Former School District 4 employee charged with stealing credit card points

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a Naperville woman had been charged with stealing more than $11,000 worth of My Bank…My Rewards credit card points from her former employer, Addison School District #4.

On Oct. 25, 2018, Judge Joseph Bugos issued a $10,000 with 10% to apply arrest warrant for Marcia L. Boyan, 50, of 2147 Oak Court, Naperville. On the afternoon of Oct. 31, Boyan turned herself in to authorities, posted the necessary $1,000 and was released from custody.

From February 2016 through April 2017, Boyan was employed by Addison School District #4, when it is alleged that Boyan stole more than 900,000 My Bank…My Rewards credit card points earned on Addison School District #4 credit cards. It is alleged that Boyan took the My Bank…My Rewards credit card points for personal use without authorization from the school district.

“Through her alleged actions, Mrs. Boyan abused the trust placed in her by Addison School District #4 for her own personal gain,” Berlin said. “I would like to thank authorities at Addison School District #4 for bringing this matter to our attention and for their cooperation throughout the investigation.”

Boyan has been charged with one count of Theft of Governmental Property in Excess of $10,000, a class 1 felony, one count of Theft in Excess of $10,000, a Class 2 Felony and two counts of Official Misconduct, a Class 3 Felony. Her next court date is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 30, in front of Judge John Kinsella.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Glenbard East student charged with threatening school held for $75,000 bond

About 500 Elmhurst College students, faculty members and staff gathered on the College Mall to form an enormous pink ribbon on Thursday, Oct. 25. It was all part of the College’s month-long Real Bluejays Wear Pink campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer, and funds for breast cancer research.

“This was a great way for our campus to come together to support all women battling breast cancer,” said Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken (front and center of ribbon). President VanAken is one of several DuPage County leaders taking part in the American Cancer Society’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced last week that an 18-year-old male Glenbard East student has been charged with posting a threat on Instagram directed at his school. Jairus Castillo, 18, of Glendale Heights, appeared in Bond Court where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $75,000 with 10% to apply.

On Oct. 20, 2018, Lombard police received information regarding a threatening Instagram Jairus Castillo post in which a male, not Castillo, was seen holding an AR-15 style rifle accompanied with the words “He’s shooting up the school Monday 3rd period after the bell.” An investigation conducted by the Lombard Police Department led to Castillo as the person who allegedly made the post. He was taken into custody the following day without incident.

“Threatening the safety and security of thousands of teachers, staff and students is not a joke,” Berlin said. “Any threat to the well-being of our students and teachers will be fully investigated and anyone suspected of such behavior will be charged accordingly.

Addison Village Manager Joseph Block has announced his intent to retire at the end of the year, capping a 40-year career in Public Administration, and a nearly unheard of 32-year tenure with the Village of Addison.

In his announcement to staff, Block expressed that he and his wife, Karin, intend to relocate out of the Chicago area to be nearer to their grandchildren. He reflected on the many changes he has seen in Addison.

“Buildings have been demolished, constructed, and redeveloped. New developments have transformed the look of the Village. A great deal of time, effort and resources have been invested in updating infrastructure,” he said. “I take a great deal of pride when talking to colleagues and to former residents who stop by for a visit and tell me that the town ‘never looked better.’”

Mayor Rich Veenstra thanked Block for his commitment and dedication to the community.

ECU and Orchestra to perform Handel’s Messiah

Elmhurst Choral Union and Orchestra will present Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Guest soloists Angela Presutti, Stacy Eckert, Hoss Brock, and Aaron Wardell join Elmhurst Choral Union and a professional orchestra under conductor Scott Uddenberg for the Christmastime favorite.

The performance includes all of Part One (“The Christmas Section”) and selections from Parts Two and Three (including the popular “Hallelujah Chorus”).

Addison Trail takes ‘Go Pink Week’ seriously Every Friday, Addison Trail students and staff wear Blazer blue, but the month of October always has a special color saved for Addison Trail’s weekly school pride day: pink.

For the 11th year in a row, Addison Trail helped fight against breast cancer through hosting a Go Pink or Go Home Week. Every year, groups at Addison Trail help out at different events to fundraise for the cause.

This year, the Addison Trail Girls Volleyball Team kick started the event on Sept. 11 with its annual Go Pink match against Willowbrook, and the team took home the win.

“I think it’s important our school does Go Pink Week, because it brings every Addison Trail student and teacher together to raise money for a great cause,” said Sophia Hawkins, senior and volleyball player.

“For the month of October, Orchesis students sell Go Pink shirts. All of the funds they make from selling these shirts goes to breast cancer research. Additionally, the Girls Volleyball Team hosts a Go Pink match every single season, whether it be at Willowbrook or Addison Trail. This year, we raised $1,000 by selling baked goods, pink ribbons and raffle tickets. All of these proceeds went to the American Cancer Society.

Throughout the past few years, AT has raised a lot of money for breast cancer awareness – and hopefully one day, all of these efforts will find a cure for this disease.”

Park District gears up for Turkey Trot 5K, Drumstick Dash The Addison Park District is busy preparing for the annual Turkey Trot 5K and Drumstick Dash on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Centennial Park.

The 5K steps off at 8 a.m. The Drumstick Dash for ages 3-12 years old will begin at 8:45 a.m.

The fee to enter the 5K is $25 for an individual or $20 per person for a family. (Proof of residency required.) Drumstick Dash entry fee is $15 per child.

Participants in the Turkey Trot 5K must predict their estimated time for completing the 5K race The overall male and female participant that is closest to their predicted time wins a Thanksgiving meal kit ($25 gift card, turkey, stuffing and a pumpkin pie).

Please note: The Turkey Trot will not be chip-timed and timing gadgets such as fitness watches, etc., will not be allowed.

All prediction times must be an hour or less, otherwise run times will not be eligible toward prize winnings.

Pre-registration is encouraged, however day-of registration will be available starting at 6:45 a.m. All pre-registered participants will receive a sweatshirt and a participation medal.

If you do not have insurance through an employer, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or a source providing qualifying health insurance, you have from now through Dec. 15, 2018, to enroll in a health insurance plan. Anyone who registered for insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace in the past must review and renew their current health insurance plan during Open Enrollment.

By law, each health insurance plan must cover (at a minimum) essential health benefits, including hospitalizations, doctor visits and prescription medicine. Financial assistance is still available to help lower costs of insurance for individuals meeting the income eligibility criteria.

Block came to the Village of Addison in 1986 as Assistant Village Manager, having previously worked at the villages of Woodridge and Orland Park. He was appointed Village Manager in 1989.

During his career in Addison he oversaw the community’s recovery from the Flood of 1987 that devastated DuPage County, implementing $30 million in flood mitigation projects, such as the Westwood Creek Dam & Pump Station and Louis Reservoir.

During his tenure, the Village has received three bond rating upgrades (from A to AA to AA+), and has been a leader in community relations, intergovernmental cooperation, and in the use of technology.

Mayor Veenstra and the Village Board will make an announcement about the new manager in the near future.

Sports Willowbrook football team headed to state quarterfinals for third year in a row

By Mike Miazga, CORRESPONDENT The Willowbrook football team finds itself in some familiar territory once again.

The Warriors were 36-26 winners over Maine West in the second round of the Class 7A state football playoffs in Villa Park.

The win moved Willowbrook to a perfect 11-0 and sends it to the state quarterfinals for the third year in a row. Willowbrook lost 60-27 to East St. Louis Senior in the 2016 quarterfinals and 42-7 to Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge in the 2017 quarterfinals. East St. Louis went on to win the Class 7A title that year, while Prairie Ridge went on to win the Class 6A state title last season.

Willowbrook heads west to face defending Class 7A state-champion Batavia either Friday or Saturday. Check IHSA.org for day and time with a chance to advance to the state semifinals on the line.

In the win against Maine West, the Warriors led 9-7 after the first quarter and 15-14 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.

Willowbrook led 29-20 after three quarters.

Scott Tumilty scored two touchdowns, including one via an interception return. C.J. Harris also scored two touchdowns, including one via a fumble recovery in the end zone.

Willowbrook also tied the longstanding program record for most wins in a season at 11, previously held by the 1975 team.

The Warriors now are 29-6 over their last three seasons under coach Nick Hildreth, who has led the Warriors to five playoffs appearancesone short of tying Clint Evans’ six playoff appearances when the school first opened.

Willowbrook gave up a season-high 26 points to Maine West last week, but broke the 30-point barrier for the fifth game in a row and seventh time this season. Batavia, which won the DuKane Conference title with a 7-0 mark, has faced 11 opponents with a combined 54-54 mark this season and three teams with winning records (6 playoff teams). Willowbrook, which won the West Suburban Conference Gold title at 6-0, has faced 11 opponents with a combined 48-57 record and three teams with winning records (4 playoff teams).

Batavia holds wins over Wheaton-Warrenville South (10-1) and St. Charles North (8-3), two other teams that have qualified for the Class 7A state quarterfinals. Those two teams meet this week in Wheaton in one of the two bottom-bracket contests. Batavia has won two state titles since 2013 and has been in the playoffs every year under coach Dennis Piron (who took over in 2011).

Up next: The winner of Willowbrook-Batavia faces the winner of No. 1 Chicago Simeon (11-0) against No. 8 Nazareth Academy (101) in the state semifinals (upper-bracket game). If Willowbrook beats Batavia, it either plays in the semifinals at Gately Stadium in Chicago against Simeon or hosts Nazareth Academy.

Addison Trail boys soccer team enjoys strong season Blazers won 17 games and second regional title in three years

The Addison Trail boys soccer team has plenty to be proud of after the season it turned in this fall.

The Blazers finishes 17-6 overall and took second in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 5-1 mark.

Addison Trail also won another Class 3A regional title.

The Blazers placed seniors Melvin Mora, Eduardo Huerta, Sam Sandoval and Julio Acosta, along with junior Martin Murillo and sophomore Anthony Hernandez, on the all-WSC Gold team.

Mora and Huerta earned all-sectional accolades.

Mora finished the season with 15 goals and eight assists, while Hernandez had 11 goals and five assists. Acosta ended his season with seven goals and six assists.

Sandoval, the team’s goalie, recorded 13 shutouts and had a goals-against average of 1.00 and also had an 87% save percentage.

“We played excellent defense all season long,” coach Ryan Dini said.

“Of our 17 wins, 13 were shutouts against a very difficult schedule. We started off the season 3-4 and ended up

winning 14 of our last 16 games. This shows the team really came together after our first third of the season and started playing team soccer. Our players started trusting everyone and we moved the ball side to side very well. I also think we did a great job transitioning on teams from offense to defense with our speed. We were excellent at the counter attack and were able to get a lot of goals on this type of attack.”

Dini took time to laud the efforts of senior midfielder Alexis Delapaz, Huerta and Sandoval in particular for their varied key contributions to the team’s success. Delapaz scored in three of the team’s last four games after scoring once in the previous 19 contests. “This was huge for us because it added another individual who could put the ball in the net at the end of the season,” said Dini.

Huerta, a senior, was strong for the Blazers at center back. “Eduardo was so solid in the center of our defense and was consistent all year,” the coach said. “He cleaned up our mistakes and was one of the better defenders in the state this year. We are really going to miss him next season.”

Sandoval had the aforementioned 13 shutouts in goal. “To have 13 shutouts this year was incredible,” said Dini.

“He also was the leader of this team.

His instruction to his teammates and making sure we kept our shape was very important for our team. He also had some huge saves in conference

and in the playoffs to allow us to have a 17-6 record this season.”

Dini said he’s most proud of the team winning the regional title. “It’s our second one in the last three years so that is special,” he said, noting the last one before 2016 came back in 2000. “As you can see, there was a big gap between 2000 and 2016. I also am proud of how this group went unranked to begin the season and finished in the top 20 in the polls (by two media outlets).

Also, making the sectionals is never easy, so making it to the last 32 teams in the state was a good achievement.

We ended up losing to Benet Academy in double overtime and they only lost four times all year.

Dini noted the Blazers return nine of 20 players next season. “We did have a lot of seniors this year, but they showed great leadership, so I hope our younger players learned a lot from them,” he said. “We have to replace our starting goalie, three of our four defenders and our whole midfield. This will be very difficult, especially considering how well our team played this year. With that being said, our JV and sophomore team had some very nice players who should transition nicely to the varsity level next year. That is very exciting.

We also had some players who chose to play club or academy soccer this past season, so if we can add a few of them we should have a strong team again next season.”

Fenton’s Elizondo, Kirkwood compete at state cross country Bison girls volleyball team concludes milestone season

A pair of Fenton cross-country runners wrapped up their seasons in the state finals meet this past weekend.

On the boys’ side, Fenton junior Samuel Elizondo finished 66th in the Class 2A state finals meet at Detweiler Park in Peoria. He covered the course in 15:53.12.

In the Class 2A girls’ race, Fenton senior Ruth Kirkwood finished 186th with a time of 20:39.66.

Fenton Girls Volleyball The Fenton girls volleyball team finished the season with a 24-12 overall mark and went 3-3 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

Fenton’s Vicky Krzyszkowski and Mackenzie Miller earned all-conference honors.

Miller was tops in service percentage at 96.8% or 399 serves inbounds out of 412 attempts. Miller also had 92 service aces.

Krzyszkowski led the team with 224 kills and 56 blocks. Miller was tops in setting assists with 596. Miller also led the team in digs with 146.

“The team focused on going out and playing at a high level just about every match,” Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer said. “We had very few ‘off’ matches. No matter the level of competition, we did our best to play the type of volleyball we wanted to play.”

Kleidorfer said the team’s biggest strides came in the passing department. “I think our passing improved the most,” she said. “It usually has been a weakness for our program, but we did have glimpses of being a really good passing team.”

Kleidorfer had plenty to be proud of both offensively and defensively with this year’s squad. “Offensively, when we were able to get the ball to Mackenzie in a good spot, she made

the right decision more often than not and our hitters were very aggressive with their attacks. We had four girls with more than 100 kills, where in years past our team leader was barely over 100. Defensively, our communication level was much better this season. While we did have some balls that hit the floor due to miscommunication, there were a lot fewer than in the past and that made us a much better team.”

Miller and Krzyszkowski were named the team’s co-MVPs, while Agata Kukielko earned the team’s coaches award. “Mackenzie was on varsity for four years and the other two for three years,” said Kleidorfer.

“Their leadership and determination were huge in the team having the success we had. There were days where they could not be stopped and they gave us everything they had every day. The program will greatly miss them.”

The Bison made it all the way to the supersectional round of the Class 2A state playoffs. Fenton lost to Crystal Lake South 5-0 in the Class 2A Burlington Central supersectional and ended up as one of the top eight teams in Class 2A this season.

Ruiz is looking forward to next season when Fenton joins the Upstate Eight Conference. “With the success the team had this year and moving to a new conference next year, it will make for a more demanding off-season and force us to work hard and get better,” he said.

Police Department’s Accreditation Assessment Team seeks public input The Elmhurst Police announce that a team from the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police will arrive at the police department on Nov.12, to examine all aspects of the agency for accreditation through the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP).

The on-site assessment will occur on Monday and Tuesday, November 12th and 13th, at the Elmhurst Police Department. During the assessment, the department will be judged on 67

separate ILEAP standards including Operations, Training, Personnel, and Administration. As part of the assessment process, members of the community are invited to offer comments to the assessment team by calling (630) 530-3204 on Monday, Nov. 12, between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Comments are limited to 5 minutes and must address the Elmhurst Police Department’s ability to meet the ILEAP standards, which may be viewed online at http://www.ilch-

iefs.org.

If awarded, the Elmhurst Police Department will join the ranks of 28 agencies within the state of Illinois that have received ILEAP Accreditation. Chief Michael Ruth said, “The ILEAP accreditation will showcase the professionalism and best practice methods that the Elmhurst Police Department has implemented and that we are proud to demonstrate within our community.”
