District 4 welcomes new School Board member Frangidakis to fill vacancy left by Triantafillos

Zack Frangidakis was elected as the newest member of the Addison School District 4 Board of Education in the Consolidated Election on April 4, 2017.

Frangidakis has lived in Addison since 2005. He and his wife have two young daughters, one of whom

is currently an ASD4 student. Frangidakis earned a Bachelors degree in Information and Decision Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago and he is employed as a Technology Systems Administrator in a K-8 school district. He has 15 years of experience working in

school and supporting the technology needs of students and staff and he also volunteers at his church supporting student technology needs.

Frangidakis will be taking the seat of Taso Triantafillos, who has served on the District 4 Board since 2013. Both Triantafillos and Fran-

gidakis work in the technology field and have emphasized their desire to keep schools up to date with technology initiatives that will benefit student education.

“We are grateful to Taso for his dedication to the students and taxpayers through his service on the

Board of Education over the past 4 years,” said Dave Williams, Board of Education President, “and we will look forward to having the opportunity to work with Zack to continue to provide the best educational experience we can for Addison’s children.”

AT to present 50th Anniversary Orchesis Show

ACA presents Paintings

by Marge Hall “April showers bring May flowers.....” and Addison Center for the Arts brings to you the talented artist , Marge Hall, and her flowers and landscapes. Addison Center for the Arts Gallery will be presenting a collection of oil paintings titled, “Nature’s Beauty.”

Marge Hall is a floral portrait artist, designer, award-winner and teacher at the Dupage Art League in Wheaton. This nationally recognized artist has discovered her own color vocabulary based on a pallet that combines elements of strong but almost mystical light with drama and photo realism. This exhibit is bold and dramatic yet sensitive and intimate. This exhibit reflects the vibrant colors and luscious textures that captures the spiritual elements of nature. Her attention to detail is displayed in the subtle tonal qualities of each petal she paints.

“Nature’s Beauty” can be viewed May 3 to June 9, 2017.

Police Reports

Glen Ellyn men charged with armed robbery

Area police departments recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that bond has been set for the second of two men, both now former students at the College of DuPage, accused of stealing a female student’s purse and backpack at gunpoint in a ColDeandre Ford lege of DuPage parking lot.

Last week, Judge Richard Russo kept bond at $300,000 with 10% to apply in accordance with a previously issued arrest warrant for Deandre Ford, 19, of 390 Spruce Lane, Glen Ellyn.

On February 11, 2017, Ford’s alleged accomplice, Javon Burruss, 19, also of 390 Spruce Lane, Glen Ellyn appeared in Bond

Addison April 6 Police said Dorian Sobus, 25, of Addison, had a failure to appear warrant out of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department for retail theft.

April 4 • Police said Diana C. Clark, 29, of Chicago, had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for retail theft, and a failure to appear warrant out of the Orland Park Police Department for a traffic violation.

• Rodrigo Gomez, 21, of Addison and Angel Hernandez, 21, of Schaumburg, were charged with unlawful contact with a street gang member in the 1-100 block of W. Michael Lane at around 8:23 p.m.

March 31 Remando Stevens, 48, of Chicago, was charged with hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield and driving while license suspended in the 400 block of N. Swift Road at around 6:40 p.m.

Both men have been charged with one count of Armed Robbery (Class X Felony), one count of Aggravated Robbery (Class 1 Felony) and Javon Burruss one count of Robbery (Class 2 Felony).

It is alleged that on September 12, 2016, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the two men approached their victim, who was alone in the parking lot. It is alleged that Burruss was armed with a gun, later determined to be a BB gun, and that he held the gun in a “ready position” during the robbery. It is further alleged

that the two men stole the student’s purse and backpack and then fled the scene. An investigation conducted by the College of DuPage and Wheaton Police Departments led authorities to Burruss and Ford. Burruss was apprehended by the College of DuPage and Wheaton Police Departments on February 10, 2017.

Last month, Ford was apprehended by authorities in Texas and was transported to DuPage County on April 4, 2017.

Ford’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 1, 2017, in front of Judge Robert Miller. Burruss’ next court appearance is scheduled for April 13, 2017, in front of Judge Brian Telander.

The public is reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

College program recalls Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor In 2012 when author and humanitarian Elie Wiesel received the Chicago Tribune Literary Prize, Tribune critic Howard Reich interviewed him about his life and work. The two struck up a friendship that lasted until Wiesel’s death in July of 2016,

brought together by Wiesel’s work, and by the Holocaust.

Reich will discuss his relationship with Wiesel and Wiesel’s literary classic, Night—the haunting memoir of his experience in the Nazi concentration camps during the annual Ho-

locaust Service of Remembrance and Lecture at Elmhurst College.

The program will take place on Sunday, April 23 at 7 p.m. in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Admission is free and the public is

invited.

Wiesel was a survivor of the death camps; and Reich has shared with the world the story of his mother, a Holocaust survivor who had hidden from the Nazis as a young girl and later would struggle with the aftermath.

The Holocaust Service of Remembrance and Lecture is a highlight of the Holocaust Education Project, which for more than 25 years has considered the events and lessons of the Holocaust, as well as their ties to the modern world.

Addison Trail holds Career Week From March 21 to 24, the Addison Trail Guidance Department hosted its annual Career Week, in conjunction with Junior Achievement of Chicago.

Nearly 30 speakers presented during Career Week, and 61 classes and 1,188 students participated. Career fields that were showcased included insurance, auto/tech, military, music, chemistry and accounting.

Addison Job Expo to take place at ATHS On April 22, the Village of Addison and Addison Trail will host the third Addison Job Expo – and all residents are invited to attend.

The expo will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Addison Trail, 213 N. Lombard Road in Addison.

During the event, participants will have the opportunity to meet face to face with local employers and submit their résumé.

The Village of Addison is home to a wealth of successful companies and businesses, as well as a skilled and motivated workforce. The Addison Job Expo will bring employers and employees together to continue to improve the community and further develop the Addison Advantage.

The expo is an initiative of the Addison Workforce Development Committee, which is comprised of the

Village of Addison and local businesses and organizations. The focus of that group is two-fold: Collaborate to provide opportunities to train students and adults for jobs available in the area (as well as offer programs such as internships and job shadowing) Develop a directory of local businesses (including contact information, open positions and skills employees need to have) The committee’s goal is to discover the needs of employers and train local students and adults to meet those needs.

On April 21 and 22, Addison Trail will present its annual Orchesis Show. Curtain time will be 7 p.m. both evenings and will be held in the ATHS auditorium. Tickets will be sold at the door. They are $7 for adults, $5 for students and children ages 3-12, $3 with an Activity Pass and are free with a District 88 Senior Gold Card.

This year’s theme is “Beyond the Lights,” and the show will feature about 25 dance numbers that showcase an array of styles such as hiphop, jazz, lyrical, tap and modern/ contemporary. There also will be a special performance by Orchesis alumni as part of Addison Trail’s 50th anniversary celebration this school year.

One of those performers will be Addison Trail social studies teacher LeVonne Cescolini-Boyer, who graduated from Addison Trail in 1987 and has been directing the Orchesis Team for 25 years. Cescolini-Boyer said the alumni number is themed “Dance Again,” and it will feature several songs (mixed together by Addison Trail Theatre Tech Assistant and class of 2009 alumnus Alex Holod) and genres such as tap, jazz and hip-

hop (choreographed by graduates Alexandra Longo, class of 2010, and Angela Pitello, class of 2015).

Cescolini-Boyer said about 20 former Orchesis Team members will take the stage again, spanning from the class of 1985 to the class of 2015.

There also will be a PowerPoint with Orchesis photos from throughout the years, a display of posters from previous shows and appearances by former hosts.

Seniors Riley O’Donnell and Chiara Levato are Co-Presidents of Orchesis and said this year will be a show to remember.

“This year, we have a lot of elaborate sets and a large, diverse team,” O’Donnell and Levato said. “It also will be special because of the added element of the school’s 50th anniversary.”

Every aspect of the show – from the choreography to the costumes to the lighting – is run by the students, and the production involves about 100 dancers, crew members and staff members.

Twin sisters turn 94

Lexington Square residents have been close since childhood

As twin sisters, 96-year-old Tracie Banser and Yolanda (Lonnie) Buseman have been nearly inseparable for much of their lives.

“We’ve only been separated when she got married,” says Lonnie. “We didn’t dress alike any more, but we would call each other up every day.”

“We were very, very close,” recalls Tracie. “We never were alone. I went someplace, she went with me. We’d go together all the time. We just didn’t feel right going any place by ourselves.”

Tracie and Lonnie were born on Oct. 1, 1920 in Matoka, West Virginia, a small town in the southern part of the state.

When they were in their teens, they moved to the Chicago area where, as identical twins, they enjoyed trading places to see if their unsuspecting victims would notice.

Lonnie recalls the time she and Tracie were on a double date with their boyfriends at the Aragon Ballroom.

“We danced all evening, changed partners and had a great time,” says Lonnie. “They did not know who they were dancing with, at least ‘til we got home and kissed us good night (when we told them). They got very angry and said they weren’t going to ask us out again if we ever did that again.”

Tracie ended up marrying her real boyfriend from that double date, Anthony (Tony) Falduto, in 1942. They were married for 25 years until Tony passed away. Tracie later re-married – her husband of 12 years, Henry Bans-

er, died in 1981.

Tracie, who has three daughters and three granddaughters, is also proud to note that while working in the personnel office at Motorola, she sold war bonds to employees to support the country during World War II. Lonnie and Onno Buseman married in 1947 and were together for 55 years until 2002, when Onno passed away.

Lonnie, who has three daughters, two sons, and six grandchildren, was a part of history at Motorola, where she was part of the team that built the first Motorola TV that came off the production line in 1949.

Tracie and Lonnie have done just about everything together, including staying healthy. They acknowledge good genes have a lot to do with their good health and longevity, but they also credit: a very positive family life during childhood, maintaining that happiness as adults, healthy diet, staying active and having friends.

Tracie and Lonnie say they were very happy all of their young lives.

They both say their mom and dad were wonderful and that even though they were a family of nine, they did not want for anything.

The twins live in separate units at the Lexington Square Senior Living Community in Elmhurst .

Montini Catholic congratulates Foreign Language Honor Society Inductees

Montini Catholic High School in Lombard recently congratulated the newest inductees into their Spanish and French Honor Societies. The honorees are traditionally inducted each year as part of the Lasallian school’s Cultural Awareness Week festivities.

This year’s ceremony was held on March 22nd in the school’s auditorium. Members and families were welcomed by Montini’s Foreign Language Department Chair, Mrs. Roberta Raike.

Eligibility requires that students have a cumulative 3.5 GPA, including a 4.0 GPA in their specific language, as well as a commitment to taking the foreign language all four years at Montini. This year six students achieved French Honor Society status and 24 students achieved Spanish Honor Society status.

Addison Trail Softball Team hosts clinic, travels to St. Louis On March 22, members of the Addison Trail Softball Team hosted a clinic for younger players. More than 50 girls ranging in age from 8 to 13 years old participated in the event, where they learned/improved their skills in pitching, hitting, field throwing and base running.

And from March 24 to 28, members of the team traveled to the St. Louis area. During their visit, they played against Lanphier High School and won 15-4. They also were able to practice at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where they reconnected with Addison Trail alumna Nicolette Napoli (class of 2016). The team visited St. Louis Science Center, St. Louis Zoo and City Museum in St. Louis as well. On the way back to Addison, the girls toured the Lincoln Home National Historic Site and the Illinois State Capitol, where they met State Sen. Tom Cullerton.

ATHS preps for Best Buddies Friendship Walk Members of the Addison Trail Best Buddies Club will participate in the Best Buddies Friendship Walk on May 6 at Brookfield Zoo. According to its web site, the Best Buddies Friendship Walk is the No. 1 walk in the country raising awareness and funds to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The walk plays a key role in funding Best Buddies programs dedicated to one-to-one

friendships, leadership development and integrated job opportunities for individuals with IDD. Since the walk’s inception in 2009, more than 70,000 participants in 46 cities have walked to raise awareness for inclusion, friendship, leadership and opportunity for people with IDD. Addison Trail baseball team’s Villasenor posts 36 strikeouts in first 19 innings of work

Addison Trail baseball coach Mike Kennedy thought his team would be pitching-rich this season. And in the early going of the 2017 season, that certainly has been the case. While the Blazers sat at 2-2 through midlast week, stellar pitching had helped the squad stay ultra-competitive in all four games. Not included in that total was a 2-2 stalemate after 11 innings against defending West Suburban Conference Gold Division champion Hinsdale South. “We were one out away from beating them at their place—the defending conference champions,” Kennedy noted.

“They hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up. Our guys are confident and our pitching has been outstanding.” In particular, staff ace Nick Villasenor has been nearly unhittable. Through mid-last week, Villasenor had pitched in 19 innings (3 games) and had surrendered only two earned runs while striking out a staggering 36 batters in those 19 innings.

“The most impressive thing is Nick hasn’t walked anybody,” said Kennedy. “He’s been outstanding.” Kennedy also praised the mound work of Bobby Daniels. “Bobby is another guy who has been outstanding for us.

He’s given up three earned runs in 15 innings—that’s just outstanding,” he said. “Our pitching is on fire and our bats are starting to come around. It’s been a learning curve for our younger guys. We are starting to come

At the plate, sophomore shortstop Michael Scali has been effective.

“Michael is hitting real well,” said Kennedy. “He’s made the adjustment to varsity ball really well.” Ricky Perez, Simon Marinelli and Jack Kalbas also have been aiding the offensive attack for the Blazers. “Ricky has been outstanding with his bat out of the No. 3 spot,” said Kennedy.

“Simon is leading off for us and getting on base. In the first three games, Jack Kalbas was on base six times.

He’s very disciplined as a hitter. He’s a big nuisance on the base path. He’ll take second and third on you on two pitches.

While Addison Trail’s pitching has been strong, Kennedy pointed out the staff has received an extra jolt from the play of Marinelli behind the

plate.

“Simon behind the plate stops the other team’s running game,” he said.

“We talk about Simon’s offense, but he’s an outstanding defensive catcher. He works for the pitchers. He works for strikes. If a team gets on first base he throws them out stealing.”

Kennedy noted the two games the squad has lost have been instances where some defensive miscues have been costly in close situations.

“We’ve been in every game,” he said. “We lost 2-1 to Glenbard North and gave up two unearned runs in the top of the sixth. We kicked a couple balls around. We lost 4-2 to Larkin and we kicked a couple of balls. In every game we’re keeping teams in check—they aren’t scoring a lot of runs on us. The most runs we’ve given up is four. If we can continue to do that and our hitting keeps coming around, hopefully we can start stringing together some wins. We know the next two weeks we’re playing games every day and we’re getting into the heart of conference play. We’re out there throwing strikes and our guys want to play defense. It keeps the game moving. The game against Hinsdale South, we played 11 innings in two hours and 15 minutes.

Our guys can play. They put in the work in the off-season and we’re starting to see that pay off now. Our record says 2-2, but we’re a much better team than that and we’re starting to see that.”

Willowbrook baseball team splits pair of games Warriors go 7-1 through first eight contests

The Willowbrook baseball team split a pair of recent non-conference games against Andrew and Oak Park-River Forest.

In a 10-9 win over Andrew out of Tinley Park, Alec Michaelson had three hits and an RBI. MJ Ranieri had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Ben Espinoza, Jon Kelso, Mason Kamp and Dan Gusel each had a hit. Gusel, Trevor Jaloszynski and Mike Dembowski each had an RBI. Gusel’s double capped a seven-run seventh inning that won the game for Willowbrook.

10 runs over the final two innings of the game. Willowbrook had nine hits.

In addition to Gusel, Ranieri and Kamp each had a double. Kyle Ferguson drove in two runs.

Scott Kohrt was the winner in relief. He threw the final two innings and allowed no hits and no earned runs. Jack Hines started and went 3 innings. Will Hines pitched two innings.

Willowbrook then dropped a 3-2 West Suburban Conference crossover contest to Oak Park-River Forest.

Oak Park led 2-1 after the first inning and 3-1 after five.

The Warriors had six hits in the game and made two errors. Kelso went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Ferguson had a hit and an RBI. Ranieri had an RBI. Dembowski had a hit, as did Gusel. Kamp went 1-for-1.

Dembowski had a double and Kelso had a triple.

Ferguson, Gusel and Kelso each stole a base.

Jack Nilles took the loss. He went four innings and allowed only five hits while striking out five. Vince Ruchala pitched the final two innings and struck out two.

In the JV game against Oak Park, Willowbrook led 9-1 after two innings on its way to a 10-3 win in three innings.

Espinoza had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Nilles had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Marshall McDonell, Nick Sabatino, Kamp, Jonn Taylor and JT Ceh also each had an RBI. Nilles doubled in the game.

Eric Gunst was the winning pitcher. He went two innings and struck out one. Ryan Carperos and Mike Cameron followed on the mound in the three-inning game.

Addison Trail softball team embarks on fun southern Illinois road trip

The Addison Trail softball team brought back a fun spring break story to tell.

The Blazers embarked on an eventful spring-break trip to southern Illinois that ended up being loaded with activity on and off the field.

The Blazers started out the trip with a win against Springfield Lanphier High School.

The Blazers were then rained out in a Saturday doubleheader at Mascoutah. Sunday was spent sightseeing in St. Louis.

The Monday of spring break saw Addison Trail practice at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

“They have an unbelievable softball facility there,” said Olson.

“They have an indoor only softball facility that is connected to their stadium. It’s fantastic and the school was super-accommodating.”

Addison Trail also was rained out in a doubleheader against Roxana.

The team ended up back in the Springfield area where it took a tour of the state capitol in Springfield and met with Illinois Senator Tom Cullerton, who is based out of Villa Park (23rd district).

The team then dropped a game to downstate Morton (not to be confused with the Morton that plays in Addison Trail’s division of the West Suburban Conference).

“We took it on the chin against Morton,” said Olson. “I think we ran out of steam.”

Olson said the entire trip, despite a lack of games, was a major success.

“It turned into a Springfield trip,” he said. “Nonetheless, it paid off. It was great for team chemistry and team bonding. The girls had a great time. We always have plans B and C in place in case of the weather. We wish the weather was better, but there still was a lot of moving around. We made sure there was not a lot of dead time. St. Louis is a great city. We had some warmer weather but we couldn’t catch a break with the rain. The other schools were great. We went out to dinner with the girls from Lanphier and Morton had a beautiful facility.”

Olson has been pleased with a variety of things in the early part of the season. “I love the attitude and the effort,” he said. “We have no shortage of effort and good approach. We only lost three girls from last year, so we have quite a few back. We started two freshmen last year, so we’re still pretty young. We have a lot of juniors and sophomores and we have a nice senior class.”

Addison Trail has been playing without the likes of multi-sport athlete Nicci Scorza and outfielder Katie Lacni.

Olson lauded the recent play of Vincenza Zaccaro, Alyssa Pham, Jessica Bach, Marie Baumgartner, Sophia Hawkins, Ally Pohlad, Valentia Pentrelli, Gianna Fugarino and Giana Trippiedi.

“Vincenza has been ripping the heck out of the ball,” he said.

“Alyssa was hurt most of last year and has come back and is really striking the ball. Jessica is a senior captain and has quietly been there three years at third base. There’s been a couple games over the years where she hasn’t been there because of something like an AP test and we missed her. You realize how valuable her leadership is.

“Marie is a four-year player. Sophia and Ally were with us as freshmen, so that was kind of a baptism by fire. Valentina is a freshman who is splitting time at first with Gianna Fugarino. And Gianna Trippiedi is helping us at catcher. There are a lot of familiar faces who are growing on the field from last year to this year. The good thing is we were able to hit the ground running at the start of practice.”

Just after returning from the trip, the Blazers dropped a 9-8 nonconference game to Rolling Meadows.

“The weather has not been a champion of softball so far this season,” said Olson, echoing what all area outdoor sports coaches have been saying in regards to lack of outdoor practice time and game availability of late due to the rough weather.

The Blazers were scheduled to play Larkin, Niles West and Proviso West this week in non-conference games.

Addison Trail boys volleyball team downs Hinsdale South

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team recorded a recent 25-21, 25-15 win over Hinsdale South in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

The win upped Addison Trail to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference.

One area of recent improvement for the Blazers of late has been on the defensive end. “Our defense has really picked up in the last week,” said Addison Trail coach Chad Grant late last week. “We have some strong returning passers and some new players who are getting acclimated to serve-receive at the varsity

level. I expect us to become stronger with this as the season goes on. We have the size to be a strong blocking team.”

Grant has pinpointed serving as a must work-on situation for this team. “We have a lot of work to do from the service line,” he said. “We need to serve a lot tougher and be more consistent.”

Jacob Grygo was cited for strong play at the setter’s position in the early going of the season.

“Jacob is doing a great job running our offense,” said Grant. “I am very confident in the setter position.”

Grant also has been thrilled with the way his team has rallied after injuries to key players. “I am impressed with the ability of our players to make adjustments,” he said.

“We have played all our matches missing two or three starters due to

downstate in the 4-by-200 and 4-by400,” he said.

Senior Luis Vargas is showing good improvements in the 1,600.

“Luis has been steadily improving and will be a factor in every meet,” said Kelsay.

Addison Trail has around 75 athletes in the program. “That is the most ever,” said Kelsay. “The underclassmen have shown strong development during indoor season and should score very well at the frosh-soph level.”

Kelsay is looking forward to the outdoor season. “The indoor conference meet was a disappointment, but the team has rebounded very well,” he said. “Our goal is to make strides each week and peak at the conference and state-qualifying meets.

Hopefully we will have several individuals and a couple relays make it downstate.”

Alex Murillo, a 6-7 middle blocker, is out until May with a hand injury. “We are a work in progress right now,” said Grant. “We expect to be a very competitive team come playoff time. We are preparing as if Alex will be out for the season, but he will be a huge addition if he returns on time.”

The Willowbrook boys track team has some strong momentum on its side heading into the outdoor season.

The Warriors closed out the indoor season at the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet where Casey King, a senior captain, won the 800-meter title.

Willowbrook took fifth as a team.

Coach TJ Artman also is excited about the size of his roster, which numbers near 70 this season.

Artman noted the team’s 800 runners will be competitive this season, while field events also are a strong

suit.

“We have seniors leading the way in the field events with some lower-level guys working to break into the lineup,” he said.

The coach also is pleased with the prospects for his relay teams. “We have a group of guys that has been relaying with each other for several seasons now, even on the lower levels,” said Artman.

In addition to King, Willowbrook also is led by captains Will Schuller (hurdles), Lucas Olson (throws) and Zach Walenga (throws).

“We are working toward improving our WSC finish. We are not hap-

py about a fifth-place score,” said Artman. “We’re super positive. We have a team filled with guys who really enjoy the sport of track and field.”

Willowbrook softball The Willowbrook softball team started the season with non-conference losses to Plainfield Central, Riverside-Brookfield, Morris and Herscher.

“We are hitting well, but leaving a lot of runners stranded,” said Willowbrook coach Rachel Karos. “Defensively we are getting hit hard. We need to find a way to get outs.”

Fenton softball’s Geraci collects 100th career hit Bison baseball team edges IC Catholic Prep

Fenton softball player Jenna Geraci achieved a memorable milestone recently.

Geraci collected her 100th career hit in Fenton’s recent Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division loss to Wheaton Academy.

In other recent action the Bison lost 7-6 to Bloom Township in non-conference action.

Through five games, Geraci was leading the team in hitting at .500, while Isa Lozada and Keila Lozada both were hitting .333.

“Isa is a sophomore who has really been looking good through all our practices and in the early games,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello. “She has a great chance to be one of the best players we’ve had in recent memory.”

Overall, Mello has seen positives at the plate. “We have had a lot of really good at-bats early in the season.

For the most part, we’ve looked pretty good at the plate.”

Mello noted Fenton must continue to work on the defensive side of things. “Too many errors have put a lot of stress on our pitchers,” he said.

Speaking of pitching, Mello lauded the efforts of senior Taylor Spizzirri and freshman Gianna Mendoza in the circle.

“They combined to walk only six batters through the first five games,” he said. “They are throwing lots of strikes, which is why we need our defense to improve.”

Fenton was scheduled to play Timothy Christian, IC Catholic Prep and Fenwick earlier this week.

“The rain has really made it difficult to settle into a routine,” said Mello. “With so much rain, it has also affected practices because it’s difficult to find much indoor time to practice.”

Fenton baseball The Fenton baseball team used a big fifth inning to record a recent 6-5 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division victory over IC Catholic Prep at Redmond Park in Bensenville.

nings and 4-2 after four innings, but used a five-run fifth inning to pull ahead for good.

The Bison had 10 hits in the game.

Fenton badminton The Fenton girls badminton team has a win this season against Plainfield Central.

Leading the way for Fenton is a group of seniors in Amanda Perry, Sheeza Anwar, Rimsha Naseer, Kelly Kuman, Kelly Keane and Iram Hameeduddin.

At No. 1 doubles, Naseer and Anwar had five wins through late last week. Perry and Keane had three wins at No. 2 doubles, while Kuman and Hameeduddin had three wins at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Perry had three wins at the No. 1 position. Kuman had three wins, as did Anwar.

“This group has shown tremendous leadership and is the core of the team,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings.

Hastings also lauded the play of juniors Jeniffer Reyes and Galilea Rivera at No. 4 doubles.

Sophomores Sammen Naseer and Monse Valois had three victories as a doubles team.

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team returned from its spring trip to South Carolina and fared well in a recent three-game stretch.

The Knights opened last week with a 9-3 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Fenton.

IC Catholic Prep overcame a 2-1 early deficit by scoring three runs in the third inning and later blew the game open with four runs in the sixth inning.

The Knights had 10 hits in the game.

Trey Morris went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Aus-

tin Reed went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. John Hoffman was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Matt Sutton had a hit and an RBI, as did Brendan Russ and Joey Salvi. Ryan Malek walked twice and scored a run. CJ West walked, scored a run and had an RBI, while Griffen Eichhorn had a hit and an RBI. Sutton doubled in the game and Morris had a triple and a sacrifice fly. Reed stole two bases, while Hoffman and Morris each stole one.

Russ was the winning pitcher. He went six innings and allowed only five hits and one earned run while striking out seven and walking one.

Hoffman pitched the seventh inning

and struck out two.

IC Catholic Prep followed that up with an 11-1 MSC crossover win against St. Edward. The Knights used a six-run fifth inning that helped to enact the 10-run rule in the sixth.

IC Catholic Prep had 11 hits.

Sutton went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Morris had a hit and two RBI. Reed went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Russ had a hit and an RBI. Hoffman went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. West had a hit and an RBI. Michael Hoffman scored a run and had an RBI. Amari Reed had a hit and scored two runs. Seven Knights players had at least one hit.
