Second largest USBC tournament in the country coming to Addison County ready to welcome 3,400 teams, 13,000 athletes at Stardust Bowl

The DuPage Sports Commission (DSC) and DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau (DCVB) are just weeks away from hosting one of the largest women’s tournaments in the United States—the United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships.

Larger than Chicago’s NFL Draft, this 71-day tournament will take place from April 24 through July 3 at Stardust Bowl in Addison. Organizing officials have been working with

DCVB since 2017 to bring this event to fruition—the welcome signs you may see throughout DuPage communities are just one final touch to numerous layers of coordination and collaboration by DCVB to deliver an event of this scale.

As one of only a few venues in the country with 84 lanes and the ability to host a tournament of this magnitude, Stardust Bowl Addison-DuPage County will welcome over 13,000 athletes plus families—

approximately 400 visitors each day over the tournament’s 10 weeks.

With an average of only four hours competing per day, guests fill their off time with dining, shopping, and entertainment.

The governing body reports USBC members as affluent, educated consumers with a strong lifestyle profile and demographics on par with other popular sports including golf and baseball.

Early numbers indicate the event

will generate significant impact county-wide, with more than $12 million in estimated economic impact.

As long-time partners in sports tourism, DCVB Executive Director Beth Marchetti and Stardust Bowl Manager Jim Saffold completed the bid process with officials with the national governing body in Arlington, Texas in December 2016, putting DuPage County on the short list to host the event.

DCEO/Illinois Office of Tourism, DCVB, the villages of Oak Brook, Downers Grove, Addison, Lombard and DuPage County all contributed resources to help provide a competitive bid.

Stardust Addison was selected in 2017 as host, and preparations have been under way to welcome teams from all over the country despite a move from 2021 to 2022. Doubletree

District 88 holds inaugural esports Super Smash Brothers Invitational District 88 is focused on connecting with all students to foster an inclusive environment and a sense of belonging to support each child on his or her journey to success.

As part of that initiative, the dis-

trict implemented esports (short for “electronic sports”) as an extracurricular opportunity for students this year.

Public health officials announce 14,049 new cases of coronavirus last week

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 14,049 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 45 deaths since April 8.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 3,094,485 cases, including 33,510 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois since the beginning of the pandemic. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years.

As of April 14, 464 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 70 patients were in the ICU and 32 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators. The preliminary seven-day statewide case rate is 110 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 Illinoisans.

A total of 21,648,058 vaccines have been administered in Illinois.

The seven-day rolling average of vaccines administered daily is 19,799 doses. Since April 8, 138,595 doses were reported administered in Illinois.

Of Illinois’ total population, more than 76 percent has received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, more

than 68 percent of Illinois’ total population is fully vaccinated, and more than 50 percent is boosted according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Data indicates that the risk of hospitalization and severe outcomes from COVID-19 is much higher for unvaccinated people than for those who are up to date on their vaccinations.

On April 12, IDPH announced it is using new federal guidelines for tracking COVID-19 at the community level. The new CDC guidelines emphasize the case rate and hospitalizations in order to better track the impact of COVID-19 in communities.

In addition, as a result of HHS announcing that testing providers are no longer required to report some negative test results, IDPH will no longer know how many tests are being done and will therefore no longer report test and case positivity.

Willowbrook students take part in teaching conference

Several Willowbrook High School students who are enrolled in the school’s Preschool Teaching Internship class or are student assistants with the Little Warrior Preschool program attended and volunteered at the recent Illinois Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (IL ASCD) Pre-K and Kindergarten Conference in Schaumburg. The IL ASCD website describes its association as “an organization interested in issues, trends and research that relate to learning, teaching and leading. (The group) offers leadership institutes, workshops and programs that focus on the quality of teaching and learning.” During the conference, students worked with Willowbrook alumna Andrea Zulawski (Class of 2019) and her mother, Nancy Zulawski, a retired School District 45 teacher. They learned about developing curriculum, differentiated instruction, play-based learning, child-centered activities, combining music and movement and social-emotional health of children and teachers. Willowbrook Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher Stephanie Ennis helped coordinate this learning experience.

Cami E. Whitaker was recently named as Addison Trail’s April recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her outstanding academic accomplishments. Whitaker, a senior, was recognized during the April 11 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

“I would consider the biggest influences on my life to be my parents, gymnastics coaches and teachers,” she said. “My parents are the most tenacious and kindhearted people I know. They have raised seven children, while owning a small business – which is no easy task. They have faced many hardships, including the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and a fire at their business just this past August.

They remained optimistic through everything and worked even harder to reopen their doors. They have been the best support system and set the ultimate example for my siblings and me.

My coaches taught me how to be a persistent and forward-thinking person through multiple injuries and surgeries. Most importantly, they taught me how to accept and learn from my failures. Bond set for Addison Coming events man accused of arson at Elmhurst BMW dealership DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth have announced that bond has been set for an Addison man Dario Salas accused of setting fire to a vehicle in the parking lot of an Elmhurst car dealership.

Dario Salas, 40, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge John Kinsella set bond at $200,000 with 10 percent to apply. Salas has been charged with two counts of arson, a Class 2 felony.

On April 13 at approximately 1:14 a.m., officers with the Elmhurst Police Department responded to the Elmhurst BMW car dealership located in the 500 block of W. Lake St., for a vehicle on fire in the west parking lot.

Upon their arrival, officers found a black Audi on fire. The Elmhurst Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.

It is alleged that on April 13, at approximately 1 a.m., an individual, later identified as Salas, entered the BMW parking lot from the northwest corner and approached the Audi vehicles parked in the west parking lot.

It is alleged that Salas then poured gasoline on the vehicle, set the vehicle on fire and then left the parking lot.

An investigation into the matter led authorities to Salas who was taken into custody by Elmhurst officers

I commend the Elmhurst Police Department for their outstanding work in identifying the fire as intentional and for their work in not only identifying Mr. Salas as the man who allegedly started the fire, but also for their extremely quick apprehension of the defendant.”

Salas’ next court appearance is scheduled for May 11 for arraignment in front of Judge Kinsella.

failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance in the 400 block of N. Gerard at 6:12 a.m.

Police said Zachary J. Thompson, 22, of Lombard, was arrested on a warrant out of Rock County, Wis., in the 100 block of W. Roosevelt at 8:02 p.m.

April 8 Jamilah A. Alsharif, 27, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident near N. Villa and E. Plymouth at 10:26 p.m.

Slices of life

Cacophony of chatter, chaos and beauty The birds outside my bedroom window go crazy every morning. I love it.

They wake up—sometimes one by one, other times as groups—all with something so say, something to contribute. Perhaps they are calling out to friends or family; perhaps they are marking their territory or chasing squirrels from their nest; perhaps they simply like to hear themselves sing. It doesn’t matter to me. I just like the music—and or— noise they make.

Because when they all chirp and tweet and whistle and trill and screech and caw and hoot and peck and squawk it often doesn’t sound much like music. It’s almost like they each are trying to outdo the other and that comes across as a rather cacophony of chaos.

I did not come up with that term on my own. I heard it and knew I loved it and knew it was the makings of a column.

And then I thought of the birds in the morning, and I knew where the cacophony would land.

The birdcalls are a cacophony of chaos. They compete with each other and contribute to the overall symphony of noise. It is music and chaos all at the same time.

Birds creating musical chaos: I thought that was the end of it.

Until I found myself sitting by the edge of a pool in the afternoon. I was in love with the sunshine.

Then the children entered.

Sometimes one by one, but mostly in groups, accompanied by their adult counterparts. They splashed their way into the water and it was obvious from the start that everyone had something to contribute. They began calling out to sisters and brothers—dunking and diving and squealing and giggling—each claiming their own spot in the pool.

Some demanded the attention of grown-ups to see them do a water trick. Others rejoiced loudly as they practiced swim strokes or dives. They added to their noise by

splashing and laughing.

They were, in a word, loud. It was almost as they were all trying to outdo one another.

It didn’t matter to me.

I love the sound of children playing: their chatter, their squeals, their screams and their laughter.

None of them seems to be listening to the other because they often aren’t and I thoroughly enjoy tuning to their own fun and glee. It’s almost like they are each trying to speak over the other and that comes across as a second cacophony of chaos.

Another one! Who would have thought this cacophony could happen more than once in nature?

Got me to thinking.

Maybe cacophony isn’t so much of an accident. Maybe chaos is planned.

Perhaps chaos is more common than we think. Birds in the back yard. Children at the pool. A family gathering. The dynamics of a workplace. A baseball, basketball or soccer game. A group of friends from high school or college. A book club. A golfing group. A classroom.

A neighborhood. A church. A school.

Perhaps we are all part of the cacophony of chaos. Wouldn’t that be lovely?

I think maybe it would be. Maybe it already is because lately I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe chaos is beautiful – if we allow it to be.

Appreciate your chaos.

Times dictate an expansion of tax credits available in Illinois

In February, Gov. JB Pritzker used his State of the State and budget speech to paint a very hopeful view for Illinois’ future, after two trying years.

The governor rightly praised our determination to fight through the COVID-19 pandemic and rebuild our economy. He noted our state’s finances are exceptionally positive today: Our debt has decreased, our budget balance has grown, and we will be able to take care of our education, health care, social services and other highest priorities.

We especially appreciate the governor’s plans to provide $1 billion in tax relief. Of course, our constituents struggle to pay for their groceries, their gas, their property taxes, and relief is needed.

But for so many lower-income working families, the stakes are higher. When the roof leaks, when a loved one gets hurt or sick, when the car has a flat tire or bum radiator, or when they are struggling to pay that month’s rent and can’t find another affordable place to live right now— these everyday problems we take for granted can grind their lives to a halt.

They need relief. They need more cash in their wallet, right now. They need Illinois lawmakers to step up since the federal Child Tax Credit aid they depended on has expired. They need an expanded Earned Income Credit in Illinois, along with a new Child Tax Credit.

We are leading the push behind Senate Bill 3774, which will provide real and meaningful tax relief to

nearly 5 million Illinoisans—almost 40 percent of our state’s population—by supporting two tools to give them their hard-earned money back.

Illinois has had the Earned Income Credit—modeled off the popular federal Earned Income Tax Credit— since 2000, and it has produced more than $3 billion in benefits during that time. Illinois’ tax structure is at its core one of the nation’s most regressive, burdening lower-income families and rewarding higher earners.

But the EIC helps to tip the scales toward equity by offering a cash refund of an average $600 for hard-working, low-income families.

Our proposed expansion would be phased in over three years. First, we will add adults who are younger than 18 and older than 65 to qualify for today’s EIC. Then, we will add the new statewide Child Tax Credit of at least $600 back to everyone who qualifies for the EIC and has dependent children under 17. Finally, we will give the CTC to anyone with dependents under 17, even those who cannot receive the EIC because they have no income.

Over those three years, we will expand the value of the state EIC from 18 percent today to 25 percent in the final year of the federal EIC. We all saw the success of the federal Child Tax Credit, which pulled 3.7 million children out of poverty nationwide. But since the federal government stopped mailing checks, we learned that 138,000 children in our own state fell back into poverty; that is unacceptable. Under our legislation, we would offer working parents a minimum $600 credit that they can use to meet their expenses,

weather the pandemic, and avoid having their kids go hungry at night.

The expanded EIC and Child Tax Credit would also help to close the racial wealth gap. Although the credit itself is not targeted by race, Black and brown working households in our districts will see tremendous benefits, as 65 percent of all Illinois Latinx and 44 percent of all Black homes would qualify for relief.

The respected fiscal think tank The Center for Tax and Budget Accountability strongly endorsed the idea earlier this year, calculating that more than $1 billion in local and statewide economic benefits from the expanded rebates will far exceed its initial price tag of about $400 million.

How do we create revenue from giving it back first? Working families have little savings, and often no ability to handle emergencies when they pop up. They will put the relief money right back into our local economy, with an estimated $2.50 benefit for every dollar we provide through the credits.

Illinois families need relief, especially when our finances are sound.

The Earned Income Credit and Child Tax Credit are the most direct, effective ways to provide that relief.

We have a growing number of legislators who will demand this smart, targeted relief be considered now.

We call on Gov. Pritzker and our colleagues in the House and Senate to make the EIC and Child Tax Credit a top priority as we negotiate a new budget.

Aurora man charged with shooting neighbor’s dog in the head DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Aurora Chief of Police Keith Cross have announced that bond has been set for an Aurora man charged with shooting a neighbor’s dog in the head.

John Fazzini John Fazzini, 61, appeared in bond court where Judge John Kinsella set his bond at $100,000 with 10 percent to apply.

On March 10, at approximately 9 p.m., Aurora police officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 300 block of Shadybrook Lane. Upon their arrival, officers found the victim, an 8½-year-old German shepherd named Jameson (Jamo) laying on his front porch.

Jamo had been shot once in the right side of his nose with the bullet exiting below his left ear. An investigation into the shooting found that at approximately 8:45 p.m., Jamo was out for a walk with members of his family, one of whom is a 10-yearold girl, when they allegedly encountered Fazzini across the street walking his dog.

It is alleged that Fazzini’s dog began to bark at which time Jamo wiggled out of his harness and approached Fazzini and his dog. It is alleged that Jamo ran circles

around Fazzini and his dog before trotting towards them. It is further alleged that when Jamo was approximately four to five feet away from Fazzini, he, without a warning, pulled out a gun and shot Jamo.

After being shot, Jamo returned to his front porch. It is alleged that following the shooting, Fazzini left the scene. Jamo was immediately taken to a local veterinary hospital where he received medical attention. He has since been released and is recovering from his injuries.\ “It is alleged that without provocation Mr. Fazzini pulled out a loaded handgun and shot a family pet just feet away from family members, including a 10-yearold girl,” Berlin said. “These allegations are simply unconscionable. This type of conduct will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law. Because of his alleged actions, Mr. Fazzini is now facing three felony charges.”

Fazzini was taken into custody without incident on an active arrest warrant April 12 following a traffic stop by Aurora Police. He has been charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, one count of reckless discharge of a firearm and one count of criminal damage to property, all Class 4 felonies. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 4 for arraignment in front of Judge Kinsella.

Working to thwart organized retail crime

To support retailers, update prosecuting resources and promote statewide economic growth, the Illinois Senate adopted a measure led by state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) to curb organized retail crime and hold ringleaders accountable.

“Organized retail crimes across the state have disturbed residents, wreaked havoc on businesses and stunted growth within local economies,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By advancing the

‘Don’t Stop the Dancing’ comes to the stage April 29-30

On Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, Addison Trail will present its annual Orchesis Show in the auditorium at Addison Trail High School.

Curtain times are 7 p.m. each evening, plus an additional performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

This year’s theme is “Don’t Stop the Dancing” and the event will feature more than 20 dance numbers that showcase an array of styles such as hip-hop, jazz, lyrical, salsa, modern-contemporary and musical theatre. Every aspect of the show – from the choreography, to the costumes to the set and lighting – is run by students, and the production will feature 30 dancers, 30 escorts and five hosts.

Hoffman Estates woman gets three years for starving two dogs to death DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced the second of two individuals accused of starving two dogs to death has been sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC)—the maximum available penalty.

Sarah Gorski, 21, of Hoffman Estates, appeared in court in front of Judge Michael Reidy, who handed down the sentence. On Feb. 22, Gorski entered a plea of guilty to three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class 4 felony.

On Nov. 8, 2021, Gorski’s co-defendant, Andre Norris, 29, of Hoffman Estates, was sentenced to three years in the IDOC, the maximum available penalty, after previously entering a plea of guilty to three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, also in front of Judge Reidy.

On March 2, Naperville officers and Naperville animal control personnel responded to a trail area regarding a disposed of dead German shepherd. The German shepherd, later identified as Meliodas, or “Otis,” was found wrapped in a bed sheet in a storage container in a wooded area near a drainage ditch. He weighed approximately 20 pounds, while this type of dog should normally weigh approximately 70 pounds.

An investigation into the matter led authorities to Gorski and Norris as the owners of Otis.

The investigation also found that the defendants had owned at least two other dogs, Scooby and Bubba.

Through the detectives’ investigation, it was learned that none of the dogs had many visits to the veterinarian.

On March 12, a search warrant was executed on the defendants’ home. When investigators arrived, they found Scooby, a German shepherd/hound mix, in a rusted dog crate, filled with animal feces, blood, and urine.

He weighed approximately 20 pounds, was severely starved, could not walk, had massive sores including one where you could almost see his bone and had feces stuck in his fur.

Bubba, a Corgi, was not located at this time. Through their investigation, authorities learned that Bubba had died in the first week of March. Investigators subsequently found Bubba in a field wrapped in a sheet where Gorski and Norris dumped him.

Both Otis and Bubba were sent to the University of Illinois Veterinary School for a necropsy where it was determined that Otis died from canine parvovirus, starvation and rat poisoning. Bubba, who weighed only four pounds when he was found, died of severe starvation.

“Simply put, with Sarah Gorski and Andre Norris responsible for their well-being, Otis and Bubba never stood a chance,” Berlin said.

Gorski will begin serving her sentence on June 2.

She will be required to serve 50 percent of her sentence before being eligible for parole.
