Last week, DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin addressed state legislators about his TransForm Illinois program and his efforts to reduce the size of government in Illinois.

“It takes a lot of hard work, but consolidation is the only way to shrink the number of governmental units in our state,” Cronin said.

“Our experience with consolidation has proven successful, but it’s a very long process. There is a whole lot of minutiae.

“I’d like to form a group to work toward more consolidation. I think it’s the mark of good government to live lean and trim away the excess wherever possible.”

Cronin reminded the room that Illinois has the highest number of governmental units of all the states in the nation.

He said the biggest obstacle to consolidation are the cynics.

“There are those who say ‘it’s a good idea, but you’ll never get it done,’” Cronin said. “But you have to work together, you have to have cooperation and it has to be a bi-partisan effort.”

The Chairman then talked about Transform Illinois, a coalition for efficient government supported by the Metropolitan Planning Council.

Sen. Tom Cullerton works to protect seniors from fraud National Center for Victims of Crime reported that Americans age 65 and older are more likely to be targeted by fraudsters and more likely to lose money once targeted.

Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois convened a Town Hall on Sunday, April 9 in DuPage County where he answered questions from suburban constituents on topics that included health care, Syria and other foreign policy matters, immigration, student loans, gun safety and campaign finance law.

Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois’ 8th District, was joined at the Town Hall by representatives from five progressive organizations: Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club, ACLU, Equality Illinois and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

“I applaud the constituents of the west and northwest Chicago suburbs that took time out from their weekend to engage on civic issues and learn more about progressive organizations that are working every day to stand up for the rights of all citizens,” he said.

Krishnamoorthi was elected to Congress in November 2016 with nearly 60 percent of the vote against his Republican opponent. He has been a leading voice in Congress to call for an independent investigation of the ties between the Kremlin and the Trump Administration.

Music professor named Fulbright Scholar Harbold to spend four months at Christian College in India

Elmhurst College music professor Mark Harbold recently was selected to receive a Fulbright-Nehru U.S. Scholar Award, which will enable him to spend four months teaching and collaborating with faculty at Madras Christian College in Chennai, India.

At Stone School last week, staff and students raised funds for pediatric cancer patients through the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation.

The “Change Challenge” campaign saw students bringing in pennies to help their pod win the challenge. The first team that collected the most pennies was the winner. Everyone wore Cubs attire to kick off the fundraiser last Monday, which also was the day of the Cubs home opener.

• Robbery was reported in the 900 block of W. North Ave. Police said that between 9:30 and 10 p.m., unknown suspects approached the victim while he was walking into a store.

The suspects then allegedly battered the victim and stole the victim’s wal-

• Criminal damage was reported in the 300 block of W. Roosevelt at around 5:23 a.m. Police said officers responded to a burglar alarm at a dealership and found a window in the overhead door that had been pushed in and a lock cut off a storage container in the lot. Nothing appeared to be missing.

My husband and I recently took on the task of refinishing the wood floors in three rooms that constitute our downstairs living areas – family room, dining room and miscellaneous room. (We’re not sure what to call it. Some days it’s the sunroom, other days the napping room. Right now, if I am being honest, it is the gaming room.)

I digress. Aside from being a ton of work (we were sore in places we didn’t even know we had) the big floor plan necessitated removing everything (and I mean everything) from the three spaces.

In the process I was reminded of one semi-embarrassing truth (aside from the fact we have an entire room dedicated to gaming): We’ve got a lot of stuff.

It happens to the best of us.

Things (too many things) accumulate over the years and there’s never really a good time or reason to get rid of something that’s still in perfect working order even though it’s old, obsolete and/or you haven’t used it since the last millennium. These items sit in their respective spots on the shelf or floor or cupboard and collect dust.

Emptying the rooms was liberating (and backbreaking). The space felt pure without all the stuff.

During the duration of our project, I came to value the empty purity. I didn’t want to refill our new rooms with old clutter and vowed any item returning post-project had to earn its spot.

I scrutinized knick-knacks and whatnots, seeing them with new, critical eyes. How were the fake apples in a bowl benefiting the dining room? Had the cinnamon-scented pinecones from October outworn their welcome, not to mention fragrance? An empty frame lying atop the piano – what was its purpose?

We found a container for housing baby fish from back when we bred guppies circa 2007. Removing it was a no-brainer.

All the poster boards we’ve ever owned with all the school projects from my entire family’s history were stored behind a desk. For what, I don’t know. I guess when you put a lot of work into a poster board it’s difficult to rid yourself of it. Not any more. Goodbye Star of the Week poster from 2005. Be gone!

We had a collection of at least 200 CDs that we hadn’t listened to in at least a decade. To be honest, I don’t even know if we have a CD player anymore. They were placed in a box and relegated to the basement. This put them one step ahead of the pseudo fruit and scentless pinecones, which were exiled to the garbage.

Also expelled were dust bunnies too numerous to count. I swear those things self-multiply. The wood refinishing project stirred up some dust, but we were plentiful in that department even before the job began. It feels good to know we are bunny-free. No, it feels great.

Then there were the books. I love books, but having hundreds of children’s early reader books when you haven’t had an early reader for nearly a decade sort of seems absurd, or at the very least a waste of shelf space. The books need new sets of emerging reader hands to hold them and put them to work again. Until then, they sit in the basement alongside the CDs and two big tubs of VHS tapes that hold more nostalgic value than actual worth.

Not everything was banished.

Items that made the cut included the furniture, TV, family photos, a life-size ceramic iguana (made by our son-in-law) and a dish full of jelly beans, because pinecones may be out of season, but jelly beans are not. The cats get to stay.

As do my husband and kids.

I’d never consider banishing them – even if they didn’t help move all the heavy furniture.

• Be cautious at work: “Familiar fraud” is common and occurs when a victim’s identity is stolen by someone he or she knows. At work, store personal items like wallets and smartphones in a locked cabinet. Don’t copy or scan sensitive documents, as memory functions can save your data. At night, turn your computer off and sign out of sensitive sites. Change passwords often. If you have any concerns with the way your company stores personnel records, talk to your employer or human resources department about their protocols.

• Get smart with your smartphone: Smartphones and other devices can be a data goldmine for identity thieves.

Use locking features on all your devices, including your laptop.

Don’t use automatic login features and always log off when you are finished. Always keep your computer’s anti-virus software

up-to-date and be cautious when using public wi-fi. Finally, when upgrading your mobile device to the latest model, be sure to scrub all the data from your old device before switching to your new phone.

• Monitor your credit: Consider enrolling in a credit monitoring product such as Experian CreditWorks, which offers additional peace of mind through real-time notifications of any changes to your Experian Credit Report. Changes to your report are important to review, as they may be signs of fraud. The newest CreditWorks feature, Experian CreditLock, can be especially helpful in taking greater control over your credit information.

This product feature allows you to easily lock and unlock your Experian Credit Report in realtime without formally freezing your credit report, which can be a cumbersome process.

By locking your Experian Credit Report, creditors no longer have access to it (except for soft

inquiries from creditors with whom you already have a financial relationship), which means criminals can’t apply for credit in your name. This should help deter identity thieves, as well as block unwanted inquiries that result in extensions of credit, which can impact your credit scores. In

addition, if a creditor or lender tries to access your report, you’ll receive a real-time alert via email and app notification so you can take action immediately.

By safeguarding your information and monitoring your credit, you can better ward off the threat of identity theft.

In my opinion

My take on Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear I recently went on a retreat in Seattle that included a creativity workshop with Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love. Her recent book is Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. I respect Liz even more after being in the same room with her loving and down-to-earth energy. She knows how to tell a story and knows how to hug (read my blog at www.kellyepperson.com).

Creativity asks you to enter realms of uncertain income. The less I fight my fear, the less it fights back. If I can relax, fear relaxes too.

The creative process is both magical and magic.

Ideas are a disembodied, energetic life form. Ideas are driven by a single impulse: to be made manifest.

Cooperate fully, humbly and joyfully with inspiration. You are neither a slave to inspiration nor its master, but something far more interesting - its partner. You can thank creativity for having blessed you with a charmed, interesting, passionate existence.

Be ready. Keep your eyes open.

Listen. Follow your curiosity. Ask

questions. Sniff around. Remain open.

Trust in the miraculous truth that new and marvelous ideas are looking for human collaborators every single day.

My most outlandish beliefs about creativity might actually be true.

I work steadily and I always thank the process. This is how I want to spend my life. I am going to spend as much time as I can creating delightful things out of my existence, because that’s what brings me awake and that’s what brings me alive. (Trust me, your soul has been waiting for you to wake up to your own existence for years.)

You are not required to save the world with your creativity. Just say what you want to say, and say it with

all your heart. Share whatever you are driven to share. Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart. The rest of it will take care of itself.

Push yourself deeper into the world, to explore more bravely. Or go more deeply and bravely inward.

Stop complaining. Try saying this: “I enjoy my creativity.” Never delude yourself into believing that you require someone else’s blessing (or even their comprehension) in order to make your own creative work. And always remember that other people’s judgments about you are none of your business.

• Raja pushes for suburban infrastructure project, western access to O’Hare Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi today hosted a jobs summit on the economic impact of developing western access to O’Hare International Airport at a bipartisan gathering of key stakeholders, including government, business and labor leaders. Speakers included Illinois State Toll Highway Authority Board Chairman Bob Schillerstrom, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, and Marc Poulos, executive director of the Foundation for Fair Contracting (FFC) and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150. As part of the jobs summit, Rep. Krishnamoorthi circulated a letter to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board to urge support of economic development by allowing the Western Access to O’Hare project to proceed.

“I’m glad we could bring together leaders from across the community to discuss the economic benefits of this project and the need to see it completed,” said Krishnamoorthi.

“Simply put, the Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project will create jobs. This is one of the best investments we can make for our community to strengthen our economy, our infrastructure, and our entire transportation system.

• Grants available for children’s health treatments UnitedHealthcare’s Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) is now seeking applications for medical grants for children’s health. Illinois families in need of financial assistance for child medical care costs are encouraged to apply.

Since 2013, UHCCF has awarded more than 225 grants and qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 per grant with a lifetime maximum of $10,000 per child. Since 2007, UHCCF has awarded more than 13,000 grants valued at over $35 million to children and their families across the United States, and aims to surpass 20,000 grants by Jan. 1, 2020.

It is ideal for treatments, services and equipment that is not covered, or not fully covered, by their commercial health insurance plan.

To be eligible for a grant, a child must be 16 years of age or younger. Families must meet economic guidelines, reside in the United States and have a commercial health insurance plan.

Grants are available for medical expenses families have incurred 60 days prior to the date of application as well as for ongoing and future medical needs.

Families do not need to have insurance through UnitedHealthcare to be eligible.

Army Trail attend Kane County Cougars game About 400 Army Trail School students, staff members and chaperones attended a Kane County Cougars game on Wednesday, April 12 as a reward for their participation in Ozzie’s Reading Club, a reading incentive program. The students had the opportunity to parade on the field before the game, they got

to spend time visiting with the Cougars’ mascots, Ozzie and Annie, and everyone enjoyed a free hot dog for lunch. Second grader Kimberly Garcia made the announcement to “Play ball” as the game began (playball. jpg). Even though the Cougars lost, everyone enjoyed a beautiful day at the ballpark.

The students of Army Trail School had the opportunity to parade onto the field before the Kane County Cougars game on Wednesday, April 12. They even got to high-five some of the players.

Summer Camps for students entering grades 7, 8 and 9 Starting in June, Technology Center of DuPage (TCD) in Addison is hosting seven summer culinary camps and three robotics camps for students entering grades 7, 8 and 9 next fall. Each four-day camp (Monday - Thursday) takes place at TCD, 301 S. Swift Road in Addison. For session dates and more information, visit tcdupage.org.

Culinary campers will be guided by a chef instructor in kitchen terminology, teamwork, basic skills, and fundamental cooking methods while producing a delicious menu each day. The fee is $100 and each camp is limited to 15 participants.

Camp time frame is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day; students eat what they make. Robotics campers will

be guided by an electronics/engineering instructor as they learn to build robotic vehicles and program them to navigate, retrieve objects, and challenge other campers to complete tasks. Camp timeframe is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day; students must bring a lunch/ beverage.

Leading the way is a truly unique and one of a kind 18-hole reversible golf course designed by Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design, which opens to the public at Forest Dunes in Roscommon this spring, after a limited launch in 2016. The Loop is an innovative, walking-only experience with two different layouts that alternate directions on a daily basis so golfers can have a distinct experience.

A second Renaissance Golf Design project opening this spring is the highly-anticipated Stoatin Brae course, which is the sixth golf course for Augusta’s Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort.

As part of Southwest Michigan’s largest and oldest golf destination, Stoatin Brae is a dramatic departure from Gull Lake’s other five courses. Third-generation owner Jon Scott worked with Renaissance Golf Design architects to create a championship-caliber, 18-hole, par-71 golf course that stretches more than 6,800 yards.

The third course at Island Resort and Casino in Escanaba will open this fall. Sage Run was designed by Michigan-based architect Paul Albanese and features mostly hardwoods with golf holes that run up and around a geographical formation known as a drumlin, as well as a rugged, rolling terrain that is set off by earth tones, browns and tans. Albanese makes some comparisons to Royal County Down, a Northern Ireland golf club that is rated among the finest in the world.

Finally, Arcadia Bluffs, one of the premier courses in the country located on the shores of Lake Michigan near Frankfurt, has announced it will also develop a new golf course. Construction of the South Course at Acadia Bluffs is scheduled to begin this spring, with completion anticipated for summer 2018. The 310-acre site is located approximately 1.5 miles South of Arcadia Bluffs, directly off of M-22.

Addison Center for the Arts exhibits nature’s beauty “April showers bring May flowers…..” and Addison Center for the Arts brings to you the flowers and landscapes of the talented artist Marge Hall. The gallery will be presenting a collection of oil paintings titled, “Nature’s Beauty”.

Marge Hall is a floral portrait artist, designer, award-winning teacher at the Dupage Art League in Wheaton. This nationally recognized artist has discovered her own color vocabulary based on a pallet that combines elements of strong but almost mystical light with drama and photo realism. This exhibit reflects the vibrant colors and luscious textures that captures the spiritual elements of nature.

Her attention to detail is displayed in the subtle tonal qualities of each petal she paints.

Ambar Rivera elected 88’s Best for April at ATHS Ambar Rivera has been named as Addison Trail’s April recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her outstanding academic accomplishments. Rivera, a senior, was recognized during the April 10 District 88 Board of Education meeting. To watch her 88’s Best presentation, go to dupage88.net/site/page/6420.

Rivera has earned a grade of A in every class she has taken at Addison Trail. She has completed 11 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and nine Honors courses.

“It comes as no surprise to me that Rivera is being recognized for District 88’s Best in the category of academics,” said Aileen Sullivan, science teacher.

“As a freshman taking biology honors, it was always clear how dedicated Rivera was to her studies. She had a self-motivation about her that was contagious.

She made her successful grades look easy when, in reality, she worked very hard to earn her high grades.

In addition, Rivera is humble when it comes to her academic excellence and is always willing to lend a helping hand. I am proud of her achievements and wish her the best with her future endeavors.”

Track has helped her to develop self-confidence and meet new friends. Rivera has served as a designated captain at times and has helped develop workouts for team members.

Addison Trail baseball team making its move

Blazers score wins against Downers Grove North and Hinsdale South

The Addison Trail baseball team turned heartbreak into major progress recently.

The Blazers went through a recent rough stretch where it lost the completion of a suspended game against West Suburban Conference Gold Division foe Hinsdale South in 14 innings (3-2) and then lost the next day to York in eight innings in a WSC crossover game.

“That was a couple of tough games for us,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy.

Instead of letting the slide continue though, the Blazers did the exact opposite and got momentum back on their side in a major way with victories against that same Hinsdale South team and Downers Grove North.

South 1-0 in dramatic fashion and then defeated Downers North 6-3.

“The last two games against Hinsdale South and Downers North were outstanding,” said Kennedy.

“A couple of back-to-back wins really picked us up. We played some great baseball.”

Addison Trail staff ace Nick Villasenor picked up the win in the 1-0 Hinsdale South triumph.

Villasenor walked his first batter of the year in the seventh inning of that game. After the Hinsdale South win, Villasenor had 51 strikeouts, one walk and had allowed two earned runs in 28 innings of work.

He fanned nine against Hinsdale South.

“Nick threw an outstanding game,” said Kennedy.

Bobby Daniels drove in a pinch runner for AJ Parnell in the bottom of the seventh to give the Blazers

the win.

“AJ has been crushing the ball for us,” said Kennedy. “He’s hitting .490 right now. He also picked up the save against Downers Grove North.”

In the Downers North win, Trevor Fulmer was the winning pitcher.

He went six innings and allowed two runs.

“The first two batters of the game scored,” said Kennedy. “They had back-to-back doubles and then a single. He settled down after that and was outstanding. He got stronger as the game went on. He threw 51 pitches the first two innings and then threw 50 pitches over the last four innings. He settled in and did a fantastic job for us. He also drove in two runs.”

With Addison Trail up 3-2 in the fifth, Ricky Perez had a two-out double that drove in a pair of runs.

“That was huge,” said Kennedy of Perez’s hit. “That put us up by three and was a huge dagger at that point.”

Kennedy was thrilled with how his team responded after the losses to Hinsdale South and York.

“They showed resiliency,” he said.

“They played tough. They had every reason to bury their head in the sand. This puts us in a nice position now.”

Kennedy pointed out four of Addison Trail’s losses have come by one run. “In three of the games we had the lead in the sixth inning or later,” he said. “We’re a ball bouncing the other way here or there from being 7-2. We need to finish those types of games if we want to be a good team. The guys took that to heart and realized we have to finish those types of games if we are to be a good team.”

Wisner also has been pleased with the way his team is moving runners along on the base paths. “We are getting guys on and moving them over,” he said. “We are hitting the ball and putting it in play and making the other team make a play. Plus, our pitching has been very good. Alec Michaelson has given up one earned run the entire year and is 3-0. He’s pitched really well.”

Willowbrook was scheduled to open a threegame WSC Gold series earlier in the week against Morton.

This year, the WSC has gone to having conference series played during the week and switching the WSC crossover games to Saturday with a JV game that follows.

“I like the switch, but it doesn’t leave a lot of room for makeups if games get rained out,” said Wisner. “If you do get rain, you are going to play a lot of games in a short amount of time. I think we have a stretch coming up where we play eight games in nine days. I also like that Saturday now includes a JV game.

That means every week every kid is going to play seven innings somewhere.”

Addison Trail has a busy conference week scheduled. The Blazers have a three-game series against Proviso East and were scheduled to play the makeup third game of the Hinsdale South series on Wednesday.

“If the first two games are any indication of what is going to happen in the third game, it’s going to be another gut-it-out game,” said Kennedy late last week. “It’s going to be who makes the least amount of mistakes. In the two games between us, each game was separated by one run and the home team won each game. They were 8-0 when we beat them. For us to play Hinsdale South, the defending conference champion, that tough shows we belong up there.”

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team won the recent Rolling Meadows tournament.

Addison Trail finished 4-1 in the tournament and won the head-tohead tiebreaker with Buffalo Grove to win the round-robin event.

Addison Trail scored a 26-24, 2325, 15-10 win against Buffalo Grove to start the tournament. The Blazers then lost 10-25, 25-23, 15-8 to Rolling Meadows. Addison Trail capped the tournament with three victories in a row. The Blazers downed St. Viator (25-19, 25-14), Fremd (23-25, 25-15, 15-7) and the Rolling Meadows JV team (25-7, 25-11).

Earlier, the Blazers were 25-14, 25-11 winners against Proviso East in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

Arlind Rojba had nine assists, seven aces and one kill. Michael Pudlo added four kills and three aces, while Joe Mosny had two aces. The win moved the Blazers to 2-0 in WSC Gold action.

Willowbrook boys volleyball team surpasses seed at Warren invitational Warriors go 5-3 through first eight contests

The Willowbrook boys volleyall team recently took 13th place out of 24 teams at the Warren invitational.

Willowbrook originally was seeded 21st.

In pool play, the Warriors lost 2519, 25-13 to Deerfield and recorded a 22-25, 25-17, 16-14 come-from-behind win against Vernon Hills.

In Silver bracket play, Willowbrook lost 21-25, 25-19, 15-10 to Wheaton North, defeated Mundelein (25-22, 26-24) and Reavis.

Willowbrook was 5-3 overall through its first eight matches and 1-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

Willowbrook coach Ryan Bazon noted the Warriors are having success with a relatively young roster.

“This is a young team this year with a roster that has nine juniors—all of whom are competing at the varsity level for the first time,” he said. “The team has done a good job of adjusting to the speed of the varsity game.

We are learning every match. The thing we have improved the most on is communication on the court. The guys have done a better job recently of being vocal and taking leadership on the court.”

Bazon has seen strides made on the offensive end after a slow start in the team’s first match of the year.

“We really struggled our first match

of the year with the hitter-setter connection and passing game,” he said.

“We have improved our timing and as a result have gotten better attacks.

Also, I think our ball control is improving every match, which has been a big reason why our offense has been more efficient. Our serving has improved as well. We are making our serves and relying on our blocking/ defense to keep us in matches.”

Bazon also likes the team’s makeup at the middle blocker position with seniors Pete Alessandri and Andy Shrekengost. “We also have a good middle presence at the net,” he said. “Our defense has improved dramatically. The kids are starting to read hitters and get touches on al-

Senior Calvin Linnig and junior Nick Cookingham are running Willowbrook’s 6-2 offense. “Both players have stepped up at setter and are doing a nice job,” said Bazon.

Willowbrook also has been bolstered by the likes of libero Buddy Martens, outside hitter Tim Keefe and defensive specialist JT Beausoleil. “Buddy is becoming a good, vocal leader on the court,” said Bazon.

“Tim has improved his overall game, especially on the defensive end. JT has stepped up huge on defense. He is the sparkplug of the team and is constantly giving 100 percent.”

By Mike Miazga Correspondent After a couple of tough contests, the IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team got back in the win column with a 5-1 non-conference decision against Evergreen Park.

Tessa Langan, Grace Fuller, Olivia Hurt, Kaitlyn Grady and Sophie Zanoni each had a goal. Fuller had two assists, while Hurt and Grady each added an assist.

Earlier, the Knights dropped an 8-0 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game to defending Class 1A state-champion Wheaton Academy and also lost 3-2 to Riverside-Brookfield in another Blue Division game.

The win against Evergreen Park pushed IC Catholic Prep to 7-3 overall.

“Wheaton Academy always is a tough one,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Tom Schergen. “They are very good and they are probably just as

good, if not better, than when they won the 1A title. Wheaton Academy is in 2A now so we don’t have to see them again.”

In the Riverside-Brookfield game, R-B led 1-0 before Hurt hit a free kick into the upper corner of the net from 25 yards out to tie the game.

“R-B put two away to make it 3-1 and then we scored with 20 minutes left. The last 20 minutes it was press, press, press,” said Schergen.

“We couldn’t get that last goal. We had about a week-and-a-half off for spring break and I think that affected us a little bit.”

Fuller had IC Catholic Prep’s other goal against R-B with an assist coming from Demitra DelFiacco.

Through the R-B game, Hurt was leading the team in goals with 10, while Langan had nine.

“I definitely like our energy and intensity we bring every game,” said Schergen. “Against Wheaton Academy it was 2-0 at halftime. We brought the intensity to the game in the first half. They were better-skilled than us, but we were able to hang with them there. We know that energy and intensity won’t be missing. The girls will play hard. We’re still working on fixing some small things, but I really

enjoy the intensity they bring.”

Schergen also likes how the team’s newer players have familiarized themselves with their teammates and the system. “We have some freshmen who are new to the team and they are becoming pretty acclimated and playing significant minutes,” he said.

“They have blended in well with the rest of the team.”

Schergen said another bright spot on the team has been its goalkeeping with Gabby Smola and Rochelle Spizzirri splitting time at the position.

“Compared to last year it’s been leaps and bounds,” he said. “Both of them have helped solidify our back line. They have three shutouts in (10 games). They have done a nice job back there and deserve a lot of credit.”

Schergen said the end game for the Knights is to be on the top of their game once the IHSA postseason hits.

“Our big goal and big picture is the postseason,” he said. “We want to be playing at the top of our game at that point. We’re going to use these next couple weeks to prepare for that and to prepare for the Adidas Tournament of Champions that we will play in out in Iowa. We want to be playing at

IC Catholic Prep led 3-1 after four innings, but Wheaton came back to score three runs in the sixth inning.

Trey Morris, Brendan Russ, Austin Reed, John Hoffman, CJ West and Matt Sutton each had a hit. Reed, Hoffman and West scored a run each, while Sutton drove in two runs. Reed had a double and stole two bases. Hoffman and West each had a stolen base.

Russ was the losing pitcher. He allowed six hits and struck out four over six innings.

The Knights came right back the next day and earned a 2-1 win over Wheaton Academy in Elmhurst. IC Catholic Prep trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first and scored two runs in their half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead, which would hold for the rest of the game. Both teams had six hits.

Morris had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Knights. Reed had a run scored and a hit. West had an RBI. Hoffman went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Christopher Slowinski had a hit. Morris and Reed each stole a base.

Reed threw a six-hit complete game.

He allowed only the one earned run and struck out seven to pick up the win.

The Knights then won a MSC crossover game by a 3-0 count against Guerin Prep in a game played at Triton College.

The Knights had eight hits and took a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Sutton had a hit and a run scored.

Morris went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Reed went 1-for-3 with an RBI. West had a hit, as did Joey Salvi, who also drove in two runs. Slowinski added a hit of his own. Salvi and West each had a double. Reed and Sutton each had a stolen base.

West was the winning pitcher. He went the first six innings and scattered three hits, while striking out five. Andrew Falduto pitched the seventh inning and struck out two to pick up the save. West and Falduto did not walk any batters and IC Catholic Prep committed no errors in the game. The two needed only a combined 78 pitches to throw the shutout.

IC Catholic Prep then dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Evergreen Park. The Knights lost the opener 2-1. Morris, Reed, West and Falduto had a hit each and Salvi had two hits.

Falduto drove in the team’s only run.

Salvi had a double among those two hits.

Salvi pitched the first five innings and allowed only six hits, while striking out three. Alfonso Cepeda pitched the sixth inning and struck out a batter.

In the finale, IC Catholic Prep lost 11-4. Sutton went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Morris was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Reed had an RBI. Hoffman went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Falduto had one hit. IC Catholic Prep stole 10 bases in the game. Sutton had three steals, while Hoffman, Moris and Salvi each had two. West stole one

Jeep the Mac coming to St. Ignace, Mi. Jeep owners will unite on April 21 and 22 in St. Ignace, Michigan.

Jeep drivers will show their pride in a celebration that crosses Michigan’s most iconic landmark - the Mackinac Bridge. Drivers will meet on Friday morning to do a crossing over the Mackinac Bridge, followed by a welcome party in St. Ignace. Saturday takes participants to Drummond Island so you can do some sight-seeing and get the full “Up North Experience”.
