Former Addison resident and Fighting Illini football player and Fulbright Scholar Stephen Steinhaus (Ardmore, Fullerton, Indian Trail, Addison Trail) is opening a brand new Free School for 13-16 year old pupils in Solihull, England this April. Solihull Academy will open with 30 9th grade students (ages 1314) drawn from across all 15 Solihull secondary schools. It will open fully in September 2018 with up to 110 students in grades 9 – 11.

Solihull Academy offers an alternative solution for students whose mainstream education is simply not working for a range of different reasons.

Steinhaus, who grew up in Addison and graduated from Addison Trail in 1991, graduated from the U of I with a degree in Teaching of English. He then earned an MPHIL in English Literature at The Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon and an MA in Creative Writing from The University of Hawaii.

Visitors from China come to ITJH

Five middle school students visiting from China spent the day at Indian Trail Junior High School on Tuesday, Feb 27. The visiting group from Huantai Shi Ji (Century) Middle School were accompanied by their assistant principal along with an interpreter. The students followed the schedule of ITJHS 8th grader Sidney Zhao (front row, far right), sitting in on classes with her.

International Fest Week held at Addison Trail From Feb. 12 to 16, Addison Trail hosted its annual International Fest Week, during which 26 presenters spoke to more than 3,400 students in 188 classes about their travels and experiences from throughout the world.

Through those presentations, students were able to learn about many

different cultures. Addison Trail partnered with Junior Achievement of Chicago to coordinate and organize the speakers.

During the week, Addison Trail’s International Club hosted a Dec-ADoor event, where resource classes chose a country and decorated their

door to represent that location/culture.

The goal was to show that Addison Trail encompasses many nationalities, but is one Blazer Nation. The decorations were judged, and Jessica Sokolowski’s class won with its representation of Italy. As the winners, those students will receive a pizza

party.

International Fest Week culminated with the school’s annual International Dance Show, which featured 17 dances that represented various countries/ cultures. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to UNICEF.

College names winners in American Dream Fellowship Competition Program dedicated to first-generation college students Lillian Rizo-Dubois, a Prairie Ridge High School senior from Crystal Lake, became the firstplace winner of the inaugural Elmhurst College American Dream Fellowship Competition, a scholarship contest that supports and celebrates first-generation college students.

Addison March 1 Police said Claudia G. Alonso-Hernandez, 33, of Addison, had an original warrant t out of the Addison Police Department for endangerment of a child.

Police said Cristian Roman, 42, of Chicago, had a warrant out of the Pike County Sheriff’s Department.

Feb. 28 Oscar Salazar, 29, of Addison, was charged with aggravated resisting arrest in the 1600 block of W. Lake at around 8:31 p.m. Police said that during a minor traffic stop, it was determined that passenger Salazar had numerous active warrants. While being placed in handcuffs, Salazar resisted arrest by pulling away from officers, according to police.

Feb. 27 Luis Garcia, 35, of Addison, was charged with DUI and no valid driver’s license subsequent to a traffic stop near Kennedy and Friendship at around 7:39 p.m.

A 25-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery in the 1-100 block of W. Nevada Ave., Glendale Heights, at around 8:18 p.m. Police said that during an in-

vestigation of domestic battery, the Glendale Heights Police Department was requested to attempt to locate the suspect and take him into custody. The Glendale Heights Police Department located and transported him to the Addison Police Department where he was processed for striking a victim in Addison with his vehicle, knocking victim to the ground.

Feb. 25 Edward L. Giese Jr., 55, of Addison, was charged with battery at a restaurant in the 1400 block of W. Lake St. at around 3:23 p.m. Police said officers responded to the restaurant for a call of a subject who was asked to leave, and was attempting to enter a vehicle in the parking lot that was not his. According to police, Giese Jr. threw red wood chips at a police officer, striking the officer on the legs and vest.

Feb. 24 A 38-year-old Addison man was charged with domestic battery in the 700 block of W. Lake Manor Drive at around 8:17 p.m.

Jan. 23 A 39-year-old Addison woman was charged with domestic battery in the 300 block of W. Army Trail at around 1:04 p.m.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a 16-year-old male Lake Park High School student is now facing two felony charges for a threat he allegedly sent via Snapchat directed at the school. The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing, where Judge Robert Anderson ordered that he be released from custody and placed on home confinement until at least March 12, 2018. In all, the juvenile has been charged with two counts of Disorderly Conduct, a Class 4 Felony. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 12, 2018.

Women’s Club offers scholarship opportunity The Women’s Club of Addison will be accepting applications now through April 4, 2018, for two $1,500 scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic school year. Female graduating seniors who have been accepted at an accredited two or four-year college or university are eligible. Candidates may attend any high school, but must be a current resident of Addison.

Scholarships will be awarded based on scholastic achievement, school involvement, community service, and financial need. Applications are currently available at the Addison Trail High School guidance department and the Addison Village Hall information desk.

Decisions will be made mid-April and the scholarships will be awarded at a special Women’s Club of Addison event in May 2018.

Nybo-sponsored Lethal Violence Order of Protection Act approved by Senate In light of the growing number of mass shootings and perpetrators of senseless violence in the United States, State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) is cosponsoring a public safety measure to prevent potentially dangerous individuals from self-harm or

endangering others with a firearm— approved by the Illinois Senate on Feb. 28.

“In some cases of these tragic shootings we’ve seen, family members and people who knew the shooter noticed signs of unstable or reckless

behavior,” said Nybo. “The Lethal Violence Order of Protection Act creates an official process and outlet for anyone to speak up, identify and prevent a troubled individual from hurting themselves or committing a horrifying act. It’s my hope we can begin to stop future tragedies before they start.”

House Bill 772 establishes the Lethal Violence Order of Protection Act, which allows family members, acquaintances or law enforcement to petition the court to identify and issue an ex parte order for an individual who

poses an immediate and present danger of causing personal injury to one’s self or another with a firearm. The Act will establish a number of factors and types of evidence that the court must consider before issuing a lethal violence order of protection.

The legislation aims to help identify individuals who display signs of dangerous behavior and remove their FOID card and any firearms in their possession prior to a possible shooting. It also outlines suspicious behavior that may not be covered under tra-

ditional protective orders.

“With help from the public in identifying dangerous individuals, this initiative allows for law enforcement to temporarily remove the individual’s FOID card and firearms until the court determines they are no longer a present danger to others,” said Nybo. “It’s a preventative measure that could save lives in Illinois.”

Following its approval by the Senate, the legislation now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Ending on a high note Timothy Christian girls basketball IC Catholic Prep’s Joey Bianchini gets team places two on all-state team another state wrestling championship

IC Catholic Prep senior Joey Bianchini leaves the wrestling program with two state titles.

He also leaves as a wrestler who helped build a Knights program that in its short timeframe of existence found itself wrestling in the Class 1A dual-team state finals this season.

“It’s been quite a wild ride to say the least,” said Bianchini. “We started as a small team my freshman year and built the program off that. It’s been an amazing experience. I accomplished most of what I wanted to accomplish and we made state as a team. It’s been crazy.”

Bianichini said the minute he hit IC Catholic Prep as a freshman he wanted success. “My career has been a success,” he said. “I have never not been hungry for more success. My goal coming in was to win four state championships. I got two. I’m happy with my highschool career. I’d love to do it all over again, but it’s over and done with. I had a great career.”

The last two years, he said, are filled with great memories. “They are very special,” he said. “Freshman year I didn’t get what I wanted and sophomore year it happened again,” he said. “Junior and senior year I worked hard every day to get what I wanted. It’s extremely special.”

Bianchini, who finished with 150 wins in high school, said repeating as state champion took some work. “There was a little pressure this year,” he said. “It was a little more than last year. I had a target on my back because I was the top guy out there. I took it one match at a time.

I didn’t think about anything else but my opponent. It was one at a time. They come at you one at a time and you have to get it done.”

As for the future, Bianchini has not made a decision on his college future. “I’m uncommitted, but I’m wrestling for sure in college,” he said.

Bianchini will take part this weekend in the Illinois-Indiana dual meet in Springfield that pits the state champions of both states against each other in a dual-meet format. He also is continuing his training at the Izzy Style club.

Looking back, Bianchini said another key memory he will take with him is the growth of the Knights’ wrestling program.

“Freshman year we had like six or seven guys in the program,” he said. “We had faith in the program for sure. As a freshman, I didn’t think we’d be in the dual-team state finals my senior year, but we had the work ethic and the ability and we made it happen.”

Strube, Schuringa earn spots after helping lead Trojans to sectional title game

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team’s successful season was punctuated by the recent announcement Jordyn Strube and Olivia Schuringa made the Class 2A allstate honorable-mention team.

Strube and Schuringa helped the Trojans go 20-10, finish 8-4 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play, win a Class 2A regional title and advance to a Class 2A sectional title game.

“The fact we won regionals made our season special,” said Strube. “We played very well. We played some close games and won some close games we weren’t supposed to. The regional title and everything else

and keep things under control. Last year I had some crazy passes. This year I was more under control.”

Strube noted the all-state honorable-mention award she received with Olivia Schuringa has strong meaning. “I didn’t expect to receive that,” she said. “I’m only a junior and to receive that is a nice accomplishment that I’m thankful for.”

Strube, who would like to play the sport in college, will be one of many returning players for the Trojans next season.

“Almost everybody is coming back,” she said. “Besides Olivia and Emily graduating, the two freshmen will be sophomores and they were big contributors. Our big thing is we need to get our turnovers under control and stop turning the ball over.

Turning the ball over during important times leads to extra points for the other team. We lost several games because of that. If we keep working hard, we can be just as good as this year. We’re so excited for next year.”

Strube said the team’s attitude played a big role in what was accomplished. “We all got along very well,” she said. “We all worked very well together and that makes everything work out well. When we got into the post, our post players caught the passes, especially Liv (Olivia), Emily (DeBoer) and Hannah (Schuringa).”

Strube noted the Trojans also excelled thanks to the contributions of freshmen Sureya Alex and Hannah Schuringa. “The two freshman helped us big-time,” she said.

Strube said she had an inkling this year’s group could have success. “I definitely expected us to do well,” she said. “I’m happy we did as well as I expected.”

On the individual front, Strube said passing improvement helped her take the next step. “I got better at passing,” she said. “My ball-handling skills also improved. There were times I had to take the ball up

I was supposed to and did what I wanted to accomplish. It’s a sense of accomplishment, pride and a sense of happiness. I finally got there and put all that hard work in and it finally paid off. It’s an unspeakable moment.”

Jessen, headed to Northwestern to wrestle, said the state title weighed on his mind a lot this season. He finished in the top three in the state his previous three seasons, including a runner-up finish as a junior.

“There is no doubt it was on my mind,” he said. “I knew I wouldn’t end my season without a state title.”

And Jessen did it without losing a match this season while wrestling an extremely demanding schedule.

“Going undefeated definitely is a tough thing to do,” he said. “It’s a nice accomplishment to get done and it’s something I feel really good about.”

Jessen also surpassed 200 wins for his high-school career. “I never thought that could happen,” he said. “Freshman year, stepping in there, I never thought I would be in the 200-win club, no sir.”

Jessen said what he’s been able to accomplish the last four years was not a singular endeavor. “A lot of people helped me whether it was coaches, teammates and especially my family,” he said. “Everybody helped out. There were a lot of huge contributors. A lot of people devoted a great amount of time and effort to get me where I am at right now.”

Jessen admitted going into Champaign a few weeks ago carried a tad bit of pressure. “There was a little pressure,” he said. “But I went in there confident and I was going to leave no stone unturned and when it came to the state finals

I was going to lay it out there and hopefully get the title at the end.”

When Jessen reached the final match, he said nerves did not creep into the picture. “The final match I was more laidback,” he said. “I was more confident in what I needed to do. I laid it out there.”

Just because the high-school season is over doesn’t mean the competitions stop for Jessen. This week he will be part of the Illinois vs.

Indiana state duals in Springfield, an event that pits state champions from both states against each other. Next week, he’ll represent Team USA at the Pittsburgh Classic and then it’s off to Cedar Falls, Iowa for nationals.

“I just love wrestling,” said Jessen. “I can’t get enough of it. With college coming up I want to compete with the guys I will be competing against from other states.”

Jessen took little time off between the state finals and training for this upcoming string of events.

“I took a week off and started back up with a couple practices and lifting,” he said. “It was a quick turnaround. I don’t need much time off.

I don’t know what to do when I have time off.”

Jessen, who would like to study economics or pre-med at Northwestern, did what he did this year after suffering an ankle injury during the Willowbrook football season. Jessen was a key contributor to the football team’s success this season.

“I came off football where I had a severely sprained ankle and some torn tendons,” he said. “It healed itself and I went full throttle. This has been amazing. We had a great year in football and then I had an amazing year in wrestling and winning the title puts the cherry on top of my high-school career.”

Willowbrook girls badminton team has experience on its side Warriors return six conference medalists

The Willowbrook girls badminton team is not hurting in the experience department.

The Warriors have six conference medalists back from a 2017 team that went 13-7-1 overall and took second in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 4-1 mark.

Back for the Warriors are junior Hanna Konrath, seniors Hailey Vogt and Millie Zachariah, junior Charlotte Dewyer, senior Luz Alcala and junior Grace Wachholz.

Konrath is a returning state qualifier, while Wachholz is a returning conference champion. Konrath, Vogt, Zachariah, Dewyer and Alcala are returning conference medalists.

Key newcomers to the team include seniors Leah Gensel, Taylor Scheelk and Leksi Daskiewicz, along with juniors Katie Karcz, Sydney Wilson and Sania Irfan.

“The strength of this team relies on its experience,” said Willowbrook coach Brandon Murphy. “We have

more than 10 girls with varsity experience returning to the lineup. We will be relying on that experience to carry us through the ups and downs that come within a season. Many of the varsity girls have been in big matches and know what they need to do to be successful. This team knows how to work hard and have fun while doing it. It’s going to be another fun and successful season.”

Murphy said there will be good balance between his doubles and singles lineups this season. “With many young ladies having experience in both, I feel confident the girls who will represent us in singles and doubles will be successful.”

Individually, Murphy noted Konrath has been hard at work during the offseason. “She is motivated for another state-final run,” he said.

Dewyer and Wilson also will help on the singles front. “Charlotte is another junior who has put in a lot of work since last season,” said Murphy. “I’m excited to see her compete with the state’s best. She is going to open some eyes this season. I’m also interested to see Sydney’s impact on the team. She was at the top

of the JV team last year and won the conference championship. In the first week of practice, she already is showing she has what it takes to be successful at the varsity level.”

Murphy said the team will benefit from the doubles experience Zachariah, Vogt and Alcala bring to the table. “They are ready for their senior seasons,” he said.

And Wachholz, Murphy noted, is poised to make another strong post-

season run. “Grace is a returning conference champion who knows how to compete and win,” he said.

“She is a tough competitor who is working on repeating as the conference champion and making it downstate this season.”

With the amount of experience returning, Murphy said team chemistry will not be a problem. “The team is just that, a team,” he said. “They work well together. They know when

it is time to be serious and when it is time to be relaxed.”

Murphy added the team would like to improve its standing in a pair of areas this season. “They are looking to leave their mark,” he said.

“Last season we finished second in conference and second in sectionals.

They are working hard to change that result.”

Fenton’s Fischer swims in state meet Fenton boys basketball team loses in regionals

Fenton’s Nik Fischer recently competed in the IHSA boys state swimming finals at Evanston Township High School.

Fischer finished 38th in the state in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.39.

Fischer qualified for state in the 100 out of the Deerfield sectional and is Fenton’s first swimmer to qualify for the state meet in many years, the school noted.

Fischer also was a medalist at the sectional in the backstroke where he established a new school record.

The 200 medley relay team of Fischer, Conrad Oberski, Matt Janovsky and Lucas Feddersen also were medalists and broke a school record.

Also at the sectional, Matt McElroy, Jason Gasior, Maciej Sporna, Jordan Loyola and Paul Sofineti contributed key points for the team.

Fenton finished eighth at the sectional with 69.5 points.

At the conference meet, Fischer, Oberski, Janovsky and Feddersen had two medal-winning third-place finishes.

Fischer won the 100 backstroke and took third in the 100. Feddersen and Oberski were second and third respectively in the 50 and medalists in their other events.

The drought is over.

The Willowbrook boys basketball team recorded a recent 61-56 win over West Suburban Conference Gold Division foe Hinsdale South to win the Class 4A Hinsdale South regional title in Darien.

It was Willowbrook’s first regional title since 2004.

The Warriors advanced to the Class 4A Glenbard East sectional this past Tuesday in Lombard where they faced Naperville North.

If Willowbrook won that game, it will play for the Glenbard East sectional title Friday in Lombard against either Benet Academy or Bartlett.

Willowbrook had split the regular-season series with Hinsdale South, winning at home and losing in Darien.

Willowbrook is the No. 5 seed in the Glenbard East sectional. Hinsdale South was the No. 4 seed. Naperville North is the No. 1 seed, while Benet is the No. 2 seed and Bartlett is the No. 12 seed.

The Warriors also will have four individuals competing in the sectional round of the Class 4A state 3-point shooting contest this week at Glenbard East. Willowbrook’s Scott Tumilty won the Hinsdale South regional portion of the contest by sinking 13 three-pointers. Matas Masys and Sikander Zafar each made 12, while Levi Bentsen made 10.

Willowbrook advanced to the regional title game after recording a 71-46 win against Metea Valley in the semifinals.

Addison Trail boys basketball The Addison Trail boys basketball team wrapped up its 2017-2018 season after a 51-44 loss to Downers Grove South in a quarterfinal game of the Class 4A Addison Trail regional.

Addison Trail’s Connor Palesch advanced in the Class 4A three-point shooting contest. He’ll shoot in the sectional round this week at Glenbard East in Lombard.

Rothmund at IllinoisSpringfield Willowbrook graduate Michael Rothmund is off to another strong start on the baseball field for the University of Illinois at Springfield squad.

Through the first nine games of the season, Rothmund was hitting .364 with 12 hits in 33 at-bats. He has scored 13 runs and also had five doubles, four home runs and 11 RBI. Rothmund had a slugging percentage of .879 and an on-base percentage of .500 thanks in part to nine walks on his record.

The senior first baseman is coming off a 2017 season where he was a D2CCA second-team all-region pick after belting 24 home runs to go with 68 RBI. He led the conference last year in home runs and RBI, as well as slugging percentage (.789).

Fenton was the No. 19 seed in the Class 4A Riverside-Brookfield sectional, while Proviso West was the No. 13 seed.

Fenton’s Amari Reed was one of four individuals to advance out of the Fenton regional in the Class 4A state 3-point shooting contest.

Reed will compete in the sectional round this week for an opportunity to advance to the state finals. Reed will shoot at the Riverside-Brookfield sectional.
