Man charged with fleeing police in a stolen vehicle/ cocaine possession Suspected vehicle allegedly hijacked in Chicago day prior

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced March 3 that bond has been set for a Gonzalo Cook County Guerrero man charged with attempting to flee police in a stolen motor vehicle.

Gonzalo Guerrero, 29, of Midlothian, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Brian Telander set bond at $1 million with 10 percent to apply. Guerrero has been charged with one count of aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle (Class 1 felony), three counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony), one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (Class 4 felony) and two traffic offenses.

On March 2 at approximately 1:30 p.m., an officer with the Elmhurst Police Department observed a 2020 Nissan near the intersection of St. Charles Road and Fair Avenue that was allegedly taken in an aggravated vehicular hijacking out of Chicago the previous day.

Pritzker issues updated COVID-19 executive order With Illinois continuing to see vast improvement in recent weeks of COVID-19 hospitalizations and transmission, Gov. JB Pritzker released an updated executive order on March 4, lifting the school exclusion requirements, shifting schools back to the ordinary processes for handling infectious diseases.

The executive order was initially put in place to standardize CDC requirements for schools and alleviate the burden on overwhelmed local health departments from having to provide individualized recommendations.

Now that the COVID-19 surge has subsided, schools and local health departments can return to exercising their longstanding authority to address infectious disease cases among students and staff.

The CDC and IDPH continue to strongly recommend that students, teachers, and staff stay home when they have a confirmed case of COVID-19 or have signs of any infectious illness, including COVID-19.

Schools should also continue to recommend that close contacts stay home and will continue to coordinate with their corresponding local health department to determine whether a close contact should stay home based on CDC guidance.

“As we move forward in our fight against COVID-19, schools should continue to look to their local health departments, IDPH and the CDC for guidance in dealing with this virus as they do for all communicable diseases,” said Pritzker. “By getting vaccinated and staying home when sick or when deemed necessary by local health departments, school communities can help ensure their classrooms are a safe place for all.”

“We are at a stage in this pandemic where we have more tools than ever before to help prevent severe illness due to COVID-19, including safe and effective vaccines and new treatments,” said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “With almost half of the entire Illinois population not only vaccinated, but boosted and up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines, as well as high levels of population immunity from both vaccination and infections, the risk of outbreaks causing severe illness is reduced. All schools continue to have long-standing authority under Illinois law to address confirmed, suspected, and contacts of infectious disease cases, including COVID-19. Just as they do with chickenpox, schools should send students with COVID-19 home.

CDC guidance The CDC recommends that everyone who has presumed or confirmed COVID-19 should stay home and isolate from other people for at least 5 full days (day 0 is the first day of symptoms or the date of the day of specimen collection for the positive viral test for asymptomatic persons).

They should wear a mask when around others for an additional 5 days.

For close contacts: CDC guidance continues to recommend that individuals who are not up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations stay at home and quarantine for at least 5 days after exposure to COVID-19 and wear a mask until day 10.

The CDC recommends that close contacts who are up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines or who are within 90 days of a COVID-19 infection do not need to quarantine.

Vaccination progress This executive order has no impact on the State of Illinois’ vaccination or testing requirements, which align with current CDC recommendations to screen unvaccinated school staff.

Additionally, school districts and private businesses can continue to require masks at their discretion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued revised guidance on Feb. 25, to lift its recommendation for universal indoor masking, including in K-12 settings.

Illinois continues to lead the Midwest for school-aged vaccination rates. No state has a higher percentage of fully vaccinated 5- to-17-year-olds.

Additionally, Illinois is home to the highest percentage of residents who have received a COVID-19 vaccine.

Biblical scholar to give women’s history lecture at Elmhurst University The Rev. Vanessa Lovelace, Ph.D., is a biblical scholar and associate dean and associate professor of Hebrew Bible/ Old Testament at Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pa. Her teaching and research interests include interpreting biblical texts using literary criticism and theory of gender and nation through a womanist lens.

Politics of Belonging,” this year’s Genevieve Staudt Intercultural Lecture at Elmhurst University. The program will be held in the Schaible Science Center, Illinois Hall on the campus of Elmhurst University.

EHM’s Oberg to receive ECCI Chairman’s Award

Dave Oberg, executive director of the Elmhurst History Museum, will receive the 2021 Chairman’s Award at the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 103rd Annual Awards Gala in the Frick Center at Elmhurst University on Friday, March 25, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Traditionally, the annual award is given to a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors for his/her outstanding service to the Board, Chairman Dave Oberg and President/CEO or to a non-Director for praiseworthy contributions or performance.

Oberg has served as EHM’s Executive Director since 2017 and also provides administrative assistance to the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization established in 2007 by the merger of the Elmhurst Historical Museum Foundation (founded 1992) and the City of Elmhurst’s Historical Commission.

During Oberg’s tenure, the Museum has broaden its locally-themed exhibits—including the latest in tribute to Elmhurst University’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary (150 years)—and has partnered with the Foundation to grow the Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest (started in 2016) and co-host Business After Hours each November for Chamber members.

Under Oberg’s directorship, EHM won the Illinois Association of Museum’s (IAM) Superior Achievement Awards for Special Projects (2021), the American Association for State and Local History Award of Excellence for Exhibits (2020), and IAM Awards of Excellence for Exhibits (2019) and Special Projects (2018).

It is alleged that from June 2017, through July of 2020, Zielinski engaged in multiple identity theft schemes to illegally obtain funds from not only several private banks but also from the United States government through a Small Business Administration Economic Injury Disaster Loan related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

promise scheme in which she would hack a private business’ email account. Once she allegedly had access to the victim’s email, Zielinski would then direct the business’ bank to send money to another bank account controlled by Zielinski. “The charges against Beata Zielinski are the result of a painstakingly thorough investigation led by Ken Tatarelis, supervisor of my office’s Public Integrity/Financial Crimes Division,” Berlin said. “White collar crimes, as alleged in this case, are often times extremely difficult to detect as the accused will make every attempt to erase any paper trail that may lead to them. This case was no different.”

Zielinski’s next court date took place March 3 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

Police were called to the scene at 11:48 a.m. March 3 after someone from a nearby horse stable reported finding a deceased male in the preserve, DuPage Forest Preserve District Police Chief David Pederson said.

“According to law enforcement sources the man had suspected gang affiliations and had been missing since Jan. 3,” Pederson said.

Elmhurst residents still have family and relatives living in war-torn Ukraine

The eyes of the world have been focused on Ukraine ever since Russia launched a full-scale invasion Feb. 24, but Yuriy and Galina Veselovsky of Elmhurst have a vested interest in what’s happening there.

Originally from Ukraine, Yuriy and Galina lived in Ukraine’s Lviv province, located in the western part of the country (close to the Polish border) before moving to the United States in 1995. They resided in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village for five years and have been in Elmhurst since 2000.

Yuriy and Galina still have family and relatives living in Ukraine.

Yuriy’s father and mother (ages 87 and 82, respectively), along with his brother and his brother’s children, live in Lviv. He and Galina also have aunts and cousins that live in different regions of Ukraine.

Interviewed recently by the Independent, Yuriy mentioned that he talks to his mother, father and brother several times throughout the day. He said neither his parents nor his brother plan on leaving their home.

“They (his parents) said, ‘We’re

ready to die if we need to,’ but they can’t really help because of their age,” Yuriy said. “My brother said, ‘No, we’re not leaving. I need to watch my parents and I need to support the country.’ ” Since the invasion, Yuriy said “we haven’t had normal sleep.”

“We sleep maybe just three or four hours or less,” said Yuriy, who works as a quality manager at Lewis Plastics in Addison. “The first day (of the invasion) we were staying up until 4 a.m. because there’s eight hours difference between Ukraine and here.”

Yuriy said he and Galina keep abreast of developments in their homeland by accessing different sources of information—including Ukraine TV and other channels available online—“to understand exactly how severe the situation is right now.”

Their Elmhurst neighbors, Galina said, “Have been very helpful,” since the war started.

“The day the war started in the early morning, I started seeing text messages of support,” she said. “It’s very devastating. Unfortunately, the only thing we can do is pray.”

Assault intensifies Over the past several days, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expanded and intensified Russia’s assault on Ukraine, which is now in its second week. On March 4, a European Union official said “the Russians are bombing and shelling everything (in Ukraine). Hospitals, houses, schools. A lot of civilian casualties.”

That same day, Russian forces seized and took control of the nuclear power plant in the city of Zaporizhzhia, located in southeastern Ukraine. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

Several European nations are sending anti-tank weapons, small arms and ammunition, and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine, while the U.S. is sending Javelin anti-tank weapons, Stinger missiles, body armor and various munitions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged the West to implement a no-fly zone over Ukraine (which has been rejected by NATO), but Yuriy suggested what Ukraine needs is an air defense system to shoot down incoming Russian ballis-

Russia’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine and U.S. response

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi President Vladimir Putin has launched an unjustified invasion of Ukraine that has already taken the lives of thousands of civilians and military forces while threatening the sovereignty of the democratic country of Ukraine.

This aggression by an authoritarian leader must be met with the strongest condemnation and punishment by the United States and our allies as we continue to provide all necessary supplies to the Ukrainian people.

The United States has joined with democracies across the world to dramatically expand sanctions on Russia to hold Vladimir Putin and his oligarchs accountable for the needless destruction and suffering they have caused. These sanctions include cutting off Russia’s largest bank from the U.S financial system, excluding Russian banks from the main international payment system, and sanctioning President Putin as well as his inner circle.

Additionally, U.S. military personnel have been dispatched

to Europe to bolster our defensive presence in support of our NATO allies and to facilitate the continuing flow of resources and ammunition to the Ukrainian people.

In the face of Russia’s barbaric invasion, the United States must continue to stand with the people of Ukraine as they defend their homeland, their freedom, and their right of self-government from Vladimir Putin. Russia will be punished on the international stage for this act of war, affront to international laws, and humanitarian tragedy.

I was honored to join the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) in Chicago for their rally and prayer for the people of Ukraine and President Zelenskyy.

Recently, President Zelenskyy was offered an opportunity to be evacuated to safety but he refused, insisting on staying in the fight and telling American officials “I need ammunition, not a ride.”

We must ensure that he and the Ukrainian people have it and the support they need to drive Putin’s forces from their country.

Scraping the paint

I’ve taken up a new hobby: painting. I don’t paint walls or houses. I keep it smaller—to canvases, coasters and such. It’s not painting like you might think.

My new leisure pursuit involves no brushes or rollers.

What it lacks in brushes, this technique makes up for in paint.

I literally pour it onto the canvas and let it flow. I might spin it. I might blow on it with a blow dryer or a straw, but what it comes down to is paint consistency and letting it all just flow where it may.

It’s called acrylic pour painting and it’s rather addictive. It allows you to create art without the control that art typically encompasses – although the more involved and knowledgeable I become in the process, the more I realize the lack of control is but an illusion. It is control without control, which is the epitome of art, not to mention cool.

It’s been a real learning curve.

Continues to be, for that matter.

One thing I’ve come to understand is that not every piece is a masterpiece. Welcome to the world of Rembrandt and Da Vinci, not that I’d know for sure, but I suspect most artists—even the great ones—had their share of learning curves.

It was hard, at first to acknowledge that I’d painted a failure. None of us wants to create a failure. But, I could tell that I’d pushed the paint too far. Maybe the colors got muddy. Maybe they flowed where they weren’t supposed to flow. Maybe they just looked plain old meh.

Whatever the outcome, many of mine didn’t measure up to expectations.

At first, I left them to dry, hoping maybe they’d somehow improve themselves during the process. Naivety is often a gift. It keeps us going when others might look our way and roll their eyes.

After a few dried failures and my own eye rolls, I realized I was only wasting canvases and paint— and those things aren’t free. My naivety flew out the window and was replaced by pragmatism.

Creating beauty is one thing, wasting money is another.

It was then that I learned the art—and the practicality—of the

scrape.

If I didn’t want to waste a canvas, I realized had to kill my own darlings (to coin a phrase from Stephen King). As much as I wanted to love my canvas creations, I knew they weren’t going to hang on anyone’s wall— not even my own. So I had to scrape them.

I had to pull the paint off and start anew.

It’s like everything in life. Some days it’s all good and other days it’s a scrape. But even on the most scrapiest of days, I’ve learned we shouldn’t give up. Even a scrape teaches us something new.

It teaches us that even though we may need a do-over, there is still something worth saving.

We are still worthy of a second or third (or fourth) try. Scraping means salvaging what we can and moving forward with it. Pour your scraped paint into a cup and use it on another try on another day.

Who knows, your next pour might be a keeper.

It may ever be your most beautiful one yet.

plaints of cronobacter and salmonella infections in infants who consumed powdered infant formula produced at Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, Michigan facility.

“Infants have a high risk of complications from infections with cronobacter and salmonella,” says Victoria Uribe, M.D., pediatrician with Elmhurst Clinic. “Parents should call their pediatrician right away if their baby exhibits symptoms of these infections.”

Symptoms of a cronobacter or salmonella infection, include: • Poor feeding

• Irritability • Temperature changes • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) • Grunting breaths • Abnormal movements • Lethargy • Rash • Blood in the urine or stool In the meantime, between supply chain delays and the recall, infant formula has been more difficult to find.

There are options: • Check with the baby’s pediatrician.

Pediatricians and OB/GYNs often

have samples of formula in their offices. They can also suggest substitutions or potential new sources.

• It’s okay to switch brands. Parents should not switch types of formula, like swapping cow’s milk protein-based formula for soy.

• Shop around. Smaller stores may have formula in stock. Infant formula can also be purchased directly from the manufacturer. The Infant Nutritional Council of America warns against buying infant formula from individuals, such as at flea markets, on e-commerce websites, or on internet auction

sites.

The products may have been improperly stored or shipped, which can affect the quality of the formula. Always check containers for punctures, dents or evidence of potential tampering, and check the use-by date on each container before buying and/or using.

• Don’t try to dilute formula to make it last longer. Parents should not try to make their own formula, either.

Straying from the recommended usage could cause health problems for your baby. Get more information at EEHealth.org/services/children.

2022 Ruth Strand Reading Challenge

Every year, the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and the Elmhurst History Museum honor the legacy of Ms. Ruth Strand, the longtime Head Librarian at the Elmhurst Public Library, an avid historian, and dedicated Elmhurst History Museum founding board member and volunteer. This year, her passion for literacy and history will come together in a new initiative: The Ruth Strand Reading Challenge.

During the month of March, Elmhurst students in 2nd-5th grade are invited to log a list of history-related books that they read throughout the month. Students who read at least 15 books can return the

completed book log to the Elmhurst History Museum gift shop during the month of April and they will receive a free treat from Kilwin’s, courtesy of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation.

Students should include the book title and author, and a parent or guardian must sign off on each entry. A bonus for your school: Schools that have at least 20 participants will also receive a $100 donation to their school’s library.

The Museum hopes students will join us in honoring one of Elmhurst’s finest while embracing two things Ruth Strand loved: books and history! If you have any

Who was Ruth Strand?

Born in Chicago in 1904, Ruth Strand moved to Elmhurst with her family in 1915.

While attending York Community High School, she began a long career of public service at Elmhurst Public Library as a high school page. Strand earned library science degrees from Northwestern and Columbia Universities and went on to serve 20 years as head librarian in Elmhurst until her retirement in 1968.

Strand had a keen sense for helping patrons find books they didn’t know they wanted or needed.

She spearheaded the addition of a new wing to the old library building in 1965 that included The Ruth Strand Children’s Room.

Ruth Strand also had an avid interest in the history of Elmhurst. After her retirement she became an active volunteer at Elmhurst History Museum and contributed to several volumes on the city’s history.

The Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and the Elmhurst History Museum proudly honor her contributions to the community through the Ruth Strand Reading Challenge.

Chief Judge Popejoy vacates order requiring masks in courthouse Chief Judge Kenneth L. Popejoy entered an Administrative Order on Friday, Feb. 25, which vacates the mask requirement in the DuPage County Courthouse. Masks will be welcomed and encouraged for anyone who wishes to wear one, or for those who need to wear a mask to protect the health of themselves or their loved ones. However, masks will no longer be required in the courthouse.

“Our goal has always been to keep our employees and courthouse visitors as safe as possible,” Chief Judge Popejoy stated. “We have a state-of-the-art ventilation system which continuously circulates and disinfects the air along with thermal screening at the entrances to the courthouse. These measures, along with continued social distancing, enhanced cleaning protocols and the use of Zoom throughout the courthouse, have allowed the 18th Judicial Circuit to continue the efficient administration of justice throughout the pandemic.”

Entry to the courthouse will continue to be prohibited if a person has flu-like symptoms, has been directed by a medical professional to quarantine or isolate, or if residing with a person currently sick with COVID-19.

House passes paid leave for vaccinated teachers Republicans call bill a vaccine mandate

The Illinois House passed a bill last week that would give teachers, professors and other educational employees paid leave if they miss work for COVID-19-related issues, but only if they’ve been fully vaccinated.

The House voted 70-28, with only Democrats voting in favor, to advance House Bill 1167, which would make the benefit retroactive to the start of the 2021-22 academic year.

The bill is similar to one that lawmakers passed with broad bipartisan support during last year’s fall veto session, but which Gov. JB Pritzker

vetoed in January because it did not include a vaccine requirement.

“Well over 90 percent of teachers and staff would see a great, positive impact from this bill and I know they would all appreciate your support to pass this bill,” Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville, said during floor debate on the proposal.

But the vaccine requirement turned the new bill into a harshly partisan issue with Republicans calling it an unfair “vaccine mandate.”

from someone else who also was fully vaccinated. “So, the idea that vaccine is stopping the spread of COVID in schools is absolutely nonsense. The reality is this is a mandate.”

The bill would apply to vaccinated K-12 and higher education employees who take time off because they or a family member contracts COVID-19. It would also apply to employees who miss work because the school where they work is forced to close due to a COVID-19 outbreak, unless those days are later rescheduled.

Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, argued that Illinois is already suffering from a shortage of teachers and that passage of the bill would send a message that the state values the work they do.

“Legislation like this that shows the respect for the profession and understanding the nature of the work that they do is how we are going to help fight our teacher shortage crisis,” she said. “We have to show that we respect teachers. We want teachers to be supported in their classrooms.”

Republicans, however, argued that the bill unfairly discriminates in the way employee benefits are provided to educators on the basis of vaccination status because it provides a greater benefit to a vaccinated worker than an unvaccinated one even if neither contracts the virus.

“If the teacher is fully vaccinated and her kid is ill, she can take the admin days,” said Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield. “But if the teacher is unvaccinated in that same situation, the kid’s ill, he or she does not get the benefit of those admin days.”

The bill will head to the Senate for further consideration before it can head to Gov. JB Pritzker.

Both Yuriy and Galina are supportive of Zelenskyy, whom some have compared to Winston Churchill—Great Britain’s prime minister during World War II—given Zelenskyy’s defiance in the face of the Russian invasion. The United States offered Zelenskyy a chance to evacuate from the capital city of Kyiv, but he refused.

“The fight is here. I need ammunition, not a ride,” Zelenskyy told the U.S. “He’s one of the best presidents we’ve had so far,” Yuriy said. “Everything we’ve seen, his commands, his decision-making, everyone in Ukraine trusts him even more.”

“He definitely fights and stands for Ukraine,” Galina said.

Donations to Ukraine Yuriy and Galina’s son and daughter attend Bryan Middle School in Elmhurst. The school is currently collecting food that eventually will be shipped to Ukraine.

Yuriy and Galina also have been collecting donations for the people of Ukraine at Lions Club International headquarters in Oak Brook (where she works) and Lewis Plastics.

They urge anyone who wants to make a financial donation to donate to the following:
