Unfunded pension liability in Illinois now $111 billion

According to a legislative report released on Thursday Dec. 10 by the General Assembly’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, Illinois’ unfunded pension liability is reportedly $111 billion at the present time. Legislative leaders have agreed to join Gov. Bruce Rauner next week to take another look at overhauling Illinois’ pensions.

A previous plan was presented that lawmakers claim would have saved the state billions in contributions, but that plan was rejected by the Illinois Supreme Court, according to a report from Springfield.

State leaders met last week about the issue while Illinois continues to function with out a budget for the fiscal year which began in July, 2015. The Springfield State Journal Register reported that the pension contributions was to increase by $291 million in the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Hospital hosts annual Love Lights reception, tree-lighting

Above: On the evening of December 4, Elmhurst Hospital held its annual Love Lights reception, where the switch was thrown on the lights along the promenade leading up to the main entrance of the building. It was a beautiful sight, followed by a reception with coffee and pastries, where the hospital’s trained therapy dogs and their handlers were among the VIP guests.

A bounty of twinkling lights sprinkled along the promenade at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital on the evening of Friday, December 4, when the switch was thrown and the trees were lit to indicate the holiday season’s official opening.

Hospital President & CEO Mary Lou Mastro spoke to the crowd gathered at the hospital’s main entrance to witness the event, before retiring inside the lobby for a reception to celebrate the Love Lights program.

Members of the community are invited to purchase an ornament to commemorate a person in their lives who passed away. The names of the honored people go onto a list that remains at the hospital throughout the season.

Special VIP “guests” included three therapy dogs who remained close to the side of their handlers throughout the evening, even while indoors where guests enjoyed coffee and pastries. The dogs were not only beautiful to look at, but also demonstrated the discipline learned in their special training to be therapy dogs. The dogs will eventually be assigned to help patients who have certain disabilities.

y husband and I were just retired in 1981 and we got involved in a trip to Italy with a group from our parish at the Catholic Church in North Riverside. The parish is Mater Christi and many of the folks who were going on the trip were dear friends. We had several meetings before the trip and were excited to be going on a wonderful trip.

We boarded our plane, Il Italia, on a Saturday afternoon and enjoyed some cocktails and food as we flew over the Atlantic.

Tried to sleep because we knew we would be landing outside Rome early in the morning on Sunday and we would start our new journey full speed ahead, once we were on the ground.

in Rome and went through customs, we were greeted at this busy airport by a man named Carlos carrying a placard on a small pole, which said “Mater

Christi.” It turned out this wonderful gentleman would be our guide for the next two weeks.

Early on, he informed us that he was not an Italian but that he was a Roman.

We soon were on our way to our hotel and looking forward to some rest but as luck would have it, a priest friend from home was studying in Rome at the North American College and he invited us for Mass and cocktails. What a wonderful start!

The next three days we spent being real tourists, seeing all the many ruins and castles and fountains, and gardens, and so forth.

We then were really ready to go to the Vatican and see the Pope, this being the highlight of our whole tour.

It was Sunday and a bright sunny day and we were in a festive mood. The crowd was large and the sun was shining so

the gathering was in St. Peter’s Square. There were people from all over the world and they were singing their national songs or old folk songs from their individual countries. The mood and atmosphere was up-lifting, warm and friendly.

Then to everyone’s delight the Pope arrived in his Popemobile, which at that time was no more than a golf cart, very open and you could almost touch the dear man. My husband commented that it didn’t seem safe but I thought it was just fine.

As the Pope passed us and was about 50 feet away we heard what we thought was fireworks, but turned out to be gunshots.

Yes, someone had tried to assassinate our blessed Pope. The pigeons that are out and about in St. Peter’s Square flew up into the sky like messengers and you can just imagine the immediate alarm that took place. Most everyone, except the security people, just sat down and prayed in stunned silence.

The emergency people were there quickly and the Pope was off to the hospital right away.

There were many Vatican priests who spoke to us and asked that we be calm and stay seated so we would not get in the way of the investigators and police.

We were absolutely stunned and frightened.

Luckily, in our group there was a man who spoke and understood Italian and a few more who understood Polish, as they were the two languages being used. The rosary was said and after being told that the Pope was alive but gravely ill, they asked us to leave in an orderly manner and go to our destinations safely.

One member of our group knew Rome well and took us to the underground train. As we walked to the train station, we passed a TV store and one gentleman translated the news report that was on the TV telling us that the Pope was in the operating room and the situation was grave.

We got back to our hotel and had a quiet dinner, said a lot of prayers. Late in the night my husband said to me, “Did you ever dream we would be in such an historic event?”

No, but our Pope lived to do many wonderful deeds and eventually became a Saint.

This past week, York Township Supervisor John W. Valle and the Board of Trustees announced that it would pick up the slack for DuPage Senior Citizens Council and keep the Lombard/York community dining program operating at the York Township Senior Center, 1502 South Meyers Road.

“The Board of Trustees maintains that one of our main functions here is senior nutrition,” said York Township Supervisor John W. Valle. “We have partnered with the DuPage Senior Citizens Council for many years and during this time of difficulty York Township will do what it has to in order to feed its senior citizens.”

The township has a “rainy day” fund to help them through times such as this, Valle said.

“The Board has put a rainy day fund aside and if it ‘rains’ we will not allow our seniors to go hungry,” he said. “‘Meals on Wheels’ recipients who will be affected are invited to attend the York Township nutrition center lunches Monday through Friday. To make a reservation call the dining center at 630-620-2421.”

ComEd rates drop; Ameren Illinois increase

SPRINGFIELD — Last week, the Illinois Commerce Commission approved a rate decrease for ComEd but a rates increase for Ameren Illinois.

ComEd claims the lowered delivery rate is the result the rollout of the Smart Grid. Residential customers on average should pay about $1 a month less than their previous bills, beginning in January.

A $67 million rate decrease was approved by the ICC, $17 million more than the $50 million decrease proposed by ComEd. The ICC also approved delivery rate increases allowing Ameren Illinois to raise natural gas bills in the average home by $2 to $6 a month and electric bills by $2 to $7 a month. The new rates are expected to appear on customer bills starting in January.

ADDISON — The Addison Park and Recreation Foundation, through a community grant of $500 and in partnership with the Henry Hyde Resource Center in Addison, recently graduated 10 students through the C.H.A.M.P. Within after-school program.

The C.H.A.M.P. Within after school program is a six-week empowerment educational program that provides lessons and activities in the areas of Character, Happiness, Attitude, Mentality, and Purpose (CHAMP). The program is delivered under the guidance of a trained facilitator and uses The C.H.A.M.P. Within textbook and workbook exercises to strengthen awareness of these traits in the students.

“The Addison Park and Rec-

reation Foundation is a proud member of the National Association of Park Foundations,” said Donald Jessen, chair of the Addison Park and Recreation Foundation. “As a member, one of the benefits provided is the opportunity to adopt nationally acclaimed, locally delivered community outreach empowerment programs.

“We are so grateful for the partnership we have with the Addison based Henry Hyde Resource Center and the opportunity to give a little back to the community that we ask so much from during our annual events and capital campaigns throughout the year.”

The Henry Hyde Resource Center partners with public and/or private organizations

Elmhurst professor co-edits new book on 21st Century Chicago Explores how political climate affects Chicago’s efforts to be top-tier city ELMHURST — Constance Mixon, associate professor of political science and director of urban studies at Elmhurst College, has co-edited a new book that examines the social, eco-

nomic, political and governmental conditions of the Chicago metropolitan area and analyzes the region’s role in today’s globalized economy.

Twenty-First Century Chicago, Second Edition (Cognella Inc.), focuses on Chicago’s efforts in recent years to establish itself as a top-tier global city, and examines the governmental actions and politics of Mayors Richard M. Daley and Rahm Emanuel as they grappled with the city’s

most pressing challenges.

The book is an anthology of news stories, memoirs, firsthand accounts and research reports advocating for change for Chicago. The new edition includes Mayor Emanuel’s reelection speech, which describes his goals for the city and how he intends to govern, as well as several articles that are critical of the mayor.

In an article entitled “A Tale of Two Cities: Education and

Human Capital in Global Chicago,” Mixon details how educational institutions in Chicago reflect an organized hierarchy that is segregated, like Chicago’s neighborhoods, into haves and have-nots. She also argues that higher education’s increased focus on workforce preparation has deepened conflicts at colleges and universities over the democratic purposes of education and global demands for increased job training.

Fenton girls basketball coach Tim Anderson pointed to a recent three-game stretch on the schedule that he predicted would be challenging.

He was correct. Fenton played three Metro Suburban Conference West Division games against Wheaton Academy, Riverside-Brookfield and IC Catholic Prep. The Bison lost all three.

“Wheaton and R-B are two of the best teams we’ve seen so far,” said Anderson. “Wheaton is very good, has experience, has great guards and is strong inside. They beat us by a lot, but we played pretty well.

R-B, my goodness. They had three guards who made eight 3s. They have terrific guards.

Again, I thought we played pretty well against them. IC was a different kind of game.

They are a very strong inside team. We’ve seen mostly guard-oriented teams thus far and this was the first time we saw a team where inside is their strength.”

Despite the three losses, Anderson remains pleased with

where his team is headed.

“We haven’t won yet, but I’m so happy because we continue to work hard and we are getting better,” he said. “I talk about improvement potential and this team has a lot of improvement potential. Every game we are getting better. You can see their growth as players. Experience is something you have to earn and our girls are earning it. We just finished one of the toughest stretches on our schedule and now we are ready for the next phase.”

Anderson cited strong progress from sophomore Jessica McCauley. “Jessica has kind of taken that leap forward,” he said.

Krysta Wilson helped the Bison as well with five 3-pointers in the team’s game against IC Catholic Prep. Courtney Susmarski had 17 points in the game against Riverside-Brookfield.

“Krysta had a nice game and Courtney had a phenomenal game against R-B,” Anderson said.

Fenton played Ridgewood in an MSC crossover game earlier in the week. The Bison begin play in the Northside Prep tournament on Saturday. That tournament goes until Dec. 29.

“We’re looking for things to build on and they are there,” said Anderson. “We still have three-quarters of the season

left. If we keep going the way we’ve been going we will be OK. We got through this rough patch. I’m happy with their work ethic and the way they stick together. And they buy into what we want them to do.

Every game we’ve gotten better. We haven’t moved back yet. We look forward to playing these teams in our conference the second time around. I think we will be much more competitive. We want to be peaking at the end of the season. If you take a graph and make trends throughout the season, I don’t know if I’ve had a team that keeps going up. So far after nine games that is exactly what is happening.”

Hubbard scored 32 points in the fourth quarter to edge Fenton 71-70. “It was a good game until the fourth quarter,” said Fenton coach Josh Payton. “We were up 21-9 at the end of the first quarter and were winning by 15 at halftime and 16 going into the fourth quarter. They outscored us 32-15 in the fourth quarter.

Payton said offensive rebounding was a key determining factor in the game.

“They won on the offensive glass,” he said. “They had too many second-chance opportunities. They had kids who were 6-8 and 6-6. That was kind of a tough one for us. They scored the go-ahead basket on a second chance. Hubbard was really active on the glass and they had a couple guys who

The Addison Trail boys basketball team split a pair of recent games with District 88 neighbor Willowbrook and Stagg.

The Blazers recorded a 57-45 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over Willowbrook.

“We defended pretty well,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons. “We rebounded well and took advantage of the size we had.”

Eric Grygo led the Blazers with 17 points.

Colton Noel added 10 points and also had 13 rebounds. “The two of them did a lot of damage,” said Lyons.

Lyons was pleased with how his team competed throughout the game. “Willowbrook really never went away,” he said. “They had a chance to cut the lead in the fourth quarter, but we were able to get some stops and pull away.

It was nice to get our first conference win and win at home against a conference rival on the same night.”

The Blazers also lost a 52-38 non-conference

decision to Stagg. “We didn’t shoot it well and that was partially due to their defense,” said Lyons. “We shot 28 percent from the floor and still were trailing only 21-18 at halftime, which wasn’t really too bad. We missed too many open looks and silly turnovers. We felt we could stay close in the second half and have an opportunity to pull ahead, but we didn’t shoot well. We gave up 17 points in the third quarter and then we were chasing 10 points going into the fourth quarter. I felt they outworked us on both ends of the floor. Stagg is either 6-1 or 5-1. We knew it would be a good game. They dictated the terms of the game and we had to play catch-up basketball.”

We’re making huge steps forward in the program and we’re going to continue to work and focus on what we need to do in order to get better. We’re going to continue to see more dividends. ore than 200 Lincoln families enjoyed Brunch with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 5. The PTA made delicious food and children were able to make a variety of crafts, decorate sugar cookies, play bingo and Dance Dance Revolution.

Santa Claus also stopped by for a visit. A free prize drawing was held for a variety of gift baskets.

ADDISON — On Dec. 10, students in Addison Trail’s Hotel/ Restaurant/Travel Management class prepared and served lunch for Addison Trail and District 88 administrators and staff members.

The luncheon served as an end-of-semester performance evaluation for the students. Guests enjoyed a mixed green salad with dried cranberries, goat cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette; ravioli filled with mushrooms and cheese with an Asiago cream sauce and basil; sautéed Brussel sprouts with pancetta; focaccia bread; and a creampuff with homemade dark chocolate ice cream topped photo provided with a salted caramel sauce.

After decorating cookies all afternoon, these four boys from Lincoln School got a chance to Career and Technical Education teachers Joe Mahoney and Amy Murphy said they’re proud of the students’ accomplishments and sit down and try out their creations. Schmelter leading way for Addison Trail girls bowling team Interest in Blazers’ program high

Girls bowling is alive and well at Addison Trail.

First-year coach Steve Gilliam has 34 girls in the program this season.

“They are all so positive,” said Gilliam, Addison Trail’s assistant varsity softball coach and the former longtime head baseball coach at Willowbrook.

“We have a lot of first-time bowlers.

We’re working on fundamentals and then we’ll go from there.”

Back for Addison Trail this year are seniors Dinorah Cantu and Anaitza Roman, along with juniors Molly

Schmelter, Kaitlin Martinez and Justyna Barzykowska.

Schmelter was a spare away from qualifying for the state tournament last year. “Molly has been bowling well,” said Gilliam. “She’s a great leader for this group. Her and Dinorah have been outstanding leaders. They are very positive. They are helping the younger girls with fundamentals. Our focus is to improve our fundamentals and have some fun. With a lot of firsttime bowlers, we want to keep them involved in the sport and get that love and passion for it while improving.”

At the recent Willowbrook quad, Schmelter had a high game of 170.

Willowbrook girls bowling team defeats Morton

The Willowbrook girls bowling team recently evened its West Suburban Conference record to 1-1 with a 2,716-2,689 victory over Morton.

Senior Kelly Conley led the way with a 547 high series, which included a high game of 201.

Through late last week, Conley was leading the team with a 169-per-game average. Junior Jordan Tiberi was next at 166, while sophomore Dana Sasnick had a 164 average.

Tiberi owns the team’s high game this year with a 223. Conley has a high game so far of 222. Tiberi also has the team’s high series. She finished with a 646 at the Plainfield invitational.

Willowbrook assistant coach Kevin Allen has been pleased with the mental aspect of the team’s performance thus far.

“We are doing a great job of staying in the game during matches,” said Allen, filling in for head coach Bill Eufrasio

(knee surgery). “We always are focused and thinking about the next shot.”

One key focus for the Warriors in the early going of the season has been spare shooting.

“We have been working extremely hard on spare shooting,” said Allen.

“Spares are such an important part of the game that the girls need to try and get as many as they can to keep the momentum going.”

In addition to Conley and Tiberi, Allen has seen improvements from some of the younger bowlers on the team.

“I have been very happy with the performances of three of our sophomores, Dana Sasnick, Anna Cuccinotto and Betsy Sariano,” he said. “These three sophomores are working hard every day to get better. They have improved a lot already this year. Their ceiling is very high.”

The Warriors competed in the Streamwood invitational last weekend and hosted District 88 neighbor Addison Trail at Stardust Lanes earlier in the week.

“We have a great group of guys who are working hard to get better on a daily basis,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings. “We are quite inexperienced and young, but have a lot of potential and talent. I expect this group to improve more than any team I have been part of.”

Hastings is seeing improvements on and off the mat. “We already are improving our basic technique and we are getting into better shape and doing a more consistent job of keeping pressure on our opponents,” he said. “I really enjoy their attitude and work ethic. It’s going to pay off throughout the season.

We hope to consistently improve and be peaking at the end of the season.”

“We are looking forward to a successful season,” said Fenton coach Lee Cassidy. “Several of our girls worked hard in the off-season bowling in summer leagues.”

Sisters Morgan and Madison Martin were leading the way for the Bison early on. Through the team’s first two meets, the sisters were each averaging more than 180 pins per game.

Cassidy also has been pleased with the progress of Chelsey Anaya, Kelly Blecke and Beth Janovsky. “We are looking for the rest of our girls to add to the mix,” said Cassidy. “Chelsey, Kelly and Beth are posting some big scores.

We expect some of our underclassmen to step up and add to our depth.”

Fenton again has a schedule loaded with talented opponents. “We bowl against some of the best teams in the state,” said Cassidy. “I think this helps our girls understand the importance of practicing and competing at a high level. We hope this will better prepare us for the state series.”

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team tackles tough competition

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team isn’t shying away from tough competition.

The Knights recently competed in a non-conference game against Chicago St. Patrick and also took on Class 4A state power Riverside-Brookfield in a Metro Suburban Conference West Division contest.

In a 64-41 non-conference loss to St. Patrick, IC Catholic Prep trailed 14-9 after the first quarter and 35-20 at halftime. St. Patrick outscored the knights 18-9 in the fourth quarter.

Austin Reed led the Knights with 12 points and five rebounds. He made two 3-pointers. Angel Ramirez had nine points, while Troy Burrows added seven points. Garrett Cheng finished with five points.

“It was a really physical game,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “We struggled with the defensive intensity St. Patrick brought. We’re not going to face a lot of teams like that in the 2A playoffs. That’s why we schedule teams like that. They help get us ready and prepare us. It’s going to help us with physical play, quickness and the way we handle pressure.”

The St. Patrick game marked the return of players Matt Sutton and Cheng, who were transitioning from the football team’s long run in the state

playoffs. “For the most part we have everybody back now,” said Tyrrell. “Jordan Rowell (football team standout running back) will be back with us in a couple weeks. This will help get everybody used to each other.”

Tyrrell said the St. Patrick loss was far from alarming.

“Sometimes it’s good to be humbled early in the season,” he said. “It shows us where we need to get to.”

Tyrrell liked the contributions the team received from Burrows, Reed and Will Lyles.

“They gave us some great intensity,” said Tyrrell. “Will Lyles continues to be impressive in practice and games. He plays hard and works hard.

Jack Ricobene also has helped the team in a variety of areas. “Jack is coming off the bench and has been a big positive for us,” said Tyrrell.

“He’s definitely a leader for us this year. He’s helped us out with a lot of things when we’ve needed it.”

Ramirez, Tyrrell noted, put in time over the off-season to improve. “Angel has stepped up. He’s improved his game,” the coach said. “He’s showed up with an improved jump shot and improved ball-handling ability.”

Senior leadership also has been a bright spot for the team.

“I’ve been very pleased with our seniors,” said Tyrrell. “We have some true leaders on this team this year. Guys are vocal

Plans open house presentation for Jan. 7 ELMHURST — The City of Elmhurst has announced its plans to reveal the Draft Elmhurst Downtown Plan to the public at an upcoming Open House and Presentation to discuss the Plan and its recommendations.

What Is The Elmhurst Downtown Plan?

The Downtown Plan will serve as the City’s official guide for land use and development in the downtown area over the next ten years. It will act as a road map, detailing a long-term vision and policy agenda for important issues such as land use, parking and circulation.

Ultimately, the plan update answers the question: “What should our downtown look like in ten years and how do we get there?”

The Downtown Plan has been a community-driven process and its vision and policy recommendations are grounded in community outreach. Over the course of the last year, residents and stakeholders have had numerous opportunities to participate both in-person and online.

Open House & Presentation To help ensure Elmhurst continues to have a vibrant competitive downtown, the City is requesting comments and input on the Plan from residents, the business community, developers and others who have a vested interest in the City’s future. All are invited to attend and provide vital feedback as the City works with planning consultants Houseal Lavigne to develop the Plan.

The City will host an open house and presentation of the Draft Elmhurst Downtown Plan on Thursday, Jan. 7 from 6-9 p.m. at City Hall. It will be an opportunity to view key recommendations from the Plan and to talk to the consultants one-on-one to bring up any questions or comments.

Star Wars saga: New movie has fans young, old talking

I

t’s that special time of year and we’re a nation in anticipation. My family is experiencing the same starladen excitement as the rest of the country and I’m not talking about deciding who gets to place the topper on the tree. The newest Star Wars premiere is coming soon to a theater near you!

The whole Star Wars pop culture phenomenon started 38 years ago, in 1977, with the original movie. Because of its success the one movie quickly became a trilogy, with shows released in 1980 and 1983.

The second set of three movies spanned from 1999 to 2005 and gave us the prequel to the first three episodes. So, the first episode wasn’t the first, it was the fourth, even though it was released first. The second was the fifth and the third the sixth.

The fourth was the first and so on. You don’t have to be a Jedi Master to follow the logic. Even Jar Jar Binks could do the math.

At our house the excitement is as palpable as Senator Palpatine’s evil aura. My guys – all fans of the Force – debate intricacies that I’ve yet to understand, much less ponder. They are making plans to see the film at midnight the first day is it released. I am making plans to sleep. Sorry, I know how incredibly anti-Wookiee that sounds.

(Whispered) I’m not a huge fan of Star Wars. I don’t even own a lightsaber. I’m going to have to rewatch the first six movies in order to understand what’s going on in the current one. And, quite frankly, I’m not sure I have the time.

My husband is unaccepting and in denial regarding my total lack of any sense of the Force.

He’s been trying to get me to turn to the dark side since 1983, when he tricked me into seeing the third movie (which was actually the sixth, we just didn’t know it at the time). He said we were going to see “Flashdance,” or maybe it was “Terms of Endearment,” I can’t remember.

I do remember not seeing either.

Instead we went to “Return of the Jedi.” In a year with films like “Risky Business,” “The Big Chill” and “Staying Alive,” my husband, who was not my husband or even my boyfriend at the time, picked a movie that featured a Muppet in an attempt to impress me.

Our familial history with the franchise doesn’t stop there. Our sons were at impressionable ages when the second trilogy was released and another generation of Star Wars fans was created. One son even had his

own Jedi braid when he was about 5. My boys are serious about this “May the Force be with you” stuff.

While epic, here’s the Star Wars saga in a nutshell: Boy meets girl. Anakin Skywalker and Padme were 9 and 13 when they first met. They grew up, fell in love and got married. Anakin was busy becoming a Jedi, otherwise known as “one of the good guys,” but the dark side proved tempting. Padme got pregnant, delivered twins and died during childbirth. This further pushed Anakin into the abyss (literally), from which he emerged as Darth Vader – one of the greatest villains of all time.

Jump forward a couple of decades. The twins, Luke and Leia, are all grown up, but they don’t know they are brother and sister because they were separated at birth. Leia is a princess.

Luke’s Jedi skills are emerging.

“The Force is strong in this one.”

Darth Vader attempts to entice Luke over to the dark side. “I am your father.” Luke goes to Jedi school with a Muppet.

Meanwhile battles and wars break out and planets get blown up, but Leia’s funky hair always stays in place. There are also robots and lots of weird looking aliens thrown in for good measure. Luke fights his dad a couple of times in awesome action scenes featuring lightsabers as the weapons of choice for chopping off right hands.

Darth dies, but not before making peace with Luke. Leia falls in love with Han Solo and in a little known tidbit of trivia, Chewbacca marries and has a son named Lumpawarrump. I’m not making that up. I found the info on Wookiepedia, and I’m not making that up, either.

The world’s abuzz with Star Wars hype. And, despite not being much of a fan, I’ll probably go see the movie. Not at midnight, but I’ll go. With my husband – because he is a super fan and we sort of have a longstanding history with this Star Wars stuff.

For us, it all started a long time ago, in a movie theater far, far away, when we were just starry-eyed teenagers not much older than Padme was when she met Anakin. Sigh.
