Police report finding designer accessories, $96,000 cash

On Monday, Nov. 22, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and R. Sean Fitzgerald, acting special agent in charge for HSI Chicago, announced that a woman indicted by a DuPage County Grand Jury for allegedly fencing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of counterfeit high-end purses, wallets, handbags and other commodities had entered a plea of not guilty to four counts of Felony Possession of Counterfeit Items With Intent to Sell.

The most serious charge is a Class 1, non-probationable, Felony.

Angelina Luy, 40, of Glendale Heights, was arraigned, where she formally entered her plea in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

On Monday, Nov. 1, Luy was arrested and charged following the execution of a search warrant by federal and local authorities. She appeared in Bond Court the following day where bond was set at $40,000. On Thursday, Nov. 11, a DuPage County Grand Jury indicted Luy. On Thursday, Oct. 24, United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at O’Hare International Airport took possession of two inbound parcels from Cambodia, allegedly addressed to Luy at her residence in Glendale Heights.

The declared value of the parcels was $374. CBP officers searched

the parcels and allegedly found various belts, handbags, purses, wallets, and apparel bearing trademarks registered to Chanel, Christian Dior, Fendi, Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Moschino, and Versace. The goods were determined to be counterfeit and had an approximate retail value of $140,176.

On Monday, Nov. 1, United States Homeland Security Investigations obtained an anticipatory search warrant for the two parcels from Cambodia allegedly addressed to the defendant. The search warrant was executed at approximately 6:30 p.m., after the parcels were allegedly brought inside Luy’s residence. Following execution of the search warrant, authorities allegedly found hundreds of counterfeit items bearing trademarks registered to Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Piaget and Versace as well as more than $96,000 in cash.

Luy was taken into custody at this time. It is alleged that Ms. Luy has been receiving and selling counterfeit merchandise since January 2021, and that the retail value of the merchandise is more than $500,000.

Luy’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2022, for status. Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Secretary of State Jesse White announced that Secretary of State Police will be conducting parking stings at shopping malls statewide throughout the holiday season and ticketing individuals who illegally park in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities.

“Our mission is not to issue tickets, but to ensure that accessible parking spaces are available to those who need them,” said White.

“Parking illegally in a space reserved for people with disabilities means a possible driver’s license suspension and a hefty fine, money which could otherwise be used on gifts. Remember, if you don’t belong there, don’t park there.”

Repeat violators will face a one-year driver’s license suspension and a $750 fine for a second offense; for third or subsequent offenses, violators will face a $1,000 fine plus a oneyear driver’s license revocation. The fine for parking in an accessible parking space without a disability placard or disability license plates can be up to $350. Using a deceased person’s placard or a fraudulent placard can result in a $2,500 fine and one-year revocation of a driver’s license.

Currently, there are 530,498 permanent placards, 34,965 meter-exempt placards, 50,721 disability plates and 6,944 disabled veteran plates registered in Illinois.

Park Place welcomes new TC school liaisons Intergenerational program brings students, seniors together

Since Park Place opened nearly 10 years ago, the facility has been fortunate to have a robust collaboration with the teachers and students at Timothy Christian Schools.

Their award- winning intergenerational program has been a delight to everyone who has been involved over the years.

Mary and Joy began by coordinating a new event: a Park Place Welcome Back to School Reception during teacher orientation week at Timothy Christian. All the teachers were invited to get a look at Park

Place and meet the residents. Resident ambassadors offered tours, and the teachers left with iced coffee and cookies.

As usual, the program enjoyed an adapted-for-safety version of the annual pasta dinner with the Timothy Christian boys soccer team. This year’s dinner was dedicated to Park Place resident Jack Cashman, who passed away in January. Cashman was the “founding father” of the Park Place Booster Club that supported the intergener-

ational program.

After the students sang the Timothy Christian School fight song, they left with to-go pasta dinners.

Mary and Joy continue to host a meet-and-greet monthly in the Park Place Bistro and have been active in engaging with residents and finding ways to connect students and residents. Park Place is grateful for Mary and Joy, and they anticipate many more years of engaging intergenerational programs ahead.

Jim Segredo celebrates 25 years at Montini Catholic Boasts 45 years in Catholic education

It was in 1997 when Jim Segredo, Vice President at St. Rita High School at the time, “got the bug” to become a school principal. He saw an ad in the Chicago Tribune, sent his resume to a Lombard post office box - and the rest is history!

Twenty-five years later, Jim Segredo is celebrating his monumental time at Montini Catholic and 45 years in Catholic education.

Jim’s aspirations were set on attending law school initially.

“After graduating from Lewis University I was accepted to John Marshall Law School and was planning on starting law school in late September of 1977,” he said. “I did get a BA in Social Studies as well, along with my teaching certificate, in case law school didn’t work out.

I had many terrific teachers and coaches as role models in grade school, high school and college so becoming a teacher was something that I was also interested in.”

It was a call from Dr. Don Racky, Jr., Chair of St. Rita’s English Department, that set him on the path towards teaching.

“Don asked if I would be interested in a summer school Social Studies teaching position. I taught U.S. History and World History for two months and really enjoyed the experience.”

While preparing to enter law school, he got another call - and an offer of a teaching position at St. Rita for the 77-78 school year. He took the offer with plans to attend law school in the evening.

“I had to agree to coach soccer and track, about which I knew nothing at the time!” he laughed.

“As was the case with my summer school teaching experience, I really enjoyed my first two weeks of teaching and coaching and being part of the St. Rita community - so when it was time to start law school, I decided to postpone it for a year and concentrate on teaching.”

During his second year of teaching, however, Jim found himself even more involved with the school and his enthusiasm never dimmed.

In 1981 he made the decision to pursue a career in education and got his Masters in Education at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

“Law school still beckons me,” he said. “My dad (God rest his soul), for many years, would always ask me - ‘so, when are you going to law school?’”

Answering the ad in 1997 for a Western Suburban Catholic High School seeking a principal, Jim was not aware of which school he was applying to.

“After about a week, I received a call from Brother Thomas Harding and that is when I knew it was Montini Catholic. Brother Tom used to work at De La Salle in Chicago so we knew each other from Archdiocese of Chicago and Catholic League events.”

When the position was offered, Jim found himself a little reluctant.

would be to leave St. Rita after 20 years as a graduate, teacher and administrator. As principal of Montini, Jim was determined to reduce class size by

adding more teachers to the faculty. He also increased class time by six minutes and increased graduation requirements, adding three years of Science and two years of World Language. He added more AP classes to the curriculum, established the Signum Fidei Program and brought the Kairos Retreat program to Montini. He also began Montini Catholic’s now 25year tradition of hosting a Golden Gobbler Thanksgiving Food Drive every November. (See related story about this year’s event elsewhere in this issue.)

The two biggest challenges of becoming principal at Montini, according to Jim, were learning its culture and leading a coed school.

“I am very grateful to Kathy Filipiak and Maryann O’Neill, my two assistant principals. They were great partners in helping navigate these and other challenges in my early years as principal.”

Under Jim’s leadership, Montini’s Campus Ministry and Technology programs flourished with the hiring of Mike Blanchette and Pete Farina ‘87. Maryann O’Neill was appointed Assistant Principal and Mike Bukovsky was moved to the Admissions Office to work with Kim (Caffarelli) Richmond ‘81 - growing Montini’s enrollment significantly in the process (almost 20% in four years). ‘Dr. K’ - Mike Kisicki was also brought on board as a member of the faculty.

While principal, Jim also facili-

tated the opening of Montini’s 300 Wing and the Field House.

“There have been so many great memories as principal over the years that it’s hard to choose. It was great announcing a free day for the student body in celebration of our first IHSA State Championship (Wrestling, 2000). I also got to experience our first Football Championship in 2004 - the school spirit and enthusiasm was truly unforgettable. After we won, the ‘Montini Nation’ took over the hospitality tent area at the University of Illinois - there was a sea of maroon and gold everywhere - all super excited for Montini and Coach A.” Jim was also witness to Montini’s first baseball team going to State (finishing third) under head coach Bill Leeberg.

“Another great memory for me is going to cheer on our Broncettes at state and handing out chocolate roses to the team. It’s a tradition I began when I was principal and I haven’t missed a year since!”

Jim is very honored to have been a part Montini’s first graduation ceremony in the Field House as well. He will also never forget the day Student Council President Mac Brandt and Class of 1998 peers Mike Allegretti, Brian Dobry and Mike Modjeski brought a live turkey (in a cage) to school to turn it for the Golden Gobbler Food Drive.

Jury finds former Chicago man guilty of first-degree murder well-being check, officers with the Woodridge Police Department discovered the deceased body of Cecily Dickey in her apartment.

She had been repeatedly stabbed and choked.

An investigation into the murder led authorities to Luckett who was already in custody after he was arrested by Cook County authorities on unrelated charges several days after the murder.

An investigation into the murder conducted by the Woodridge Police Department found that on the evening of Oct. 16, 2015, Dickey drove to Chicago, picked up Luckett and brought him back to her apartment.

At approximately 3 a.m. the following morning, a verbal argument ensued between Dickey and Luckett.

As the argument turned physical in nature, Dickey ran to the bathroom in an attempt to get away from Luckett.

Luckett chased after Dickey and stabbed her in the stomach.

Dickey then ran out of the bathroom at which time Luckett grabbed her, knocked her to the

floor, continued to stab her and choked her as well.

Following the murder, Luckett stole Dickey’s cellular phone, debit card and car and fled the scene.

An autopsy concluded the cause of Dickey’s death was multiple stab wounds.

On Dec. 16, 2015, Luckett appeared in Bond Court where he was ordered to be held without bond.

Democrats deny racial gerrymandering in legislative maps

Lawyers for the General Assembly’s Democratic leaders filed documents in federal court last week, denying that newly drawn state legislative district maps amount to racial gerrymandering—instead accusing the plaintiffs in the three lawsuits of trying to use race to redraw districts for their own purposes.

The filings are the Democrats’ response to proposed changes in the district maps submitted recently by Republican leaders, a Latino advocacy group in Chicago and Black civil rights groups in the Metro East region.

A three-judge federal court panel in Chicago is scheduled to hear oral arguments in the three separate cases starting Tuesday, Dec. 7.

The new maps will determine how communities across the state are represented in the General Assembly in Springfield for the next 10 years.

Due in large part to the pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau did not release official, detailed numbers from the 2020 census until mid-August.

Lawmakers then called a special session to adjust the initial maps they had approved in the spring—maps that were based on population estimates from survey data—and passed a new set of maps Aug. 31. Pritzker signed them into law Sept. 24.

Among other things, the census numbers showed Illinois had lost population overall since the 2010 census.

But there had been a substantial increase in the state’s Latino population while Black and white populations both declined.

In separate suits, Republican leaders and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, or MALDEF, both argued that despite the growth in the Latino population, the new maps actually reduce the number of districts in which Latinos make up a majority, or a large plurality, of the voting age population.

They argued that violates both the U.S. Constitution and the federal

Voting Rights Act of 1965.

In another suit, the East St. Louis Branch of the NAACP, along with the NAACP’s state chapter and the United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations, argued that in the Metro East area, concentrated areas of Black voters were split into three separate House districts solely for the purpose of protecting white Democratic incumbents.

All three suits name Senate President Don Harmon, of Oak Park, House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, of Hillside, and the Illinois State Board of Elections as defendants.

In their court filing, however, lawyers for the Democratic leaders denied any constitutional or legal violation.

“The September Redistricting Plan ... protects minority voting strength and provides Hispanic and Black voters more than an equal opportunity to elect candidates of their choice,” their brief states. “The three plaintiffs have failed to provide evidence to support otherwise and have not demonstrated that the September Redistricting Plan violates the Voting Rights Act or the U.S. Constitution.”

Earlier last month, the three sets of plaintiffs submitted their proposed revisions to the maps. MALDEF proposed changes in the Chicago area that would create 10 largely-Latino districts in the Chicago area, while Republicans proposed creating an 11th Latino district in Aurora.

The NAACP plaintiffs and the Republicans both proposed redrawing the Metro East region to create a largely-Black House district in East St. Louis.

In their response, however, the Democratic leaders argue that none of those proposals overlap with each other and that each would have ripple effects that would affect neighboring districts that have not been contested.

“In other words, plaintiffs have proposed three competing remedial plans, with no proposal for reconciling the differences,” attorneys for the Democrats wrote.

He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

“A jury found Launden Luckett responsible for the brutal murder of Cecily Dickey,” Berlin said.

“While their verdict cannot bring Cecily back to those who loved her, perhaps their finding will provide some measure of justice knowing the man responsible for her murder will face severe consequences for his actions.”

Two men charged with carjacking elderly couple at gunpoint in Willowbrook

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Willowbrook Chief of Police Robert Schaller have announced that two men presently in custody in Indiana on unrelated charges have been charged with carjacking an elderly couple’s 2021 BMW 840i at gunpoint from a Willowbrook gas station.

Kevin Sanders, 22, of West Lafayette and Antonio Davis, 20, of Chicago, have both been charged in the incident. Both men are facing charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking (Class X felony), aggravated battery (Class 3 felony) and theft (Class 3 felony).

Sanders has also been charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon (Class 3 felony) while Davis is facing additional charges of armed robbery with a firearm (Class X felony), aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon (Class 1 felony) and two counts of robbery (Class 1 and Class 2 felony).

On July 15, at approximately 2:47 p.m., the couple stopped at the Citgo Gas Station, located at 6900 Kingery Highway in Willowbrook.

The female victim entered the store and upon her return to her vehicle, it is alleged that two individuals, later identified as Davis and Sanders, exited the rear doors of a stolen Dodge Durango and approached the couple’s BMW with each defendant going towards the opposite sides of the victims’ car.

It is alleged that Sanders approached the passenger side of the vehicle carrying a long gun and that he shoved the female victim away from the vehicle causing bruising to her body. It is alleged that at the same time, Davis approached the driver’s side of the BMW, pointed a firearm at the male victim’s head and ordered him out of the vehicle.

White House signs the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi On Nov. 15, I had the honor of joining President Biden at the White House as he signed the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law surrounded by both Democrats and Republicans.

This infrastructure bill makes crucial investments in our country, our economy, and our state. It will help repair the bridges in our district that are currently classified as structurally deficient while expanding broadband access to many of the 228,000 Illinoisians who currently don’t have it.

The new law will also invest in our drinking water, public transit, and electric vehicles. Our country is getting a long-awaited infrastructure upgrade because of this law, and I was honored to support it.

I’m also proud that the infrastructure package includes the States Afforded Funding Extensions to Oppose Driving Recklessly in Vehicular Engagements (SAFE TO DRIVE) Act, which I authored with colleagues in the House and Senate. Distracted driving— driving while also trying to text, call, clean, eat, or any other activity—killed over 3,000 people in 2019.

My SAFE TO DRIVE Act ensures that more states can qualify to receive grants if they implement laws banning all non-navigational mobile device viewing while driving.

House passes Build Back Better Act Recently, I voted yes on the Build Back Better Act, which will help American families as we recover from the pandemic, combat inflation and turn to the opportunities ahead. This bill will cut childcare expenses in half for most families, which will not only reduce that financial burden, but also allow many Americans who left the workforce during the pandemic to return to work. To

combat climate change, we have included the largest investments in clean energy and green technology in American history, creating jobs while we cut emissions.

In this bill, we also increased access to quality, affordable health care by lowering Affordable Care Act premiums, capping insulin prices and out-of-pocket costs for seniors for prescription drugs, and allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices.

The Build Back Better Act also increases the cap on the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction, so that Illinoisians are not double paying on taxes.

My Select Subcommittee on COVID hearing in Chicago on vaccines Last month, I presided over a hearing of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis in Chicago on the topic of vaccine distribution and building vaccine confidence among the population. I was honored to welcome Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, as witnesses in our panel discussion, as well as other public health officials and community leaders.

Nationwide, more than 20 percent of all adults and children over the age 12 have not yet received even one dose of vaccine.

Without the vaccine, people are six times more likely to get coronavirus.

During our hearing, we noted the importance of hyper-local efforts to increase vaccine confidence and access, and this includes the importance of trusted community leaders who can fight misinformation campaigns.

I presided over this hearing to shed light on the work that our Chicago leaders have been doing to vaccinate our communities and to learn about the best practices in continuing this effort to vaccine the country and end this pandemic.

By John T. Shaw Those in government rarely have time to extract themselves from the relentless rush of daily drama and urgent deadlines to think about the future.

Former North Carolina Gov. Terry Sanford once observed there is no one in the governor’s office looking out the window, pondering the problems of the future. Former Congressman Lee Hamilton of Indiana made the same point, writing that members of Congress “never have time to put their feet up on their desks, look out the window, and think about long-term challenges coming at us down the road.”

The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute welcomes the challenge to help Illinois—and Illinoisans— prepare for what’s ahead with our Future of Illinois Project. We are guided by the instructions that thenU.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson gave to his new Policy and Planning staff in 1948 when he told them to “look ahead, not into the distant future, but beyond the visions of the operating officers caught in the smoke and crises of current battles: far enough ahead to see the emerging form of things to come and outline what should be done to meet or anticipate them.”

The institute looks forward to convening leading demographers, historians, political scientists, futurists, philanthropists and business leaders to peer out over the horizon and assess fundamental challenges facing Illinois over the next three decades—from now until 2050.

We are preparing two portions of the Future of Illinois Project for next year, which is the institute’s 25th anniversary year.

In the first part, the institute invites Illinoisans to submit essays of between 1,000 and 5,000 words that outline the state’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and offer a specific action agenda for the state.

We are sending invitations to submit essays to Illinois constitutional officers, members of the General Assembly, mayors, academics, business and labor leaders and philanthropists. We also very much want to receive essays from residents who represent the diversity of our state, including community organizers, parents, artists and students.

The institute will compile these responses and publish a “State of Illinois Report” in the summer of 2022. This report will also include a clear and vivid demographic portrayal of Illinois based on the 2020 U.S. Census.

The premise of this portion of the project is that looking to the future first requires that we take stock of where we are now. Abraham Lincoln put it perfectly and precisely: “If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could better judge what to do and how to

do it.”

The second part will be to convene a conference in the fall of 2022 based on the responses we receive and the central themes that are evident in the essays. The exact structure and agenda of the meeting will be determined later, as will subsequent conferences that consider such issues as the budget, health care, education, criminal justice and transportation.

The Future of Illinois Project will also catalogue reports and studies about Illinois generated in the past decade or so, serving as a clearinghouse for researchers and practitioners and helping establish what we know and what we need to know about Illinois. For example, we will track down and assemble reports from the Census Bureau, Illinois Board of Higher Education, Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Civic Federation, Commercial Club of Chicago, Rural Illinois Summit, Chicago Metropolitan Planning Council, and Forefront’s “Giving in Illinois” and “Illinois Transfer of Wealth” studies.

Cynthia A. Ibeling, 67 Cynthia A. Ibeling nee Weldon, age 67, of Lombard, formerly Addison, died November 22, 2021. She was the loving mother of Tamara (Daniel) Kenning nee Harrell, of Hebron Indiana and Tracy Ibeling of Addison; loving Gramma of Sean, Ryan and Nolan; dearest sister of Janice (James) Harrell of Greenville, South Carolina; dear aunt of Julie Gawel of South Carolina and Justin (Christina) Harrell of South Carolina; and great aunt of six. Cindy was a lifelong resident of Addison and Lombard. She grew up in Addison and was a 1972 graduate of Addison Trail High School.

Cindy was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Addison and had been a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Lombard since 1981. She was the supervisor of After Care at St. John’s Church and School in Lombard and also worked hot lunch there. Cindy was a seamstress for Itasca Draperies and Yardstick, and also ran her own business as a seamstress. She was an artist, guitar player. She loved to fish. Cindy dearly loved her children, grandsons, and church family.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Lombard. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Gardens West, Oakbrook Terrace.

Montini Catholic’s Golden Gobbler celebrates 25 years Alumni recall earlier years of food drive In the fall of 1997, under the leadership of then-principal Jim Segredo (now president), Montini Catholic kicked off its first Golden Gobbler Thanksgiving Food Drive. Since then, every year when the air turns crisp, clocks get set back and Bronco sports fans bid adieu to their fall rivalries, Montini students gear up for their annual food collection. This year marked the beginning of Montini’s 25th ‘Season of Giving’ with the onset of Golden Gobbler and Adopt-a-Family.

This year’s Gobbler kicked off on Monday, Nov. 15 and included a week-long giving campaign leading up to Thanksgiving. This year, there is a friendly competition between students and Montini alumni who have been asked to get involved by ‘competing’ and contributing grocery store gift cards. Contests between classes help fuel the drive to donate ‘just one

more item’ to the stockpile.

But, it’s the students and their own desire to give to those in need who truly power the food drive each year, according to Campus Minister Mike Blanchette.

“Golden Gobbler has always been a good experience for our students,” Blanchette said. “When they help deliver the donations to our ‘adopted’ families, they get to see the joy on the faces of the children we have helped. They realize the true meaning of Thanksgiving by participating in Golden Gobbler. It offers us all an opportunity to reflect on our blessings in our lives and to share them with others in need.

Blanchette said the effort primarily supports the food pantries at Christ the King, St. Pius X and Woodridge.

Miller, however, has indicated she might run in the newly-drawn 15th District, which stretches from west-central Illinois eastward across the state, curling around the city of Champaign and stretching back west and south to an area just west of Collinsville.

It also creates a new 13th District stretching from the Metro East region across a narrow strip of land through Springfield and Decatur, to Champaign.

In the Chicago metropolitan area, the maps create a new largely-Latino 3rd District that currently has no incumbent while also putting Democratic Rep. Marie Newman’s residence in the same district as fellow-Democratic Rep. Jesús “Chuy” Garcia.

Newman, however, has indicated she intends to run in the new 6th District where she would face Democrat-

Gov. JB Pritzker last week signed legislation redrawing the state’s congressional district maps, saying they reflect Illinois’ diversity and preserve minority representation.

“These maps align with the landmark Voting Rights Act and will ensure all communities are equitably represented in our congressional delegation,” Pritzker said in a statement.

Due to the state’s declining population, Illinois will have only 17 congressional seats after the 2022 elections, one fewer than it currently has.

Because most of the state’s population loss occurred in southern Illinois, the new maps combine what are currently the 12th and 15th Districts, held by Republican Reps. Mike Bost and Mary Miller, respectively, into a new 12th District that covers most of the southern one-third of the state.

Elsewhere, the new maps link Rockford, the Quad Cities, Galesburg, Macomb and Bloomington into one large C-shaped district.

Analysts at the Princeton Gerrymandering Project gave the new maps an overall grade of F in the categories of partisan fairness, competitiveness and compactness. They estimate the maps create 14 likely Democratic districts and three likely Republican districts.

The Illinois delegation is currently split between 13 Democrats and five Republicans.

The political reform advocacy group CHANGE Illinois, which has advocated for an independent redistricting commission, also harshly criticized the new maps, saying it was designed to produce “predetermined winners and losers in nearly all 17 districts.”

“The map is undemocratic and leaves all voters without choices, undermining the very elections that are supposed to allow voters to hold officials accountable,” the organization said in a statement.

Pritzker, however, said the maps align with the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits practices and procedures that discriminate on the basis of race, color or membership in a recognized language minority.

He said they also align with the Illinois Voting Rights Act, which requires redistricting plans to preserve clusters of minority voting groups that are large enough and cohesive enough to exert collective electoral power.

Pritzker’s signing of the congressional maps comes less than three weeks before a three-judge federal court panel will hear oral arguments in three separate lawsuits challenging

the new legislative maps that Democrats pushed through in August and Pritzker signed into law in September.

Plaintiffs in those suits include Republican leaders in the General Assembly; a group of Latino voters in the Chicago area represented by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, or MALDEF; and a group of civil rights organizations that include the East St. Louis Branch of the NAACP, the Illinois State Conference of the NAACP and the United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations, or UCCRO. Those plaintiffs allege the new legislative maps reduce minority representation by breaking up Latino communities in the Chicago area and Black communities in the Metro East region.

Arguments in those cases are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Why you may see more coyotes in the winter DuPage County residents might see more coyotes between now and February as young coyotes leave their parents in search of mates and territories to call their own, according to the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.

“Young coyotes are looking for a place to call home, yet most areas are already occupied. This forces them to move around in search of unclaimed territories,” said Forest Preserve District ecologist Dan Thompson. “As a result, sightings tend to increase at this time of year.”

People may also see coyotes more frequently in winter because there’s less vegetation, which means the

animals have fewer places to hide.

Snow on the ground makes them easier to spot, too. Coyotes are also more active because they have to spend more time foraging for food.

A rise in sightings doesn’t necessarily mean a rise in the county’s coyote population, though.

Still, because of this seasonal increase in activity, people with pets should be especially vigilant.

“Follow forest preserve regulations and keep your pet leashed when you’re in a preserve,” Thompson said. “It’s smart to stay with your dog and keep it on a leash in your backyard, too. It’s uncommon, but coyotes can target dogs, not nec-

“Coyotes are smart animals that adapt quickly to changes in their environment and can learn new behaviors based on our activities,”

The Willowbrook girls basketball team earned four straight victories to win the championship of its own five-team, round-robin Thanksgiving invitational. The Warriors completed the invitational with last week’s 70-43 win over East Aurora. Senior Sophie Sullivan (above - No. 1) and freshman Hannah Kenny (right - No. 10), who are pictured during Willowbrook’s Nov. 20 win over Plainfield East, were named to the invitational’s all-tournament first team. The Warriors improved their overall record to 5-0 with their four wins at the invitational. Willowbrook began its season with a win over Bartlett. The Warriors beat Montini, Plainfield East, Lockport and East Aurora during the holiday invitational. The food drive is collecting non-perishable food items and household necessities, which will be delivered to local food pantries on Saturday, Dec. 18.
