Police reminds drivers: be thankful for your seat belt A letter from Addison Police Sergeant Dennis Kotlinski:

Thanksgiving has arrived and for many residents, that means traveling to spend the holiday with friends and family. I want to remind everyone that no matter how far you’re driving this Thanksgiving, whether it’s down the road to a friend’s house, across town to pick up a pumpkin pie, or hundreds of miles to see a relative, you could be involved in a crash. And if you or anyone in your vehicle is not wearing their seat belt, everyone is at a much greater risk of being killed.

Being a good driver isn’t an effective defense against a drunk or reckless driver; statistics show that most crashes happen within a few miles of your home.

It is well known that Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year. More cars on the road present the potential for more crashes. More crashes lead to more fatalities, but you don’t have to be one of them. During Thanksgiving 2014, there were over 300 people killed in crashes on our nation’s roads, and over half of those occupants killed were not wearing seat belts. At night, that percentage increased to over 60%.

Most roadway deaths are completely preventable. Excessive speed, driving drunk/under the influence of drugs, and not wearing seat belts pose a danger to your life. We act to prevent disease and illness, but it’s time to act and prevent one of the nation’s biggest killers – car crashes.

That is why the Addison Police Department is joining safety advocates nationwide to spread the message about the importance of seat belts; to prevent these tragedies from occurring. Many Americans know of at least one person who has been

killed in a crash, but still, too many people think it can’t happen to them.

Just because crashes are common, doesn’t mean they aren’t preventable.

This Thanksgiving, there should be no more excuses. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Click It or Ticket.

We want all drivers and passengers, front or back seat, to buckle up, day or night. If you’re traveling with children, remember that they are required to ride in a car seat or booster seat until at least age 8 in Illinois.

Chris Andriano steps down after career record 300 wins

Montini Catholic High School in Lombard, home of the six-time State Champion Bronco football team, has announced the retirement of Football Head Coach Chris Andriano.

Recently honored by students and staff for his historic achievement of 300 career game wins, Coach Andriano announced his retirement during Montini’s 2016 End-OfSeason Football Banquet on Sunday evening, November 20.

His accumulated record of 300 wins, while leading the Broncos to 10 conference championships, made for an accomplished career.

His 300th game was celebrated on October 28, after his Broncos defeated St. Ignatius’ Wolfpack during Round 1 of the IHSA 6A Playoffs.

The ninth coach to reach the 300th win level in the state of Illinois in high school football, Andriano is the only Illinois high school football coach who has won state championships in three different classes Class 4A – 2004; Class 5A 2009, 10, 11 and 12; and, Class 6A in 2015.

Throughout his 43-year career, “Coach A” has been an assistant coach in football, basketball, baseball and track and field. He also served as the moderator of the Hockey Team in the late 90s. He was named the Broncos’ second head football coach in 1979. (Jim Kavanaugh served the position from 1966 through 1978.)

Andriano guided the school to its first IHSA State Playoff in 1981, a season that resulted in an appearance in the state quarterfinals. After three trips to the semis that came up short, the 2004 Broncos reached the State Championship game and defeated Coal City to win their firstever football State Champions.

Montini Catholic has qualified for the post season 28 times including a current streak of 23 seasons consecutively that began in 1993.

Coach Andriano was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2001.

He was honored as one of three recipients of Montini Catholic’s Leadership Award at the school’s 50th Anniversary celebration in

June of this year and received Millikin University’s Excellence in Life Award in 2015. The award was presented by Montini (‘86) and Millikan (‘91) alumnus, Tom Mahoney, superintendent of Oregon School District, and is given from Millikin’s Football Alumni Advisory Board to graduates of Millikin who have demonstrated excellence in their professional careers.

“There is no way to count the number of people Coach A has touched. I am a beneficiary of his work,” said Mahoney. “He has a true calling. He has made me a better person.”

“I have had the pleasure of working with Chris Andriano for 31 years,” said MC Principal Maryann O’Neill. “When I look at Coach A, I see a role model that any child would be lucky to have in his/her life. He is an excellent teacher and an outstanding coach because he truly cares about our kids. What makes him special is not his strong work ethic or his incredible coaching skills but rather his ability to command respect while inspiring kids to reach their full potential on the field and in life.

“Coach A truly lives the mission of our founder, St. John Baptist de LaSalle - to touch the hearts of every student. He has touched many, many hearts here at Montini.”

“On behalf of the entire Bronco Football Program, we want to thank Coach Andriano for all of his dedication and service to the Montini community for the past 43 years,” said Coach Michael Bukovsky. “Current and future Broncos will still be challenged to live up to Coach Andriano’s ‘Team First’ philosophy and ‘Never Say Die’ attitude! Personally I know he is looking forward to spending time with his family and doing some serious fishing!”

“Chris has led our teams to great victories and heartbreaking defeats,” said MC President Jim Segredo. “But, more importantly, in the process he has greatly impacted the lives of many students and athletes throughout an incredible span of five decades.”

In 2015, upon accepting the Millikin Award in front of Montini’s entire student body, Andriano spoke words, which he said have become his mantra.

Addison man gets 18 years for sexual assault of female relative Victim, 9, praised for speaking up, helping build case against suspect

According to a release issued by the office of DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin, last week Judge Brian Telander sentenced Alfredo Sedeno, 53, of Addison, to 18 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for sexually assaulting a minor daughter of a relative. On Nov. 16, Sedeno appeared in court where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child, a Class X Felony.

The sentence stems from allegations that, from October 2011 through January 2015, Sedeno sexually assaulted his nine-year-old victim at her home while her mother was working. The assault was uncovered when the girl told her moth-

er what Sedeno had done to her. The girl’s mother immediately contacted the Addison Police Department who in turn contacted the DuPage County Children’s Center.

On June 12, 2015, Sedeno appeared in bond court where his bond was set at $550,000 with 10% to apply. He has remained in custody since that time.

“This young victim was forced to endure a terrible sexual assault committed by a family member who was responsible for watching over her while her mother worked,” Berlin said.

“Following the assault, this brave young girl showed tremendous courage in disclosing to her mother what Mr. Sedeno had done to her. Thanks to her strength, we were able to build a very strong case against Mr. Sedeno, resulting in today’s plea and eighteen-year sentence.”

Sedeno will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Library announces no more fines for late materials

Addison Public Library goes fines free As of Tuesday, Nov. 1, the Addison Public Library became “fines free” for residents who hold a library card.

Removing fines for overdue materials removes financial barriers for residents already paying for library access through taxes.

According to a release the library issued last week, fines and chari-

table contributions in the past have allowed libraries to open, buy materials and sometimes even pay for library staff. Now, libraries are a part of the tax structure for every house, apartment, and business in incorporated Addison, making fines unnecessary. Libraries in at least six other Illinois communities have also made the switch.

“I welcome the change and am thrilled to be eliminating this long standing barrier that has existed between us and our users,” said Library Director Mary Medjo Me Zengue. “Fines are simply not a source of revenue we rely on. Last year, fines for overdue materials accounted for just 0.07% of our total revenue. As long as we still have an

effective mechanism to get people to return their materials in a timely fashion, and I am confident that we do, fines were simply no longer necessary.

“The Addison community has built a beautiful library, filled it with educational and entertaining materials, and employed knowledgeable and helpful staff. For these reasons

and others, there should be as few barriers as possible for residents using the library and its materials.”

Patrons are still responsible for the items they check out. If items are kept longer than 14 days past the due date, the user account is blocked from any further use and the items are charged to that account at full replacement value. The account will remain blocked until the items are returned, in acceptable condition, or paid for.

“It’s all about accessibility for the people of Addison,” said Diane Ludwig, head of Guest Services at the library. “We’re excited to be able to give back to the community that supports us.”

Addison Nov. 17 Daniel P. Lomma, 29, of Addison, was arrested in the 1100 block of W. Lake St., Roselle, at around 12:08 a.m. Police said the Bloomingdale Police Department performed a traffic stop on Lomma, who was found to have an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for resisting arrest.

Nov. 16 • Robert J. Diamond, 28, of Lake in the Hills, was arrested in the 1100 block of National Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. and charged with aggra-

vated assault. Police said that during a traffic altercation, Diamond pointed a gun at a victim as he drove past the victim’s vehicle.

• Javier Olague, 37, of Addison, was arrested in the 200 block of W. Lake Park Dr. at around 7:48 p.m. and charged with battery. Police said Olague punched the victim on the forehead with a closed fist.

Nov. 14 A 29-year-old Addison man was arrested in the 900 block of Craig Place at around 2:54 a.m. Police said the suspect had a warrant out of the Elk Grove Village Police Department for domestic battery.

Nov. 13 • David Cordova, 32, of Hillside, was arrested near Lake and Cardinal at around 1:30 a.m. and charged with DUI, speeding and improper lane usage following a traffic stop.

• A 35-year-old Elmhurst man was arrested in the 100 block of S.

Linden Ave., Elmhurst, at around 1:15 p.m. and charged with domestic battery. Police said the suspect was transported from the Elmhurst Police Department to the Addison Police Department and charged with domestic battery after he grabbed the victim by her neck and threw her on the floor, then pulled her out of the apartment and down the stairs.

The suspect reportedly pushed a second victim onto a couch.

Nov. 12 Javier Enriquez Jr., 30, of Addison, was arrested near Lake and McNair at around 1:37 a.m. and charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of cannabis, endangering the health/life of a child and failure to give aid or information following an accident.

• Burglary was reported in the 400 block of N. Douglas. Police said that between 12:01 and 5 a.m., an unknown suspect stole medicine out of a vehicle parked in a driveway.

Nov. 6 Ismael Ayala, 59, of Lombard, was arrested at a bar at around 1:33 a.m. and charged with allowing persons under the age of 21 into the establishment without a parent or guardian.

Fullerton tries sport-stacking in hopes of world record On Thursday, Nov. 17, students at Fullerton School participated in the World Sport Stacking Association’s (WSSA) effort to set a new Guinness World Record for “Most People Sport Stacking at Multiple Locations in One Day.” The WSSA has set a new world record every year since 2006. The number they were attempting to beat this year was 618,394.

Fullerton students have been learning and practicing sport stacking drills in physical education classes. Sport stacking involves a variety of different activities, which promote hand-eye coordination, brain activation, fitness, and teamwork.

Update on School District 4 negotiations with teachers union The negotiations teams for the Addison School District 4 Board of Education and the Addison Teachers’ Association are pleased to announce that they have reached a tentative 3-year agreement.

The salary guideline include annual increases of 5% the first year, 4.5% the second year, and 4.5% the third year of the contract. In the area of health insurance, the Board will pay 88% of the single health coverage premium and 55% of the family health coverage premium. The negotiations teams also agreed on language regarding Education Advancement and the Insurance Advisory Board.

The Board of Education and the membership of the Addison Teachers’ Association will need to vote on the tentative agreement before the contract can be finalized. The voting schedule has not yet been established.

Stone fifth graders learn science in the mix Stone School students in Mrs. Hahn’s fifth grade class learned about solutions by mixing, observing, and predicting outcomes in their science class on Friday morning.

Teams of students mixed salt, sugar, cornstarch, baking soda in glasses of water and then observed the results.

When discussing the experiments, they concluded that the amount of

solute (powders) dissolved in the solvent (water) affected the clarity of the solution. Students were asked to predict what would happen to the solutions after they are allowed to sit untouched for a period of time.

When the class returns to school after Thanksgiving, they will check their glasses to see if any of their predictions were accurate.

After practicing, these students have their own race to stack and unstack the cups in front of them. The event is called Sports Stacking and Fullerton School was hoping to set a world record. Sport stacking involves a variety of different activities, which promote hand-eye coordination, brain activation, fitness, and teamwork.

AT hosts Kermes, a Latino food festival

On Nov. 12, the halls of Addison Trail were transformed into a carnival – filled with vibrant decorations, the sounds of traditional Latino music and the inviting aroma of traditional Latino dishes.

The event was the school’s third annual “Kermes” (a Latino food festival), which was hosted by the Addison Trail Interact Club and Padres Latinos en Acción group. About 300 people attended the festival, which raised about $2,000 for student scholarships.

Along with the food, which was donated by Carnicerias Jimenez, the event featured a disc jockey, performances by two Folkloric dance groups, a silent auction, face painting, games and more.

St. Paul Lutheran plans cookie walk A Holiday Cookie Walk will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 9-11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 105 Army Trail Rd. A wide variety of delicious homemade Christmas cookies will be sold by the pound.

Addison Trail boys basketball team optimistic about season Veterans Williams, Noel and Kalbas return to lead Blazers

Experience in sports is a valuable commodity.

The Addison Trail boys basketball team has that experience in triplicate this year in the form of returning seniors Michael Williams, Colten Noel and Jack Kalbas.

Williams is a 6-5 guard-forward, while Noel is a 6-6 F-C and Kalbas is a 5-10 senior guard. Noel will continue his basketball career next season at Goshen College in Indiana.

“We will lean on those three a little bit,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons. “But we’re looking for contributions from other guys. Michael has blossomed this year. He’s developed an outside game and has become more balanced.

Also back are seniors Bobby Daniels (6-1, G) and Stevan Jones (6-3, F). “Those are a pair of football guys who are back in the mix,” said Lyons. “Colten has a bigger presence in the post and has diversified his game.

For his size and weight he’s pretty athletic. He’ll be able to play about the rim. Jack is a good shooter who can extend us more from the 3-point line. He qualified for the state 3-point contest last year. We’re hoping he continues to build on the diversity of his game and continues to take the ball to the basket. Those three guys averaged about 27 or 28 points combined last year. I’d like that balance to continue. They are key to what we do.”

However, Lyons said there are many more components to the team.

“We anticipate probably going 10-12 deep with guys in the rotation during Thanksgiving,” he said.

Back from last year are Dana Sasenick and Katie Pettinger. Both bowlers qualified for sectionals last winter. Sasenick is a junior and Pettinger is a sophomore.

“Dana and Katie both performed very well at sectionals, but came up a little short at going to state,” said Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen.

Willowbrook also welcomes back senior Jordan Tiberi who is coming back from injury.

“With Katie and Dana returning and with Jordan coming back from injury, we look to have a very good season,” said Allen.

Freshman Makayla Jones also will help the team. “Makayla is a new bowler to Willowbrook, but not new to the sport,” said Allen.

“She will be a strong addition to the team this year.”

Sophomore Holly Helsper also will be a key contributor.

“This season we should be keeping an eye on Jordan Dana, Katie, Holly and Makayla having great seasons,” said Allen. “Our team is full of young talented bowlers who are developing their skills on a daily basis. The future looks bright. We are looking to have a great year and be at the top of the conference.”

Willowbrook kicks off action in an invitational on Saturday and will take part in the Willowbrook quad on Nov. 29. The Warriors open conference play against Downers Grove South on Dec. 6.

Willowbrook girls basketball The Willowbrook girls basketball team dropped a recent 50-29 contest to Glenbard North.

Willowbrook trailed 10-2 after the first quarter and 27-12 at halftime. The Warriors outscored Glenbard North 8-7 in the fourth quarter.

Hanna Jonrath led the Warriors with 15 points. She made two 3-pointers and had three steals. Cecilla Lizasuain added six points.

Grace Chantos pulled down seven rebounds. Sara Fitzgibbon made a 3-pointer. Chantos also had three assists and three steals.

“Eric and Cyril are both perimeter guys and we’ll bank on their experience on the JV last year and look forward to them contributing,” said Lyons. “We anticipate Adem will play a lot and Mike Pudlo has gotten better.

Between those nine guys and several others, we have a lot of depth and options to sort through.”

Lyons said he’s confident about the team’s offensive prospects, but cautions the Blazers must continue to work on the defensive end.

“I feel really good about the offense. It’s ahead of the defense right now,” he said. “We have guys who can score. We’ll be fine on offense.

We’ve been stressing the defensive

end. We were a little disappointed with that at the end of summer. It’s a focal point in what we’ve been doing. If we are consistent and can compete at that end I feel like a lot of good things can happen here and we will continue to build on our recent success we’ve had here the last three years. Both ends of the floor are very important and defense more so. If you have a bad offensive game you can still win if you play good defense. Our goal is to hold teams to 50 points a game. Two years ago we held teams to 45 and we won 15 games. Last year we gave up 52 or 53 points and won 14. That’s a huge difference.”

Lyons said Downers Grove South will again be a team to watch in the West Suburban Conference Gold

Division. “They have almost everybody back,” he said. “Willowbrook should be really good. They were young last year. And then you have the usual with Morton, Proviso East, Hinsdale South and Leyden. All the teams are competitive. There are no easy games in there and you have to play 12 of them. If we don’t come to play, we’re going to find ourselves on the back end of the conference. We have the depth here. Now we have to push ourselves on both ends of the floor. If we are able to master things on both ends of the floor, it’s realistic we could have 17-plus wins here.”

Addison Trail opened the season earlier in the week at the Elmwood Park tournament. The Blazers are in search of their third tournament title in a row there.

Jon Kelso caught 50 passes for 848 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 17.0 yards per catch and had a long grab of 80 yards. Khalif Copeland caught 32 passes for 490 yards and seven touchdowns and averaged 15.3 yards per catch. Mikie Deombowski caught 29 passes for 410 yards and four touchdowns.

He averaged 14.1 yards per catch.

Freddy Clay caught 19 passes for 334 yards (17.6 yards per catch) and had two touchdowns. Sikander Zafar also caught a touchdown pass.

On defense, Jessen led the Warriors with 138 tackles and had 12 tackles for loss. Copeland had 113 tackles and six tackles for loss. Kevon Dobbins had 62 tackles and 20 tackles for loss. Will Schuller had 70 tackles and 16 tackles for loss. Jacob Entwistle had 49 tackles and 13.5 tackles for loss. Matthew Knudtson had 36 tackles and nine tackles for loss, while Christian Washington

had 48 tackles and nine tackles for loss.

Dobbins led the team with 6.5 quarterback sacks. Schuller had 5.5 sacks, while Jessen had 4.5. Entwistle had 3.5 sacks, while Knudtson had three.

Copeland led the team with seven interceptions that resulted in returns of 160 yards. Kelso had four interceptions, while Entwistle had three.

Clay, Eugene Findley and Nick Sabatino each had one interception.

Copeland led the team with 19 pass deflections. Kelso had 15 and Clay had 14. Sabatino had nine. Schuller had two fumble recoveries. Jessen had three caused fumbles, while Copeland had two. Copeland also blocked a punt and a field goal this season.

Jessen was the team leader in touchdowns with 21. Copeland had eight, while Kelso had seven and Diaz had six.

Willowbrook football team filled stat pages during successful playoff run CORRESPONDENT

The stats prove what already is known.

The Willowbrook football team had a season to remember. The Warriors went 8-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 7A state playoffs, becoming only one of three teams in program history to win two playoff games.

Statistically, quarterback MJ Ranieri went 138-for-241 for 2,146 yards. He threw 20 touchdown passes.

On the ground, the Warriors averaged 230 yards rushing per game. Junior Jack Jessen carried the ball 257 times for 1,671 yards (6.5 yards per carry) and had nine 100-yard games.

Jessen scored 21 touchdowns.

Junior Chris Davis ran 79 times for 639 yards (8.1 yards per carry) and scored six touchdowns. He had three 100-yard rushing games.

AT-Willowbrook’s Haake earns two Top 10 finishes at state swimming

Addison Trail-Willowbrook sophomore swimmer Elissa Haake needs to clear some room times two in her trophy case.

Haake logged a pair of Top 10 finishes at the recent IHSA girls state swimming finals held at Evanston Township High School.

Haake finished ninth in the 200 with a time of 1:52.90. She qualified for the finals after taking eighth in the preliminary round with a time of 1:52.27. Her seed time was 1:54.09.

Haake also took 10th in the 100 with a time of 52.44. Haake went into the finals after swimming 52.15 and finishing 10th. Her seed time

was 52.09.

Haake becomes the first AT-Willowbrook swimmer to earn two Top 10 finishes at the state meet. Kelly McNamara also had two medalist finishes in 2012, but was part of a relay team that took 12th. McNamara is the program’s only state champion (butterfly in 2014).

Earlier, AT-Willowbrook took seventh at the York sectional with 88 points.

Annalise Morrone was 10th in the 50 with a time of 25.42. Haake won the 100 sectional title in 52.09. She also won the 200 in 1:54.09. Kaitlyn Fox was 16th in the 500 at 6:12.14.

Anna Christiansen took 12th in the backstroke at 1:05.70.

Morrone was third in the breaststroke at 1:09.26. Grace Roucka was 17th in the butterfly at 1:10.65.

Christiansen was 16th in the 200 IM at 2:30.60.

AT-Willowbrook placed fifth in the 200 relay in 1:40.81 with Haake, Christiansen, Ramirez and Morrone. Haake and Christiansen are sophomores and Ramirez is a junior.

AT-Willowbrook was eighth in the 400 relay in 3:54.72 with Haake, Savannah Catalano, Klea Gjonaj and Ramirez.

AT-Willowbrook also took eighth in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.42 with Christiansen, Morrone, Roucka and Gjonaj.

IC Catholic Prep football team defeats Monticello to reach Class 3A state title game; Rowell rushes for 302 yards

The IC Catholic Prep football team defeated Monticello 48-6 in a Class 3A state semifinal football game played on Saturday, Nov. 19 in Monticello.

The victory sends unbeaten IC Catholic Prep (13-0) to the Class 3A state-championship game Friday at 4 p.m. against Carlinville. The game will be televised live on CSN Chicago.

The Knights are looking for their third state championship since 2002.

The 2002 team went 13-1 and won the title under coach Bob Cozzi, while the 2008 team went 10-4 and won the title under coach Bill Schmidt. The Knights reached the state semifinals last season.

Carlinville is the No. 4 seed on the bottom half of the Class 3A bracket and is 12-1. The Knights are the top seed in the top portion of the bracket.

Carlinville downed No. 3 seed Virden North Mac 27-21 in the other semifinal.

In the win against Monticello, coach Bill Krefft’s Knights turned up the volume on their rushing game to another level. The Knights ran for 516 yards on the ground on 61 carries (8.5 yards per carry).

Northern Illinois University-bound Jordan Rowell ran 31 times for 302 yards (9.7 yards per carry) and scored four touchdowns.

Rowell has now run for 2,025 yards on only 153 carries this season (13.2 yards per carry) and has 34 rushing touchdowns. The Knights have 63 rushing touchdowns this season.

Junior Lazerick Eatman ran 21 times for 160 yards and averaged 7.6 yards per carry. Daniel Gibbons and Jacob Lytton also scored rushing touchdowns.

Luke Ricobene completed seven of 11 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown. Matt Sutton caught a 15-yard touchdown pass, while Khali Sanders had two catches for 12 yards. Brendan Russ had one catch for 18 yards.

Eatman had one catch for 16 yards.

Khalil Saunders had one catch for 11 yards and Luke Calles had a 7-yard catch.

The Knights needed to make only 49 tackles in the game. Chris Johnson had nine tackles. Jim Kenneally and Kemon Reese each had six tackles.

Eatman had four tackles.

Ryan Malek and Sutton each had an interception. Eatman and Rowell each had pass deflections and Johnson and Saunders each had a fumble recovery.

Sam Buffo kicked six extra points.

Illinois Chamber opposes business tax increases

The Illinois Chamber of Commerce recently issued a release saying it was working in opposition to an Amendment to HB293, which is could increase taxes on employers throughout the state of Illinois by more than $2.5 billion. On the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 15, the House Revenue Committee held a hearing on House Amendment 1 to HB 293.

Keith Staats, executive director of the Illinois Chamber’s Tax Institute, spoke in opposition to the amendment at the hearing.

According to the release, the amendment consists of a series of changes to the Illinois Income Tax Act, sales tax laws, and the estate tax, which will impose new financial burdens to busi-

nesses in Illinois.

According to Staats, the amendment provisions include: increasing the corporate income tax rate to 6%; eliminating the rolling stock exemption from the sales tax for purchases of transportation equipment; eliminating the Manufacturing Machinery Equipment Exemption; changing how the income of multistate companies is apportioned to Illinois; decoupling from the federal domestic production activities deduction; and imposing higher income tax burdens on the airline industry.

“All of these examples and many other provisions of the bill would, if adopted, provide incentives for businesses and their employees to leave Illinois and disincentives for Illinois business expansion,” Staats said.

There is an implication that we need to “make the best” of the President-elect Donald Trump.

Those of us who voted for Trump, really do believe he’s the best person for the position. Hillary Clinton and her husband have extremely serious, questionable things they’ve done, regarding women and respect for women and many other issues, to be

concerned about.

If we were looking for great character and morals in our candidates, we would vote for no one.

So, we voted for the candidate who supports the policies we believe in.

Outlook: The IC Catholic Prep football steamroller stops in Champaign Friday in hopes of claiming the school’s third state football championship.

The Knights have been impressive in their four playoff victories—49-8, 650, 48-14 and 48-6 against teams with a combined 37-5 record at the time they played IC Catholic Prep in the playoffs. Standout running back Jordan Rowell went over the 2,000 rushing yard mark in the semifinal win against Monticello. The Knights are averaging 10.4 yards per carry on the ground and have 63 rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Luke Ricobene had 2,247 passing yards and has thrown 27 touchdown passes. In the takeaways department the Knights have only had nine turnovers and have 38 takeaways for an impressive plus-29. Who is this Carlinville team? The Cavaliers play in the South Central Conference where it finished in a three-way tie for first place.

Its only loss was a 25-23 setback to co-champion Pana in the fourth game of the season. During the regular season, Carlinville played only three teams with winning records and went 2-1. Carlinville has given up 19, 35, 21 and 21 points in their four playoff games. Conversely, IC Catholic Prep hasn’t given up more than two touchdowns in a game in 11 weeks and have held 10 opponents to nine or fewer points. The Knights also haven’t scored fewer than 40 points since the first week of the season when it shutdown Bishop McNamara 34-0.

The Fenton girls volleyball team finished the 2016 season with 13 wins, but coach Kelly Kleidorfer noted improvements spanned well beyond any win-loss ledger.

“Throughout the season we improved in all aspects of the game,” she said. “Our serving improved, our serve-receive took a step forward, our hitting and blocking was much improved and our overall team defense kept getting better. We keep taking steps forward, but just keep coming up a little short looking for that conference win. It’s a very good conference in terms of volleyball and we will keep competing to the best of our abilities.”

Kleidorfer said team chemistry was sky-high this season. “This was a very close team,” she said. “A lot of girls play club together so they are spending a lot of time together outside the school season. The seniors treated the sophomores like they were seniors and it was fun to see each girl puling for the next. Even when times were tough, they did an excellent job of staying together.”

Paulina Milanowski led the team with a 92.7 percent service ratio (318 for 343 serving) with 62 aces. She also had a team-best 162 kills and 277 assists.

honors and was named the Fenton team MVP. “As people can see by our final stats, Paulina meant a ton to us on the court,” said Kleidorfer. “However, she meant just as much in practice and off the court. She was like another coach. She had such a great feel for what the team needed and never hesitated to call a quick team huddle if things weren’t going well.

Her skill set speaks for itself. Very few girls will lead their team in as many statistical categories as she did for us. There was not one team we played where Paulina wouldn’t have been a starter on that team. She could have set for most teams that needed a setter. She could have hit for teams that needed a hitter and she could have played libero for teams that needed defense. She is playing club right now and has been talking with a few different colleges.”

Vicky Krzyszkowski led the team in blocks with 41 and Ashley Lira was tops in digs with 191.

Kleidorfer said the program continues to be headed in the right direction. “We are very excited for the future,” she said. “This group of seniors has set a standard that has been witnessed by the juniors and the sophomores who were with us.

The JV team showed great improvement throughout the season and we are excited about what those girls will give us. On top of that, we have girls coming from the freshman team who will be good players in the future. Fenton volleyball is in a good palce and headed for even better accomplishments in the future.”
