Blazer Color Run fundraiser coming to Addison Trail

On Saturday, May 4, Addison Trail will host its 3rd annual Blazer Color Run and the community is invited to join the fun.

The run/walk consists of a 5K course that will start and end at Addison Trail’s stadium. During the race, runners will be doused with colored powder at various stations.

The event will begin at 9 a.m.

(check-in will start at 8 a.m.) at the high school, 213 N. Lombard Road.

The registration deadline to guarantee a T-shirt has past, but registration will be open until the event begins. Participants who sign up after April 18 can wear their own white T-shirt.

The fee is $25 per person, which includes a T-shirt (while supplies

last), an individual color packet, water and snacks.

A conversation with U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Congressman shares the atmosphere in Washington; talks about education, western access to O’Hare

A few months ago, the Independent began reaching out to our national leaders to get perspective on what is going on in Washington, D.C. and how it affects the western suburbs of Chicago.

At that time, the country was concerned with the situation at the border where parents and children were being separated from each other, while President Trump was under scrutiny about the possibility of Russian collusion and the Mueller report.

There has been apprehension about what could happen to our country as we go for-ward.

The interview could be summarized in one question—what’s next?

“I think that right now the next step is, we have to bring Bob Mueller and other key witnesses to Capitol Hill,” he said. “We need to see the full non-redacted report, which has been hidden from public view and from Congress as well.”

Congressman Raja was asked if it’s time impeach President Trump.

“As far as impeachment, we shouldn’t jump to that next step until we’re ready,” Raja said.

“When I was as a specialist in the Attorney General’s office, one thing I learned was you must always investigate before you prose-cute. We should not jump to a hasty conclusion right now.

Yes, there are clues that he may have obstructed justice, but we need to continue our due diligence, continue the investigation before we start any formal proceedings.”

“I have been working with Congressman Thompson, a Republican from Pennsylvania, to boost good efforts in education and see to it that 13 million students will get a skills-based education.”

Asked if that meant high school or college students, he said it was anyone who was taking part in technology education across the board.

Molly Drogosz has been named as Addison Trail’s April recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her outstanding academic accomplishments. Drogosz, a senior, was recognized during the April 15 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

Drogosz has taken nine Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and 12 Honors courses, earning top marks in all of them.

“I have only met Drogosz this school year in Accounting 1,” said Juliann Boudouris, Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department Head.

“She accepted the Honors option for the course and has exceeded all expectations in accounting.

Drogosz is an excellent representative of the student body and has found a way to be involved in all aspects. She not only has taken accounting this year, but also is a member of the band at Addison Trail. She has one of the top scores in accounting and is one of just two female students who will be attending the College of DuPage Bottom Line Accounting competition at the end of the month.

She is a super-conscientious student – quiet, but thoughtful of others. This recognition is well deserved. Congrats to Drogosz.”

Drogosz said she has learned to step out of her comfort zone when it comes to her coursework.

She took AP U.S. Government & Politics first semester, and part of that course encourages students to work on a campaign for a local legislator.

Through her experience working for State Rep. Deb Conroy, Drogosz has learned to be more outspoken and how to speak with people who might have opinions that differ from her own. Social studies teacher LeVonne Cescolini-Boyer, who teaches AP U.S. Government & Politics, said Drogosz really got into the campaign, and she noticed how hard Drogosz worked both on that project and

Many other areas also have influenced Drogosz to be the person she is today. She has been highly involved in music during her four years at Addison Trail. She said Music Department Head and Band

Director Mark Corey teaches students life lessons and is always available to offer support. Her favorite high school experiences and memories involve music, and she has had many opportunities to travel and meet new people through the program. Drogosz plays the flute and piccolo and loves preparing for shows and concerts, being with her close group of friends and being a leader.

“I have had the pleasure of teaching Drogosz for four years in band,” Corey said. “It has been amazing to watch her grow from a shy, unsure freshman to the confident and accomplished person she is today. Drogosz did not attend Indian Trail Junior High School and had a significantly different musical background than her peers, who enjoyed receiving music instruction daily. Drogosz recognized that immediately and was determined to meet or exceed her peers’ musical skills. She sought private instruction, practiced diligently and is now one of the most accomplished musicians in the department. It is her determination and resolve to continue to better herself that set her apart. Her motivation is not grades or accolades, but the knowledge that she has given her all and done her best.”

Drogosz also has participated in Book Club, is a member of the National Honor Society, serves as Treasurer for the Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society, played in the pit for this year’s spring musical “Newsies” and is a four-year member of the Math Team. She has done a lot of service work through NHS and enjoys reaching out to her community to help.

After graduation, she plans to spend her summer getting ready to attend either Lewis University or DePaul University, where she wants to explore accounting or criminology.

Marijuana bill likely to come up early when lawmakers return Key supporter says exact language still being negotiated

A key supporter of an initiative to legalize adult recreational marijuana in Illinois said substantial bill language will be filed soon, and the issue could be one of the first discussed by state lawmakers when they return to the Statehouse from their two-week spring break this week.

In a recent interview for the Capitol Cast podcast by Capitol News Illinois, state Sen. Heather Steans, a Chicago Democrat, said she hoped to file substantial adult use language “by the end of April or very early May, if not (Tuesday) April 30.”

Illinois legalized marijuana use for certain medical conditions under a pilot program enacted in 2013. Three years later, lawmakers decriminalized possession of less than 10 grams

of marijuana—about one-third of an ounce—lowering the offense from a misdemeanor to a civil offense that carries a $100 to $200 fine.

Now, with support from Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, many lawmakers want to legalize it for adults entirely under state law, even though it remains a criminal offense under federal law. Pritzker’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year includes $170 million in new revenue from licensing cultivators and dispensaries.

Steans said a number of different “working groups” have been meeting to hammer out details of different aspects of the legislation. Those are thought to include such things as how many new licenses will become available for cultivation and retail sales; how much those licenses will cost, and how they will be allocated; and limits on how much marijuana an individual could possess for personal use.

Some early proposals have called for setting aside half or more of the new licenses for people who live in predominantly black, Hispanic and Native American neighborhoods,

which supporters argue have suffered disproportionate negative impacts from the war on drugs.

Steans said the proposal likely to be unveiled this week also will include a provision allowing individuals to cultivate a certain number of plants in their own homes for personal use.

“Yes, we’re still talking about five plants,” she said. “There may have been drafts out there with more than that. We’re talking about a five-plant-per-household maximum

The idea of complete legalization of adult recreational marijuana faces significant opposition from a number of religious organizations as well as some of Steans’ fellow legislators.

“If you legalize it, usage is going to go up. That’s been the experience of all the other states that have done this,” Sen. Dale Righter, a Mattoon Republican, said in an interview. “When usage goes up, abuse will go up, and there will be more people landing on the doorsteps of

drug treatment providers across this state—drug treatment providers who will tell you we have more people than we can serve and we do not have enough money.”

Steans, meanwhile, said she was cautiously optimistic a legalization bill can pass.

“I never like to presume how folks are going to vote,” she said.

“But yes, we’ve been working with lots of the members from various caucuses, hoping to get something we think is reasonable.”

Public health department has action plan to combat measles CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

The Illinois Department of Public Health recently announced a slate of initiatives to increase vaccination rates statewide.

There have been seven cases of measles in the Land of Lincoln so far this year, and more than 600 in 22 states around the country.

“We are taking the threat posed by a rise in measles cases very seriously and are committed to taking action to keep

Illinoisans safe,” Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in a news release.

The initiatives include a marketing campaign to combat “extensive misinformation” about vaccines, and bringing temporary mobile clinics to under-vaccinated neighborhoods and highly attended community events, such as fairs, celebrations and religious gatherings.

Hughes’ organization is starting a similar campaign to increase vaccination rates and education.

Lawmaker urges Senate passage of corporate board diversity bill

State Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch urged the Illinois Senate last week to act quickly on his bill that would require all publicly traded corporations headquartered in Illinois to have at least one African-American and one woman on their boards of directors.

Speaking at a news conference in Chicago live-streamed online, Welch stood with several high-profile black and female business leaders and said, “We support House Bill 3394 because it’s our time and it’s our turn.”

“Open the door. Let us in. Give us our seat at the table,” he said.

The bill passed out of the House on March 29 with 61 votes, only one vote more than the minimum 60 votes needed for passage.

That vote came after a rancorous debate on the House floor during which some Republicans accused supporters of the bill of being extremists.

“This is blowing my mind,” Rep. Tony McCombie, a Savanna Republican, said during the debate. “You guys are going to put your governor, our governor, on the books for being the biggest business-busting person in the nation.”

“This is a horrible bill,” she continued. “I don’t even—you guys have got to get it together here. I don’t— no offense, this is something else.”

I don’t care whether you are offended or not by the fact that we are against this bill. The fact remains that you’re not going to get anything in this country in the way of being treated equally if you’re going to take offense at every damn thing that comes up.”

When lawmakers returned to the Statehouse, Reick publicly apologized for that comment.

Only one Republican, Rep. Margo McDermed, of Mokena, voted in favor of the bill, while 27 Republicans voted against it. Four Democrats and three Republicans were recorded as not voting and several other House members were listed as absent.

During the news conference, Welch and others disputed the argument that a requirement for racial and gender diversity on corporate boards would be bad for business.

“Investing in companies that support gender and racial equity isn’t just the right thing to do, but it makes the most financial sense,” Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers said, citing an analysis by the business consulting firm McKinsey and Company. “Companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 35 percent more likely to have financial returns above their respective industry and sector medians.”

The bill is pending in the Senate, where Sen. Christopher Belt, a Cahokia Democrat, is its chief sponsor.

As nurses of Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health, we have deep and serious concerns about a legislative proposal, House Bill 2604, that would impose mandatory nurse staffing ratios at Illinois hospitals.

Throughout our careers as direct care hospital nurses, we have been honored to care for people during the most vulnerable times of their lives. We provide high-quality, compassionate care based on the specific conditions and individual needs of each and every patient.

However, this proposal would create a numerical, “one-size-fits-all” mandate for nurse staffing, overriding the expertise and judgment of nurses and other medical professionals at our hospitals. This rigid, by-the-numbers approach would severely limit our flexibility and decision-making to meet the unique and ever-changing healthcare needs of our patients.

We believe in flexible staffing that starts with assessing each patient’s condition and care needs, and allows our hospitals, with the input of direct care nurses, to match our nursing staff to the individual needs of our patients. This approach enables our hospitals to provide the right and appropriate staffing and care that patients need instead of being handcuffed by ratios that force us to add extra nurses in units where they are not needed.

That approach has been recognized as successful. Edward Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital have been designated as Magnet hospitals for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In addition, Edward, Elmhurst and Linden Oaks are regularly honored for safety, quality and patient care by national healthcare organizations.

Mandatory staffing ratios wrongly assume that patients in observation units need the same level of nursing care as patients in psychiatric units or hospital units with complex medical and surgical patients. Staffing ratios would require unnecessarily high staffing levels during the middle of the night when patients are sleeping and force highly trained nurses to perform tasks normally handled by support staff. It’s an ineffective and costly way to handle healthcare staffing decisions and it could impede our hospitals’ ability to provide the best possible patient care.

There is no conclusive evidence that nurse staffing ratios improve

quality or patient outcomes, but they will drive up healthcare costs in Illinois by at least $2 billion a year, including more than $15 million a year for our hospitals.

If nurse staffing ratios are mandated for hospitals, we will be forced to reduce or close healthcare services and units. There will be times when hospitals will have to go on bypass (sending patients to other hospitals) during unpredictable periods of elevated need when there are not enough nurses in the emergency department to treat patients to comply with the ratio mandates.

We urge our state legislators to oppose House Bill 2604 – or any other legislative proposal – that would impose unworkable and costly nurse staffing ratios that won’t improve care for our patients.

St. Philip the Apostle School holds Literacy Night in ‘Seussville’ Area families enjoyed a fun night in “Seussville” when St. Philip the Apostle School hosted its first Family Literacy Night recently. More than 103 children and parents attended the event, which encouraged students to explore reading through a variety of games, crafts and other hands-on activities.

Preschoolers through fifth graders visited nine different activity stations featuring Dr. Seuss books, including: One Fish, Two Fish Sight Word Pond; Horton Hears a Who BINGO; Yertle the Turtle Syllable Stacking; My Many Colored Days Metaphor Sand Writing; Fox in Socks Puppets; Green Eggs and Ham Tasting; Hop on Pop Hopscotch; McElligot’s Pool Duck Pond; and Cat in the Hat Masks. Even the snacks had a literacy theme, such as the “Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) Popcorn Station.”

There was also a parent information station where adults could pick up brochures and flyers about promoting literacy at home.

The evening was spearheaded by Casey Depaepe, the school’s assistant principal and academic interventionist.

“I love to instill a love of literature and learning in my students,” she said. “We offered stations that engaged visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. It also gave parents to see how they can best help their child

learn.”

DePaepe worked with the school’s junior high Enrichment Group, which planned and implemented the event.

“It was a wonderful way to have our sixth, seventh and eighth graders involved in Project Based Learning for preschool and elementary students,” she said. “The group organized it all. They developed the games, designed and sold t-shirts to raise funds for the event, created marketing materials and publicized it, decorated the school and manned the stations during the Literacy Night.”

The Enrichment Group includes sixth grader Joe R., seventh graders Alex A., Jack D., Lorelai F., Frankie G., and Caroline T., and eighth graders Sofia A., Miabella D., Annie O., Philip S. and Amari T. In addition, 25 junior high students helped in the stations throughout the evening.

“The event was so popular with community, school and parish families that we hope to make it an annual activity,” said Principal Julie Noonan.

College news Cullerton pushes awareness of ‘Scott’s Law’ in deadly season for State Troopers In light of the last couple of deadly months on the highway for the Illinois State Troopers, Senator Tom Cullerton is pushing for greater awareness of existing laws that require Illinois drivers to slow down and give officers a wide berth.

Cullerton (D-Villa Park) championed Senate Bill 947, which would require the Secretary of State to include information about Scott’s Law in every vehicle registration notice it sends to motorists. Scott’s Law requires that drivers must move over, if possible, and slow down when approaching an emergency vehicle.

“Every day, State Troopers put their lives on the line to keep us safe,” said Cullerton. “In turn, we must do whatever we can to put a stop to these preventable, senseless accidents. It is plain and simple – when you see an

The legislation was introduced in light of the recent tragic deaths of three State Troopers since the start of 2019. The number of troopers hit by vehicles has drastically increased this year. In the last three months, there have been 16 reported incidents.

“This measure will ensure that Illinois’ drivers are utilizing responsible driving practices,” Cullerton said. “It’s vital that we stay alert while driving. One wrong move can cost lives.”

Senate Bill 947 passed the Senate with unanimous support and is now in the House for consideration.

Addison Trail baseball team keeping busy Blazers played five recent conference games in one week

The Addison Trail baseball team had a rough stretch of recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division games.

The Blazers played five conference games last week and lost all five, three to Hinsdale South and two to District 88 foe Willowbrook.

“Those were tough games,” said

Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy. “We had the opportunity to win some of those games. The other team got the big play and we didn’t.

That’s what it came down to. Willowbrook hasn’t lost in the conference yet and we had them on the ropes in the second game late. They had a bases-clearing double on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. They cleared the bases and it gave them the lead.

But it was a really well-played game. It came down to one play.”’

Kennedy said the first game of the Hinsdale South series had a similar refrain. “The Monday game was

rain-shortened,” he noted. “We lost 2-1 and got their pitcher to max his pitches. If that game would have gotten into their bullpen we definitely felt we could have scored in those sixth and seventh innings had the game not been called for lightning.”

Despite the tough outcomes, Kennedy was pleased with his team’s approach. “The kids are in good spirits and they played hard during a long week,” he said.

The Blazers also had a game called due to weather against Proviso West in which they were win-

ning 6-1 at the time the contest was halted.

Individually, Kennedy has been pleased with the play of Michael Scali and pitcher Nick Zucchero.

“Michael Scali is on fire,” he said.

“He’s hitting .490 and has stolen 12 bases. He’s also been awesome defensively. He’s made some unbelievable defensive plays as well.

He’s been outstanding for us.

“Nick has thrown the ball well for us,” said Kennedy. “He’s a guy who has stepped up for the team. We’re still down three starters and he’s really helped us on the mound.”

In other earlier action, the Blazers were WSC crossover winners against Downers Grove North. The Blazers were 6-12 overall and 2-10 in WSC Gold action through late last week.

“I’m happy with the effort and the fact we are getting better every week,” said Kennedy. “We are right there with the better teams in the conference. It’s one play or a ball bouncing a different way and we’re talking about different outcomes.

This is a young team and it’s great to see these kids get into the flow of the game.”

Willowbook badminton team continues to prosper Addison Trail boys volleyball team wins two conference contests

The Willowbrook girls badminton team had some recent strong showings at the Hinsdale South ABCD invitational.

Charlotte Dewyer took first in the C bracket, while Hanna Konrath finished in the top four in the A bracket. Coach Eastman Tiu also noted the No. 1 dou-

bles team of Kaitlyn Fox and Nicole Kapica played well at Hinsdale South.

Willowbrook was 14-4-2 overall and 5-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play through late last week. The Warriors also dropped a recent 10-5 WSC crossover dual to York.

And through late last week, Charlotte Dewyer was 30-3 overall at No. 2 singles, while Kapica and Fox were a strong 20-10 at No. 1 doubles.

“The girls have been pulling together and supporting each other as teammates really well,” said Tiu. “They set several goals at the beginning of the season and have been consistently

working toward those goals.”

Tiu has been pleased with how his team has worked through errors. “We have been playing pretty consistently by not making the same mistakes over and over again,” he said. “We need to keep working on playing smarter and making in-game adjustments on our own. And you always can work on fundamentals in racquet skills, footwork and conditioning.”

Others playing well include the likes of Chloe Herr and Lizzie Romero. “As juniors, they have been playing a lot in a lineup full of seniors and have gotten several wins for us this season,” Tiu pointed out.

Willowbrook played in the Hinsdale South sectional earlier this week where berths in next week’s state finals tournament were on the line.

“The season has been largely successful as we approach the end of the season,” said Tiu. “I would say most of the players have met their goals thus far. The next two weeks will be very telling.”

Giany Patano had three kills, while Nico Nasti had 24 assists and one ace. Michal Zdanowicz had eight digs. The win put Addison Trail at 7-13 overall and 3-1 in WSC Gold play.

Patano had eight kills in the Blazers’ 25-13, 25-11 WSC Gold triumph. Cacucciolo had four kills and three aces, while Mosny had four kills. Enzo Ciaccia had three kills and two aces.

Daniels had three kills, while Nasti had 23 assists and one ace.

The wins keep on piling up for the Willowbrook baseball team.

The Warriors won all five of their games last week to run their record to 17-3-1 overall and a perfect 12-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action. The Warriors have two conference series remaining with Downers Grove South (this week) and Leyden. Downers South had one conference loss through late last week.

“We’re doing pretty well,” said Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner. “We have good pitching. Ryan Mintz and Jack Nilles are three-year varsity starters for us and Dax Meyer was with us as a sophomore. Joey Guthrie has really stepped up for us and thrown the ball well. That gives us four starters that we can intermix at any time.”

Wisner said the team has excelled at the plate as well. “We’re swinging the bats well,” he said. “Jack Hines is hitting .492, so he’s almost at .500, and he leads us in RBI and extra-base hits. Scott and Sam Tumilty are hitting well over .300. Ryan Mintz and Trevor Jaloszynski are the same.

Guys are hitting the ball well. We’re also fast on the bases. We’re causing trouble out there for other teams because we can run.”

Wisner said the 12-0 start in the conference is something to be proud of. “With the three-game series in our conference that’s tough,” he said. “You play that team a lot and you start learning a lot about them

and they learn a lot about you. Our conference has good teams in it.

Hinsdale South is good. We played Morton and there were some close games. Addison Trail battled us.

The fact that we are staying in it and doing what we are doing is exceptional. We still have Downers South and Leyden left and those are good teams. The other thing is our bye week in the conference is at the end of the season so we’re playing these conference series one after the other.”

Wisner said the team’s sustained strong play is not surprising to him given the amount of veteran varsity players on the roster. “These guys as sophomores won the regional and five of them started,” the coach explained.

“Last year we were 20-15 and it was not our best year, but we still won a regional and were competing for a sectional championship. These guys have an awesome work ethic.

We had a great summer and they had great winter workouts. They have been great. This doesn’t shock me.

I’m so happy for the boys.”

Willowbrook was slated to play Downers Grove South this week in a key WSC Gold series that was supposed to start Monday at Downers South and conclude today with the finale of the series back at Downers.

“That could determine the conference,” said Wisner. “They have one loss. It’s a huge series. We always want to win the conference, but that is never our biggest goal. We always talk about playing good at the end of the year. We want to do that. We talk it up about playing all the way through the playoffs. We’ve won back-to-back regionals here. These kids are very focused.”

If a team can’t score any runs, they can’t win.

Willowbrook’s pitchers subscribed to that philosophy and then some in a trio of recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division victories.

Willowbrook pitchers threw three shutouts in wins against Morton, Leyden and Addison Trail. Those wins put Willowbrook at 4-0 in WSC Gold play.

In a 10-0 win against District 88 neighbor Addison Trail, Caitlyn Kulczyski threw a six-inning no-hitter. She struck out 14 batters and walked two, facing two batters over the minimum. Kulczyski threw 57 of 84 pitches for strikes and pitched a first strike to 16 of the 20 batters she faced.

Willowbrook had 12 hits in the game. Samantha Mishlove had a hit and a run scored. Annemarie Knudtson had a double, a home run

and three RBI. Kulczyski helped herself at the plate with three hits, a run scored and two RBI. Emma Barrington went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Katie Pettinger had a hit and a run scored.

The Warriors also beat Leyden by a 3-0 count in eight innings. Kulczyski threw a three-hitter, going eight innings and allowing three hits, while striking out seven and walking none.

She faced two batters over the minimum thanks to Willowbrook turning a double play in the game. Kulczyski threw 69 of 98 pitches for strikes.

Willowbrook had only four hits in the pitchers’ duel. Caroline Dooley, Amy Bussa, Shannon Knudtson and Kayla Neff each had a hit. Mishlove, Annemarie Knudtson and Bussa each had one RBI. Shannon Knudtson, Neff and Pettinger each scored a run. Dooley had a double. The Warriors scored three runs in the top of the eighth after a scoreless seven innings by both teams.

Fenton girls track team piles up personal bests Bison first at own invite and MSC quad; Matuszewski excelling in leadership role

Things are looking up for the Fenton girls track team.

Coach Frank Kekstadt’s squad won a Metro Suburban Conference quad earlier in April and also took first place at the Bison invitational, while also placing fourth at the Glenbard South invitational.

At Glenbard South, senior Hanna Matuszewski took second in the 200.

Kekstadt noted Fenton racked up 79 personal records after the team’s first two outdoor meets.

At the Bison invitational, Fenton won the 3,200, 400 and 1,600 relays.

Junior Emily Trzmielewski won the pole vault, while freshman Ally Durkowski was first in the 400 and sophomore Analisa Murillo was first in the high jump.

“The youngest team I have ever coached is consistently getting better during the outdoor season,” said Kekstadt. “We are staying healthy and maintaining focus.”

No sure bets yet among plans for bill legalizing sports gambling in Illinois Odds look good for mobile betting

With five plans being considered, it’s anyone guess what legalized sports gambling will look like in Illinois if the Legislature approves a bill this spring.

One element of several of those plans might not yet be a safe bet. The wisdom of having a $10 million onetime licensing fee was questioned during a second hearing on sports gambling by the House Revenue and Finance subcommittee in Chicago April 25.

Testimony from the hearings will be used to reconcile the plans proposed in Rep. Michael Zalewski’s (D-Riverside) holder bill, House Bill 3308.

The proposed licensing fee would be paid by sports betting operators, such as casinos, race tracks or online platforms.

“If the licensing fee is too high, it’s going to prohibit people from entering the market,” said Robert Davidman, a marketing professional who has helped launch several online gaming

Pennsylvania, where the fee is $10 million, has not sold all of its available licenses, Davidman said.

In his proposed fiscal year 2020 budget, Gov. J.B. Pritzker uses the sale of 20 licenses as a source of more than $200 million in new revenue.

A safer bet among the proposals might be the allowance of mobile betting.

“Mobile sports wagering is not only the future, it’s the now,” said Jake Williams of iDEA Growth, a notfor-profit sports betting association.

He said mobile betting accounts for roughly 80 percent of New Jersey sports wagers.

Zalewski, who is the subcommittee chairman, agreed.

“We’ve become aware that states that don’t have a mobile piece don’t fare very well,” he said.

That is bad news for one of the state’s proposed plans, which would have sports betting overseen by the Illinois Lottery without any online component.

Then, there is the question of which sports to include.

Larry Lyons, athletics director at Illinois State University, spoke on behalf of most of the state’s 13 schools with Division I athletics.

“We are in agreement that we oppose legalized gambling on college sports,” he said, because it brings bettors too close to young athletes who are still maturing.

But others said there still would be illegal gambling on college sports if they are not included in the bill.

One emerging sport that could be included is electronic gaming, or eSports competitions for games like DOTA II, League of Legends and Fortnite.

Bob Greenlee of eSports company Tusk Strategies argued that eSports are more popular and professional than many people think.

No date has been set for the subcommittee’s next hearing on sports gambling.

Kekstadt noted the team graduated 12 four-year seniors last year, including an all-state pole vaulter. “We had to reload in our field events,” he said. “We have freshmen filling varsity spots in shot put, discus, pole vault, long jump and triple jump. We now are scoring with our freshmen in the field events, which has given us momentum during the outdoor season.”

Kekstadt applauded Matuszewski’s efforts. “Hanna has stepped up as the team leader on the track,” the coach said. “She is performing at a high level and developing into

a strong leader. She is more relaxed this year and understands her role.

She is one of the fastest girls in Fenton history and is confident in her abilities.”

Alyssa Silva is continuing her strong running efforts from the fall cross-country season. “Alyssa Silva had a great cross-country season which is now paying off in track,” said Kekstadt. “Her work ethic and performance has improved during her senior season and she is PR-ing in her distance events this track season.”
