Last night, Waheed turned herself in to authorities and was released after posting the necessary $1,000, or 10%, of her $10,000 bond.

It is alleged prior to December 19, 2016, Waheed collected signatures on petitions for her to apply as a candidate for the COD Board of Trustees. It is further alleged that at some point in time, Waheed made photocopies of two completed signature portions of the petitions and then completed the candidate information by hand. It is further alleged that she then notarized those petitions as authentic. It is alleged that Waheed then filed these petitions, along with the originals, with the proper COD authorities. Her alleged scheme was uncovered during a hearing on an objection that was filed against her petitions.

Waheed is charged with two counts of Forgery, two counts of Issuing a Forged Document and four counts of Perjury. All offenses are a Class 3 Felony. Waheed’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 12, 2017, in front of Judge Liam Brennan.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove her or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The state is able to rely on the Internal Revenue Service and all of its assets to administer the state’s tax codes,” Kaeding said.

When the federal death tax is killed, the high cost of enforcing the state version likely will mean it costs more to enforce than it would bring in.

“The administrative cost of this

tax would be larger than the revenue generated,” she said.

The tax brings Illinois about $300 million, but the Tax Foundation estimates that it will cost the state about $1.5 billion in lost GDP. There are currently a number of bills in Springfield that would repeal part or all of Illinois’ death tax. Including Illinois, there are 14 states that still have an estate tax.

Trump changes not altering Illinois school plan Illinois News Network President Donald Trump’s new interpretation of federal education policy, to give more authority to individual states, isn’t changing Illinois’ new school master plan.

Illinois always planned to flex its own muscles over its own schools.

Jackie Matthews, a spokeswoman for the Illinois State Board of Education, said Trump’s decision to change how his administration interprets the Every Student Succeeds Act isn’t changing Illinois’ school master plan.

“The (new) federal regulations won’t affect the path that Illinois is on,” Matthews said. “From the beginning of this process, we’ve been looking to the intent of the law and the letter of the law.”

The state’s new master plan will dictate to local schools how Illinois measures everything from test

grades, to school performance, to how different students are learning.

The Trump administration’s new guidance is to let states use their own measuring sticks, rather than strict national regulations.

“Our stakeholders are clear. A system based on punitive measures or based on the rankings of schools doesn’t serve the best needs of educators, and schools, and communities,” Matthews said.

Illinois’ new master plan will change how schools are ‘graded’ by the state.

Local schools will see pieces of Illinois’ new master plan when students return in the fall.

The Illinois State Board of Education unanimously approved the plan Wednesday. Illinois will submit it to the U.S. Department of Education early next month.

AT Science Olympiad Team qualifies for state The Addison Trail Science Olympiad Team has qualified to compete in the State Tournament, which will take place on April 29 at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The team earned a bid to State after earning 13 medals in 23 events and finishing in 5th place at the College of DuPage Regional on March 11.

Hospital team on mission to help Syrian refugees in Lebanon When we see images of children injured in the war in Syria or displaced with their families to refugee camps in neighboring countries, it’s too easy to feel a moment of sympathy and go on to the next news story.

It’s quite a different matter when you’ve met these families, says Khalid Badwan, MD, a urologist with Elmhurst Clinic, who will go on his second medical mission to Lebanon in April.

“This (dislocation of millions) is the largest humanitarian disaster since World War II,” said Dr. Badwan. “Going there helps you put a face on the problem. (These refugees) affect you because they remind you of yourself. They had normal lives. Many were even well-to-do.

Now they have nothing.”

The April mission is sponsored by the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), which pays for rental use of special medical equipment (such as a laser machine) and space for treating patients. The mission’s volunteer doctors and nurses cover their own transportation and lodging.

Most of the 18 participants in the April mission are healthcare professionals affiliated with Elmhurst Hospital. Specialties represented include cardiology, nephrology, vascular and urological surgery, hematology, emergency medicine, general practice, critical care and anesthesiology.

Elmhurst Hospital has contributed $5,000 toward medication, surgery and catheterization lab expenses, a sum that’s being matched by its medical staff.

“We’re glad to help defray the mission’s medical care expenses,” said Pamela Dunley, President & CEO, Elmhurst Hospital. “And we’re offering paid time off for the Elmhurst nurses who are part of the group. We want to support the volunteer causes of our physicians and other staff. The

(mission participants) are excited about doing this. They even started a crowdfunding website to raise more money for medical supplies.”

“SAMS mission teams used to travel to Syria to treat war injuries,” said Dr. Badwan. “That’s become too dangerous. Now, they typically travel to Jordan, Turkey or Lebanon to treat refugees with more routine problems such as diabetes or hypertension.

Lebanon has the greatest need. It’s a very small country that’s been flooded with about 1.5 million refugees.”

Dr. Badwan expects to treat people with common urological problems such as kidney stones and enlarged prostates, but on his previous mission he also removed shrapnel from a Syrian man’s bladder.

Another member of the April mission team is kidney specialist Madhavi Ryali, MD, of Nephrology Associates of Northern Illinois.

“I’ll be providing general medical services, and because I’m a woman I may be asked to provide care specific to women’s health,” said Dr. Ryali, who is coordinating the April visit.

As a mother of two children under 5, Dr. Ryali says she was especially drawn to this mission because of the number of children affected.

“This mission is special to me because it will display a solidarity of sorts with my medical colleagues who have bravely been caring for patients in besieged areas,” she said.

“Usually medical teams are exempt from attack, but in these situations, they’ve been targeted.

“It is such a desperate situation internationally. The mission can only scratch the surface, but we also can try to raise awareness of the refugees’ plight.”

March 8-March 9 • Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 1-100 block of S. Illinois. Police said that between 7 p.m.

March 8 and 6 a.m. March 9, an unknown suspect entered an unsecured vehicle parked in a driveway and stole keys and a fire extinguisher.

• Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of Ovaltine. Police said that between 8 p.m. March 8 and 7:15 a.m. March 9, an unknown suspect entered a vehicle parked in the lot and stole checks, headphones and a gym bag containing clothing.

• A stolen vehicle was reported in the 1400 block of Ovaltine. Police said that between 6:45 p.m. March 8 and 7:16 a.m. March 9, an unknown suspect stole a vehicle that was parked unsecured in the parking lot. The keys were left in the vehicle along with a backpack containing a computer and other personal items.

The vehicle was located in Elmhurst; however, the backpack and computer were still missing.

Elmhurst College will be screening a documentary about a renowned Chicago art collective on Friday, March 31 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Schaible Science Center, Illinois Hall, on the campus of Elmhurst College elmhurst.edu/campusmap).

The documentary, called Hairy Who and The Chicago Imagists is an engrossing and lavishly illustrated production about a dynamic group of artists who, beginning in the 1960s and spanning two decades, thumbed their noses at the art establishment, producing works that were outrageous, aggressive, humorous and significant.

All of the Hairy Who’s founding members, including Suellen Rocca, Elmhurst College’s curator and director of exhibitions, are still exhibiting and have become powerful inspirations for a whole new generation of artists, including Jeff Koons and Chris Ware.

After the screening, participants are invited to walk over to the A.C. Buehler Library and explore the College’s unparalleled collection of Chicago Imagist and Abstractionist Art. Local men vie to beat Guinness World Record for pull-ups Proceeds will fund memorial to Elmhurst fallen soldier Joe Vanek

Two very patriotic men — Nick Janowitz, owner of Patriot Sports and Fitness, and Jeremy Miller, a Patriot trainer — will each attempt to do 7,500 pull-ups in a 24-hour period in the hopes of breaking the Guinness World record which currently stands at 7,300.

The Pull Ups for Patriots fundraising event will take place at the City Centre Plaza in downtown Elmhurst beginning on Friday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. and will continue through Saturday, April 29 at 9:30 p.m. The public is invited to come out and observe at any time during the 24 hours.

“The event is a fundraiser for a charity called Pull Up Bars for Patriots, which has no affiliation with Patriot Sports and Fitness,” said Janowitz. Founded by a former Marine, Pull-Up Bars for Patriots’ mission is to erect pull-up bar memorials to honor fallen service members while encouraging physical fitness across the U.S. Amazingly, this will be the second time Janowitz will challenge a Guinness World record.

When asked what motivates him, Janowitz talked about his background. “I’ve been infatuated with fitness and athletics ever since I was a little kid and I guess I’ve always wanted to be the toughest kid around,” he said.

He recalled at age 5, while other kids were watching cartoons, he would watch workout programs and follow along.

Janowitz took up wrestling when he was very young.

“I’ve been testing my physical and mental toughness ever since,” he stated. After achieving great success as a high school wrestler, Janowitz joined the U. S. Navy and became a member of the All Navy Wrestling Team, with the hope of making the US Olympic wrestling team. After wrestling, he became a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter where he was ranked 35th in the world.

After his fourth professional fight, Nick broke his hand and needed a hip replacement. Still he had a yearning for competition.

This sparked his desire to break a world record. He initially looked into the pull-up world record, which at that time was 5,000, but considered it too difficult.

Instead he challenged the burpees record, because burpees had always been an integral part of his wrestling conditioning. The burpee, or squat thrust, is a full body exercise used in strength training which is done in four steps. From a standing position, the person squats on haunches with

hands on the floor by the feet. In step 3, the person jumps the feet straight back and straightens the arms; then jumps the feet forward between the hands again, then returns to standing.

After contacting the Guinness World Records and receiving approval, Nick trained for two weeks and broke the burpees record of 10,000 done in 24 hours by doing 10,164 burpees in just 17 hours.

“The decades of military, wrestling and MMA training, the sacrifices and most importantly the setbacks – a hip replacement, hand surgery, and three knee surgeries - are what really made me believe could break the burbees record - and that I can break this world record of 7,300 pull ups,” Janowitz said.

Jeremy Miller, Janowitz’s partner in this quest the break the pull ups record, just enlisted in the Navy on March 1 of this year. Miller’s goal is to become a Navy Seal. Janowitz beamed with pride at Miller’s ambition.

“Navy Seals are the ultimate warriors,” Janowitz said. “They are ordinary people trying to do extraordinary things. We only have one life and everyone is going to die someday -- why not live a life full of honor, courage and commitment instead of putting it on someone else. People say we support our troops, but what does that mean? The best way of supporting our troops is by being a troop.”

Both Janowitz and Miller are very committed to supporting our military. Not surprisingly, when Pull Up Bars for Patriots contacted Janowitz last year about getting involved or donating money, he decided to do both.

“I contacted the Guinness World Records and got approval to challenge the pull-ups record,“ said Janowitz. All funds raised at the April event to break the pull-up record will be used to erect a pullups memorial in Elmhurst to honor Sergeant Joseph Vanek of Elmhurst,

who at 22 years old was killed in action in Iraq in November of 2007.

“Heroes like Joe are being forgotten along the way,” he said. “The goal of this fundraiser is to bring awareness to the real heroes of the world. We take for granted what it means to give your life for someone else. Our servicemen and women put their lives on the line to protect our freedom. So, if I can help honor Joe and other fallen service members who are our true heroes, I will.”

Janowitz identified another factor that motivates him to challenge world records.

“I want to be the toughest man on the planet,” he said. “Some people might think that sounds crazy but I think it’s crazy if you don’t want to be it. I’m a firm believer in showing rather than saying. A lot of people think they are tough or fit, but can they prove it? I wake up every day and try to become a better man than I was the day before.

“If I want to continue coaching and molding warriors like Jeremy Miller, then I better lead by example. If you want to be the toughest man on the planet than you better

train like it. The 10,164 burpees and the hopefully soon to be 7,500 pull ups is a good start to becoming the toughest man on the planet.

“See, everyone has a breaking point; I just want mine to be higher than everyone else’s.”

“It’s going to be a huge even and we plan on having 10,000 people throughout the 24 hours,” stated Janowitz. “This world record is considered one of the toughest physical challenges in the world. There will be a set of pull up bars for people to do pull-ups with us. This will be very motivating as we take on our challenge. We encourage everyone available to come out and support us.”

ESO musicians to perform at Mayslake The Elmhurst Symphony Musicians in Performance at Mayslake series concludes its 2016-17 season with “All That Jazz” on Thursday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook. ESO Assistant Conductor Allison Gaines will lead a selected group of ESO musicians in an evening of jazz—with strings attached! Lake Effect to perform benefit concert for Symphony The local band Lake Effect will be performing a concert to benefit the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 8 from 12-4 p.m at Pinstripes in Oak Brook.

Lake Effect will be the spotlight of the afternoon, providing music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s will be in the spotlight throughout the afternoon.

Tickets for the benefit are $50 for adults; $30 for youth 13-17; and $20 for children 5-12. Six percent of the ticket price is tax-deductible. Raffle tickets to help support

EMH Foundation names Career Fund for doctor, long-time Trustee The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation has established the Mary Ann Malloy, MD Career Enrichment Fund in recognition of Dr. Malloy’s more than 30 years Mary Ann Malloy, MD as a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees and distinguished career as an internal medicine physician with Elmhurst Clinic.

“We are pleased to honor Dr. Malloy for all that she has done to engage the community in support of the hospital. The endowment fund combines Dr. Malloy’s two passions – cardiac care and continuing education,” says Ken Wegner, Board Chair, EMH Foundation. “The fund will provide learning and enrichment opportunities in the areas of cardiology or cardiac surgery for Elmhurst Hospital and Elmhurst Clinic employees.”

Dr. Malloy, a Foundation Trustee for 31 years, served as Vice-Chair of the Board, was the founding Chairman of the Special Event Committee

(now the Autumn Affair gala) and Co-Chaired the Capital Campaign for the new Main Hospital building project. She has been a member of the hospital’s Medical Staff since 1972, serving on several committees and holding leadership positions.

Dr. Malloy previously served as President of the American Heart Association (AHA) in Chicago and was the AHA’s first Committee Chairman for Women and Heart Disease.

The IT staff volleyball players return a shot back to the students who stand ready to counter-attack the play. The women’s faculty team beat the IT girls in a close game that ended 25-23.

On Feb. 21, 42 Addison Trail students participated in an Italian Immersion Day at Casa Italia in Stone Park. Those students are enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level or Honors 3 or 4 Italian courses and attended the event with teachers Judie Vitiritti-Lynch and Enza Spilotro. The day was comprised of activities such as Speed Chatting, Win Lose or Draw, Who am I?, Kahoot!, Quizlet Live and full-immersion discussions. Ten other schools participated as well, and students also had an opportunity to sing karaoke while eating an Italian lunch.

District 4 staff holds development sessions All District 4 staff members participated in staff development sessions on the afternoon of Friday, March 17, which was an early-dismissal day for students. In-house experts offered 20 different classes on a variety of topics, many of them technology- based.

Students from Ms. Sarah Jones’ 5th grade class at Stone School took part in a presentation on the software Seesaw, a digital portfolio that collects students’ digital and physical work in one place and allows parents to have a “window” into the classroom. During the work session which followed the presentation, the students moved around the room, ready to talk to the teachers in the audience about their experience with the software.

Educational support personnel created hands-on materials for projects designed to help students with a variety of academic and learning tasks, including letter identification, number sense, matching, one-to-one correspondence and fine motor skills.

Fenton softball team hard at work Bison looking to take the next step this spring

Fenton coach Dave Mello certainly liked the way the first week of preseason practice unfolded.

“We love the way the first week went,” said Mello. “Everyone is working hard and we are trying to prepare them for what is a very difficult first few games.”

Mello noted the team was slated to open the season against ICA No. 22-ranked Fremd, followed by games with No. 21 Trinity and No. 7 Elk Grove.

“Our philosophy always has been to play these types of teams so we can do what we did last year in the postseason,” Mello explained. “We don’t worry much about wins and losses in the regular season, we just want to stay true to the process and be ready to play our best ball in late May.” Fenton is coming off a 2016 season where it went 11-27 overall and 1-11 in Metro Suburban Conference West Division play.

While Fenton finished last in the division, it did enjoy a strong postseason showing in its first year in Class 4A. Fenton won a regional quarterfinal against Proviso East

and then won the regional semifinal against Niles North before losing a hard-fought 1-0 contest to Chicago Whitney Young in the regional championship.

Fenton returns the likes of seniors Taylor Spizzirri (pitcher), Jenna Geraci (pitcher-OF) and Annie Gonzales (OF), along with junior Rose Riley (3B) and sophomores Isa Lozada (SS) and Payton Pugilese (2B).

Key newcomers to the team include senior Keila Lozada (C), juniors Dorothy Novello (1B), Reyna DeLaTorre (OF) and Cristina Villegas (OF), as well as freshman catcher Alyssa Texta.

“Right now our biggest weakness would be that we have eight girls making their varsity debuts and they will be getting varsity action against three ranked teams,” said Mello. “We also will play top teams in April such as Bartlett, Glenbard South and Whitney Young.”

Spizzirri, Geraci and Cynthia Guevara will pitch almost all Fenton’s innings, Mello noted of the three seniors. “All three are looking really good in practice,” he said.

The coach is excited about his double-play combination of soph-

omores Lozada and Pugilese at shortstop and second respectively.

“They were on varsity last season and have really taken huge steps forward this season,” said Mello.

“Isa is our quickest girl and probably our best athlete. Payton is our most vocal and always is letting her teammates know where the play is to be made. We are very excited to see them work together and help make our defense up the middle very solid.”

Mello said Glenbard South will again be the team to keep an eye out for in the MSC Blue Division this spring. “Everyone is chasing Glenbard South. They always are the team to beat,” he said. “Our goals are to be competitive in every game we play and to learn on a daily basis. Our final goal is to finish what we started in that regional final last season and win the regional this season. Our slogan has been ‘One More Step’ ever since we lost to Whitney Young.”

On the college front, Mello said it looks like Spizzirri will continue her education and softball career at Aurora University while Geraci will continue her education and softball career at Elmhurst College.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team starts season with PK win over Lincoln-Way Central Knights roster jam-packed with experience

The goal of the IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team is a rather simple one.

“The girls’ goal is to get downstate,” said Knights coach Tom Schergen. “Their theme of the year, they are using the word ‘breakthrough.’ They want to break through that wall and get downstate. They made it real simple.

That is what they are striving for.”

The Knights started the season in fine form with a 2-1 win in penalty kicks over Lincoln-Way Central as part of the Windy City Classic tournament.

“It’s a big win for us to get a win against a school like that to start the year,” said Schergen. “The girls played well. It was a back-and-forth game. I was very proud of how our girls hung in there even when we were on our heels. We kept to our defensive principles and played solid defense.”

Junior Grace Fuller scored IC Catholic Prep’s lone goal in regulation six minutes into the contest.

After two scoreless overtime sessions, the Knights hit their first three penalty kicks and Lincoln-Way Central missed its first three.

Sophomore Olivia Hurt, senior Tessa Langan and senior Tess Reardon each had a penalty kick.

Equally important was the play of junior goalie Rochelle Spizzirri in the second half.

“One of their kicks missed the net and Rochelle saved the other

two,” said Schergen. “She came up huge for us.”

Sophomore Gabby Smola started in goal in the first half for the Knights.

The Knights return nine of 11 starters this year, including senior Liz Maloney (center mid), senior Kaitlyn Grady (central defense), Fuller (forward), Hurt (forward), sophomore Suzy Maloney (outside fullback), Langan (center mid), Reardon (central defense), junior Sophie Zanoni (outside mid) and senior Demitra DelFiacco (midfield).

Key newcomers include freshmen Bella Leslie (outside mid) and Annie Guinan (outside fullback).

IC Catholic Prep is coming off a 2016 season where it went 13-11-1 overall.

“One thing I really like is our team chemistry,” said Schergen.

“Since we have so many players back from last year we’ve been able to hit the ground running. This group gelled together at the end of the year and we wound up winning six of our last eight games. We have some real good senior leadership out there. It’s like having four more coaches out on the field with Tess Reardon, Tessa Langan, Liz Maloney and Kaitlyn Grady.”

Schergen likes how the team is looking up the center of the field.

“Our strongest position is up the middle with our central defense, center midfield and our forward— right up the middle with those six players. It’s a definite strength,” he said. “Four of the six are seniors so

there is a lot of experience in the middle of the field. And playing high-school soccer, experience on the field goes a long way.”

Schergen also is a fan of the team’s demeanor. “I really enjoy their positive energy,” he said. “It’s a very positive group with no complainers. They come to practice and work hard and when we are playing games they are putting it all out there on the field and that’s always great to be able to coach a group like that. These girls show up and play the game hard. They want to push through that goal for themselves and pursue getting the team downstate.”

Youth movement Willowbrook girls soccer team roster filled with young contributing players

The Willowbrook girls soccer team will be on the young side this season. And the Warriors have the statistics to prove it.

“We have 11 sophomores and freshmen on the varsity who will be able to contribute to the team right away,” said Willowbrook coach Julio Del Real. “All of them are very eager to start contributing as soon as possible. They look very promising and are excited to show their teammates what they are capable of doing.”

Willowbrook is coming off a 2016 campaign where it went 11-8-3 overall and 4-2 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

Top returning players include senior midfielder Kassandra Darrus, senior defender Valentina Poggi, junior defender Jessica Ragucci and junior midfielder Sarah Poirier. Sophomore goalie Zoe Ericson also is back.

“We should be very strong up the middle of the field,” said Del Real. “The players in those positions have experience and have played together for at least one season. If we can incorporate everyone else to them, we should be able to have a very successful year.”

Mixing the younger players in with the established veterans will be a key for the Warriors. “We can be pretty good depending on how well the girls adapt to each other,” said Del Real. “The mixture of youth and experience should be a reason to be optimistic about our chances to compete in every game. We should be able to score plenty of goals if the team gels quickly because of the mixture of skills and speed. The mixture of experience and youth will be very interesting and exciting. Personally, this is the best-skilled team I have coached in my 18 years of varsity experience. We’re hoping to bring it all together in order to have a great time playing the game that means so much to all of us on this team.”

Darrus, Poirer and Montoya lead the way in the midfield. “We have a pretty talented group in the middle,” said Del Real. “With Darrus, Poirier and Montoya leading this group, the team will rely heavily on them coming together quickly in order to achieve big goals.”

Ragucci and Poggi help anchor the Willowrbook defense. “With both players being the core of the team, we are relying on both of them to lead the team and bring it together. How quickly this happens will dictate the success the team will have,” said Del Real.

“Jessica and Valentina will be a force to be reckoned with. Being the ultimate team players and with them being healthy all season, we will accomplish many goals that we have set for ourselves and the program.”

Ericson will man the goalie box for Del Real. “The team is looking forward to the many capabilities that Zoe brings to the team,” he said. “It is going to be very exciting to see her play back there.”

Del Real is excited to see what the future holds for his team this spring. “We are looking forward to great things from this great group of young ladies,” he said. “With the experience and skill we have, we should be able to achieve many positives and gain the respect that this school deserves. We are hoping to finish in the top three in our conference, win at least a few games in the state series and win both tournaments we will be participating in this season.”

Depth on field to help Addison Trail girls soccer team Blazers boys track team sees indoor success

When it comes to the team aspect, the Addison Trail girls soccer team rates well, according to Blazers assistant coach Angel Vega.

“Our strength overall this year is we are a slightly better team,” said Vega. “This year we are a better overall unit offensively and defensively. If each player sticks to her duties on the field, we will find success on the pitch.”

The Blazers are coming off a 2016 season where they won three games (one West Suburban Conference Gold Division win) and tied another.

Back for Addison Trail is four-year varsity player Anna Bajorek. “If Anna and Meryem Ahmed can find consistency in their play, they can be key players for us,” said the complimentary Vega.

Vega added newcomers Sandy Herrera and Bernice Berrumen will provide a spark for the Blazers. “Newcomers like Sandy and Bernice give the team the energy

and tenacity we need,” said Vega.

Another plus, Vega noted, is the team’s chemistry.

“The team comradery this year has been a delight,” said Vega. “This group seems to genuinely like each other and they want each other to succeed.”

Addison Trail boys track Addison Trail boys track coach Bruce Kelsay has seen some positives early on in the indoor track season.

Kelsay noted returning state qualifiers Jordyn CarrJones and Darrion Conrad have run well indoors, “and will hopefully return downstate this year in the 110 high hurdles and 200 dash, respectively,” he said.

Kelsay also is excited about Addison Trail’s 800 and 1,600 relay teams. “Our 4-by-200 and 4-by-400 relay teams have a chance to qualify this spring as well, as does junior Marco Flores in the 800,” he said.

Addison Trail’s first outdoor meet is scheduled for April 8. The Blazers will compete in their first big invitational of the outdoor season April 13 at Elgin.

Willowbrook softball team ready to tackle 2017 season Defense and speed will be strengths for Warriors this spring

The Willowbrook softball team has a couple of commodities that tend to be difference-makers on the field.

“Our defense is a strength,” said Willowbrook coach Rachel Karos.

“We are much quicker in the outfield.

Our speed also will help us keep teams on their toes and I’m hoping it helps improve our offensive game.”

The Warriors went 14-16 a year ago and took fourth in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 5-5 record.

Returning to Willowbrook are seniors Megan Talan (2B), Veronica Swan (pitcher) and Emily King (utility), along with juniors Jiana Fuentes (SS), Katie Smith (C) and sophomore Samantha Mishlove (CF).

Newcomers to watch include senior Ali Letson (1B), juniors Maddie Campbell (pitcher), Marissa Marcello (OF) and Chloe Zunkel, and sophomores Amy Bussa (3B), Anna Carson (utility) and Katie Pettinger (OF).

Karos likes what she has seen thus far at the plate in practice. “We are young so we are hoping to just keep improving throughout the year, put the ball in play and make teams play defense.”

And speaking of defense, there is

potential on that front for the Warriors. “We are solid defensively.

We’re young in some spots, but experienced,” said Karos. “This is an area we will continue to improve on throughout the year.”

Swan, a senior, and Campbell, a sophomore, will man the pitching circle for the Warriors. “We have two new varsity pitchers in Veronica and Maddie,” said Karos. “Both pitchers aren’t overpowering as far as speed goes, but are great at hitting their spots and will force hitters to make decisions.”

Letson, Smith and Swan have been opening eyes in practice with their bats. “They’ve been swinging some big bats so far and I’m confident they will put up some good numbers this year,” said Karos.

And during practice thus far, Karos has presided over a hard-working and determined bunch. “I love my team’s work ethic this year,” she said. “They have shown up, been committed throughout the year and are determined to be a competitive force in the conference.”

Karos sees another year of good competition in the WSC Gold. “In a very competitive conference I’m hoping for a third-place or better finish,” she said. “Our goal is to build our confidence, continue working hard and improve after each game.”

Established in 1955, Harand Camp was one of the first co-ed, residential camps to combine musical theater with the fun of traditional camp life. Harand offers first-rate arts training for campers ages 7-18, plus activities, sports, and camp fun in a supportive, family environment. Sessions run one, three, or six weeks and culminate with largescale performances in a 400-seat, stateof-the-art theater.

In preparation for final shows, campers take daily classes in singing, dancing, and acting with occasional rehearsals in the evening. Harand Camp adheres to a non-competitive philosophy where “no man is an island” and everyone is a star. The goal is for every camper to develop performance skills while also building self-confidence.

In addition to the theatre program, campers take three periods of electives per day. Options include a variety of sports, fitness, fine arts and activity classes as well as additional performing arts and production electives. The web site discoverwisconsin. com recently released a list of the top ten most beautiful places in Wisconsin. The list was composed by Mariah Haberman, who hosts the nation’s longest-running tourism TV show, Discover Wisconsin.

1. Apostle Island National Lakeshore in Bayfield Consisting of 21 islands located at the northern tip of the state, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore offers endless beauty in its historic lighthouses and sandstone caves.

2. Pattison State Park in Superior Located in northwest Wisconsin, Pattison State Park is home to Wisconsin’s tallest waterfall, Big Manitou Falls.

3. Pewits Nest in Baraboo Pewits Nest includes a deep gorge surrounded by tall pines and majestic bluffs plus a beautiful stream that runs right through it. It was formed during the retreat of the last glacier.

4. Door County in northeast Wisconsin From Cave Point County Park in Sturgeon Bay all the way up to the famous Winding Road in Gills Rock to Washington Island, Door County is literally bursting with spectacular places to discover.
