Man from Lombard kidnapped in Afghanistan According to a story published last week in Newsweek, Mark R. Frerichs of Lombard, a U.S. government contractor, was kidnapped in Afghanistan on Jan. 31 by a group of militants aligned with the Taliban.

The Newsweek story reports that Frerichs, 57, was kidnapped in the Afghanistan province of Khost in the southeastern part of the country that borders the Federally Administered Tribal Areas—an underdeveloped region between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

According to Newsweek, “While no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, U.S. officials believe the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network orchestrated the operation.”

In a statement to the Daily Herald released through a family friend, Art Frerichs, Mark’s father, said, “I’m a person of deep faith. I also have deep faith in President Donald Trump, the FBI and our military officials to help release the safe return of my son.”

Art Frerichs owns Art’s Master Mechanics Auto Repair in Lombard.

“He is a great guy. I love him.

I hope everything works out. I’m not real happy about this. Emotionally, it’s been very upsetting,” Art Frerichs told Fox 32 News Chicago in an interview Feb. 6.

Listed on his Linkedin page as managing director, eastern sector, of ILS (International Logistical Support), a U.S. government contractor, Mark Frerichs also was a former U.S. Navy deep sea diver (deep sea marine salvage, recovery and harbor clearance).

Additionally, he has lived, worked and consulted in Iraq, Sudan and other conflict zones for more than 10 continuous years. He has been traveling to Afghanistan on a regular basis since 2012.

U.S. officials have indicated they are not sure how Frerichs, a graduate of Glenbard East High School, was kidnapped. An FBI-led multi-agency task force—the Hostage Recovery

Fusion Cell—is reportedly leading the efforts to find Frerichs.

Illinois Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran, said in a statement Feb. 6 (published

in the Daily Herald) that “I am aware of reports that an American citizen from Illinois has been taken captive in Afghanistan. My staff and I are working closely with the State De-

partment and (Department of Defense) to gather more information.

My heart goes out to the family of this individual and we will all work hard to get him released.”

Addison is only the fourth fire department in Illinois to earn this recognition.

The department earned the elite SHARP status after completing a thorough health and safety evaluation by Illinois OSHA’s On-Site Consultation Program.

“The Addison Fire Protection District has gone above and beyond to prove its dedication to workplace health and safety,” said Michael Kleinik, director of the Illinois Department of Labor. “They earned this prestigious designation and have set an example for health and safety that other departments should follow.”

By earning SHARP status, the Addison Fire Protection District is exempt from routine Illinois OSHA inspections while the SHARP certification remains valid through December 2021. The Addison Fire Protection District operates three fire stations that are staffed by a paid force of approximately 70 personnel. In addition, the district provides contracted paramedic services with advanced life-support ambulances.

Fire Chief Scott Walker said his department has long taken health and safety seriously and have made some significant achievements in recent years.

In 2018, the Illinois Public Risk Fund, which is the largest self-insured pool for workers compensation coverage in Illinois, named Addison Fire Protection District its

“Member of the Year.”

Chief Walker notes that besides keeping workers safe, a focus on health and safety can pay off in other ways as well, especially for taxpayers.

“In the last little less than a decade, we’ve cut our workers compensation insurance costs in half,” said Walker.

It wasn’t until the Troy Fire Department earned the SHARP designation in 2016 that Addison became aware of the program. Walker said the main appeal of pursuing SHARP recognition was to have an independent third-party evaluation of how his department was doing on health and safety matters.

“We wanted to have [Illinois OSHA] in to validate that what we were doing was right,” said Walker, who said working with the on-site consultation program went smoothly. On the heels of the SHARP evaluation, the department is doing some restructuring that will create a battalion chief position responsible for training, health, safety and compliance.

“We will have a chief officer that will be even more focused on the health and safety of our employees,” said Walker.

Addison joins the fire departments in Troy, Staunton and Posen in earning the SHARP distinction so far in Illinois.

County Coroner releases 2019 opioid statistics

DuPage County Coroner, Richard Jorgensen MD, has completed evaluation of the Opioid related deaths for 2019. Heroin related deaths have fallen again in 2019. Beginning in 2015 the influx of illicit fentanyl has changed the nature of this epidemic.

The number of deaths related to fentanyl alone once again has increased as well as heroin mixed with fentanyl.

There also has been a shift in the ages of the deceased. There has been a decrease in the teens and twenty’s and an increase in each decade after.

“The Opioid epidemic continues to destroy the lives of too many DuPage County residents,” Dr. Jorgensen stated. “The influx of potent synthetic opiates including fentanyl has increased significantly, and now represents a higher percentage of illicit drug usage and cause of death than heroin alone. I and my office remain committed to continue our efforts to fight against this plague through education, support of drug treatment and the DuPage County Narcan Program.

“The statistics are difficult to compare across the state due to differences in testing labs and what drugs are being tested. I applaud our County Board for providing funds to use the best lab in the country and to perform the sophisticated testing necessary to identify the many types of fentanyl that are on being used.”

Sarah Huckabee Sanders to keynote Illinois Right To Life event

Illinois Right to Life announced on Wednesday, Feb. 5 that Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former White House Press Secretary, will be the featured keynote speaker for the 52nd annual Leaders for Life banquet.

State Rep. Kathleen Willis (D-Northlake) is highlighting efforts of the Property Tax Relief Task Force, measures to combat vaping among youth, and the election of state Sen. Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, as Senate President.

“The Property Tax Relief Tax Force is in the process of finalizing comprehensive recommendations on the most effective ways to reduce the property tax burden across the state,” she said. “For far too long, Illinois has placed a heavy burden on the middle class by having local school districts be primarily dependent on property tax revenues to fund their operations. This is something we are looking to address.”

Willis serves on the Property Tax Relief Task Force and is continuing to explore how to address the state’s property tax crisis by regularly meeting with experts and Democratic and Republican colleagues.

Willis is also working to protect young people from harmful vaping and tobacco-related products, which reached unprecedented levels over

leaders from this great conflict and others, and discusses what we all can learn from their successes and failures.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College. A book signing will follow the lecture, and copies of Atkinson’s books will be available for purchase.

Praised for combining research with a vivid writing style, Atkinson’s “The British are Coming” (May 2019) is his ninth book, and his first since completing “Liberation Trilogy,” about World War II. A former staff writer and senior editor at The Washington Post, Atkinson is a twotime Pulitzer Prize winner for his work there, and also won a Pulitzer in 2003 for the first of his World War II histories, “An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943.”

Gun rights advocates sue State Police for alleged FOID delays

A pair of gun rights advocacy groups are suing the Illinois State Police, its director and the chief of the Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau for “not acting in a timely manner on Firearm Owner Identification card and concealed carry applications.”

The gun rights groups said the lawsuit was filed on behalf of Illinois residents Ryan A. Thomas and Goran Lazic in the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division federal court. The news release said Thomas and Lazic have been waiting for their FOID cards and licenses for three years.

The lawsuit contends the State Police, “has swept or transferred funds totaling more than ($29.5 million) from the State Police Firearms Services Fund, the State Police Operations Assistance Fund, and the State Police Services Fund away from these funds and into other accounts.”

According to the complaint, the money should have been used for the administration of the FOID card act, background checks for firearm-related services, and concealed carry licensing.

“Instead, the more than ($29.5 million) has been subject to interfund transfers which are ostensibly to be repaid but which have not been, or swept into other accounts without an obligation to reimburse the funds at all,” according to the lawsuit.

“The sweeping of funds has denied qualified Illinois citizens their rights and the ability to defend themselves and their families,” SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb said in the release. “Because of this practice, ISP processing of FOID and concealed carry applications has slowed to a crawl, allowing paperwork to languish. That’s not just poor performance, it’s pathetic.” ISP spokesperson Beth Hundsdorfer, however, said in a statement the ISP does “not have the authority to ‘sweep’ funds.”

“In 2015 and 2018, $13.2 million was swept from the Firearms Service Fund into the general fund during the budget crisis. Under the current fiscal year, funds have not been swept, allowing the Firearms Services Bureau to start filling 17 analyst vacancies, procure technology to offer better customer service and to begin building a new Appeals Bureau,” she said.

She added that 90 percent of FOID applications were on average processed in fewer than 30 days and it took an average of 65 days to renew a FOID card in 2019.

Things to celebrate in February

This month, President’s Day will be celebrated across the nation but here in Illinois, we take it a little more seriously because our favorite son Abraham Lincoln was born (in Kentucky, by the way) on Feb. 12, 1809. George Washington’s birthday falls on Feb. 22, 1732 (in Virginia), which happens to be my mother’s birthday – the Feb. 22 part, NOT the 1732 part!

The other birthday worth celebrating this month is my uncle, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (yes, I’m really an heir) on Feb. 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine.

Then of course, February is Black History Month and “Uncle Henry” and his best friend, then-U. S. Senator Charles Sumner, were both staunch abolitionists. All these fun facts come together in certain passages of Uncle Henry’s journals, all of which I own (edited collections, not the actual journals – I wish!). Enjoy these actual passages from the journals of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: May 18, 1860 “Clear, warm, and sunny among the cherry and peach blossoms in the garden. The papers announce the nomination of Mr. Lincoln of Illinois as Republican candidate for President.”

GreenMan returns to the scene of the crime GreenMan Theatre returns to the scene of the crime for their 16th annual Murder Mystery Fundraising Event “Speakeasy or Die Hard 2.”

The original “Speakeasy” premiered as GreenMan’s dinner show ten years ago. Carolyn Thomas-Davidoff, writer and director of the show, is quite excited about the opportunity to revisit this hilarious story.

She says she loves working with her cast and has revised the show in several ways with the new actors.

Carolyn says “Speakeasy” offers the

audience “romance, adventure, and action” along with songs and dance.

There are only five performances of “Speakeasy or Die Hard 2.” The production opens Friday, Feb. 21 and runs through Sunday, March 1. Friday and Saturday performances start at 7 p.m., Sunday at 6 p.m. Please note: there is no performance on Sunday, Feb. 23.

All performances take place in the upstairs banquet hall at Angelo’s Ristorante at 247 N. York St. in Elmhurst. Doors open an hour before the show begins with an opportunity to

mingle with the actors, in character, during a social hour, and also for audience members to get valuable clues to help solve the mystery. Tickets are $55 and include a buffet-style Italian feast. The show is set in Chicago during

What could be better for an evening of entertainment? After the detective arrives, the audience will have an opportunity to win a prize by guessing the killer or killers. Prizes may also be awarded to audience members

who dress up in the style of the show, 1920s glitz and glamour. All will be revealed at Angelo’s Ristorante this February and March with hilarious results.

GreenMan Theatre’s murder mystery fundraiser helps benefit its programs throughout the year. Shazad Mehta, who plays one of the gangsters, says that the dinner theatre format is a great way to experience a show, and there will be “nothing but smiles afterwards.”

Lake Park fourth graders host ‘Trade Show’ Students in Mrs. O’Brien’s 4th grade class at Lake Park School presented a Trade Show that was packed with visitors on Friday, Feb. 7. The trade show was an idea that found its origin in the 4th graders’ book study of The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies.

The story, which is about a brother and sister who are competing to raise the most money with their individual lemonade stands, prompted classroom discussions about the things that are necessary to run a successful business.

In order to get their trade show idea going, the 4th graders brainstormed to determine what kind of goods or services that they could “sell.” Once they settled on their product, they began to work on their

business plans, determining cost and profit, creating slogans and sales pitches, and producing commercials for their products, using green screen technology to give their ads a professional look.

Parents, grandparents, teachers, and students from other classrooms visited the trade show and the 4th graders had the chance to give their individual presentations often. Among the goods and services available were cookie bracelets, donuts, breakfast, jewelry, science tutoring, hockey, baseball, swimming, and Taekwondo training. Student displays included props to draw the customer’s interest as well as commercials and product information that was available on their computer tablets.

Addison Trail wrestling team sends five to sectionals Four Blazers reach championship match

The Addison Trail wrestling team emerged from one of the state’s toughest regionals with five wrestlers holding sectional qualifications.

The Blazers had four wrestlers reach the championship match at the Class 3A Willowbrook regional Saturday in Villa Park and another win his third-place bout.

Adam Skrzypek (113 pounds), John Asiuras (120 pounds), Jake Matthews (152 pounds) and Xavier Sierra (220 pounds) all wrestled for regional titles at their respective weight classes but lost to Montini

foes in their respective finales.

“Each of them lost to one of the top-ranked guys in the state,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Rosengrant. “All four lost to Montini guys, but they all competed very well.

They showed the can hang with the best guys in the state.”

Rosengrant saw plenty he liked among the four regional title finalists.

“Adam in the semifinals wrestled a kid from Willowbrook who was big and strong, and in the beginning of the match it seemed like it was going to be a barnburner. Adam threw him and put him to his back and pinned him. That was a nice moment,” the coach said.

“John is competing at a real high level now. I think he can make a nice run (this) weekend. Jake had two tough matches. Both guys he beat had six total losses. Against the guy

in the finals, I like the way Jake competed. He’s not backing down.

“He’s wrestling guys ranked higher than him. That’s how you get better and that’s what we are looking for. Xavier took care of his business and did what he had to do. He didn’t make mistakes in the semifinals and wrestled smart. You have to do the little things the right way in those close matches.”

Nick Skamra took third at 182 pounds and earned a sectional berth.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the sectional round.

“Nick avenged a loss from earlier in the season to a Leyden kid,” Rosengrant said. “Nick was a four seed and beat that kid who beat him earlier. If he hadn’t lost that match earlier in the year, he might have been the two seed. He did a good

job.”

Freshman Seth Skamra finished fourth at 195 pounds and is a sectional alternate.

“Seth is a freshman who was unseeded,” Rosengrant said. “What he did was very nice.”

Rosengrant noted that Addison Trail brought 11 wrestlers out of a possible 14. “Giulian Frontier got hurt earlier in the week and couldn’t come,” he said. “We missed having a few guys and that hurt us with the team race a little bit.”

Addison Trail finished fourth as a team in the regional. Only the regional champion advances to the dual-team sectional portion of the state series.

“The kids wrestled well and did what they were supposed to do,” said Rosengrant. “They wrestled to what their expectation was. We got

through everybody we expected to get through and having Seth as an alternate was a nice bonus.”

Rosengrant said Addison Trail’s competitive schedule has paid off for his group.

“Most definitely,” he said. “We knew from our schedule that we could wrestle at this level. At the seeding meeting some of our guys had a couple more losses than other teams, but that hard work is showing at this time of the year.”

The coach is excited about Saturday’s sectional at Conant in Hoffman Estates where berths in the Class 3A state finals in Champaign will be on the line. The top four wrestlers at the sectional level advance to state.

“We have four or five guys with a real shot to get downstate,” Rosengrant said. “None of them are a fluke.”

Willowbrook wrestling team advances four to sectional round Seymore, Brockie advance to championship matches

The Willowbrook wrestling team had itself a double treat on Saturday.

Not only did the Warriors host a Class 3A regional on their home mats, but they ended up qualifying four wrestlers for this coming Saturday’s Class 3A Conant Individual Sectional in Hoffman Estates.

The top three finishers in each of the regional’s weight levels advanced to the individual sectional.

The wrestlers who finish in the top four in their weight divisions at the sectional will qualify for the IHSA individual state meet in Champaign.

Junior Elijah Brockie finished second at 195 pounds at the regional, as did senior Zach Seymore at 132 pounds.

Senior Gabe Yu took third at 113 pounds, while senior John Peterson placed third at 220 pounds. Brockie (34-8), Seymore (32-11), Yu (3010) and Peterson (29-13) head to Conant, where berths in the state meet will be on the line.

Yu and Peterson both secured their sectional berths by scoring first-period pins over their opponents in the regional’s third-place matches.

Junior David Kapica (23-13) placed fourth at 145 pounds and is a sectional alternate.

Willowbrook finished the regular season with a 16-10 overall mark in duals and went 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

“We have been fighting hard and peaking at the right time,” Willowbrook coach Tim Ortiz said. “The guys have wrestled well.”

Ortiz noted that one wrestling media outlet ranked Willowbrook in the Class 3A honorable mention team rankings last week.

“That is a nice accomplishment for the team,” he said. “They have been working hard and doing everything right. They work for each other. It goes to show that all the work during the season and in the off-season is paying off.”

Ortiz said Willowbrook was competitive in its WSC Gold duals. “In the conference we were two or three individual matches away from being 4-2 or 5-1,” he said. “It was close.

Every match we lost was close within a match or two that could have gone either way. It shows the growth we are having. We are starting to get to where we want to be as a program.

We fell right in the middle and our goal is to be in the top two or three teams. I’m happy.

“Now, we need to keep climbing in the right direction and keep climbing up the conference. Hopefully we can compete and win a conference title here soon.”

In addition to Brockie, Seymore, Yu, Peterson and Kapica, Senior Wyatt Borri brought a 27-12 record into the regional at 170 pounds, while sophomore Nick Mabutas was 23-11 heading into the postseason at 152.

“The records our guys have are not bad, especially the way we changed up the schedule this year,” said Ortiz. “We were in tougher tournaments and the schedule as a whole was tougher. Those records let the kids realize how all that hard work does pay off and it is not going unnoticed. Guys are wrestling hard and learning to wrestle every position.”

Brockie and Seymore went undefeated in WSC Gold duals and will

be locks for all-conference accolades when that voting occurs. They also were honorable mentions in last week’s Class 3A state rankings by one wrestling media service.

“Elijah is consistently been a leader for us,” said Ortiz. “He’s a guy we can count on to get a win when we need it. Zach is the same thing. He’s been in the varsity lineup for four years now and has taken on a leadership role. He’s not wrestling for himself. He’s wrestling for the team.

He’s always going out there and chasing bonus points, if not pins, for the team. Gabe Yu has been the same way. He’s wrestled tough as a senior. He’s been in the lineup for a few years now and he finds ways to get bonus points for the team.”

Ortiz pointed out Mabutas enjoyed a fine showing at this season’s large tournament in Sycamore, where he recorded four pinfall victories and won his weight class there.

“He has his head on the right track,” the coach said. “He puts pressure on himself to pick up big wins and bonus points for the team, which we love. At the same time, he’s still young—he’s only a sophomore. We are working on getting him to understand he doesn’t always have to chase team points and can wrestle more freely. He’s understanding that and has been looking better.”

Ortiz also had high praise for Kapica.

“David is starting to figure things out in terms of not getting caught up in wins and losses and going out there and performing,” he said. “We tell them to just go out and wrestle hard for six minutes and let the wins and losses take care of themselves.

The IHSA released the complete list of at-large qualifiers for sectional competitions after the conclusion of last week’s 16 regional events.

Both Addison Trail and Willowbrook girls gymnasts competed in the Glenbard South Sectional earlier this week.

They earned their sectional berths with their performances at the Lake Park Regional on Feb. 5.

The top five finishers in each regional event, including the allaround competition, automatically qualified for the sectional. Additional gymnasts earned at-large berths in each event.

Automatic qualifiers included Willowbrook sophomore Bella Naumovsky, who won the regional title on the uneven bars with a 9.125. Naumovsky tied for fifth on the balance beam (8.575).

tional berth in the vault after placing fifth at the regional with a 9.05.

Placek earned an at-large sectional berth in the all-around competition with her score of 32.7.

Two Addison Trail gymnasts—junior Francesca Scarbaggio and freshman Maddie Muccianti—also earned at-large berths to the sectional’s all-around competition.

Scarbaggio turned in an all-around score of 32.325 at the regional, while Muccianti delivered an allaround total of 31.0.

Placek earned an at-large sectional berth on beam (8.3), while Naumovsky earned an at-large berth on floor exercises (8.625).

Lake Park won the team title at the four-team regional. The Lancers finished just ahead of Glenbard North in the team standings. Lake Park earned a score of 139.75, while Glenbard North finished at 138.15.

Willowbrook (128.0) placed third, while Addison Trail (123.70) finished fourth.

Warriors finish conference season with a victory Herron scores 18 points in her final home game as a Warrior

The Willowbrook girls basketball team completed its West Suburban Gold Conference season with Friday’s 66-40 win over Morton in Villa Park.

The win gave the Warriors an overall record of 15-12, and a 9-3 mark in conference play. Willowbrook finished second to Proviso East in the conference standings.

The Warriors are completing the regular season with this week’s crossover game against a West Suburban Silver Conference opponent.

Willowbrook will open the IHSA Class 4A post-season with a Feb. 18 game against Batavia at the Batavia Regional. The Warriors are the No. 8 seed in the Hoffman Estates Sectional. Batavia is the sectional’s No. 10 seed.

Herron finished the game with a team-leading 18 points. She also pulled down 10 rebounds. Junior Stephanie Dasbach scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Juniors Hannah Guthrie and Annemarie Knudtson both scored seven points.

Junior Abbey Spada contributed six points. Richey and juniors Kenya Lewis and Kaylan Monday each provided four points.

“It does help,” said Jones of her past victories. “But the main thing is just keeping your mind off the bowling and staying focused on having fun.”

Jones, who did not compete in a regional during her freshman season, added that the Willowbrook team’s success is vastly more important than any of the Warriors’ individual results.

The Willowbrook team won regional and sectional titles in each

of the previous two seasons. The Warriors didn’t begin the current post-season with another regional plaque, but they did advance to the next round.

“The biggest thing is that we advanced,” said Allen. “We’re moving on. We wanted to win, but we did break that top four and get through to the sectional.”

Senior Ashley DeLeon of the Warriors finished sixth in the regional’s individual standings with her six-game total of 1,175. Sophomore Megan Beausoleil (1,112) of Willowbrook placed 10th among all individuals at the regional. Senior Victoria Salazar (1,083) provided a 15th-place finish, while freshman Christina Pettinger (975) finished 24th.

As one of the top four teams at the regional, Willowbrook secured a berth in this weekend’s Hinsdale South Sectional.
