“Addison Public Library was awarded the Census 2020: It Counts!

Grant because they demonstrated a strong and creative outreach plan to get the word out about the Census, particularly with hard-to-count populations, through their internal and external programming,” said de la Fuente. “The library has strong partnerships with many local organizations in the community and they are working collaboratively to accomplish a complete count. We are pleased to be working with them.”

Mike Monahan, Head of Adult Services at the Addison Public Library, has been working with library staff and community partners, including the Village of Addison, to develop a plan to promote the census.

“The library is printing promotional materials in the most widely spoken languages in Addison and distributing them throughout the Village,” said Monahan. “Library staff will also be in the community assisting residents with the online questionnaire and will always be available inside the library to answer any census questions.”

Census promotions kick off with an evening with Representative Kathleen Willis at the library on Thursday, March 12 from 7:00-8:30 p.m., where Willis will discuss the

The Addison Public Library received a subgrant for $10,000 from the Reaching Across Illinois Library System’s (RAILS) Census 2020: It Counts! project, funded by the Pritzker Administration and the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), in order to help support the Addison community’s efforts to reach a complete count for the 2020 Census.

The group of 20 subgrantees made up of libraries, social service agencies, and county-level organizations will focus on six hard-to-count populations as outlined by IDHS. Hard-tocount populations consist of children younger than five years old, renters, people living close to or below the poverty line, older adults, people experiencing homelessness, and people who are young and mobile.

Each subgrant recipient is a safe place for anyone to receive assistance in completing the census questionnaire; staff can address fears about the confidentiality of census data, help visitors access free internet to complete the census online, and answer other questions about counting their household. RAILS Census 2020 Program Manager Amy de la Fuente was impressed with the Addison Public Library’s plan to work individually and with community partners to work towards a complete count for the Addison community.

Sandoval pleads guilty to bribery and tax fraud In plea deal, former state senator agrees to cooperate with ongoing investigations

By Peter Hancock Former state Sen. Martin Sandoval entered a plea deal Jan. 28 in which he admitted to receiving more than $250,000 in bribes over a threeyear period and filing a false tax return.

In exchange for his plea, Sandoval agreed to cooperate with federal investigators in other ongoing investigations and he will not face sentencing until he is finished cooperating. That cooperation includes the possibility of testifying against other defendants who may be charged.

The plea deal was announced jointly by John R. Lausch Jr., U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, along with officials from the Chicago office of the FBI, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General.

The bribery charge stems largely from Sandoval’s relationship with a company that installs and operates red light cameras for local governments in the Chicago area. Those are devices that automatically photograph and issue citations to people who fail to come to a full stop at red lights. Revenue collected from those citations typically is split between the municipality and the camera company.

The plea agreement spells out a list of facts to which Sandoval has admitted. It includes an admission that, beginning in 2016, Sandoval solicited and received $20,000 in annual campaign contributions from an entity prosecutors referred to as “Company A,” but which is widely believed to be SafeSpeed LLC, a company identified in a search warrant that federal agents executed on Sandoval’s Statehouse office in September.

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times each reported that during Tuesday’s hearing in federal court, Sandoval inadvertently identified the company when he said, “I used my office as state senator to help SafeSpeed—er, company A ... (and) be its protector in the Illinois senate and influence other officials to roll out the red-light

including more than $10,000 he received in bribes.

Sandoval, 56, of Chicago, resigned his 11th District Senate seat effective Jan. 1. He has since been succeeded by former Rep. Celina

Villanueva, also of Chicago.

The plea agreement was announced on the opening day of the Illinois General Assembly’s 2020 session, where calls for significant ethics reforms are expected to be a major issue.

In 2017, according to the agreement, Sandoval asked a company official to break up those annual payments into smaller amounts that would show up in different reporting periods.

“Kind of, just kind of not make it obvious,” Sandoval said to the company official, according to the agreement, not knowing that the person was cooperating with investigators.

In March 2018, according to the agreement, Sandoval accepted $10,000 in cash from the company, “to be used for campaign-related expenses,” in exchange for Sandoval’s promise to block legislation that would have banned red light cameras in Illinois.

And beginning in July 2018, according to the document, he solicited $5,000 per month in “protection money” for using his position in the General Assembly to protect the company’s interests.

During a July 31, 2018, meeting, Sandoval told the company official that he was aware other people were getting payoffs. The official confirmed that other people received a percentage of revenue that the red light cameras brought in.

“It galls me to know, but because we’ve established such a great relationship, um, ’cause you know I’ll go balls to the walls for anything you ask me. ... It’s hard for me to swallow how [people] make so much off of you. Right? And I gotta do the work,” Sandoval is quoted in the document as saying.

The plea agreement also suggests Sandoval is suspected of corrupt activities that go beyond his relationship with the red light camera company, and that other public officials were involved.

It states that he “also engaged in corrupt activities with other public officials and accepted money from other people in return for using his position as an Illinois state senator to attempt to benefit those people and their business interests.

In total, (he) accepted over $250,000 in bribes as part of criminal activity that involved more than five participants.”

On the charge of tax fraud, the plea agreement states that for tax year 2017, Sandoval reported total income of $125,905 when in fact he had income that year of “at least $259,255,”

Addison Trail names 88’s Best honoree for January Stephanie Avila has been named as Addison Trail’s January recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her stellar involvement in extracurricular activities. Avila, a senior, was recognized during the Jan. 27 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

Avila began participating from the start of her freshman year. While many students wait to see what others might do, Avila jumped right in and made choices to be active in her high school – not only for herself, but for others as well. She is a four-year varsity athlete on the girls tennis team and the girls track and field team, where she served as co-Captain and Captain this year, respectively. She also is a member of the National Honor Society and is active in the music program, where she plays trumpet in the jazz band and concert band and is a Board member on the Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society.

“I helped coach Avila in tennis over the past four years, and she is a very hard worker,” said Chris Grice, girls tennis team coach. “She is always giving 100 percent and trying to get better. She was a great leader on our team and will be missed.”

Not only is Avila an excellent athlete and teammate, but she also is an excellent student. Avila is at the top of her class and has taken 11 Honors courses and 10 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses throughout her high school career, earning top grades in all of them. She is an Illinois State Scholar, a four-year member of the Honor Roll, and she was nominated by the AT Athletic Department for the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) All-Academic State Team, which will be announced in March.

She credits her parents for motivating her – Avila knows they want more for her than they had, and she uses this as the drive to keep reaching for the goals she sets for herself.

She also said teachers Mark Corey, Carolyn Erwin and Jim Perusich have had a positive impact on her life, and she thanks them for being sources of strength, for always pushing her to be confident and to set high standards and for helping her process her thoughts and opinions.

“Avila is the ideal example of the scholar-athlete – she is a consummate time manager, who always puts forth her best academic effort in AP Biol-

ogy,” said Carolyn Erwin, science teacher. “Her work ethic, positive attitude and fierce intellect make her a force to be reckoned with for sure, and I know she will succeed in any endeavor she pursues.”

Guidance Counselor Dana Marine agreed.

“I am not quite sure how Avila has the time to balance academics, activities and family, but she does it all, and she does it very well with a smile on her face,” Marine said. “Avila is so involved – not because it looks good for college, but because she genuinely has diverse interests and talents. Most important, she is a great person with a big heart and a positive personality.

Avila will be a first-generation college student, and I know she will impact her college community the same way she has impacted Addison Trail. I am very proud of Avila and can’t wait to hear about all of her future accomplishments.”

Music Department head and band director Mark Corey said Avila’s attentive nature and desire to succeed are what make her stand out.

“Avila is the epitome of balance,” he said. “She manages to excel in academics, while being a leader in athletics and music. This is because Avila is very thoughtful and organized.

She manages her time very well and is always looking ahead so that she can plan. She is never flustered by challenges and always does her best, no matter how difficult the situation might seem.

“Avila is a fine example of a student who will try a skill or technique over and over until she has mastered it. Avila has applied to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Southern California, University of South Carolina and Colorado State University. She plans to major in exercise science, with a goal to become a sports nutritionist or a sports dietician. While Avila doesn’t want to compete athletically at the collegiate level, she does plan to be involved in intramural sports and community service wherever she decides to go.

The library will continue census promotional efforts into the summer months as well.

Ensuring an accurate census count is extremely important for the state because census results are used to determine how many seats each state gets in the House of Representatives. State officials redraw boundaries of legislative districts to account for population shifts. More than $675 billion will be distributed to support state and county schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital pro-

grams in our communities. Census results also help determine funding for libraries and library systems, but Monahan wants to focus on the importance of the census for Addison specifically.

“Achieving a complete count in Addison is a priority because the library believes everybody counts,” Monahan added. “If Addison residents are not counted in the census, there may be fewer services available for the community. Local non-profits will be eligible for fewer grants, schools may not receive the money they deserve, and local government will have an inaccurate view of who lives here.”

Special reunion planned

Former Addison Trail teacher Alice Smith retired in 2009 from teaching Family and Consumer Science. Every year, she reminded her students to plan on attending a party in 2020.

Mrs. Smith is keeping her promise.

The event is planned for Sunday, Feb. 16 from 2-6 p.m. at the Park District Recreational Center, 120 Oak Street. This promise includes all students from 1995 through 2009 who took Consumer Management, Foods and Nutrition, Child Development, Clothing, Parenting, Invitation to Teaching, Cosmetology as well as students who took Behind the Wheel Driver’s Ed and Debate Club (2007-09).

At the party Mrs. Smith is offering a door prize to spend a day on her 42-foot sailboat. Guests and spouses are welcome to attend. Adult beverages and hearty snacks including homemade pie will fill the event with memories of Pie Fest. More than 400 pictures are ready for a rolling Power Point. Guests are encouraged to bring business cards, brochures, and pictures for the Bragging Table.

“It’s hard to believe that 2020 is here,” Mrs. Smith said. “Locating over 1800 students is a challenge!”

living at the Center, brightening their days and bringing lots of smiles along the way.

“Every year we get more and more interest in this wonderful fundraiser, and it’s a great way to warm the hearts of the residents of the DuPage Care Center during the cold winter months,” said Pete DiCianni, Health and Human Services Committee Chairman, DuPage County Board.

Struggles with the weight of the English language

Something about a new year (or decade) gets me focused on the English language. I’m not sure why.

Normal people focus on indoor exercise and weight loss during the winter months.

I think about words and the heaviness they can cause when used in a redundant manner. Heavy phrases are like extra weight on this hips – unwanted, unwarranted and unneeded. I don’t want to come across as preachy. I realize the English language is an ominous and arduous beast. Still, when desiring to master something one must focus on the details. Shall we get started?

Let’s take the phrase “first ever.” If something is the first, it goes without saying that it is the first ever. “Ever” is a waste of four letters. It’s our first trip to the ocean, not our first ever.

First, in itself, is enough by itself.

Drop the ever. Forever.

The same goes for “first annual.”

You can’t have an annual party or picnic or celebration if you’ve only had it once. The first event is an inaugural one, not annual (yet), even if you plan to have it for years to come.

The only first annual you can technically host or have is the second annual. I’m a stickler, I know. But where is the beauty of language if not in the intricacies of the details?

Another redundancy: “once again.”

Again, you can stick with “again.”

again). Save yourself five letters and one whole word and you still have the same message. Extra words are just that: extra. Cut them out like you long to cut belly fat.

Related to the above is “over again.” We had to run the race over again. No. We had to run the race over. Or, we had to run the race again. One or the other, but not both.

Mantra: cut out the fat.

“Each and every.” Really? He looked at each and every Valentine card before picking the right one.

“Each” or “every” take your pick but only choose one. Did he look at each Valentine card or every Valentine card? The term “each and every” is redundant and no one wants to be redundant. It can be really, really, really annoying.

Equally aggravating, is the use of the word “choice.” When a person has to decide between two things, it’s often described as having two choices. Not true. There are two options, but only one choice. If I can pick a red or blue car, I have two options from which to pick, but only one choice to make.

Which brings us to the “could

of” conundrum. I could of done this or I could of done that. Wrong and wrong. You could have. Could have.

“Could” and “of” are not friends and should not be forced to stand next to one another – in the gym, on the page or anywhere else.

The same can be said for “being that.” “Being that” is not a phrase – or at least not two words that can be correctly strung together. Being that I’m sick I’m staying home from work. It doesn’t work. When tempted to use being and that together, substitute the word, “because.” It’s as simple as (being) that.

I’ll finish up with the distinction between “that” and “who.” This one gets a little gray for me. When I write about my pets and their personalities, I’m tempted to use “who,” because they are like little people to me, but technically animals are referred to as “that.” “Who” is reserved and preferred for references to people, although “that” is okay in a pinch.

The dog that ate my shoes. The man who borrowed my shoes.

While we’re chatting about “that,” the darn word can be deleted in many instances. But not always.

Complicated, I know. When in doubt, read your sentence aloud both ways – with “that” and without.

If no meaning is lost, delete. Two examples: 1. It’s possible that I’ll be late. 2. I whispered that I’d be late. Which needs “that?” There’s no cut and dried answer, but sentence number two (in my humble opinion)

benefits from “that.” Sentence number one can do without.

And with that, I’ll step down from my soapbox and focus on more important things, like the upcoming bathing suit season and the fact that my bathroom scale will once again be used for the first ever time since last fall, being that I haven’t paid enough attention to the two choices I

have of being healthy or eating junk food, which is a struggle for me each and every day.

Fullerton celebrates 100th day of school First graders at Fullerton School continued a long tradition on Friday, Jan. 31 when they celebrated the 100th day of school.

The first grade students each cre-

ated a poster that had 100 items on it and they paraded through the school with the posters. The parade ended in the gym where family members had a chance to admire the creativity

ACA hosts District #4 student art show Students from the elementary and junior high schools of Addison School District #4 celebrated a display their artwork at the Addison Center for the Arts with a reception on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The students, art teachers and family, friends, and the community enjoyed their artistic accomplishments while chatting and enjoying refreshments. An annual event at the Addison Center for the Arts, approximately 100 students had artwork on display for this year’s show.

“The Addison Center for the Arts Art Show is an ideal opportunity for our students to be proud of their work displayed in a professional setting that is open to the community,” Superintendent John Langton at a December school board meeting. “These experiences remind me of the importance of our relationship with the ACA and the impact they have on our students.”

Blazers catch fire to knock off Warriors Carlson’s 43-point outburst leads Addison Trail to its first conference win

Nearly two months ago, the Willowbrook boys basketball team cruised to a 23-point win over Addison Trail. The Blazers came to play in Friday’s West Suburban Gold Conference rematch. They stunned the Warriors 77-70 to pick up their first conference win of the season.

Friday’s loss sent Willowbrook to 9-15 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Addison Trail senior A.J. Carlson erupted for 43 points in Friday’s win over the Warriors. Carlson scored 17 points in the third quarter. He made four 3-point shots during the period.

He hit three of those 3-point bombs during the first one minute and 20 seconds of the second half. His third 3-pointer of the quarter gave the Blazers a 38-29 lead with 6:40 remaining in the period. Carlson also scored an inside basket during his burst at the start of the second half.

Carlson’s fourth 3-point shot of the third quarter gave the Blazers a 41-29 lead with about 5:55 to play in the period.

Addison Trail led the Warriors 2726 at halftime. Carlson’s third-quarter fireworks helped the Blazers to a 52-45 lead by the end of the period.

“Carlson got hot; he definitely had a career night,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins after the game.

“He’s their best player. He really took over in the second half.”

We weren’t able to sustain any momentum. They would foul us and we would go to the line. If we don’t get the free-throw line figured out, it’s going to be a short playoff run.”

Stubblefield fouled out with 1:52 to play in the game. The Blazers held a 68-60 advantage when Stubblefield exited the game. The Warriors kept fighting in the closing minutes; senior Deandre Holliday sank a 3-point shot to cut Addison Trail’s lead to 71-65 with about 1:26 to play. Senior Brenton Jones provided a driving basket to cut the lead to 71-67 with about 1:05 remaining. Addison Trail junior Robert Roszkiewicz helped to seal his team’s victory with a 3-point play that raised the Blazers’ lead to 74-67 with about 45 seconds to play.

Roszkiewicz finished the game with 14 points.

Carlson added to his 17-point output in the third quarter with 12 more points in the fourth quarter. He made three baskets and six free throws during the final period.

Addison Trail’s student fans flooded the court at the end of Friday’s contest to celebrate the Blazers’ victory in the opening game of a boys/girls doubleheader between District 88 rivals. Willowbrook’s girls team defeated the Blazers 51-22 in the evening’s second game.

The Blazers, who earned their first West Suburban Gold Conference victory of the season on Friday, held a 27-26 halftime lead. Carlson scored 17 points in the third quarter. Naumovsky wins the uneven bars title; Wieringa and Wilson lauded for their efforts this season

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team finished second in Saturday’s West Suburban Gold Conference Meet in Villa Park.

Willowbrook sophomore Bella Naumovsky captured the conference meet’s title on the uneven bars with her score of 9.25. Senior Karli Wilson of the Warriors placed 13th in the event with a 7.425.

“I was pretty nervous,” said Naumovsky in describing her uneven bars routine at Saturday’s meet. “I was working really hard at practice to get through my routine. It was a pretty great experience. I was hoping to get in the top three. Once I got first, I was really happy.”

Naumovsky said she had been executing her uneven bars routine very well in practices, but she was unable to transfer those performances to competition.

“I’ve been hitting them spot-on in practice,” she said. “Then I got to meets, and I messed up a couple of times. That really got me upset and made me move forward and finish up my routine.”

Naumovsky added that the uneven bars competition is now her favorite event.

“It was the balance beam, but since I’ve been doing really well on bars, that’s my favorite now,” she said.

Sophomore Tess Placek finished fourth on the vault with a score of 9.1, while junior Maeve Costello (8.8) placed seventh.

Naumovsky took fourth on beam at 8.65, and Placek tied for seventh at 8.475.

Naumovsky was fifth on floor exercises (8.75). Freshman Sarah Ball tied for ninth (8.425).

Placek finished seventh in the allaround scoring at 33.050. Junior Riley Wieringa claimed 11th (30.425) in the all-around standings.

Willowbrook coach Deanna Zuchowski noted after Saturday’s conference meet that the Warriors have reached the 130-point mark in each of their last three meets. Willowbrook’s 130.25-point output in its Jan. 23 win over Morton marked the program’s first score above the 130-point mark in 12 years.

“The girls are working super-hard,” said Zuchowski after the conference meet.

Naumovsky did not begin competing with the Willowbrook team until January. Naumovsky, who previously participated in club gymnastics, was injured during her freshman year. She was sidelined after undergoing hip surgery. She suffered the injury while competing in club gymnastics.

“I decided to go into high school gymnastics,” said Naumovsky after Saturday’s conference meet. “It’s easier on my body and it’s a lot more fun than club gymnastics. It’s so fun, and it has a great atmosphere.”

Zuchowski said Naumovsky has been a welcome addition to the Willowbrook team.

“I couldn’t be more impressed,” said Zuchowski. “She’s really meshed well with the team, and she pushes the team to do better.”

Willowbrook’s notable performers from Saturday’s junior varsity conference meet included freshman Hanna Mitrick, who won the first-

place medal in the vault competition with her score of 8.525. Mitrick placed fourth on the balance beam (7.6), sixth on the uneven bars (7.1), sixth in floor exercises (7.45) and third in the all-around standings (30.675).

Freshman Molly Morris of Willowbrook finished fourth in the junior varsity meet’s all-around standings with her score of 29.1. Morris placed third in floor exercises with her score of 7.775. Freshman Dima Elagha of the Warriors finished sixth in the meet’s all-around competition with her total of 24.25.

On Jan. 29, the Warriors squared off against Leyden in a WSC Gold dual meet in Villa Park. The Warriors earned a 133.3-122.45 win.

Placek posted the first-place score on the balance beam with a 9.0, while Naumovsky was second at 8.6.

Placek also finished first on the vault (8.9). Ball placed third at 8.6.

Naumovsky won the bars competition with her score of 8.95, while Ball placed third at 7.6. Naumovsky won the floor exercises competition with a score of 8.8, while Placek and junior Alexis Fitzgerald were right behind her with identical scores of 8.75. Ball’s floor exercises routine received a score of 8.55.

Placek won the all-around competition in the meet against Leyden with her total of 34.150.

Mitrick won all four individual events and the all-around title in the junior varsity meet to lead Willowbrook to a 108-3-102.7 win. Mitrick won the vault with an 8.5, took first on bars at 7.3, won the beam at 8.7 and scored a 7.4 on floor to win that event. She finished at 31.9 and in first place for the all-around. Morris provided an all-around score of 28.8.

Zuchowski took time to laud the efforts of Wieringa and Wilson, in particular, for their efforts throughout the season.

Zuchowski deemed Wieringa as “the hardest worker I have witnessed in the last few years.”

“Riley’s hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed,” she added.

“The girls are now looking to her as a leader. She is ready before practice, is usually the last one in the gym and pushed everyone to do their best. Riley is a quiet energy in the gym and her presence is known.”

Zuchowski explained Wilson has overcome several obstacles this season.

“Karli has had a tough season,” the coach noted. “She had a bout with the flu and injuries throughout the season. Even with these challenges, she continues to be a leader and captain of this team. Karli makes sure everyone is ready at the beginning of practice and doesn’t let anyone leave before coming together as a team at the end of practice. She has been on the team the last four years and has shaped the team to what it is today.”

The Warriors competed in the Lake Park Regional earlier this week. Willowbrook gymnasts hope to advance to the Glenbard South Sectional on Feb. 10.

Warriors pound Addison Trail 51-22

Dasbach delivers 18 points, 19 rebounds in a dominant performance

The Willowbrook girls basketball team improved to 14-12 overall and 8-3 in the West Suburban Gold Conference with Friday night’s 51-22 victory at Addison Trail.

Junior Stephanie Dasbach led the Warriors to the victory with a superb all-around effort. Dasbach scored 18 points and pulled down 19 rebounds.

She also blocked five Addison Trail shots.

“Stephanie played like a beast today,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell after Friday’s win, which followed the boys game between the Warriors and Blazers in Addison.

“She’s been big for us in our last few games. She’s still getting better.”

Willowbrook led the Blazers 12-8 after one quarter and 24-12 at halftime. The lead grew to 38-18 by the end of the third quarter.

Dasbach scored nine points in each half. She made five field goals during the game and sank eight of nine shots from the free-throw line.

Senior K’Aliyha Herron provided 12 points, six rebounds and four steals. Junior Olivia Sobieszczyk made four baskets, including one

shot from 3-point range, to contribute nine points. Senior Khaylah Richey scored five points, while junior Annemarie Knudtson supplied four points, four rebounds and eight assists.

“The girls played well today,” added Harrell. “I like the way we’re playing. Everybody’s contributing.”

Three days before playing Addison Trail, the Warriors dropped a 49-42 decision to Maine South in a non-conference game in Villa Park. Dasbach scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Knudtson scored 12 points, while Herron tallied 10 points.

The Warriors trailed Maine South 30-23 at halftime. Willowbrook cut the Hawks’ lead to 36-34 by the end of the third quarter.

Willowbrook made just seven of its 24 free-throw attempts against Maine South.

“When you have a bad night at the free-throw line, you pay for it,” said Harrell.

The Warriors will complete the conference season with this Friday’s home game against Morton.

With high school basketball teams in the thick of their schedules at this time of the season, there usually isn’t a lot of time to stop, pause and breathe.

The Addison Trail boys basketball team bucked that trend recently with a nine-day stretch from Jan. 15-Jan. 23, when it had no games.

The off period came at an opportune time, coach Brendan Lyons noted.

“It was a nice little break,” Lyons said. “We had some things moved around and because of that had that time off from games. It was a time to get away a little bit and do some fun things with the team. We also were able to get healthy and we able to change a few things.”

Lyons said his squad, which has struggled when it comes to the win column this year, remains as dogged as ever in its quest to continue to improve. “The guys have stayed positive,” he said. “Our first two practices out of that break were good.”

The Blazers continue to be led by the likes of senior A.J. Carlson and junior Robert Roszkiewicz. Lyons also applauded the play of junior Easton Dietz.

“He’s really starting to play well,” said Lyons. “He had a couple good JV games and earned some playing time. He’s not putting up big numbers, but has showed good growth

Coming out of their nine-day break, the Blazers lost to West Suburban Conference Gold Division leader Hinsdale South, 61-28 on Jan. 24, and also dropped a non-conference contest to Wheaton Academy, 59-26, on Jan. 28.

“We got crushed,” said Lyons.

“They [Hinsdale South] are undefeated in the league and had a 20-2 record. They came out and shot it very well. They blitzed us in the first half. We were down 25 at the half.

We never were in it. They took us out of what we wanted to do. We felt confident in the plan that we had going into the game but it never materialized.”

Addison Trail will make up for its lack of recent games with a busy finish to the end of the regular season.

The Addison Trail girls gymnastics team competed in Saturday’s West Suburban Gold Conference Meet at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.

The Blazers finished third in the meet’s team standings with their total of 127.175 points.

On the uneven bars, Maddie Muccianti placed third with her score of 8.35, while Francesca Scarbaggio had an 8.2, which tied her for sixth.

On the balance beam, Muccianti tied for seventh (8.475), while Delaney Gregory finished 11th with a 7.90.

Scarbaggio posted an eighth-place finish in floor exercises (8.55), while Gregory scored 8.35 and finished 12th.

Muccianti placed 13th with an 8.25.

On the vault, Scarbaggio finished 10th with an 8.5, while Gregory had an 8.25 (tied for 14th). Muccianti finished with an 8.1 and Alexis Theodore had an 8.05.

Muccianti was Addison Trail’s top finisher in the all-around standings, finishing sixth with her total of 33.175.

Scarbaggio (32.8) placed eighth in the all-around competition, while Gregory (31.65) took ninth.

At the JV level, Mahi Patel placed 10th on the vault (7.7). Patel led the Blazers on the balance beam with her seventh-place score of 6.55, while Natalie Rojo tied for eighth with a 6.4.

Patel was Addison Trail’s top performer in floor exercises; her score of

6.675 earned 19th place. Rojo placed 12th with her score of 6.35.

Patel led the Blazers in the all-around standings with her seventh-place finish at 23.975. Emily Villarreal (22.85) finished eighth in the all-around competition.

Addison Trail is competing in this week’s IHSA Lake Park Regional in Roselle.

Myers at Roosevelt Former Willowbrook boys basketball player Matt Myers is a 6-4 sophomore forward on the Roosevelt University (Chicago) men’s basketball team.

To start the week, Myers was third on the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game. He was shooting .456 from the field (93 of 204) and had 17 three-pointers to his credit, while shooting at a .644 clip from the foul line.

Myers, whose hometown is Addison, also was fourth on the team in rebounding at 3.8 per game and was among the team leaders in assists (46), blocked shots (13) and was second in steals with 19.

In a recent loss to Holy Cross, Myers had 13 points and three rebounds.

In a win against Governors State, Myers hit for 19 points and made a pair of 3s to go with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

In a win against Cardinal Stritch, Myers had 12 points, made two 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds.

Willowbrook cheerleading program to hold winter youth camp Feb. 10-13

The Willowbrook High School cheerleading program will hold its winter youth camp for children in kindergarten through eighth grade from Monday, Feb. 10, through Thursday, Feb. 13.

The camp will meet daily from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the high school.

Campers will learn cheers, dances, motions and jumps from Willowbrook’s varsity cheerleaders.

The registration fee is $40 per

Indigo Ensemble to perform at Bethel Bethel United Church of Christ will present a riveting performance by the acclaimed Indigo Ensemble on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m., as part of the church’s Music at Bethel concert series.

Violist Uli Widmaier was born in Germany, studied violin at the conservatory in Munich and took master classes with Henryk Szeryng, Nathan Mironovich Milstein and Ruggiero Ricci. Widmaier was previously concertmaster of the Brown University

Orchestra, and is currently principal violist in several Chicagoland orchestras.

Cellist Anna Walker earned degrees in Cello Performance from the Hartt School of Music and DePaul University. In particular, Walker enjoys sharing the many ways that music can inspire others. She has served as a music volunteer at two mental health facilities, Hartgrove Behavioral Health and Riveredge Hospital.

World-class, award-winning pianist Jeffrey Panko is a regular performer in the concert series, both as soloist and collaborator. He has been featured in performances at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center Library, WQXR Radio (New York), is a frequent performer on WFMT Radio (Chicago), and has appeared in Symphony Center playing the music of Steven Sondheim for Mr. Sondheim.

Chicago carjacker receives 20-year sentence Second of two men pleads guilty to armed robbery, vehicular hijacking

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Wednesday, Jan. 29, that a Chicago man accused of following a Wheaton couple on their way home and stealing their car at gunpoint has been sentenced to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).

Phillip Smith, 28, appeared in court in front of Judge John Kinsella, where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Vehic-

ular Hijacking (Class X Felony).

Following his plea, Judge Kinsella handed down Smith’s 20-year sentence. On May 7, 2019, Smith’s accomplice, Carlos Moore, 28, also of Chicago, was sentenced to 21 years in the IDOC following his plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Robbery with a Firearm (Class X Felony).

On February 22, 2017, at approximately 10:10 p.m., Moore, Smith and one unnamed accomplice followed

a Wheaton couple as they drove to their home. When the couple pulled into their garage, Moore, Smith and the accomplice pulled their vehicle into the driveway behind them.

Moore and Smith, wearing masks, then got out of their vehicle, pointed a gun at the wife and demanded the keys to their vehicle. The wife gave her entire purse to Moore and then he, Smith and the accomplice stole the couple’s vehicle. A short time later, officers spotted the stolen ve-

hicle but eventually lost the vehicle following a high-speed chase. The vehicle was later located in a Chicago parking lot. An investigation into the incident, conducted by the Wheaton Police Department, led authorities to Moore and Smith. The third individual allegedly involved in the robbery has yet to be identified.

“This afternoon, Mr. Smith learned that he will be joining his partner behind bars for his role in

the hijacking of an innocent couple’s car,” Berlin said. “While we are very grateful that no one was injured that evening, I’m sure the entire incident was very traumatic for the victims.

The sentences handed down to Mr. Smith and Mr. Moore will send the message to any would-be carjackers that this type of violent crime will not be tolerated in DuPage County.”

Both men will be required to serve 50% of their sentence before being eligible for parole.

Second Illinois coronavirus case confirmed in spouse of first woman diagnosed

The spouse of the first Illinoisan confirmed to have novel coronavirus has also tested positive for the illness and is being monitored, health officials said Jan. 30.

The case is the first confirmed person-to-person transmission of the virus in the U.S. and the sixth confirmed case in the country.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike hosted a news conference with county and city health officials in Chicago and said “the risk to the general pub-

lic remains low.”

“The second case is a Chicago man and is the husband of the first confirmed case in Illinois,” she said.

The woman, in her 60s, returned from Wuhan, China—the city at the center of the outbreak—in mid-January. Her husband did not travel to China.

All those who had close contact with the woman were being monitored, and her husband began displaying symptoms in recent days.

When he did, he was admitted to the hospital and placed in isolation.

Dr. Ezike said there are 21 indi-

viduals in Illinois who are considered “persons under investigation” for the virus, which is considered “novel” because not much is known about the new strain.

She said health officials are taking other actions to guard against the spread of the virus and they continue to work with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The virus is not spreading widely across the community at this time,” Ezike said.

Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said the news was a “con-

tinuation” of last week’s news conference in which the first case in the state was reported.

She also said there is “not a significant risk of spread before people develop symptoms.”

Arwady said the first patient “is doing well,” and the transmission from wife to husband, who had close contact with each other, “is not totally unexpected.”

“She remains hospitalized and in isolation, primarily for infection control,” Arwady said, adding the woman’s husband is hospitalized and in stable condition as well.

Illinois ethics laws among the weakest in the nation

Government reform advocates told a panel of state lawmakers Jan. 30 that Illinois has some of the weakest governmental ethics rules in the country and that lawmakers should put more teeth into them if they hope to regain the trust of the public.

“For me, the disheartening part of all of it is not that so many lawmakers at all levels of government have strayed so far from the rules and have overshadowed the good work of ethical lawmakers, but that so many across our state kind of react to this news with a shrug,” said Georgia Logothetis, assistant director of the watchdog group Common Cause Illinois. “It’s a kind of disheartened acceptance that, well, this is just the way things work in Illinois.”

Logothetis was part of a panel of reform advocates who testified before the Joint Commission on Ethics and Lobbying Reform. The commission was formed last year in the wake of federal investigations that led to indictments against three sitting state lawmakers, two of whom have since resigned.

The Jan. 30 hearing, the third since the panel was formed, focused on the state’s Governmental Ethics Act, and specifically its provisions dealing with conflicts of interest and financial disclosure requirements.

While some states specifically prohibit lawmakers and other public officials from acting on issues in which they have a direct financial interest, Illinois has no such provision.

In fact, the only thing the Illinois law says about conflicts of interest is that when they arise, lawmakers “should consider the possibility of eliminating the interest causing the

conflict.”

“If that is not feasible,” the statute continues, “he should consider the possibility of abstaining from such official action.”

Marie Dillon, policy director for the Better Government Association, a Chicago-based advocacy group, said that law was the result of a 1965 study commission that initially recommended mandatory rules, along with penalties and public reporting for violators. Those suggestions were rejected by lawmakers at the time.

“So, we ended up with a law that leaves it up to individual legislators to decide if they have a conflict of interest and, if so, what to do about it,” Dillon said. “As a taxpayer, I have to say emphatically, that’s not good enough.”

Nicholas Birdsong, a policy specialist for the National Conference of State Legislatures, said conflict of interest laws vary widely among the states. He said 35 states require lawmakers to recuse themselves from votes in which they have a conflict of interest and 13 states, including Illinois, leave the decision up to the lawmaker.

In Tennessee, where the rules are different in each chamber, the state House has a mandatory recusal policy and the state Senate has a discretionary policy. Utah, Birdsong said, requires legislators to vote if they are present, regardless of whether they have a conflict.

Birdsong said some states have adopted the idea that lawmakers should be able to vote, even if they have a conflict of interest, because “legislators are elected and they’re obligated to vote according to the will of their constituents regardless

of whether or not it serves or hurts their interest, and so having these sort of mandatory recusal rules essentially limits their ability to do their jobs.”

Many of those testifying Jan. 30 also called for updating and expanding the Statement of Economic Interests forms that public officials in Illinois are required to fill out.

“The interesting thing about this document to me is, I’m not sure it adequately assesses what the interests are,” said Brad Cole, executive director of the Illinois Municipal League.

As an example, Cole pointed to one question on the form that asks what other units of government the person filing the form has worked for in the preceding year.

“It doesn’t say what you do for that unit of government, and that makes me wonder what is the interest,” he said. “If you are employed, what are you doing? What is the interest that you might have with the unit of government.”

Other questions on the form ask filers to identify the names of businesses in which they have an ownership interest; the names of professional organizations in which they are an officer or director; the nature of any professional services they rendered for which they were paid more than $5,000; the identity of significant capital assets they own; and the name of any lobbyist with whom they have a “close economic association.”

Others pointed out that people filling out the form do not have to disclose outstanding debts or credits, any real estate holdings they may have other than their home, or how much income they derive from

sources that might present a conflict of interest.

Former Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, who served from 2011 to 2015 under then-Gov. Pat Quinn, said reporters often refer to the current document as a “none sheet” because people can write the word “none” on virtually all of the questions, even though they might still have significant outside interests.

She argued that the form should be designed in a way that is useful to the public rather than in a way that protects the privacy of public officials.

“I’d ask you to step back and look at how it’s going to affect people back home,” she said. “How is it going to affect not just members of the state House and Senate, but how is it going to affect people who are on the city council and the county board and the library district and everyone who is a constituent of those elected people who would like to know, does the person who’s proposing the new library board have an interest in the property where they’re going to build the new library?”

The joint commission so far has not made any recommendations for new ethics laws. Its final report to the General Assembly is due March 31.

But Gov. JB Pritzker made a forceful plea in his State of the State Address on Wednesday that he expects lawmakers to pass “real, lasting ethics reform this legislative session.”

“I think that message coming from the leader of our state is one of the strongest messages that can take place,” Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, a member of the commission, said after the meeting.

She said the CDC believes it can take between two and 14 days for someone who has had contact with coronavirus to show symptoms of it if they contract it.

The World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern after calling an emergency committee meeting Jan. 30.

A WHO situation report dated Jan. 30 said there are 7,818 confirmed global cases of the virus, with all but 82 cases in China. The virus has caused 170 deaths.

This week, the CDC advised Americans to avoid all nonessential travel to China.

The WHO urges the general public to take the same steps to protect against the virus that are taken against the flu.

This includes frequently washing hands with sanitizer or soap and water; covering one’s mouth when coughing or sneezing; avoiding close contact with anyone who has a fever and cough; and seeking medical care early when symptoms show. Those with symptoms should relay travel histories to their medical professionals.

When visiting live markets in areas experiencing cases of novel coronavirus, the public should avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals and surfaces in contact with animals.
