Teachers strike averted

Addison School District 4 teachers, Board approve contract

FOR THE ADDISON INDEPENDENT

After nearly seven months of negotiations, the Addison School District 4 Board of Education and the Addison Teachers’ Association approved a new four-year contract last week at a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 23. District 4 Superintendent John Langton said the meeting was scheduled as a discussion, but progress toward an agreement quickly grew until a 4% pay increase in each of the next four years was finalized. “The Addison teachers are pleased that we finally have a contract,” said union co-President Bob Wojtas. “The support we received from our community has been fantastic.” The 327 union members working at the district’s nine schools – including Addison Early Learning Center, Ardmore Elementary, Army Trail Elementary, Fullerton Elementary, Lake Park Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Stone Elementary, Wesley Elementary and Indian Trail Junior High School -- had been working since June under the terms of an expired contract. With nearly 4,000 students, mostly from Addison but also serving some from Bensenville, Itasca, Lombard, Villa Park and Wood Dale, the District was facing a possible teachers strike as early as Thursday, Oct. 24. The union had filed a notice through the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board of their intent to strike.

The teachers union contended that District 4 had the lowest pay of any school district in DuPage County and lost many teachers to higher-paying districts. A statement from the union released before the agreement read as follows: “We are in the middle of a teacher shortage. If we are not competitive, we will continue to lose teachers and that means our students lose, our schools lose, and our community will lose.” The union also pointed out that District 4 has the highest fund surplus of all the elementary school districts in DuPage County, averaging nearly $5.6 million a year. District officials countered that much of the nearly $47 million reserves are earmarked for infrastructure improvements at the many aging facilities. The surplus ensures that residents will not see any increase in taxes to pay for the repairs and upgrades, according to Langton. The new contract includes a 4% increase in pay to the union teachers, speech pathologists, social workers, psychologists and media specialists employed at the seven elementary schools, one junior high school and the early learning center before July 1, 2019. New teachers entering the district with a bachelor’s degree will start
