DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that ten-year-old male Park View Elementary School student has been charged with bringing a large kitchen knife to school.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, Lombard Police received information regarding a student who allegedly brought a knife to school. Through the course of their investigation, authorities learned that the minor was allegedly in possession of a knife and that he allegedly stated in the presence of another student that, “everyone in the school is going to die.”

“The fact that a ten-year-old boy allegedly made this type of a threat is extremely disturbing,” Berlin said.

“The safety and well-being of our students as well as staff and other school personnel remains a top priority of my administration and any threat directed at our schools will be fully investigated. I would like to thank the Lombard Police Department for their work in this case.”

The minor has been charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct – Threat of Violence at a School, a Class 4 Felony and two Misdemeanor weapons charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 25, 2019 in front of Judge Robert Anderson.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the minor’s guilt.

Expert brings program on environmentally-responsible living

Benjamin Van Horne, founder of Greenline Homes, LLC, will speak at the Elmhurst Public Library on Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Testing for air-tight doors One way which Van Horne recommends making a home more energy efficient is to test the air tightness of the home through a blower door test.

“Many homes have problems ranging from drafts, blistering paint, ice dams and freezing pipes, to houses that won’t adequately heat or cool,” he said. “While in the past, air sealing efforts concentrated on easy to find air leaks around windows and doors, the most important leaks in the house are the hard to find leaks in the attic, basement, crawlspace, attached garage and framing connections.”

He explained that during a blower door test, a powerful, calibrated fan is temporarily sealed into the frame of an exterior doorway. The fan pulls air out of the house lowering the air pressure inside home.

This pressure difference forces outside air through all holes and penetrations in the home. Leaks can be detected using chemical smoke, infrared cameras or simply feeling with your hand. Once located, they can be remediated.

Existing ductwork can be used or a ductless system that provides a unit in each large room which moves heat from outdoors to indoors in winter and the opposite in summer. He recommends this to prepare for the imminent carbon tax and rising fossil fuel costs, as well as the environmental impact.

Winners named in firstever American Dream Fellowship competition Four first-generation college students took another step toward fulfilling their education dreams, winning scholarships during the second annual Elmhurst College American Dream Fellowship Competition.

On Monday, Feb. 18, Round Lake High School Senior Hannah Yearout was named the first-place winner of the competition. Yearout, who plans to major in early childhood education and become a teacher, will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to attend Elmhurst College.

The American Dream awards ranged from four years’ room and board to stipends that will cover the cost of books and other materials.

The winners were announced during an awards ceremony in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel attended by many of the 155 students who entered the contest, along with several hundred mothers, fathers, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends.

To enter, students were asked to submit a video on the topic “As a first-generation student, what would graduating from college mean to you and your family?”

In her video, Yearout talked about how her father’s death, when she was only 11, and her grandfather’s support inspired her to excel in high school and discover her passion for teaching young children. Graduating from college as a first-generation student “would showcase ev-

erything my grandpa ever wished for me, and the person my father would’ve hoped to see me become,” she said. “It would show what kind of person I really want to strive to be.”

The names and videos of the other winners are: • Christopher Perez, of Northlake (West Leyden High School), who plans to major in music education, will receive a stipend to cover four years of room and board.

• Jessica Jones of Hillside (Proviso Math & Science Academy), who plans to major in sociology, will receive a Beck’s Books stipend to cover the annual cost of books and other materials.

• Auri Martinez, of Chicago (Phoenix Military Academy), who plans to major in psychology and pursue occupational therapy, also will receive a Beck’s Books stipend.

All of the students who entered the competition will receive a $1,000 annual American Dream Grant to attend Elmhurst College.

About the American Dream Fellowship Competition Committed to helping its students achieve the American Dream, Elmhurst College launched the American Dream Fellowship Competition last year. The contest was open to all first-generation college students who have been admitted to Elmhurst College for the fall of 2019.

Aurora shooting prompts efforts to tighten enforcement of Illinois gun laws CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

Gov. J.B. Pritzker and some state lawmakers said last week that the recent mass shooting at an Aurora manufacturing plant will lead to efforts to tighten enforcement of the state’s gun laws.

Five people were killed and several others were injured when 45-yearold Gary Martin went on a shooting rampage at the Henry Pratt Co. plant in Aurora after being told he was being fired.

Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman told reporters during a news conference that Martin was not legally eligible to own a gun. Although he had been issued a firearms owners’ identification card, known as a FOID, that permit was canceled after he applied for a concealed carry permit and a fingerprint search revealed he had a previous felony conviction in another state.

Still, neither state nor local authorities took any steps to confiscate Martin’s weapon.

Pritzker said that his administration will push for legislation to tighten enforcement of the state’s gun laws.

“We need to make sure that we’re addressing that,” Pritzker said at a news conference following a bill-signing ceremony. “We’re going to make sure to make proposals that will tighten the rules around revocation of FOID cards.”

State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) said in an interview that there are many circumstances under which a person can have their FOID card revoked, such as felony convictions and mental illness diagnoses, but that little effort is made to follow through and make sure those people turn in their cards, and their guns.

“If you lost your FOID card for whatever reason, you’d get a letter saying, ‘Hey, you know that you can’t have a FOID. Please mail it in.’

And if you don’t, no one really follows up,” she said.

Morrison is the lead sponsor of a bill introduced earlier in the session,

Four men accused of breaking into Lombard apartment DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton have announced that bond has been set for Mashawn Barnes, 27, of Chicago; Kevin Jones, 31, of Chicago; Calvert Williams, 29, of Matteson; and Dion Young, 20, of Chicago, who appeared in bond court where Judge Kavita Athanikar set bond at $2 million with 10 percent to apply for all four men.

All four men have been charged with one count of armed robbery (Class X felony). In addition, Williams, Jones and Barnes have been charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Young also has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and Barnes also has been charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding.

Because the crime was allegedly committed with a gun, sentencing requires a 15-year add on, making the defendants eligible for a penalty of between 21 and 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections if found guilty.

At approximately 3:35 p.m. last Friday, Lombard police officers were dispatched to an apartment on Foxworth Boulevard in response to an armed robbery that had just occurred.

It is alleged that as the victim and her daughter entered their apartment building, two men, armed and wearing masks, entered the building before the door closed.

It is alleged that the men pointed a gun at the back of both the woman’s and her daughter’s heads and ordered the victim to take them to her apartment. It is further alleged that once inside the apartment, the men tied up the woman and another occupant who was found sleeping in the apartment.

The men then allegedly stole money, a handgun and other items from the apartment before fleeing in a vehicle waiting in the parking lot.

The female victim was able to free herself, call police and identify the vehicle in which the men allegedly

fled. It is alleged that as the men fled, Lombard officers responding to the call observed the vehicle in which the men allegedly fled and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

The defendant’s vehicle allegedly did not stop and accelerated away rapidly reaching speeds of up to 75 mph on a 35 mph portion of Roosevelt Road. Following a chase that involved the Lombard, Elmhurst and Villa Park Police Department, the vehicle came to a stop near Villa Avenue and North Avenue where it was involved in two separate crashes. It is alleged that four men then fled the vehicle. Mashawn Barnes was apprehended just north of the abandoned vehicle while the other three men were apprehended without incident in a wooded area nearby.

“The terror allegedly caused by these men—forcing their way at gunpoint into an innocent woman’s apartment, tying up their victims and stealing money, other items of value and a gun before fleeing is almost unimaginable,” Berlin said. “Following this, the men then allegedly led police on a high-speed chase during rush hour showing a complete and utter lack of respect for law enforcement and for the lives of countless motorists. Thankfully, no one was injured either at the apartment or on the streets.

“I would like to thank the Lombard, Elmhurst and Villa Park Police Departments for their work in quickly apprehending the suspects in this case.”

“The brazen actions and use of high-powered weapons allegedly used in the commission of this crime and subsequent high-speed chase put many innocent lives in danger,” Newton said. “Thankfully, our officers were able to bring the suspects into custody before anyone was hurt.”

The cases against all four men have been assigned to Judge Miller.

Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 18 for arraignment.

Senate Bill 1145, that would authorize the Department of Public Health to levy fines and other sanctions on public mental health facilities if they fail to report the names of patients who are diagnosed with disorders that disqualify them from owning guns, a problem that she said has been occurring in the court system when criminal defendants are sent for mental evaluation.

But she said that bill could easily be expanded to include additional kinds of enforcement mechanisms.

Meanwhile, Aurora-area lawmakers reacted with speeches on the floors of the House and Senate.

Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D-Aurora) gave an emotional speech on the House floor, where she praised the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene and read the names of all the victims.

“All these individuals left behind families and friends who loved them

and cherished them as a part of their lives,” she said. “They are forever in our hearts and our thoughts at such a senseless loss of life.

Meanwhile, state Sen. Linda Holmes (D-Aurora) called for a moment of silence on the Senate floor in honor of the victims, saying, “We will never be able to mend the loss or undo the trauma to those who witnessed these events Friday afternoon at Henry Pratt, and to those whose lives are forever changed because of this heartbreaking attack.”

In a separate interview, Holmes described herself as a “staunch” supporter of individual gun rights.

But she said the fact that the shooter managed to keep his weapon even after having his permit revoked showed her that the state needs stricter enforcement.

Glowiak joins fight for fair maps in Illinois State Senator Suzy Glowiak (D-Western Springs) is supporting the fight for fair maps in Illinois.

Glowiak signed on as a sponsor of Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 4, which removes the General Assembly and governor from the redistricting process and requires legislative maps to be drawn by an independent, 16-member Commission.

“This measure promotes a just and transparent process to ensure the people of Illinois have a voice in the manner legislative maps are established,” she said. “Removing politicians from the process will put a stop to gerrymandering in our great state.”

The 16-member commission would be appointed by the Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court and the most senior justice not affiliated with the same political party as the Chief Justice.

The bipartisan amendment will give voters a chance to give greater input on the legislative redistricting process and promote transparency through public hearings.

“The process outlined in this constitutional amendment will allow for the legislative map to be drawn by an independent group working in the best interests of our state, not politicians who are looking out for themselves,” Glowiak said. “By proactively asking for input and empowering constituents to share concerns, we are promoting a fair and open process.”

Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 4 would be effective upon being declared adopted and applicable to redistricting beginning in 2021 and to the election of General Assembly members beginning in 2022.

State Rep feels new minimum wage justified I believe that everyone who puts in a good day’s work deserves a full day’s pay. So it was one of the hardest decisions of my life when I voted against raising Illinois’ minimum wage from $8.25 to $15 an hour over the next six years.

As a small business owner myself, I don’t think this gradual increase will prove catastrophic for our business community -- especially since Illinois’ minimum wage hasn’t gone up since 2010.

My concern, and the reason I voted no, is that I’m keenly aware of the many minimum wage workers employed by our schools, parks, libraries and village halls.

I absolutely believe these workers deserve a fair wage – but I’m worried that our communities will struggle to bear the costs of these higher wages.

At the end of the day, I’m responsible to all of the taxpayers in the 48th District.

I’m right; therefore you must be wrong.

Not quite.

These two scenarios are indicative of something pretty darn significant and it’s not that we all have our own perspectives on the world. We’re probably already aware of that. What these instances show is that maybe, just maybe, no one is right. Or maybe better said, we all could be right.

Or, maybe, sometimes, there is more than one right answer. Mind blown? Mine too.

The environment today is not always the most empathetic regarding differences of opinion.

Contrarily, I might even label it judgmental and sometimes blatantly hostile. People with differing opinions on varying matters often use harsh words against one another – usually via social media because it’s easier that way. Bashing someone in person can be downright uncomfortable, not to mention dangerous.

Harsh words – written, spoken or otherwise – do not often bring

someone around to your line of thinking. We all know this. Still, I find harsh words abound and I wonder what can be done about it – if anything can be done about it.

When we disagree is it possible to say that maybe there is no one right answer? Fifty shades of the truth, one might say. Maybe I see boogers and my husband sees dandruff and we are both correct and there is no need for either of us to get all gruffy about it because we are only pointing out the obvious from our own point of view.

But I’m belittling matters. The world is a complicated place.

Our issues are intertwined, interconnected and complex. We all come to them with our own set of life circumstances, experiences and yes, perspectives.

Religion, politics, social issues and the difference between right and wrong have no easy or pat answers. We can’t boil them down to being simply a result of differing perspectives. We certainly can’t compare them to boogers and dandruff. It isn’t as simple as that.

Then again maybe it is.

Chiefs Squirt hockey club wins Presidents Cup Madden Taylor nets 5 goals in Championship game

The Chiefs Hockey Club Squirt White team won the 2019 Chicago Presidents’ Cup Tournament with an impressive 9-0 victory over the Falcons from Chesterfield, Missouri. The team bested a talented field of hockey clubs from St. Louis, Indiana, Hoffman Estates and West Dundee to win gold.

“This was some of the best team defense we have played all season,” said head coach Brian Carroll.

“They say defense wins championships and that was definitely the

case this weekend.”

Made up of players from Elmhurst, Addison, Villa Park, Bensenville and other towns, the Chiefs definitely travel well.

In the finale, the Chiefs took an early lead when Josh Redick carried the puck into the offensive zone off the opening face-off and hit Lucas Potyrala with a pass in the high slot. Potyrala skated to open ice and found Madden Taylor on the crease with a pass that Taylor deposited in the back of the net 33 seconds into

the game. The Chiefs seized a commanding 3-0 lead before the first intermission as Taylor completed the natural Hat Trick and Potyrala and Redick recorded Playmakers, each gaining three assists.

To start the second period, Danny Rudman scored a short-handed goal on a high wrist shot as time ran out on a Chiefs’ penalty. Redick recorded a goal on another assist by Potyrala before Taylor lit the lamp again. Tatiana Kallianis then got on the scoresheet when she scored

a goal on an assist from Tommy Hosler. Taylor recorded his fifth tally of the game before Rudman scored again just before the end of the second. Strong defense was key to supporting the offensive display of the first two periods. That defensive effort was led by Marco Gattone, Lucas Kabat and Jake Keller.

Forwards Santino Caponigri, Brady Carroll, Cooper Forsberg and Brooke Vogel dominated control of the puck in the final frame and maintained possession in the team’s

offensive zone to limit comeback opportunities for their opponents from the Show-Me State.

Goalie Peter Kallianis recorded his fourth shut-out victory of the tournament in the championship game.

“The team seems to be peaking at the right time,” said coach Jeff Redick. “We have playoffs and another tournament in South Bend, Indiana coming up and I think we are playing our best hockey of the season.”

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op boys swimming team placed ninth at the recent York sectional in Elmhurst.

AT-Willowbrook had 62 points and was six points out of eighth place.

John Burns took fifth in the 50 free with a time of 22.00. Evan Zimmerman was eighth in the event with a

time of 22.57.

Michal Niemirski was 21st in the 100. The freshman swam a 54.78 in the event. Sean Pienkos was 17th in the 200 with a time of 1:58.79.

Niemirski was 19th with a time of 2:00.47.

Pienkos was 13th in the 500 with a time of 5:20.64, while sophomore Cole McGinnis was 19th with a time of 5:32.96..

Zimmerman was ninth in the backstroke with a time of 56.42. Eric Hoda was 17th in the same event with a time of 1:03.20.

Aidan Nichols was 14th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.62.

Thomas Holmes followed in 18th place with a time of 1:08.99.

Marco Chaidez finished 16th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.25.

Freshmam Matthew Burrow was 20th with a time of 1:07.49.

Holmes was 18th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.81, while Burrow was 20th in 2:20.87.

AT-Willowbrook was seventh in the 200 relay with a time of 1:31.74 with Zimmerman, Nichols, Chaidez and Burns. AT-Willowbrook was 11th in the 400 relay in 3:40.59 with Hoda, Pienkos, Chaidez and Niemirski.

Fenton’s Fischer finishes 12th in state in backstroke First Bison boys swimming medalist in more than 25 years; Bison fifth at sectional

Fenton senior Nik Fischer capped off his senior swimming year in style.

Fischer finished 12th in the 100 backstroke at the recent boys state swimming finals held at New Trier High School in Winnetka.

Fischer clocked in at 51.74 in the finals of the backstroke.

Fischer is Fenton’s first boys

swimming state medalist since 1993 when the 200 medley relay team took 12th and Tim Schnulle won the state title in the 100, took second in the 50 and was part of the medley relay team that medaled.

Fischer advanced to the finals after finishing 10th in the backstroke preliminaries with a time of 51.58.

He was seeded at 52.48. Fischer’s 52.48 seed time was the highest of the 12 swimmers that advanced to the finals. The lowest seed time was 49.57.

a time of 48.10, while Kasper Wildo was 18th in 53.27. Feddersen took 15th in the 500 with a time of 5:21.94.

Fenton was fifth in the 200 relay in 1:29.37 with Oberski, Janovsky, Feddersen and Fischer.

Fischer took fourth in the backstroke and qualified for state with a time of 52.48, which was under the state cut of 53.16. He was one of six swimmers in the sectional to qualify for state in that event.

Oberski was sixth in the breaststroke with a time of 1:00.84, while Patryk Bartnik was 17th with a time of 1:09.15.

with a time of 3:40.39 with McElroy, Sporna, Jordan Loyola and Wildo.

Fenton boys basketball The Fenton boys basketball team kicked off postseason play earlier this week in the Class 4A York regional. Fenton is the No. 19 seed in the Class 4A Proviso West sectional. The Bison played a Class 4A quarterfinal game against Chicago Prosser (No. 14 seed) on Monday.

If Fenton won that game, it played No. 3 sectional seed York on Tuesday for a chance to go to the regional championship game Friday at York at 7 p.m.

The Westin Lombard Yorktown Center will host a blood drive on Monday, March 4, to honor those impacted by the tragic events in Aurora last week and as a salute to area first responders. The drive will be held in the Cypress meeting room from 1-7 p.m.

“The Westin Lombard joins the people of Aurora in standing up against this senseless violence and supporting the families of those impacted,” said General Manager Michael Feigenbaum. “We also want to recognize the heroic efforts of our area’s police officers and firefighters who work to protect our safety on a daily basis.”

The Lombard Police were among the local departments on the scene at the Henry Pratt Company.

Lawmaker puts the brakes on mileage tax proposal CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

A bill that would test a mileage tax for vehicles driving on state roads has been tabled, but that doesn’t mean it’s dead.

Chicago Democrat Marcus Evans recently filed House Bill 2864, establishing a pilot program for a 2.1-cent tax on every mile a vehicle is driven on state roads.

But Evans tabled the bill, saying he wanted to send the message that he’s not going to bring it back this session. “But if someone else wants to find a creative way to do that, then they can,” Evans said.

As cars become more efficient and more people drive electric vehicles, many states are facing a significant decline in revenue from motor fuel taxes.

These taxes usually support roads, bridges and other infrastructure for vehicular traffic. The purpose of a per-mile vehicle tax would be twofold: to bring back the revenue to support state infrastructure, and to balance taxes to ensure every driver pays a fair share for using roads.

That said, Evans doesn’t think it’s the right time to legislatively consider a per-mile tax, although Illinois, along with the 27 states that have increased their motor vehicle tax in the past four years, still needs more infrastructure funding.

To gauge just how much work might be needed before such a bill comes back, Illinois can look at Washington, one of the few states to try a similar pilot program to the one in Evans’ bill.

Reema Griffith is the executive director of Washington’s transportation commission, which oversaw the state’s mileage tax pilot program that ran from January 2018 to January 2019.

She says it took almost six years just to get the pilot program up and running.

“There was a good four years of real regimented peeling of the onion before we ever had money for a pilot,” Griffith said. “What we found out was, yeah, it’s feasible, but there’s 100 different policy

The issue of a mileage tax is complicated by many factors, including drivers who frequently cross state lines; privacy concerns with GPS-tracking devices; lack of administrative infrastructure to handle the data and enforcement of the tax; and the disproportionate effects the tax would have on urban versus rural vehicles.

Although there is much more work to be done before a pilot program launch, the idea has the apparent backing of Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who said during a January 2018 interview with the editorial board of the Daily Herald that he was open to testing out the idea.

“We spent two years on that, making a million assumptions on everything from enforcement to compliance to evasion,” Griffiths said, “so we’ve been going quite slow.”

Nonetheless, Washington’s program yielded positive feedback from the 2,000 volunteers testing various methods of data gathering on mileage. And although Griffith’s office has not yet fully analyzed the data, she said the most surprising result was how boring it seemed to be.
