Over the weekend, the Independent learned that 58-year-old Thomas Kokoraeleis, a convicted murderer and one-time resident of Villa Park, was released from Thomas the Illinois River Kokoraeleis Correction Center outside of Peoria on Friday, March 29. Kokoraeleis, a member of the notorious “Ripper Crew” gang, had been sentenced to 70 years in prison for the 1982 slaying of 21-year-old Lorraine “Lorry” Ann Borowski, an Elmhurst resident who worked for a local realtor. After disappearing in May of 1982, Borowski was discovered buried in a shallow grave near Clarendon Hills about five months later.

While initially sentenced to life in prison for slaying Borowski, Kokoraleis was offered by prosecutors to plead guilty in exchange for a 70-year term in prison, in lieu of the death penalty. Because prisoners can get day-for-day for good behavior,

Woman builds new life after series of surgeries restores vision Annie Pawlisz, 28, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1996 when she was 5 years old. By the time she was 22, she knew the condition increased her risk for a host of health problems, including heart disease, nerve damage and blindness.

Still, she wasn’t too worried in early June 2013 when her vision began to blur. Her then-boyfriend now-husband Kevin Pawlisz recommended she see an eye doctor.

“I just said ‘yeah, yeah,’ but when I went out to drive the short distance to work I almost went up on the curb,” Pawlisz recalled.

“I came back in and made an appointment for the next day with an optometrist. After he dilated and tested my eyes he referred me to an ophthalmologist, Dr. Weinberg.”

Aaron Weinberg, M.D. is a member of the Elmhurst Hospital medical staff and Retina Associates, a medical group started by ophthalmologist Kenneth Resnick, M.D., in 1991. The practice specializes in retinal and related disorders. The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye.

Pawlisz finished the surgeries and recovery periods with excellent results. She returned to work in March 2014.

“Annie now has the vision needed for independent living, including reading,” said Dr. Weinberg.

“With all the advances in diabetes care, such as the insulin pump, she’s able to more easily control her blood sugar levels.”

“Diabetic retinopathy patients who need surgery also benefit from today’s smaller-than-ever surgical tools that allow for more precise, safer and more tolerable surgeries,” said Dr. Reznick. “It’s important that diabetics get regular eye exams, especially since there aren’t always symptoms in the earliest phase of retinopathy. Treatment with one of the newer injectable medications or lasers can often help if the condition is caught early.”

Chambers working to offer Association Healthcare Plan With the remnants of the 2019 Patient Protections and Affordable Care Act (ACA) in jeopardy, the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry and fellow chamber members in the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce Executives (WSCCE) group are partnering with the Illinois Chamber of Commerce on the development of an Association Healthcare Plan (AHP) for businesses with one to 50 employees (including sole proprietors).

Some 20 WSCCE members have been doing preliminary work to create an AHP since President Donald Trump’s October 2017 Executive Order 13813 “Promoting Healthcare Choice and Competition Across the United States) instructing the U.S. Department of Labor to establish AHP guidelines per the Employee Retirement and Income Security Act of 1974.

Katie Maloney, Vice President of Health Policy at the United States Chamber of Commerce, made AHP presentations at the Illinois Chamber of Commerce’s Chamber Day in Springfield on March 20 and in 2018 at a WSCCE monthly luncheon meet-

ing.

At Chamber Day, Laurie Silvey, Associate Vice President and President of Center for Business Management at the Illinois Chamber, reported that the state chamber is forming a separate subsidiary for the sole purpose of administering an AHP and sent a Request For Proposals (RFP) to eight healthcare insurance providers with a submission deadline of April 18.

Some details of the Illinois Chamber’s RFP include: 1. This plan will encompass businesses from 1-50 employees, including sole proprietors.

2. All participating employers included in this plan must be a member of either ILCC or the local chamber federation formed for the purpose of administering this AHP. 3. The RFP includes request for offering fully insured medical insurance, as well as the possibility of packaging dental and/or vision insurance.

4. The more companies that participate in this plan with the ILCC, the better the rates we expect.

5. Depending on the results of the RFP, this may be a single carrier or

multiple carrier, with multiple plans available. We plan to work to build a strong network of providers.

Per the DOL’s new rule, AHPs can serve employers in a city, county, state or multi-state metropolitan area (or a particular industry nationwide) to provide more choice and more-affordable insurance for small businesses.

Customized to the needs of small businesses, AHPs are projected to reduce administrative costs and strengthen negotiating power from larger risk pools and greater economies of scale, according to the DOL. As with large company plans, consumer protections and healthcare anti-discrimination protections with apply.

The DOL’s Employee Benefits Security Administration will monitor the new AHPs to ensure compliance with the law and protect consumers, with state government sharing enforcement authority with the federal government.

According to the DOL, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates millions of employees will switch their coverage to more-affordable and more-flexible AHPs and

Foundation plans 14th annual Family Fun Fair The Addison School District 4 Educational Foundation for Excellence will be hosting its 14th annual Family Fun Fair at Indian Trail Junior High School, 222 N. March 24, the Independent learned that Kokoraleis had registered as a sex offender with the Aurora Police Department, a requirement of his parole. On his registration, he listed his residence as a Christian mission in Aurora, known as Wayside Cross Ministries. The Aurora Police Department released the following statement: “Kokoraleis came into the Aurora Police Department this morning [Sunday] and registered on the Illinois Sex Offender Registry. He was required to register by tomorrow morning so by registering today, he was in compliance.”

Over their history, four members of the “Ripper Crew,” including Kokoraeleis and his brother Andrew, had abducted, raped, tortured and killed at least 17 women in the Chicagoland area as part of a satanic cult. It was reported that the men

would cut off women’s breasts often while they were still alive. The name Ripper Crew came as a reference to Jack the Ripper, who the gang is reported to emulate.

Andrew Kokoraleis became the last person to be executed in the state of Illinois, just before then-Governor George Ryan declared a moratorium on the death penalty in the state. Two other members of the Ripper Crew, including ringleader Robin Gecht, remain incarcerated.

Gecht was an electrical contractor and handyman who once worked with John Wayne Gacy, reports said.

Gecht was the only member of the Ripper Crew who never confessed to any of the crimes.

Attempts to extend incarceration fail Attorneys worked hard to classify Kokoraleis as a sexually-violent person who is a danger to society in order to keep him in prison. Doc-

tors who examined Kokoraleis told prison officials it was “unlikely” he would offend again.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin released a statement saying that he had worked with the Attorney General’s office to keep Kokoraleis from re-entering society.

“Mr. Kokoraleis was evaluated by extremely experienced psychologists and a psychiatrist who found he did not meet the necessary criteria – having a mental disorder that makes him violent and being highly likely to commit future acts of sexual violence – that would enable us to bring a petition to find him sexually violent under state law,” Berlin said.

The victim’s family responds An alert from Illinois’ victim notification system was issued Friday, March 29 to announced Kokoraleis had been discharged from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

While the family of Lorry Borowski

is disappointed, they are accepting that his release is inevitable.

“We’ve exhausted everything,” Lorry’s brother Mark was quoted as saying. “There’s nothing else we can do. We fought as hard as we could. I cannot even imagine someone like this could get out.”

Borowski’s mother Lorraine is now 83 and says she never thought she’d see the day Kokoraleis would be released.

“I thought he’d be in prison until I died,” she said.

Lorry Ann Borowski was laid to rest in Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.

Sharing the concern that Kokoraleis could return to the area was Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth.

“Human beings are creatures of habit,” he said. “If you were incarcerated for 35 years, where would you go? You go back to your old neighborhood to what you’re familiar with.”

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has certified Illinois as fully compliant with the REAL ID Act. The REAL ID Act is a federal mandate by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that sets standards for state-issued DL/IDs by making identity documents more secure to combat fraud and identity theft.

REAL ID cards meet security requirements set by the federal government and will have a gold star marking in the top right corner. Newly-issued standard DL/IDs that do not comply with requirements of the federal REAL ID Act will be marked with the phrase “Federal Limits Apply,” as called for by the federal law.

Based on federal guidelines, to obtain an Illinois REAL ID card, all applicants – including those who currently hold a standard Illinois DL/ID – must provide: •One document proving identity

College’s Recycling Extravaganza, without electronics, to be held April 13 On Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Elmhurst College will host its annual Recycling Extravaganza, a place to bring a variety of items that can be recycled, reused and kept out of landfills.

NOTE: Because the City of Elmhurst now offers quarterly electronics recycling, the College event will not collect electronics this year.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that Illinoisans now have the opportunity to apply for a REAL ID card. A REAL ID is a new type of Illinois driver’s license or ID card that meets federal guidelines allowing the holder to board airplanes for domestic travel or to enter secure federal facilities beginning Oct. 1, 2020.

The federal government requires REAL ID applicants to provide additional documents to obtain the card.

Illinois residents are not required to obtain the new card and can rather choose to keep their current standard driver’s license or ID and use a valid passport to board domestic flights after Oct. 1, 2020.

There is no immediate need to apply for a REAL ID card because current Illinois driver’s licenses or ID cards will be accepted for domestic air travel or to enter secure federal facilities until Oct. 1, 2020. A valid U.S. passport is an acceptable alternative to a REAL ID card.

The application process for a REAL ID card takes longer at the facility than a standard DL/ID application since more documents are required by the federal government. As a result, the public is asked to please be patient while visiting Driver Services facilities.

Cullerton comments on auditor general findings State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) released the following statement in response to the Performance Audit of the Legionnaires disease at the Quincy Veterans’ Home released by the auditor general on Monday, March 25: “The Auditor General’s report confirms what we already knew: Former Gov. Rauner and his administration failed our veterans and their loved ones.

“The previous administration spent their time and energy covering up their lies and failures, instead of working with the General Assembly to implement solutions that would have protected the health and well-being of our veterans, their loved ones and staff at the

Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy.

“Every level of the former administration was focused on hiding their inept response to the Legionnaires’ crisis in Illinois. It is inexcusable and sickening that they were more worried about concealing their lies to the General Assembly than saving the lives of our nation’s heroes.”

Cullerton passed Senate Resolution 1186 on Feb. 15, 2018, which directed the auditor general to conduct a performance audit of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ management of the Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks at the Quincy Veterans’ Home.

Cullerton pushes to ease medical visits for disabled individuals Having blood drawn can be a very anxious thing for a child with autism.

Thanks to Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), medical professionals may soon have access to training to help ensure individuals and developmental disabilities are as comfortable as possible.

Cullerton advanced Senate Bill 1214 on Tuesday, which requires the Department of Public Health to ensure that those who draw blood have the most current method of drawing blood from individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities available.

“Health care professionals strive to provide the best possible care to all patients,” Cullerton said. “This measure ensures that they receive training on the best practices to draw blood from patients that are living with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as Autism and Down’s syndrome have a good med-

ical experience.”

The Department of Public Health will be required to compile current methods of drawing blood from children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Senate Bill 1214 was an initiative of Michael Baker, a parent advocate of a young adult son with a developmental disability.

“Medical visits can be stressful for all of us, but especially for individuals who can often face extra challenges,” Cullerton said. “We need to ensure that communication and sensory issues are taken into account when medical professionals perform procedures such as blood draws.”

Senate Bill 1214 passed the Senate’s Committee on Public Health with bipartisan support and will move to the full Senate for consideration.

I saw someone familiar at the store today. I knew that I knew her or at least that I’d had cause to interact with her on several or perhaps a few occasions.

Problem is, I couldn’t pinpoint exactly which occasions. I was at the grocery store and she wasn’t a person from the grocery store. I hadn’t seen her there before. She definitely didn’t live at the grocery store, much less work there. I was 100 percent positive of that conclusion.

Still I wasn’t sure, exactly, how well I knew her or from where. Were our kids on the same team? Was she someone from my recent past or more distant and long ago? Was I better acquainted with her husband and perhaps acquainted with her via osmosis? Were we on first name terms? Did I know her from work?

Who the H-E double toothpicks was she?

This wasn’t the first time I’ve encountered this type of situation – seeing someone you know you know but you don’t know from where because they are out of place.

I’m sure no one reading this can in any way relate. But I hope so.

Perhaps I’ve even been out of place myself at some times. I wouldn’t know, but it’s probable –

In my opinion

Age is a funny thing I don’t think about it much, but today age is on my mind. I’m reading an article that states “once you turn 55 you start to enter the senior age demographic.” Part of me feels like I’m still a college senior, not a senior citizen.

“Senior age demographic?” Wow. My Prince and I achieve that magic number 55 this fall. It’s still months away, (Sept. 29, mark your calendar, send me a card), but that age triggers me.

I already have an AARP card, and my hair has been gray for a couple years now, but no one has yet to offer me a senior citizen discount. It could be because I don’t go to fast food joints, but I’ll take it. Save a dollar because I’m old? SURE! As I ride out the last months of 54, I realize I’m no longer the primary target age of advertising demographics. There’s less media pressure to buy things I don’t need.

And yet we over-50s spend plenty, on all kinds of stuff. (Bird seed, for example.)

We don’t go out clubbing (the bands are too loud)(yes, I said it) (#tooloudmeanstooold). We do buy plenty of wine to enjoy at home, while we play Scrabble with friends (#wildandcrazy, #stripscrabble, #justkidding).

Contemplating 55 means accepting I’m past the half-way point of my life. (I plan to exit at age 108.) Time is ticking loudly. (Maybe that’s a good thing, I don’t hear as well as I used to.) I told my hubby that if there’s things he still wants to pursue, he’s only got 40 good years left (the last decade may be creaky). Do it now because the years evaporate quicker than…something that evaporates really quickly. (#oldagebrainfog).

This article on seniorliving.org says “Senior citizens are also known as elderly persons. A senior citizen is a social demographic based on age.

Someone who is 35, for example, cannot be a senior.”

Not a well-written article for sure, (#crankyoldeditor), but an “elderly person”? Me? Zoinks! (#scoobydooreference, #whippersnappers).

Scooby Doo, and young enough to interject witty hashtag commentary (#kellyissocool), do not take on the “elderly person” moniker.

We in our 50s are still ripening.

We most certainly are not in what is called the “declining years.” We are in our reclining on the deck years.

Our refining our poetry years. Our fine dining years. Our outshining our youth years. Our moonshining, sun shining, ziplining years.

The article states “a senior citizen is slowing down in their life.” Maybe they/we are working less (#woohoo, #hellyes, #lifeintheslowlane), but slowing down is in the eye of the beholder.

Smelling the proverbial roses? Yes, indeed. Taking in their beauty, yes.

Appreciating more, absolutely. If that is slowing down, I suggest we all do at any age.

There are many perks to aging, and in fact, I feel perkier already.

But if I kick the bucket right now, I’m happy. I’ve had a wonderful life and have no unfulfilled longings.

There is plenty I still want to see and do, and that is the plan. My Prince and I will be off exploring.

Maybe I’ll start practicing now, asking for the senior citizen discount (#cheapskate). I just read some airlines give travel discounts (#forreal?, #dontbelieveit). I like to road trip too. Are there gas discounts?

This time of life, being a senior, feels like a college senior again.

The future is wide before me, the open road, unlimited possibilities.

My travel companion (#zenman, #angelboy, #everythingman) is the best I could ever hope for. Senior age demographic, here we come! #buymecake!

House passes bill requiring more disclosure in municipal pensions Cullerton-sponsored bill requires disclosure when accumulated sick leave is used to bump up pension payments

Local government pension systems may soon have to start disclosing more information about how certain lump-sum payouts at the end of an employee’s career are used to increase that person’s retirement benefits.

In 2016, the General Assembly passed a law known as the Local Government Wage Increase Transparency Act, which requires disclosure of certain large lump-sum payments such as severance packages and unused vacation. Often, those payments have the effect of boosting an employee’s

final average salary, which is used to calculate benefits.

Now, the Illinois House has passed a bill that adds lump-sum payments for accumulated sick days to the list of items that the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund must disclose.

The bill would require disclosure of only those payments and would not prohibit the practice of cashing in unused sick leave when an employee retires. The bill also would apply only to non-union employees in that system.

“We need to make sure we are capturing all of these possible pension boosts by requiring sick days to be

included in the disclosure process,” Rep. David McSweeney, a Barrington Hills Republican and a lead sponsor of the bill, said in a statement.

Although IMRF is the best funded pension system of all the public employee pension plans in Illinois, local government officials have told state lawmakers they struggle to keep up with their mandatory contributions into that fund.

The legislation is House Bill 303, which passed the House unanimously on Wednesday, March. 20. It is now pending in the Senate, where Democratic Sen. Tom Cullerton of Villa Park is the chief sponsor.

State Police: Too often, drivers aren’t slowing or moving for squad cars Fourteen stopped police cars hit so far in 2019, including one fatality

Already in 2019, motorists have hit 14 squad cars stopped along Illinois roads. One of those incidents cost an Illinois State Police trooper his life.

“This information is obviously extremely concerning,” acting ISP Director Brendan Kelly said March 26 during a news conference at the capitol in Springfield. “While only one of these impacts resulted in a fatality, that is one too many.”

In January, trooper Christopher Lambert was struck and killed along Interstate 294 near Northbrook while he was assisting at an accident scene.

It’s the worst-case scenario among incidents occurring more often, Kelly said, despite a law that requires motorists to move over and slow down for emergency vehicles that are stopped and have their hazard lights flashing.

Scott’s Law was passed in Illinois in 2002. In 2013, the law was extended to apply to other vehicles, including ambulances and tow trucks.

Kelly said so far in 2019 there have been 494 recorded violations of the law, compared to 184 during the same period last year.

This year’s 14 collisions, occurring statewide at a rate of more than 1 per week, are already more than the yearly totals for 2016 (5), 2017 (12), and 2018 (8).

Kelly blamed the increase on distracted and impaired driving.

“The amount of distracted driving out there is something everybody is sensitive to,” Kelly said. “And it’s increasing, at least anecdotally, from talking to our colleagues across the country.”

As he spoke during the news conference, Kelly was flanked by photos of recent collisions, mangled squad cars hit by distracted or impaired

drivers, which Kelly said have resulted in injuries ranging from concussions, lacerations and muscle tears, to ruptured and bulged discs, compound bone fractures—and a death.

It was the ISP’s second stop on a three-day trip across the state to remind people of the law.

Kelly and other officers held a news conference March 25 in Chicago with Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who described the anguishing call he made to Lambert’s family in January, notifying them of the accident.

On March 26, Kelly referenced a plan to increase Scott’s Law enforcement by allocating an extra 2,000 man hours and using “some new and creative techniques” devoted to catch drivers breaking the law.

“If you see a squad car with warning lights on, don’t assume it’s a lone trooper just doing a regular traffic stop,” Kelly said.

“You could have eyes, video, and other instrumentation all around you as part of a special Scott’s Law detail.”

Asked to elaborate on the new tactics, which will be paid for with ISP’s existing funds, Kelly said he was “not going to spell it out right here.”

The 14th recorded collision with a parked squad car occurred March 20, when a state trooper and his parked squad car were hit by a semitrailer along Interstate 55 in Collinsville.

The officer was outside his car when the crash occurred, and suffered serious injuries. The squad car was demolished.

“If you see an emergency vehicle with their lights activated,” Kelly said, “please slow down and move over. It’s the right and safe thing to do, but failure to do so could also result in prosecution.”

Those who violate Scott’s Law face fines from $100 to $10,000 and a possible loss of a driver’s license.

The law is named after Chicago Fire Department Lt. Scott Gillen, who was struck and killed while assisting at a crash scene on a Chicago expressway in December 2000.

As the Democratic-controlled state Legislature mulls a constitutional amendment to change the state’s income tax structure, Republicans in the Illinois Senate are touting a plan to require a two-thirds vote to propose or raise any new taxes in the state.

Per state Sen. Dan McConchie’s plan, any proposal to raise taxes would require a greater supermajority—two-thirds of legislators—than the three-fifths needed to put a constitutional amendment question on the ballot. McConchie said the twothirds threshold is the same to expel a member or convict on impeachment.

“We are tying it to the exact same standards that are in place in California and Wisconsin,” he said, adding that 14 states require some type of supermajority vote on taxes.

Republican, introduced Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 12 at a Capitol news conference with fellow Republicans which lasted about six minutes on March 26. He called the effort one to “protect middle-class residents by giving them a voice in safeguarding their hard-earned money.”

McConchie said the amendment would apply to any tax proposal, income or otherwise.

To become law, McConchie’s SJRCA 12 would require approval from three-fifths of both the House and Senate, as well as approval from voters on a statewide ballot. Currently, Republicans control less than onethird of the seats in the state Senate and just more than one-third in the House.

Addison Trail girls track team enjoys indoor successes All-conference performers Sanfilippo and O’Connell return for Blazers

The Addison Trail girls’track team took many positives out of the recent indoor season.

The Blazers finished fourth at both the varsity and frosh-soph levels at the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meets.

“We placed fourth at both levels without our jumpers who were injured,” coach Dave Pytko noted.

Even better, the Blazers broke five team indoor records at the conference meet.

At one point during the indoor season, Viviana Sanfilippo was ranked in the top 20 in the state in the 800 after taking second in the event at the conference meet.

Alex Nava was second in the 300 and broke the team indoor record.

The Addison Trail 3,200 relay team of Sanfilippo, Julianna Tamayo, Lizbeth Balbuena and Nileena Mahesh also broke the team indoor record it set earlier in the year and did so by 30 seconds.

Willowbrook boys tennis team looking for more success Captains Cavka, Lobdell and DelValle return for Warriors

The Willowbrook boys tennis team had plenty to write home about last season.

The Warriors went 10-5 in dual matches and finished third in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 4-2 mark.

Willowbrook also had five all-conference players a year ago and won the District 88 eight-team tournament.

Coach Ed Delacruz returns three players who will serve as captains this spring. Back is junior Ben Cavka, who posted 17 wins last year and is slated to play No. 1 singles.

Senior Mark Lobdell is back after winning 16 matches last year. He will play a combination of No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. “Mark is our best all-around player who can play singles and doubles,” Delacruz noted.

Lobdell will play at College of DuPage next season.

Also back is two-year captain and senior Drake DelValle. He played No. 1 singles last year and recorded 12 wins. He is slotted for a combination of No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Delacruz noted DelValle is drawing college interest and currently is deciding whether to play in college or focus on academics.

Senior Joe Garner also returns. “We call Joe the human backboard,” said Delacruz. “He just doesn’t miss finishes off our third singles spot.

These guys are very talented and make our team so much deeper.”

Cavka took second at No. 2 singles in the conference, while Garner was third at No. 3 singles. Both earned all-conference honors.

Key newcomers include freshmen Jose Alcantara and Devin Cullerton. They will see action at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles this season.

“We are very senior-oriented,” said Delacruz. “This is probably one of the deepest if not the deepest team I’ve had in my 10 years at Willowbrook. We are very talented at first through third singles. We have four players there who we can rotate around. This allows me to really focus on our doubles play where players might not have that USTA player talent, but who really give me their all in practice.”

Willowbrook started the season with a win against RiversideBrookfield in non-conference action.

The Warriors will host their annual District 88 tournament on April 21.

“We won it last year and are trying to repeat,” said Delacruz of the District 88 event. “In the month of April we are loaded with matches so staying injury-free is a must.”

Delacruz said the team also has a longer-range goal this spring.

“Yes, we will try and make a run for conference this year,” he said. “it’s a goal we set out for at the start of the season.”

The Addison Trail 1,600 relay team of Sanfilippo, Tamayo, Balbuena and Nava took second in the conference and broke the team indoor record.

Maddie Ford broke the frosh-soph 3,200 indoor team record and took second in conference, while Mia Johnson won the hurdles race at the conference meet.

Sanfilippo, a sophomore, is the team’s top returner. Pytko noted she’s about 2.5 seconds off the state-qualifying mark in the 800 with seven weeks still to go. “She’s our anchor in the 3,200 and 1,600 relays and is able to run any event from 400 to 3,200,” he said. “She is on pace to hold every varsity distance record by season’s end.”

Balbuena and Tamayo also return.

“Lizbeth and Julianna have supplied great strength and leadership to the team,” said Pytko.

Nava, a senior, is the remaining sprinter from the 400 relay team that qualified for state two years ago.

Nava, along with junior Kate Diego and sophomore Francesca Scarabaggio, will provide some relay firepower. “We look to regain some of the thunder from a few years ago in our relays,” said Pytko. “Our relays are shaping up pretty well. We really need one person to step up for each relay and we could see them all become all-conference and become

sectional medalists. Each relay had a very good showing in the (indoor) conference meet.”

Johnson, a sophomore, and junior Julia Swierzb anchor the hurdling crew. “Mia was the second-fastest hurdler in the conference last year as a freshman,” said Pytko.

Pytko is looking for big things from junior Paulina Stachura in the high jump and Maggie O’Connell in the throws. “Paulina is looking to get closer to the state-qualifying height in the high jump and Maggie is poised to regain all-conference in the throws again this year,” the coach said.

Mahesh and Ford, both freshmen, are key newcomers to the

group and compete in the mid- and long-distance events. Freshman Sarah Bojczuk also will contribute in the jumps.

“Our strength in our team this year is definitely our senior leadership,” said Pytko. “They are very demanding, but very positive to everyone. They basically have set the bar for our team, the coaches have not. In addition, our distance crew is the strongest Addison Trail has ever seen. We look forward to all the distance records being broken this year. Finally, this is one of the most complete teams I have coached since being at Addison Trail. We have strengths all over in every type of event. The question is how much can we improve from where we are at to achieve our goals? We have potential all over the team. We just need to stay focused on what we can control.”

Pytko said this year’s group isn’t getting too far ahead of itself. “Our team looks to build from one meet to the next and not look too far ahead without keeping in our mind our ultimate goals of making a good showing at sectionals and having state aspirations,” he said. “We do a good job of competing in certain events with the best in our conference with Downers Grove South. We just need to build a culture of hard work pays off.”

Lozada headlines list of key returners for Fenton softball Bison looking to take next steps forward this spring

The Fenton softball team isn’t lacking for players who racked up plenty of varsity statistics a year ago.

And headlining that list is senior shortstop Isa Lozada, who hit .422 with 10 doubles, two triples, five homers, 29 RBI and scored 48 runs.

Lozada was an all-conference, all-area and third-team all-state selection last year.

Also back is senior third baseman/ second baseman Payton Pugliese, who hit .333 with 20 runs scored and 16 RBI last year. Sophomore pitcher-third baseman Claira Panos hit .379 with 19 runs scored and 18 RBI, while sophomore second baseman-pitcher Cynthia Ibarra hit .441 with three doubles, two triples, 19 runs scored and 22 RBI. Junior first baseman, designated player Joni Lucas hit .371 with five doubles, two triples, four homers, 26 RBI and 20 runs scored.

Freshman Ximena Banuelos will catch and also play a variety of dif-

ferent positions.

Coach Dave Mello has seen progress on both sides of the ball in the early going thus far. “The offense is coming along nicely,” he said. “We really like the way they are swinging the bats and we are very impressed with the aggressive nature with which they are running the bases. On defense, we look good, but there will be a lot of work to do once we are consistently on a dirt infield. We also will need to keep improving our relays and specials.”

Mello also is impressed with the team’s pitching depth. “The pitching is in great hands to start the season,” he said. “We will be rotating four girls, junior Gianna Mendoza, and sophomores Claira Panos, Cynthia Ibarra and Ashley Mitchell. All of them have looked really good in the early portion of the season. Pitching is our top strength at this point in the season. Not far behind would be our defense. We feel really good about both. We really like our offense as well, but need to see it against some other top pitching.”

Mello noted Ashley Milano and Madison Spencer provide the team with an opportunity to incorporate slap hitting into the offense. “They

bring great speed and also will shut down two-thirds of the outfield,” he said. “Both have been working extremely hard.”

Mello added his team is loaded with returning players from last year’s squad that won 14 games.

“What we really like the most about this team is that other than Ximena, they all were on the varsity last season and are very hungry to have a really good season,” he said. “A lot of them played travel ball and have put in a lot of time to have success.

On top of that, there are only three seniors so just about all of them will be back for another run next season.”

Mello isn’t placing a specific numerical value on wins or conference finish. “Our goals for this season are to grow each day and focus on what is right in front of us,” he said. “We aren’t going to worry about anything except what is taking place at that moment. We really feel that we have a great chance to win a lot of games, but the most important thing is that we are fully prepared for regionals.

As for the conference race, this is our first time in this division of the Metro Suburban (Red Division). We would like to think that we will be a factor in the race.”

Willowbrook girls soccer team scores wins at Reavis tournament Warriors’ roster filled with talent at all grade levels

The Willowbrook girls soccer team had some recent success at the Reavis tournament.

Willowbrook opened play with a 3-2 loss.

Lizzy Florey had both goals for the Warriors.

However, Willowbrook came right back and scored a 3-0 win in its second game. Florey, Erin Fitzgibbon and Erinn Bell each had a goal.

The Warriors then downed Thornwood 6-0. Florey scored two goals, while Grace Tumilty, Julianna Paulsen, Fitzgibbon and Bell each scored a goal. Willowbrook also downed Leyden in the tournament.

Coach Julio Del Real has five freshmen up on the varsity, including Erin Fitzgibbon, Rachel Klamecki, Brooke Vandergrift, Izzy Manning and Allie Vittorio.

“We have five freshmen up on varsity who should be great contributors,” said Del Real.

Thus far, Del Real has been pleased with the team’s preparation heading into the spring season. “The team has been working very hard during practices,” he said. “They are grasping the team concept very well and are coming together very nicely. We look for great things to be accomplished if we continue with this type of attitude and

improvement.”

Defense, the coach noted, will continue to be a point of emphasis. “The way that this team moves the ball around on both sides of the field puts us in a situation where we have not allowed as many shots on goal as in the past,” said Del Real. “We continue to emphasize that our defense will be our offense, and by putting pressure on the opposition as soon as they get the ball, we have been able to create more offensive opportunities.”

Senior Ditza Montesinos is in goal this season after Willowbrook’s previous starter graduated early. “This enabled Ditza to step up and take over the position,” Del Real said. “She has taken the responsibility very seriously and has improved and continues to do so as the days go by. She had two shutouts out of the first three games we’ve

played.”

Del Real also enjoys the team-first atmosphere. “I love that they have adapted very well to each other and that they are very concerned about the team,” he said. “They are willing to do their part to take care of the team and all of the members on it. They are quick learners and have grasped the coaches’ concepts very well.”

Del Real said in order for his squad to be successful it must “continue to strive to do our best every day and to continue to move the ball as well and as quickly as possible,” The coach added, “We must always be a team and attempt to challenge as many shots as we can. We are looking to improve every day and to become better than the previous day. We hope to improve our conference standing from last year and to compete with the hard teams on our schedule.”

Local governments want in on tax revenue from online sales CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

A U.S. Supreme Court decision last year allows states to collect sales taxes from online retailers, even if they don’t have a physical presence in the state.

Now, Illinois cities and counties want in on that action, too.

“We just want to make sure that we can capture locally-imposed sales taxes on out-of-state retailers online,” said Brad Cole, executive director of the Illinois Municipal League, which represents more than 1,200 local communities throughout the state.

Cole recently answered questions from members of the House Revenue and Finance Committee about how that might be accomplished. The short answer? Not easily. “ … A lot of different organizations, entities and interests need to be aligned to get this right, and … I’m not prepared to say that we have that ready today,” Cole said.

The court’s decision last June in South Dakota v. Wayfair paved the way for states to collect sales taxes from online retailers like Amazon.

In Illinois, “remote” online retailers that have more than $100,000 in online sales in the state, or at least 200 discrete transactions, must collect the state’s 6.25 percent use tax.

Last year, the Illinois Department of

Revenue estimated the change, which went into effect Oct. 1, could bring in more than $200 million of new revenue every year.

Local governments like cities and counties also collect sales taxes on top of the state sales tax. Cole and other advocates say local governments should also be allowed to collect sales taxes from online retailers. That, they say, would level the playing field for local brick-and-mortar retailers, who already must add a local tax on sales.

But opponents say trying to impose and collect local sales taxes on online purchases would be overly complicated.

“Municipalities collecting their own sales taxes would be a hideous administrative nightmare,” said Rob Carr, president of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association. “I find it difficult to believe that a local municipality could either afford their own department of revenue or the hiring of a third party to do that for them.”

Yet some local entities, such as northeast Illinois’ Pace busing division, will soon rely on that extra revenue to maintain operations.

“We’re not capturing those outof-state taxes,” said Rocky Donahue, executive director of Pace, which was created in 1984 with the revenue of a regional sales tax. “And it’s really hurt-

Budget analysts: Evidence-based school funding model working, needs more funding

Illinois’ new evidence-based school funding model is effectively driving added funding to the state’s neediest school districts, but the state must double its annual added investment in the formula if districts are to reach funding adequacy in a timely manner, according to a report released March 27 by the bipartisan Center for Tax and Budget Accountability.

The evidence-based model was passed in 2017, giving each public school district an adequacy target based on several factors tied to student performance. Those furthest from their target are prioritized when new funds are added to the formula.

Illinois has 707 districts that do not meet their adequacy target, and CTBA President Ralph Martire said if the statutory minimum of $350 million is added to the formula each year, the earliest all districts could meet adequacy levels is 2050.

“That leaves generations of students in underfunded schools,” Martire said.

For the state to make up a $7.35 billion education funding shortfall and meet adequacy levels within 10 years as specified in the legislation, Martire said, the actual annual funding increase would have to be closer to $779 million.

One option, suggested by committee member Rep. Joe Sosnowski (R-Rockford), would be to create a state tax specifically for remote online retailers. The revenue would be dispersed to local governments based on an established formula.

That way, Sosnowski said, the state wouldn’t have to deal with administering “a thousand different tax rates.”

At least one municipality, the City of Chicago, already applies an extra 1 percent tax to remote online retailers, on top of the state’s 6.25 percent.

If extended to other municipalities,

that 1 percent sales tax alone, according to GOP Rep. Ryan Spain (R-Peoria), could bring significant money to the state.

“We want to help close the gap for lost revenues from online purchases compared to purchases from a local retailer,” said Spain, who is sponsoring a bill to extend the 1 percent online use tax to all home-rule municipalities regardless of population size.

Spain added that Peoria alone could see $2 million to $3 million in new revenue every year.

Carr, of the Retail Merchants Association, said he understands the pres-

sure to include a solution in the next fiscal year’s budget, but it’s an issue that “has to go very, very carefully,” because the Supreme Court’s vote was 5-4, and it’s not clear how similar future cases will be decided.

But the committee chair, Democratic Rep. Michael Zalewski, of Riverside, said he feels “an abundant pressure” to solve the issue in the upcoming budget, because lawmakers “want to see local governments get their fair share.”

According to Cole, of the Municipal League, Illinois would be the first state to fully address local government sales taxes applied to online retailers.

Children of the Holocaust: Kindertransport Stories

College’s Annual Service of Remembrance set for April 28

Uri Berliner, a senior business editor at National Public Radio, recently revealed the moving story of how his father escaped the Nazis when his parents put him on a Kindertransport train to Sweden.

Berliner and Holocaust survivor Esther Starobin will talk about the Kindertransport, which enabled 10,000 children to escape the Nazis, when they present Children of the Holocaust: Kindertransport Stories, part of this year’s Holocaust Service of Remembrance and Lecture at Elmhurst College.

Berliner told the story of his father Gert in “A Toy Monkey That Escaped Nazi Germany and Reunited a Family,” which aired in November 2018 on the NPR program All Things Considered. A volunteer at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Starobin was only a toddler when she

was sent to England in 1939 on a Kindertransport. Berliner’s parents and Starobin’s parents all died at Auschwitz.

The 29th Annual Holocaust Service of Remembrance and Lecture will be held on Sunday, April 28, at 7 p.m. in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College. Admission is free and the public is invited. Please RSVP at elmhurst.edu/cultural or call (630) 617-5186.

Theatre department to perform Kindertransport play For more on the topic, Elmhurst College Theatre will present the play Kindertransport, by Diana Samuels, directed by Associate Theatre Professor Janice Pohl.

Following Kristallnacht in November 1938, the Movement for

the Care of Children from Germany was formed. In nine months almost 10,000 unaccompanied children were sent to Britain, most of them Jewish.

Samuels interviewed adults who, as children, fled the Nazis on the Kindertransports, weaving their experiences of loss, guilt and discovery into the play. “What is the cost of survival?” asks the author’s note.

“What future grows out of a traumatized past?”

Performances will be held in the Mill Theatre on the campus of Elmhurst College on the following dates: Thursday thru Saturday, April 2527; and Thursday–Sunday, May 2-5.

Elmhurst Art Museum debuts two spring exhibitions With a Capital P group exhibition; Luftwerk: Parallel Perspectives visually transforms McCormick House This spring, the Elmhurst Art Museum is set to debut two new exhibitions. First, With a Capital P: Selections by Six Painters is an exhibition curated by six prominent local painters that reveals myriad sensibilities of more than 45 peer artists based in the Midwest and beyond. The second exhibit, Luftwerk: Parallel Perspectives, is a color and light intervention in the Museum’s recently restored Mies van der Rohe McCormick House.

Both exhibitions are on view May 11 – August 25. Information about exhibition-related programming will soon be announced.

With a Capital P: Selections by Six Painters The title With a Capital P is a reference to an approach that doesn’t always use paint or brush.

Curated by six distinguished local painters Leslie Baum, Magalie Guérin, José Lerma, Nancy Mladenoff, Suellen Rocca, and Kay Rosen, the group exhibition consists of six rooms, each using different criteria to interpret artistic approaches and a wide-ranging conversation

about process and media by artists based in the Midwest and beyond.

“In early discussions with the six painters, I proposed a show that would provide space for other artists of their choosing, and produce a wide conversation around painting,” said Museum Executive Director John McKinnon. “Each painter took their own curatorial direction, resulting in a large survey show with six distinct sections and numerous layers of engagement. This rich exhibition is sure to captivate both art devotees and novices alike.”

More about the artists/ curators • Leslie Baum, whose contributions are the result of an ongoing plein air painting project, curated an exhibition including twelve other painters with interests in abstraction and landscape. Their pieces are hung salon style and joined

by Baum’s work, which contains light washes and patches of color describing the feeling of a specific time and place.

• Magalie Guérin, whose paint-

ing process includes constantly revisiting and building compositions, chose six artists whose work in sculpture complement some of her own shape-oriented painting process and sensibilities. She states, “Oil paint is sculptural in its application; it is not a far stretch to think about sculpture when painting.”

• José Lerma, known for works that are part art history and part personal mythology, invited numerous artists to make work on paper napkins, inspired by an installation piece from Elmhurst Art Museum’s collection by Jim Hodges.

In this section of the exhibition, the ordinary material of paper napkins has been transformed through the artists’ works.

• Nancy Mladenoff exhibits several pieces of her own work along with her personal art collection, which she lives with and is inspired by on a daily basis. Mladenoff’s recent narrative work explores the vernacular lives of women. In her current series, a frog serves as her personal avatar, providing shared

• Suellen Rocca, one of the original members of the Hairy Who, most recently curated The Figure and the Chicago Imagists: Selections from the Elmhurst College Art Collection at the Museum, chose to focus on multiple works by two other artists, Susan Frankel and Frank Trankina. Providing more exhibition space to each artist allowed a larger representation of their work to be shown.

• Kay Rosen’s text-based work reveals content through the formal configuration of words and letters, and their deconstruction. Rosen has dedicated her gallery solely to the work of the artist and teacher Kevin Wolff, who passed away in 2018. She explains, “His humor and wit, tinged with a contrariness, mischievousness, and sabotage, infuses most of his works.”

More about Luftwerk exhibition Luftwerk: Parallel Perspectives is a site-specific exhibition that uses color and light interventions to activate and interpret the McCormick House, designed by Mies van der Rohe. The installation by Luftwerk—the Chicago-based artistic collaborative of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero—heightens the

senses and alters perception while celebrating the use of geometry in the mid-Century prefab prototype.

Color is central to the visual transformation of the home’s architectural nuances, and largely inspired by an idea of the original developers Robert Hall McCormick and Herbert S. Greenwald, who offered to tint windows of their proposed prefab housing “almost any shade of the rainbow.”

The installation will include several light and color works with static and dynamic changing color relationships, including an immersive light piece that transforms a bedroom in the home, neon pieces with mirrored effects, pulsing lightboxes, and colorful glass panes.

The visual effects of color impact viewers’ experiences throughout the McCormick House’s domestic environment and shifts traditional spatial perceptions of the home while celebrating Mies’ signs of the modular prototype for prefab housing.

Parallel Perspectives is part of Bauhaus100, the global anniversary celebrations of the legendary German art school. It continues the artists’ year-long exploration of architecture by Mies, which began with the Barcelona Pavilion and will end with the Farnsworth House.

Another reason to increase the investment, Martire said, is because inadequate funding leads to disparities on racial lines. He said white students in an underfunded school face a funding gap of approximately $3,300 per student, that number is $4,600 per African-American student in an underfunded school and $4,800 per Latino student.

“We now know how inequitable the old school funding formula was,” he said He said 79 percent of new funding from the evidence-based model is going to school districts that educated 84 percent of the state’s African American students and 75 percent of Latino students.

On top of that, 89 percent of the funding went to districts that reached only 64 percent of their adequacy target or less.

Davis said when he attends a fellowship group with legislators from other states, Illinois is now talked about as “one of the leaders” in education funding reforms, as opposed to one of the worst in the nation as it was under the previous funding formula.

“We are now talked about in a different way,” he said.
