Pre-trial release denied for armed DeKalb man charged with leading police on high-speed chase in stolen vehicle Alleged juvenile accomplice scheduled to appear at detention hearing

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael McLean have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden granted Yohanice the state’s motion to deny pre-trial Jones Skipper release for a DeKalb man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle.

Yohanice Jones Skipper, 18, appeared at First Appearance Court on Nov. 14. He is charged with one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle (Class 2 felony), one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony), one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon (Class 4 felony), two counts of misdemeanor resisting a police officer, one count of misdemeanor driving while license suspended and one count of misdemeanor leaving

the scene of an accident involving damage to an attended vehicle.

The juvenile, a 17-year-old male from Bellwood, was scheduled to appear at a detention hearing on Nov. 15. The juvenile is charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon (Class 4 felony).

On Nov. 13, at approximately 9:54 p.m., upon learning of a pursuit involving a 2017 Hyundai Elantra allegedly stolen out of Maywood that was wanted for an armed robbery out of River Forest, the Elmhurst Police Department stationed multiple squad cars near the I-290 exit at York Road.

It is alleged that the suspected vehicle, allegedly driven by Jones Skipper with the juvenile as a passenger, exited I-290 at York Road and came to a stop at a traffic light near the exit. It is alleged that multiple squad cars with the Elmhurst

Police Department attempted to box in the Elantra, at which time, Jones Skipper fled the scene, striking the front passenger side of an Elmhurst squad car.

It is alleged that officers activated their emergency lights and sirens and pursued the Elantra eastbound on Crestview Avenue where Jones Skipper allegedly reached speeds of approximately 72 mph in a 25mph zone. It is further alleged that Jones Skipper then drove over a curb where Crestview Avenue comes to a dead end and stopped the car near a residence where both he and the juvenile fled on foot.

The juvenile was quickly taken into custody at this time and officers allegedly found a handgun located in his coat pocket and a bullet in his pants pocket. After a brief foot pursuit, Jones Skipper was taken into custody in the backyard of a residence. When searching the area, officers found a loaded handgun with one bullet in the chamber next to a

garage close to where Jones Skipper was taken into custody.

“In DuPage County, anyone who attempts to flee from the police will soon find themselves arrested, charged, and aggressively prosecuted,” Berlin said. “The cooperative efforts displayed by multiple law enforcement agencies sends the unmistakable message that we will not tolerate any display of contempt for the rule of law that puts the motoring public and innocent pedestrians at risk, and we will take whatever steps necessary to ensure the safety of our communities. What is particularly aggravating in this case are the allegations that Mr. Jones Skipper and his accomplice allegedly reach speeds of more than seventy mph in a residential neighborhood and were allegedly armed as they attempted to flee police on foot through the neighborhood. I commend the Elmhurst Police Department for not only their efforts on this case, but also for their ongoing commitment to keep-

ing our roadways safe. I thank the Illinois State Police, DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick’s office, the Bensenville, Villa Park, and Oak Brook police departments.”

“The swift coordination of law enforcement resources in this incident led to the capture of two armed suspects within minutes of entering our city,” McLean said. “The efforts of the Elmhurst Police Department’s first responder drone program, two police K9s and strong multi-agency teamwork is a formidable strategy keeping our community safe. I’m thankful no officers were injured apprehending the suspects or their fleeing vehicle. I’d also like to thank the Illinois State Police, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, the Bensenville, Villa Park, and Oak Brook police departments for their assistance.”

Jones Skipper’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 11, for arraignment in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

Advocates hail regulatory ‘earthquake’ as state slashes requested gas rate increases

Company profits cut; low-income customers set to receive new discounts

Regulators at the Illinois Commerce Commission have unanimously approved rate hikes for four major natural gas utilities, but the little-known regulatory body’s decision was perhaps more notable for what it rejected.

The five-member board flexed its regulatory muscle, slashing the utilities’ requested rate increases by as much as 50 percent.

“This was an earthquake in Illinois utility regulation,” Abe Scarr, director of consumer advocacy group Illinois PIRG told Capitol News Illinois after the Nov. 16 meeting.

Scarr and PIRG were among the consumer advocates asking for greater regulatory oversight of the natural gas industry ahead of the requested rate increase from the four utilities that collectively serve 98 percent of Illinois’ gas customers— Nicor Gas, Ameren Illinois, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas. Rates will still rise next year, but not nearly as much as they would have if the commission had approved the utilities’ initial requests.

The commissioners instead sided with consumer advocates—rejecting several recommendations from the ICC’s own staff—in several key areas, including profit rates, low-income discounts and spending oversight.

Commissioners lowered Ameren’s initial ask by about 50.8 percent and cut Nicor’s request by 30.3 percent.

For Peoples Gas, it was a 25 percent reduction, and for its sister company North Shore, regulators cut the request by 34 percent.

While advocates hailed the ICC’s decisions as a victory, utilities were

wary.

“My initial reaction is that I’m concerned,” Matthew Tomc, who oversees regulatory affairs for Ameren Illinois, told Capitol News Illinois.

Tomc said that once Ameren staff fully reviews the ICC decision, they will consider requesting a rehearing to challenge the ICC’s conclusions.

Other companies involved in the cases indicated they were reviewing the decisions.

“Natural gas remains the most affordable energy source for winter-residential heating and is the main fuel source used by manufacturers in Illinois,” Nicor spokesperson Jennifer Golz said in a statement.

“Nicor Gas provides an affordable energy source, which is more important now than ever with families facing rising costs for everything. resources as an energy.”

Nicor and Peoples Gas have not released cost estimates under the new rates approved Nov. 16.

But downstate Ameren Illinois says costs will remain similar to last winter, echoing claims made

by Peoples Gas earlier this year.

Spending oversight, consumer impacts In general, the ICC’s five commissioners reduced the companies’ requests for infrastructure spending, citing a lack of evidence that increased rates were necessary to maintain system safety.

But the commission was particularly of one company’s spending choices. Peoples Gas, which operates in the city of Chicago, has been highly criticized for its ongoing system modernization program, which critics have said is plagued by

regular budget overruns and is often behind schedule.

Thursday’s ICC decision not only reduced Peoples Gas’ overall infrastructure spending request, but it also took a strong oversight step for the company’s pipeline replacement program. The ICC paused all spending on the program for the next year and ordered a new ICC investigation into the program.

“We look forward to actively participating in future proceedings and demonstrating how our energy delivery system is critical to Chicago’s clean energy future,” Peoples Gas spokesperson David Schwartz said in a Thursday statement. “We are pleased the Commission shares our concern about safety.”

Scarr, a longtime critic of the program, praised the decision.

“This program was clearly problematic, literally since it got started. It stumbled out of the gates and there’s been so many investigations,” Scarr said. “For years, decision-makers have looked the other way, but they didn’t today and that’s a huge deal.”

Consumer impacts have been one of the most hotly debated elements of the four concurrent rate cases.

Last year, the ICC directed utilities to propose a new system to offer lower energy rates for low-income customers.

These low-income rate designs were one of the areas of focus of Karen Lusson, a lawyer with the National Consumer Law Center who advocated for the plan that the ICC eventually adopted, overruling administrative judges’ recommendations.

“In previous rate case orders, the commission never specifically assessed how affordable or unafford-

able rates are for customers,” Lusson said.

The plan will offer discounts to those with incomes below three times the federal poverty limit, with greater discounts for those making less money. Discounts would apply to an entire customer bill and would be as high as 83 percent for Peoples Gas customers and 75 percent customers of other companies, according to Lusson. These discounts are slated to go into effect in October 2024.

Ameren’s Tomc said he was worried about the program’s potential impacts on customers who are not low-income.

Profits slashed The commission lowered the expected rate hikes by leveraging one of its most powerful tools: deciding companies’ profits through their “return on equity” or ROE. Ameren and Nicor both requested ROE rates above 10 percent, while Peoples Gas requested a 9.9 percent figure. But consumer advocates pushed back on those asks. For example, the Citizens Utility Board, one of several groups that argued for lower rates, requested a range centered on 9.5 percent for Ameren and Peoples Gas and 9.4 percent for Nicor.

But in a surprising move, the Commission set rates in the cases at or below that recommendation.

Nicor Gas will operate with a 9.51 percent ROE, and Ameren will operate with a 9.44 percent ROE. Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas will operate with a 9.38 percent ROE. Sarah Moskowitz, CUB’s executive director, said the move has both consumer and climate implications.

“They (the ICC) sent a strong

message today that they are looking out for the interests of utility customers and understand that we’re going to have to plan for a clean energy transition and that utilities can no longer dodge that issue,” Moskowitz said.

The decisions Nov. 16 also began a process for the state deciding what role natural gas should play in Illinois’ clean energy transition. Each gas company involved in the cases is set to participate in a series of “future of gas” hearings next year that could help shape the industry’s fate in Illinois.

“As the state embarks on a journey toward a 100 percent clean energy economy, the gas system’s operations will not continue to exist in its current form,” ICC Chairman Doug Scott said in a statement. “Identifying how our gas and electric systems can adapt to meet these goals, and what specific actions should be taken to achieve them, will be an important task for the Commission moving forward.”

That statement came a few hours after Scott told utility representatives and advocates that the companies had failed to take that transition into account during the rate cases.

In the Peoples Gas case, for instance, Scott noted that the company “signaled that they are not currently working toward the electrification goals of the state.” He made similar comments about Nicor and Ameren Illinois and cited it as reasoning for cutting some of the companies’ spending.

Climate advocacy groups such as the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition celebrated the decision, issuing a statement that the ICC’s decision indicates “there’s a new sheriff in town.”

Slices of life

Good news and bad news In simple terms, life can be summed up as moments of “good news” and “bad news.”

I’ve come to believe it’s best to embrace both: the good and the bad because each makes us who we are.

Each molds us. Each helps us grow as we are supposed to, meant to, during our time here on this earth.

Embrace the positive and negative just as surely as you embrace those you love. (And I hope you do that often.)

The good news: You were born.

The bad news: You will die (or maybe that’s good news also; we shall see.)

All the rest is made up of the middle, good and bad.

Today was no different. I struggled with an issue with my car.

I am traveling across the country and hoped, believed and wanted my vehicle to run consistently. This morning, 600 miles into the trip, it refused to run at all.

I guess that’s the bad news. Or at least the first rendition of it.

The good news: I found a mechanic who was willing to do a diagnostic on my car first thing this morning.

The bad news: I had a dead battery that wouldn’t hold a charge.

The good news: The mechanic was able to put in a new battery today.

The bad news: The battery was only the tip of the iceberg. I had another major component in need of repairing. This involved something called a turbocharger, which I never knew existed—before today.

The good news: New knowledge about the inner workings of my automobile is power.

The bad news: The turbocharger in question is an expensive repair.

Ka-ching!

The good news (perhaps the best of the day): The mechanic looked up the specifics about my car and I had three days (only three!) left on the manufacturer’s warranty on my vehicle. The turbo expense was covered by warranty. Ka-happy!

The bad news: The nice mechanic wasn’t able to replace my turbo-thingy because it had to be done by a certified dealership.

The good news: The nice mechanic told me which dealership to contact.

The bad news: The dealership couldn’t fit me in until two days later, extending my travel time.

The good news: I’m not on a tight schedule. I can afford an extra two travel days.

You see how it goes?

Good news followed by bad news followed by good news and so forth.

It’s a tightrope, a balancing act— and it’s all about perspective. It keeps us on our toes because life is not meant to be lived on autopilot.

It is supposed to be experienced, every moment of every day—good and bad—eyes wide open.

We learn to walk. We fall down.

We play with friends. They move away. We join the band. We are seated last chair. We flirt with someone in math class. They flirt with our best friend.

We graduate high school with honors. We are denied admittance to our first-choice college. We fall in love. We fall out of love. We find our dream job. Seven years later it’s no longer a dream.

We marry. The honeymoon ends.

We have children. They grow up.

Grandchildren follow and they provide a renewed purpose we didn’t know existed.

Health concerns hit, along with a diagnosis. This is followed by a remission and perhaps even a cure.

Things slow down. Yet, we thrive despite not being as young as we once were. We lose friends, family and significant others to this thing called death.

We keep breathing. We mourn.

We find yet a new way to live and laugh. We become more thoughtful.

We become more grateful. We become more joyful. We grow wise. We come to understand we’ve always been wise.

We embrace love, in all its forms and realize it’s surrounded us our entire lives, despite our circumstance, status or temperament.

The good news: we are renewed, reborn, as has happened many times, throughout our lifetime.

More good news: this happens again with the entity we call death.

It is but another rebirth. Another life. Another source of good news.

Embrace it as fully as you embrace one another. Because when you do, you will understand there can be no more bad news.

It’s all what you make of it.

And that’s my last piece of good news for the day.

Casten: This Thanksgiving, House Republicans should be thankful for Democrats On Nov. 15, U.S. Rep. Sean Casten took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to remind his Republican colleagues that this Thanksgiving, they should be thankful for House Democrats providing the votes needed to keep the government open and avoid economic catastrophe time and time again: “Americans across the country are going to gather around their dinner tables and share what they’re thankful for,” Casten said. “I hope my Republican colleagues will use that moment to reflect on how lucky you are to work with House Democrats.

“I hope you’re thankful for that time last June when Republicans were on the verge of driving us into an economic default and Democrats stepped up, helped you out, and provided the votes needed to make sure we didn’t. I hope you’re thankful for that time 45 days ago

when you were driving us to the edge of an economic shutdown and once again Democrats stepped up, helped you out, and made sure we kept the government open for the American people. I hope you’re thankful for that time this week when Democrats once again had to be the adults in the room, didn’t throw any punches, and made sure that even though the Republican majority couldn’t pass the new speaker’s stopgap measure, we did and we kept the government open for a few more weeks.

“So this Thanksgiving, I’d ask all of you, be thankful. And whatever you do, just don’t be that crazy uncle who won’t stop yapping about Hunter Biden.”

Casten releases statement on continuing resolution to fund the government “If you’re feeling a sense of déjà vu, it’s not hard to figure out why.

For the second time in a matter of weeks, House Democrats have once again stepped up to keep the government open and prevent Republicans from enacting extreme spending cuts to vital programs.

“To be clear, we should have spent the past month-and-a-half working towards a bipartisan solution to fund our government for FY2024. Instead, House Republicans ousted their speaker, took 3 weeks to elect a new one, and struggled to pass harmful and partisan spending bills that did not have any reasonable chance of becoming law.

“The continuing resolution is deeply flawed. It fails to provide assistance to key American allies, does not fund necessary programs to ensure nutrition assistance for women and children, and hurts both the State Department and Department of Defense. But, given the harm a shutdown would inflict, we must move forward with this temporary stopgap measure. I will continue to advocate for a bipartisan, yearlong government funding package to address the needs of the American people and provide critical aid to American allies across the globe.”

Reader: Op-ed on transforming pretrial justice ‘little more than leftist propaganda’

Re: “Transforming pretrial justice for people, systems and communities”, by Alison Shames, Lombardian 11/16/23 P. 4.

Illinois recently enacted the “Pretrial Fairness Act”, which eliminated money bonds for criminals and felons arrested in Illinois. This op-ed, written by a director at the “Center for Effective Public Policy and Research,” a task force most likely very few have heard of, is little more than a typical leftist propaganda plea loaded with “glittering generalities”

to attempt to make a case that this is a good idea for the state to have criminals and felons walk free on the streets after arrested.

Shames’ op-ed is devoid of any legitimate and legal data or details/ facts demonstrating its fairness or usefulness … the “pretrial justice” appears to only be for those who break the law.

The leftists are looking for approval, and this op-ed is an attempt to try to legitimize bad public policy. They actually are trying to tell us that it’s a

good thing to have felons and criminals put the general public at risk!

Most people with common sense already know that this is probably not a good idea. I believe the law will help ensure that Chicago and Illinois will continue to be viewed as a place where it’s dangerous to live, visit, or own a business.

It is all dessert, no meat.

Hello Lombard. I have been trying to follow Speak Out’s advice and call the village hall if I have a question.

Well, it really feels like, seems like, they’re doing everything in their power to circumvent you from asking questions and so forth. They list no phone numbers. You have to call the main phone number; people don’t give their names when they answer the phone. They like to transfer you around. And then, when you get into somebody’s voicemail, it’s very robotic. It rings and rings and rings; people don’t answer. They don’t return messages. They don’t leave their names. Now, if the idea is to frustrate people, it’s working; but don’t you think that the phones should be answered within a couple of rings, and people should give their names, and what department they are in, when they’re going to be available and so forth? I think it’s interesting that all the names have been conveniently removed from the village website.

So what’s up?

The property owner defended the petitioner’s business, essentially asking why aspersions were being cast against a massage business, when there are other massage businesses in Lombard. OK, now that you are done snickering, the petitioner said he is looking to expand his business.

I have faith that the village will have done its due diligence in vetting the business, and if said business meets the zoning ordinance and other restrictions, I can’t see how the village could disallow it. The commission did its own due diligence by asking questions about the business, and voted to have the village board approve it, which it did last week. We already have enough hair salons and dentist’s offices, and that corridor has a gap in the way of business. I think we should welcome businesses to fill in empty space, provide a tax base and become our neighbors. *** Hey Villa Park and Lombard Speak Out friends. Letter to the editor A season of giving, sharing blessings As we prepare for the upcoming season of gratitude and generosity, I wanted to share some of the many, many reasons we have to be grateful here at The Outreach House. Thanks to the support of all of our volunteers, donors and supporters: We are now supporting 1,800 visits to our food pantry each month, a 75 percent increase since our move to 805 S. Main St. just over a year ago.

We are now distributing approximately 18,000 diapers each month, and through our recent membership in the National Diaper Bank Network we will now have access to bulk purchasing which we expect will allow us to reach more families with infants.

We are supporting over 700 visits each month for families to select clothes for all family members, and so

far this year have already distributed almost 450 warm winter coats.

We continue to help more families than ever with emergency assistance as they face the shut-off of an essential utility (gas, water, electricity or sewer).

We are also so grateful to the many generous corporations and foundations who have made some of our operational dreams come true! Thanks to an anonymous donor and support from the DuPage Foundation, we were able to purchase a van large enough to hold three pallets of food; and, thanks to grants from the Northern Illinois Food Bank and DuPage Foundation, we installed a large walk-in cooler, which has enabled us to store more fresh produce essential to healthy diets.

Of course, as we continue to serve the needs of more and more people, we will also continue to need more

Longtime resident devoted herself to Lombard history Pat Poskocil was valued as a historian, community volunteer

Lombard has lost one of its most knowledgeable historians with the passing of Pat Poskocil on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

However, what she leaves behind is a legacy of devotion not only to local history but to her Lombard community as well, having made a difference as a volunteer with, and member of, a number of organizations around town, such as the Lombard Garden Club.

Poskocil had been a member of

P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), as well as the AAUW (American Association of University Women), in the interest of promoting academic opportunities.

In her professional life, the Henry, Ill., native had been an elementary school art teacher, and later worked in sales education and training, traveling the world for AT&T and Lucent Technologies.

Poskocil served as a commissioner with the Lombard Historic Preservation Commission since 1972, and as chairperson for several years.

One of her lasting accomplishments was helping launch the Lombard Historical Society in 1970, along with its two museums—the Victorian Cottage on Maple Street and the Sheldon Peck Homestead on Parkside and Grace.

She was a wealth of knowledge not only about the history and growth of what was once known as Babcock’s

Grove, but also about its inhabitants.

Her devotion to preserving Lombard’s history was evident through her participation in a committee that helped create a book on Lombard history called “Footsteps on the Tall Grass Prairie,” written by Lillian Budd.

Poskocil and her husband Frank also spent many hours taping memories of longtime Lombard residents and descendants of early settlers.

Poskocil earned recognition for her dedication to Lombard when, in 2017, she received the William J. Mueller Lombard Heritage Award, and in 2018, when she received the Lifetime Volunteer Award of Distinction from the Illinois Association of Museums.

When asked about her mother’s sense of community devotion, Poskocil’s daughter, Cynthia Bonura, surmised that “It was the way she grew up”; that is, in a small farming town.

“You get a very different sense of community,” she added.

Lombard history was sometimes a topic at the dinner table, and Bonura said some of her mother’s interest in history rubbed off on her.

She recalled helping rehab the Victorian Cottage that was to become a museum, adding with a chuckle, “I was there scraping paint, hauling garbage out.”

“I thought it was neat to go into an old house,” Bonura continued.

“Seeing how something was put together.”

Fellow local historian Rita Schneider, who also served on the historic commission, shared her thoughts on the passing of her longtime friend: “Pat Poskocil was a person with heart, loyal and given to using her many talents for the good of the community she made her home when she moved to Lombard in the 1960s.

“She was devoted to showing the

history of Lombard to adults and children alike. She saved the Sheldon Peck Homestead for the generations to come. She enhanced the Homestead with her knowledge of art, in particular Peck’s portraits. She used her teaching degree to engage children in Peck’s life, both history and art!

“She was my friend and we enjoyed working on the furthering of Lombard’s history. We will all miss her for her talents and her friendship and her joy of life.”

Poskocil’s dedication to Lombard history doesn’t come as any surprise to her daughter, because besides being a very social person, Bonura observed, “What she was passionate about doing, this is where she was going to go.”

Beacon Hill, 2400 S. Finley Road, Lombard, will be hosting a celebration of life for Poskocil on Monday, Nov. 27, at noon.

Lawmakers approve plan to allow small-scale nuclear development Governor, who vetoed previous bill, supports new effort

Lawmakers have approved a proposal that would allow companies to develop new nuclear power generation in Illinois for the first time since 1987.

House Bill 2473 does not entirely lift the 36-year-old moratorium on nuclear construction. Instead, it creates a regulatory structure for the construction of small modular nuclear reactors, or SMRs. The bill limits the nameplate capacity of such reactors to 300 megawatts, about one-third the size of the smallest of the six existing nuclear power plants in Illinois. It also requires the state to perform a study that will inform rules for regulating SMRs, which will be adopted by regulators at the Illinois Emergency Management Agency by January 2026.

Proponents of the measure say it is a step to make the ongoing transition away from fossil fuels more reliable for customers throughout the state, while opponents warn the unproven

technology comes with safety risks and the potential for cost overruns.

The bill passed with bipartisan support in the Senate, 44-7, and the House, 98-8. The opposition came exclusively from Democrats.

Gov. JB Pritzker said in a statement that he would sign the bill. He worked with lawmakers on the new language of the new bill after vetoing a broader measure this summer.

Leadership of the Illinois AFLCIO umbrella labor organization released a statement, calling the policy an “important for our state’s economy and our clean energy future.”

It echoed a release from the Illinois Manufacturers Association, an industry advocacy group that testified in support of the proposal several times, saying that it would allow the state to “continue leading in energy and manufacturing innovation.”

The legislation’s sponsors, Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, said the bill has the potential to bolster Illinois’ electric reliability as intermittent sources like wind and solar begin to make up

a larger portion of the state’s energy output.

“In order to reach our clean energy goals, we may have to invest in more nuclear generated carbon-free energy,” Yednock said. “The policy does not subtract from the growth of wind and solar energy; it could be an enhancement, as a potential use of small modular reactors could be to energize large manufacturers, therefore keeping more traditional new sources of energy for residential, small commercial customers and our future [electric vehicle] needs.”

Rezin noted that she is particularly interested in the potential for SMRs to be developed at the sites of former coal plants in Illinois, avoiding the need to build new transmission lines, although that process could take many years.

Because permitting nuclear energy takes many years at the federal level, the earliest a nuclear project could be brought online in Illinois would be in the 2030s.

Environmental, safety issues Critics of the bill and of nuclear power remain worried about its implications.

David Kraft, an outspoken critic of nuclear energy and head of the Chicago-based advocacy group Nuclear Energy Information Service, urged lawmakers at a Thursday committee meeting to reject the bill.

Kraft said he was concerned about the lack of existing SMR installations and the unproven nature of the technology. While some nuclear reactors of this scale do exist in other countries, no commercial SMRs have ever been built in the United States.

“This isn’t an energy policy, it’s a Las Vegas craps shoot,” he said during the committee hearing.

In a follow-up interview, Kraft said that SMRs bring with them security concerns, as the smaller installations have different staffing requirements than traditional reactors and use a more highly enriched type of urani-

um. This relative abundance of this uranium, according to Kraft, could incentivize the further proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Some environmentalists also lined up against the bill, worrying that investment in nuclear could take away from investments into renewable energy technology. Sierra Club Illinois chapter director Jack Darin called nuclear energy “at best, a distraction.” Sierra Club was one of the main advocacy organizations that sought Pritzker’s veto of the previous bill.

While the Sierra Club remained opposed to the updated version of the bill, the Illinois Environmental Council – which co-signed a letter requesting the August veto with the Sierra Club—adopted a neutral position on the new bill before it was approved on Thursday.

Rep. Lilian Jimenez, D-Chicago, was one of the eight House Democrats who voted against the bill. She

said that there had not been enough study of the potential drawbacks of SMR development in the state.

“Illinois has plenty of time to assess the risks and costs before opening the door to these projects,” Jimenez said during floor debate. “I believe we should be focusing on that piece before taking this huge leap and this huge step.”

Industry issues Since 2016, five other state legislatures have either repealed or weakened their bans on nuclear construction. Counting Illinois, bans on nuclear construction remain on the books in 11 states.

Several of the states that have lifted their bans in recent years have done so to pave the way for SMR technology. But the biggest player in that industry has seen several upsets in recent weeks.

Addison Trail High School Lettermen’s Club hosts ‘Trunk or Treat’ On Oct. 25, the Addison Trail Lettermen’s Club hosted a Trunk-orTreat event at the school. During the event, local businesses and organizations, as well as Addison Trail athletic teams, clubs and activities, decorated car trunks and distributed treats, hosted games or offered crafts for children in costumes. About 30 groups participated, and more than 200 people attended.

Trunk-or-Treat raised more than $600, which will go toward Lettermen’s Club scholarships to benefit Addison Trail student-athletes, and 25 percent of the money will be donated to Access Sports (whose mission is to provide young athletes with disabilities opportunities to participate in an array of community-based sports in a fun and meaningful way).

Lettermen’s Club is an honorary organization open to Addison Trail student-athletes who have received a varsity letter. The club assists with various school functions and community service initiatives.

Man denied pre-trial release for alleged illegal possession of loaded rifle Defendant allegedly had BAC of 0.172 at time of arrest

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Downers Grove Chief of Police Michael DeVries have announced that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the state’s Gordon Martin motion to deny pre-trial release for a Bolingbrook man accused of illegally possessing a loaded rifle as well as an unloaded

handgun.

Gordon Martin, 23, appeared at First Appearance Court and was charged with two counts of unlawful use or possession of weapons by a felon (Class 2 felony) and one count of defacing identification marks of firearms (Class 3 felony). Martin is also charged with two counts of misdemeanor DUI. On Nov. 1, at approximately 7:38 p.m., Downers Grove police officers responded to a call at the Shell Gas station, located in the 2200 block of

Ogden Avenue, for an individual, later identified as Martin, who was over-filling his gas tank. Upon their arrival, officers observed both tires on the passenger side of Martin’s vehicle were completely deflated and the vehicle was missing its front bumper, which was later found at the intersection of Cross Street and Warrenville Road with a portion of the license plate still attached.

It is alleged that after Martin was placed under arrest for suspected DUI, an assisting officer searched

his vehicle and located a Palmetto .223/5.56 caliber rifle behind the driver’s seat with a loaded magazine and one bullet in the chamber. It is further alleged that the officer also found a Glock 23, .40 caliber handgun with a defaced serial number under the driver’s seat and a magazine for the gun in the center console.

Martin, who has a prior conviction for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, has neither a FOID card nor a concealed carry license. It is further alleged that Martin’s blood-alcohol

content (BAC) was 0.172.

“The danger posed to the public when a convicted felon is found to be in possession of a weapon, let alone a loaded rifle as alleged in this case, is obvious and will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “The law is very clear, as a convicted felon who is ineligible for both a FOID card or a CCL, Mr. Martin is prohibited from owning a firearm and there is absolutely no justification that would allow him to do so, as alleged in this case.”

Health experts recently issued warnings about a cluster of rare hepatitis cases in otherwise healthy children that may be connected to a strain of adenovirus.

Experts are still working to determine the cause of the hepatitis but noted the cases may be associated with an infection of adenovirus type 41.

Adenoviruses are common and can cause symptoms like a cold or flu.

Normally, an infection with adenovirus type 41 can cause diarrhea, vomiting, fever and respiratory symptoms.

It can also cause pink eye and bladder infections. But it’s not usually a cause of hepatitis in healthy children.

Hepatitis is liver inflammation that can be caused by viruses and toxins, as well as some medications and alcohol use.

The recent cases of rare acute hepatitis in children appears to be caused by something other than hepatitis viruses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that cases of pediatric hepatitis were discovered in healthy children who tested negative for hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D and E in the United Kingdom—including some who had adenovirus infection.

Parents should be aware of the symptoms of hepatitis, which can include: • Fever • Fatigue • Loss of appetite • Nausea • Vomiting • Abdominal pain • Dark urine • Light-colored stools • Joint pain

He mentioned that law enforcement had one of the toughest roles, because “Routes had to be shut down,” such as parts of I-90, and they “had to coordinate with other agencies.”

When the president’s visit was over—which Schadle estimated to be about two-and-a-half hours—the whole scene played out in reverse, going from the center back to the airport.

“The Secret Service was great to work with,” the chief praised, noting that first responders got a chance to see the president’s motorcade vehicles the night before the president’s arrival, and also as a thank you, a representative from each agency “got to have a picture taken with the president.”

When asked what that was like, Schadle quipped, “It was a brief conversation, a handshake and photo.”

Looking back on his department’s involvement in a visit from the president to his community, Schadle commented, “It was just a neat experience all the way around.”

The bottom line for Schadle, though, is, “It was an honor to work with the Secret Service and see how they operate.”

“They had a serious job to do,” he added.

As winter settles in, many plants and houseplants that were growing outdoors have returned inside. Before bringing in your plants, consider animal companions, such as dogs and cats, because some plants can make them sick if ingested. Knowing what plants you have and how they will affect your furry friends can go a long way in keeping your family safe.

Plants have several natural defenses to protect themselves against pests, including physical and chemical barriers. Physical barriers might be things like fine hairs on okra, prickles on cucumbers, thorns on roses, and spines on cacti. Chemical barriers are phytochemicals that can cause various issues depending on exposure and toxicity, such as irritation or illness. Bitterness is an example of a chemical barrier.

There are plants of concern for humans, and there is another list for pets. One example of a plant that is safe for human use but can make dogs and cats sick is aloe.

With both existing house plants or when bringing plants inside, there are some ways to limit exposure to keep both your plants and pets safe.

Labeling plants is key, especially when making room for all your plants as you bring them in for winter.

• Keep non-pet-friendly plants in a room out of reach.

• Discard plant debris and clippings into an outdoor receptacle or one away from pets.

Brush Hill Rd. With a $25 donation, community members can dedicate a Love Light to recognize a caregiver, colleague, volunteer, physician or special person. Montini’s season ends with a semifinal loss to Byron Visiting Tigers score a late touchdown to edge the Broncos in Lombard

The Montini Catholic football team’s season ended with Saturday’s 26-20 loss to Byron in an IHSA Class 3A semifinal playoff game in Lombard.

Montini finished its season with an overall record of 9-4. Byron improved to 13-0 and advanced to this Friday’s Class 3A state-championship game against downstate Mount Carmel (12-1) at Hancock Stadium in Normal.

Byron is the No. 1 seed in the 32team Class 3A playoff field. Montini was the No. 6 seed. Mount Carmel (12-1), which beat Roxana 63-48 in Saturday’s other Class 3A semifinal, is the No. 4 seed. Roxana, which completed its season with a 12-1 record, was the No. 3 seed.

The Broncos advanced to the Class 3A semifinal round with three post-season victories. They opened the playoffs with a 48-6 home win over Eureka. They then beat Fairbury’s Prairie Central 44-20 in Fairbury to advance to the quarterfinal round. Montini earned a 27-9 win at Princeton to earn a berth in the Class 3A semifinals.

The Broncos held a slim 20-18 lead over Byron in the middle of the fourth quarter. In a critical sequence, Montini tried a fourth-down pass from near Byron’s 15-yard line.

The Tigers intercepted the pass and returned the ball to midfield. Byron then drove for what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown.

“We should have finished the game out, and we didn’t; that’s on us,” said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky after Saturday’s season-ending loss. “We needed to take control with another score, and offensively, we didn’t execute well enough. That really is the story of the game. In the end, you’ve got to execute, and we didn’t.”

Montini couldn’t have enjoyed a much better start to Saturday afternoon’s contest against Byron, which took place under blue skies and pleasant temperatures. The visiting Tigers received the game’s opening kickoff—a touchback—and started at their own 20-yard line. On their fourth play from scrimmage, the Tigers fumbled the football on a pitchout. Montini junior Nick Irion recovered the loose ball at Byron’s 20-yard line.

The Broncos scored on the next play. Senior Alex Marre broke a couple of tackles near the line of scrimmage and rumbled 20 yards for a touchdown. Senior Cole Stumbaugh converted the extra-point kick to give Montini a 7-0 lead with 10:02 left in the first quarter.

Byron produced a 85-yard touchdown drive later in the first quarter.

The drive ended with a 24-yard scoring run. The Tigers missed the extra-point kick, leaving Montini with a 7-6 lead with 1:13 remaining in the first quarter.

Byron intercepted a Montini pass

early in the second quarter. The Tigers made the interception at their own 24-yard line. Byron sophomore Caden Considine delivered a 49-yard run on the first play of the Tigers’ ensuing offensive drive. Two plays later, Byron scored on a 23-yard touchdown run. The Tigers threw an incomplete pass on the conversion attempt, leaving their lead at 12-7 with 9:03 left in the second quarter.

The Broncos’ next offensive drive ended with an incomplete pass on a fourth-down play from the Tigers’ 31-yard line. Byron’s offense, which didn’t feature any passes from scrimmage during Saturday’s game, proceeded to march 69 yards for a touchdown. The drive ended with a 15-yard touchdown run. The Tigers then tried and failed to convert a twopoint run. After failing to convert a kick, pass play and running play after their three first-half touchdowns, the Tigers held an 18-7 lead with 5:21 left in the first half.

Montini’s offense cut into Byron’s lead with an 80-yard scoring drive that ended with Marre’s 1-yard touchdown run with 20.5 seconds to play in the first half. Stumbaugh missed the extra-point kick, which bounced off the right upright, leaving Byron’s lead at 18-13.

The Broncos regained the lead at the start of the second half. Junior JoJo James fielded the second-half kickoff near his team’s 5-yard line and returned the ball to the Broncos’ 47-yard line. Marre then carried the ball for a 7-yard gain—to the Tigers’ 46-yard line. On the next play, senior George Asay took a handoff, raced to his left, and dashed down the sideline for a 46-yard touchdown run. Stumbaugh made the extra-point kick to give the Broncos a 20-18 lead with 11:13 left in the third quarter.

Montini junior Mateo Barrett recovered a Byron fumble at the Broncos’ 39-yard line with 7:53 left in the third quarter. Montini’s subsequent offensive drive ended with a punt.

Junior Santino Florio caught a long pass from junior quarterback Gaetano Carbonara with about 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Florio caught the ball near the Tigers’ 12-yard line for a gain of 36 yards. The catch counted, but Montini was flagged for a personal foul on the play, pushing the ball back to Byron’s 27-yard line.

The Broncos faced a fourth down play later in the drive. Montini lined up to attempt a field goal on the fourth-down play, but the Broncos didn’t intend to kick the ball; they tried to draw the Tigers offside. After taking a delay of game penalty, Montini tried a pass on the fourth-down play. Considine, a two-way standout for the Tigers, intercepted the pass near his team’s 3-yard line and returned the ball to the 50-yard line with a little more than seven minutes to play.

players and fans then celebrated their victory and berth in the Class 3A state-championship game, while the Broncos faced an abrupt and disappointing end to their season.

After Bukovsky’s brief post-game address to the Broncos, the team’s seniors lined up near the field’s west goal line. The team’s coaches and

underclass players then passed by each of the seniors to thank them for their contributions to the program.

Glenbard East’s girls basketball team began its season with Saturday’s convincing 67-22 win over Glenbard North in the opening round of the Rams’ Rachel Bach Tournament. The event features all four District 87 schools.

Glenbard East concluded the tournament earlier this week with games against Glenbard West and Glenbard South.

The Rams led Glenbard North 17-2 through one quarter of Saturday’s contest. Glenbard East’s lead grew to 34-10 by halftime. The Rams held a 56-14 advantage by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Catey Carney scored a team-leading 20 points for Glenbard East in Saturday’s win. Carney made four 3-point shots—one in each quarter.

At the end of Saturday’s game, Carney was closing in on reaching

the 1,000-point mark in her varsity career. She likely reached the 1,000-point milestone earlier this week in one of the Rams’ last two games of the Rachel Bach Tournament.

Junior Erin Brown and freshman Teagan Murphy scored 11 points each for the Rams in Saturday’s victory over Glenbard North. Murphy made one shot from 3-point range. Freshman Lilly Carver provided nine points, including a 3-point shot at the end of the third quarter. Senior Livia Robbins contributed seven points, including a 3-point shot, while junior Taylour Hodges scored six points. Sophomore Sarah Crocker added two points. Junior Veronica Witt scored one point.

In Saturday’s other game at the tournament, Glenbard West defeated Glenbard South 45-40.

The Broncos opened the five-team, round-robin event with a 79-48 win over Plainfield East on Nov. 16. One night later, Montini defeated Lockport 59-47. The Broncos moved to 3-0 in the invite by trouncing Morgan Park 78-20 on Saturday.

Montini finished the invite earlier this week with Monday’s game against Willowbrook. The Broncos would claim the invite championship with a win over the Warriors.

The Broncos and Plainfield East were tied at 16-16 after one quarter of last week’s game in Villa Park. Montini outscored the Bengals 23-7 in the second quarter to take a 3916 halftime lead. The Broncos’ lead grew to 57-37 by the end of the third quarter.

The Willowbrook girls basketball team opened its 2023-24 season with three games last week.

The Warriors began their season with a 56-20 loss at Libertyville on Nov. 13. Willowbrook then won one of two games at its own Thanksgiving invite. In their first game of the invite, the Warriors lost 51-28 to Lockport on Nov. 16. One night later, Willowbrook defeated Morgan Park 46-24.

The Warriors finished play at their five-team, round-robin invite earlier this week with games against Montini Catholic and Plainfield East.

Montini Catholic High School’s girls basketball team opened its 2023-24 season at Willowbrook High School’s five-team, round-robin Thanksgiving invite. The Broncos began the event with a 79-48 win over Plainfield East on Nov. 16. One night later, Montini beat Lockport 59-47. The Broncos improved to 3-0 in the invite with Saturday’s 78-20 victory over Morgan Park. Montini played its final game of the invite against Willowbrook earlier this week. One photo from last week’s action in Villa Park shows Montini senior Victoria Matulevicius (No. 5 top left), who scored 13 points against Plainfield East and provided 12 points against Lockport. Matulevicius scored 17 points in Saturday’s victory over Morgan Park. Also pictured is Montini junior Nikki Kerstein (No. 3 above right), who scored 19 points against Plainfield East and piled up 20 points against Lockport. Kerstein, who is in her first season with the Broncos, needed 18 points in Friday’s game against Lockport to reach the 1,000-point mark in her varsity career. She reached the milestone when she scored a basket with about one minute left in the game (above left). Kerstein added one more basket in the closing seconds of Friday’s victory.

Willowbrook’s girls basketball team started its 2023-24 season last week. The Warriors lost their season opener at Libertyville on Nov. 13. Willowbrook then began action at its own five-team, round-robin Thanksgiving invite on Nov. 16. The Warriors lost their first game of the event, dropping a 51-28 decision to Lockport. Willowbrook won its next game of the invite, beating Morgan Park 46-24 on Friday. Senior Elle Bruschuk (No. 33 - above) provided 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Warriors during Friday’s victory.

Medinger added three points with a 3-point basket. Woods, senior Tia Kelly and sophomore Joely Maciejewski scored two points each.

Bruschuk scored 12 points and snared 15 rebounds for the Warriors during their win over Morgan Park on Friday. McIntyre supplied eight points and nine rebounds. Gusman contributed six points and 10 rebounds. Medinger, who made one shot from 3-point range for the third straight game, scored seven points.

Woods provided six points, while Kelly and Vish scored five and two points, respectively.

Willowbrook led Morgan Park 11-4 after one quarter and 24-7 at halftime. The Mustangs cut the Warriors’ lead to 30-20 by the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors will open West Suburban Gold Conference play with a home game against Hinsdale South on Nov. 28. Willowbrook’s conference season continues with a Dec. 2 home game against Addison Trail.

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

“Out of nowhere, there was a major gunfight for like 30 seconds,” eyewitness Bartosz Majerczyk told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I’d say, 60 plus rounds. You could tell it was two different groups of people shooting at each other.”

Another witness, who said she was at the celebration, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News “everybody started running” when the gunfire erupted.

“There was a man,” she said. “He fell on top of me. He had a gunshot wound to his leg. It was like something you can’t imagine.”

In a statement, Governor JB Pritzker said he is closely monitoring the shooting.

“Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time when gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Gov. Pritzker said. “As I’ve said time and

health emergency in this country and I remain committed to banning these dangerous weapons and making our state safer for everyone.”

Meadows was described as a “devoted father whose life was tragically taken from us amidst a Juneteenth celebration” on a GoFundMe page set up to provide support to his two young children, RJ and Gabby.

Meadows was “a beacon of love and strength, who fell victim to a devastating crossfire incident that shattered the peace and joy of what should have been a day of celebration.

“Amidst the chaos, Reggie tragically lost his life, leaving an indelible mark of grief on his family and community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other victims who were injured, as we mourn the loss of Reggie, a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.”

Montini Catholic announces newest members of Tri-M Music Honor Society Montini Catholic has announced the newest members of the Bronco Tri-M (Music) Honor Society. The students received ovations Oct. 17 just prior to performing in their first concert of the school year, Montini’s fall Halloween themed concert. The Tri-M Music Honor Society’s (the three “M” initials stand for modern music masters) purpose is to inspire music participation, create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, and promote leadership in the music students of secondary schools.

Gun rights groups to seek Supreme Court ruling on assault weapons Gun rights advocacy groups say they intend to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the state’s assault weapons ban after a federal appeals court on Nov. 3 refused to block enforcement of the law.

In a statement Nov. 4, the Illinois State Rifle Association said it was not surprised by the 7th Circuit panel’s 2-1 decision, which said plaintiffs in the consolidated cases had not met their burden to show they were likely to win in a constitutional challenge to the law.

“It has always been and is our intent to take our case to the U.S. Supreme Court where we believe we can get a favorable ruling for law-abiding gun owners in Illinois,” the organization said. “We will continue to stand up for the Second amendment and Illinois law-abiding gun owners and against our anti-gun Governor Pritzker and General Assembly.”

In addition, the National Foundation for Gun Rights—which provided attorneys involved in the consolidated case—said it will appeal as well.

“Semi-auto bans like Illinois’ strike right at the heart of the Sec-

ond Amendment and are completely inconsistent with multiple Supreme Court precedents,” the organization said in a statement. “We will keep fighting and are preparing to appeal this outrageous ruling.”

The 7th Circuit’s decision on Nov. 3 left in place the state’s assault weapons ban as well as local bans enacted by Cook County and the cities of Chicago and Naperville.

The state of Illinois and the city of Naperville both enacted their bans in response to a mass shooting last year at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park that left seven people dead and dozens more injured or traumatized.

Authorities say the alleged shooter in that incident used a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 semiautomatic rifle and carried three 30-round magazines. That type of gun and magazine are now banned under the state’s assault weapons law.

The majority opinion from the 7th Circuit focused on whether that type of weapon, or others like it, were protected under the Second Amendment.

That opinion, written by Judge Diane Wood and cosigned by Judge Frank Easterbrook, drew a distinction between the types of “bearable”

arms commonly used for self-defense and the type of weapons typically reserved only for military uses.

“The State of Illinois, in the legislation that lies at the heart of these cases, has decided to regulate assault weapons and high-capacity magazines—a decision that is valid only if the regulated weapons lie on the military side of that line and thus are not within the class of arms protected by the Second Amendment.

Several municipalities have done the same,” the majority wrote.

“The plaintiffs in these cases challenge that conclusion. Using the tools of history and tradition to which the Supreme Court directed us … we conclude that the state and the affected subdivisions have a strong likelihood of success in the pending litigation,” the opinion

continued.

However, the majority left open the possibility that the plaintiffs could, at some later stage of the process, produce evidence to show that the banned weapons should be protected under the Second Amendment.

In a dissenting opinion, Judge Michael Brennan said the law goes far beyond banning firearms defined as “assault weapons,” saying it “eliminates the ownership, possession, and use for self-defense of many of the most commonly owned semiautomatic handguns, shotguns, rifles, and magazines.”

“The Second Amendment ‘right of the people to keep and bear Arms’ is not a second-class right,” he wrote. “Yet the state of Illinois and several Illinois municipalities have

categorically banned law-abiding citizens from keeping and bearing a sweeping range of firearms and magazines.”

The U.S. Supreme Court has already agreed to hear at least three other gun-related cases during the 2023-2024 term. Among those is a case it heard on Nov. 7 challenging a federal law banning the possession of guns by people who are subject to domestic violence restraining orders.

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

Florida man charged with leading police on high-speed chase

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

“Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time when gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Gov. Pritzker said. “As I’ve said time and

time again, gun violence is a public health emergency in this country and I remain committed to banning these dangerous weapons and making our state safer for everyone.”

Meadows was described as a “devoted father whose life was tragically taken from us amidst a Juneteenth celebration” on a GoFundMe page set up to provide support to his two young children, RJ and Gabby.

Meadows was “a beacon of love and strength, who fell victim to a devastating crossfire incident that shattered the peace and joy of what should have been a day of celebration.

“Amidst the chaos, Reggie tragically lost his life, leaving an indelible mark of grief on his family and community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other victims who were injured, as we mourn the loss of Reggie, a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.”
