Piece honoring retired orchestra director to be performed

Composition serves to celebrate ATHS’s 50th anniversary

In April 2016, the Addison Trail orchestras premiered a piece created in honor of the 2016 retirement of Addison Trail Orchestra Director and Music Department Chair Dan O’Connell, as well as Addison Trail’s 50th anniversary in 2016-17.

The piece, entitled “Legacy,” is an orchestral fantasy based on the melody from the school’s alma mater, “Hail to Thee,” which was debuted in March 2016. “Legacy” and “Hail to Thee” were composed by Robert Longfield, and “Legacy” was commissioned by Addison Trail, the school’s Music Department and the Addison Trail Music Booster Club. Addison Trail alumna Julia Dziabis, class of 2015, wrote the lyrics for “Hail to Thee.”

“Legacy” has been published with an orchestra version and a band version. The orchestra version will be presented during the 71st Annual Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra and Music Conference in Chicago. The performance will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 21, under the direction of Bryan Miller.

York legend Joe Newton dies at 88 Internationally known cross-country and track-and-field coach touched thousands of lives

Retired York High School coaching legend Joe Newton died early Saturday, Dec. 9 at his home in Goodyear, Ariz. Newton was 88 years old.

Newton’s son, Thomas, posted the following message on Facebook page regarding his father’s death.

sad day for not only myself and the Newton family but also the Elmhurst running community with the past and present men of the York cross-country program. This morning at 4 a.m., Arizona time, my father, Joseph R. Newton III, passed away.

“Additionally, I would ask the community and runners of the York cross-country program as well as friends to please respect the wishes of our family. My father was very much a family man first. The family wishes are to keep the funeral private and for the family. However, we will be having a memorial at a later time in early to mid-January.

“My hope is to have the memorial at York and I am working with the district now to that end. When I get details, I will forward them to this site as well as the Mr. Newton Celebration sight on Facebook as well as the Y82 reunion website.

“To those of you who called earlier today, I did not want to let any-

one know the condition of my father.

However, too many people had been made aware of my dad’s passing. I did want to gather as much information as I could before saying something, but as the day progressed, I could not let this go any further without saying something. So I am doing this now without a lot of detail in the hopes that we will not be overwhelmed with phone calls.

Newton led the York boys cross-country team to a record 28 state championships and 44 total state trophies (12 second-place titles

and 4 third-place titles). He also led the 2000 York boys track and field team to a state title.

Newton, a member of the National Federation of High Schools National High School Hall of Fame, was a teacher or coach at York for six decades. He took over the boys cross-country program at the school in 1960.

Newton’s cross-country and track and field teams won more than 2,050 dual meets (98 percent winning). He coached more than 300 all-state athletes and directed 20 of his teams to national cross-country titles.

Newton coached the York boys team full-time through the 2015 season. He was co-head coach with current York coach Charlie Kern Sr. in 2016 before retiring. A celebration of Newton’s career at York was held last fall at the school.

The Independent will have a story on Newton’s career, life and the impact he made on many student-athletes in next week’s edition.

Tom Cullerton disgusted with bloated handout to failed NIU executive State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is outraged that ousted Northern Illinois University President Doug Baker will receive another state contract from the university.

A judge ruled last month that the university violated the Open Meetings Act when it approved Baker’s bloated severance package this summer soon after he announced his resignation; therefore the severance package is now null and void. Today the board of trustees met and voted unanimously in favor of a comparable contract for Baker.

“Failed administrators and executives shouldn’t receive golden parachutes for wasting taxpayers’ time and money,” Cullerton said.

“Our state universities and community colleges need to stop abusing state funds. These dollars should go toward educating our children, not lining the pockets of ineffective administrators.”

Earlier this year, Cullerton was outraged that NIU had agreed to pay Baker $600,000 plus benefits when he announced his plans to step down this summer in the wake of the Illi-

nois Inspector General’s investigation into illegal hires made by the university.

The Inspector General’s report was publicly released on May 31.

The report details hires made by Baker and his administration that were paid contracts over $20,000, which are supposed to be subject to competitive bidding in accordance to state law.

The jobs were incorrectly classified to get past the requirement according to the report.

“Our public higher education institutions need to focus on finding ways to make college more affordable for students,” Cullerton said.

“State funds are meant to educate our children, not for overpaid administrators to mismanage and waste. This legislative session I plan on tackling and putting an end to this academic culture that perpetuates backroom deals for high paid executives and bloated payouts for those who fail to do their job.”

Cullerton is working on tougher regulations to stop state universities and community colleges from paying out administrators while under investigation or found guilty of university mismanagement.

Cullerton has been advocating for reforms to adjust the manner by which public universities and community colleges negotiate severance agreements after reports of abuse at College of DuPage, NIU and the University of Illinois.

This year he is fighting for tougher regulations and transparency at public higher education institutions.

Last week, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) chaired the first of a series of House Mental Health Committee hearings on mental health and addiction insurance parity. Panelists shared their insight regarding parity and the barriers to equal insurance coverage for mental health and addiction treatments.

“Tackling the issue of mental health in our communities is a fight on many different fronts. There are issues dealing with the negative stigma around mental health, debates over effective treatments and problems regarding insurance parity,” said Conroy. “This hearing was held specifically to highlight the issues of mental health and addiction parity. Unfortunately, having insurance is no guarantee of coverage for mental health treatment. Insurance companies have a history of discriminating and denying coverage for mental health and addiction treatment.”

Both the federal government and Illinois passed strict legislation on parity that requires insurance companies to provide equal coverage for mental health and addiction treatment as they would for any other health treatment.

Even with this strict legislation, panelists came to testify in front of members of the House Mental Health Committee this week on issues regarding par-

ity in Illinois’ insurance market and Medicaid services. David Lloyd of the Kennedy Forum, an organization dedicated to advancing mental health care, spoke on the lack of enforcement of parity laws leading to unequal treatment of mental health care coverage.

Mathew Timion shared the struggle his family endured when they tried to get his son treatment using private insurance. His story and those of the other panelists brought to light many disturbing trends, including tactics used by insurance companies to absolve their responsibility for payment and the fact that Medicaid, which has its own issues with parity, often provides more coverage than private insurance plans.

“We often believe the fight for mental health services and awareness ends with the passing of legislation, but even though Illinois has some of the strictest laws regarding mental health parity we are still finding barriers to coverage,” said Conroy. “Unfortunately, we must continue to pressure insurance companies and hold them accountable to the thousands of people who are waiting for the services that they are entitled to and pay for through their premiums.

Until then, we must continue these hearings and shed light on the flaws in our mental health care system.”

On Dec. 3, the Oak Brook Police Department received a phone call regarding a new vehicle that was stolen from a car dealership outside DuPage County. Through the use of GPS technology, the vehicle was tracked to a hotel in Oak Brook. It is alleged that

It is alleged that at approximately 12:45 p.m., Pinkney left the hotel in the stolen vehicle. It is further alleged that officers with the Oak Brook Police Department attempted to stop Pinkney at the hotel but were unable to, resulting in a high-speed chase. It is further alleged that Pinkney crashed the vehicle in

Broadview and then attempted to flee the crash on foot. After a brief foot chase, Pinkney was taken into custody.

“For the fourth time in a week, my office has filed charges against someone involved with a stolen motor vehicle that came into DuPage County,” Berlin said. “With today’s charges, we are sending the message loud and clear that if you are connected in any way to a stolen motor vehicle in DuPage County, you will be apprehended,

you will be charged and you will face the full force of the law.”

Pinkney’s next court date is scheduled for Dec. 18, in front of Judge Liam Brennan.

Fifth graders sort food at Addison Switchboard Last week, all of Addison’s 5th grade students participated in the annual tradition of sorting food for the Addison Community Switchboard’s Christmas collection.

Schools, churches, and businesses have participated by collecting non-perishable goods in November for the boxes the Switchboard will be distributing this holiday season to community members that are in

need. These food collections are all brought to Good Samaritan Church on Army Trail Blvd, where volunteers and students are put to work sorting the items into separate categories. Switchboard Director Jim Lombardo coordinates the volunteer efforts with the schools in order to give students the chance to actively participate in a project that helps people in their own community.

Addison Trail boys basketball team off to strong start Mehmeti named all-tournament at Elmwood Park/Ridgewood

The Addison Trail boys basketball team’s first seven games of the season have been notable for two reasons.

First, the Blazers were off to a 5-2 start through the first seven games.

And even more impressive is the fact the Blazers were 5-2 having played all those games away from home.

After winning its first five games, the Blazers dropped a 64-50 West Suburban Conference Gold Division game to Morton (the conference opener for Addison Trail) and then lost 61-56 to Lane Tech in a non-conference game.

“We’re definitely a new team this year,” said Addison Trail coach Bren-

dan Lyons. “We’re not young, but we have a balance of juniors and seniors.

Pretty much everybody is new to varsity basketball because we graduated a ton from last year. All we’re doing is looking for growth each game. I like our competitiveness for the most part in the first seven games. We have to find that ID that we are working toward and embrace it and come to play every night. Our schedule doesn’t do us a whole lot of favors from here on out.”

Addison Trail started the season by going 3-0 on the Elmwood Park side of the Elmwood Park/Ridgewood tournament. The Blazers defeated Chicago Foreman, Elmwood Park and Northtown Academy to win the Elmwood Park side of the tour-

nament. Addison Trail then defeated Ridgewood tournament side winner Wheeling to finish 4-0.

The Blazers then downed Glenbard North in a non-conference game to move to 5-0 on the season.

“Every game has been on the road,” said Lyons. “We’re competitive. Our guys are very coachable.

Over the course of seven games we haven’t had to get on them about staying focused or playing hard, which is nice. They definitely are good in that regard. It will take some more court time for us. Practice has been great, but we need some game action, varsity or JV, to get them on the court and build more confidence in what they are doing.”

Junior Adem Mehmeti was named

to the all-tournament team at Elmwood Park-Ridgewood. “He was up with us as a sophomore for most of the year last year,” said Lyons. “He comes back with the most varsity experience for us. Adem has been playing really well. He’s averaging 16 points a game and doing it at both ends of the floor.”

Junior JT Daniels also has excelled.

“JT has come on strong,” said Lyons. “He’s our second-leading scorer and the team leader in rebounds. He brings it every night. Him and Adem have stood out the first few games.”

Lyons said he’s been pleased with the depth his roster has produced.

“We have an eight-, nine-man rotation,” he said. “Guys are playing well on different nights. It’s nice to see

different guys step up. I would say JT and Adem have been the most consistent through those first seven games.”

Addison Trail returns to action Friday for its first home game against the season against Downers Grove South in WSC Gold action.

“We would have liked to have gotten those last two games,” said Lyons of the Morton and Lane Tech games. “Adem didn’t play against Lane Tech. He was injured. We hung in there until the end. As long as the guys understand winning is great, but getting better with losses is good too, then we will continue to improve.

I’m happy with the start, but with the schedule coming up the rest of the year, there really are no breaks for us.”

Willowbrook recently announced its fall athletics award winners.

In boys cross country, Matt Caron earned all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors and was a sectional qualifier. Peter Friguletto, Alec Gruchalski, Michael Isaacson and Omer Mirza were named academic all-conference.

In girls cross country, Victoria Palma earned all-conference honors, qualified for the sectional and qualified for the Class 3A state meet.

Daylee Braden also qualified for the sectional.

Briana Jones, Evelyn Yao, Lydia Bauernfreund, Kaylynn Kattiyaman, Angela Klingelhoffer, Jennifer Williams and Catherine Pegler were named academic all-conference in girls cross country.

In girls golf, Arielle Alibudbud, Sarah Cismesia, Leah Gensel and Sophia Parrillo were named academic all-conference.

Taylor Sarovich and Buddy Martens were named to the all-WSC Gold team in boys golf. Sarovich and Joey Guthrie were sectional qualifiers. Martens, Tim Keefe and John Morser were named academic all-conference.

In boys soccer, Tomas Hernandez and Efren Gomez were named allWSC Gold. Hernandez was named to the all-sectional team, while Miguel Correa was named honorable-mention all-sectional.

In girls volleyball, Taylor Balsitis and Payton Ceh were named to the all-WSC Gold team. Balsitis, Jessica Ragucci and Kathleen Smith were named academic all-conference.

In girls tennis, Millie Zachariah and Hailey Vogt were named allWSC Gold. Mariyah Khan, Maria Alcala, Danielle Celio, Lili Greiwe, Catherine Stork, Vogt and Zachariah were named academic all-conference.

In girls swimming, Elissa Haake earned all-conference honors by winning the 200 free and also set the conference record in the 100 free.

She also qualified for state in both events.

Also earning all-conference honors in swimming was the 400 relay team of Grace Roucka, Nancy Obrzut, Michelle Ramirez and Haake (second place). Anna Christiansen was all-conference in the 100 backstroke after taking third at conference. The 200 relay team of Haake, Christiansen, Rmariez and Obrzut took third and earned all-conference accolades.

The 200 medley relay team of Christiansen, Roucka, Gabby Panegasser and Nell Pawlowski took fourth and earned all-conference honors.

Estefani Karasek earned academic all-conference honors in swimming.

As noted in last week’s Independent, the Willowbrook football team won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 6-0 record and advanced to the state quarterfinals for the second year in a row.

All-WSC Gold recipients were Kevon Dobbins, Nick Sabatino, Jacob Entwistle, Scott Tumilty, Sam Tumilty, Brandon Loth, John Taylor, Christian Washignton, Matt Knudtson, Jack Jessen and Edgar Quintas.

Things are looking up for the Addison Trail girls bowling team.

Coach Steve Gilliam reports the team has more than 35 girls in the program this season.

“Half are freshmen and sophomores, which is good,” he said. “Last year, we had only one freshman, so we’ve increased our numbers there. We’re getting better.”

Addison Trail’s dual-meet portion of the schedule started with a 2,590-2,287 loss to Hinsdale Central in conference play. The Blazers also lost 2,696-2,497 in another conference contest.

In both matches, sophomore Becca Bero led the Blazers. She rolled a 438 series against Hinsdale Central and then notched a 521 series against Leyden. She had a 181 high game against Hinsdale Central and a 225 against Leyden.

“Becca ended last season on the varsity. She was on the JV team the first half of the year,” Gilliam pointed out.

“She’s done a great job for us this year.”

Gilliam noted numerous girls in the program bowled in leagues during the off-season to refine their skills.

“The girls bowled in leagues on their own,” she said.

“We had five girls who did that and it’s helped quite a bit. They have improved skills and have been contributing this year. Last year, we were at the bottom with no wins on varsity or JV. We are the closing the gap. The big thing we

talk about is individual improvement and we are accomplishing that goal.”

Rachel Soucie had a 379 series against Hinsdale Central and then had a 453 against Leyden, including a 179 high game. Junior Yvette Beltran rolled a 395 series against Hinsdale Central and had a 423 series against Leyden.

Gilliam noted the Addison Trail JV team won its first match of the year against Leyden.

Gilliam also lauded the efforts of captain Fiona Levesque. “She’s the captain and the team cheerleader,” he said. “She has a great presence in our program. She gets the girls going. She’s the leader of the group. She feels that’s her responsibility and she handles it very well.”

Junior Liz Cruz and senior Laura Gamble also have been contributing for the Blazers.

“It’s a great group that is a lot of fun,” said Gilliam.

“Attendance in practice has been outstanding. The girls want to be at practice and they want to be in the matches.

I’ve been very happy with the progress. They continue to improve individually. They are working hard to get over the hump and start winning some matches.”

Gilliam, the longtime former baseball coach at Willowbrook, is enjoying coaching the girls bowling team at Addison Trail. He’s also the varsity assistant softball coach there. “I had always coached boys sports,” he said.

“These girls are wonderful to work with and want to do well. They are so appreciative of any information you give them. It’s nice to be in this situation at the end of my career with kids who love to do this for the right reasons.”

Fenton girls basketball team stops long conference losing streak Acuna, Martinez playing key roles for Bison

The streak is over.

The Fenton girls basketball team snapped a 36-game conference losing streak with a recent 57-44 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division victory.

The Bison also lost 64-55 to Aurora Central Catholic and 65-48 to

Wheaton Academy in other recent MSC Blue play.

“What I really like about each game is that the girls are really having fun and enjoying their time together,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello. “It is great to watch the film and see the bench cheering wildly up 10 points or down 10 points. This is a really great group of girls.”

Mello has been impressed with the way the team’s fast-break offense is working. “We are executing our fast break at a really high level,” he said. “It’s because the

girls are really running the floor as soon as we get the ball.”

Mello said Fenton continues to progress in other areas. “We need to continue to work on everything,” he said. “It’s a cliché, but this season really is about the process. We aren’t living and dying with any individual game. We are working on getting better each day.”

Fenton also is making strides on the rebounding end, Mello noted.

“Our rebounding has shown some improvement,” he said. “We actually won the rebounding battle against Wheaton Academy.”

Mello has been pleased of late with the play of Andrea Acuna and Jenny Martinez. “Andrea has really stepped up lately,” the coach said.

“She is tied for second on the team in 3-point shots made and is shooting just below 40 percent for the season from three. Jenny Martinez also has stepped up. Whenever she is on the court, she finds herself in the middle of the action. She may be our smallest girl but she plays much bigger.”

In the Illiana game, Mello pointed out Fenton took 91 shots and 56 of them were from 3-point range.

“That was the real eye-opening effort—the fact we took 91 shots against Illiana Christian,” he said.

“Fifty-six of them were 3-point shots. That’s an impressive number of shots.”

Fenton hosts Elk Grove Tuesday in a non-conference game before playing Riverside-Brookfield at home Thursday in a MSC Blue game. Saturday, the Bison head to Elmhurst to face IC Catholic Prep in another conference contest before heading to Westmont for a non-conference game two days later.

Tyrrell is happy where his team is heading six games into the season.

“Winning against R-B on the road was good,” he said. “We’re in a really good spot right now. We had the one overtime loss to Manteno. Actually, in hindsight it was a very good loss. We analyzed film and looked at some things we were doing right. It helped us going forward in the Lisle and R-B games. Sometimes losses early in the season can be a good thing.”

The shorthanded Knights went on the road and came away with a 62-56 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Riverside-Brookfield.

The victory moved the Knights to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in MSC Blue play.

“We were a little shorthanded,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “We were without Alex Meurer and Zen Tverdokhlib. We had other guys step up.”

IC Catholic Prep trailed 11-0 to start the game and was down 16-7 after the first quarter. The Knights trailed 30-26 at halftime and 44-38 after three quarters. The Knights then outscored R-B 24-12 in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Cheng led the Knights with 18 points, including two 3-pointers. Khali Saunders added 11 points and two steals. Kris Askew had 10 points (2 three-pointers) and two steals. Nico Gaudio had eight points and eight rebounds, while Dominic

and Askew was at 7.0 points a game.

“Kevin is our offensive leader,” said Tyrrell. “He shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter against R-B. He did an outstanding job in that game.”

The team also has been bolstered

by Saunders’ presence. “Khali has been working his way back from football,” said Tyrrell.

“He didn’t play against Lisle and came off the bench against R-B and was a force underneath the rim. He’s extremely athletic and strong. He had 11 points and had a big steal down the stretch, plus he made big free throws.”

The Knights also recently did a team retreat to Michigan. “We went to a lake house in Michigan,” said Tyrrell. “The kids gave up their

rim and using his strength to get position on bigger defenders and he’s still able to finish,” said Tyrrell.

Sophomore Ryan Wojalewicz added nine points, while Cheng had five rebounds and three assists.

“We’ve seen solid play from Ryan,” said Tyrrell. “He’s a sophomore post player and has really impressed the staff so far. He’s an extremely hard worker who is very focused and extremely receptive to coaching. He’s working his butt off in the games and doing a lot of little things for us. He plays a big role on the team.”

Through the first six games, Cheng was leading the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game. Nico Gaudio was averaging 11 a game, while Meurer was averaging 10.6 points

Gaudio had seven points, including two 3-pointers, and was lauded for his defensive play.

“Dom is a sophomore and played an outstanding game,” said Tyrrell.

“Their best player had been averaging 20 points a game. The combination of Dominic and Kris Askew and a few others who guarded him, they did an outstanding job containing him. He only had two 3-pointers and one was late and in desperation. He also had two free throws. So holding one of the top players in the conference to eight points was a key to the victory. Credit to Dom and Kris.

Kris played football and is starting to get his basketball legs back. He hit a couple big 3s for us and had some great baskets in transition and a big steal down the stretch. We were down most of the game and fought back and made it a four-point game at halftime.”

In earlier play, the Knights defeated Lisle in non-conference play.

Meurer had 19 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. He shot 5 of 6 from the 3-point line. “Alex made extremely smart decisions with the basketball and found openings to get shots and then knocked them down,” said Tyrrell. “He played a great game for us.”

Holiday cheer: Call me the Grinch

There is too much guilt in the world. Still, I have a propensity to make myself more of it. Lately I’ve been feeling guilty about holidays.

Days that are supposed to be celebrations filled with joy and fun fill me with dread and anxiety. I bet I’m not alone.

Holidays often catch me off guard.

I’m busy living my simple and ho-ho hum life when – bang! It’s a national holiday, the kids are off school and I was supposed to bake a cake.

At this time of year my angst is exponentiated, or at the very least multiplied. I can’t bring myself to get hyped for the holidays. My family has gone so far as to declare me a Grinch, which makes me feel so much better about the situation.

I don’t have time to bake cookies, let alone decorate them with multiple colors of homemade frosting and candy sugar sprinkles. I’m no good at keeping secrets, so the kids always know about their presents ahead of time. I dislike shopping and go to great lengths to avoid crowded malls.

I prefer talk radio over holly-jolly Christmas carols. Red and green have never been my wardrobe colors of choice. I see no rational reason to

use valuable time to pull out a bunch of lights and decorations to doll up the house only to take them down one short month later. Ditto that for indoor garlands and bedecked fireplace mantles.

And I’ve never been able to embrace the dead tree in the living room thing. The tree nearly puts me over the edge. Every year.

All around me, people and families and neighborhoods and towns are jubilant with their Christmas preparations and jolly holiday spirits. They sip eggnog and deck the halls with beaming smiles and overflowing ho-ho-hospitality.

I used to try to compensate for my deficiencies, but the only person I fooled was myself and only a fool does that year after year. Over time

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I stink at holidays – all of them, not just Christmas.

For years I lamented my ineptitudes and wished I could be like everyone else – enthusiastically embracing holiday happiness all while wearing a blinking Christmas sweater.

Then, this year, I had an epiphany.

I’m not holiday-intolerant. I’m just easily bored.

The same tree with the same decorations in the same corner of the same room may be filled with nostalgia and warm fuzzies for some, but not me.

I guess I’m too pragmatic to be festive.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy this time of year. I just enjoy it

in a different way from some (most) people. I do like eggnog and spending time with my family (not necessarily in that order). I enjoy giving gifts (even if everyone knows what they are getting ahead of time). I appreciate the true spirit and meaning of the season.

And, although I may not be filled to the brim with holiday cheer, I wouldn’t mind a cup of one.

This year I even decorated a little.

I hung the stockings, which I guess qualifies as a bedecked fireplace mantle. I got some poinsettias and a pine scented candle to up the ambience. I even hung a wooden plaque that proclaims “We believe.”

Maybe I’m not a total Grinch after all. Who knows, maybe next year I’ll even bake cookies.
