DuPage County, SCARCE award Sustainable Design Challenge top prizes Addison Trail High School student earns Best Stormwater Design During a recently monthly meeting, the DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee held a ceremony to honor the students from this year’s 13th annual Sustainable Design Challenge.

“It’s an honor for myself, along with other DuPage County Board members, to recognize all of the hard work the students and teachers put into these designs,” said DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee Chairman Jim Zay. “I was thoroughly impressed by all of the projects this year, and especially by those awarded today.”

Sponsored by DuPage County Stormwater Management, SCARCE coordinates the annual event, which encourages students to construct building and landscape models using environmental and water-friendly design practices. Local professionals working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields served as judges.

ComEd Icebox Derby STEM event for teen girls This summer, 30 young women from the Chicago area will build both high-tech racecars and pathways to their futures in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Girls can apply now for the sixth-annual ComEd Icebox Derby, a competition that challenges teens from across Chicagoland to transform recycled refrigerators into electric and solar-powered racecars.

Applications are available now at IceboxDerby.com The application period will close on Friday, June 7. The application is open to any girl who is an Illinois resident between the ages of 13 and 18.

Every participant will receive a $1,500 scholarship for completing the program. They will work alongside ComEd mentors to build a fridge car and learn about practical applications of STEM in daily life and STEM career options. The competition will culminate with a once-in-a-lifetime experience as participants race their electric- and solar-powered fridge cars at Daley Plaza in Chicago on Saturday, Aug. 3.

“We’ve got to engage and empower young women to continue their STEM studies and see opportunities available to them down the road,” said Joe Dominguez, CEO of ComEd. “Through the Icebox Derby, these young women work alongside women at ComEd who are leaders and have built their own STEM careers, and learn about the paths they are taking. We hope to inspire them to come back and work for us someday.”

This summer, nearly 10 percent of former Icebox Derby participants will work at ComEd as summer interns.

The Icebox Derby was launched six years ago to educate and empower young women to explore careers in STEM and become the innovative workforce of the future.

Bill allowing undocumented immigrants access to student financial aid goes to governor Also applies to transgender people who have not registered for the draft

The Illinois Senate on May 8 passed and sent to Gov. J.B. Pritzker a bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to receive state-funded student financial aid to attend college.

House Bill 2691, known as the Retaining Illinois Students and Equity, or RISE Act, passed the House on April 11. It also would extend eligibility for the state’s Monetary Award Program, or MAP grants, to certain transgender individuals who are disqualified from state or federal financial aid because they have not registered for the draft.

“Just because someone is undocumented doesn’t mean they aren’t members of our society. It doesn’t mean that they don’t contribute to our society,” Sen. Omar Aquino, a Chicago Democrat and lead sponsor of the bill in the Senate, said during floor debate. “Undocumented families in Illinois are Illinois families. They are Illinois residents that pay taxes — taxes that actually, because they are undocumented, they are not able to receive the return on those taxes back to them.”

But the idea provoked strong opposition from Republicans, who argued that expanding the pool of students who are eligible for MAP grants by allowing non-citizens to receive them would crowd out legal citizens from getting them.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the math is simple,” Sen. Jim Oberweis, a Sugar Grove Republican, said. “Each and every one of us have students in our districts who are relying on MAP

funding. If we’re going to take some of that funding away from our citizens and give it to non-citizens, that means we’re depriving some of our citizens, some of our students, from being able to have that funding to help with their education. This is just absolutely, fundamentally wrong.”

Aquino conceded Illinois does not fully fund the MAP grant program, saying grants are awarded on a firstcome-first-served basis, and there are often more applicants than there are grant funds to go around. But he said that issue is separate from the issue of eligibility.

“I’d love to leave here at the end of this session saying we fully funded MAP. I would love that,” Aquino said.

“But that’s not this bill. This bill just opens up opportunities to students to have the option to be a college student and hopefully get a degree.”

Other Democrats argued that extending eligibility for the grants would benefit the state at-large.

“As you know, these students are already enrolled in college,” said Sen. Iris Martinez, also of Chicago. “They are looking at professional careers.

These are the future doctors, our future nurses, our future professors.

These are individuals who are right now getting a profession and will someday be serving us. Let it be in the health field, let it be in education.”

The bill also eliminates one of the rules for students to continue their eligibility for the grants beyond their sophomore year.

credit hours must qualify as a junior in their degree program to be eligible to continue. Critics of that rule, however, have said it works against students from disadvantaged backgrounds and low-income communities, particularly students of color, who often need to take remedial courses early in their college careers before they can handle regular college-level classes.

The bill passed the Senate on a vote of 35-to-15, and will head to Gov. Pritzker.

Addison Trail student receives Conservation Scholarship Last week the Illinois Conservation Foundation (ICF) announced the recipients of the 2019 Conservation Achievement Scholarships. Addison Trail High School student McKenna M. Gayon was one of three in the state to receive the honor as well as $2000 to apply toward college expenses.

“Through the Conservation Achievement Scholarship program, the ICF is able to recognize and reward outstanding Illinois youth for their conservation stewardship and protection of our natural resources,” said Colleen Callahan, chairman of the ICF Board and director of the Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources.

“Congratulations to [the recipients] for their passion and dedication to making our world a better place and setting an example for all of us.”

More about McKenna Gayon McKenna Gayon worked as a student volunteer on conservation and education programs through the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, including efforts to recover and protect populations of endangered Blanding’s turtles. Working with partner agencies, Gayon has also assisted with projects to enhance habitat for other endangered and threatened species, helped raise and release pollinators, including Monarch butterflies, and worked at a local wildlife rehabilitation facility helping care for injured and orphaned animals. Gayon is planning to attend Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisc.

Lake Park begins ‘A to Z Countdown’ Lake Park School began its end of the year “A to Z Countdown” last week, when a special event or activity is planned for each of the last 26 days of the school year.

The alphabet fun began with “A” day on Tuesday, April 30 when representatives from Brookfield Zoo brought some of their favorite animals for students to see, touch and learn about. The Animal Day visit was sponsored by State Representative Kathleen Willis.

dents and staff duct-taped Principal Smogor to the gym’s stage wall.

The duct taping and an afternoon movie were planned to celebrate the school’s reaching their goal of collecting $3000 for their Pennies for Patients fundraising drive.

Other activities planned for the days ahead include a Funky Sock Hop on “F” day, Healthy living and jump rope activities on “H” day, a mystery Reader on “R” day, and a visit from the Jesse White Tumblers on “W” day.

Coalition warns of ‘commercialization’ of marijuana CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

A coalition opposed to recreational marijuana legalization shared concerns about public safety effects they say will result if the measure before the Illinois Senate becomes law.

The Smart Approach to Marijuana coalition, which spoke at an Illinois Statehouse news conference May 8, included police chiefs, sheriffs, representatives of the NAACP, the Catholic Conference of Illinois and other advocacy organizations.

They warned that “commercialization and normalization” of marijuana resulting from the language in Senate Bill 7 could lead to in-

creased usage and more instances of people driving under the influence.

“We’re concerned about mainly two things: The addictive potential of recreational marijuana, as well as the questionable wisdom of the state commercializing a drug into an industry that will profit from it,” said Bob Gilligan of the Catholic Conference of Illinois.

Gilligan said proponents are incorrectly categorizing legalization as a social justice issue, and he noted language to expunge the records of people charged with marijuana offenses could be filed independently of the legalization bill.

Theresa Haley, president of the civil rights organization NAACP,

said despite supporters’ claims that the bill contains equity language, legalization would target poor communities for profit.

“You’re creating an addiction; you’re adding to an addiction that’s already out there that’s illegal and you’re making it legal and more people are going to suffer,” Haley said. “Again, rich people are getting more rich on the backs of poor people.”

Des Plaines Democratic Rep. Marty Moylan urged his colleagues to oppose the legalization effort, framing it as a “David vs.

Goliath” fight against big money.

He likened the marijuana industry’s push for legalization as “another big tobacco.”

Bruce Kettelkamp, Christian County sheriff, cited a Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas study, which said marijuana-related traffic deaths more than doubled from 55 deaths in 2013 to 125 deaths in 2016.

“I’m trying to protect everybody in the state of Illinois from having this bill passed,” Kettelkamp said.

Law enforcement also opposed a measure which would allow a person to possess five homegrown marijuana plants, claiming it “invites foreign cartels, drug traffickers and organized crime to move into neighborhoods and has proven to be a disaster in other states.”

Andy Duran, executive director of Linking Efforts Against Drugs, said the bill as it stands is about profits.

“What we’re really talking about is the creation of a fully commercialized industry that is incentivized to sell as much marijuana as it can,” he said. “If this were truly a bill about public health, creating an industry of addiction profiteers would be strictly off the table.”

Duran, whose organization works to fight youth addiction, said the state could take a position between prohibition and commercialization, and he noted he was not opposed to decriminalization or medicinal marijuana programs.

I was deeply concerned when I read the text – I could hardly be- Aaron Weiner lieve that the bill sponsors would, in the name of public health and “community restoration,” propose a system so clearly designed to sell as much marijuana and THC products to our community as possible.

Consider: • This bill sets no THC caps whatsoever.

• It allows for advertising of marijuana products.

• It allows sale of high-potency THC extracts, which have been shown, time and time again, to be linked to the development of psychosis and schizophrenia.

• It allows for sale of THC-laced candies, chocolates and other edibles.

• It allows for sale to individuals as young as 21, when their brain has not finished developing, and marijuana has been shown to, literally, alter the physical shape of the brain.

• It allows for a pot shop to open as little as 1,000 feet from a school. That’s less than one-fifth of a mile or about a three-minute walk.

This is not what a public health-driven drug policy change looks like. If we alter our drug policy, it should be to reduce the number of drug users in Illinois. This bill will do the exact opposite.

We deserve better than this. And we can do better. I call on our elected officials to make the choice to stand up and protect those they represent: reject this façade of a bill and insist on developing a better one – one developed in conjunction with healthcare experts.

To anyone who shares my concerns: please reach out to your lawmakers immediately. They listen to who leaves them messages and they do pay attention to how many of their constituents write them e-mails. Now is the time to speak up. The bill is set to be voted on before the current legislative session ends on May 31.

Let’s work together to push back against big business interests and keep our community healthy, safe and productive.

Conroy brings attention to Mental Health Awareness Month In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, issued the following statement: “Mental Health Awareness Month was established by Congress in 1949, bringing attention to the suffering of World War II veterans upon their return home. Prior to that, the first organization of its kind - Mental Health America - used the month of May to generate awareness about the deficient care available to people with mental illnesses after the organization’s founder suffered inhumane treatment while he was institutionalized.

“This year marks the 70th anniversary of national recognition for Mental Health Awareness Month, and while we’ve made significant advances in our understanding and treatment of mental illness, access to information and early intervention for the general public is wholly inadequate. As the chair of the first Illinois House Mental Health Committee, I’ve worked with my colleagues to engage healthcare providers, experts and most importantly individuals living with mental illnesses to develop policies that promote

healthy lifestyles and provide greater access to resources for the 20 percent of Illinoisans who chronically struggle with their mental health.

“This year I introduced the Mental Health Modernization and Access Improvement Act, which would increase access to affordable mental health care for people living in all communities.

I’ve also cosponsored legislation to provide mental health education and screenings in our schools, empowering young people to seek out the care they need early.

Bigfoot, small foot

The legend of Bigfoot lives on in American folklore, and although I don’t know for sure if the big and hairy creature actually exists in the wild, I do believe in big foot, or at least big feet. I live with a bunch of them. (Big and hairy big-footed creatures, that is.)

My husband and sons tower over me by eight to 10 inches. They all sport feet that hover around size 11 or larger so there’s no shortage of Bigfoots at our house.

I line their shoes up on a shelf by the back door. It’s a morning ritual.

Then, one by one, the boys joined him in big foot status. I no longer know who is awake and walking (stomping) around upstairs because their stomps are practically indistinguishable.

My youngest son was the last to join the big foot crew. Shoes he wore just a couple of years ago seem miniature in comparison to his now gigantic feet. I’ve taken possession of one of his old pair of slider sandals. They are now three sizes too small for him, a couple of sizes

Cullerton takes a stand against government redundancy To help eliminate redundant bureaucracy, State Senator Tom Cullerton passed a measure to prohibit the State of Illinois from creating new units of local government.

Cullerton (D-Villa Park) passed Senate Bill 1215, which would prohibit the General Assembly from creating any new unit of local government until Jan. 1, 2022.

“As a state with nearly 7,000 units of government, we need to take proactive steps to reduce and eliminate unnecessary layers bureaucracy,” Cullerton said. “This measure will put a stop to the overzealous creation of government entities while our municipalities evaluate and consolidate services to promote the efficient use of taxpayer dollars.”

Senate Bill 1215 also prohibits dividing existing units of local government but does not apply to the creation of a new unit of local government from the consolidation of two or more preexisting units of local government.

In 2013, Cullerton worked with DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin to implement an effective government consolidation model to eliminate redundant forms of government.

Last year, Cullerton continued to advance his mission of making sure government is working in tune with the needs of Illinois’ residents.

To continue his mission to ensure government is working for Illinois residents, Cullerton passed House Bill 5777, which decreases the waiting period from 150 to 60 days after the first

mandated county audit is performed.

The law went into effect on Jan. 1, 2019.

“Consolidating government the right way will help lower property taxes for DuPage County residents,” he said. “Speeding up the process will help residents experience government savings sooner rather than later.”

Previously, it could take over two and a half years for some Illinois counties to consolidate local government entities.

Senate Bill 1215 passed the Senate with unanimous support and is now in the House for consideration.

While big feet surround me, we have a set of tiny ones in our midst. A new granddaughter was thankfully born with ten fingers, ten toes and two perfect little feet. She doesn’t wear shoes yet – unless it is a special occasion.

Ditto that for socks. She is like a mini hippy – barefoot and carefree. Sucking on her bare toes.

Like my daughter, I didn’t put shoes on my babies until absolutely necessary. I read somewhere that once you do, and once they are walking, they begin the long and arduous process of walking away.

I didn’t want them to walk

away. Then again, of course I did.

Parenting is like that: a perfect dichotomous set-up. You can be completely right and terribly wrong all at the same time.

My granddaughter just started walking. She staggers with the unsteadiness of a baby learning to walk, arms stretched outward to help with balance. Her gait reminds me of Frankenstein.

She does not.

This summer we’ll spend time at the lake, walking on the beach.

We’ll all make footprints – some large, some not so large and some tiny. I hope no one mistakes them for Bigfoot.

Whatever the size, they’ll make their imprint in the sand much like

they’ve all made an imprint on my heart. Big, small and everything in between.

Because despite the fact that we are all walking our own path, each of us making our own footprints we are also making them together, walking it together.

Cheesy as Gouda, I understand.

But that’s family. And I’ll take my cheese any way I can get it –hairy, big footed and all.

Video gambling industry: Don’t raise taxes, raise the bets

If the state of Illinois wants more revenue from video gaming, one gaming industry executive said May 9, lawmakers should loosen betting restrictions rather than raise video gambling tax rates.

Ivan Hernandez, who heads the Illinois Gaming Machine Operators Association, offered that proposal to the state House Executive Committee, which is considering several alternatives for increasing state revenue from video gambling.

“Our proposal is projected to far exceed (Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s) request, without resorting to a tax increase,” Hernandez said.

The Executive Committee, chaired

by Democratic Rep. Chris Welch of Hillside, heard testimony May 9 from representatives of the video gambling industry who unanimously oppose a proposed tax hike that Gov. Pritzker outlined in his late-February budget address. No legislation has been introduced so far.

Video gambling machines are taxed at 30 percent, with the remaining money split 50-50 between the machine operator and the establishment housing the machines. Pritzker’s plan would increase that state’s tax rate to 50 percent, resulting in more than $100 million in new revenue for state and local governments.

Opponents have framed their argument around the local establishments—mom-and-pop restaurants,

bars, VFW posts and more—that they say rely on the machines for increased foot traffic and, ultimately, successful business.

Elements of Hernandez’s proposal include raising the bet limit on single plays from $2 to $4, increasing the maximum winnings on a single play from $500 to $1,199, allowing games with higher jackpots, and increasing the number of gambling terminals allowed at one location from five to six.

Those measures, Hernandez said, would create $210 million in new tax revenue the first two years, without changing the tax rates.

Policy objectives were not so clear cut for the other topic of the hearing, which focused on the largely unregulated market of “sweepstakes” ma-

chines that the Illinois Gaming Board, along with many state and federal courts, have maintained are illegal.

Sweepstakes are in many ways similar to video gambling machines, but do not fall under the same state oversight, nor are taxes on them paid to state and local governments, according to a WBEZ investigation last year.

Because they face no other regulation than to be registered with the Illinois Department of Revenue, the machines can be found in places where video gambling terminals have been banned, WBEZ reported.

Cory Aronovitz, a lawyer with the Chicago-based Casino Law Group, told lawmakers unfamiliar with the matter that the machines are kiosks for “product promotion,” meaning a per-

son pays cash to the machine, receives, for example, a coupon for a discount on items on a website, then gets the chance to win cash by playing a slotslike game.

Rep. Keith Wheeler (R-Oswego), argued sweepstakes machines should be placed under the same regulatory laws as video gambling terminals. He said any regulatory changes addressing sweepstakes machines would be packaged in a gambling overhaul bill that has yet to appear in the Legislature.

On top of considering how to legalize sports betting and whether to allow more casinos in Illinois, state lawmakers are considering changes to policy affecting the video gambling terminals that appear in almost 7,000 local establishments across the state.

Two new plans in play as debate about legalizing sports gambling continues

There are now almost as many different plans to legalize sports betting in Illinois as there are states that have legalized it in any fashion.

As Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb on May 8 signed a sports betting bill in that state—making it the ninth state to do so since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year allowed the practice— lawmakers in Illinois unleashed two more plans for stakeholders to consider, bringing the total number of plans in Illinois to seven.

The two plans were filed just hours before a House subcommittee MET to discuss sports gambling in Illinois, leaving testifiers the difficult task of deciding their stance on the new plans

without having had much time to review them.

Rep. Michael Zalewski (D-Riverside), who has taken the charge on legalizing sports betting in Illinois, filed the two amendments to House Bill 1260 on May 8.

Each amendment outlines yet another system by which lawmakers hope to support Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s goal of bringing more than $200 million in sports wagering revenues to Illinois in the next fiscal year.

The first plan would allow both online sports gambling and brick-andmortar betting at the state’s casinos, race tracks, betting parlors and video gambling terminals. Licensing fees would range from $5 million to $10 million, while wagering would be

taxed at 25 percent.

Under that plan, the Illinois Lottery could also allow wagering in 2,500 retail locations, with a $30 million initial license fee and a 100-percent tax.

The second plan limits the number of licenses to seven for brick-and-mortar locations and three for online operators. Licensing fees in this plan range from $5 million to $20 million, but the 25 percent tax on wagering stays the same.

Also under the second plan, professional sports leagues would be paid a 0.2-percent royalty in exchange for official league data. Representatives from Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association said their data is the speediest and most accurate available, and that they could

boost the sports betting industry in Illinois if they were the sole providers of data.

“If we are being compensated by the casinos, we have a financial incentive to drive up the amount of money bet in Illinois,” said Bryan Seeley of MLB. Rep. Jonathan Carroll, a Democrat from Northbrook, questioned whether third-party data providers don’t already supply speedy data to operators, and wondered what the leagues would do to increase betting in the state.

“If our state is looking to generate revenue, … what is the return on investment,” Carroll asked, referring to the league royalty fees.

Representatives from the state’s race tracks and horsemen’s associa-

tions were also present, and made arguments that sports betting should be coupled with expanded gambling at race tracks to bring back business.

At this year’s commencement for graduate students, the Elmhurst College Board of Trustees will confer an honorary doctoral degree on Howard Howard Reich Reich, an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, author and longtime arts critic at the Chicago Tribune.

On Thursday evening, May 30, Reich will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the graduate ceremony, and will deliver the commencement address.

The College will recognize Reich’s distinguished career and contributions, in particular his focus on the Holocaust and genocide. The son of two Holocaust survivors, Reich discovered his parents’ neverdiscussed story and brought it to the screen in “Prisoner of Her Past,” a PBS documentary he wrote, coproduced and narrated.

He brought this story to Elmhurst College in 2010 for that year’s Holocaust Lecture. He returned in 2017 to reflect on the work and legacy of Nobel Peace Prize laureate

Elie Wiesel. At the time, Reich was developing his recently published book, “The Art of Inventing Hope: Intimate Conversations with Elie Wiesel.” Reich worked on the project with Wiesel during the last four years of Wiesel’s life.

Reich has covered music and the arts for the Chicago Tribune since 1978, and currently is in postproduction on his third documentary, “Left-Handed Pianist,” based on

Fenton girls track team competes at sectional Bison baseball downs Elmwood Park

The Fenton girls track team wrapped up its season recently at the Class 3A Glenbard North sectional in Carol Stream.

Fenton finished 13th as a team in the standings and had no individual qualifiers for the state meet.

Senior Hanna Matuszewski was eighth in the 100 run with a time of 13.11. She also took sixth in the 200 with a time of 26.96.

Sophomore Guadalupe Honorato was 25th in the 1,600 at 6:44.59.

Ruth Kirkwood, a senior, was 22nd in the 3,200 with a time of 14:10.66.

Junior Britania Aguilar took 27th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 20.02. Nicolette Castillo was 25th in the 300 hurdles at 58.78.

Fenton was 14th in the 400 relay with a time of 56.38 with Theresa Clanton, Ahtziri Cardenas, Rebecca Millard and Sophia Haska.

Fenton also was 14th in the 800 relay in 2:03.29 with Clanton, Cardenas, Millard and Haska.

The Bison took eighth in the 1,600 relay after Analisa Murillo, Ally Durkowski, Mackenzie Miller and Hailey Miller ran 4:25.19, much lower than their 4:26.04 seed time. Durkowski and Hailey Miller are freshmen, while Murillo is a sophomore.

Murillo tied for 11th in the high jump at 4-9. Julianna Krebasch tied for 11th in the pole vault at 7-3.

Noelia Vazquez was 29th in the shot put at 25-2 3/4. She also took 26th in the discus at 70-8.

Fenton baseball The Fenton baseball team split a pair of Metro Suburban Conference Red Division games against Elmwood Park recently.

In a 4-2 win against Elmwood Park, Fenton came back from a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the fourth inning and then added a single run in the seventh inning for some breathing room.

Andrew Pietrucha was 2-for-4, while Michael Rago went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Jose Alvarez was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Aidan Kress went 1-for-3, while Nicholas DeSimone had an RBI. David Burch walked twice and scored two runs. Kress’ hit was a double, while Burch and Rago stole two bases each.

Fenton had seven stolen bases in the game.

Pietrucha was the winning pitcher. He threw a complete-game four-hitter and struck out five.

Fenton then lost 7-1 to Elmwood Park.

The game was tied 1-1 until Elmwood scored five runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Burch was 2-for-4, while Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Kress, Pietrucha, Rago and John Salgado each had a hit. Rago had an RBI. Alvarez and Salgado each doubled. Kress took the loss on the mound. He fanned five in 4 1/3 innings. Rago struck out four in 2 2/3 innings.

Fenton was 4-14 overall through late last week.

Fenton boys track team fares well at MSC Red meet

Cabral, Herringer and Deckert named allconference

The Fenton boys track team enjoyed some top-notch individual performances at the recent Metro Suburban Conference Red Division meet.

Javier Cabral took second in the 400 at 52.81 and was seventh in the 200 at 23.94. Both were personal records. Cabral earned all-MSC Red honors.

Nick Herringer was second in the 300 hurdles (43.5) and seventh in the 110 hurdles. His 300 time was a personal record. Herringer also earned all-conference accolades.

Jimmy Deckert took second in the discus throw at 131-9 1/2 and was fourth in the shot put with a personal record of 42-10. He also was allMSC Red. Jimmy Palumbo earned a personal record in the 1,600 at 4:49.99 as did Liam McCaluley at 5:54.51.

“We competed well in our conference meet with some strong performances,” said Fenton coach Clint Porter.

Porter also was encouraged by his team’s performance at the frosh-soph level. “We also have some very good newcomers slash future stars at the frosh-soph level,” he said.

Sophomore Quinn Wilcoxen won the shot put and the discus titles with marks of 37-7 1/2 in the shot and 102-11 in the discus. “Quinn is new to track and field this year,” said Porter. “He is an athlete we look forward to watching develop in the next two years.”

Sophomore Juan Carlos Sosa took third in the frosh-soph 400 at 57.62, which is just off his season best of 57.31. He also was a member of the varsity 400 relay team that took fifth.

Freshman Kasper Widlo was third in the frosh-soph 200 with a personal record of 25.34. He also anchored the 400 relay and was the lead off for the frosh-soph 800 relay team that took second.

Sophomore Matt Sisto won the frosh-soph 3,200 in 11:05.96 and took third in the frosh-soph 1,600 with a time of 5:03.94. “Matt was incredible,” said Porter.

Freshman Ryan Rebolledo was fourth in the frosh-soph 400 in 59.34 and also was a member of several Fenton relays this year.

Addison Trail boys track team competes in WSC Gold meet Blazers earn numerous first-place finishes at frosh-soph level

The Addison Trail boys track team has seen steady progress this season, according to coach Jim Ziebka.

Heading into the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet, Ziebka noted the Blazers have set at least 20 personal records in every meet except one, and in that contest they had 18.

“Our team is comprised primarily of young guys so we had to have a lot of the young guys competing on the varsity level,” he explained.

“I have been very pleased with their progress throughout the season. Our upperclassmen have been pushed by the younger guys all year. Depth has proven to be a bit of an issue but we have been able to mitigate the ups and downs well. We have a solid core of team-first guys who show up to work hard every day in practice. The future

looks good if these guys can maintain the same level of drive that has carried them through this point in the season.

Senior Cesar Herrera has been a top performer in the 110 and 300 hurdles as well as the 1,600 relay. Junior Jonathan Ramos has competed well in the 3,200 and 1,600 relays as well as the 800.

Junior Quincy Gunnerson has been a key in the triple jump and the 800 and 1,600 relays, while junior Sulaemon Ahmed has starred in the triple and long jumps, as well as the 800 and 400 relays.

Sophomore Dylan Moran has set school records for the 3,200 both indoors and outdoors, and also has performed well in the 1,600.

Other key performers for the Blazers include sophomore Cole Greaves (3,200, 1,600 relays and 400), sophomore Horfanel Vivero (400), freshman Alex Martinez (3,200 and 1,600

runs), freshman John Taci (400 and 1,600 relay) and freshman Patrick Campbell (long and triple jumps).

At the recent WSC Gold meet at Hinsdale South, Sergio Serna took 12th in the 100 with a time of 12.52.

He was seventh in the 200 at 24.46.

Taci was sixth in the 400 at 55.83, while Ramos was sixth in the 800 at 2:07.17.

Moran was seventh in the 1,600 with a time of 4:49.38. He took fourth in the 3,200 at 10:05.88.

Herrera was fourth in the 110 hurdles in 16.87. He also was fourth in the 300 hurdles at 43.92. Addison Trail was sixth in the 400 relay in 49.54 with Eddy Espinoza, Jaden Wease, Gunnerson and Serna.

The 800 relay team of Ahmed, Wease, Gunnerson and Serna took sixth at 1:39.24 and the 1,600 relay team of Taci, Greaves, Gunnerson and Herrera was seventh in 3:49.25. The

3,200 relay team took fifth in 9:11.89 with Taci, Greaves, Ramos and Lukas Rodriguez.

Sal Napoli was 11th in the shot put at 34-1 1/2. He also was 10th in the discus with a throw of 97-0. Ahmed was 12th in the long jump at 17-4. He also was eighth in the triple jump at 37-1.

Frosh-soph conference meet highlights included Morri Bernardo taking fifth in the 400 at 59.62. Martinez was fourth in the 1,600 at 4:57.18.

Martinez won the frosh-soph 3,200 title in 10:39.92. His next closest competitor was 10:49.98.

Hanza Kittaneh won the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.59. He was second in the 300 hurdles at 45.76.

Raul Villarreal was second in the high jump at 5-4, while Robert Roszkiewicz was fourth at 5-2.

Campbell won the triple jump frosh-soph title at 39-4 1/2.

Willowbrook baseball team surpasses 20-win barrier Warriors sweep series from Leyden

The wins keep piling up for the Willowbrook baseball team.

The Warriors closed out their West Suburban Conference Gold Division championship season by sweeping a three-game series from Leyden.

Willowbrook ended last week at 22-4-1 overall and finished WSC

Gold play at 17-1.

In a 6-0 win over Leyden in Villa Park, the Warriors scored all six of their runs in the first inning.

Sam Tumilty went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Jack Hines went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Trevor Jaloszynski went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Jeremy Conforti went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Marshall McDonnell had a hit and an RBI. Sam Tumilty, Scott Tumilty and Anthony Yannotti each hit doubles. Hines had a triple. Scott

Tumilty stole two bases. Willowbrook had seven steals in the game.

Jack Nilles was the winning pitcher. He went six innings and allowed four hits and struck out nine.

In a 3-1 WSC Gold loss to Downers Grove South, Hines went 2-for4, while Sam Tumilty, Ryan Mintz, Conforti, McDonnell and Danny Holloway each had a hit. McDonnell had an RBI. Hines stole two bases.

Andrew Schellhorn took the loss in relief. Dax Meyer and Ethan Pieniazek also pitched.

In a 17-1 win against Leyden, Willowbrook had 11 hits and scored 12 runs in the third inning.

Blazers softball team goes 3-1 during fourgame stretch

Addison Trail sophomore Matt Wojdak competed in the recent IHSA boys gymnastics state finals meet at Hoffman Estates High School.

Wojdak tied for 13th on floor exercise with a score of 9.20. The top 12 competitors in each event advanced to the state finals.

Addison Trail softball The Addison Trail softball team was successful in a recent fourgame stretch.

The Blazers were 10-6 winners in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play against Morton. Morton led 5-4 after the first inning, but Addison Trail regained the lead and went up 7-6 after two innings and scored three more times in the third inning.

Sophia Hawkins went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Anna Ruffolo was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Isabel Aramburu went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Valentina Pentrelli went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Madison Domek went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Taylor Gloms was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Hawkins had a double, while Pentrelli had a triple.

Domek was the winning pitcher.

The Willowbrook softball team moved its overall mark to 15-8 on the season with a pair of recent wins against Chicago Taft and Fenton.

Barrington, Bussa and Knudtson each doubled. Perry had a triple.

She struck out nine over seven innings and allowed two hits.

Coach Rachel Karos lauded the recent work of Caroline Dooley, who was the winning pitcher in a game against Morton and came up big on defense with a diving catch against Leyden. “Caroline is hitting the ball hard,” said Karos. “She homered against Addison Trail.”

Annemarie Knudtson hit .455 during a recent stretch with seven RBI that also included a home run against Addison Trail. Barrington hit .500 during a recent one-week timeframe.

Karos also was pleased with the pitching during a recent stretch of games where Dooley and Kulczyski didn’t give up a run. She’s also seen progress at the plate and in the field.

“We are hitting well and more importantly able to drive in runs at the right time,” Karos said recently. “We definitely are playing better defense lately and doing a better job at getting outs when our pitchers do their jobs to get our defense grounders and popups. We have been playing much better allaround softball.”

Through the first 16 games of the season, Bussa and Kulczyski were leading the team in hits with 23 each. Dooley and Barrington each had 19.

Dooley was tops with eight doubles, while Bussa had three triples and Kulczyski had two. Barrington and Annemarie Knudtson each had three home runs, while Dooley and Neff each had two. Annemarie Knudtson and Barrington each had 21 RBI. Bussa was tops with 19 runs scored, while Samantha Mishlove had 17 runs scored.

Kulczyski was hitting .479, while Barrington was at .475, Annemarie Knudtson was at .451 and Dooley was at .442.

Kulczyski had a 1.63 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings of pitching work. Dooley had 56 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings.

Willowbrook boys gymnasts Cooper Ross and Brendan Bailey capped off their seasons at the recent IHSA state finals meet in Hoffman Estates.

Ross took 38th in the state on pommel horse with a score of 7.65, while Bailey was 41st on vault with a score of 8.15.

Willowbrook girls badminton Willowbrook’s Hanna Konrath and Charlotte Dewyer competed in the recent IHSA badminton state finals meet held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Konrath made it to the fifth round of the consolation bracket. She opened play with a 21-9, 21-13 win against Lincoln-Way East and then scored a 21-18, 21-13 win against Evanston Township.

In the third round, Konrath lost 21-7, 21-6 to Naperville North. She came back to score a 22-20, 21-19 win against a Prospect player and then lost to another Prospect player 21-12, 21-11 in the fifth round of the singles consolation bracket.

Dewyer lost 22-20, 21-17 to Barrington in her opener, but came back to score a 21-3, 21-13 win over Metea Valley and a 12-21, 21-13, 2116 win against Glenbrook North in the second round of the consolation bracket. She was eliminated after a 13-21, 21-17, 22-20 loss to Buffalo Grove in the third round of the back draw.
