet of the political elites, and he is meddling in our Republican primary, trying to fool voters with nothing but lies from his basement.

“Darren Bailey is the true conservative in this race who fought Pritzker over his lockdowns and mandates while Irvin was hugging and praising him.”

The poll was released two days after Irvin was in Aurora for his first news conference since March. While he called it to publicize a state audit that showed the Illinois Department of Public Health failed to respond quickly to a deadly COVID-19 outbreak at a state-run vet-

erans home in the fall of 2020, reporters largely used the time to drill down on a number of issues Irvin has been avoiding.

He mostly dodged questions, telling reporters “let me finish” or “can I finish” more than 20 times as he restated campaign talking points and attacks rather than answering. A Chicago Tribune headline blared: “GOP candidate for governor Richard Irvin holds a news conference, but dances around questions on abortion, Trump.”

Among the questions he dodged were those that sought to clarify his votes in the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries and whether he would support Trump in a 2024 election.

“That’s exactly what JB Pritzker wants to be talking about,” Irvin said.

Except Irvin’s camp has accused Bailey and Sullivan of being “never-Trumpers” and attacked Bailey for his own vote in a 2008 Democratic primary.

We’ll see if the Irvin camp views this week’s news conference as an indicator that more practice with the media is needed, or if he reverts further into a campaign insulated by the Griffin money.

Pritzker, meanwhile, was pressed on the DGA ads at a recent news conference, stating he’s not afraid of any Republican candidates, and any attacks against them should be seen elevating “all of the good that Democrats have done in the state and that I as governor have done in the state.”

“Darren Bailey has been attacking my policies since day one,” Pritzker said.

“Certainly if he becomes the Republican nominee, he’s gonna be a tough competitor. I’m simply trying to tell everybody who Darren Bailey really is.”

Village participates in ‘Aging in University’s lineup to feature Benoit Grammy-nominated jazz pianist to headline a Changing Region’ program 27th annual outdoor concert

The Village of Bensenville recently participated in an Aging in a Changing Region program facilitated by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, and Planning/Aging funded by a grant from the RRF Foundation for Aging. Bensenville was one of five communities selected to participate in the program which analyzed Bensenville’s older adult services and programs within the community.

The program consisted of two workshops led by Brad Winick, a consultant with the firm Planning/Aging. The first meeting took place on Oct. 27 with community stakeholders and the second on Nov. 3 with Bensenville senior residents. These public workshops served as a way for community stakeholders to share information about programming and for residents to provide feedback. A survey was also available on the Village website for those who wished to provide input and were unable to attend the meeting.

Following their analysis, Planning/Aging Consultant Brad Winick and his team compiled key recommendations and presented them at a Village Board Meeting on Tuesday, April 26.

Recommendations included: • Clearly promote the Village’s support for aging-in-community • Establish an ongoing Aging-in-Community Commission • Designate aging-in-community point persons in key departments • Link aging-in-community with other efforts, including diversity • Review ordinances, plans, and programs for aging-incommunity ‘fit’ • Study your older adult housing market and consider revisiting Accessory Dwelling Units for their aging-in-community benefit “The Village and our entire community continues to do a great job at providing services and programming for our older residents.

This program served as a substantial way to learn about the changing needs of our aging community and confirm the Village’s commitment to our aging residents,” said Village President Frank DeSimone.

The Village wishes to thank all parties involved, especially the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Brad Winick, and the Bensenville residents who attended the meetings who provided valuable feedback.
