NAPF holds inaugural awards banquet By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ADDISON INDEPENDENT
Led by Executive Director and Founder Don Ortale, the National Association of Park Foundations gathered at The Empress on Tuesday, Nov. 20 for its first-ever awards banquet. Among the honorees was the Parks & Recreation Foundation of the Addison Park District who was NAPF’s Inaugural Grant Assist Recipient. In addition, Don Jessen was presented with the Ron Lehman Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his 45 years of service to Parks & Recreation in Addison, across the state and the nation. Other honorees included the Parks Foundations of Carol Stream, Clarendon Hills, Channahon, Rockford and Wheaton. The WT Engineering, Design & Consulting Group was honored as Sponsor of the Year. Other event sponsors were Williams Architects, the Foundation for Sustainable Parks & Recreation (FSPR), Knutte & Associates (K&A), CPAs, Grassmats USA, and Kirby Built. The emcee for the evening was Addison’s own Don of Sports, Don Figarelli, and Ortale himself, who is an Addison resident.
Daughter speaks on behalf of Jesse Prior to the introduction of Don Jessen, his daughter Suzanne addressed the audience of about 75 guests, speaking for herself and her brothers Mike and Steve. She shared that her father also had nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild due in three weeks. Suzanne said wherever they went as a family, her dad always knew someone. “We were even at Disneyland and one of us said, ‘hey, where’s Dad?’” she said. “Sure enough, he ran into someone he knew! I mean, it just happened all the time ever since we were little, but now [that we’re older], we realize, how cool is that?” Suzanne went on to say she was sure her father had changed many people’s lives through his works in Parks & Recreation. “I can’t thank you enough for honoring my dad in this way,” she said. “I know it is well-deserved because his dedication has been beyond anything we could imagine.” Ron Lehman presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Jessen, who then took the microphone. “I couldn’t do it without my wife Dolores and my family,” he said, “and I couldn’t do it without Don Ortale either! This is a great organization and I will support it continued success in the future.”

A step back in time
Boy Scout Troop 242 recently participated in an overnight outing on the USS Cobia located in Manitowoc, Wis. Friends of scouts and guests from Lombard Cub Scout Pack 202 also attended. Boys were temporarily enlisted in the Navy, toured the entire vessel, learned to navigate the ship, and slept overnight in bunks on the World War II sub.
