County announces COVID-19 test site winter operations plan Site at Villa Park’s Odeum to reopen

The DuPage County COVID-19 Drive-Thru Test Site will activate its Winter Operations Plan starting on Monday, Nov. 30. The plan will allow testing to be available for individuals through the winter months while maintaining safe conditions for staff and visitors.

The COVID-19 Drive-Thru Test Site location will remain at the DuPage County Complex; however, cars will be redirected to an enclosed, heated structure for testing. The enclosed structure will allow cars to safely drive through to receive COVID-19 testing. As a result, there will be a reduction of lanes which will impact the daily test capacity for the test site. However, other opportunities for community-based testing sites are available in DuPage County. More information can be found at dupagehealth.org/covid19testing.

“We understand the importance of continuing COVID-19 testing through the winter months,” said Karen Ayala, DuPage County Health Department Executive Director. “As COVID-19 cases continue to increase, the weather gets colder, and people spend more time indoors, we expect the already high demand of testing to persist. This modified plan for drive-thru testing, along with the various testing locations throughout the County, will provide the community access to testing while also keeping testing site staff and residents safe from the cold-weather elements.”

Youth group raises awareness about homelessness amidst COVID-19

More about homelessness in DuPage County “People don’t understand that there is homelessness in DuPage County,” Rogers said. “This changes how they will view homelessness and poverty.”

Now more than ever, Bridge Com-

munities is reaching out to the community in DuPage County. Wells said she is anticipating a rise in evictions and homelessness due to financial strains from COVID-19.

Bridge Communities is preparing for this amidst adjusting to COVID-19 regulations. Typically, mentors meet with families once a week for two years and help them transition out of homelessness, but that had to change.

“We had to pivot completely to virtual meetings,” Wells said. “We upgraded our technology and cleaning services and made classes online in a matter of weeks.”

On top of giving hands-on help to members of the community, Bridge Communities works to raise awareness about homelessness in the area. Events like Sleep Out Saturday help get people involved.

“It’s really important for young people to see it,” Wells said. “Families facing homelessness are often invisible. It manifests in a very different way for everyone.”

Rogers said raising awareness is a large part of why her youth group works with Bridge Communities.

“I feel like there’s such a stigma,” she said. “I always say, ‘The only thing we know about a homeless family is that they do not have a home.’”

Bridge Communities is grateful to the community for their support, Wells said. The outpouring of support for Sleep Out Saturday is uplifting, she said, despite the challenges and adjustments COVID-19 has presented.

“What hasn’t changed is our commitment to help and serve families,” Wells said. “We think it’s very important that we don’t forget our neighbors.”

A virtual sleepover throughout DuPage County is raising money for local nonprofit Bridge Communities. The organization’s annual Sleep Out Saturday event looked a little different this year, due to COVID-19, but the goal remained the same: to raise money and raise awareness. So far, the event has been very successful.

Typically, Sleep Out Saturday happens on one night, where families and groups meet for a rally and spend the night sleeping in parking lots. Along with raising awareness about homelessness, participants raise money by creating donation websites and soliciting.

However, with the threat of COVID-19, Sleep Out Saturday occurred virtually this year. On Nov. 7, participants slept in backyards, driveways and cars.

They met virtually for a presentation and asked for donations online.

The event opened for participation on Oct.9 and will continue until Dec. 5 to give everyone a chance to partake and donate.

Bridge Communities CEO Karen Wells said the event has already exceeded her expectations.

“People are still continuing to sleep out,” she said. “We have such an amazing community.”

Bridge Communities works to transition homeless families into self-sufficiency through programs, transitional housing and other services. Sleep Out Saturday is the organization’s oldest event, now celebrating its 17th year.

Wells said Sleep Out Saturday initially piqued her interest in Bridge Communities.

“I fell in love with the idea,” she said. “It’s an amazing opportunity for kids to learn about philanthropy.”

Bridge Communities encourages participants to make the night educational. One group in particular takes advantage of this opportunity.

The youth group at First United Methodist Church in Elmhurst has participated in Sleep Out Saturday for more than ten years.

Typically, the group makes it interactive. They are separated into groups to represent a “family.” They play educational games, earning money if they win. Then, each “family” walks to a grocery store and uses the money they earned to buy groceries, showing them how difficult it can be. The group then sleeps in boxes overnight.

The youth group’s leader, Lisa Rogers, said Sleep Out Saturday was very eye-opening for the group.

“They’re totally exhausted in the morning, but they’re going home to their own bed,” she said. “They learn a lot about poverty and how quick it can be. It’s really important for them to see how it could be anybody.”

This year, the youth group ran a virtual talent show to raise money for Bridge Communities, and slept outside in their own backyards.

The group includes students in grades 6-12. Rogers said it is important to educate young people about homelessness to reduce stigmas.

Hospital earns redesignation from Magnet for nursing excellence For the second time, Elmhurst Hospital has achieved designation as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Elmhurst Hospital, which employs nearly 1,000 nurses, was originally recognized as a Magnet hospital in 2015. Magnet is considered the highest honor a hospital can achieve for its nursing care.

With an audience of Elmhurst Hospital nurses, nursing leaders and senior executives listening via a conference call on Nov. 23, Jeanette Ives Erickson, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, Chair of the Commission for the Magnet Recognition Program, made the official announcement.

“It’s my absolute honor and privilege to officially notify you that the Commission on Magnet has unanimously voted to credential Elmhurst Memorial Hospital as a Magnet organization,” said Ives Erickson.

“This is a real accomplishment and a testament not only to your commitment to nursing excellence but also acknowledges the hard work everybody is doing on behalf of patients and families and keeping each other safe during these challenging times.”

Elmhurst Hospital was recognized by the ANCC with five exemplars in Exemplary Professional Practice for outperforming the benchmark and comparison cohort in Nurse Satisfaction, Ambulatory Falls with Injury,

Of the nation’s 6,100 hospitals, only 542 (about 9 percent) are designated as Magnet facilities by the ANCC. The rigorous Magnet recognition process culminated with a threeday virtual site visit, Sept. 23-25, in which surveyors reviewed all aspects of Elmhurst Hospital’s nursing care.

Elmhurst Hospital is part of Edward-Elmhurst Health, a system that includes Edward Hospital, which has been recognized as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence four times – 2005, 2010, 2014 and 2019.

Montini Catholic recognizes Lawrence Misialek for 20 years of service This year, Montini Catholic is recognizing teacher Lawrence Misialek, for his 20 years of service as an instructor in the Lasallian college preparatory high school’s Science Department. Dr. Misialek began his career at Montini in the fall of 2001 teaching AP Biology. He has since taught Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Anatomy & Physiology (a dual credit course sponsored by the College of DuPage).

Dr. Misialek, earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Lewis University in Romeoville. It was at the University of Illinois in Springfield where he received his Master’s degree and from there, he went on to earn his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard. He earned his teaching certification from Trinity International University in Deerfield.

Prior to Montini, he taught Visceral Anatomy at the University of Health Sciences, College of Dupage, Waubonsee Community College and Elgin Community College. He currently teaches (part time) at Waubonsee

“Understanding must precede learning,” said Misialek when asked about his teaching philosophy. “I believe students attend classes to gain understanding of the concepts of the course so that they can learn the course material more effectively.”

“Dr. Misialek is one of the smartest teachers I have ever had,” said senior Nicolas Fisch. “I have had him for both my Biology and Anatomy classes, and he’s always excited when we ask him questions that he never fails to help us answer. I love his hands-on approach to teaching as well as all of the labs we design in his class.”

Knowing that he has made a difference in the lives of his students is the aspect that he finds most rewarding as a teacher. He recalls a time when one of his Anatomy students, whose goal was to become a doctor, had been hospitalized for hydrocephalus (an abnormal buildup of fluid in the ventricles, or cavities, within the brain).

“He told me that the doctors who were treating him asked him what college he attended since he was able to converse with them using all of the correct terminology,” said Misialek.

“He told me they were astonished to find out he was just a senior in high school!”

Although the 2020 world of COVID-19 has presented a huge

challenge to teachers nationwide, Dr. Misialek has taken advantage of the situation by finding new ways to connect with his students who are learning from home.* “I have learned how to teach effectively in a flipped classroom environment,” he said. “It is a very different world, but we’re having very productive class sessions both in person and virtually.”

“Congratulations to Dr. Misialek on his twenty years at Montini!” said Principal Kevin Beirne. “There are those people in a school who make it an enjoyable place to be each day.

A new state-funded initiative called New Leaf Illinois aims to connect Illinoisans who want to remove marijuana arrests or convictions from their records with 20 nonprofit organizations that provide free legal representation and information on expungements.

New Leaf Illinois was launched Nov. 19 by the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation, an organization created by a 1999 state law to distribute funding appropriated by the government to support nonprofit legal aid programs and initiatives.

IEJF administers state appropriations to three programs—a broad legal aid grant program, a legal aid service for veterans, and, most recently, a marijuana offense expungement program.

As part of the 2019 Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act—the law that legalized marijuana for recreational use – arrests and convictions for certain marijuana offenses are eligible for expungement.

Arrests and minor offenses are eligible for automatic expungement, while some convictions require a petition be filed in court.

The 2019 law also set aside a portion of the tax revenue generated from the legal sale of marijuana that must be put toward the expungement process. Through the IEJF, a portion of these funds are given as grants to New Leaf organizations to provide legal services.

Tax revenue from legal marijuana sales has also been earmarked for other services, like the R3 community investment program.

According to Leslie Corbett, IEJF executive director, the organization received a $1.6 million appropriation to create the New Leaf initiative, with $1.46 million being distributed as grants to the 20 member organizations and the

remainder being used to administer the program.

IEJF estimates there are approximately 700,000 Illinoisans eligible for marijuana offense expungement, either through the automatic process or the court filing route.

Automatic expungement means the beneficiary doesn’t have to personally ask for expungement, but the process itself must still be carried out manually by the Illinois State Police and criminal justice officials on a case-by-case basis.

Due to the volume of records, ISP has set a 5-year timeline for when arrests and minor convictions will be expunged, in order of when the offense occurred. New Leaf Illinois offers to help applicants speed up the process if an arrest for a marijuana offense remains on their record.

Montini Catholic students express their feelings of gratitude Montini Catholic students were presented the opportunity to express their feelings of gratitude leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday. Despite what has turned out to be an unusual year of learning, students found

much to be grateful for. The tokens of gratitude are currently displayed in the Lasallian school’s main entry hall (outside the newly renovated Ed & Pam Mack Learning Resource Center).

Montini students wrote cards indicating what they are most grateful for during this Thanksgiving season. Cards read: “I am grateful for being able to come into school and feel a little bit of normal life;” “I am grateful for the fact that we are all one and connected like a family;” and, “I am grateful for my education because many aren’t fortunate enough to get one.”

And, 99% of the food grown this summer went to the Elmhurst Yorkfield Food Pantry.

“As a reference, try to visualize just 500 pounds of stacked sacks of flour or sugar on the shelves at the grocery store. How many aisles would that take up?”

Some projections show that by the end of the year, COVID-19 could cause more people to die each day from hunger than from virus infections, according to Happel. One in nine people in the U.S. use SNAP — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (also known as food stamps) — in 2019, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

What can you do about this? You can grow a garden. You have a few options and H&EG can help you do this. 1) Find a church, local organization, senior/retirement center and start a garden. 2) Find a plot at a local community garden and donate food to the food pantry. 3) Grow you own food. Teach your children. Grow to Give.

Rep. Mazzochi donates portion of salary on GivingTuesday Designates contribution to EWAN State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) has refused all legislative pay increases, and instead donated that salary to local charities each quarter. This quarter she is supporting the Elmhurst Walk-in Assistance Network, which provides emergency financial support, and other organizations that help local residents with food and rent.

“EWAN is one of many great local non-profits that does amazing work to help people stay on their feet when life throws them a curveball,” Rep. Mazzochi continued. “We here in 47th District are resilient, but sometimes even the strongest among us just needs a little help.”

Mazzochi encourages other community members who can to help out ahead of Giving Tuesday on December 1.

“Too many people in our communities are still experiencing upheaval on both the financial and health care side,” Rep. Mazzochi said. “We’re still in the midst of an economic slump in view of the Governor’s COVID-related orders; and we’re entering the holiday period, which will be tough for so many.”

Over the last two fiscal years, over the objections of Republicans, House Democrats have secured a pay raise for legislators, something Rep. Mazzochi called “even more deeply objectionable when so many are suffering because of COVID-related effects and economic shutdowns.” A recent jobs report showed 73,515 new jobless claims during the last week of October.

The previous week saw 53,138, meaning that Illinois had the second largest weekly increase in the nation and the largest total number of increased

claims. No other state saw an increase over 4,000, as opposed to Illinois’ nearly 10,000 claims.

Illinois lawmakers receive the fifth-highest base salary in the country and that number is set to increase every year, despite lawmaker performance or Illinois’ fiscal condition, because a 1990 law gives Illinois legislators an automatic pay raise every year tied to the cost of living. The General Assembly can vote on a bill to forgo this increase and the per diem and mileage reimbursement. Rep. Mazzochi has sponsored legislation every year to do just that, however the House Democrats refused to consider the legislation either this year or last year. Because the State of Illinois has refused to reduce the legislative paycheck, Mazzochi has donated it instead.

“While this year has been difficult for so many, there is still much to be thankful for and generosity to be shared. I encourage everyone to do what they can to support one another.

It doesn’t have to be financial assistance; you can cook a meal for your neighbor, connect with a senior who is struggling to cope with the necessary precautions of the pandemic, or do mental health checks on your friends.

We grow stronger as individuals when we reach out and help others,” Mazzochi reiterated.

GivingTuesday, which began in 2012, has developed into a global generosity movement to inspire people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. Every year it falls on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County

As of 8 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29, there were 43,445 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 729 deaths. Since Saturday, there were 887 new cases and 12 deaths related to COVID-19.

The DuPage Health Department advised that due to delays from IDPH, data may be incomplete.

And now for the good news Elmhurst Hospital reports that 40 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 were discharged as of Tuesday of last week. (Reports were only partially provided due to the holiday.) Since March 24, a total of 904 patients have been discharged.

— Ann Landers We met when we were 15, in driver’s training class. He caught my eye and I his. We’ve been best friends ever since. Somewhere along the way, best friendship turned into something more and before you can say, “I do,” we were married.

We were husband and wife for 33 years, best friends for 41. I wish it could have been more. And even though I almost always knew what he was thinking, I realize now I didn’t know his favorite song.

We grew up in the classic rock era and I know all of his favorite bands and many of his favorite songs, but not the one. Why didn’t I ever think to ask? I wish I’d asked. There are those little things that slip through the cracks. They don’t matter, really, but when it’s all said and done and you are looking back on what could have been, you wish you’d asked.

He had a brilliant mind but couldn’t find the ketchup in the fridge if someone had put it back on the “wrong” shelf. He shut the kitchen curtains.

I opened them. He made coffee for me every morning and brought a hot cupful up to our bedroom. He held my hand when we went for walks because he knew I liked it. Ditto goes for spooning in bed. He was never, ever hungry for power, although he had many opportunities to seize it.

He went on school field trips. He taxied our kids everywhere. He was a true family man. And that’s what he’d want to be remembered for — for the successful family he built. It is his legacy.

We talked about important things and nothings. We sat together in comfortable silence. We laughed a lot.

We had private jokes. We exchanged knowing looks often. We were each a half of the whole. Our love was strong. I never, ever doubted that.

In fact, I’ll be so bold as to say he adored me, as I did him. I didn’t deserve such a life-changing love, but I am forever grateful knowing it was bestowed on us. To be so loved, so adoringly, is a gift many people never receive. I had that for 41 years.

We were on vacation, looking for a winter retirement home, when he fell ill. The tragic nature of that will never be lost on me.

I’ve written about my husband before; he was always a good sport about it. I tried to portray him in a favorable (often humorous) light.

He was a light — the light of my

life. I never published his name because I didn’t think it was pertinent to readers or my message.

His name was Thom. He came up with the rather unusual spelling on his own when he was in kindergarten, telling his teacher, “The ‘H’ is silent.”

I always loved that about him. It shows his uniqueness, independence and creativity. He was one of a kind.

He was kind, a kind and gentle soul and sometimes this cruel and tempestuous world was too much for him, as it is for many of us. As it is often for me. Especially now, as I grieve this great loss.

I wasn’t sure of his favorite song, but at the end, when he was very ill, I played many of the classics for him bedside. The first one I picked was “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

When I asked my son today what he thought his dad’s favorite might be, that was the one he chose, so I think it’s likely a top contender. The lyrics talk about leaving and being remembered and flying free like a bird. This couldn’t be more fitting, especially since he’d talked about flying in his dreams.

His name was Thom. He loved me very much and I loved him. Still do.

Always will. He was a good man, a great man; in my eyes he was the best.

I hope those who knew and loved him always remember that. Enough said.

After Pfizer recently submitted its application for a COVID-19 vaccine to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Illinois public health officials have continued preparing locations to store and distribute the vaccine that could be released to frontline hospital workers in a matter of weeks.

Pfizer announced Nov. 20 that it planned to submit its COVID-19 vaccine application for emergency approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—a process that could take between two and four

weeks, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said during a daily news conference.

On Nov. 20, Ezike said she expects the state will receive about 400,000 doses of the vaccine in the first round of distribution.

“That is the number that we’re working with to identify how we will partition that out for the first phase,” she said.

“And we already know that we heard directly from General (Gustave) Perna that, as soon as FDA approval is granted, the next day they would start shipping out vaccines,”

she added.

Perna is the chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed, which is the Trump administration’s national program to develop, manufacture and distribute a COVID-19 vaccine.

Dr. Moncef Slaoui, Operation Warp Speed’s chief science adviser, reiterated this timeframe during a recent interview on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

Slaoui said vaccines would be shipped to states “within 24 hours from approval.”

“Hopefully, people will start to be immunized, I would say, within 48 hours from the approval,” Slaoui said during the interview.

Man gets 10 years for hijacking a car from Oak Brook Center On Wednesday, Nov. 25, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that a Florida man accused of robbing a woman of her car from the Oak Brook Mall in 2018 has been sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). Anthony Riola, 41, appeared in court after entering a blind plea of guilty on Oct. 30 to one count Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking (Class X Felony) in front of Judge George Bakalis, who handed down the sentence.

The state had asked for a sentence of 25 years in the IDOC. Riola has been in custody at the DuPage County Jail on a $500,000 with 10% to apply bond since his arrest.

On Dec. 29, 2018, at approximately 11:50 a.m., Riola approached a woman seated in her car in the Oak Brook Shopping Center parking lot and told her, “Give me your car.”

Riola also told the woman he had a knife and then brandished the weapon. After the woman fled her vehicle,

Riola entered the vehicle but was unable to start it, as he did not have the keys. Riola then left the vehicle and approached a valet parking attendant and entered a running vehicle while the valet attendant and owner of the vehicle stood nearby. Riola then drove away in the vehicle. An investigation by the Oak Brook Police Department led to Riola who was apprehended in Chicago later that day.

“While holiday shopping this year will undoubtedly be different from years past, I want to remind the public to remain alert this holiday season,” Berlin said. “I also want to assure DuPage County residents that our local police departments and my office will continue to do everything within our powers to ensure that residents will not have to worry about their personal safety while out shopping or otherwise enjoying the holidays.”

Riola will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Fenton distributes free coats to students in need

Just in time for our first snow of the winter, Mr. Kambic was at school Monday scheduling pick-ups and deliveries of free coats that were purchased by the Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary for Fenton students in need.

The brand-new coats were purchased through Operation Warm at an average bulk price of $20 per coat.

Rotary team members then sorted the purchased coats into plastic bags per family and stored them in quarantine for several days before transferring to the schools and libraries that made requests. This process replaced the annual in-person December coat drive.

We’re not really going to see, as I understand, the vaccine coming to the general public until perhaps March or April at the earliest.”

Ezike said the hospital workers set to receive the vaccine in the first rounds include staff who are not health care professionals, such as the cleaning and food staff.

“A lot of those people in those jobs are our Black and brown com-

munities and so we are going to make sure that they are included in that first phase 1a,” she said.

Essential workers outside of hospitals and at-risk individuals, including people 65 years of age and older, will be next in line to receive the vaccine in the first phase of distribution when limited doses are available, according to the vaccination planning guide.

Ezike said the initial doses of the vaccine will be distributed through hospitals in each of the 11 regions of the state.

State public health officials are also identifying freezer storage locations, since Pfizer’s vaccine must be kept at 94 degrees below zero.

Bond set for man accused of illegal possession of loaded gun, fleeing police On Monday, Nov. 23, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Hinsdale Chief of Police Brian King announced that bond has been set for a Chicago man accused of illegally possessing a fully loaded firearm and fleeing from the police.

James Ruffin, 27, of Chicago, appeared at a bond hearing, where Judge George Bakalis set bond at $50,000 with 10% to apply. In all, Ruffin has been charged with one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 3 Felony), one count

of Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding (Class 3 Felony), one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony) and two counts of Misdemeanor DUI. On Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, at approximately 1:10 a.m., a Hinsdale police officer observed a vehicle stopped in the through lanes of traffic on westbound Ogden Avenue. The officer pulled behind the stopped vehicle, exited his patrol car and approached the stopped car on foot. It is alleged that at this time, the driver, later identified

DuPage County approves FY2021 Budget The DuPage County Board on Tuesday approved its Fiscal Year 2021 budget, which includes a balanced, $483.3 million spending plan.

The FY 2021 spending plan increased funding for public safety. The State’s Attorney’s Office received additional allocations to support for three special prosecution units and increased resources for investigations and trial preparation. The Sheriff’s Office will receive funding for ongoing training programs focusing on de-escalation techniques and policing in a diverse society.

The County will also continue the fight against COVID-19 using federal funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The County has set aside $16.8 million to support public health initiatives including DuPage County Health Department COVID testing sites, contact tracing, purchases of personal protective equipment, and preparations for a mass vaccination program.

“From the outset, public safety and public health have been my highest priority for this budget, and we are focused on our commitment to keep our residents safe,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

The total budget for DuPage County is $483.3 million, with a General Revenue Fund of $179.4 million and a $69 million property tax levy, which represents a slight increase to capture new construction in the county being added to the property tax rolls. The property tax rate remains flat and the average DuPage County homeowner will not see an increase in their property tax bill.

The 2021 Fiscal Year begins on Dec. 1, 2020. DuPage County is AAA bond rated. The County’s latest reported unemployment rate was 8.2 percent for the month of September.
