District 4 Schools announce new superintendent

The Addison School District 4 Board of Education has announced its approval of an Agreement with a new Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2022. The current Superintendent, John

Langton, will retire at the end of this 2021-22 school year after serving the school district for 26 years. After considering more than 60 applicants, the ASD4 Board of Education has introduced Dr. Nick Sutton as their Superintendent for the 2022-23 school year.

Dr. Sutton has worked extensively in the field of education for his entire career.

Graduating from Western Illinois

University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education, he began his education career in the classroom as a 7th grade Language Arts teacher. Dr. Sutton continued to develop through a graduate degree in Education Leadership from Western Illinois University. He also completed a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Western Illinois University and then completed the Chief School Business Official

Endorsement from the University of Illinois. Dr. Sutton was a middle school principal of two different schools, served as Superintendent of the Stark County School District 100, and most recently is the Superintendent of the Sandridge School District 172 in Chicago Heights. The district looks forward to Dr. Sutton sharing his experiences in our Addison community!

When asked about his thoughts of

the community and Addison School District 4, Dr. Sutton shared, “Addison School District 4 has an outstanding reputation as a school district and community,” Dr. Sutton said. “I am honored and humbled to become a part of it. Bond set for each of two accused of burglarizing Oak Brook home geview Police Departments at this time. It is alleged that while at the Oak Brook home, officers found the home’s rear sliding glass door damaged and the interior of the residence ransacked. It further alleged that the defendants stole personal items, including a handgun, from the residence. The following day, the Lyons Police Department received a call from an individual who was behind the alleged chase when she saw something spark on the ground behind the fleeing vehicle. When she inspected her car the following morning, she found a handgun lodged in her vehicle that allegedly matched the gun stolen from the Oak Brook residence the prior evening.

“Residential burglary can have a devastating effect not only on the victim of the crime, but also on the entire community,” Berlin said. “A family’s home is their sanctuary, providing safety and security to all within. Any violation of the protection a home provides will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force and effect of the law.”

The next court appearance for both men is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 1, for arraignment in front of Judge Kinsella.

An investigation into the matter continues. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hinsdale Police Department at (630) 789-7070.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

Pedal Power deemed successful

On Saturday, Nov. 13, “Pedal Power” hosted its annual charity collection of gently-used, working bicycles at the former Stemples Cycle Center location at 494 Spring Road. The Elmhurst effort brought in 185 bikes which will go to many deserving kids who have never had a bike. In addition to Elmhurst, Pedal Power held collections at eight other sites throughout the Chicago area.

On Wednesday, Nov. 17, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police James Kruger announced that bond had been set for two Chicago men accused of burglarizing an Oak Brook residence. Peter Miller, 33, and Michael Miller, 25, both appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge John Kinsella set bond at $300,000 with 10% to apply for Peter Miller and $250,000 with 10% to apply for Michael Miller.

Both men have been charged with one count of Residential Burglary (Class 1 Felony).

On Monday, Nov. 15, at approximately 6:38 p.m., through the course of ongoing investigations into more than two dozen forced-entry residential burglaries to single family homes, the NORTAF Burglary Task Force (North Regional Major Crime Task Force) identified a suspicious vehicle parked outside an Oak Brook home located on Windsor Drive for approximately six minutes. Upon their arrival at the Oak Brook home, the vehicle allegedly fled the area leading authorities on a high-speed chase on eastbound I-290. The vehicle was allegedly able to flee from officers but an Illinois State Police helicopter tracked the vehicle to a location on 74th Street in Burbank. It is alleged that Peter Miller and Michael Miller along with two unidentified individuals exited the vehicle at this location and that Peter Miller and Michael Miller were taken into custody by the Burbank and Brid-

Pediatric COVID-19 vaccine now available The coronavirus has been threatening the health of children and families, sending hundreds of children to the hospital and keeping millions out of school during this pandemic. Now parents can breathe a collective sigh of relief.

The Food and Drug Administra-

tion (FDA) has granted emergency use authorization (EUA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for young children ages 5-11, bringing 25 million families one step closer to a sense of normalcy.

The Pfizer vaccine is currently the only COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use in this younger age group.

The vaccine has been FDA-approved for ages 16 and older and continues to be available through EUA for ages 12-15. The other COVID-19 vaccines, Moderna and Janssen (J&J),

To study the vaccine in younger children, a clinical trial was conducted in which 3,100 children ages 5-11 safely received the Pfizer vaccine, and no serious side effects were reported. The vaccine was found to be safe, well-tolerated and 90.7% effective in preventing COVID-19 in children in this age group.

How does the vaccine work for kids?

The Pfizer vaccine is an mRNA vaccine. It contains a portion of mRNA that sends the body’s cells instructions to make a harmless piece of spike protein, the button on the surface of the SARS-CoV2 virus, initiating an immune response that teaches the body how to fight the virus if exposed.

The material never enters the nucleus of the cell, which is where DNA is kept, so the vaccine does not change or interact with DNA in any way. Once it has initiated an immune response, the vaccine itself breaks down rapidly and is cleared from the body. The vaccine does not contain the live virus that causes COVID-19 and cannot cause infection with COVID-19.

Addison Art Guild hosts award reception for Frida Kahlo exhibition The Addison Art Guild held the reception for their annual members’ exhibit at The Addison Center for the Arts gallery on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 11. The artists and their friends, neighbors and family enjoyed light refreshments and conversation while viewing the show.

This year’s guest judge Lisa Dziuricsko, curator of Marmion Academy in Aurora, awarded several prizes for the art works on exhibit.

This year the Guild celebrated the memory of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo with a special exhibit devoted to her art and life. John Keeley of Bloomingdale won a special Frida Kahlo award for his oil painting, “Frida at Home.”

Lisa Lucaccioni of Addison took the First Place ribbon for “Titus and Brutus,” a charming oil painting of father and son male lions from the Brookfield Zoo. Another First Place ribbon went to Irma Pocius for an alcohol ink abstract painting called “Fascination.”

The Best in Show ribbon was awarded to Julie Mars of Roselle for “Honeymoon Panopticon.” Second Place ribbons went to Tania Blanco of Naperville and Elke Simmons of

Addison. Janice Dunteman and Annette Leiber of Addison received Honorable Mentions ribbons.

The Guild usually meets once a month with a demonstration of different artistic techniques. In addition to monthly meetings, the AAG has two exhibitions per year. Currently, the spring 2022 show in the rotunda is tentative due to public health policies, but will be announced at another venue, if necessary.

School and Addison Trail. Wayne served in the U.S. Marines and was employed by United Airlines for 30 years. He loved children and spent years officiating youth basketball and working with kids to teach them teamwork and improve their skills.

Wayne passed away in 2016 after battling colon cancer. Since that time, his family has hosted the Wayne’s Pond Golf Memorial Tournament each year to honor and celebrate his life. All proceeds from the event are distributed to local children’s organizations or groups.

More than a decade ago, I arrived in Shanghai to become a visiting professor at one of its leading universities. The day after my flight to that bustling city of 28 million, I was walking down a leafy side street on a Saturday morning. I noticed small children in cute uniforms walking toward a low-slung building. The Monday following, I asked my host professor what was

going on.

“Oh, they were going to school.

Our youngsters attend school until noon every Saturday.” And, I would

add, for one more hour of instruction each week day than in the U.S.

Based on my six decades of observation of rural, small town as well as low-income urban settings, there has been a woeful cultural inattention to the importance of educational achievement. We must put classroom goals on the same lofty level of importance as crossing the Friday night football goal line.

Low-income families on our many welfare programs should be asked, in return for government supports, to improve their parenting skills and attention to their kids’ school effort.

I appreciate that our society has been going through much the past year and more, with the pandemic.

But, just as England slept for a decade while Hitler rearmed the Third Reich, America seems to be asleep while China and other dynamic Asian nations seek to race past us.

Earlier this year, I wrote about forgiveness.

Forgiveness gets a lot of brain time in forgiveness circles. Many believe that before we can move forward, we need to forgive. That wasn’t the topic of my previous column.

I didn’t write about our need to forgive others. Quite the opposite.

In my humble opinion we don’t have the duty or obligation to forgive others. That end of forgiveness only bogs us down.

If we are fretting about whether or not to forgive someone then we are ignoring our own need for growth—except in one critical circumstance which involves offering not only forgiveness, but grace, to the one person we often judge most harshly: ourself.

I’ve struggled with this quite a bit in the last year. I think it’s probably natural when you walked beside someone during a terrible and fatal illness which left you still here and them not.

It’s probably natural; But it doesn’t feel that way.

It feels wrong and sad, but second guessing ourselves happens in numerous life situations: after a divorce, car accident, with addiction, failed relationship, job loss, death and the list goes on.

It’s hard not to wonder if there might have been something— anything—more that you could have done to help, to advocate, to support, to change the outcome.

That, my friends, is a haunting thought to live with.

Many people live with similar thoughts, and I’m so sorry for that—in my own life and in the life of anyone who struggles with these feelings.

We are so hard on ourselves.

And it shouldn’t be that way.

That’s where forgiveness comes in.

If you blame yourself for something in your past, the blame does nothing to right the wrong. It does nothing to help the situation that happened and is (quite honestly) in the past. There’s

nothing any of us can do to change yesterday. Reliving it does nothing to change any circumstance. It most often only rubs salt in the wound.

It can be a harsh cycle: reliving and reviewing and wondering and wishing the outcome was different.

It can be a harsh cycle: blaming ourselves for something that has no blame.

Therein lies the truth in this whole conundrum.

We beat ourselves up for myriad things in life. For things beyond our control. For things we didn’t plan or never would have wanted. For things that just happened, despite our best intentions. We worry and we fret and it’s time to stop.

It’s time to understand and acknowledge honestly that we are all doing the best we can with what we have. It’s time to forgive the one person who most needs our forgiving, move forward and offer the unconditional love that he or she so desperately needs.

The first step in loving others and the world around you is loving yourself. And that often starts with forgiveness, for your shortcomings, for your past, for being human.

Because none of us is without faults.

The sooner we see and acknowledge this in ourselves, the sooner we can see and acknowledge it in others.

And that, my friends, might just put us one step closer to the truth.

Be kind, especially to yourself.

You deserve it. Today, and everyday.

Addison Trail names November recipient of 88’s Best recognition Mateo Gomez (pictured above, at right, with Addison Trail Principal Jack Andrews) has been named as Addison Trail’s November recipient of 88’s Best recognition for his highly improved performance.

Gomez, a senior, was recognized during the Nov. 15 District 88 Board of Education meeting. To watch his 88’s Best presentation, click on the video above.

Gomez came to the U.S. three and a half years ago, knowing no English and having to adjust to a new language and culture. Today, he is taking the most difficult and challenging Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses at Addison Trail. Gomez emigrated from Colombia with his family at the beginning of what should have been his eighth-grade year. But a translation mistake with his transcript led to him being enrolled at Addison Trail instead, at the age of 13. Gomez said his first goal was to learn English, as he knew that would be step one on his pathway to success, and he worked toward that goal relentlessly. Gomez added his EL teachers inspired him and saw potential that he didn’t see in himself.

He also reminds students that in the end, it’s up to them to succeed.

Academic achievements: • Earned a grade of A in every course he has taken • Earned the Literacy Department’s Achievement Award his second semester at Addison Trail • Exited Addison Trail’s EL program by the end of his sophomore year • Enrolled in several AP courses his junior year Involvement at Addison Trail: • Vice President of National Honor Society (NHS) • Vice President of Student Council • Lieutenant Governor of Key Club • Host of Blazer News (Addison Trail’s student-run news channel) • Member of Italian Club • Member of Theatre • Member of Addison Trail’s Youth Equity Stewardship (YES!) program, which strives to prepare students to recognize and learn from the diversity around them • Honorary member of ATtribute (Addison Trail’s yearbook) • Co-captain of the Boys Soccer Team Future plans: Gomez looks forward to continuing a challenging path. with COVID-19 can also spread it to a more vulnerable person. Although children rarely die from the disease, any death of a child is tragic, especially when it could have been prevented.

Are vaccine side effects different in children?

In clinical trials, the side effects of the vaccine for children were comparable to those seen in ages 12 and older, with the most commonly reported side effects being sore arm, fatigue, headache, muscle/joint pain, fever and chills. Side effects generally went away within a few days. No serious side effects were reported. Allergies to Pfizer’s vaccine ingredients are rare; the vaccine does not contain eggs, preservatives or latex.

In very rare cases, the Pfizer vaccine has been linked to myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle that can also be caused by bacterial and viral infections including COVID-19), mostly in males ages 12-17. In most cases, symptoms appeared within a few days of the second dose and went away quickly. In Pfizer’s clinical trial for ages 5-11, there were no cases of myocarditis.

What about long-term effects of the vaccine for children?

As with adults, serious side effects that could cause a long-term health problem are extremely unlikely following COVID-19 vaccination for children. Millions of people have already received the vaccine, and no long-term side effects have been detected. Experts believe the vaccine is safe for growing bodies and should not affect puberty, fertility or brain development. The long-term effects of an actual COVID-19 infection, on the other hand, can be serious, devastating and long-lasting.

How long does immunity last from vaccination?

As with the adult vaccines, it’s unknown how long the COVID-19 vaccine will protect children ages 5-11 against infection or whether boosters will be needed. At the same time, we don’t know how long protection lasts after someone recovers from a

COVID-19 infection, and reinfection can happen. Even if a child already had COVID-19, vaccination is still recommended as it gives the child a boosted immune response and strong protection.

Do you need to space out the COVID vaccine from other immunizations?

The CDC says that for ages 12 and up, it is safe to get the flu and other vaccines at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccine, as the side effects are generally the same when given alone or with other vaccines.

What about a vaccine for kids from Moderna or Johnson & Johnson?

Moderna has shared promising results from its vaccine trial in this age group and said it plans to submit data to the FDA soon for its COVID-19 vaccine for children. Johnson & Johnson is currently conducting vaccine trials in children as well.

What else do parents need to know?

Expanding vaccination to children as young as 5 is an important step in protecting children and families for the winter season ahead, keeping them in school and letting them return to normal activities with less risk.

Many pediatricians are urging parents not to wait. The highly contagious delta variant is circulating, and there’s no way to predict if a child will get very sick from it. Vaccination is the best way to protect children from getting severe COVID-19 illness.

If parents have questions about whether their child should get vaccinated, they should ask their child’s doctor.

Vaccination may not be recommended for a child with a known history of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to any component of the vaccine.

Edward-Elmhurst Health has COVID-19 vaccine appointments available for anyone age 5 and older and is currently scheduling appointments at the Edward-Elmhurst Health Center at 2205 Butterfield Road in Downers Grove.
