The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has announced two more “Same Site” adult-use cannabis licenses and one will be the second to be licensed in Addison.

Mindful Dispensary, located at 1433 W. Fullerton Ave. Ste. C, in Addison received early approval last week for an adult use license, as did Nature’s Care Company at 975 Rohlwing Road in Rolling Meadows.

The license will permit the dispensaries to begin adult use cannabis sales at that location, provided the dispensary complies with local zoning rules or other local laws.

These recent approvals raise the total number of approved “Same Site” licenses to 48 and the total number of dispensaries licensed to sell adult use cannabis to 50.

Under the law, existing medical cannabis dispensaries are permitted to open an adult use dispensary at the same site as their medical dispensary, as well as a second site for adult use sales at a different location.

The Department anticipates receiving additional applications for early approval adult use licenses as municipalities adopt relevant zoning ordinances regarding adult use cannabis.

The Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act permits Illinois residents who are at least 21 years old to legally possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, 500 milligrams of THC contained in a cannabis-infused product, and up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate.

Fed reports benefits of U.S. ‘tortoise’ economy

rose to 2.3% in 2019, remaining below its historical norms.

After raising its lending rate by .25% in December of 2018, the Fed lowered the rate three times totaling three-quarters of 1% in 2019.

Housing starts totaled 1.298 million in 2019 and are projected at 1.306 million in 2020 and 1.323 million in 2021, all of which are still below the historical norms of 1.4 to 1.5 million.

Businesses and consumers have benefitted from relatively-low oil and natural gas costs, with the U.S. become a net exporter of energy for the first time in history, rivaling Saudi Arabia in crude oil and Russia in natural gas.

GDP—labor force growth and productivity gain—remained relatively static. The labor force had no growth due to a slow population growth and low immigration, while productivity (as a result of better equipment, improved processes, greater capital investment or a more-skilled workforce) increased only 1%.

U.S. manufacturing and labor took a dip in 2019, with the Midwest economy feeling the pinch despite major Illinois contributors such as John Deere and Caterpillar.

The extended tariff conflict with China and the renegotiation of the foreign trade agreement with Mexico and Canada (USMCA)—Illinois’ two largest trade partners—forced some manufacturers to scale back on their operations.

With the tariffs implemented in 2018, the U.S. ranks eighth in the world behind Korea, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Russia and China, and just ahead of Turkey and Indonesia. If all of the proposed 2019 tariffs were put in effect, the U.S. would rank No. 1 worldwide.

While Americans are driving vehicles that average 11 years old, auto manufacturers lowered production to 16 million vehicles, with General Motors (GM) weathering a five-week walkout by the 48,000 United Auto Workers (UAW) union members at 50 plants ending in late October.

The auto industry sold 17 million vehicles in 2019, with light truck sales up 2.4% and now accounting for threefourths of the market. Sedan sales dropped by 10.7%. Alternative-power vehicles (hybrid, electric, etc.) remained less than 5% of total sales.

The nation’s year-end unemployment rate dropped to lowest level since 1969, while the State of Illinois fell to 3.9%, including DuPage County’s low of 2.5%.

Unemployment among African Americans and Hispanic Americans also hit record lows. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) projects unemployment rates to tick up to 3.7% in 2020, 3.9% in 2021 and 4% in 2022.

While America’s economy—or Gross Domestic Product (GDP)— grew at a rate of only 2.3% in 2019 versus the 3% standard, 2.1 million new jobs were created in the past 12 months, the nation’s unemployment rate of 3.5% fell historically low and energy prices (oil and natural gas) remained well below their historical norms.

That was among the financial data shared with some 300 businesspeople and 40 exhibitors representing Elmhurst and 16 other west suburban chambers of commerce at the 18th Annual Economic Outlook Luncheon held on Friday, Feb. 7.

William A. Strauss, senior economist and economic advisor in the Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, delivered the event’s keynote address for the 13th and final time, in advance of his pending retirement this spring.

Strauss assured attendees that there are no indicators of a downturn in America’s $20 trillion economy, or of any pending “negative economic shock” that typically provides the financial impetus for a recession.

The U.S. Stock Market continues to produce record highs, despite regular volatility.

Quoting 1961 Nobel-winning Keynesian economist Paul Samuelson, Strauss quipped that, “the stock market has predicted nine of the past five recessions.”

Since the end of the “Great Recession”—which ran from December of 2007 through June of 2009—America’s economy has generated average GDP growth of 2.3% over the past 11 years since (a growth span “unprecedented” since the end of World War II) and remains more stable than any other country. Comparatively, the GDP growth rate hit 4.4% and 4.3% following the recessions of 1981-82 and 1974-75, respectively.

Only China (6.1%) and India (5.4%) reported higher GDPs in 2019 than the United States.

The Fed forecasts GDP growth at 1.8% to 2.0% for 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Addison Trail’s Lea Staller tries New York on for size Attends acting workshop in New York

Addison Trail freshman Lea Staller first performed on stage when she was in fourth grade – and she has been hooked ever since. In seventh grade, Staller realized she wants to pursue a career as an actor in New York.

This past December, Lea participated in a workshop to help develop her skills and achieve her dream. She auditioned for and was accepted into the “WERK WITH BWAY Beetlejuice Intensive,” which took place from Dec. 26 to 30 at Studios 353 in New York. The process involved submitting a performance video, a résumé and a headshot (photo).

“I didn’t really believe it at first,” Lea said. “I wasn’t expecting it, be-

cause I’m so young and only 40 people nationwide are accepted into the program.”

During the five-day intensive, she worked with several leading actors and directors from the Broadway musical “Beetlejuice,” as well as other industry leaders. She also took classes that focused on audition technique, vocal technique, marking music, headshot tips, how to build an audition book and more.

“It helped a lot with how to do a proper audition and what to bring to an audition,” Lea said. “It also was super cool to meet the actors from the show. They treated us like colleagues and taught us the skills to succeed and told us the truth about the business.”

Staller and her mother, Katherine Klimt-Staller, went to New York this past August and saw a few shows,

including “Beetlejuice.” So when Katherine saw the “WERK WITH BWAY Beetlejuice Intensive” on Facebook, she and Lea got to work with the audition process. Lea said this was her third trip to New York, and she hopes to attend college on the East Coast. She also is involved in Addison Trail Theatre and has participated in the two productions that have taken place so far during her high school career. She is in Addison Trail’s Honors Choir as well and takes voice lessons outside of school as part of that class.

“I just love performing,” Lea said.

Historical society offers two college scholarships

The Addison Historical Society has begun its annual scholarship program and will award two $1000 college scholarships to graduating high school seniors, thanks to the generous support of members and donors.

An application is currently available at the Addison Trail Guidance Office, Village Hall Front Desk, and the Addison Historical Museum. Completed applications are due by Monday, April 6, 2020.

In order to be eligible for the award, applicants must be a high school senior or one with equivalent number of credits to graduate from high school, a resident of Addison or unincorporated Addison and accepted into either a two- or four-year college. Students who are home schooled or attend schools outside of Addison are eligible as long as they reside in Addison.

Applicants must complete a personal information sheet, provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or administrator, submit a 200-word essay about how the scholarship will benefit their educational goals, and provide detailed descriptions of their school and community activities. There is no grade point average requirement for the scholarships.

A total of five collated copies of all application materials must be submitted to compete the application process. Please use a paper clip, not staples, to assemble the packets. Do not return the application via E-mail as an electronic attachment.

Illinois can now test for coronavirus in-state, cutting down wait times U.S. risk remains low; two Illinoisans who tested positive are released

The Illinois Department of Public Health now has the ability to test for the 2019 novel coronavirus in-state, meaning shorter wait times for test results for people showing symptoms of the virus and meeting certain criteria.

IDPH said in a news release Feb. 11 that Illinois is the first state to be able to do the testing without shipping specimens out of state, and results are typically available within 24 hours.

“The ability to do this testing will mean we will be able to detect any new cases of novel coronavirus earlier and prevent any possible spread,” IDPH assistant director Evonda Thomas-Smith said in the news re-

lease. “We understand there is concern about this new virus, which is why having test results back quickly can help reduce some of those concerns.”

While the World Health Organization has declared the coronavirus a global health emergency, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the risk to the U.S. public at large “remains low at this time.”

The CDC began shipping test kits to select qualified U.S. and international laboratories last week, and IDPH is working to bring testing online in its Springfield and Carbondale labs.

In Illinois, two people have tested positive for novel coronavirus. The first was a woman who had recently traveled to Wuhan, China, which is at the center of the outbreak. The second was her husband, who contracted the virus after close contact with her. Authorities said at the time the transmission of the virus from wife to husband was “not totally un-

barely take the hit. And we know the vast majority of people who are paying these bonds are not the folks that have been accused of crimes, but women.

In Cook County it’s very much black women, mothers, sisters, and partners that are taking the financial hit of paying these bonds.”

One of those women, Brittany Williams, a 29-year-old mother of three from Chicago, said her life was turned upside down in October 2017 when her husband was arrested on a traffic charge. His bail was set at $100,000, meaning he needed to pay 10 percent, or $10,000, to be released.

“This experience was traumatic because it took time away from my newborn and it caused me to get back to work before I was even ready,” Williams said. “We lost our condo in Glendale Heights, and we had to move into the city of Chicago with a family member, my sister-in-law. That was hard on us because her living arrangements were not the best. Myself and my children had to sleep on the floor.

And that alone made me feel like I had failed as a parent.”

The Feb. 13 hearing, however, came on the same day the Chicago Tribune published a story calling into question the city of Chicago’s own bail reform initiative 7.3.13that began in 2017. Under that program, which was ordered by Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans, judges in that circuit are not al2x4 lowed to set bail amounts so high that a defendant can’t afford to pay it.

Evans released a report in May suggesting there had been no increase in violent crime since that order went into effect and that only a “very small fraction” of people charged with violent crimes committed new crimes after

they were released. But an analysis by the Tribune uncovered flaws in both the data and the analysis used in that report, and the article said there was evidence that many more crimes were committed by defendants while out on bail.

Also in 2017, the General Assembly passed a statewide bail reform law that provides for a presumption that most people charged with nonviolent crimes, known as “Category B” offenses, could be released on conditions that do not require cash bonds. It also provides that cash bonds can be required for more serious charges, “Category A” offenses, but that a person could not be held solely for an inability to pay that bond.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin testified that since that law went into effect, his county has seen an overall increase of 53 percent in defendants failing to appear for their court dates.

“Many of these cases are people charged with robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated DUI—serious crimes, where defendants are failing to show up in court. That is the sign of a broken system,” Berlin said.

He also noted that under the Illinois Constitution, victims of crimes have a right to be compensated for their injuries or losses and that in many jurisdictions, bail money is used to help pay for that restitution. Without cash bail, he said, many victims could go uncompensated.

The committees also heard testimony on the subject of mandatory minimum sentences, which many people argue have led to a dramatic increase in prison populations throughout the United States.

How about playing a little Wang Chung, Chaka Khan or Kajagoogoo?

(Bonus points if you remember Kajagoogoo from the 1980s.) Or even Mr. Mister or Sister Sledge? Anything, except for what’s listed below: Honorable mention: “Uptown Funk” (Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson 2014)—The song that made Jackson, Miss. famous and introduced Michelle Pfeiffer to a new generation. Someone suggested in a tweet they were going to name their first son Bruno. Since I’ve heard one too many parents refer to their sons as “buddy” in the supermarket (“c’mon buddy”; “let’s go buddy”), hearing a parent say “c’mon Bruno” would be refreshing.

That said, don’t you get tired of hearing about Tommy being down on his luck because the union’s on strike, and his significant other, Gina, crying in the night and dreaming of running away? Perhaps Gina could use a hug, but in this case, Tommy needs to exercise some tough love. “Hey Gina, it’s time to work the diner all day and bring home your pay for love, so suck it up, buttercup.”

9. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” (Justin Timberlake 2016)—To me, “Can’t Stop the Feeling” is the heir apparent to Pharrell Williams’ feelgood “Happy.” Remember that one?

Frankly, it made me feel grumpy every time I heard it. (So does “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”)

I beg to differ. Fellas, you don’t want to get caught on the dance floor when the band cranks up the Women’s National Anthem (just trust me on this one). Once I hear … “First I was afraid; I was petrified” … that’s my cue to take cover in my safe space (i.e., the men’s restroom) and curl up into a fetal position until I get the allclear sign.

2. “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” (Journey 1981)—Journey has produced several monster hits, yet every band believes it’s their civic duty to cover this worn-out oldie. (I even heard a country-western band play it last weekend, for crying out loud!) I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction: “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” has been around nearly 40 years. If just a small-town girl, living in a lonely world, hasn’t crossed paths by now with just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit, on the midnight train goin’ anywhere, they’re never going to meet, so Please Stop Believin’.

1. “Sweet Caroline” (Neil Diamond 1969)— Friends in a social group I regularly attend ask why I’m often late for events. It’s because I hold out hope that the house band will have already played arguably the most annoying song of all time by the time I arrive. “Sweet Caroline … bop-bop-bop.” More like “Sweet Caroline … blah-blah-blah.”

Parenthood – losses and gains I’m experiencing parenthood all over again – through my daughter.

To be honest, it’s easier watching it than actually living it. For sure there’s less sleep deprivation and wet, sticky kisses. But seeing her go through all the things I did has given me various perspectives that I don’t think I could have recognized back when I was in the trenches and up to my eyeballs in dirty diapers.

It now occurs to me that parenthood brings with it both losses and gains.

One of the most obvious examples is the loss of sleep. After becoming a parent I coveted sleep for decades. (Yes, that’s a plural.) My babies never slept through the night; and then they turned into teenagers and I found myself waiting for them to come home by curfew.

I went from a person who thought she needed eight hours of sleep to one who got by on about six.

During this time, I learned that sleep can be overrated. I adapted to the change and gained an endurance I hadn’t thought possible. I also drank lots of coffee.

Another loss? That of time. Pre-children I had time for hobbies and interests. I read novels because I could. After children, I segued to reading short stories because they fit better into the time scheme of things.

While I lost the vast expanses of time to follow my own pursuits, I gained the gift of in the moment. In the moment moments are some of the richest experiences life has to offer. First words. First steps. An actual conversation with your teenager. Being there –

in the moment – to appreciate the little and the big experiences parenthood has to offer made me understand the importance of right now.

BC (before children) I used to live an orderly life. I was good at being orderly and I liked it that way.

But order and children are not a likely combination. In my experience they are a nearly impossible combination.

While losing order, I gained messy, but good chaos.

Chaos – with children – is not bad.

It is most often the opposite, except when you step on a LEGO at 2 am with bare feet on your way to the bathroom. Then, chaos can be a bit painful.

But it’s mostly good, if you let it be.

LEGOs be damned.

Order is often paired with predictability. Before children I could schedule lunch with friends. I took long showers whenever I wanted without thought. I ate when I was hungry and didn’t worry about any stomachs other than my own.

When you become a parent, prepare to throw predictability out the window.

You may have the best intentions about feeding and diapering schedules, but you are no longer in charge. You answer to a tiny person now and with that you gain a talent for flexibility. Being

flexible with your life and your schedule brings benefits.

You aren’t disappointed when something doesn’t work out because you didn’t have any expectations for the original plans. Flexibility allows (forces) you to be open to new outcomes and possibilities. It allows for and teaches you to compromise and go with the flow. It helps your kids learn these skills as well as they watch you adapt on the fly.

When I had my first child, I became a different person and a little (or very large) part of me was lost or at least changed forever. You may feel like your lose yourself (you don’t, really) but in losing the me, you are gaining an us.

After having children you are never really alone again. Not really. It’s impossible to surrender a part of your heart to another human being without being connected to them forever. Unconditionally. And truly, us is better than me.

Parenthood changes you. You lose, you gain – so much more than weight.

You become a different person. Someone you couldn’t have imaged before.

But in my experience the gains outweigh the losses. The good far outweighs the not-so-good. And although in all honesty it is a ton of work, you’d do it all over again if you could. In a heartbeat.

Students in Mrs. Gloria Velez’s 4th grade class at Ardmore School got into the spirit of Valentine’s Day by participating in a “mending hearts” project on Friday, Feb. 14. The students were decked out in sterile garb--with gowns, masks, and gloves-while they worked to save their patients by solving a number of math fractions problems. Each team of students had a patient and the patient had math problems on different parts of his/her body. The students had fun, but also took their assignment to save the patient seriously, as they worked to quickly to solve the problems correctly.

Naumovsky advances to state meet Sophomore ties for third on uneven bars at sectional

Willowbrook sophomore Bella Naumovsky earned a berth in the IHSA state gymnastics meet by tying for third place on the uneven bars at last week’s Glenbard South Sectional.

Naumovsky and Glenbard East sophomore Erin Donovan tied for third with their scores of 9.2.

The top five finishers in each sectional event automatically qualified for the state meet.

“I am so happy that I made it to state,” said Naumovsky shortly after leaving the awards stand at the sectional. “This is a pretty big deal for me. I was really nervous the whole time, but it went well.”

Naumovsky qualified for the Feb. 10 sectional at Glenbard South by winning a regional title on the uneven bars at the Lake Park Regional on Feb. 5. She also earned sectional berths on the balance beam and in floor exercises.

Naumovsky did not compete in the floor exercises at the sectional. She did participate on the balance beam, where she received a score of 8.6, good for 16th place.

Naumovsky stated that she scratched from the floor exercises at the sectional to focus on her routines on the uneven bars and the balance beam. She noted that she is still re-

covering from hip surgery, which she underwent about one year ago.

Naumovsky competed in club gymnastics up until this year. She joined the Willowbrook team this season. She competed in her first meet as a Warrior in January.

According to the IHSA’s records, Naumovsky is the first Willowbrook girls gymnast to qualify for the state meet in 11 years. Jeni Scahill qualified for the 2009 state meet in the balance beam event.

“It’s been a long time since a Willowbrook girl made it to the state meet,” said Willowbrook coach Deanna Zuchowski. “We are excited to see Bella move on.”

Willowbrook sophomore Tess Placek also competed at the sectional. She narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet on the vault. She placed seventh on the vault at the sectional, where she earned a score of 9.2. Placek also competed on the balance beam (7.55) and in the allaround competition (32.575) at the sectional.

“I couldn’t be more impressed with how Bella and Tess have been working for the last couple of weeks,” said Zuchowski. “They’ve really improved all season, and this was the culmination of all their hard work.”

The Addison Trail wrestling team emerged from one of the toughest sectionals in the state—the Conant Sectional in Hoffman Estates— with three state qualifiers.

The Blazers will send junior John Asiuras, junior Jake Matthews and senior Nick Skamra to this week’s IHSA Class 3A individual state meet in Champaign.

The top four finishers in each sectional weight level advanced to the individual state meet.

Matthews finished second at 152 pounds and now has a 26-6 overall record.

Skamra was third at 182 pounds.

He won the third-place match via fall in 1:17 and improved to 35-12 overall.

Asiuras took fourth at 120 match. He completed the season pounds. He lost via fall in the third- with a 34-13 record. place match and brings a 33-10 Yu won his first two sectional mark to the state finals. matches in the 113-pound weight class.

Makaylah Jones earns individual berth in state bowling meet Warriors seventh at Hinsdale South Sectional

The Willowbrook girls bowling team didn’t earn a state-meet berth during Saturday’s Hinsdale South Sectional, but senior Makaylah Jones qualified as an individual.

Jones will compete in the IHSA state meet, which begins this Friday at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford. She secured her state-meet berth by finishing among the top five individuals at the sectional who weren’t members of qualifying teams.

The top four teams at the sectional advanced to the state meet’s team competition. York won the Hinsdale South Sectional title with its total score of 5,630. Downers Grove South (5,528) placed second, while Metea Valley (5,291) finished third.

Hinsdale South (5,286) turned in a fourth-place showing to earn a statemeet berth. Willowbrook (4,863) placed seventh in the 12-team sectional.

Twenty-four teams—the top four teams from each of the state’s six sectionals—advanced to the team competition of the state meet.

Willowbrook qualified for the state meet in each of the previous two seasons by winning sectional titles. The Warriors won the Glenbard East Sectional in 2018. One year ago, Willowbrook won the Hinsdale South Sectional.

Jones led the Warriors in Saturday’s sectional with her six-game score of 1,127. Jones rolled scores of 189, 177 and 155 in her first three games of the day. She bowled a 195 in her fourth game and a 168 in her fifth game. Jones saved her best sectional performance for her final game, when she delivered a 243 to lock up her individual state-meet berth.

Jones posted the seventh-best total score among all individuals at the sectional.

Jones will participate in the state meet for the third straight year. She was a major contributor to Willowbrook’s 2018 and 2019 sectional-championship teams. She won individual regional championships during her sophomore and junior seasons. On Feb. 8, she won her third straight individual regional title when she posted the top six-game score—a 1,256—at the Metea Valley Regional.

The Warriors finished 18th after the first day’s competition of the 2018 state meet. The team placed 17th after one day of the 2019 state meet.

Jones noted after Saturday’s sectional that she recently committed to attend Elmhurst College, where she will study nursing and continue her bowling career as a member of the Bluejays’ women’s team.

Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming team finishes third in WSC Gold Meet Squad logs numerous all-conference finishes

Addison Trail-Willowbrook boys swimming coach Neil Wahlgren was thrilled with how his team performed at last weekend’s West Suburban Conference Gold Division Meet hosted by Downers Grove South.

AT-Willowbrook placed third overall, and Wahlgren noted each swimmer turned in impressive times, as evidenced by the multitude of all-conference honors earned at the meet.

“The guys did a really good job and a lot of them dropped a lot of time,” he said. “It was a fun meet overall. It’s always nice to beat Hinsdale South or Downers Grove South in some of the events, especially when Hinsdale South tapers for this meet.”

Downers Grove South won the conference title.

Hinsdale was second.

“Overall, the guys were out there cheering for each other and were excited about the meet,” said Wahlgren.

“That makes a difference. They dropped a lot of time and looked good in the water.”

In terms of all-conference performances at Downers South, Aidan Nichols (Willowbrook) was All-WSC Gold in the 200-yard medley relay, 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and the breaststroke.

“Aidan looked really good in the breaststroke,” said Wahlgren.

Sean Pienkos (Willowbrook) earned all-conference honors in the 500-yard freestyle, while Eric Hoda (Willowbrook) was an all-conference performer in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay.

“Sean dropped good time in the 500 freestyle and took third overall,” Wahlgren pointed out.

Marco Chaidez (Addison Trail) was all-conference in all three AT-Willowbrook relays (medley, 200 and 400).

Conor Craddock (Addison Trail) earned allconference honors in the medley and 400 relays, as well

as the backstroke, where the freshman finished third.

Michal Niemirski (Addison Trail) earned All-WSC Gold plaudits in all three relays, while Matthew Burrow (Addison Trail) was all-conference in diving and Nick Mitchell (Addison Trail) earned the honor in the butterfly.

“Michal really impressed me at this meet,” said Wahlgren.

Burrow presented an interesting case study for ATWillowbrook. He did his diving during the meet and then returned for regular swimming duties.

“He’s been diving for us all season,” said Wahlgren.

“He did a really good job of diving and completing 11 dives. It was tough because he had to dive during the meet and then come over and swim after diving.”

AT-Willowbrook’s frosh-soph team also joined in on the fun. The 200 freestyle relay won the WSC Gold title with Sam D’Alessandro, Scotty Fitzgerald, Chris Mitchell and Gerald Legaspi swimming that relay.

“The guys did a great job dropping time and finishing their races,” Wahlgren said. “It was fun to watch their improvements. I am excited to see everyone tapered at their fastest for sectionals. I know we are going to be ready for the sectional meet.

“The guys swam their best times of the season at this meet. It was cool to see what the 200 frosh-soph relay did. It shows the strength of our youth compared to other teams. All of our relays were exciting to watch.”

In the classroom, four AT-Willowbrook swimmers were cited for their academic excellence. Earning AllWSC Gold academic honors were Raymond Brisbois (Willowbrook), Hoda, Nichols and Chaidez.

“We want to keep dropping time,” said Wahlgren.

“We’re looking for personal bests. I want to see these guys drop some amazing time at sectional. That will be the joy of the sectional meet—how much time can we drop? From the beginning of the year until now, this is pretty much all we work for—this one meet. It all comes down to the sectional.”

Carlson a consistent cog for Addison Trail boys basketball team Senior ups the ante in scoring department this season

The hoop has become a magnet for Addison Trail senior boys basketball standout A.J. Carlson.

“My all-around game has improved a lot,” he said. “It’s my dribble-drive game, mostly. Last year I was looked at as the shooter on the team. That was my role, the shooter. I have developed a better driving game, for sure. I enjoy getting to the rim. Being able to shoot it kind of opens up that part of my game. I would say I am pretty good at pulling up off the drive. It’s a big part of my game, and definitely transitions and getting down the court.”

Carlson, a 6-1 senior guard, opened plenty of eyes recently with a 43-point performance against District 88 neighbor Willowbrook (Addison Trail won the game 77-70).

“I only had 12 or 14 points coming out of the half, and then I hit like four 3s and a layup within two minutes that really put us ahead. The

opening minutes of the third quarter were huge. I came out and shot with confidence and helped our team.”

The 43-point effort blew by his previous career high of 28 points, which he notched in the first game of this season against Aurora Central Catholic.

Carlson started playing the sport in seventh grader “but I never took it that serious,” he said.

“I never took it that serious. It was more just for fun. I got into basketball kind of late. I am glad I did. It’s fun. It’s definitely one of the most fun sports I have played.”

Carlson also plays football (WRDB) and baseball (shortstop) at Addison Trail.

“If I had to pick between the three, I couldn’t tell you. Whatever season it is, is my favorite,” he said. “All three are fun to play. They keep me in shape, and I love to compete. I definitely couldn’t give one up. I could have focused on two, but I couldn’t stop playing on all three.”

Carlson added being a three-sport student-athlete isn’t a walk in the park.

“It’s extremely difficult,” he said.

“I have been doing it since freshman

year. It’s time management. It definitely takes away from the social life.

I can’t work and have a job. It’s time management, really.”

Carlson said he’s looking into playing football and/or baseball at the college level.

“Maybe both,” he said. “I really haven’t decided yet” Carlson is looking to study education in college.

“Probably physical education and then maybe be a coach somewhere as well,” he said.

In his spare time, Carlson enjoys fishing or playing sports and video games with his friends.

“I grew up fishing. My grandpa would take me when I was little,” he said.

Carlson also is proud of his improvement in the classroom.

“My freshman and sophomore year I didn’t take my grades serious,” he said. “I was not focused on it. I’m still young. I won’t be 18 until late June. I was young back then and not listening and did not do so well in school. That held me back. I kind of regret that. The past two years I have

The Willowbrook boys basketball team has played several down-to-the wire games this season. The Warriors have won a few of their close games, and suffered heartbreaking losses in others.

Willowbrook experienced victory and defeat in a pair of one-point decisions last week in Villa Park. The Warriors edged Thornton Fractional South 61-60 on Friday night. One night later, the Warriors dropped a 70-69 West Suburban Gold Conference battle against Downers Grove South.

Saturday’s loss to the Mustangs moved the Warriors to 11-17 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

Senior Sam Tumilty made two free throws with 2.8 seconds on the clock to help Willowbrook to the win in Friday’s game. The Warriors trailed 60-59 when Tumilty went to the free-throw line. He made both shots to give his team the lead.

Thornton Fractional South tried and missed a shot as time expired.

Senior Everett Stubblefield scored a team-leading 24 points for the Warriors in Friday’s win. He made nine shots, including four from 3-point range. Tumilty, who connected on three 3-point shots, added 17 points.

Junior Amaris Hughes scored nine points, while sophomore Sean Paige contributed six points and eight rebounds.

Willowbrook led the Rebels 20-12 after one quarter and 32-28 at halftime. Thornton Fractional South held a 46-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Hughes scored seven of his nine points during the fourth period. He made three baskets in the final quarter, including one shot from 3-point territory.

The Warriors battled back from a double-digit deficit to nearly win Saturday’s conference game against Downers Grove South. The visiting Mustangs led Willowbrook 32-22 at halftime. The lead stood at 48-38 late in the third quarter, but Tumilty drained a pair of 3-point shots to drop Downers Grove South’s lead to 48-44 by the end of the quarter.

The Blazers senior took time as well to thank longtime head coach Brendan Lyons.

“It’s been super-fun playing for him,” Carlson said. “I love coach Lyons. He has helped me with my game and has pushed me to the next level.

He’s a real good person. It’s the same thing with coach (John) Daniels.

He’s helped me out as well.”

As the basketball calendar approaches the end, Carlson feels Addison Trail has plenty left to show.

“Hopefully we can win some more games here and go into the playoffs and see what we can do,” he said.

“Anything is possible in the playoffs.

If we end up playing a play-in game, it would be great to win that and then go on for a chance to compete for a regional title.”

Hughes made a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 63-56 with 3:24 left on the clock. Tumilty drained a 3-pointer to trim the Mustangs’ lead to 64-59 with about 3:08 remaining.

Hughes sank a 3-point shot to reduce Downers Grove South’s lead to 64-62 with 2:20 to play. Tumilty’s The Mustangs scored five points corner 3-pointer tied the score at 65in the first 35 seconds of the fourth 65 with about two minutes to play.

Following a couple of time outs, Stubblefield received an inbound pass and drove the length of the floor. He launched a driving inside shot that would have won the game.

It didn’t drop.

“If he makes that, it’s a different story,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins after Saturday’s loss.

“It seemed like we were a step slow, but we kept fighting, and it came down to the last possession. All I can ask for is that we have the opportunity at the end of the game.”

Tumilty, who drained six of nine attempts from 3-point range, scored a season-high 31 points. Tumilty made 11 of 16 shots from the field and converted all three of his free-throw attempts. He made three 3-point shots during the third quarter and added two more long-range bombs in the fourth quarter.

“Sam did a good job of picking us up and keeping us going,” said Perkins on Saturday. “He was carrying us tonight.”

Stubblefield, who made eight of nine free-throw attempts during the game, provided 18 points. Paige contributed eight points and eight rebounds. Hughes scored seven points.

Perkins noted that the Warriors have lost a bunch of other close games at the buzzer this season.

Those losses include a 51-50 conference home loss to Hinsdale South on Jan. 14, as well as two last-second losses at Hinsdale Central’s holiday tournament in December.

“Our record is not an indication of what we are,” said Perkins, whose team will open the IHSA Class 4A post-season on its own court. The Warriors are hosting a regional in March.

Willowbrook is finishing the conference season with this week’s road games at Proviso East and Leyden.

The Warriors will play a crossover game against a West Suburban Silver Conference opponent in Villa Park on Feb. 25.

Fenton boys swimming team showing consistent progress Bison preparing for Saturday’s sectional meet

As the Fenton boys swimming team prepares for Saturday’s Glenbrook North Sectional, where berths in the state meet will be on the line, Bison coach Dan Hennebry has plenty of evidence to point to that shows the progress his team has made this season.

Fenton went 2-5 in dual-meet competition, took second at the Illinois Math and Science Academy invitational and placed third at the Leyden invite. The Fenton

junior-varsity team won the IMSA invitational.

Hennebry was particularly pleased with the 200 medley relay team of Brendon Dal, Patryk Bartnik, Maciej Sporna and Kasper Widlo, which earned a third-place finish and a season-best time at the Upstate Eight Conference meet.

The 400 relay team of Sporna, Dal, Bartnik and Widlo logged a top-12 finish at the Buffalo Grove invitational. In doing so, that quartet dropped 8.7 seconds off its time.

Hennebry said key improvements have been made in the sprints with the likes of Widlo, Sporna, Alex Diaz, Nick Coker, Dante Aviles and Miguel Flores, as well as in the individual events, such as backstroke (Dal, Yael Monzalvo and Dan Roucka), breaststroke (Bartnik,

Michael Rogowski, Patrick Karbowski and Gabe Rodriguez) and butterfly (Sporna, John Hernandez and Joe Mazariegos).

Paul Sofineti, Logan Selck and Ryan Peterson have recently been focusing on the 500 freestyle.

“All three have made remarkable strides, dropping their times tens of seconds,” Hennebry noted.

Sporna, Widlo and Bartnik are the team’s captains this season.

“They continue to make an impact on the season because they work hard and have the ability to perform well in competition,” Hennebry explained. “These young men serve as the team’s guideposts for how to be a teammate and a leader by voice and by example.”

Hennebry also likes the balance his swimmers have between the

pool and the classroom.

“These are nice young men who have balance in swimming and studies, and other activities, such as band and choir,” he said.

Widlo, Bartnik, Sporna, Dal, Sofineti, Logan Selck, Diaz, Mazariegos and Peterson will lead Fenton’s efforts at Glenbrook North Saturday.

“Our season has gone well,” said Hennebry. “Assistant coach Sashko Tsintsev has done a fine job in both refining our swimmers’ techniques, as well as pushing the swimmers appropriately to achieve their best.

“This was most recently demonstrated at the Upstate Eight Conference championship on the JV and varsity levels during which the team performed well with excellent times.”

3-point range in the first half. Lyons Township made five 3-point shots in the third quarter and added one more 3-pointer in the fourth quarter. The Lions’ lead stood at 58-24 at the end of the third quarter.

Junior Annemarie Knudtson scored a team-high 12 points for the Warriors. Junior Stephanie Dasbach provided nine points and eight rebounds.

Senior K’Aliyha Herron of Willowbrook left the game after suffering an injury in the third quarter.

Dasbach, Herron and Knudtson were named to the West Suburban

Gold Conference’s all-conference team. The three Warriors joined the other members of the all-conference teams who were introduced during halftime of the Feb. 12 crossover game between Proviso East (the Gold champion) and York (the Silver champion).

York edged Proviso East 51-49 in that contest, which took place at Addison Trail.

Willowbrook began post-season play at this week’s IHSA Class 4A Batavia Regional.

The Warriors faced Batavia in a regional semifinal.

The yet-to-be-named course, designed by Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns, features 10 holes between 50 and 150 yards.

The Copper Harbor Trails Club will construct several new mountain biking trails for the 2020 season in the Upper Peninsula.

An easy crushed-gravel trail connecting the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge with Manganese Falls will stretch for more than two miles through mature forests with scenic views over Lake Superior.

Plans are underway to build 3.25 miles of single-track along the Keweenaw Point Trail, helping bridge the gap to the rugged shores of High Rock Bay. Upgrades to the Copper Harbor Trails network for 2020 will potentially include redeveloping the expert-level jump trail, Flying Squirrel; installing interpretive signage; and continuing work on the final phase of the Keweenaw Point Trail in the wilderness of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
