Tom Cullerton champions government transparency, accountability measure To promote government transparency and

accountability, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) championed the passage of the Illinois Debt Transparency Act. Cullerton joined the Illinois Senate in voting to override Governor Rauner’s veto of House Bill 3649, which requires state agencies to provide a more accurate accounting of bills and late payment interest penalties accruing.

“Illinois taxpayers deserve to know how their money is spent,” Cullerton said. “This measure encourages responsible budgeting and the honest use of taxpayer dollars. I’m glad the Illinois Senate worked together in a bipartisan manner to take the necessary steps to promote a fiscally-sound budget. ” Currently, state law requires that on October 1 agencies report the annual aggregate amount of pending unpaid bills that were being held as of June 30. The comptroller’s office then publishes the outdated information on their website.

This new law will now require state agencies to report the amount of unpaid bills, whether that amount was appropriated or not and an estimate of interest penalties accumulated on a monthly basis.

“This new law will promote help promote fiscal responsibility,” Cullerton said. “Good government begins with accountability and transparency. State officials and agencies have an obligation to be transparent and open with the way we spend valuable state dollars.”

Cullerton believes real-time accounting will help the state’s financial officers as well the General Assembly have a realistic outlook on state finances when making budgetary decisions.

Opera made accessible to elementary students in Addison

Excitement and energy filled the auditorium at Addison Trail High School as 1,894 elementary school students anticipated the production of “The Scorpions Sting” held on Oct. 26.

The Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Lyric Unlimited performance is part of their “Opera in the Neighborhoods” initiative. Each student was given a guide to opera (defined as a play in which most or all of the words are sung). The age appropriate booklet called the Back Stage Pass explained details about the performance, including the cast, plot, costumes and scenery.

“The Scorpions Sting” is a delightful story that takes place in the Egyptian dessert where a group of archaeology students try to find their professor who, unfortunately, has been stung by a scorpion. While attempting to find a cure to the professors wound, the group stumbles upon the Lost Temple of Isis, the ancient Egyptian Goddess of Healing and by reading the hieroglyphs the mythological story unfolds.

Addison Center for the Arts is proud to have been the first in the Chicagoland area to present the “Opera in the Neighborhoods” 23 years ago.

A delegation of visitors from China spent the afternoon on Friday, Nov. 10 observing students and classrooms at the Addison Early Learning Center and Ardmore School. The visitors got to see instruction in a number of different classrooms for students from age 3 to 10 (preschool through 5th grade).

District administrators shared information about the structure of the school day, class sizes, and the number of staff members. Small groups of the visitors toured the school building, getting to see examples of speech therapy, physical education, math, art, and reading classes, after which they discussed ways in which District 4’s schools differ from schools in China.

District 88 hosts reception on Veterans Day On Nov. 10, Addison Trail and Willowbrook High Schools welcomed veterans and first responders in honor of Veterans Day (Nov. 11).

Willowbrook hosted a breakfast for members of the Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 and other veterans, as well as the Villa Park Police Department, the Villa Park Fire Department and local service organizations. Participants also visited with social studies classes, and American flags lined the entryway to Willowbrook.

Addison Trail invited members of the Addison Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7446 and other veterans, as well as the Addison Police Department and the Addi-

son Fire Protection District, to a luncheon. Participants watched a video and saw a display in the media center that featured photos and items of veterans with a connection to Addison Trail or the Village of Addison.

Both schools also recognized current students who plan to serve in the military.

During those Veterans Day events, Addison Trail and Willowbrook were presented with relics from the USS Arizona (12-by-12-

inch pieces of the deckhouse), a battleship that was sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Each school also received a copy of the book “All the Gallant Men,” signed by co-author and USS Arizona survivor Donald

Conroy votes for property tax freeze, expanded relief

State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) joined members of the Illinois House on Wednesday, Nov. 8, to pass a 2-year property tax freeze and expand property tax relief for DuPage County families and seniors.

“Property taxes in DuPage County get higher and higher every year, making our communities less affordable for so many working fam-

ilies,” she said. “This bill provides some relief to the middle class and seniors while ensuring that homeowners in our community get the same property tax relief that those in Cook County are already receiving.

Senate Bill 851 implements a two-year property tax freeze in the suburbs, including DuPage County. The bill also increases the general homestead and senior citizens

homestead exemptions to $10,000 and $8,000, respectively, to give homeowners additional relief. Cook County homeowners currently receive this level of relief.

“This legislation is a bipartisan effort to give homeowners a little bit of relief from unaffordable property taxes,” Conroy added. “This is one step to provide relief to struggling families across the state.”

Eric Brant named new resource officer at Addison Trail A new School Resource Officer has joined the team at Addison Trail – but he’s a familiar face to the community.

Addison Police Department Detective Eric Brant took on that role starting Oct. 16, and he succeeds Cristobol (Cris) Soto, who filled that position since May 2014. Brant might be new to Addison Trail, but he has been with the Addison Police Department for more than 12 years.

Brant joined the police force after working in construction for 13 years.

He said he always wanted to be a police officer and is thrilled to be pursuing that career.

“I want to be a positive light and influence for people to help them during good times and times of need,” he said.

Addison Trail Principal Michael Bolden said the school is thrilled to welcome Brant, and he knows Brant will continue the excellent work Soto and previous School Resource Officers have established.

“Our #1 priority is the safety and security of our students and staff, and the School Resource Officer position is one more way for us to ensure the well-being of everyone in our building,” he said. “We look forward to working with Detective Brant and continuing a tremendous partnership with the Addison Police Department.”

Youthful Addison Trail girls basketball team ready to roll Blazers excited about returning seniors and abundance of junior talent

The list of players who saw significant playing time for the Addison Trail girls basketball team isn’t very long.

But that short list features a trio of key contributors for coach Rob Schader’s squad, which is coming off a 2016-2017 season where it went 11-17 overall and 3-9 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action. Back for the Blazers with significant playing time a year ago under their belt are seniors Nicci Scorza (guard), Berenice Beruman (post) and Vincenza Zaccaro (guard).

“All three of them played signifi-

cant minutes last year,” said Schader. Senior Sandy Herrera and junior Angelina Carreras also are back and will help the Blazers. “Sandy has a very smart basketball sense and Angelina is another player who will help us out,” said Schader.

Juniors Joanna Garay, Brenda Beruman (Berenice’s sister), Karime Martinez and Serena Gilliam are key newcomers.

“Joanna came up at the end of the year and ran the point for us and will be our starting point guard this year,” said Schader.

“Brenda will be our backup point guard and will play significant minutes. Karime will be our sixth player

and might start for us a little bit. Serena is a post player who will start. We have quite a few juniors who will play significant minutes.”

Scorza is in her third year on the varsity, while Zaccaro will be counted on for her outside shot. “Nicci will play some post and guard for sure for us,’ said Schader.

“Vincenza is a shooting guard who will hopefully hit some 3s for us. She plays great defensively as well.” Gilliam, Martinez and Scorza will be counted on in the rebounding department. “Those three will be big rebounders,” said Schader. ‘We are not huge, but we have some length depending on the lineup we put out

there.”

Schader enjoys the team’s commitment to bettering its craft.

“They work hard, that’s one of our biggest strengths,” he said.

“These are basketball kids who have come through our feeder program. This is one of the first true groups that has come through from the feeder program and we are reaping the benefits of that. They are true basketball kids.”

Schader lists defense as a key component to the team’s seasons. “We will have to grind it out on defense and hold teams,” he said.

“We will play a lot of man and will pressure at times. We’re going to play a lot of kids so that will help out. The

focus defensively is what will keep us in games.”

In terms of the WSC Gold, Schader said Proviso East comes into the season as the favorite.

“Proviso has pretty much everybody back and they all are seniors,” he said. “They have a couple pretty good guards. Downers South will be up there as well and Hinsdale South is not bad. They have a standout junior. Everybody else should be fairly even with the exception of Proviso and Downers. We are going to improve as the season goes on. With all the juniors playing, we are going to be a work in progress in the beginning.

The good thing is they all work hard.”

Fenton’s Barriga named Metro Suburban Blue boys soccer MVP after outstanding offensive performance CORRESPONDENT

Fenton senior boys soccer player Angel Barriga had a season to remember.

Barriga scored 35 goals and had 24 assists for a Bison team that went 17-7-1.

In doing so, Barriga earned an all-sectional nomination and was named the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division MVP, while also receiving a certificate and patch for being named a player of the week in the month of September from the schedule and statistics website Max Preps.

“It’s a pretty nice accomplishment,” said Barriga of being named the conference MVP. “I definitely worked very hard for it.”

Barriga said his motivation for this season was simple.

“This year is my last year,” he said.

“I wanted to go out with a statement.

I was out to prove I was one of the best players in the state. I feel good about the season I had.”

Barriga said the mental aspect of his game helped him put up the numbers he did. “My mindset helped me look forward and score goals,” he

said. “I created many opportunities for myself.”

But Barriga is quick to point out those gaudy numbers he put up would not be possible without the help of his Bison teammates, who he heavily praised.

“My teammates were a big factor,” he said. “Without them I wouldn’t have the MVP award. They were always helping me on the field and setting me up for big plays. I was able to help them as well.”

Barriga said team chemistry helped Fenton rack up 17 wins this season. “What I liked the most about this team is the chemistry,” he said.

“We all got along on and off the pitch. We figured out together what we needed to change.”

Barriga started playing the sport at the age of five. “My dad found me kicking a ball around in the yard so he put me in soccer,” he explained.

“I’ve been doing it ever since. My dad has been a big help to me. He helps me with soccer and does the best for me.”

Barriga said he most definitely would like to play the sport at the next level and would like to study either business management, history or

AT-Willowbrook junior Elissa Haake will return to the state finals meet in both the 100 and the 200.

Haake finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.51 and also took second in the 100 with a time of 52:02.

Haake won both events last year at the sectional level to earn state berths.

She will compete in the state finals meet this weekend at New Trier High School in Winnetka.

“I got into gymnastics last year and joined the team,” he said. “My favorite event is the pommel horse.”

Back to soccer, Barriga was asked the hard question of his favorite goal out of all the ones he scored this season.

“The best is probably against either Maine East or Maine West in the

finals of the Addison Trail tournament,” he said. “I scored a goal that gave our team the lead.”

And what goes through Barriga’s mind when finds the back of the net?

“Happiness,” he said. “Scoring a goal is excellent and I get happy and look forward to scoring the next one.”

For Barriga, there were plenty of next ones this season.

It is no secret that the holiday season can be a stressful time. With family gatherings, office parties, gift exchanges, and other demands on our time and attention, the final month of the year can be a trying time for even the most optimistic and enthusiastic people.

For individuals who suffer

from or are at risk for depression, though, the impact of holiday stresses and pressures can be much more severe than the momentary frustrations that almost everyone experiences.

For example, some of the common triggers for the onset of a depressive episode, such as feeling overwhelmed, experiencing a sense of isolation or deprivation, and having personal conflicts, are also common holiday experi-

ences.

For individuals who are at risk for depression, here are five simple tips that can help keep triggers at bay during the holiday season: Stay Organized – Considerable holiday stress is related to feeling overwhelmed or out of time. Planning ahead can help eliminate or ease some of this pressure.

Learn to Say No – You do not have to accept every invitation that comes your way.

Giving yourself time to relax and decompress during the holidays is more important than yet another party.

Set Realistic Expectations – There is no such thing as a “perfect holiday,” and trying to create one is an invitation to disappointment. On the other side of the coin, don’t allow dread to destroy your ability to enjoy the season.

Take Care of Yourself – Sugary and high-fat foods, which are staples during the

holidays, can drain your energy and increase your risk getting sick. Enjoy a sweet here and there, but do not abandon your healthy diet. Also, make sure that you are getting some exercise and enough sleep.

Get Help When You Need It – The holidays are definitely not the time to go it alone.

From an extra set of hands in the kitchen to the therapeutic insights of a professional counselor, ask for help when you need it.

Memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease: The basics that should be evaluated by a medical professional. Topics that will be covered include: common causes of memory loss, risk factors and the importance of an accurate diagnosis.

Willowbrook’s Palma focuses on improvement and reaps rewards Cross-country and academic standout qualified for state meet this season

Following an example of success opened Willowbrook junior girls cross-country runner Victoria Palma’s eyes.

Palma cited the case study of Evanston senior runner Enyaeva Michelin.

“The Evanston girl who finished second in the state (this season) did the extra work and got down to the 16s (16 minutes),” said Palma. “She was in the 18:40s as a junior. Something like that is possible. It’s possible to do that if you have a plan to work hard like that.”

Palma, like Michelin, enjoyed her own improvement renaissance this fall, earning a spot in the Class 3A state finals meet earlier this month.

She improved her state time 20 seconds from her sectional finish a week prior and finished in 77th place in Class 3A. “The state meet was really cool weather,” she said. “It was nice. It was foggy and there were nice sur-

Willowbrook football team loses to Prairie Ridge

The quarterfinal round of the state football playoffs has not been kind to the Willowbrook football team recently.

For the second year in a row, the Warriors saw their season come to an end in the quarterfinals, this time via a 42-7 loss to host Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge in the Class 6A division.

Willowbrook finished the season with a 10-2 record. Prairie Ridge improved to 12-0 and will play in the state semifinals at Hoffman Estates (10-2) on Saturday with a berth in the Class 6A title game on the line.

Willowbrook, which lost to East St. Louis in the quarterfinals last year, reached the state quarterfinals in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1974 and 1975 and also won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title and its first outright conference title since 1982.

Prairie Ridge, the defending Class 6A state champion that has won 26 games in a row, led 7-0 after the first quarter and 14-0 at one point in the second quarter before Nick Sabatino caught a touchdown pass from quarterback John Taylor to cut the lead to 14-7.

That’s as close as Willowbrook would get the rest of the way. Prairie Ridge scored the game’s final 28 points to punch its ticket to the state semifinals.

roundings and I was running against the best runners in Illinois. It was crazy. There were a lot more people there—way more than I was used to seeing. I think I ran pretty well. Having good competition kept me motivated the whole race.”

Palma said she has been working on not starting too fast in a race. “I tend to start way too fast,” she said.

“I used a strategy to start way slower, but my first mile still was 30 seconds faster. The first 400 was way more controlled. I usually go out way faster. You don’t win a race in the first 400.”

Palma ran 5:38 in her first mile and then turned in identical 6:11 times for the final two.

Palma said part of her improvement this season stemmed from focusing more on the craft.

“Freshman and sophomore years I was spread way too thin,” she said.

“I was doing youth orchestra in Elgin and was on the speech team at school. I didn’t rest and I didn’t dedicate. Focusing in on running helped out.”

Palma added the workouts of Willowbrook coach Clyde Ware helped.

“His workouts give me motivation,” she said. “His workouts work for me really well.”

Palma noted she’s dropped two minutes off her time from the beginning of the year.

“We opened the season at Detweiller (home of the state meet in Peoria) and I ran 20:04 and I finished the season at Detweiller running 18:00 (18:01),” she said.

Away from school, Palma played

the cello from seventh grade to sophomore year in the Elgin youth orchestra program.

“My older sister played it and I thought it was pretty cool,” she said.

“The program there is amazing. It’s a nice program and they pick really nice music. They make you understand the background of the music.

Last year it was how music is political. It’s not about only learning the notes there. You get to understand what’s behind the music. They create a whole person, not just a musician.”

Palma is no slouch in the classroom either where she is ranked first in the Willowbrook junior class.

“I like working hard in school,” she said. “I’d like to think the hard work shows.”

Palma, who is interested in running in college, got into running after participating in track as a middle schooler. “I got put into the 800 run and I did really good,” she said. “I got serious about running in high school.”

And Palma has made quite the transformation in just three years.

“It’s been quite a dramatic improvement from freshman year,” she said. “Now I’m running every day the past few years. I’ve grown and learned how to run effectively.”

Palma is ready to take the next step forward for the Warriors.

“I really want to get into the 16s,” she said. “I also want to help Willowbrook get better. I have great teammates. There has been a change of culture and girls are serious about running. I am really motivated for next year.”

IC Catholic Prep football team headed to state semifinals

It’s back to the state semifinals for the IC Catholic Prep football team.

The Knights continued defense of their Class 3A state title with a 46-21 victory over Wilmington in Class 3A state quarterfinal action at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 11-1 overall and puts it in the semifinals Saturday against Byron, which defeated Williamsville 13-0 in another quarterfinal game.

IC Catholic Prep is the No. 5 seed on the top half of the Class 3A bracket, while Byron, located west of Rockford on Illinois 72, is the No. 3 seed. Byron is undefeated at 120. The winner of Saturday’s game heads to the state finals at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb on Thanksgiving weekend.

In the win against Wilmington, a team the Knights also defeated last year in the playoffs, quarterback CJ West completed 5 of 8 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

The Knights racked up 293 yards rushing on only 22 carries (13.3 yards per carry). Lazerick Eatman ran eight times for 227 yards and

scored three touchdowns. He had a 90-yard run and also scored a twopoint conversion. West ran eight times for 52 yards and a touchdown, while Kyle Franklin ran five times for 11 yards.

Eatman has now run for 1,232 yards and has 19 rushing touchdowns, while West has 24 passing touchdowns against only three interceptions and has thrown for 1,681 yards.

Khali Saunders caught two passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Lytton had a 36-yard touchdown catch, while Kevin Cooke had two catches for 28 yards.

The Knights amassed 384 yards of total offense.

On defense, Cooke led the way with 17 tackles. Kemon Reese had eight tackles, while Michael Johnson and Kevin Akins each had seven.

Ryan Malek had six tackles. Koby Reed recorded one quarterback sack.

Khali Saunders had a 25-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Cooke caused a fumble and recovered one. Johnson also had a fumble recovery, while Khalil Saunders had a pass deflection.

The Knights now are 25-1 over the last two seasons.

Ice skating at Red Arrow Park Glide across the ice in a beautiful downtown park setting with Slice of Ice. This outdoor rink is open December through February for an extra-long skating season. The refrigerated rink can accommodate 100 skaters at a time and is bordered by a railing, so even the newest of skaters can still enjoy the ice. Visit the warming house for a coffee, beer or bakery goody. With floor-to-ceiling windows, you’ll still have a view of everything on the ice.

Keep some helpful tips in mind to ensure another safe hunting season in Wisconsin

It is no accident Wisconsin is known nationally as one of the safest places to hunt deer for the whole family and friends.

“This state is fortunate to have thousands of volunteer hunter education instructors dedicated to keeping everyone safe while enjoying the outdoors,” Hunter Education Administrative Warden Jon King said. “And you have to credit the hunters who carry on that safety priority during their own hunts and as mentors. This is what makes Wisconsin a great hunting state - the people.”

How does Wisconsin keep the safety trend alive? King says more incidents can be prevented by following these four basic principles of firearm safety - known as TABK: Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.

Be certain of your target and what is beyond it.

Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.
