Executives from Portuguese mobility services company A-to-Be and local officials were scheduled to tour Elite Manufacturing in Bloomingdale on Tuesday, Nov. 28 as it prepares for the relocation of its U.S. operations from Colorado to DuPage County following its recent award to supply the Illinois Tollway with 270 Automatic Toll Payment Machines (ATPMs).

A-to-Be was recently selected to supply the Illinois Tollway with 270 Automatic Toll Payment Machines (ATPMs), which will improve service to tollway users, including the underbanked, while saving the Illinois Tollway significant operational costs.

The ATPM machines will be built through a partnership with Elite Manufacturing, an advanced machine design and fabrication company located at 333 Munroe Drive in Bloomingdale. A-to-Be has been active in Portugal for 30 years and has been operating in the U.S. for the last three years from its headquarters in Colorado. Its U.S. headquarters relocated to Downers Grove on Nov. 1, 2017.

Women’s group calls for healthcare for businesses of all sizes Open enrollment period for individuals now through Dec. 15

The Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC) and Smart Policy Works released a survey last week exploring the need for healthcare reform that works for businesses of all sizes in 2018. The survey was intended to give a voice to these employers’ and gauge their perspectives on the ongoing healthcare debate.

“The findings are clear – women business owners view offering affordable, quality health insurance to their employees as a top priority,” said Emilia DiMenco, president and CEO for the WBDC. “To keep small business employers competitive and protect entrepreneurship, we must make it easier and more affordable for the millions of small businesses operating in our communities to have and provide health coverage.”

The survey was conducted with the WBDC’s network of certified women business owners from its nine-state region, including Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Minnesota, Kan-

sas, Iowa, Nebraska and North Dakota.

“Small businesses generate two out of three new jobs in the United States and contribute to the strength of our economy,” said Geraldine Sanchez Aglipay, outreach manager of the Midwest Region and Greater Chicago for Small Business Majority. “That’s why it is so important that we take into account their opinions on policies that can preserve and improve upon the healthcare law and help their businesses. There is so much at stake for small businesses – and our overall economic health as a nation – if we ignore this incredibly valuable population.”

This is the second survey produced by the Women’s Business Development Center and Smart Policy Works, formerly Health and Disability Advocates. The previous survey was conducted in 2016 with the same pool of participants. The new survey findings present several common themes, including a desire for greater cost protections and conscious decisions by lawmakers to address the growing uncertainty in the healthcare landscape.

The current Open Enrollment Period for the Individual Health Insurance Marketplace is from Nov. 15 to Dec. 15, 2017.

DuPage County Board approves 2018 budget Property tax levy stays flat; $55.6 million tabbed for storm water projects, more

The DuPage County Board approved the 2018 budget on Tuesday, marking the 10th consecutive year the County has passed a budget with no property tax increase. The 2018 budget is $439.6 million, with expenditures out of the General Revenue Fund at $176.9 million, down slightly from the previous year.

The proposed budget has a full-time headcount of 2,178, which is down from 2,270 in 2010.

“Every year we strive to live within our means while offering the highest level of service without raising property taxes,” said

County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “This year was more difficult than ever as the General Assembly kept more than $3 million in tax revenue that is usually returned to the County to fund services for our residents.”

In his remarks at last week’s meeting, Chairman Cronin thanked countywide elected officials for working collaboratively in each of their offices to balance the budget.

Finance Committee Chairman Paul Fichtner noted the County’s General Revenue Fund was significantly impacted by the reductions.

“Our General Revenue Fund provides money for critical areas of service including public safety, senior care, the subsidy for our DuPage Care Center and other essential components for the operation of County government,” he

said.

The 2018 spending plan includes $55.6 million in total capital including projects for storm water, drainage and road construction. The property tax levy remains flat for the tenth year in a row at $66.9 million.

The budget includes a $100,000 allocation to continue the fight against heroin in DuPage County. The DuPage County budget takes effect Dec. 1.

DuPage Forest Preserves offer flurry of winter fun From ice fishing to snowshoeing to cross-country skiing, the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County gives residents plenty of reasons to get outside and play this winter.

“The forest preserves take on a quiet beauty in the winter, and we’ve

got a lot of great ways to enjoy the snow-covered scenery,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Marsha Murphy, District 1.

“We provide a sure cure for cabin fever and help you connect to nature year-round,” said Forest Preserve

District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

When there’s plenty of snow on the hill (usually more than 3 inches), thrill-seekers can snow tube down the 800-foot run on Mount Hoy at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville.

The rental area is open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekends Dec. 2 – Feb. 25 plus Dec. 26 – 29, Jan. 1 – 5, 15 and 22, and Feb. 19. Inner tube rentals are $5 per day ($7 for nylon tubes) and end at 3:30 p.m. Only District tubes are allowed.

Visitors can also explore the forest preserves with rented snowshoes.

Rentals are $8 for two hours or $13 per day and are available when there’s ample snow on the trails. ● When Mount Hoy’s open, rentals are available at the base of the hill until 2 p.m. ● On weekdays when Mount Hoy isn’t open, rentals are available 8 a.m.

Visitors can also rent daily 10 a.m.

– 2 p.m. at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center in Oak Brook. Call 630-850-8110 for availability.

At Kline Creek Farm in West Chicago, visitors can enjoy 20-minute horse-drawn sleigh rides Dec. 21 – 23, Dec. 28 – 31, and Jan. 4 – 6 at 2, 2:30 and 3 p.m. Rides are on a first-come, first-served basis and use wagons if there’s not ample snow on the trails. Rides are $5 per person ages 5 and up and are free for kids under 5. Children under 13 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration is not required, and the District will cancel rides if there’s severe weather. For trail conditions or to arrange for private group rides, call 630-876-5900.

For fans of cross-country skiing, rangers groom more than 70 miles of trails at forest preserves such as Blackwell in Warrenville, Fullersburg Woods in Oak Brook, Danada and Herrick Lake in Wheaton, Greene Valley and Springbrook Prairie in Naperville, Mallard Lake in Hanover Park, Meacham Grove in Bloomingdale, Waterfall Glen in Darien and West DuPage Woods in West Chicago. Visitors who aren’t classic skiers should use the inside of the trails to avoid damaging the set tracks.

Ice fishing, ice skating and sledding are allowed at most forest preserves, although never at Spring Creek Reservoir in Bloomingdale.

Additionally, sledding is not allowed at Mount Hoy at Blackwell or at the closed landfill sites at Greene Valley and Mallard Lake. The District does not monitor ice conditions, so visitors go on ice at their own risk.

As a guideline not a guarantee, there should be at least 4 inches of clear ice for any activity. Anglers can find complete regulations in the online fishing guide.

Finally, when there’s adequate snow conditions, mushers can dog sled on the Thunderbird Spur Trail at Greene Valley and on the West Branch Regional, Bobolink and connector trails north of Mack Road at the McKee Marsh area of Blackwell.

The hotline is staffed by attorneys Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and serves as the starting point to connect to IL-AFLAN’s network. The network will offer legal advice and brief services and then help connect veterans and military members to legal aid providers near their community. Nine organizations across the state have received grants to provide legal aid services as part of the IL-AFLAN. While a few other states have veterans’ legal aid initiatives, Illinois is the largest state to combine a hotline with a legal help provider network.

Cullerton urges local attorneys looking to offer pro bono assistance to contact any of the nine organizations who are part of the network and say that they want to help with IL-AFLAN. “This is another example of our community and state binding together to honor and respect our military men and women,” Cullerton said.

Edward-Elmhurst DEXA body composition test helps identify health risks

Edward-Elmhurst Health is now offering the DEXA Whole Body Composition Test, a scan that is the most accurate, indepth analysis of a person’s body fat, muscle, bone and water mass, and can identify health risks and pinpoint problems in the body before they become serious.

The DEXA scan is a tool to use before starting a specific diet and exercise plan – it determines the exact locations and percentage of overall body

fat, which allows a person to build a plan to target their specific needs. DEXA can then be used to monitor the plan’s success.

The FDA-approved scan is also able to quantify levels of the dangerous, deep belly fat, also known as visceral fat, found in the spaces between abdominal organs and linked to a number of health problems, including metabolic disturbances, risk for cardiovascular disease, breast cancer (in

women) and type 2 diabetes.

Visceral fat is also linked to higher cholesterol and insulin resistance, and is typically influenced by heredity and hormones.

The DEXA scan also provides the exact location of lean muscle, which plays a key role in metabolism and preventing pathologic conditions and chronic diseases. Maintaining muscle mass is also important for preventing osteoporosis.

Specifically targeting these

muscles and strengthening them improves balance, blood sugar levels and sleep.

The DEXA scan, which takes about 15 minutes, uses a lowdose x-ray beam that is about one-tenth of the exposure of a dental x-ray.

Willowbrook girls bowling team fourth at Plainfield Central Warriors girls basketball team faces Leyden; Football team rakes in honors

The Willowbrook girls bowling team had a strong showing at the recent Plainfield Central invitational.

The Warriors took fourth out of a large 24-team field.

Sophomore Makaylah Jones led the Warriors with a 1,134 series. She had games of 205, 180, 200, 140, 199 and 210.

Junior Holly Helsper was next with an 1,131 series. Helsper had games of 187, 211, 183, 227, 169 and 154.

Senior Dana Sasenick had the high game for the Warriors with a 236.

As a team, the Warriors shot a 5,346 series.

Willowbrook girls basketball The Willowbrook girls basketball team dropped a recent 47-29 West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest to Leyden.

Willowbrook led 12-9 after the first quarter and trailed 23-21 at halftime. Leyden outscored Willowbrook 14-2 in the third quarter and 10-6 in the fourth quarter.

Katelyn McCann and CeCe Lizusain each had nine points. McCann also had nine rebounds and four steals, while Lizusain had a teamhigh 16 rebounds. Jayla Smith added five points.

In other recent action, the Warriors dropped a 69-56 WSC Gold game to Downers Grove South.

Willowbrook led 21-15 after the first quarter, but trailed 42-39 at halftime and 56-54 after three quarters.

Downers South outscored Willowbrook 13-2 in the fourth quarter.

Emma Barrington led the Warriors with 13 points and four steals.

McCann added 12 points, while Lizusain had 10 points and seven rebounds. Sydney Verdino added eight points. Barrington, McCann and Verdino made two 3-pointers each.

Smith added eight assists and four steals.

Willowbrook football The Willowbrook football team had success on and off the field this season.

The Warriors finished the season 10-2 and won the West Suburban

Conference Gold Division title outright at 6-0. Willowbrook made it to the quarterfinal round of the Class 6A playoffs. It was the second year in a row that Willowbrook advanced to the quarterfinal round.

Earning all-WSC Gold Division honors for the Warriors are Kevon Dobbins, Nick Sabatino, Jacob Entwistle, Scott Tumilty, Sam Tumilty, Brandon Loth, John Taylor, Christian Washington, Matt Knudtson, Jack Jessen and Edgar Quintas—a total of 11 players.

Earning all-WSC Gold academic honors for their work in the classroom are: Sikander Zafar, Sabatino, Taylor, Jessen, Chase Cavanaugh, J.T. Ceh, Tyler Guerrero, Liam Dilger, Loth, Sean Olson and Betty Ann Garrett—again, a total of 11 players.

Jessen was named the WSC Gold Division MVP, while Garrett earned Gold Division kicker of the year honors.

Martique Barksdale was named special teams player of the year in the WSC Gold, while Quintas was tabbed the WSC Gold offensive lineman of the year.

Willowbrook boys basketball team wins Stagg tournament With strong, experienced returning cast, Warriors have their sights set high this season

Last year, the Willowbrook boys basketball team did the regular-season trifecta sweep by winning tournaments at Thanksgiving, Christmas and over the Martin Luther King holiday.

To kick off this season, the Warriors already have checked one box of that list. Willowbrook went a perfect 4-0 to win the recent Stagg tournament.

The Warriors scored a 79-50 win over Argo, a 73-46 win against Nazareth Academy a 60-35 victory against Chicago Lindblom and a 7252 win against Stagg. It was Willowbrook’s second year in a row winning the tournament.

“We did a little bit of everything,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins. “’We won all our games by more than 20 points. We played well overall offensively and defensively.”

Perkins saw many positives on both sides of the ball. “We moved the ball on offense,” he said. “We were

“I’m pretty happy with the start, but we’ll learn a lot about ourselves at Proviso East,” Perkins said late last week. “That’s a big one right off the bat with two ranked teams. Our conference should be tough this year.

You have three ranked teams in us, Proviso and Hinsdale South. It could be anybody’s conference.”

Perkins acknowledged the team has high hopes this season, given the vast amount of talent returning.

“We’ve talked about team goals,” he said. “We went 24-5 last year and won the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Martin Luther King tournaments and won a share of our conference.

We are looking to repeat all those things and hopefully make a run in the playoffs. We will see. We have to keep the momentum building and build good habits. If we do that we should be alright.”

Addison Trail wrestling team off to hot start Three Blazers wrestlers win first seven matches

The Addison Trail wrestling team went 2-1 at a recent quadrangular meet hosted by Glenbrook North.

The 2-1 mark upped the Blazers overall record to 5-2 on the young season.

“We’re having a good season,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Serio. “We’re young, but we’re pretty good.”

Addison Trail started the season with a 39-29 loss to Maine West in a meet where the team was shorthanded.

The Blazers came back to defeat

Palatine 66-10 and Highland Park 46-23 before opening West Suburban Conference Gold Division action with a 42-24 win over Morton.

At Glenbrook North, the Blazers downed Niles Notre Dame 50-15, lost to Conant 40-30 and defeated Glenbrook North by a 59-13 count.

“These kids are young,” said Serio. “We only have two seniors, but all these kids have experience. They all have been wrestling since they were a kid. It’s been a lot of fun. They listen. It’s so much easier coaching when you have kids who listen. And they are having a very good time.”

Serio has three wrestlers on the roster who got off to 7-0 starts individually.

Jake Matthews and sophomore Nick Skamra all had 7-0 records through late last week. Juarez wrestles at 106, while Matthews is at 132 and Skamra is at 195. Serio noted Matthews could also wrestle at 132.

Junior 145-pounder Brian Reyes is 6-1, as is senior 220-pounder Adal Sanabria.

“I knew we had a chance to be pretty good because of the amount of time these kids put in during the offseason,” said Serio. “I knew we could be pretty decent. These first couple of weeks, the kids have been wrestling hard and working hard and it’s paying off.”

Matthews, who has been written about previously in these pages for his youth wrestling successes, has fared well in his debut high-school season.

“Jake has wrestled some tough kids,” said Serio. “Jake is tough. He has wrestled a sectional qualifier already and scored a technical fall. All of his wins so far have been by tech fall or by pin—every kid.”

Serio noted Skamra has pinned every wrestler he’s faced and added that all seven of Juarez’s wins have been by sizable margins.

“Guillermo has beaten everybody pretty handily,” he said. “He was an All-American this off-season. He’s doing great.”

Serio expects another competitive season inside the WSC Gold.

“I wasn’t exactly sure what Morton would bring to the table,” he said.

“They are tough and well-coached, but a little younger. They had four or five returning guys so we didn’t know what to expect. I think we are right there in the conference, right in the hunt. Downers Grove South is good, Hinsdale South is decent and Willowbrook is good. Those always are good duals when we face those teams.”

Speaking of Willowbrook, Addison Trail heads to Villa Park tonight for the annual meet between District 88 neighbors.

“That should be another good one,” said Serio.

Fenton wrestlers off to another hot start

Bison start season 6-0; Team has won 37 regular-season duals in a row

The Fenton wrestling team had a banner 2016-2017 season, going 26-0 during the regular season before losing to second-ranked Crystal Lake Central in the dual-team sectional portion of the state tournament.

“We lost an outstanding group of seniors,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings.

And despite that graduation loss, the Bison keep rolling.

Fenton was off to a 6-0 start through late last week. The Bison scored victories over Niles West, Glenbrook

South, Hoffman Estates, Chicago Mather, Chicago Foreman and Elk Grove.

Through late last week, Fenton was the owner of a 37-match regular-season winning streak that dates back to the 2015-2016 season.

Senior 182-pounder Dylan Butts leads a cast of returning wrestlers.

Butts is a returning captain and state qualifier and is a two-time Fargo nationals qualifier. He got off to a 3-0 start with all three of his victories coming via pinfall.

Senior 145-pounder and fellow captain Carlos Mercado was off to a 3-1

start, while sophomore 132-pounder Danny Ramirez was 4-0.

Junior Ramiro Bracamontes (160 pounds) was 4-1 with four wins via pinfall. Sophomore Jeremy Piskorz was off to a 3-0 start at 126 pounds.

Four-year starter Isaiah Brock was 1-1 in the heavyweight division. Senior Jack Butts (195 pounds) was 3-1, while senior Jordan Carrasquillo was 3-0 at 220 pounds. Senior 138-pounder Brandon Koskiewicz was 2-1 at 138, while freshman David Burch was 3-1 at 120 pounds. Senior Mateo Valadez was 2-1 at 220. Senior Miguel Gonzales was 3-2 at 145, while

freshman Jonah Koskiewicz was 3-2 at 106 pounds.

Senior Anthony Park was expected to make his return this past weekend at 170 pounds.

Other key seniors include Danny Sotelo at 145, Jose Lopez at 138 and Alex Trevino at heavyweight.

Juniors Brandon Lopez (170), Fabian Calvillo (132), Jacob Jarmolinski (170) and Tony Galeana (170), along with sophomores Julian Giles (220), Marcel Rusiecki (285), Kevin Guevara (160), Filip Reduta (170) and Ricky Saucedo (182), plus freshmen Manny Lozada (113), Danny Sauce-

do (126) and Zach Gonzales (126), “are continuing to improve and will play a huge role with the success of the team,” said Hastings. “We’re led by an outstanding group of leaders mixed with a talented group of inexperienced wrestlers.”

Fenton has won the Metro Suburban Conference title eight of the last 10 years and have garnered the last five MSC titles in a row.

“As a team we anticipate competing well and being tough, while expecting to improve as much as any team we’ve had here in the last 11 years,” said Hastings.

Willowbrook wrestling team young, but talented

Warriors coming off 19-win campaign

The Willowbrook wrestling team is a mixture this season of individuals with varsity experience and talented newcomers.

The Warriors are coming off a 2016-2017 season where they went 19-11 overall and took 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

Willowbrook returns the likes of senior 182-pound standout Jack Jessen, who went 50-1 last year and took second in the state in Class 3A.

Also back is junior all-conference performer Richie Scheelk (126), who won 18 matches as a sophomore last year. Sophomore Zach Seymore (120) went 26-7 last year, while sophomore Tom Iozzo (145-152) won 18 contests. Senior Andrew Cuellar (113120) went 15-3 as a junior, as did senior 195-pounder Tyler Guerrero. Junior Matt Knundtson won 14 matches as a sophomore a year ago.

Key newcomers include the likes of senior Bernabe Vera (113), juniors Franshun Jordan (160) and Saad Omar (138), along with sophomores John Peterson (170), Wyatt Borri (152), Elkin Wells (126-132) and Alex Bernardino (195 pounds), as well as Jona-

“The team is very young, but talented,” said Willowbrook coach Brandon Murphy. “We will be a tough second-half team. With a lot of new faces in the lineup, there’s going to naturally be an adjustment period for many going up to the varsity.”

Murphy added the mental part of the game will be a key factor this season. “For the team to be successful each wrestler has to embrace their role, stay disciplined and keep developing throughout the season,” he said.

“They need to stay positive and know that success doesn’t come overnight or without hard work. I believe they will rise to the occasion and be suc-

cessful by season’s end.”

Murphy loves the potential his team has. “The team is full of potential,” he said. “I can’t wait to see the progression throughout the season.

The younger wrestlers have a perfect example right on their team of what it takes to be a successful wrestler on and off the matt with senior captain Jack Jessen at the helm. He’s going to Northwestern and leads by example on and off the mat. He shows what hard work and a full commitment to your goals can accomplish. Jack was a national champion this past summer and that couldn’t have been achieved without many hours of hard work and discipline.”

On a team full of sophomores that have some varsity experience, Murphy said to keep an eye out in particular for Seymore and Iozzo. “Both had a lot of varsity experience last season and are working on building off strong freshman seasons.”

Murphy said the WSC Gold portion of the schedule will be interesting. “The West Suburban Gold has been very competitive the last bunch of years with many different schools in the hunt for the title,” he said. “I believe this year will be very similar.

By the end of the season I expect every team to be close with one another.

It’s going to come down to a few key matchups.”

Timothy Christian boys basketball team opens new arena with win

“It was a good game in a great high-school environment,” said Timothy coach Scott Plasier, whose team moved to 4-1 with the win. “It was a good way to open the new gym up.”
