State’s Attorney finds officer justified in officer-involved shooting Berlin issues statement with information in death of Trevon Johnson

Details from night of event explained “On January 1, 2017, at approximately 11:26 p.m., DuPage County Deputy Sheriff Kuschell responded to the first of three 9-1-1 calls of a domestic violence incident in progress at a residence located at 17W747 Standish Lane in unincorporated Villa

Park. The call was placed by Ricquia Jones, Trevon’s sister. On the call, Jones can be heard yelling at the dispatch officer ‘Please, please, please bring the police now… Oh my God… he needs to go, he needs to go to jail… that’s my brother, he’s destroyed the whole entire house, he’s taking knives, he’s got glass and he’s pulling all the braids out of my hair.’

“When the dispatch officer asked

her to identify the assailant, Jones responded ‘Trevon Johnson.’ Jones also told the dispatch officer: ‘I’m pregnant, he put his hands on me, he punched me in the head…,’ and when the dispatch officer asked if Trevon had any weapons, Jones’ response was ‘Yeah he has a whole bunch of weapons.’

“Four minutes later, at 11:30 p.m., a second 9-1-1 call was placed re-

garding the incident at 17W747 Standish. This call was placed by Trevon’s brother Robert Pelts.

In his call, Pelts told the dispatch officer, ‘My brother’s going crazy.’

When asked by the dispatch officer if anyone was hurt, Pelts responded: ‘I think so. He threw glass at her, I think she is.’

“The dispatch officer then asked if Trevon had any knives on him,

to which Pelts replied: ‘Ah, yeah.

He threatened people.’ The dispatch officer asked what type of knife, to which Pelts replied, ‘A house knife, a kitchen knife.’ The dispatch officer then asked, ‘A large kitchen knife?

A carving knife?’ Pelts answered, ‘Yeah. He broke the glass. He’s throwing glass on people.’

Following is a statement from State’s Attorney Bob Berlin issued: April 20, 2017, explaining what happened in the case of a DuPage County Deputy Sheriff shooting Villa Park resident Trevon Johnson on January 1, 2017.

“Every case involving the use of deadly force by a police officer must be carefully and thoroughly investigated. Such scrutiny is required to ensure the protection of the civil rights of those involved and to maintain the public’s confidence in law enforcement.

“After a thorough and extensive investigation surrounding the shooting of Trevon Johnson by a DuPage County Deputy Sheriff, it is my determination that the officer, Deputy Scott Kuschell, who discharged his weapon five times, striking Mr. Johnson four times, was completely justified in his actions and that no criminal charges will be filed against the officer. In reaching this conclusion, my staff and I carefully reviewed the applicable law and thoroughly examined all the evidence, including but not limited to: Police reports 9-1-1 calls Statements from those involved Witness accounts Physical evidence Photographs Autopsy and Toxicology reports Sheriff’s Office radio traffic In car squad videos

The officer was also justified in using deadly force to defeat Johnson’s resistance to being arrested for the offense of aggravated battery, a forcible felony which involved the infliction or threatened infliction of great bodily harm, and to defeat Johnson’s resistance to arrest where Johnson’s actions indicated he would endanger human life or inflict great bodily harm unless arrested without delay.

Berlin praises those involved in incident’s investigation “I would like to thank the Illinois State Police for conducting a thorough and independent investigation, as well as Assistant State’s Attorney Bethany Jackson for her valuable assistance. It is indeed a tragedy any time a human life is lost.

In my opinion, the deputy involved in this unfortunate incident made every attempt to reach a peaceful conclusion under very stressful conditions. His concern for the safety and well-being of the other residents in the home is a testament to the excellent training that the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office provides for their entire force. Unfortunately, Mr. Johnson’s failure to obey the Deputy’s commands and his aggressive, threatening behavior resulted in the deputy discharging his weapon.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends as they attempt to come to terms with what happened that evening.”

ILACP asks Governor to declare Distracted Driving Awareness Week Effort brings awareness to distracted driving, texting According to a release issued by the Addison Police Department, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) has asked Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner to declare April 24 - 28 as Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week, in an effort to bring attention to the dangers and consequences association with distracted driving.

The ILACP, in partnership with AAA, and supported by the Illinois State Police, SafetyServe.com, the National Safety Council, the Illinois Insurance Association, almost 300 law enforcement/fire agencies and supporters from the private sector throughout Illinois, will work together during this week to educate motorists on all aspects of distracted driving. This campaign will also in-

clude the enforcement of applicable State distracted driving laws.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA): • 3,477 people were killed and an estimated 391,000 injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2015. That is a 9-percent increase in fatalities as compared to the previous year.

• 10 percent of fatal crashes, 15 percent of injury crashes, and 14 percent of all police reported motor vehicle crashes in 2015 were reported as distraction affected crashes.

• Texting while driving has become an especially problematic trend among millennials. Young drivers, 16 to 24 years old, have been observed using handheld electronic

devices while driving at higher rates than older drivers since 2007.

It’s time to drop the double standard on distracted driving - the dangers are real. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety: • In analyzing 2009-2012 data, that even while more than 8 in 10 drivers believed it completely unacceptable for a motorist to text or e-mail behind the wheel, more than a third of those same respondents admitted to reading text messages while driving.

Just as disturbing, even as fatalities go up, fewer drivers seem concerned about texting while driving. According to Foundation’s 2015 Traffic Safety Culture Index, significantly fewer motorists (77%) believed texting while driving is a problem, down from 96 percent in 2013, a 19-point

Grant funds will provide manufacturing equipment to train students

According to District 88 Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton, the school district received a $10,000 grant from the TMA Education Foundation on April 17. The grant will allow the District to buy machinery that will give students hands-on experience with equipment used in the manufacturing industry.

The grant will fund a vertical mill (a vertical machining center) for manufacturing courses at Addison Trail.

The mill uses rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece to machine parts to precise sizes and shapes.

“We know providing these opportunities and exposing students to skills used in the field helps prepare them to be college and career ready and builds successful futures,” Helton said.

The TMA Education Foundation is dedicated to improving, sustaining and promoting manufacturing technology education and encouraging the pursuit of careers in the industry.

Villa Park April 15 • Johnathan M. Caldera, 25, of Villa Park, was charged with battery near Kenilworth and Myrtle at around 1:20 a.m.

• Police said an unknown suspect struck a light pole in the 300 block of E. Kenilworth at around 11:41 p.m. and then drove away. The light pole fell on three other vehicles and damaged them.

• A male juvenile from Villa Park was charged with resisting a police officer at around 10:05 a.m.

April 14 Michael S. Johnson, 32, of Milwaukee, was charged with aggravated driving while license revoked, no insurance and operating a vehicle while registration is suspended.

City, College Recycling Extravaganza coming April 29

The City of Elmhurst is partnering with Elmhurst College, DuPage County and SCARCE to host the 2017 Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. The event will be held at Elmhurst College, using the Alexander Parking Lot. Items that will be recycled include: eye glasses, hearing aids, bicycles, Brita & Pur water filters, books, household goods, classroom supplies, building materials, working appliances, batteries (auto/lawnmower/boat - no alkaline batteries) and paper shredding (two box limit - no plastic or metal binders).

State law prohibits consumers from throwing out electronics with ordinary trash and also prohibits landfills from accepting them. At the Recycling Extravaganza, electronics will be accepted for recycling including computers, keyboards, modems, scanners, printers and cell phones.

There will be a fee for the recycling of Flat Screens, Projection TVS, and Monitors. The fee rate for units less than 21 inches is $25 and units over 21 inches is $35. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.

Where is your toaster? Cupboard or countertop?

We keep our toaster in the cupboard. Early in our marriage, this was a point of contention. My husband grew up in a home where the toaster sat on the counter. My family housed the breakfast appliance in the cupboard. As newlyweds, each of us was comfortable and happy with our own location of origin. But we couldn’t have it both ways – unless we got two toasters or a divorce and neither of those seemed like a viable option.

With this issue, I managed to talk him over to my side. But over the years I’ve acquiesced a time or

two in his direction. Marriage is a partnership. And cooperation. And changing where you keep your toaster or how you fold your socks.

And change is hardly ever easy.

But this isn’t about marriage. It’s about toasters. Toaster location, to

be exact.

You might be surprised that there are actual articles written about the location of one’s toaster. I was surprised. Bloggers are blogging about toasters and people like me are Googling those blogs.

The chatter is mostly about cleanliness and decluttering one’s kitchen. One might think a person who stores their toaster in the cupboard is neater than one who leaves it on the counter.

I don’t think this is the case.

I stumbled on this concept last week while eating a piece of toast and thereafter putting the toaster away. As I did, I noted the appliance

was a crumb-laden, scorch-filled mess – far from what I’d call neat.

The cupboard wasn’t much better. It, too, was littered with crumbs.

Each time someone puts the toaster in the cupboard a few crumbs fall out the bottom, accumulating over time.

We don’t notice, really, because the toaster sits atop the crumbs and the cupboard door shuts and our mess is out of sight, out of mind.

If I kept my toaster on the counter, I wouldn’t be able to ignore a pileup of crumbs. I’d probably wipe them away every morning after breakfast.

I’d be more cognizant of the appearance of my toaster and more prone

to give it a quick swipe with a soapy dishcloth or paper towel.

People who keep their toasters (and myriad other household objects) in the cupboard might appear decluttered, but they may be a whole lot messier than someone with an overloaded countertop.

Just because you can’t see someone’s toast crumbs doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

I said this column was about toasters. I guess I lied.

It’s about life and crumbs and what we do with them – because we all have crumbs and splotches

Stone 5th grade SSV club packs food for ‘Feed My Starving Children’

Stone Student Voice club members, parents and siblings volunteered to pack meals for Feed My Starving Children one day during their spring break on March 31.

Stone Student Voice (SSV) is a 5th grade club that practices digital citizenship. The club’s purpose is to teach students how to be safe and responsible digital citizens while using online communication in a positive and constructive manner and to give students a voice in an engaging medium to inform their family and community about Stone School programs, academic initiatives, PBIS events, and more.

Club sponsor Marypat Hradecky said the students came up with the idea of volunteering at FMSC, and that they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to help pack 104 boxes of food that will feed 61 children in the Dominican Republic for a year.

The students also participated in The Kind Club’s April Kindness Challenge, where they acted as the “kindness police” and kept busy catching other Stone students in the act of being kind.

Willowbrook girls badminton team places second at own invitational Chantos and Konrath both break 20-win barrier in singles competition

The Willowbrook girls badminton team had itself a positive outcome during a three-event stretch recently.

The Warriors took care of business in a pair of West Suburban Conference Gold Division matches. Willowbrook swept Morton 15-0 and also swept Leyden 15-0 at home on senior night.

The two wins moved Willowbrook to 12-6-1 overall and 4-1 in WSC Gold play.

At the 10-team Willowbrook Invitational, the Warriors were second.

Stevenson won the tournament with 79 points. Willowbrook was second with 69 points.

In the invitational, Grace Chantos was second at No. 1 singles. Hanna Konrath was second at No. 2 singles.

Charlotte Dewyer was third at No. 3 singles.

Grace Wachholz won the No. 4 singles title.

Sam Asher and Hannah Hewitt were third at No. 1 doubles. Millie Zachariah and Haily Vogt took second at No. 2 doubles. Luz Alcala and Ashley Garcia were third at No. 3 doubles. Dani Celio and Leksi Daszkiewicz took third at No. 4 doubles.

Nice Jenkins and Grace Roucka filled in for another team at No. 4 doubles and finished the day 4-1.

Willowbrook celebrated the badminton careers of seniors Chantos, Asher, Milena Sogura, Ashley Garcia and Hewitt in the 15-0 win over Leyden. “The girls played great, defeating Leyden on all levels,” said Willowbrook coach Brandon Murphy.

Through late last week Chantos was 20-9 at No. 1 singles, while Konrath was 21-6 at No. 2 singles.

every day,” said Murphy. “We are focusing on game strategy and the little technical things. As the season is in its final stretch, we want to make sure we are focusing on closing out matches, games and points.”

Murphy said Willowbrook has been aided by the tough schedule it plays on an annual basis. “The team is really gaining confidence,” he said. “As a program, we compete against the top teams in the state and that level of competition starts to shape us. We know we can compete with anyone and that’s why we are focusing on finishing.”

Beyond Chantos’ playing ability, Murphy lauded the senior’s leadership skills.

“Grace is a returning state qualifier and has mentored our singles players throughout the season,” he said.

“Grace is a tremendous athlete who has developed into one of the state’s best badminton players. She does all the right things. She has worked with

the younger girls on bringing them up to speed as the state series approaches. She is focusing on making one shot at a time and pushing the pace. Grace is fast and strong, and as a coach I’m trying to make sure she’s at her best as she tries to accomplish her goals.”

Konrath also has made big strides at the No. 2 singles position. “Hanna is truly something,” said Murphy.

“She plays with a lot of heart and is a big part of the future of Willowbrook badminton. She has come a long way this season. She went from playing on the freshman team last year to No. 2 on varsity. This is a huge jump, but she has not only accepted the challenge, but has excelled in the role.

She has placed in every invite so far and is pushing some of the best players in the area. I believe she is one to watch out for come sectional time.

She is a dangerous opponent who will push the competition to exhaustion. I can’t wait to watch her com-

pete this postseason and for years to come.”

Murphy also likes the progress he’s seen on the doubles side of the roster. Doubles players have included Hewitt, Sogura, Asher, Zachariah, Vogt, Alcala, Garcia and Celio.

“The doubles teams still are being worked out,” said Murphy.

“Throughout the season we’ve had many different combinations of teams. I believe that by sectionals we will have the best two combinations competing. All these girls have had success throughout the season and are working hard to find a spot in the sectional lineup. I feel confident that the four girls who will represent Willowbrook in doubles at sectionals are going to be ready to play.”

Murphy added Sogura, Waccholz and Dewyer also have been key contributors to the team’s success this spring.

“Every player has shown much improvement throughout the sea-

son,” he said. “Milena has impressed me lately. She has been a different person at practice and in competition. She is a very dangerous doubles player who can put the shuttle on the floor at any moment. I’ve really liked her effort this past month and the results are starting to show. Grace and Charlotte are sophomores and have been great additions to the varsity.

Grace took first at our invite in one of the best matches of the day. She dug deep and found another gear. Since then she has been a different girl. She has more confidence and the shuttle is flying off her racket. She is strong.

Charlotte is a smart player who just wins. She is doing some great things and at such a young age. She is going to be one of the top players in the program for the next few years.”

Alcala and Garcia have clicked at one of the doubles positions. “Luz and Ashley have been a joy to watch compete,” said Murphy. “They complement each other very well and have been racking up wins left and right.”

Willowbrook faced York in a WSC crossover match earlier this week ahead of Friday’s WSC Gold tournament at Hinsdale South.

“This is a fun group of young ladies that knows how to balance life and sports,” said Murphy. “They make things fun, but know how to turn it on when needed. Willowbrook badminton has a strong tradition of excellence and this team has done a great job of carrying the torch. I’ve been very pleased with the team’s progression this year. I believe we are getting better every week and am looking forward to the conference tournament. This season seems to have flown by this year, but we have a few more chances to take the court and demonstrate what we are capable of.”

Addison Trail baseball team wins four conference games Blazers move to 5-1 in WSC Gold play

The West Suburban Conference Gold Division race in baseball is heating up.

Addison Trail racked up four recent conference wins to move to 5-1 in Gold Division play. The Blazers are in the upper tier of the division along with division unbeaten Willowbrook and Downers Grove South (2 conference losses). Addison Trail

is scheduled to play a three-game series with Downers South this week and will face Willowbrook next week in a three-game series, which includes a Friday night game at Benedictine University in Lisle.

The Blazers were 3-2 winners over Hinsdale South to complete that series. Addison Trail found itself down 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Trevor Fulmer’s RBI single tied the game and then Mitch Gomez drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Blazers the win.

“Hinsdale South was a very exciting win,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy.

Nick Villasenor, Addison Trail’s

staff ace, went 5 2/3 innings before reaching his pitch count. He allowed one earned run, while striking out nine and walking only one.

Addison Trail also swept a threegame Gold Division series from Proviso East by scores of 16-0, 18-3 and 12-1.

The Blazers finished last week with an 8-2 WSC crossover loss to Glenbard West, which snapped a sixgame winning streak.

Addison Trail found itself 8-6 overall heading into this week.

“Our play in conference has been really good,” said Kennedy. “We’re playing well heading into the Downers Grove South series. It’s helped us

big-time. These are an important two weeks coming up for us.”

Kennedy has seen the team’s offensive fortunes take a turn for the better in recent weeks.

“While our pitching has been a constant, our bats have come around,” he said. “At the beginning of the year we were not getting the timely hits and not winning those one-run games. Now we’re getting the timely hits and we’re winning those close games. The kids have that confidence.”

Kennedy cited strong offensive production of late from the likes of Matt Crandall, AJ Parnell, Ricky Perez, Simon Marinelli and sophomore

Michael Scali.

“Those guys have been swinging the bat well,” he said. “Matt Crandall is hitting around .400. AJ still is swinging a hot bat. Ricky is swinging a hot bat, so is Simon. These guys are hitting around .375 and above and AJ is at .568. Michael Scali is swinging a great bat.”

Kennedy noted efforts such as the one against Hinsdale South will help as the season heads into its home stretch next month.

“As the conference race gets more competitive, these types of games are going to become more frequent,” he said. “We have that experience in those close games.”

Addison Trail girls soccer team making progress

Blazers boys volleyball team defeats St. Charles East

Addison Trail girls soccer goalie Priscilla Vega has been a key cog for the team thus far.

In a recent five-game stretch, Blazers coach Sergio Nunez noted Vega stopped nearly 40 shots.

“Priscilla has been consistent in our goal,” he said.

In recent action, the Blazers

dropped a West Suburban Conference Gold Division game to Hinsdale South.

“We’ve been working nonstop on improving our control and first touch,” said Nunez. “I’ve noticed progress in that sense but we still have a ways to go.”

Nunez said the team is working hard to advance its offensive game and also is turning in strong perfor-

mances on the defensive end.

“Offensively, we need to find the back of the net, something we struggle with,” he said. “Defensively, we execute the offsides trap better than any team thus far, but that only can help so much.”

Nunez likes the way his team has competed throughout the season.

“I’ve been impressed with our commitment to finish games with pas-

sion and we never give up,” he said.

In addition to Vega, Nunez also cited recent strong play from defender Aryana Carrera. “Priscilla and Aryana have stepped up for us,” he said.

Addison Trail boys volleyball The Addison Trail boys volleyball team recorded a recent 25-18, 2325, 25-15 non-conference victory against St. Charles East.

Jacob Grygo had 29 assists, seven kills and six digs. Colton Noel added 12 kills and two blocks. Eric Lynch added eight kills, while David Zielinski had five kills and two aces.

Mikey Strycharz finished with four kills and seven digs, while Arlind Rojba had 10 digs. Addison Trail improved to 9-6 overall with the win.

Montini Catholic High School, Lombard, recognized and congratulated student athletes achieving Girls Catholic Athletics Conference (GCAC) and Chicago Catholic League (CCL) Academic All Conference status. A total of 32 student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA for a complete

Montini Catholic varsity baseball team competes in Orlando “We were thankful for the chance to play a game at Champion Stadium, Spring Training home of the Atlanta Braves.”

Coach Janor looks forward to the trip each year and views it as an exceptional team building opportunity for his Broncos.

The Broncos played a very strong schedule and finished 3-3 on the trip, with victories over Shipley (Pennsylvania), Englewood (New Jersey), and Riverdale (New York). “In the

opener against Shipley, Jack (JR) Walsh and Alex Luka blasted triples,” informed Coach Janor. “Anthony Rogers was the winning pitcher!”

It was Bronco Liam Heggemann who went the distance on the mound against Englewood winning the five inning game for the Broncos (15-5).

“Luke Morrill had 2 hits, while Alex Weisshaar, and Sam Spadoni led the offense for the Broncos in the game,” said Janor.

Winning pitcher Bobby Meifert and relief pitcher Luke Morrill did not allow an earned run against Riverdale, and the Broncos held on to win that match-up (2-1), with Seth Quick and Sam Spadoni leading the offense.

Coach Janor expressed his thanks to all of the parents involved for sponsoring meals, snacks and for helping to make this third trip to Florida a memorable success.

IC Catholic Prep baseball team defeats Walther Christian Morris goes 3-for-4 with two RBI

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team wrapped up last week with a 7-3 Metro Suburban Conference crossover win against Walther Christian.

The Knights broke up a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning. IC Catholic Prep led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth and then scored three more times in that frame for the final margin.

The Knights had eight hits in the game. Trey Morris was 3-for-4 with two RBI from the leadoff position.

Brendan Russ had a hit. Joey Salvi went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Amari Reed had an RBI, while Matt Sutton went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Morris had a double and Sutton had two triples. The Knights also

In earlier action, the Knights dropped a 9-0 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game to Illiana Christian. The Knights were nohit in the game. Illiana Christian’s pitcher struck out 12 and walked one and faced one batter over the minimum.

Russ and Hoffman pitched in the game. Hoffman threw the final three innings.

Illiana also won the second game of the series 11-8 in Lansing. The Knights had 10 hits in the game.

Morris had a hit and a run scored.

We all wrestle with real issues and problems and wonder if our efforts are enough or if we should be trying harder.

We worry and ruminate about the metaphorical crumbs in our life that won’t even be a metaphorical blip on our radar in a year, much less five.

We get tired sometimes. We all struggle with how to keep our toasters and cupboards and counters squeaky clean – or at least have them appear that way to others.

This makes me sigh.

Let’s just say I have crumbs, and I know you do too. But crumbs are inconsequential. They aren’t important in the big scheme. I won’t point yours out if you’ll return the favor.

I’d love it if we could agree to embrace our collective crumbs and get on with the much more important business of living.
