Health Department supports new Crisis Intervention Coordinator position Will offer training to police officers throughout DuPage By Dee Longfellow For The Elmhurst Independent
Last week, the Independent learned that the DuPage County Health Department had offered its endorsement of the plan spawned by the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association to appoint a County Crisis Intervention Coordinator to act as a liaison between law enforcement, mental health service providers and residents who are experiencing a mental health crisis. The Police Chiefs Association recently approved a resolution supporting a coordinator of training for mental health crisis intervention in response to an increasing number of police interactions with individuals in mental health crisis. This is not only a cost-effective measure to help people with mental health issues, but also will maximize the public resources already available that those in need may not know about. “This new Crisis Intervention Coordinator is needed in DuPage County to strengthen our health care safety net to insure the health of all residents,” said Karen Ayala, executive director at the DuPage County Health Department. “The Health Department strongly believes this kind of collaboration is the best way to serve the health care needs of
our residents.” Ayala said the coordinator will train police officers in the Crisis Intervention Team Model and will make training available throughout the County. The new position will be sup-
ported jointly by the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association and the Health Department. According to Ayala, the Health Department has been an active partner with the Mental
Illness Court Alternative Program (MICAP), a joint venture with 18th Judicial Circuit Court. MICAP has held 27 graduation ceremonies for nearly 500 individuals, who were experiencing behavioral health symptoms
while incarcerated but were successfully directed from the judicial system into MICAP as an alternative. The MICAP graduates have obtained employment and increased self-sufficiency, Ayala said.
