Residents invited to visit Addison’s Sister City

Info meeting about trip next fall set for Nov. 19 ADDISON — For more than a decade, Addison has cultivated a relationship with the city of Triggiano, Italy. In 2016, residents and community members are invited to further extend that relationship by participating in a visit to Addison’s Sister City of Triggiano, and then vacationing in a choice of areas in Italy.

On Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015 at 7 p.m., Mayor Rich Veenstra will host an informational meeting in the Village Hall Board Room, at 1 Friendship Plaza, to allow those who might consider taking the trip to learn more and ask questions. Maria Carbonara, travel agent with Old Town Travel, will be on hand to discuss the trip, which will take place in September 2016.

After 3 days of experiencing the people, places and culture of Addison’s sister city, the tour will split into two groups – some traveling north to Sorrento, Rome, Venice and Florence, and others going south to

• Trash pickup reminder to residents When placing your trash and recycling cans at the curb for pickup each week, it is important to remember that these should NOT be placed in the street. This is a dangerous interference for traffic, and when winter comes, it is even more dangerous for snow plows.

Trash cans should always be placed on parkway or on the apron of your driveway, never in the street.

• New recycling center hours The Village of Addison Recycling Center, at 711 N. Addison Road, has instituted new hours and will be open Saturdays only, 8 a.m. - noon. The Recycling Center is for use by Addison residents only; residency WILL be checked.

• Addison Connect mobile app available The Village of Addison’s new smartphone app, Addison Connect, now allows residents to identify issues and report those service requests directly to the appropriate department.

Residents can upload a photo or video of the concern and mark the geographic location on a map. Each request is provided a unique tracking number so the user is able to see when action is taken.

Some of the concerns that residents can report through the app include potholes, abandoned vehicles, illegal trash dumping and broken streetlights.

This information is immediately sent to the appropriate staff member, as well as his supervisor, and a backup staff person in case someone is out of the office or on vacation.

Emergency concerns should always be reported to 911.

This is the third year BMO Harris Bank and the Chicago Blackhawks are recognizing one volunteer of the month, awarded for their efforts in giving back to their community.

All candidates are nominated by teammates, coaches, friends or family members through the Blackhawks’ website and are judged by an amateur hockey committee.

State Treasurer Michael Frerichs visits Elmhurst College Calls on lawmakers to release MAP grant funding, invest in higher education

ELMHURST — Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs visited Elmhurst College on Tuesday, October 13 to urge Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Illinois General Assembly to approve Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants for some 130,000 students across the state who rely on it to help pay for their higher education.

It was a full house in the Founder’s Lounge inside the Frick Center when State Treasurer spoke following an introduction by Larry Braskamp, interim president of Elmhurst College. Also on hand was David Tretter, president of the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities; Donna Carroll, president of Dominican University, and representatives from Harper, North Central, Triton and other area community colleges; and, several state legislators, including Illinois State Representative and House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (82nd District); Illinois State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park); State Representative Kathleen Willis (D-Addison) and other elected officials. Also present was Lee A. Daniels, former Illinois House Speaker who is currently on staff at Elmhurst College.

need. More than 25 percent of Elmhurst College undergraduates are set to receive MAP grants.

“I am looking forward to hearing the students,” Frerichs said in his remarks. “Their stories are very compelling.

Some couldn’t have come to a nice college like Elmhurst without the MAP grants.

They have already received letters promising they would have money to complete their education, but now the Governor has vetoed the bill* that included this funding.

“I want students to feel secure that they can go to school and finish their education. It’s unfair to the students who applied to have that money in limbo.” (*The MAP funds are a part of Senate Bill 2043 which is currently stalled in the House Rules Committee.)

He wrapped up his comments by stressing the importance of investing in education for today’s young people.

“There is no better investment that higher education,” he said. “Nothing will hinder our future more than failing to support this program and the students who rely on it.”

Donna Carroll, president of Dominican College, said of the 3470 students enrolled, almost one-third of them depend on MAP grants.

“At, we have 1157 Dominican students whose funding is

in jeopardy,” she said. “The best thing about the MAP grants is that they offer higher education to a high risk and underserved portion of the population. Higher education is no longer just for the ‘white and wealthy.’”

She went on to share statistics on the success of the program. For example, of all the students whose educations are funded by MAP, 80% return each year and the graduation rate is 70%; three out of four students graduate on time; and, the default rate is just 2.8%.

“Illinois has made promises to 1157 Dominican students with the expectation they could finish their education,” Carroll added. “The state needs to keep its promise if it expects residents to keep its faith in government. It’s a public trust that should not be violated.”

It was interesting to note that all the schools represented in the room said they had been “floating” the students’ credit during this first semester of the academic year. Everyone was able to stay in school this semester on the expectation the MAP grants will be funded. But another semester is on the horizon after the first of the year.

It remains to be seen whether or not Springfield will come through with dollars needed.

Addison Oct. 29 Daquan A. Williams, 18, of Willowbrook, was arrested on the 800 block of No. Mill Rd at about 11:15 a.m. for criminal damage to property. He was released on an I-Bond.

Oct. 27 Omar Bouso, 26, of Elgin, was arrested near Route 83 and Frontage at around 5:39 p.m.

Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Bouso was found to be DUI and in possession of cannabis. He was charged with DUI, unlawful possession of cannabis, improper lane usage, following too closely and improper passing on the shoulder of a road.

Oct. 26 Jessica L. Tope, 35, of Bellwood, was arrested near Lake and Ellsworth at around 9:49 p.m. Police said Tope had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s

Department.

Oct. 25 • Matthew J. Kenney, 32, of Sterling, Ill., was arrested near Lake and Addison at around 6:44 p.m. and charged with DUI, no insurance and improper lane usage.

• Dario Pinela, 25, of Wood Dale, was arrested in the 600 block of N. Iowa at around 2:29 a.m. and charged with DUI, transporting open alcohol and no insurance. Police said an officer observed a vehicle parked on the roadway with its lights illuminated during the no parking 2-5 a.m. parking restriction and approached the vehicle to speak to the driver, Pinela, who was found to be DUI. Oct. 23 • Samuel S. Karim III, 19, of Norridge, was cited for retail theft at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 5:35 p.m.

• Ivelisse M. Maldonado, 35, of Chicago, was arrested at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 10:17 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

• John G. Pack, 21, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 100 block of Michael Lane at around 4:06 p.m. and charged

with criminal trespass to property.

Villa Park Oct. 24 • Jeffrey S. Kurucar, 53, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 900 block of S. Ardmore at around 8:49 p.m. and charged with assault, battery, violation of an order of protection, obstructing a police officer and resisting a police officer.

• Theft was reported in the 200 block of W. North at around 7:29 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect stole a $100 bill from the cashier’s counter.

When you no longer have a dog, you don’t have anyone begging for a tummy rub. No one kisses you all over your face or sniffs you in unseemly places.

When you no longer have a dog, sometimes you dream about dogs and sometimes even about the one you used to have. Sometimes dogs can talk in your dreams. Those are the good dreams.

When you no longer have a dog and you hear creaks or noises from upstairs you automatically think it is your dog and then remember she is gone and it couldn’t possibly be her. You wonder how long it will be before creaks and noises become just creaks and

noises.

When you no longer have a dog, suddenly puppies take on a whole new level of cuteness and you think, “Maybe,” but then just as soon, “Maybe not,” because you know your heart isn’t ready yet. It may never be. But you never know.

All this – good and bad – is okay, because if you no longer have a dog it means that at one time you did. In doing so, you experienced unconditional love and a companionship like none other. That is a gift.

And I believe if you no longer have a dog, it is a gift waiting for you in heaven. Because all dog owners understand: it wouldn’t be heaven if dogs weren’t there.

The barks of other dogs resound and seem louder than they were before. When a neighbor’s dog barks and wakes you in the early morning or late night it doesn’t so much annoy, but provokes a twinge of sadness.

When you no longer have a dog you don’t have to worry about dog-hair dust bunnies or running out of dog treats. You don’t ever have to read the label on dog food for the hundredth time to make sure real meat is the number one ingredient. You can save money at the grocery store because dog food is expensive.

When you no longer have a dog you notice other people with their dogs. It seems as though everyone else has one. They are walking on the street or playing fetch or post-

hen you no longer have a dog the world is a different

recently touched a tile in my shower (it looked like it was poking out a tiny bit at the corner) and it fell off. Oops. That led to a total bathroom remodel. (Because we’re crazy that way.) I LOVE our new bathroom but that is not my point here today.

A gutted bathroom meant I had to use the shower and toilet in our lower level. I had thought it would be an incredible hassle (and race against time) to have to run downstairs to pee first thing in the morning. Turns out my bladder is not the size of a peanut and can go all night and then some.

I got used to showering downstairs in what had been the “boy bathroom” and I quickly got used to brushing my teeth in the kitchen sink and putting on my make up at my bedroom dresser.

Now that my bathroom is done and gloriously wonderful, I caught myself heading downstairs to use the toilet and I went to the kitchen sink looking for my toothbrush.

We are liked trained monkeys. (I mean this with love, I’m one of them.) Go to a foreign country and you will get used to all kinds of toilets, and water with no ice, and warm beer. Customs and habits and how things are vary and we can vary our own.

It is great news that we can get used to new things. For example, my breakfast back in the day was a Pop-Tart and a Dr. Pepper. I evolved over time to having to start my day with yogurt and granola, and now I much prefer a protein smoothie as my breakfast.

It took me no time at all to get used to having gray hair. That was a Big Deal to let my hair go natural and now I don’t even think about it. Except for how easy and wonderful it is to not color my hair.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team reaches regional final

The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team saw its 2015 season come to a close after a 25-22, 28-26 loss to Rosary in the championship match of the Class 3A Lisle regional.

“We gave them a little more than they expected,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy D’Amore. “We played well. It was a great match with a lot of momentum swings back and forth. We came up against a team with a big front line, a good libero and a strong setter.

We knew we had to execute our game plan and we had a good one. We had a good practice the day before and we stuck to the game plan. I couldn’t have asked for more from the girls.

They played with a lot of heart and fought for every point. I was proud of what they did.”

The Knights advanced to the final after downing host Lisle 25-9, 20-25, 25-16 in the semifinals.

“We had beaten Lisle twice during the season,” said D’Amore. “This time it went three. We had a little scare but we were able to come back.

And I think that really helped us going into the Rosary match. It was a wakeup call for the girls.

It helped get them focused. It was scary, but it was helpful for us in the end.”

D’Amore saw plenty of positives during the regional con-

tests. “For a couple years now it’s been about the team effort,” she said. “Our strength is our team defense and team ball control. Everybody stepped up in different ways at different times. Our defense played well and we passed well. Kerry Mulligan, Giana Curran were back there and those two along with Claudia Koch and Tess Reardon do the majority of the passing. They did well going up against Rosary’s hard hitters.”

Middle blockers Katie Hendricks and Katie Harvey also played well for the Knights.

“Our middles made some great adjustments,” said D’Amore.

“Katie Hendricks and Katie Harvey stepped up.”

Junior Kaitlyn Falduto was key for IC Catholic Prep from the service line. She held serve for 21 points in one of the regional matches, which included three aces.

“Kaitlyn is a serving specialist. It’s a tough role to come off the bench like that in the middle of a match,” she said.

“I was very impressed with her ability to handle the pressure of a big match. She went in there and was very aggressive. She kept them out of system. All our servers did a great job, but Kaitlyn especially did a good job. We were down 9-2 at one point I think with her serving and the next thing you know it’s 9-9.”

IC Catholic Prep finished the season at 24-12 and finished fourth in a competitive Metro Suburban Conference West Division.

“If you are able to win 20 matches you have to be pretty happy,” said D’Amore. “There were times this season when we played brilliantly. I thought we played a great match against Timothy Christian early in the season and we played well against St. Ed’s. There were some matches where we hit our stride and there were some more at the end of the season.

We got better and stronger as a team and as a coach you have to be happy with that.”

Koch, Reardon and Mulligan earned all-MSC West Division honors. Koch, Mulligan and Harvey graduate this school year, leaving the Knights with seven returning players from this year’s roster.

“It will be tough to replace those three seniors, but I also think we have some good experience returning next year,” said D’Amore.

The Cubs did not make the World Series, but had a great year!

It was too bad that Ron Santo, Ernie Banks and Harry Caray DON were not here FIGARELLI to enjoy as far as they went.

I do think that the strategy the Cubs used did not work. It seemed like everyone wanted to hit a home run instead of just getting on base. I blame the head coach for not calling for a bunt, a drag bunt, choke up on the bat, take a walk, just get the pitcher out of his rhythm and comfort zone.

Third graders hold ‘Pumpkin Investigation’ Learn ins and outs of fall vegetable ADDISON — Third grade students in Mrs. Pereda’s class at Stone School conducted a pumpkin investigation this week in science.

Students worked in teams to measure their pumpkin’s height, width, and circumference using their choice of two different tools—rulers, paper clips, tape measures, linker cubes. They had to predict how many seeds they could pull out in one handful, as well as how many seeds there were in the

whole pumpkin. After predicting, they had to scoop out and count the seeds to see how close their predictions were.

Another popular activity had students predicting whether a pumpkin would sink or float. Students had to make a prediction and then explain why they made that choice before Ms. Anderson put the classroom pumpkin in a tub of water to find the result. Addison’s relationship with Triggiano was made official on Sept. 23, 2003, when the Sister City Agreement was signed by then mayors Larry Hartwig and Francesco DeNicolo. This was during the first trip Addison officials made to Italy. Since that time, officials have visited each other every few years, including a visit last October

by Triggiano Mayor Vincenzo Denicolo.

In addition, thanks to fundraising efforts by the non-profit organization Village of Addison Sister Cities, Inc., students from Addison and Triggiano

have participated in a student exchange program, allowing groups to visit one another, attend classes and learn about each other’s customs and culture.

The planned trip in 2016 is an opportunity for residents to experience this same type of exchange, said Mayor Veenstra.

“Learning about a city, or country, just isn’t the same thing as experiencing it,” he said. “Our relationship with Triggiano has yielded business and cultural opportunities, as well as personal friendships.

I hope many of our residents take advantage of this upcoming trip.”

ADDISON — Jessica Mell has been named as Addison Trail’s October recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her academic accomplishments. A senior, Jessica was recognized during the Oct. 26 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

By the end of her senior year, Jessica will have taken 10 Advanced Placement (AP)/ college-level courses and 10 Honors courses.

“Mell has always been my ‘right-hand girl’ in the classroom,” said AP English Literature and Composition teacher Jim Perusich. “She is an astute listener, whose ability to organize classroom lectures into strategic ways of thinking about reading and writing makes her one of the most aware and self-disciplined students I’ve ever taught. What is most notable about her, however, is her uncanny ability to correct me when I’m wrong and always, always tell me what we did last, what we should be doing next and why what we just covered could be explained better if I just gave her the chance to explain it to the class in her way with her own brilliant examples. She knows exactly what I’m talking about. And she’s always delightfully right.”

AP Biology teacher Carolyn Erwin agreed.

“In the short time I have known Mell, I have been most impressed with her overall performance in AP Biology,” Erwin said. “Her attention to detail has contributed to her incredible success in this class and is indicative of her overall work ethic. She consistently demonstrates the traits of an excellent scholar, and it is truly a pleasure to have her in my class.”

Jessica also is very involved in extracurricular activities at Addison Trail. During her freshman and sophomore years, she participated in basketball, and she has played volleyball all four years of her high school career. Her most rewarding accomplishment so far was winning the West Suburban Conference Gold Division Conference Championship in volleyball – the Girls Volleyball Team hasn’t won that title since 2006, and Mell was proud to be part of the winning team. Jessica competes on a club volleyball team as well and was named Captain of that team last year.

“Mell took on the role of a silent leader immediately,” said Katie Prast, Varsity Girls Volleyball Team Assistant Coach.

“When she earned a role on the varsity team, she made the transition flawlessly, consistently working hard every day to improve her own skills and the chemistry of her team. She

regularly leads by example, being a selfless role model and a mentor for those around her.

Mell is a very bright and intelligent young woman, who will positively impact those around her with poise, leadership and humor.”

Jessica also has participated in Lettermen Club, Student Council, Pay It Forward and National Honor Society. She has worked with various community service organizations as well such as Feed My Starving Children, Kiwanis Peanut Day and Relay For Life. Jessica was the Boy’s Volleyball Team Manager her sophomore year and plans to continue in that role this spring.

Jessica is looking to attend University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she plans to major in mechanical engineering. Her parents own a foundry and machine shop in Chicago, and she would like to continue the legacy of her family’s business.

Addison Trail, District 88 enjoy dinner for a cause ADDISON — On Oct. 29, Addison Trail and District 88 staff and administrators enjoyed a tasty treat for a cause.

Students in Addison Trail’s Hotel/Restaurant/Travel Management class prepared Roasted Butternut Squash, Cream of Chicken with Wild Rice and Hearty Beef Vegetable soups for diners who donated $5 or more to benefit Feed My Starving Children.

Those who participated in the “Fall in a Bowl” lunch event received a bowl of soup, bread, dessert and a drink.

Fenton’s Vazquez-Perez wins sectional cross-country title Bison cross-country teams qualify five for state

Fenton junior Jose VazquezPerez hit the trifecta.

Vazquez-Perez won his third cross-country individual title in as many weeks, this time finishing first at the Class 2A Chicago University High sectional.

Vazquez-Perez will run in Saturday’s Class 2A state finals in Peoria.

Vazquez-Perez also won a Class 2A regional title and won the Metro Suburban Conference West Division championship.

Vazquez-Perez will be joined at state by teammates Samuel Hernandez and Cristian Sanchez. Hernandez, a senior, took 23rd with a time of 16:30. Sanchez, a sophomore, placed 28th with a time of 16:40. All three earned individual state-qualifying berths by being among the top seven runners not on statequalifying teams.

Fenton missed qualifying for state as a team by three points.

The Bison took sixth with 146 points. St. Viator snared the fifth and final state spot with 143 points.

Junior Harry Contreras finished 46th with a time of 17:07.02. Senior Antonio Aguilera was 48th with a time of 17:09.09. Sophomore Alex Whyte was 55th with a time of 17:30.42 and senior Felipe Ruiz was 56th with a time of

17:32.02.

Fenton girls cross country The Fenton girls cross-country team qualified a pair of runners for Saturday’s Class 2A state finals in Peoria.

Sophomore Jessica McCauley and senior Marisol Garcia both advanced out of the Class 2A Chicago University High sectional.

McCauley finished 15th in the field with a time of 19:52.

Garcia was 18th with a time of 20:04. Both were among the top seven finishers not on state qualifying teams.

Fenton took eighth as a team with 202 points. Sophomore Charity Bullis was 44th with a time of 21:21.54. Senior Rebecca Garcia took 62nd with a time of 22:15.02. Freshman Alyssa Silva was 79th with a time of 23:34.76. Junior Katherine Dominguez was 83rd with a time of 23:59.87, while sophomore Catherine Tillesen was 85th with a time of 24:00.91.

Fenton boys soccer The Fenton boys soccer team saw its season come to a conclusion after a 5-1 loss to Rockford Boylan in the semifinals of the Class 2A Hampshire sectional. Fenton had won the Class 2A Hampshire regional title the week before.

Fenton girls volleyball The Fenton girls volleyball team opened postseason play with a 25-15, 25-7 win over Proviso East at the Class 4A Chicago Whitney Young regional.

Addison Trail boys soccer team enjoys prosperous season Blazers win 12 games; Luna leads team with 12 goals

Addison Trail boys soccer coach Ryan Dini wasn’t kidding when he said his team accomplished a lot this season.

The Blazers finished the season 12-72 overall, finished 3-3 in the tough West Suburban Conference Gold Division and advanced to a Class 3A regional championship game.

Addison Trail opened the playoffs with a 2-1 victory in two overtimes against Wheaton-Warrenville South. “It was a very well-played game by both teams,” said Dini.

“The highlight for us was to stay with the game plan and find a way to score before the end of the second overtime. We showed how well in shape we were with continuing to make runs from the win position. Our players kept up the pace. That was the difference in the game and we found a way to score.”

Sophomore forward Jonathan Hernandez finished a cross from senior Fernando Alvarado to win the game.

The Blazers then dropped a 2-0 decision to Glenbard North in the regional championship game.

“I think it was the overall experience for our team to play in a game of that magnitude,” said Dini. “We have 14 out of 21 varsity players returning next season and seven are starters. In the end, we were beat by a better team. Our players learned a lot from this game. After the match I talked with a lot of our juniors about taking the next step next season and focusing on what we need to improve on as individuals and as a team. I look for a really motivated team coming back next year.”

Junior forward Enrique Luna led Addison Trail with 12 goals and seven assists. He

earned all-conference and honorable mention all-sectional accolades. Hernandez finished with eight goals and 11 assists.

“Jonathan scored double the goals this year than he did during his freshman season on varsity,” said Dini. “He has great size, speed and strength and is one of the best sophomores in the area. Enrique had 12 goals and is very fast and can dribble in tight spaces.”

Junior midfielder Tom Kania had eight goals and six assists, while senior midfielder Damian Zielinski had seven goals and six assists and earned all-conference honors.

Junior defender Uriel Martinez had two goals and earned all-conference and allsectional honors. Senior goalie Cosme Garcia had seven shutouts, a 1.26 goals-against average and an 82% save percentage.

Dini also was impressed with how his team fared playing a tough schedule. “The team had a winning record against excellent competition,” said Dini, who noted Addison Trail also placed eight players on the academic all-conference team. “Our team defense was very good with seven shutouts and only allowing two or more goals in a game five times out of 21 games. We also were able to take second in our eight-team tournament and make it to the regional final.”

Addison Trail moved up from sixth to fourth in the WSC Gold this season.

“We were able to execute our scouting reports on teams we played and we saw some good plays on points of emphasis during game play,” said Dini.

Dini is looking forward to the 2016 season.

“We accomplished a lot this year and are bringing a lot of talent back next season,” he said. “Our goal is to finish in the top three in the conference and win a regional championship next season. I’m excited to see these players grow on the field and off the field and compete at a high level next year. The future is bright for Addison Trail soccer.”

Willowbrook cross-country teams compete at sectional meets

The Willowbrook boys crosscountry team finished 12th at the recent Class 3A Hinsdale Central sectional.

Senior Marco Martinez finished 49th with a time of 16:32.79 to lead the Warriors.

Freshman Matt Caron was 74th with a time of 17:02.95. Senior Chris Turek finished 77th with a time of 17:11.55. Senior Henry Dahl placed 83rd with a time of 17:28.19. Sophomore Michael Isaacson was 88th with a time

of 17:38.89. Junior Jacob Christiansen was 94th with a time of 17:46.10, while junior Casey King took 113th with a time of 18:11.79.

Willowbrook girls cross country The Willowbrook girls crosscountry team took 16th place at the recent Class 3A Hinsdale Central sectional.

Freshman Victoria Palma was Willowbrook’s first finisher. She placed 85th with a time of 21:15.47. Junior Grace

Guthrie was 96th with a time of 21:39.07. Sophomore Catherine Pegler was 97th with a time of 21:42.85. Sophomore Angela Klingelhoffer took 102nd with a time of 22:00.12. In a 25-1, 25-5 win over Chicago Prosser, Danielle McNamara had seven kills and one dig.

“It was tough for the girls to process the loss to York, but we reiterated to them how great of a season we had,” said Styler. “We went from 9-27 last year to 22-14 this year. That’s a tremendous turnaround playing a tough schedule. We played in the Lake Park tournament that has 12 teams. We finished last—12th place last year.

This year we won it and that’s a testament to the hard work of these kids. It’s great for them to see the improvement not only subjectively but we got better just by looking at the raw numbers. Going from last to first in a tournament is tremendous.”

Addison Trail graduates seniors Jessica Mell, Nicole Pudlo and defensive specialist Carla Muell. Mell and Pudlo are the Blazers’ starting middle blockers.

“We return 10 varsity players next year,” said Styler.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic about the progress we made this year but we think we can still get better with the group we have coming back.”

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team’s seasonlong turnaround reached the regional championship round.

The Blazers lost 25-13, 25-13 to York in the finals of the Class 4A Addison Trail regional.

Addison Trail finished the season with a 22-14 record and shared the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title with Downers Grove South. The Blazers were 9-27 a year ago.

Addison Trail reached the regional final by defeating Leyden 25-10, 25-22 in the semifinals.

“We got into a groove early in the first set against Leyden and pulled away,” said Blazers coach Dan Styler. “At the end we were serving well and we broke down their servereceive. We had a 10-point run at the end of the first set

and we had a ton of momentum going. In the second set we didn’t play our best but we executed down the stretch and made some great hustle plays that sealed the win for us.”

Styler said his team ran into a strong York squad in the title match. “York is a tough matchup,” he said. “I was very impressed by their play. “They were one of the best ball-control teams we played all year. On the season we averaged just shy of 10 aces per match. We had none against York. They are a fantastic ball-control team and that definitely helped the point differential on their end.

We had some kills against them, but they played well and gashed us with several scoring runs. They deserved to win. They are a fantastic team.”

Styler cited strong play in the two regional games from Keara Schmitt and Sarah Petrbok. “Both Keara and Sarah played fantastic in both matches,” he said.

Styler said the loss to York was tough, but it doesn’t diminish what the Blazers accomplished in 2015.

ELMHURST – Edward Hospital, in Naperville, and Elmhurst Hospital will each host a Diabetes Awareness Fair on Saturday, November 14, 9 a.m.

The Fairs, in conjunction with National Diabetes Awareness Month, will be held at: Edward Hospital, Heart Hospital Lobby, 801 S. Washington St. in Naperville Elmhurst Hospital, East Lobby, 155 E. Brush Hill Rd. The Fairs will offer screenings, including blood pressure, BMI (body mass index), diabetes finger-stick (requires a 12-hour fast) and foot assessment, and DiabetesAware, an online screening tool which checks your risk for diabetes.

Outlook: IC Catholic Prep is on a major roll. Since losing its season-opener to Kankakee McNamara, the Knights have won nine games in a row, seven of which they have scored 40 or more points in. The Knights have been equally stellar on defense, allowing 10 or less points in six games this season. Elmwood-Brimfield won the Prairieland Conference Blue Division with a record of 5-0 this season. The Trojans played five teams with winning regular-season records this season (5-0) and have put up 40 or more points in six games this season including 77 (in a 77-64 win over Farmington) and 63 in a win over South Fulton co-op. Where is Elmwood-Brimfield you might ask? Elmwood High School (enrollment 199) is located near Peoria, while Brimfield High School (enrollment 215) is located about 10 miles from Elmwood High. The two schools co-op for football. The Trojans will have a three-hour, 185-mile trek to Elmhurst from Elmwood High.

On September 8, 1989, Father Conway started the celebration of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad Del Cobre, Patroness of Cuba, at Saint Alexis Catholic Church, Bensenville. Years later, he was invited to Sacred Heart Parish in Melrose Park

to preside over the celebration of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad. From that moment on, the Cubans have invited Father Conway to officiate the Eucharistic celebration every year for the past 26 years.
