Unemployment rate drops, vacancy rates rise in County According to a report from Choose DuPage, the County’s unemployment rate decreased slightly from 4.5% in July to 4.4% in August. DuPage continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the region, and is lower than both the state of Illinois (5.5%) and the United States (5%).

Office vacancy rates in DuPage have increased slightly from 16.8% in August to 17.4% in September.

The County’s industrial vacancy rate has also increased, inching from 4.8% in August to 5% in September.

DuPage continues to have a significantly lower industrial vacancy rate compared to all other counties in Northeastern Illinois.

In a special ceremony on Oct. 22 in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College, the institution inaugurated its 14th president, Dr. Troy D. VanAken, Keeping with the theme of the event Imagining Elmhurst, President VanAken described the College’s strengths and how they would enable the institution to not only imagine ambitious plans for the future, but also to make them a

reality.

To make his point, he announced $2.5 million in gifts and commitments to Elmhurst College from three trustees.

The ceremony began with representatives from the faculty, students, community and alumni offering greetings and words of welcome to President VanAken.

The production by Lyric Unlimited is dedicated to education, community engagement and new artistic initiatives to educate and entertain students with little or no experience with the operatic art form.

Reminder: Don’t just follow the President’s race

As the Nov. 8 Election draws closer and closer, the Independent hopes to share with its readers the information they need to know as our country, as well as our state and county, decide who will serve in the upcoming terms of office.

Early voting began October 24 and will continue to Nov. 5. If you’d rather miss the rush on Nov. 8 or if you plan to be out of town, there are several places to vote early. Check with the DuPage Election Commission at dupageco.org/election/ to find a place closest to you. You do NOT have to vote early in your own community, you may early vote anywhere it is being offered, regardless of your place of residence.

Don’t forget to bring ID to the polling booth – early or day-of.

A reminder: It’s easy to get caught up in the Presidential election, especially this year when there has been so much drama back and forth between the candidates. Just remember, there are people representing you at the State level and on the County Board and you’ll want to pay just as much attention to those elections as the national. Look at your most recent property tax bill and you’ll see where your local tax dollars are going.

If you wish to learn more about an individual candidate, do a Google search of that candidate’s name, as most have their own web sites with information about their policies and priorities.

AT, WB Interact Clubs present to Rotary Club of Villa Park On Oct. 25, members of the Addison Trail and Willowbrook Interact Clubs presented to the Rotary Club of Villa Park during the club’s regular meeting.

The student representatives were seniors Leslie Tolentino and Diana Graciano from Addison Trail and seniors Allison Letson and Valbona Shameti from Willowbrook. They spoke about the mission of Interact Club, explaining activities in which they participate such as volunteering with DuPage PADS homeless shelter at First Presbyterian Church of Itasca, Salvation Army bell ringing and the Salt Creek Cleanup/ The Interact Clubs hold fundraisers and special events, including: Kermes: Addison Trail will host its third annual Kermes (Latino food festival) on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school. The event will feature traditional Latino dishes, as well as live entertainment (dancing and a disc jockey), a split-the-pot, an auction, raffles and family-friendly activities. Admission is free, and dinner tickets are $6 each. Proceeds will go

Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Throughout October, Willowbrook hosted a “Purple Out” in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October 1981 by the coalition. The Day of Unity is celebrated on the first Monday in October. All are invited to wear purple to show support.

Interact Club is focused on community service and helping others. The clubs at Addison Trail and Willowbrook offer students an opportunity to meet new people and interact with their peers and nature. The clubs are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Villa Park, and at the end of the presentation, the Rotary Club gave a monetary donation to the Addison Trail Interact Club and the Willowbrook Interact Club. Police Reports Area Police Departments recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Addison Oct. 27 • Sarah L. Barstatis, 46, of Hanover Park, was arrested near Greenbriar and Lake at around 9:28 p.m. and charged with illegal transportation of alcohol and driving while license suspended.

• Pablo T. Soriano, 37, of Addison, was arrested in the 300 block of W. Fullerton Ave. at around 11:10 p.m. and charged with battery. Police said Soriano held the victim to the ground, struck him in the face and kicked him in the leg and knee.

Oct. 25 • Walter A. Haner, 60, of Chicago, was arrested in the 700 block of Belden Avenue at around 7:28 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said Haner yelled profanities toward fellow employees.

• Charles A. Keefer, 46, of Ad-

dison, was arrested at around 2:10 a.m. Police said Keefer had a warrant out of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department for violating an order of protection.

Oct. 24 • Autumn L. Biars, 19, of Bensenville, was arrested at a store in the 1000 block of N. Rohlwing Road at around 9:14 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

• A 30-year-old Addison man was arrested at around 10 p.m. Police said the man had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for domestic battery.

Oct. 23 • Deonte Collins, 26, of Chicago, was arrested in the 300 block of W. Lake St. at around 9:58 p.m. and charged with battery. Police said Collins ran up to a victim and attempted to punch the victim from behind.

• Jorge Magana-Laurel, 42, of Addison, was arrested in the 200 block of E. Oak St. at around 12:31 a.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said the suspect made a lewd and inappropriate remark toward a victim.

• A 23-year-old Addison man was arrested in the 800 block of College Blvd. at around 1:20 a.m. and charged with domestic battery. Police said the man placed his hands around the victim’s neck and choked her, pulled her hair, and pushed her.

Villa Park Oct. 22 Battery was reported at The Odeum at around 12:47 a.m. Police said several unknown males were having a confrontation in the parking lot when one unknown suspect sprayed six males with pepper spray and left the scene.

Oct. 21 • Nicholas L. Alanis, 26, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 500 block of W. Division at around 10:40 p.m. and charged with assault.

• Kayli A. Balchowicz, 21, of Lombard, was arrested in the 400 block of E. North Ave. at around 10:53 a.m. and charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage.

• Retail theft was reported at a store at around 1:25 p.m. Police said an unknown female suspect removed merchandise from the displays and left without paying for items.

Oct. 18 • Rose E. Bergh, 20, of Villa Park, was arrested near Addison and Elm at around 9:21 p.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and of drug paraphernalia.

• Theft was reported in the 200 block of W. North Ave. at around 5:50 p.m. Police said an unknown male suspect stole $92 from a restaurant in a quick change scam.

Oct. 17 • Robert J. Kaprak, 24, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 100 block of S. Cornell at around 1:12 a.m.

• Michael A. Taylor, 39 (last known residence: Villa Park), was arrested at a motel at around 9 a.m.

• Police said an unknown suspect stole a semi-trailer was reported stolen from a business parking lot in the 1000 block of N. Villa between Oct. 15 and Oct. 17.

• Criminal damage was reported in the 100 block of W. Home at around 8:42 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect shattered the glass from the door of a business.

Oct. 16 • A 21-year-old Villa Park woman was arrested in the 1000 block of N. Harvard between 11:13 and 11:45 p.m. and charged with two counts of domestic battery.

• A 45-year-old man from Joplin, Mo., and a 23-year-old woman from Webb City, Mo., were arrested at a motel at around 4:52 a.m. Both were charged with two counts of domestic battery.

• Residential burglary was reported in the 1-100 block of W. Terrace.

Police said that between 4 p.m. Oct. 13 and 5 p.m. Oct. 16, an unknown suspect gained entry into an apartment through a window, stealing cigarettes and prescription medication.

Oct. 15 • Criminal damage was reported near Park and Ardmore. Police said an unknown suspect kicked an apartment door open and damaged it.

• Three male juveniles, all from Villa Park, were arrested near the Prairie Path and Myrtle at around 8:55 p.m. One was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct, and the other two were charged with disorderly conduct.

Additionally, Christopher Torpe, 18, of Lombard, was arrested at the same time an charged with disorderly conduct.

Oct. 12 Mya L. Gillespie Jones, 20, of Villa Park, was arrested at a store at around 1:46 p.m. and charged with retail theft.

Oct. 8 Fraud occurred at a bank at around 5:33 a.m. Police said an unknown male suspect put a camera and skimming device over the credit card reader of an ATM. At 4:15 p.m. on the same day, a different unknown male suspect returned to the bank and reportedly removed the camera and skimmer from the ATM.

Alumnus, Trustee Weigand to give $2.25 million to Center For Professional Excellence Elmhurst College alumnus and longtime Trustee Russell Weigand (Class of 1964) and his wife, Joyce Slone Weigand, will give $2.25 million to the College to continue and enhance the work of the Center for Professional Excellence.

Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken announced the major gift to the College, as well as commitments from two other trustees, during his inauguration ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 22.

“The College has no truer or more steadfast friends than Russ and Joyce Weigand, and their gift exemplifies philanthropy of the highest order because it shows their lasting commitment to our students and their success,” VanAken said.

President VanAken announced additional gifts and commitments on October 22, including a $150,000 pledge from alumnus and Trustee Edward Momkus (Class of 1974) and his wife, Betsy Goltermann; and a $100,000 gift from Trustee Hugh McLean and his wife, Mary Beth. Both donations will support student scholarships.

“I am deeply grateful to Ed, Betsy, Hugh and Mary Beth for the dedication and generosity they have shown to Elmhurst College,” VanAken added. “Their gifts will support our students’ goals and dreams for years to come.”

The $2.25 million leadership commitment from the Weigands will create an endowment for the Center for Professional Excellence. In honor of their gift, the College will name the program the Russell G. Weigand Center for Professional Excellence.

Life is a series of events, and they seem to be multiplying.

I’m not referring to events like loading the dishwasher or combing your hair or walking the dog. I’m talking Events – the ones with a cap-

ital E that are cause for celebration.

District 88 participates in Options Fair On Oct. 18, Willowbrook and Addison Trail participated in an Options Fair, which was a free re-

gional post-secondary planning fair that provided information about services and resources available for

students with an IEP or a 504 Plan.

More than 500 people attended the event, and more than 30 universities and colleges, as well as multiple outside agencies, were on site to discuss post-high school and transitional options. Participants were able to hear presentations about the following topics.

Addison Trail boys soccer team reaches sectional final Blazers finish with 22 wins—best postseason finish in 16 years

Willowbrook football team wins first playoff game in 16 years

The long road trip for the Willowbrook football team was well worth the effort.

The Warriors made the trek down to Quincy High School and came away with a come-from-behind 34-13 victoryover the Blue Devils in the first round of the Class 7A state playoffs.

Willowbrook won the game when it scored 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Kevon Dobbins erased a 13-12 deficit when he returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Jack Jessen followed with a rushing touchdown and Jacob Entwhistle returned an interception for a touchdown.

The game was 0-0 after the first quarter and Willowbrook took a 6-3 lead into halftime via a Jon Kelso touchdown. A Quincy field goal tied the game at 6-6 heading into the fourth quarter and Quincy went up 13-6 before Willowbrook mounted its comeback that started with the first of Jessen’s two rushing touchdowns.

Willowbrook is the No. 23 seed in the 32-team 7A bracket, while Quincy was the No. 10 seed.

The win was Willowbrook’s first in the playoffs since the 1990 season when it defeated Maine South in Class 5A action, snapping a string of 10 straight playoff appearances without a win. It’s the sixth time in school history Willowbrook has won an openinground playoff game.

The win against Quincy means Willowbrook will come home either Friday or Saturday to face No. 7 seed Glenbrook North (9-1). It’s Willowbrook’s first home playoff game since 1994.

The Warriors’ opponent scored a 10-point win in its playoff opener. Glenbrook North, located in Northbrook, tied for the Central Suburban Conference North Division title at 4-1. The Spartans lone loss came in Week 8 to a 6-3 Vernon Hills team at home (26-25). Of the team’s eight regular-season wins, only four came against teams with winning records (Wheeling at 5-4, Highland Park at 7-2, Deerfield at 5-4 and Vernon Hills at 6-3). It’s other four wins were against teams with records of 2-7, 3-6, 1-8 and 4-5. Glenbrook North has scored 40 or more points in five games. The 17-point playoff output in the first round was its lowest of the season.

Up next: The winner of this game faces either No. 15 Glenbard North (8-2) or No. 2 East St. Louis Lincoln (100) in the state quarterfinals next week. If Willowbrook wins this game, it will either travel to Glenbard North (each team has hosted once and Glenbard North would be the higher seed) or host East St. Louis (which has hosted both of its games and Willowbrook will have hosted only once).

The Addison Trail boys soccer team saw its magical season come to a close after a tough 3-1 loss to Conant in the Class 3A Glenbard East sectional-championship game.

Addison Trail finished the season 22-2 and advanced to a sectional title game for the first time since 2000.

The Blazers’ earlier regional title was their first as well since 2000.

The Blazers and Conant played to a 0-0 stalemate until late in the first half when the Cougars went up 1-0.

“They scored in the last minute of the half,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “We had a mishap in the back and that led to a breakaway.”

Conant quickly made it 2-0 early in the second half.

“They scored two minutes into the half. It was a tough couple minutes for us,” said Dini. “We’re down 2-0 and then we got down 3-0 with 30 minutes left. We put a lot of pressure on them in the second half, but we got going way too late.”

Enrique Luna scored Addison Trail’s lone goal. It was his 27th of the year. Luna earned all-state honors for his performance this season.

Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming team takes seventh at Titan Relays Haake wins 100; 200 medley relay team third in competitive field

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op girls swimming team placed seventh at the recent Glenbrook South Titan Relays event.

AT-Willowbrook was eighth in the 200 butterfly relay with a time of 2:12.19. That team included Madison Walsh, Gabriella Panegasser, Michelle Ramirez and Grace Roucka.

AT-Willowbrook was sixth in the backstroke relay with a time of 2:07.59 with Anna Christiansen, Isabelle Hernandez, Ramirez and Elissa Haake.

In the breaststroke relay, AT-Willowbrook placed fifth with a time of 2:26.80. That team included Roucka, Brianna Richardson, Savannah Catalano and Annalise Morrone.

Haake won the 100 with a time of 53.67, well ahead of the secondplace time of 55.00. Ramirez took ninth in another section of the 100 with a time of 1:00.35.

AT-Willowbrook was seventh in

one heat of the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:26.35. That group included Emy Hayes, Ryley Goles, Walsh and Sara Whiting. AT-Willowbrook also was seventh in the other section with Paul, Richardson, Panegasser and Kaitlyn Fox clocking in at 2:23.11.

AT-Willowbrook was fifth in the 400 medley at 4:34.44 with Christiansen, Morrone, Roucka and Klea Gjonaj.

Morrone was 10th in the 50 with a time of 26.69.

AT-Willowbrook was fifth in the 400 relay in 4:46.33 with Whiting, Goles, Hayes and Walsh—all freshmen. In the other section, ATWillowrook was seventh with Paul, Panegasser, Richardson and Fox swimming 4:38.63.

AT-Willowbrook was third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:59.78 with Christiansen, Morrone, Roucka and Haake.

AT-Willowbrook took fourth in another section of the 400 relay with a time of 3:59.43 with Haake, Catalano, Gjonaj and Ramirez swimming 3:59.43.

Haake took second in another section of the 100 with a time of 1:02.00, while Morrone was eighth in another section of the 50 with a time of 38.00.

Fenton boys soccer team advances to sectional final

The Fenton boys soccer team got itself on a postseason roll.

The Bison won a Class 2A regional title with a pair of wins and then won their sectional semifinal match to advance to a Class 2A sectional final.

In regional play, Fenton scored a 2-1 win over Wheaton St. Francis in the semifinals. Angel Barriga and Patryk Bryk each had a goal.

Fenton then scored a 1-0 win over Marmion on penalty kicks. The two

teams played to a 0-0 draw through two overtime periods. Fenton won the penalty-kick phase by a convincing 4-1 count.

Goalie Abel Carrere made two saves during the penalty-kick phrase.

“It’s always special to advance in the state tournament,” Fenton coach Jim Johns said late last week.

“It’s always a difficult task. Against Marmion both teams tried their best to score. It comes down to that in the state tournament. It becomes more of a defensive game. The games get more difficult. Everybody is hustling and giving it all they have.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team opened the playoffs with a 255, 25-10 win over Chicago Noble/ TW Speer in quarterfinal action of the Class 4A York regional in Elmhurst.

In the win against Noble/Speer, Bri Hoffmann had five digs. Payton Ceh had one kill, six aces and five digs. Olivia Pennebaker had eight kills, one ace and two digs. Grace Chantos had two digs. Stephanie Ebeling had one kill. Emily Ligocki had two kills, one ace, 10 assists and four digs. Jamie Chiappetta had four kills and seven aces. Marissa Marcello had two aces and seven assists, while Milena Sogura had six kills.

Willowbrook had 17 service aces as a team.

Willowbrook then dropped a 2520, 25-20 decision to Chicago Jones in the semifinals of the York regional.

The Knights registered a 49-8 victory over St. Joe-Ogden in a firstround 3A playoff matchup at Lewis Stadium in Elmhurst.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 10-0 overall. The top-seeded

Knights will host No. 8 seed PaxtonBuckley-Loda in a second-round game either Friday or Saturday. PBL (9-1) drubbed Aledo Mercer County 50-2 in first-round action.

reception. Sanders, Eatman and Saunders are juniors or younger.

Kemon Reese, a sophomore, led the team in tackles with 23. Chris Johnson had 16 tackles and one tackle for loss.

Matt Sutton and Robert Vitek each had nine tackles. Matt Jordan registered two quarterback sacks. Reese had one quarterback sack.

Jordan and Saunders each recovered a fumble. Eatman caused a fumble, while Johnson and Rowell each had a pass deflection.

Upcoming in the next few weeks are Plan your Epitaph Day (otherwise known as National Preparedness Day or Dooms Day.) Coincidentally, National Cappuccino Day and Harvey Wallbanger Day fall within the same 24-hour period, so I guess we’ll have to make a beverage choice. Either that or do a lot of drinking. Have a Bad Day Day is followed by Absurdity Day, which was created as a day to recall and note some of the totally and absolutely absurd things in history, in our country and in our lives.

Given the current political climate, that shouldn’t be too difficult.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a good celebration. Party like it’s National Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine Day, because it is! I can and will celebrate like its National Square Dance Day or even National Waiting for the Barbarians Day. But I’ll do so in moderation.

National Moderation Day – now there’s an Event I could embrace.

And I would. If it existed. It doesn’t.

At least not yet. Give it time. (National Patience Day will be here in about a week.)

The Bison recently won their own Class 2A Fenton sectional and thus will compete in Saturday’s

Willowbrook girls cross country The Willowbrook girls crosscountry team placed 19th at the recent Class 3A Marist sectional in Midlothian.

Sophomore Victoria Palma was 73rd in a time of 20:11.14. Junior Lydia Bauernfreund was 122nd in 21:31.79.
