Following a trial that lasted three days, the jury deliberated less than one hour before Byron Auterberry, 34, of Chicago, was found guilty of two counts of aggravated assault and one count of “aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer.” In February of 2018, the Independent reported that in the vicinity of York & Crestview Sts. in north Elmhurst, local officers conducted a routine traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Auterberry. As one of the police officers approached Auterberry’s vehicle from the front, Auterberry drove his vehicle toward the officer, coming within just a few feet of the officer, causing the officer to discharge his service weapon. As Auterberry drove toward the officer, he crashed into another vehicle before fleeing the scene. An investigation led police to Auterberry who was taken into custody the following day without incident.
