Nation shuts down as coronavirus threat rises Governor makes call to close bars, restaurants

News updates about the COVID-19 coronavirus have been changing almost hourly, making your weekly newspaper behind the times before the presses even stop rolling.

What started as a mild threat heard on the news has now escalated to what could well be an illness that threatens the entire globe. Amid conspiracy theories of many levels to assertions that “it’s not that bad” to full-blown lockdowns of school districts, college and universities, government agencies and, by order of Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, all bars and restaurants.

At press time, the most recent developments included: 1. A resident of DuPage DuPage County tested positive for the COVID-19 Coronavirus; 2. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin supports Governor’s emergency declaration; 3. The governor calls for closing bars and restaurants throughout the state for two weeks.

State and local public health officials have started an investigation to learn who may have had contact with the woman prior to the diagnosis.

“Our staff is working to quickly identify, interview and learn the risk for people who may have been in close contact with the first COVID-19 case in DuPage County,” said Karen Ayala, executive director, DuPage County Health Department. “Our highest priority is the health and safe-

ty of all who live, work and play in DuPage County, and we will continue to use every available resource to prepare our communities for additional cases of COVID-19.”

Cronin supports governor’s emergency declaration On Monday, March 9, Pritzker proclaimed a State of Emergency to assure that the state’s disaster response costs would be eligible for reimburse-

ment through federal government programs and making State Disaster Relief Funds available.

Cronin expressed support for the governor’s decision to issue an Emergency Proclamation. Following is a portion of a statement released by Cronin: “Today we stand with the governor as he has acted to better prepare our state for the next phase of our response to COVID-19. While the risk

to Illinoisans remains low, the governor’s proclamation provides an avenue for state and local governments to access federal funding for our planning and response efforts. DuPage County resident tests positive for coronavirus disease On Saturday, March 14, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Governor JB Pritzker announced that a resident of DuPage County had tested positive at the IDPH Laboratory for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The resident is a female in her 60s and was in stable condition at the latest reports. No other information about the woman was released.

Doctor offers tips on anxiety about coronavirus Excessive anxiety can have a negative impact on all areas of life: our relationships, parenting, quality of life, even our immune system.

Given the current c i r c u m s t a n c e s , Dr. Aaron Weiner having good coping mechanisms in place is essential to our health and well being.

Everyone is talking about coronavirus (COVID-19) right now, and for

good reason. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a pandemic, and while 80% of cases are mild and individuals under the age of 50 have a low mortality rate (0.2%), the mortality rate begins to rise for individuals older than 50 and is very significant for those over 80.

“Concerns about coronavirus are absolutely warranted, and it’s essential that we … follow the [official] recommendations to slow the progression of COVID-19,” said Aaron Weiner, Ph.D., director of addiction services at Linden Oaks Behavior-

al Health, part of Edward-Elmhurst Health. “It’s also critical that we … make an intentional effort not to let our anxiety get the better of us.”

Michelle “Chelle” T. O’Connell, 72 Michelle “Chelle” T. O’Connell, of Addison, formerly of Elmhurst, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Asbury Nursing Home in Aurora, at the age of 72. She was born in Buffalo, New York. She is survived by her daughter Gillian, son Joseph, and her brother Hogarth.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree at Hollins College and a Masters in Library Science with an emphasis on Information Storage and Retrieval at the University at Buffalo. She also earned her real estate license in New York State. She was part of the inaugural women’s class at the Buffalo Rotary Club and is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. She served as Marketing Director at the Elmhurst YMCA and, after a term as Executive Director of the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce, incorporated two business and two LLC’s.

She was on the Board of Directors for Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce, on the Patient Family Advisory Council for Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, and was co-President for the Women’s Club of Addison.

She embraced technology and always wanted to help others achieve their dreams and live a better life. She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church of Lombard.

Visitation will be held at Humes Funeral Home in Addison on Saturday, March 21, from 1 to 3 p.m., with a Memorial Service immediately following.

District 4 Schools suspend outside-of-school activities

On Wednesday, March 11, Addison School District 4 shared the following information with staff, school families, and the local community: During the next couple of weeks, there are many events scheduled to take place in our schools both during the school day and after. School officials are concerned with the potential of increased risk factors with visitors in our schools that may contribute to the possibility of community spread of the COVID-19.

Therefore, all activities involving outside individuals in our facilities (including sports, concerts and meetings) and activities involving ASD4 students going outside of school (i.e., field trips) are cancelled. All district after school meetings are cancelled as well. The status of activities will continue until further notice.

Normal school operations will continue as normal.

The decision to cancel all other activities is to limit the community spread risk-factors in our community.

ASD4 custodial crews continue to use the flu and cold season protocols to ensure that all touchable surfaces are disinfected, and we remind all employees and students to refrain from personal contact and sharing drinks or food, regularly and thoroughly wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, cover your face with a tissue when you sneeze or cough, and stay home when you are sick.

Bartlett man guilty of battery to special needs grocery bagger On Wednesday, March 4, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that a Bartlett man has been found guilty of Aggravated Battery to a Jewel grocery store employee.

The guilty verdict against Bruce Mirabella, 51, was handed down by Judge Brian Telander, immediately following a four-hour-long bench trial. Aggravated Battery is a Class 3 Felony. On July 23, Mirabella appeared in Bond Court where bond was set bond at $50,000 with 10% to apply. He posted the necessary 10%, or $5,000, and was released the same

day.

On July 22, 2019, officers with the Bartlett Police Department responded to the Jewel grocery store located on Sterns Road in response to a battery of a store employee. Through their investigation, officers learned that at approximately 9:45 p.m., Mirabella went to the store to purchase alcohol. While in the checkout line, Mirabella punched the victim, a bagger who has special needs, in the face and then kicked him in his left back area before fleeing the store. Bartlett Police Department took Mirabella into custody a short time later from

his home.

“For reasons still unclear, Mr. Mirabella violently attacked an innocent man at work,” Berlin said.

“Mirabella’s appalling behavior is magnified when considering the fact that the victim in this case is a special needs individual who, while working as a bagger at Jewel, posed no threat to the defendant.”

Mirabella’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, April 6, for sentencing. Following the verdict, Judge Telander revoked Mirabella’s bond and he was taken into custody.

Take coronavirus seriously … and patronize our local businesses

The coronavirus (COVID-19) has, of course, been front and center in the news for the past several weeks.

Every day, there’s a new story about how the coronavirus has spread and who has tested positive (actor Tom Hanks and his wife being the most well-known); how the stock market has nosedived; and how daily life is being altered or disrupted.

Events that draw large crowds have been cancelled in an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus— such as St. Patrick’s Day parades in Chicago and the suburbs, and various conventions in the city itself (an example being the annual World Congress of Cardiology convention which was expected to bring 18,000 people to McCormick Place).

The travel industry, as we know, also is taking a huge hit. Perhaps you have already postponed or cancelled a planned vacation or trip overseas, or cancelled a cruise.

Nationally, many colleges and universities have closed (or are in the process of closing) campus classrooms and dorms, and moving classes online.

Locally, it was announced last Friday that all public and private schools have been closed until the end of March.

All of March Madness—i.e., the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments—has been cancelled. The remainder of the NBA and NHL regular seasons have been suspended indefinitely. Major League Baseball announced it has suspended spring training and will delay the start of the regular season.

Popular TV shows, as well as latenight talk shows, now have no studio audiences.

And on Sunday, the surprising announcement was made by Gov. JB Pritzker that all bars and dinein restaurants will be closed until March 30—with the exception being restaurants that have delivery and drive-up options.

It can all make your head spin. It probably already has.

What can you do to reduce the

chances of contracting the coronavirus? A notice posted outside of an area municipal building succinctly sums up steps you can take: • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue; then throw the tissue in the trash. (We will add here that if you don’t have a tissue handy, cough or sneeze into your elbow. This can effectively prevent fluids from spreading.)

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

• Stay home when you are sick.

Please take the above hygiene recommendations seriously. The health and safety of you and your loved ones is, and has to be, your top priority.

However, if you are healthy, we urge you not to give in to outright fear and panic. Try to go about your normal routine as much as possible.

If you do go out, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges social distancing—keeping a distance of six feet from other people.

And remember to support our local businesses! It goes without saying that they are the lifeblood of our community. That local business owner and their employees—many of whom are your neighbors and friends—depend on your patronage.

With regard to our restaurants, we strongly urge you to place orders often with those restaurants that have drive-up and delivery options. And when they do re-open, get back out to your favorite restaurant or bar!

Not making that phone call to place an order—or not doing business with local companies, shops and retailers—will hurt their business and hurt the local economy, in general. We think you’ll agree we don’t want to see that scenario play out.

Letters to the editor American people ‘made a mistake’ electing Donald Trump

I am a private citizen, having never spoken publicly on any major issue affecting us all. To date I have been what once was described as the “silent majority.” I am silent no longer.

In 1950, Margaret Chase Smith, senator from Maine, spoke in a “Declaration of Conscience” to the U.S. Senate. She stated “I don’t want the Republican Party to rise to victory on the four horses of calumny: fear, ignorance, bigotry and smear.” She was responding to the single focus attacks and character assassinations by Sen. Joe McCarthy.

My personal assessment of President Trump is that his comments and actions are consistent with Senator Chase’s “horses of calumny.”

A quote on the definition of abuse of power found in Wikipedia states: “Malfeasance in office is often a just

cause for removal of an elected official by statute or recall election. Officials who utilize abuse of power are often those who exploit the ability to use corruption in their advantage.”

These two quotes characterize the presidency of Donald Trump. The egregious manner in which he executes the power of his office has undermined law enforcement, generated falsehoods, stated statements on the environment and made self-contradictory statements in general. We started to see that in his personal attacks on political opponents during his campaign for the presidency as he appealed to cynicism regarding government.

To date, we’ve seen turnover of key administration officials and he lacks a legitimate legislative agenda.

It is clear to me the American people made a mistake in electing such a person. The Republican Party is complicit because of silence in condemnation of his behavior and his personal values are inconsistent with the values of

Illinois casinos ordered closed; gaming board cites public health concerns

The Illinois Gaming Board has ordered all 10 casinos in the state to suspend operations for 14 days starting Monday, citing public health concerns over the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19.

“The public health of patrons, casino employees, IGB staff, and others is of paramount importance,” the board said in a statement March 13. “The board is continuously

monitoring developments and will update licensees and the public as frequently as possible.”

Gaming Board Administrator Marcus Fruchter said in a letter sent to the casinos that before the end of the 14-day period he would review the public health situation and decide whether the suspension of operations should be extended.

The action was just the latest in a series closures and event cancellations that have

occurred in the past week as the number of people in Illinois diagnosed with the virus has grown to more than 40.

Earlier on March 13, Gov. JB Pritzker ordered public schools to close. That started on Tuesday, and schools will remain closed through March 30. He has also ordered the cancellation of public events that draw more than 1,000 people.

Additoinally, the Illinois General Assembly has said it will not reconvene until at least March 24.

The Human Resources Director Erin and her HR Assistant Janine planned and coordinated the 40th

They were both on hand for all three shifts’ meals, handing out the shirts and restocking the pizza and soda pop.

The care for people SWD, Inc. shows internally is also reflected in the Addison community. The company is a member of several industry groups such as the Midwest Fas-

Charges upgraded to murder after stabbing victim succumbs to his injuries DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Tuesday, March 11, that a West Chicago man originally charged with Aggravated Battery is now facing murder charges after the victim succumbed to his injuries. Joel Munoz-Valdez, 24, appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge Jeffrey MacKay set bond at $2 million with 10% to apply.

On Sunday, March 1, Munoz-Val-

dez’s bond was set at $100,000 with 10% to apply on two charges of Aggravated Battery (Class 3 Felony), one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Possession of Methamphetamine (Class 3 Felony.)

On March 11, the State replaced the Aggravated Battery charges with one count of First-Degree Murder. All other charges remain the same.

It is alleged that on Wednesday,

Feb. 26, at approximately 10:40 p.m., Munoz-Valdez approached Luis Lopez, the victim, outside a home on the 800 block of Brentwood in West Chicago.

It is alleged that a verbal altercation between Munoz-Valdez and the victim turned physical, at which time Munoz-Valdez took a knife out of his pocket and stabbed Lopez several times in the back and left leg. Munoz-Valdez allegedly fled the scene

Berlin said. “I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Luis Lopez as they mourn this senseless loss of life.”

Munoz-Valdez’s next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8 in front of Judge MacKay for arraignment.

Two Cook County men charged with stealing luxury cars DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Hinsdale Chief of Police Brian King announced that two Cook County males have been charged with stealing and/or possessing a stolen motor vehicle in DuPage County in two separate occasions.

On Friday, March 13, Jarone Carter, 24, of South Holland, and Christian Green, 18, of the same address, both appeared at a bond hearing, where Judge Brian Telander set bond at $50,000 with 10% to apply for Carter and $75,000 with 10% to apply for Green.

The State asked for bond of $200,000 for Carter and $300,000 for Green. Green has been charged with one count of Residential Burglary (Class 1 Felony) and one count

On March 11, 2020, as part of their ongoing efforts investigating stolen motor vehicles out of DuPage County, officers with the Hinsdale Police Department executed a search warrant at two locations in South Holland. Both Carter and Green were taken into custody at this time.

It is alleged that at approximately 2:56 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 9, Green traveled to Hinsdale and entered the attached garage of a residence located on Lincoln Street. It is further alleged that once inside the garage, Green stole a 2018 Jaguar F-Pace

from the garage. It is also alleged that on several occasions between Thursday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 29, Carter was observed in possession of a 2012 Audi A6 that was reported stolen on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Roselle man gets six years in college financial aid scheme DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced last week that a Roselle man accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the College of DuPage (COD) through an elaborate scheme involving financial aid fraud has been sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Lake Park 5th graders create their own ‘wax museum’ Fifth grade students at Lake Park School recently participated in a wax museum presentation where they portrayed a wide variety of historical figures. Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Ben Franklin, and Pocahontas were among the well-known figures the students researched. Some of the students portrayed figures who are not as well known, such as Mercy Otis Warren, Mary Ludwig Hays

(aka Molly Pitcher), and Eliza Lucas Pinckney, giving the 5th graders the opportunity to truly educate the museum visitors. Students dressed as their chosen historical figure and presented visual displays, which included posters and props. The students “came to life” for visitors, delivering a speech that shared information about their background, education, and accomplishments.

As pandemic sidelines high school sports, athletes wait to play STAFF REPORT

The high school spring sports season—the busiest season of the school year—is on hold.

Several high school teams were preparing to compete in their season openers this week and next week, but all of those events have been suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of the state’s winter programs weren’t able to finish their seasons. On Thursday, March 12, the IHSA announced it had canceled its remaining winter post-season tournaments, including the state’s boys basketball events.

Naperville Central, which beat Glenbard East in a March 11 semifinal game at the Class 4A Addison Trail Sectional, was supposed to play Lake Park in Friday’s sectional final. In the IHSA’s Class 2A level of boys basketball, Elmhurst’s Timothy Christian advanced to the state semifinals in Peoria. The Trojans were supposed to face Sacred Heart-Griffin of Springfield in Friday’s semifinal matchup in Peoria.

On Friday, March 13, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced that all K-12 schools in Illinois would be closed until at least March 30.

Willowbrook, Glenbard East and Montini will all have their spring break during the week of March 30 to April 3. The earliest that regular classes will resume at the three schools is Monday, April 6.

All school-related activities and events, including athletic practices and competitions, have been postponed during the time the area’s high schools are closed to regular classes.

The Willowbrook and Glenbard East girls soccer teams were both supposed to begin their seasons with separate March 17 matches in the 32team Windy City Classic. That tournament, which was supposed to run until March 26, has been cancelled.

Both Willowbrook and Glenbard East held their first practices of the season on March 2. Each team held its last practice before the suspension on Thursday, March 12.

“We didn’t know for sure that it was our last practice, but with all the communication coming from the district [Glenbard District 87] about e-learning and from Gov. Pritzker, we were pretty sure it would be our last,” said Glenbard East coach Kent Overbey. “We made sure the players had a good one.”

Overbey said that the Rams are scheduled to play a match against West Chicago on April 6—the possible date that regular classes will resume. It’s unlikely that match will take place on that day, as teams would not want to play a match after not practicing for over three weeks.

“The main thing we tried to communicate with the team was that this

is an awful situation, and that we all just need to stay ready for the opportunity to perform, whenever that happens,” added Overbey when asked what he told the team’s players about the extraordinary suspension.

“It was sort of surreal because none of us has ever gone through it before.

We made sure the team knew that we appreciated their hard work and their dedication, and that we would have a fitness routine for them that they could do at home to stay in shape.

The hardest part was the seniors.”

Willowbrook girls soccer coach Julio Del Real, who is the school’s director of deans, was also thinking about his team’s seniors as he discussed the suspension of the season.

“The ones I feel worst for are all of my seniors,” said Del Real. “I feel bad for everybody, but the seniors are the ones who come to mind. I am hoping and praying that we will get something going, to get these young ladies what they deserve, which is at least some of the season, and the opportunity to go out on their terms.”

While Overbey sensed that the March 12 practice would be the Rams’ last practice for awhile, Del Real and the Warriors were expecting to have a practice on March 13.

“We were ready to go on Friday [March 13], but we were told to stop,” said Del Real, who sent a group message to his players at about 2 p.m. on Friday to notify them the practice had been cancelled. He later informed the team that the season had been suspended.

“This is one of the most difficult things I’ve had to go through as a coach,” added Del Real, who has been coaching for about 30 years.

“You are preparing with the kids, putting the time in. To suddenly stop like this—we accept it, but it still feels horrible.”

Del Real and other coaches and athletic directors warned their athletes not to practice or compete with their non-school club or travel teams while the spring season is suspended.

If they do participate with their club or travel teams during that time, they will be ineligible to play for their high school teams when the suspension is lifted.

The Glenbard East boys volleyball team was supposed to begin its season with a March 24 match against Willowbrook. The Rams held their tryouts and first practices last week.

“We got tryouts done and barely got teams picked,” said Glenbard East coach Marci Maier. “We had practice on Wednesday and Thursday before we were sent home on Friday. We were very excited after Thursday’s practice. The boys were working hard.”

The Warriors posted a conference record of 9-3 during the recently concluded season. They finished second to Proviso East in the conference standings. Willowbrook completed the season with an overall record of 15-14. Herron (No. 15-above left) set a new program record for steals in a season. She made 150 steals during the 2019-20 campaign. Herron finished her Willowbrook career with a program-leading 253 steals. Dasbach (No. 30-above middle) posted double-double outputs (with double figures in scoring and rebounding) in 22 of the team’s 29 games. She delivered a double-double effort in Willowbrook’s last game of the season—a 69-63 overtime loss to Batavia at the IHSA Class 4A Batavia Regional. Dasbach supplied 17 points and 18 rebounds in that contest. Knudtson (No. 11-above right) delivered one of her top games of the season in the same game. Addison Trail baseball team looking to take the next step Carlson, Conrad and Lollino are key pieces back for Blazers

Senior standouts are never a bad thing to have a on a baseball roster.

And the Addison Trail baseball team has several of those heading into the now-delayed 2020 season.

Back for the Blazers are senior three-year varsity player AJ Carlson (middle infielder/outfielder), along with classmates Alex Conrad (pitcher) and Jonathan Lollino (catcher).

“AJ is a three-year varsity guy at the top of the order, Alex is our one starting pitcher coming back and Jonathan did an outstanding job behind the plate for us last year,” coach Mike Kennedy noted. “He should be a strong force for us back there this year.”

season where it went 12-17 overall and 7-11 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

The Blazers also will receive contributions from seniors Hessey Gonzalez (third baseman/first baseman/ catcher) and Sam Conforti (third baseman/first baseman/pitcher), juniors Mario Ferri (infielder), Victor Gutierrez (utility), Brian Jensen (designated hitter/catcher) and Dino DiGrazia (first baseman), and sophomore Anthony Biancalana (outfielder/left-handed pitcher). Kennedy said Jensen brings a big bat to the lineup, while Biancalana and Conforti (reliever) will help on the mound.

Kennedy said Addison Trail will get it done with the glove this spring.

“We should be pretty solid on the defensive side,” he said.

Attention to detail has been a key point stressed thus far. “We are really stressing running the bases and being aggressive on the bases,” said Kennedy. “Being smart will help us win

games. Our intelligence and being baseball guys will help us win.”

Addison Trail will benefit from Carlson’s continued presence at the top of the order. He hit around .350 last year, Kennedy noted. “AJ getting on base is going to be crucial,” Kennedy said. “We are going to have to be smart and hopefully we can create some good opportunities for hitters to get good pitches. If we are aggressive, then we can get fastballs and when we get fastballs we have to jump on them.

“Our philosophy is get your pitch and hit it. We don’t return a lot of experience with the bat, but that inexperience right now doesn’t mean we aren’t good. It means we haven’t really been tested yet. We have strong guys and guys who can hit the ball hard. We’ll see that eventually this spring.”

“Downers Grove South is coming back and they are pretty loaded,” he said. “Year in and year out they seem to be the team to beat and this team is no different. They have the most experience coming back. The last few years, Willowbrook has always been tough and they are coming off

The Fenton boys basketball team’s season was one for the record books.

Coach Chaz Taft’s squad finished 21-12 overall and went 11-7 in Upstate Eight Conference action in its first year in the league.

More importantly, the 21 wins ties the program single-season record, equaling that of the 1975-1976 team.

“We did great,” said Taft. “Our seniors and everybody else on the team all came together. It was really good

to see. They weren’t just teammates.

They were friends off the floor. They hung out a lot together and did a lot of team bonding stuff throughout the season. Them coming together as a group was a big part of their success.”

Fenton reached a Class 3A regional championship game where it lost to St. Viator.

Andre Reed and Diamon King were named to the all-Upstate Eight Conference team. Taft noted both players averaged 15 points per game with King also averaging eight rebounds a contest. Reed sank 102 three-pointers, which equates to

nearly four made per game.

“Both of them are looking at Division III colleges,” said Taft. “Once everything settles down here (with the coronavirus), they will start looking at numerous schools in the area.”

Taft also lauded the play of senior point guard Jose Alvarez.

“He led us the whole way,” he said. “He broke the single-season record for assists and broke the career record for assists. He was our main guy who handled the ball every time and got us into our stuff. He handled pressure and got the ball to the guys who needed it. He was great all year.”

Taft is pleased with how Fenton

handled itself in its first year in the UEC. “We had 11 wins and that was a great first year,” he said.

Fenton also enjoyed success at the lower levels this season. The sophomore team went 16-12, while the freshman A group was 20-9 and the freshman B team was 16-6. Add it all up and Fenton’s boys basketball teams went 73-39.

“Our lower levels were successful,” Taft said. “That was great to see.”

Fenton will graduate seven seniors from the team. That list includes Reed, King, Alvarez, Bobby Kozy, 116 S. Main

Alex Kopec, Ivan Sosa and Detwan Yoakum. “We are happy for the seniors and happy that they kept making progress every year,” said Taft.

Taft said the program is night and day now from when he took it over several years ago.

“The attitude around school has changed and the number of people at games are packed now. Games are packed,” he said. “This senior class of kids for four years they never rooted for a winner. And now it’s just the kids who come to the games and the crowds we have. They are rooting for a 20-game winner. It’s huge for our community and our school.”

Fenton softball team looking to build upon success Five all-conference players return for Bison

The Fenton softball team is hoping to keep the strong momentum it built last season going at full tilt this spring.

Coach Dave Mello’s group went 23-13 a year ago and won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title with an 8-2 mark in its last season in that league. The Bison lost in a regional title game to Evanston.

Mello has plenty of reason to believe that momentum will keep growing with five all-conference performers returning, plus many more.

Back are all-MSC Red selections Alyssa Texta (senior catcher), Gianna Saldana (senior third baseman), Ashley Milano (senior left fielder), Cynthia Ibarra (junior pitcher/shortstop) and Claira Panos (junior pitcher, shortstop). Also back are seniors Joni Lucas (first base) and Gianna Mendoza (pitcher), as well as juniors Madison Spencer (center fielder) and Ashley Mitchell (pitcher-catcher), along with sophomore Ximena Ban-

uelos (catcher/utility).

Juniors Grace Mundelius, Alexis Mendoza, Alyssia Russo and Briana Contreras also are back. They played on the JV team last year, but played in a good number of varsity games as well as sophomores.

Key newcomers include freshmen Kaitlyn Hoffing (middle infielder) and Daniella Trentadue (pitcher/third baseman).

“It’s early, but the strength of this team so far is how close the team is already,” Mello said. “Last week they had an early release day and the girls organized a team lunch that none of the coaches even knew about until after. At practice, they all really enjoy being around each other. I think they are going to come back even closer after this break because they will realize just how much they missed being together.”

Mello said he will have plenty of options at the plate this season. “We are able to do a little bit of everything offensively,” he said. “We have girls who can hit for average, girls who can hit for power, girls who can slap and girls who can steal. We feel really good about our offense.”

Mello noted defensively, the Bison should be solid.

“Prior to this break, we were get-

ting a lot of defensive work in and you could see the improvement each day,” he said. “We had been outside four times already and were ready to go.”

Mello also likes where Fenton sits in the pitching department.

“Our pitching situation is really good,” he said. “We have five girls who we plan to rotate in the circle.

Gianna is the oldest of the five. We have three juniors in Cynthia, Ashley and Claira who are joined by Daniella, a freshman. Our early season plan is to use them all and see where we are after about a month of games.”

Fenton will play its first season in the Upstate Eight Conference this spring.

“The UEC is going to be a great challenge for us,” said Mello. “Glenbard South is always really good.

Bartlett has a very good team returning and adds a really good freshman pitcher. South Elgin is really good and has talent all over the field.”

Mello said the team has high hopes for the season.

“As a coaching staff we feel we have the girls to put together a special season,” he said. “Last season was very successful and we lost some key players. However, we have looked even better this season. We are sure

it may take some time to get rolling again once we get back together, but knowing how driven this team is will certainly help us. It was very difficult

(last week) when they found out we were being sent home. However, we know they will return ready to go whenever we are allowed to.”
