Munger impressive at Regional Business Outlook luncheon Advocates working together to solve state’s financial woes

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner was expected to speak at the 7th annual Regional Business Outlook luncheon on Tuesday, May 3, but had to decline and Illinois State Comptroller Leslie Munger delivered the keynote address instead. The luncheon was presented by Choose DuPage, IceMiller Legal Counsel and Mesirow Financial.

Sponsored by BMO Harris, Ball, Blooming Color Printing, Maclyn and PNC, the program began with DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin offering the DuPage County Business Outlook.

“We have done what we can to keep business costs low,” he said. “The property tax rate in the County has remained flat.

In sales tax, the county has been collecting a one-quarter cent sales tax, which is ending, so we can put that money back in the taxpayer’s pocket.”

A key theme of the luncheon was consolidation of governmental entities, an issue Cronin has been taking on ever since his days in the Illinois Senate.

The most prominent example was combining the juvenile detention facilities of DuPage and Kane Counties into one to save costs on operations, personnel and other resources. Cronin has been one of the most vocal advocates for

reducing the size of government.

Cronin urges reducing units of government “There are 8,480 units of local governments in Illinois and a dozen or so special taxes,”

Cronin said. “There are ‘ghost governments’ out there that fly under the radar and keep their allotment coming in from the state, while doing very little to serve the public.

“Three years ago, the Senate

tried to and were able to consolidate 13 units of government into one.”

Civic leaders in the notfor-profit industry, along with legislators have started the Transform Illinois task force,

signed by Governor Rauner in a personal visit he made to the DuPage Water Commission in October of 2014.

Open House meeting planned for Route 390 Tollway project Topics include upcoming construction, ‘cashless’ tolling

According to a release issued by the Illinois Tollway Authority, there will be a special open house meeting for the public to discuss and learn about the Route 390 Tollway project currently under construction.

“The Illinois Tollway is moving forward in 2016 with roadway construction on the eastern segment of the new

Illinois Route 390 Tollway from I-290 to Illinois Route 83, including completion of the frontage roads along Illinois Route 390 and construction of new interchanges at Wood Dale Road and Illinois Route 83. In addition, in 2016, work will continue on the I-290 Interchange at Illinois Route 390,” the release read.

The meeting will take place Thursday, May 12 from 4-7 p.m. at Elk Grove Village Hall, 901 Wellington Avenue, Elk Grove Village.

Community members and local businesses are invited to attend to learn more about the upcoming construction and what affect it might have on the area. There will also be infor-

mation shared by the plan for “cashless tolling” along Route 390 from Lake Street to I-290.

Cashless tolling is planned to begin on July 5.

The meeting will also provide information about the ongoing land acquisition for the Elgin O’Hare Western Access project.

Tollway staff will be on hand at the reception to explain the project and to answer questions, especially those about cashless tolling. The open house is free and open to the public.

More about cashless tolling Illinois Route 390 will be the roadway to open on the Illinois Tollway system to be all-electronic. Surveys indicate

that 90% of drivers currently driving in the area have already obtained I-PASS. Toll collection will begin July 5, 2016, on the first segment of the Illinois Route 390 Tollway from Lake Street (U.S. Route 20) to I-290. The allelectronic tolling gates on the western segment will be located west of Meacham Road/ Medinah Road, west of Roselle Road and west of Gary Avenue.

Installation of toll collection points east of I-290 will be completed as part of construction of the new roadway, and toll collection is expected to begin on the eastern segment by the end of 2017.

Altogether, there will be six all-electronic tolling places

along Illinois Route 390 and on the Ketter Drive entrance ramp.

According to the Tollway Authority, collection points which are closer together reduce the cost of shorter trips and ensure that the rate paid is fair and equitable.

Tolls for passenger vehicles range from 20 to 60 cents for I-PASS customers. Travelers who take the ramp at the Ketter Drive to enter westbound I-390 will pay 20 cents.

Passenger vehicles traveling the full length of Illinois Route 390 will pay $1.90, similar to the I-PASS toll paid to travel on the I-355 south extension between I-55 and I-80 For more information, visit illinoistollway.com.

Munger disburses MAP Grant payments for college students CHICAGO — On Thursday, May 5, Illinois State Comptroller Leslie Geissler Munger issued the following statement regarding student Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants: “Today, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission sent $164 million in MAP Grant vouchers to my office and we turned around the payments immediately. As a result, colleges and universities will receive payment to assist the 125,000 college students who rely upon that funding to further their education. Our students have suffered unacceptable hardship due to this

budget impasse and it is my priority to provide relief however possible.

“But this is not a long term solution. In fact, the MAP Grant funding that was signed into law earlier this week covers only half of what students were promised this year. I applaud the General Assembly and Governor for a strong first step, but it is critical that they now finish the job and pass a comprehensive balanced budget that allows us to keep our promises not only to students, but also to social service providers, schools, businesses and others that are serving taxpayers across our state.”

Insurance companies have taken advantage of loopholes in federal health care laws to not cover birth control medication, though the practice is supposed to be forbidden under certain circumstances, such as when the contraception is approved by the Federal Drug Administration. This bill was drafted to model the requirements of the federal Affordable Care Act. Proponents of the bill argue this legislation will help to clarify current laws regarding what types of contraception medications

are to be covered by insurance companies and to what degree of coverage.

“We need to make sure the insurance companies are following the law and that women have access to the same coverage in Illinois as they do in other states,” said Willis. “This bill is a common sense measure to provide some clarity and fairness to women.”

The legislation has cleared the House of Representatives and awaits further action in the Senate.

making things happen,” Cronin said. “It is making foundational changes that will begin to turn this ship around.

“This may seem like little stuff, but in DuPage County, we have already seen savings of $100 million.”

Illinois Comptroller Munger takes the floor “Illinois has not had a balanced budget in 15 years. We must have a budget. We are at the precipice and right now, we are being governed by the courts.”

Those were the opening words of Illinois State Comptroller Leslie Munger, who went on to give a very matterof-fact, albeit bleak picture of the state’s fiscal status.

“When the State is doing little toward solving its budget problems, then the courts have to step in and order payments to certain groups,” she said. “The problem is that sometimes, a judge may order payments without knowing whether or

not the state has the money to make them.”

The big bad numbers Munger dropped some pretty big numbers throughout her address: • $110 million goes in and out of the pension fund every day.

• Illinois has $7 billion in unpaid bills.

• Illinois owes $400 million just in fees and late charges.

• The courts have mandated payments for higher education, social services, drug and alcohol programs and respite care.

Illinois is on the hook to pay back $2 billion for those services.

“I realize it is hard to get your head around these numbers,” she said.

Last month, Munger decided to treat paychecks to elected officials just the same as all of its financial obligations – get in line!

“Now everyone is in the line,” she said. “Why should

officials be paid when those they serve are not?”

That comment brought a round of applause.

“We are barely keeping the doors open at places that serve our most vulnerable residents,” she continued.

Suggestions for a solution Munger offered suggestions to get the state back on track and in control of its finances again.

“First, we need to start solving the problem, not just the symptom,” she said. “We need to invest in getting people in this state back to work. We have so many assets here, transportation, farms, higher education institutions, there’s no reason not to work together toward a solution.”

Knowing the state must continually look for ways to make things faster, cheaper and better, Munger said she had reduced her staff by 20%, which saved $1 million in the first two months.

“All departments of government need to follow that lead,” she said.

Then she talked about economic growth, calling it “a total game changer.”

“That is the area that will allow us to grow the tax base, which will bring in more investment and more growth,” she said. “We need to put Illinois and our taxpayers first.”

She offered to help as much as possible.

“I can’t vote [in the legislature], but I have a megaphone,” Munger said, indicating she would keep fighting the good fight and making sure her voice is heard.

The program included a Business Leaders Roundtable, moderated by independent journalist Lisa Leiter.

The panelists were: Sean Chou, CEO, Catalytic; Mike Vivoda, Sr. VP and president, West Region, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare; and, Ray Ziganto, president of the manufacturer Bi-Link.

House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 36 would amend the state constitution to ensure that any tax revenue collected through the gas tax, which is supposed to be used solely for improving Illinois transportation systems, cannot be used for any other purpose. In the past, the General Assembly has taken the money that was supposed to be

used for transportation purposes and has used it for unrelated items. The measure is backed by organized labor and business organizations, citing the fact that important construction jobs would be protected under the measure.

“This measure is a win-win situation for business and labor, and will help to create jobs in our communities by maintaining and improving vital transportation infrastructure that we need in the O’Hare region,” Willis added.

Constitutional amendment could eliminate office of the Lieutenant Governor Issue passes House, moves to Senate

SPRINGFIELD — An effort being backed by State Rep. Kathleen Willis (D-Addison) to save Illinois taxpayers an estimated $1.6 million per year by eliminating the Office of the Lieutenant Governor passed the House of Representatives last week and is awaiting action in the Senate.

“We need to look for common sense solutions to save taxpayers’ money, and cutting unnecessary layers of state government is a good first step,” said Willis. “This measure will save money by cut-

ting out a political office that really does not show a whole lot for what it spends.”

House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 5 is co-sponsored by Willis.

The measure would ask the voters this fall whether they would like to eliminate the office of the Lieutenant Governor, which currently has an annual budget of approximately $1.6 million. The measure has passed the House with bi-partisan support and awaits consideration in the Senate.

As a candidate, Governor Rauner reportedly supported the idea of eliminating the office, but has since reversed course, despite the state’s dire financial situation.

“The state is in a financial crisis and we need to make sure we are being responsible with how tax dollars are being spent,” said Willis. “This measure will let the voters decide if they want to continue to fund a political office that has little benefit to taxpayers.”

Addison May 4 Richard Newell, 49, of Addison, was arrested in the 100 block of S. Villa at around 8:55 p.m. and charged with retail theft. Police said Newell attempted to return a stolen item on April 30. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was taken into custody on May 4, according to police.

May 3 Antonio Morante-Lopez, 18, of Addison, was arrested in the 600 block of N. Lincoln at around 8:28 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said Morante-

May 2 Hilario Avelar, 45, of Addison, was arrested in the 600 block of S. Yale Ave. at around 9:04 p.m. and charged with battery and resisting a police officer. Police said Avelar struck a police officer in the chest with his arm, and then pulled away from officers in an attempt to resist arrest.

Villa Park April 30 • Criminal damage to property was reported in the 300 block of N. Princeton at around 11:51 a.m. Police said the owner of a vehicle parked in the roadway returned to the vehicle and found the windshield was damaged.

• Armed robbery was reported at a local gas station at around 11:39 p.m. Police said an unknown male suspect armed with a knife entered the gas station and stole the cash register.

April 29 • Rachel M. Epstein, 23, of Villa Park, was arrested near Roosevelt and Ardmore at around 3:55 a.m. and charged with two counts of DUI, improper lane usage, speeding and no insurance.

• Colleen Ann Hallaway, 38, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 500 block of S. Wisconsin and charged with harassment by telephone, which allegedly occurred between 6 p.m.

Speaking of that we need to rake the lawn and weed the garden before the (graduation) party and we have to come up with centerpiece ideas for both events and we’ve yet to decide between cake or cupcakes (wedding) while cookies might be an option (graduation) and I’ve still got to choose a dress (for the wedding) not to mention a dress for the bride and bridesmaids and flower girls and so many other things that need to get

decided and get done.

Deep breath. Normally one big celebration is enough to keep me up at night. But two?

That’s enough to put a gal way over the edge.

Or not. Come on girl, get a grip.

I have two major life celebrations in the coming months.

How lucky can a person get? I realized yesterday I was perseverating on the tasks involved and ignoring the joy that I should be feeling about these upcoming events and that’s simply no way to celebrate.

At least not if you want to celebrate successfully – which I most assuredly do. What would be the point otherwise?

The days will come – and go. Someone might notice if all the napkins don’t match or if the cake leans slightly or if we run out of pulled pork, but I doubt it. And even

if something does go wrong (and it probably will) and someone actually notices (and they probably won’t), I doubt they’d care enough to even notice that they noticed.

Because when we celebrate, we don’t come to the party for the decorations or the games or the music or even the pulled pork. We come together to congratulate and wish the graduate or the bride and groom all best. Because we care. It’s as simple as that.

Anything beyond is just icing on the cake – or cupcake, depending on which way we decide to go.

Young IC Catholic Prep softball team improving Gonzalez, Lytton leading the way at the plate

The youthful IC Catholic Prep softball team is learning on the job.

The Knights were 9-11 overall and 2-6 in Metro Suburban Conference West Division play through late last week.

“We’re a young team,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Frank

Reaber. “We’re hitting the ball and scoring runs, but we’re still making a lot of errors. We have a long way to go, but we are working at it.”

At the plate, the Knights have been led by the likes of Melissa Gonzalez an Josie Lytton.

“Melissa and Josie have been hitting the ball really well,” said Reaber. “Melissa always hits third and Josie gets moved around in the order. They have been pretty consistent.”

The Knights continue to work hard on the defensive aspect of the game. “Defensively we always have a bad inning,

but that’s getting better,” said Reaber. “We beat Fenton 6-4 and they could have had a big inning. We held them and we hit the ball well.”

Georgia Mahnke also has been hitting well of late, along with Kaitlyn Falduto.

“We start three freshmen and two sophomores,” said Reaber. “They are going to keep improving. We’re moving kids around and seeing where we can play them.”

Freshman pitcher Kayla Faber-Cournane also is improving in the circle. “She’s a 14-year-old pitcher on the

varsity,” said Reaber. “She’s getting better.”

Reaber added IC Catholic Prep’s 9-11 record easily could be well into the above-.500 category.

“We gave away three games in the seventh inning and in probably six of our losses we had a lead going into the sixth inning,” he said. “We have one bad inning. It might be nerves from being such a young team.

We don’t know how to put teams away yet, but we will get there.”

IC Catholic Prep will host its annual tournament Friday

and Saturday. The tournament features Sterling, Morrison, Momence, Burlington Central, Chicago Christian, Aurora Christian and Hinsdale South.

“There are a lot of good teams,” said Reaber. “We don’t want to play any cupcakes. In our conference almost everybody is either Class 3A or 4A. We play a tough schedule and that only will make us better when we get to the Class 2A playoffs.”

IC Catholic Prep will host a regional this season. The Knights drew the No. 2 seed behind Elgin St. Edward.

that fun is a priority for my sweet mate.

We still adore each other, more than ever. Maybe it’s because of who we are as positive people or because with age comes wisdom or because it’s the second marriage, but we both choose to see the good in each other.

It might be human nature to find fault in others, but that’s just plain stupid. If you are going to

live with someone for the rest of your life, don’t you think you should focus on the good?

I don’t mind that I wipe the fridge door handles every day because they are sticky with something he has concocted.

The man cooks. The man makes the best cocktails ever. The man whips up creative desserts. I will gladly wipe up the sticky as long he keeps playing in the kitchen.

I love that my prince is the most patient man on the planet.

Nothing flaps this guy. His depth of understanding me surpasses my own understanding of me. All we women want is someone who gets us. This guy gets me.

He is thoughtful and generous and kind and full of surprises. He buys the best bling and on any

random day, I might find a card and gift left on the kitchen table stating “Happy Wednesday” or something left on my car seat just because. He likes to play music at dinner and light candles and pour wine. Every day is a special occasion. We use the “good” china for every day just because we like it.

Yeah, I dig him. I feel so safe with him and that is the most freeing thing. We talk about anything and everything. My favorite times are our deep discussions and our sillies.

As much as I like to think we’re special, we are not unique. There are countless love stories across the land, as it should be. If you do not adore your partner, or feel adored, don’t despair. Magic love is possible for all.

“I like to tell people to think of nutrition as fuel for the body; without the correct fuel, the engine and components can’t work correctly,” says Johnson. “The most critical nutrients that boomers don’t get enough of are supergreens and omega-3s. 4. Rev your engines daily

“The benefits of exercise are endless, but the underdog benefit is how it makes us feel and think,” says Johnson. “You should move your body if you want to stay sharp and happy.”

Find an exercise program you enjoy, he suggests. “Exercise is the fountain of youth, but you shouldn’t do something you don’t like. Make sure you move your body daily. If you are looking for suggestions, think about hiring a trainer to learn a set program. I think focusing on form and technique over intensity is the first step.”

5. Schedule regular maintenance checks

“Play offense instead of defense with your health,” says Johnson. “Modern medicine is better than ever at early detection and treatment.”

The key is to focus on prevention.

“Use annual doctor visits to screen, ask questions and monitor your risk factors.

Remember, you can only get good answers if you ask good questions,” he says.

Finally, Johnson reminds people that anti-aging doesn’t exist. “We are all aging - the key is to age well. This means to aspire to quality of life. We all have motivators in our life: kids, grandkids, spouses, careers, passions, etc. Without your health, none of these can be enjoyed to the fullest.”

Addison Trail baseball team showing competitive spirit Villasenor enjoying fine season on mound for Blazers

Even though the Addison Trail baseball team lost the annual District 88 series to Willowbrook, Blazers coach Michael Kennedy saw a major positive.

“I love the team’s resiliency,” he said. “They are able to bounce back from a tough game and they don’t let it hang on us. They are ready to battle the next game. We’ve responded from some tough games.

We’re 9-11 (through late last week) and we very easily could

have 13 wins. A play here and a play there could have changed things. We compete every play and every pitch. Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way or the other team gets a timely hit. The way the kids have responded and bounced back the next game has been great.”

In addition to being 9-11 overall through late last week, the Blazers were 4-8 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

In one of the Willowbrook games, the Blazers lost 2-0 after giving up two unearned runs. In an 11-5 loss, Addison Trail led 4-1 at one point before Willowbrook scored 10 runs in the sixth inning.

“For whatever reason in that game we couldn’t throw a strike and it snowballed,” said Kennedy. “We couldn’t stop the bleeding. By the time we

Despite the tough series, Kennedy again saw the seasonlong competitive spirit from his team.

“Our guys are out there and you can see they want to go out and win,” he said. “They aren’t satisfied with competing.

If they have great days at the plate and we still lose, they are not satisfied. They want the

team win.”

Individually, Addison Trail has been sparked throughout the season by the pitching of Nick Villasenor.

“Nick has been outstanding on the mound,” said Kennedy.

“He one-hit Downers Grove South and then threw the 2-0 game against Willowbrook with the two unearned runs.

In his last 14 innings he’s been unhittable. He’s been fantastic this season.”

Through late last week Villasenor had a 1.40 ERA and had 48 strikeouts in only 34 innings of work.

At the plate, Robert Baughman was hitting .378 through late last week.

“Robert is a senior who has really come on as of late,” said Kennedy. “He swings a great bat. He leads us in extra-base hits.”

Also excelling has been Angelo Feola, who was hitting .373 and was leading the team in hits through late last week.

“Angelo is playing real well,” said Kennedy.

Addison Trail was scheduled to wrap up its WSC Gold series with Leyden earlier this week.

“We are making strides,” said Kennedy. “Some days we go out there and get the win and other days we are a hit away.

We put ourselves in a position to win games. That’s where we are making the most strides.

We are becoming a better baseball team. But at the same time we want to win those games.

We will get to that point. We have a process and the kids trust the process. Come playoff time I think we can be a dangerous teams to where teams don’t want to play us, especially if our bats are there.”

Willowbrook’s Matt Pizur throws no-hitter Warriors improve to 9-5 in conference with 4-0 week

Willowbrook pitcher Matt Pizur had himself a heck of a week.

Pizur threw a no-hitter against Addison Trail and then came back five days later and threw a four-inning two-hitter against Proviso East.

In a 2-0 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win against District 88 neighbor Addison Trail, Pizur tossed a near perfect game. The only Addison Trail runner to reach base was via an error. Pizur struck out nine and walked none and threw 54 of his 78 pitches for strikes.

Willowbrook had five hits in the game and scored two unearned runs. Kyle Ferguson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Kyle Martyniuk went 1-for3 as did Pizur. Jon Kelso also was 1-for3 with a run scored. Alec Michaelson went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Willowbrook completed the threegame series sweep of Addison Trail with an 11-5 victory. Michaelson took the loss. Hines pitched 1 1/3 innings and fanned three in relief.

The Warriors then took the first two games of a three-game conference set with Proviso East.

In an 11-0 victory, Willowbrook led 9-0 after two innings and finished with six hits.

In a 15-1 win over Proviso East, Pizur picked up the win. He pitched four innings and allowed two hits. He fanned 12 and walked none and threw 54 of 65 pitches for strikes. Reitz pitched the final inning and struck out two.

Willowbrook led 8-0 after two innings and had nine hits. Geritano had a double

Addison Trail girls track team prepares for sectional Kroll a major bright spot for Blazers

The Addison Trail girls track team had to deal with some recent bad news.

Lynette Banuelos, a key component on the relay end for the Blazers, suffered a knee injury during the Lake Park invitational.

“Lynette was injured in the triple jump,” said Blazers coach Dave Pytko. “We’re not the same team with her injury as far as the relays go. She’s not running as fast as she was with the injury.”

But Pytko said his squad is pushing forward as it heads into Friday’s Class 3A sectional competition.

“The good news is we have a chance to probably still score and medal at sectionals,” he said. “That’s what we want out of the kids. If you are medal-

ing in our sectional, you are doing a great job.”

Lauren Kroll will be heading into the sectional on a high note. “She’s a little more than a half-second off qualifying time in the 100 hurdles and has the second-best hurdles time in the sectional,” said Pytko.

Kroll also has the best sectional time in the 100 and 200.

“The hurdles are a springboard to college because there are not a lot of elite hurdlers out there,” said Pytko. “She’s been outstanding this season.

She’s an outstanding runner and always has been. We’ve been working on her start and that’s really helped her. The sectional is going to be an exciting time for her.”

Klea Gjonaj has the sixthbest time in the sectional in the 100. “If she can take off about four-tenths of a second she has an opportunity to make it down to state as well,” said Pytko. “We’re optimistic and she’s optimistic. She knows that’s a lot of time to take off.

She has a good chance to score

and medal at the sectional.”

Pytko noted a big goal is for Kroll to advance to the finals in a running event at state, something that, according to IHSA records, has never occurred at the school. Three girls in the history of the program (Maribeth Hulina, Bobi Nelms and Sharon Rodenhauser) qualified for the finals in either the shot or discus.

Nelms won the 1981 Class AA discus state title.

“It would be nice to see her make the finals,” he said.

Badminton players compete in conference meet Blazers’ boys volleyball team defeats Wheaton North

The Addison Trail girls badminton team recently logged a pair of fourth place finishes at conference and sectionals.

The Blazers finished fourth at the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet. Individually, sophomore Kasia Czepiel won the No. 9 singles conference title, while sophomore Mary Grace Mutia took second at No. 2 singles.

Becky Falash and Mutia took second at No. 2 doubles.

After the conference meet Mutia was 21-4 at No. 2 singles, while junior Athena Kakolires was 15-8.

The Blazers also tied for fourth at the Hersey sectional. Falash (No. 1 singles) and Mutia (No. 2 singles) competed in the singles division, while Kakolires and Sabrina Majeed (No. 1 doubles) and the team of Sandra Cosio and Yuritzy Varela (No. 2 doubles) played in the doubles division.

Fenton badminton Fenton recently competed in the York sectional. The Bison were represented by Heena Amin (No. 1 singles) and Kendra Vargas (No. 2 singles) in the singles divi-

sion, while the team of Rimsha Naseer and Sheeza Anwar (No. 1 doubles) and Amanda Perry and Shafaq Chohan (No. 2 doubles) played in the doubles division.

Fenton finished sixth in the sectional.

“The girls have made tremendous strides throughout the season,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings.

Fenton finished the regular season with a 13-2 win over Golder College Prep.

Amin, Vargas, Perry, Amin, Naseer, Kelly Kuman, Angelica Trojan, Hanna Roucka, Teresa Sanchez, Iram Hameeduddin and Kelly Keane picked up wins. The Fenton junior-varsity team also scored a 13-2 win.

At the conference meet, Kuman and

“The girls competed well at conference,” said Hastings.

At the JV conference meet, Chohan finished second, while Gaby Sanchez was third. The doubles team of Kirby O’Donnell and Hayley Gills placed third.

Addison Trail boys volleyball The Addison Trail boys volleyball team registered a recent 25-18, 26-24 non-conference win against Wheaton North.

Jacob Grygo led the Blazers with 13 assists, five kills, three digs and one ace.

Kannon Nelms had four kills and two blocks, while Eric Lynch also had four kills. The win moved Addison Trail to 6-16 overall.

Addison Trail boys track team thrives at recent invitationals Blazers win Willowbrook meet

The big meet environment has suited the Addison Trail boys track team quite well this spring.

The Blazers recently won the Willowbrook invitational and also logged a pair of secondplace finishes at meets.

“Hopefully we are peaking at the right time as the most important meets of the year are upcoming,” said Addison Trail coach Bruce Kelsay.

Kelsay again pointed to the varied contributions up and down the lineup that have helped contribute to a successful season.

“The nice thing about this team is its depth, which allows us to have even performances across jumps, throws, sprints and long distance,” he said.

Addison Trail’s hurdles group has made a big splash this season. “Our hurdlers have shown tremendous improvement this year,” said Kelsay.

Kelsay noted junior Jordyn Carr-Jones, through late last week, was 0.5 seconds away from state-qualifying time in the hurdles, while freshmen James Carr and Austin Rohlf are scoring plenty of points at the sophomore level.

Injuries have affected the team’s relay division. “Relays have been inconsistent due to some injury issues, but we hope to be full strength by the conference and sectional meets,” said Kelsay.

Individually, Ryan Baig has

taken over 400 dash duties, in addition to running on the 400 and 1,600 relay teams. “Ryan has done a tremendous job,” said Kelsay.

Sophomore Luis Vargas also is making strides to where he is running the varsity 3,200 relay and 1,600 run events. “Luis has really improved in the distance events,” said Kelsay.

Chris Purdy has made strides in his quest for a state-qualifying mark in the long jump.

“Chris has jumped close to the state-qualifying distance of 22-1,” said Kelsay. “He jumped 21-3 and is capable of reaching the state distance.”

Addison Trail will compete in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet this week.

“This group as a whole is fun to coach and is very competitive,” said Kelsay.

Fenton girls track team gearing up for sectional meet Bison have excelled in many facets this season

Heading into last week’s Metro Suburban Conference meet, the Fenton girls track team had put together an impressive list of accomplishments.

In the outdoor season alone, Fenton won its own Bison invitational, won a quadrangular meet, took second at Leyden and placed third at Elk Grove.

That was in addition to earlier putting a halt to Glenbard South’s streak of five indoor conference titles in a row.

“The team has a good focus and a good mindset to set personal records,” said Fenton coach Frank Kekstadt. “We are competing well and we’re relatively healthy. We’ve scored some good points in the field events all year long and our relays have set the tone this year. They have been really exciting.”

One of those relays in particular, the 400, certainly qualifies as exciting. At the Bison invitational, the 400 relay team set a new school record at 50.2. That group includes Nina Bush, Sara Mason, Hanna Matuszewski

“We have good track athletes,” said Kekstadt.

Fenton also has been bolstered by the additions of freshmen Mackenzie Miller and Ashley Lira, who joined the team at the end of the indoor season.

“They are just starting to develop,” said Kekstadt. “Both are very talented and both contribute in big ways throughout the lineup.”

One of those athletes providing a jolt to the field events lineup is Maria Trentadue in the shot put.

“Maria has hit a 37-foot shot put this season, which is a lifetime best,” said Kekstadt.

“She’s provided a real big boost to the team.”

Kekstadt also lauded the team’s distance group. “We’re seeing the most improvement right now from our distance runners,” he said. “On both levels we’ve seen more than

40 personal records. Just about every girl there is hitting a lifetime PR. The distance has come on strong. That group is helping to create a very strong team as far as being completely balanced.”

Fenton heads to the Class 3A Lake Park sectional Friday.

“I’m very happy with the group,” he said. “Not only is this probably the best team I’ve had in nine years being the head coach, but it’s the best team in terms of being a team with great character. These girls are great. We have a lot of natural talent and the key is the talent has great character. We’re developing talent and they have the expectation of excellence. We don’t have a lot of rules here. It’s be here, be on time and strive for excellence. Everything is falling into place. All our coaches this season have really stepped it up.

“It’s hard not getting emotional about these girls. It’s a great team.”

Napoli and McMahon providing strong leadership

The Addison Trail softball team has a young roster and coach Mark Olson is seeing his squad gain important experience this spring.

The Blazers were 5-10 through late last week after losses to Hinsdale South and Willowbrook.

“Those are two solid programs,” said Olson. “It’s kind of been a baptism by fire for us.

The season has kind of gone like we expected, but the response

has been great and the effort always has been there. We are getting better and we’re working on mentally understanding the game in terms of when to do things. That is going to help us on the physical side. We’re making some mental mistakes that turn into physical mistakes and those add up.”

Olson loves the coachability factor of his group. “The girls are super-positive,” he said.

“They have been awesome.

I’ve never met a more coachable group. It’s a hard-working group of girls. We are going to start seeing the dividends pay off because of that. Right now we don’t have a ton of girls who have played a lot. Our pitcher and catcher are fresh-

men. We have young kids at key positions who are getting varsity experience. You can practice all you want, but you don’t gain that experience until you get into a game situation.

I’m very proud of how they have responded. We’re plugging away and getting better.”

Seniors Nicolette Napoli and Alyssa McMahon have provided strong leadership for the Blazers. “They are two seniors who bat second and third for us and give us a huge lift on the field with their leadership,” said Olson. “It’s been great to see their growth as threeyear varsity players. Those two have taken the team under their wings. They have been fantastic.”

Sophia Hopkins (catcher) and Ally Polhad (pitcher) are Olson’s freshmen battery.

“Sophia has been a wall behind home plate and is going to be a good one,” said Olson.

“Ali has done a good job pitching and is another bright spot.

She’s learning and has been gaining experience. She’s responded beyond her years.”

Olson said this year’s squad reminds him of his first group at Addison Trail. “We had one senior that year and we took our lumps a little bit,” he said.

“That group is the same as this group. It had a great work ethic and it paid off the next year.

These girls have responded this year. They are growing as players.”

Willowbrook’s Sousa qualifies for state gymnastics finals Chantos qualifies for state badminton tournament

Willowbrook sophomore boys gymnastics standout Adam Sousa is headed back to the state finals.

Sousa automatically qualified for state in every individual event and won the all-around competition at the recent Glenbard West sectional.

Sousa will compete in this weekend’s state finals meet at Palatine High School for a second year in a row.

Other at-large qualifiers were to be announced by the IHSA earlier this week.

Sousa won the all-around competition with a 53.8 score.

The 53.8 was the highest allaround score of any boys gymnast in the state at the five sectionals. The other all-around sectional championship scores were 53.25, 52.5, 51.95 and 51.9.

A 52.7 all-around score won the state title last year. Sousa finished fourth in the all-around at state last year with a 51.7.

At Glenbard West, Sousa won the pommel horse competition with a 9.25 score and also won the horizontal bar title

with an 8.85. Sousa was second on floor exercise at 9.45 and took second on rings at 8.55.

He also was second on vault at 9.35. Sousa finished fifth on parallel bars at 8.35.

WIllowbrook finished fourth as a team at the sectional with a 139.0.

Willowbrook badminton The Willowbrook girls badminton team placed third at the recent Hinsdale South sectional. The Warriors had seven points. Hinsdale South won the sectional with 17.5 points.

Wheaton-Warrenville South was second with 11.5 points.

Willowbrook junior Grace Chantos qualified for the state

tournament after finishing fourth in the singles division.

Chantos opened the sectional with a 21-13, 22-20 loss to a player from Wheaton-Warrenville South. She then came back to win 21-6, 21-17 in her next match and followed that up with a 21-5, 21-6 victory.

Chantos then defeated that same Wheaton-Warrenville South player 21-17, 17-21, 21-14 to earn her state bid and get into the third-place match.

Chantons lost 21-19, 21-19 in the third-place match.

Chantos will compete at this weekend’s IHSA state finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Willowbrook boys track team readying for conference meet Field events showing major improvements this season

The Willowbrook boys track team is preparing itself for the upcoming postseason.

The Warriors will participate in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet Fri-

day at Proviso West (hosted

by Proviso East). Willowbrook then heads the following Friday to the Class 3A WheatonWarrenville South sectional.

Willowbrook coach TJ Artman noted the team will not be at full strength at sectionals due to the school prom occurring at the same time.

“We are getting focused for the conference meet,” he said.

“For many of the seniors, it will be their last competitions.

We are looking forward to conference.”

In recent action, the Warriors took second at their own Willowbrook invitational that also included Addison Trail, Leyden and Fenton.

Artman has been pleased with the development of the team’s field events this season.

“Our jumping and throws have added a large amount of points to our team’s scores this year,” he said. “We have not had that

before. It’s great to get full team scoring. Missing the pole vault hurts our team scores very much and unfortunately we will never score in that event at any meet so we always are fighting being down points, including at the conference championships. Overall, the field events have fantastic coaching and are working extremely hard. They are focused to improve as individuals and add points to the team scores.”

Students learned about cross bracing, shear walls and cores, moats, base isolators, and other elements that could be used in

the design of a building. By the end of the project period, room 103 looked like a boom-

ing metropolis with buildings that could withstand severe shaking!
