District 88 receives $249,000 grant to support mental health services for students

Plans are to expand use of ‘ReferralGPS’

District 88 Superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente and school officials of District 88 announced last week that the district had recently received a $249,000 grant to support post-pandemic child and adolescent health.

The grant was awarded by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

The funding is primarily from the CDC’s COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Supplemental Funding program authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), plus $500,000 in state dollars, according to the state’s web site. It is being offered to help schools and local agencies improve student care through workforce enhancements, developing frameworks to prevent adverse childhood experiences, interventions to assist children suffering from trauma and training for medical and school staff to expand adolescent mental health resources.

“At District 88, the safety, health and well-being of students and staff is our No. 1 priority,” Barbanente said.

She said the district would use funds from the grant to further connect students and their families with community mental health services through expanding its use of ReferralGPS, a free service that assists students, staff and community members in finding local treatment for mental health and substance use needs.

Along with a searchable database, ReferralGPS provides bilingual Care Navigation to guide families through

processes related to insurance, provider availability, wait times and scheduling. The program accepts a variety of private and public insurance and also is available to those who are uninsured or underinsured.

To access ReferralGPS, District 88 students and families can contact the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) staff at Addison Trail or Willowbrook, or go to referralgps.com/find-help/dupage88 (a secure, confidential website).

“We know building relationships precedes learning, and we continue to focus on connecting with all students,” said Barbanente. “For students to achieve academically, we must first meet their needs outside of the classroom – including providing mental health and social-emotional assistance. This grant will help fill that critical need, and we’re grateful to receive this funding to support our learning community.”

Three Chicago men charged with burglary from Lombard liquor store DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Tom Wirsing have announced that charges have been filed against three Chicago men for allegedly stealing more than $6,100 worth of merchandise from a Travonta Lombard liquor store.

Turner Travonta Turner, 27; Deandre Richardson, 26; and Jonnie Fort, 27, appeared at First Appearance Court, where Judge Joshua Dieden denied the state’s motion to deny pre-trial release.

All three men are charged with one count of burglary (Class 2 felony) and one count

It is alleged that on Oct. 25, at approximately 10:33 p.m., officers with the Lombard Police Department responded to Lombard Liquors in the 400 block of W. 22nd St. regarding a retail theft that Deandre had just occurred.

Richardson It is alleged that three men, later identified as Turner, Richardson and Fort, entered the liquor store and immediately began putting bottles of liquor in bags that they had brought with them. It is alleged that after the men had filled the bags with approximately $6,123.29 worth of merchandise, they exited

the store without paying for the items.

It is further alleged that once outside the store, the men entered a Ford Escape and fled the scene. A short time later, troopers with the Illinois State Police located the Ford on I-290 eastbound and initiated Jonnie pursuit, which ended when Fort the Ford crashed in Chicago near I-290 and Independence Boulevard. After the crash, it is alleged that the occupants of the vehicle fled on foot but were all taken into custody following a brief pursuit.

The next court date for all three men is scheduled for Nov. 20, for arraignment.

As a condition of their pre-trial release, the defendants must refrain from entering any Lombard Liquors store.

Montini Catholic students get a delicious ‘taste’ of Chicago history Students in Andrew Weisenburger’s History of Chicago class got a ‘taste’ of The Windy City’s cultural history on Thursday, Oct. 19 when students were treated to Vienna Beef hotdogs and all the traditional Chicago toppings. (A proper Chicago dog is an all-beef frankfurter (such as Vienna Beef) in a poppy seed bun, topped with yellow mustard, neon-green sweet pickle relish, chopped white onion, tomato slices, a dill pickle spear, pickled sport peppers and celery salt.)

“The Chicago Dog both encapsulates how Chicago was built, and what makes this city great,” said Matthew Spina in his article, “A History of the Esteemed Chicago-Style Hot Dog.”

The iconic style hotdog has an interesting story beginning around the end of the 19th century, when Chicago was experiencing a growing German population leading to its domination of the meat packing industry.

“This was an opportunity for my students to learn about the cultures that have contributed to Chicago’s history and how those are represented through the various toppings,” said Weisenburger, who challenged the students to ‘Chicago hotdog trivia’ while they ate. “There are so many ways of reaching students and being impactful and food is one of those avenues. It’s not just a novelty but rather gives the students something tangible to connect with what they have learned.”

Addison Trail hosts annual Fine Arts Showcase Music department head Mark Corey honored

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, Addison Trail hosted its annual Fine Arts Showcase.

The event featured performances by Guitar Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Blazer Choir, Concert Choir, Marching Blazers and Orchesis, and members of the Theatre Department served as emcees for the evening. An exhibition of student artwork also was displayed.

It was a highlight of the showcase when AT Music department head and band director Mark Corey was recognized by District 88 superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente for his nearly 30 years of service to the District 88 learning community. Corey will retire at the end of the 2023-24 school year. He was named as an Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Those Who Excel award winner last year (he

received an Award of Meritorious Service in the Teacher category).

During Corey’s time with the school, enrollment in band has nearly tripled, and two jazz ensembles have been added. Under Corey’s direction, Addison Trail ensembles have performed at numerous festivals and venues throughout the U.S. Along with teaching at Addison Trail, Corey leads a music education course at Elmhurst University that focuses on integrating technology with music instruction. He also serves as a consultant, facilitator and trainer for integrating curriculum design with the internet, developing online content to supplement the traditional classroom experience.

As a freelance musician, Corey’s performing credits include numerous local engagements as

a sideman for various bands, as well as jingles for national campaigns. He has played with Nelson Riddle, Curtis Mayfield, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole and Aretha Franklin.

Corey has been awarded the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award and is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), National Band Association (NBA) and Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA), where he has been an audition and festival host, All-State Auditions Chair, District Band Representative, District President and State President. He is on the Teachers Advisory Panel for MusicFirst Classroom as well, which is an online suite of music applications designed to deliver instruction and assessment of musical skills in an online format.

Slices of life

Maintaining the personal in an impersonal world By definition, I am an introvert.

I’m usually OK with time alone and minimal interactions with other humans. I enjoy conversations within my own head and maybe, perhaps have a significant relationship with both my phone and my laptop.

However, lately I’ve noticed the world has sort of taken this concept and injected it with steroids.

In just the last decade or so, things have changed. COVID fueled these changes, but they were occurring even before the pandemic. Gradually—or perhaps not so gradually— we are losing our day-to-day human connections. Our world is becoming more and more impersonal.

For most of my lifetime friendships used to involve actually meeting in-person—for lunch, happy hour or play dates.

Now I have friends online whom I’ve never met. They live in different cities and different states than me. Sometimes I forget who they are and wonder how we ever became “friends” in the first place.

But I feel close to quite a few of them; I just don’t know if we’ll ever meet in person.

Speaking of meetings, how did we exist before the likes of Zoom?

These next few are going to date me (and not like going out to the Steve Martin movie called “The Jerk” with a cute guy in high school).

My mom never learned how to pump her own gas. She grew up and grew into adulthood having someone pump it for her, and she liked it that way.

When the gas guy left his post, he was replaced by a new gas guy - my dad, who made sure my mom’s tank was also at least halffull.

Remember standing in line for concert tickets? Sometimes we’d sleep on the sidewalk. Lordy, lordy, what we’d do to see REO Speedwagon, Styx or Journey live.

Now we have the privilege of picking our exact seats without ever leaving the comfort of our living rooms—until concert day.

They haven’t been able to figure out how to provide us with the true concert experience from our homes. Not yet, but I’m sure it’s coming.

My daughter and her family haven’t been to the grocery store in more than a year. There is no

need. They order online and do a pick up at the store without ever leaving their car. There is no need for human contact—just a credit card.

Shopping in general has changed. I recently furnished an entire house online. The same goes for kitchen appliances. I live in a rural area, so my experience may be different from someone in a big city, but my appliances weren’t even available to see at the appliance store that’s more than an hour’s drive from my home. So I read the online descriptions about features, picked out the models of my choice, measured carefully and had them delivered. I’m happy to say they all fit!

Remember when banking was in in-person thing? A few months ago, I needed a document notarized so had to visit a real, live brick and mortar bank. I hadn’t been in one for at least a year.

I recently bought a new home and had the option to do the closing online.

I wonder how long it will be before we can get something notarized online. Or perhaps get married online?

Why meet the person in-person when you can marry them first?

How far are we going to take this? I’m almost afraid of the answer to this semi-facetious question.

I think we, as humans, crave real-alive connections, and there is nothing the Internet or our phones can ever do to replicate that. And whether we realize it or not, they just might be contributing to our loneliness.

How sad, and lonely, is that?

My advice? Close your laptop.

Put down your phone. Go outside.

Say hello to your neighbor. Start a conversation.

Even if you are an introvert.

Especially so.

Take it from me. We all need each other.

Introducing the bipartisan Opportunity to Compete Act

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Recently, I was proud to introduce the bipartisan Opportunity to Compete Act with Congressman John James (R-MI) to ensure that workers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs) rather than earning a bachelor’s degree receive fair consideration in hiring.

While automation and other technical advances in hiring have made application screening easier for employers, they have also contributed significantly to the trend of requiring degrees for jobs that previously did not require them.

As American workers and employers seek to meet the rapidly changing needs of the 21st century, we must strive to eliminate any discrimination against workers who meet every qualification for the jobs for which they apply to, except for having a bachelor’s degree.

Our bipartisan legislation will tackle this problem by ensuring prospective employees are evaluated based on whether they have the relevant skills and experience to do the job, rather than if they hold a four-year degree.

I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get this legislation passed and signed into law swiftly.

While efforts are under way to reopen the Rafah crossing on the border between Gaza and Egypt to allow for the safe evacuation of civilians and allow additional aid in to help Palestinians, I wrote a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week requesting his immediate help in ensuring the safe evacuation of several of my constituents and their families who are currently in unsafe situations in Israel and Gaza.

Elgin native Emilee Abuhamad Rauschenberger, the niece of Elgin City Council member Carol Rauschenberger, and her family, have been among the hundreds of Americans trapped in southern Gaza. My office and I have been in close coordination with the State Department to speed up the safe exit of those in harm’s way in both Israel and Gaza, and of both Palestinian and Israeli descent.

I welcome the news that the State Department has worked with Egypt, Israel, and the United Nations to allow some aid to go through Rafah, and I am committed to ensuring additional aid currently on standby on the Egyptian side of Rafah be allowed to enter into Gaza as soon as possible.

Passing the president’s supplemental funding request On Oct. 21, President Joe Biden announced his request for supplemental funding from Congress, a move that includes support for critical domestic programs, including childcare, nutrition assistance, public health, research and development, and national security, while also helping the United States provide the necessary security assistance to Israel, support Israeli efforts to secure the release of hostages, and provide humanitarian aid to civilians impacted by the war in Israel and in Gaza.

This supplemental funding request includes many priorities that affect us directly and serve our community’s needs. The Biden Administration requested additional funds to strengthen the American Connectivity Program, an initiative to provide free and discounted high-speed internet for households, ensuring broadband access is easily accessible for everyone.

The Administration also requested funds to keep more than 220,000 childcare providers open and stable at a time when many face closure because of financial difficulties. This support would help buoy a system that cares for as many as 10 million children across the nation.

I look forward to working with the Biden Administration and my House colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come to a comprehensive, bipartisan agreement to fund the government and invest in critical national priorities— including our national security.

Hello, I’m a nosy old lady from Lombard. Lived here many, many years. I see where Aldi is going in, and I’m just curious. Does anybody know anything more about it? All I’ve done is just see the signs and it looks like it’s going to be a very big store. Anyway, just very curious if anyone knows when it will be open for shopping. Thank you. Bye. Editor’s note: The following is a response from Village of Lombard officials: “The proposed Aldi grocery store will be located within the Roosevelt Road Shopping Center at 205 W. Roosevelt Road.

The store will occupy a 21,000 square foot space that was previously occupied by X-Sport Fitness.

Construction work is currently in progress and is expected to be finished by fall, after all buildout activities are completed.” *** I’m a senior living alone. I’m struggling in many ways, especially with technology. I often feel inadequate. I don’t have anyone to teach or show me things. I can’t go to the grocery store without feeling bad, but I don’t know about digital coupons, apps, PIN numbers, pass codes, ID codes; all I want to do is get sale prices. If only others would understand and make things easier, I would sure appreciate it. I’m not stupid. I’m simply getting old and unfortunately, I’m lonely. I would appreciate it if grocery stores would stop using apps and digital coupons. I can pay cash, but I need sale prices. This is hard for us seniors who don’t have anyone to help us with things in everyday life that are changing faster than we can keep up with.

The Lombardian publishes those programs in Coming Events (see below). *** I know that the law changed so individuals asking for money on street corners will not be ticketed unless they commit an offense—such as blocking traffic or harassing motorists—but what about on private property? There is one store I frequent where one or more individuals have been hanging out, sitting next to the building, blocking the walkway, and people have to walk around them to get into the store. Can management or owners request that they leave?

I am not heartless, but I have been harassed when I do not give money, and have been rebuffed when I suggest visiting our local food pantry for help. What is the village’s policy?

However, private business or property owners may choose to ask individuals to leave private property. If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact the Lombard Police Department at 630-873-4400.” *** So ComEd and Nicor want to raise rates again, saying it is for infrastructure. Well, at least for ComEd, that infrastructure is pretty awful, considering all the outages I have experienced here in Lombard. And note; the qualifications for LIHEAP are so strict that it is difficult to qualify, considering they use your gross income, not net income. I never see that taxed part of my gross income, and the net income is what I have to live on. Please, please, be a voice for us. *** Through the entire construction work on North Grace Street, there was one constant: the bearded man from Lombard was first on site in the morning and the last to leave in the evening. He patrolled North Grace from Prairie to North Avenue on foot or in his vehicle. I think because of him things ran as smoothly as possible. Great job. *** The state is planning to issue stickers to replace the plastic I-Pass transponders. Environmental concerns aside, I predict that is going to create a big headache for many of us. Some of us rent a car, and don’t want to pay extra fees for the rental transponder, for one; or have more than one car registered under the transponder.

The sticker is not transferable, as it will not work if removed, according to the state. Another example of big government getting in its own way at our expense. Let our voices be heard in Springfield, and stop this nonsense. *** Biden just said he wants $100 billion for Israel and Ukraine. Here’s a thought. Biden supposedly had about 81 million voters in 2020. 100 billion divided by 81 million is about 1,235.

So if every Biden voter, including Joe, Dr. Jill and Hunter, kicks in $1,235, there’s your $100 billion.

And if the economy is so great under Biden, as we are told, that should be no problem. *** People complaining about open borders and Biden’s policies need to check the facts. We have a legal obligation to accept people who consider themselves refugees (1951 Refugee Convention). All those people flood-

ing our borders from places like Venezuela or Ukraine are applying for refugee status. We are obligated to take them in while they wait for their case to be investigated. This is not something Biden thought up! He did, however, institute a policy requiring migrants to make an appointment to approach the border. Crossing illegally can lead to a high bar for asylum seekers and the risk of sped-up deportation. This has diminished the number of “sneakers.” There are currently 100,000 migrants waiting in northern Mexico. And, by the way, if those people do get refugee status and apply for a green card, they cannot vote. Only U.S. citizens can vote so there is no Democrat conspiracy of letting everyone in and forcing them to be liberal. It’s pretty obvious that we need a massive change to our immigration laws, but this Congress will never get that done. They had problems electing a speaker! *** So the Republicans finally have a speaker after three weeks of shooting themselves in the foot. Woopie.

Matt Gaetz orchestrated getting rid of Kevin McCarthy. It accomplished nothing. Why didn’t this blowhard Gaetz run for speaker himself if he thinks he has all the answers? Gaetz should face a primary challenge along with the others who voted along with him. *** Many seniors don’t want to be bothered for trick-or-treating. It would be nice if Lombard published a suggestion that “If you want trickor-treaters to come to your house, turn on your outside lights. Thank you.

Muriel Anderson to release CD and board game at annual concert Muriel Anderson is returning to her native Downers Grove for her 32nd hometown concert Saturday, Nov. 25, where she will be introducing a new CD and a board game—both of which stem from the sailing adventures she and her fiancé, “Cap’n” Bryan Allen, experienced over the last two years.

Each year, the audience is delighted with a new theme, which this year is related to sailing.

Preparing to introduce her new CD, “Sailing Dreams,” Anderson explained that the songs on her CD are rooted in sailing trips the couple took from Long Island, N.Y., to Penobscot Bay, Maine, on the vessel “Avocet.”

Each of the songs relates to the trips, she added.

“We had a lot of adventures, some of which have been captured in the songs,” she said.

For instance, the song “Sailing Dream” came entirely in a dream.

Anderson said she woke up with a complete melody, lyrics, musical instruments and a vocal that sounded like country star Suzy Bogguss.

Anderson continued: “So … I asked Suzy Bogguss if she would sing the song on the album and she said yes!”

In another song, “Tides,” Anderson said she thought of parallels to tides and her own life “just because they [tides] come up so fast … I was thinking about the tides in my life.”

In that particular song, renowned guitarist Tommy Emmanuel will be the guest singer.

Along with a new CD, Anderson is introducing a board game that also evolved from her sailing trips.

“Bryan first had the idea for the board came,” she related, describing that it is a unique game in which there are two winners: “one who has the most experiences (both good and bad), and one who gets the most fish.”

The game revolves around sailing, the geographical area where the couple sailed and also ties into the music on the CD. Each year for the concert, Anderson chooses a guest musician, and this year it is a Chicago-based group called Small Potatoes, consisting of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso.

Anderson said she chose them in part because “I remember interviewing them years ago,” when she had a cable TV show here called “Offstage.”

She saw that they had recently performed at the Fox Valley Folk and Storytelling Festival and asked them to be her guests for the 2023

When asked what kind of music the duo will perform, Anderson responded, “Western swing, Celtic, funny tunes, and probably a sea shanty or two.They are just charming people!”

Anderson has roots in Lombard, having studied guitar with Anne Jones at the Jones School of Folk Music in Lombard.

Anderson hosts the All Star Guitar Night and created the non-profit Music for Life Alliance to enable young people to participate in music education. A portion of this concert supports the Music for Life Alliance.

Anderson’s concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, live at the First Congregational Church UCC, 1047 Curtiss St., Downers Grove.

Tickets are $28, which include a chance to win a new Eastman guitar, courtesy of Tobias Music, and other prizes.

The in-person concert will include hot apple cider, courtesy of Trader Joe’s, and homemade cookies.

Tickets for the live-stream performance are $18, and include a chance to win the Eastman guitar and other prizes.

when the officer located the vehicle, later determined to be driven by Castro, Castro put his car in reverse and proceeded southbound on Route 83. It is alleged that as the officer pursued, Castro reached speeds of approximately 107 mph in a 45-mph zone and disobeyed three traffic lights.

It is alleged that near 16th Street, Castro completed a U-turn and continued driving northbound on Route 83 reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph in a 35-mph construction zone, at which time the pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned in a school parking lot. Officers responded to the school parking and at approximately 8:42 p.m., located Castro approximately one block away from the school. He was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with the officers.

Castro’s next court appearance is scheduled July 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Telander.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of leading Omar Castro police on a high-speed chase.

Omar Castro, 22, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $100,000.

Castro is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer (Class 4 felony) and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses including two counts of aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and driving while license suspended, all Class A misdemeanors.

“Out of nowhere, there was a major gunfight for like 30 seconds,” eyewitness Bartosz Majerczyk told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “I’d say, 60 plus rounds. You could tell it was two different groups of people shooting at each other.”

Another witness, who said she was at the celebration, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News “everybody started running” when the gunfire erupted.

“There was a man,” she said. “He fell on top of me. He had a gunshot wound to his leg. It was like something you can’t imagine.”

In a statement, Governor JB Pritzker said he is closely monitoring the shooting.

“Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time when gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Gov. Pritzker said. “As I’ve said time and

health emergency in this country and I remain committed to banning these dangerous weapons and making our state safer for everyone.”

Meadows was described as a “devoted father whose life was tragically taken from us amidst a Juneteenth celebration” on a GoFundMe page set up to provide support to his two young children, RJ and Gabby.

Meadows was “a beacon of love and strength, who fell victim to a devastating crossfire incident that shattered the peace and joy of what should have been a day of celebration.

“Amidst the chaos, Reggie tragically lost his life, leaving an indelible mark of grief on his family and community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other victims who were injured, as we mourn the loss of Reggie, a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.”

As newlyweds on a three-month pup tent camping trip through Europe in a VW bug, to family ski vacations all over western North America, to hosting group trips, to volunteering at Habitat for Humanity and Heifer International around the globe, Ken always had a carry-on bag ready with the essentials. He visited all 7 continents, almost every state, and over 70 countries.

Ken also hosted multiple foreign visitors in his home in Lombard for extended stays including people from both Russia and the Ukraine.

He remained in contact with many people around the world until his death.

His globetrotting led him to marry Nion Parmuljako in 2008, a Thai national. After that he spent several months a year in Thailand on a small farm in the foothills of the Petchaboon mountains, and several in Lombard. Despite a language barrier Ken was as loved in Thailand as in Lombard and by most people that

KENNETH LEROY SCHROEDER Kenneth Leroy Schroeder of Lombard, Illinois, died on Friday, October 20, in Bettendorf Iowa.

He was in vigorous good health until one week before his death and passed due to complications from a fall.

He is survived by his current wife Nion Parmuljako of Nong Phi, Thailand; his son Reid of Bettendorf, Iowa (wife Chelsea); daughter Petra of Denver, Colorado (husband Dan); and five grandchildren. He was the beloved husband of Audrey Schroeder, nee Thiese, before her death.

Ken was one of 3 children born to Leroy Schroeder and his wife Lucille, nee Moellering. He entered this life on a sweltering hot July 2, 1936, in the family farmhouse 4 miles north of Garnavillo, Iowa. It was so hot that Leroy made the unusual drive to Dubuque to purchase an electric fan for his wife and baby’s comfort.

He grew up during the depression and Second World War, listening to news on a Zenith radio, working hard with his brother Stanley and sister Katherine. He spent hours on horseback and milking cows by hand. He showed animals at the Clayton County Fair with the 4H club. This childhood molded the humble and gracious attitude that formed his core.

He attended the one-room Equity country school through 5th grade then began town school where he met his future wife Audrey by pulling her hair while riding the bus.

They remained together through High School, College and 45 years of marriage.

He attended Iowa State Univer-

sity for one year where he was in a fraternity and ROTC, Luther College for one year and finally earned a BA degree from Wartburg College in 1958. College graduation was followed by marriage that summer on June 6th, 1959.

To pay for the engagement ring Ken trapped mink and sold them to Sears Roebuck. The couple moved to Maywood, Illinois, to attend the Chicago Lutheran Seminary where he graduated with a Master of Divinity. He served a one-year pastoral internship in Austin, Texas, where he heard Martin Luther King Jr. speak in an intimate setting.

He was ordained on June 17th, 1962, as Pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville, Illinois, where he served for 11 years. In Steeleville he learned to be a pastor, to dance at the American Legion Hall, and became a father. He developed his counseling abilities at Menard State and Marion Federal prisons.

In 1973 the family moved to Lombard, Illinois, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he enjoyed his most inspired pastoral years.

Many people sought his counsel.

Under his leadership the church grew, built an addition, and retired the mortgage. He was a licensed school bus driver and called to substitute drive for the local school district and church outings.

He was a family man and thoroughly proud of his wife and children. He peppered his well-received sermons with stories of the ups and downs of family life. He read a lot and encouraged his children to do the same. He retired in 1998 at age of 62 in hopes of starting the final chapters with more free time.

Audrey’s cancer interrupted the plan but he faithfully nursed her for three years until her premature death in 2003.

Ken was a seeker, an adventurer, and he loved the exhilaration of meeting new people, sharing stories, and connecting with others. He looked to find common ground. He was a lifelong learner, reader and

Elmhurst police arrest driver who allegedly fled from stolen car Apprehension swift, thanks to K-9s, drones, chief says

On Monday, Oct. 23, at approximately 11:53 p.m. an Elmhurst police officer spotted a Ford Fusion sedan driving southbound on IL Route 83 at St. Charles Road. According to police, this vehicle had been reported as stolen on Saturday, Oct. 14, to the Chicago Police Department.

As the officer followed behind the vehicle, it reportedly turned westbound onto Washington Street in Villa Park. The officer activated emergency lights to stop the vehicle and the reportedly stolen car pulled into a residential driveway on Riverside Drive in Villa Park. The driver of the vehicle then allegedly ran from the car towards the rear yards of the

neighborhood.

Elmhurst and Villa Park police set up a perimeter and searched the area with a police K-9 unit and public safety drone. Police said the suspect was located by officers hiding in a shed belonging to a nearby resident.

The suspect was transported to the Elmhurst Police Department and the stolen vehicle was impounded. An additional set of license plates and a replica pellet pistol were located in the vehicle, police said.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the suspect, Maurice Sutton Jr., 31, of Hanover Park. was charged with possession of stolen motor vehicle (Class 2 felony) and obstructing a police officer (Class A misdemeanor). Sutton was

transported to the DuPage County Judicial Center and appeared at First Appearance Court on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

The state’s motion to deny Sutton Jr.’s pre-trial release was granted, and his next court appearance was set for Monday, Nov. 13.

Elmhurst Police Chief talks about tracking suspects with K-9s, drones In a subsequent interview, Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean commented on the usage of K-9 officers and drones.

“Searching for felony suspects hiding in the dark is not only difficult work; it can be dangerous.” he said.

“In the past, police officers would

fan out with flashlights to search for criminals—the officers not knowing until the last moment when they spot a suspect.

“K-9’s have been a great tool to assist officers more effectively track running suspects. However, even with a K-9, officers do not know if the suspect is hiding around the next corner or on top of a shed. EPD now uses our public safety drone as a first-response tool in combination with K-9 units to more efficiently locate fleeing suspects and missing persons.

“The drone is able to see suspects hiding in darkness and the K-9 can track to buildings where the drone cannot see. Together, they allow police officers to more accurately

search large areas in less time, resulting in criminal suspects being apprehended in a safe coordinated manner in our community.”

McLean then explained the usage of drones, what training is required and who is authorized to operate them.

“The Elmhurst Police Department has five police officers that are also drone pilots,” he said. “Each has completed a 40-hour unmanned aerial vehicle course certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and passed the FAA licensing exam for drone operators.

Our drone pilots receive ongoing flight training hours throughout the year in addition to emergency incident callouts.”

Woman gets four years for biting Glendale Heights police officer DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh sentenced Tyler Russell, 27, formerly of Glendale Heights, to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for biting a Glendale Heights police officer as she was being taken into custody.

On Aug. 24, a jury found Russell guilty of one count of aggravated battery to a police officer (Class 1 felony) and three counts of aggravated battery (Class 2 felony) following

a three-day-long trial.

On June 20, 2020, at approximately 9:34 a.m., officers with the Glendale Heights Police Department responded to a call in the 500 block of Gregory Tyler Russell Avenue for a report of two people arguing in a parking lot.

The officer was transported to a local hospital for medical attention and has since recovered from his injury.

“Day in and day out, our police officers respond to calls not knowing what they will find once they get there,” Berlin said. “It is an extremely difficult and dangerous job

Major milestone for Health Department’s RxBOX: 82.5 tons of medication collected The DuPage County Health Department’s medication take-back program, known as RxBOX, is ending and will transition to a new vendor on Dec. 1.

Throughout the 14-year program, more than 82.5 tons (165,000 pounds) of unwanted, expired, or unused medications were safely disposed of, preventing drug misuse while also protecting our groundwater resources. On Oct. 18, partners from law enforcement agencies throughout DuPage County participating in the RxBOX program attended the final drop-off collection sponsored by DCHD. The program will now transition to a new management vendor, INMAR Intelligence.

The change will be seamless for DuPage County residents, and they can continue to drop off unwanted medications at the participating law enforcement agencies.

“Unused medicines can end up in our landfills and waterways as well as in the hands of youth or others seeking prescription drugs for non-medical reasons,” said Adam Forker, executive director, DuPage County Health Department. “I am proud of the Health Department’s work to protect the health of our community and am grateful to our partners who made this program possible.”

This new program is fully funded by pharmaceutical manufacturers.

medications that were being obtained from people’s residences and to protect surface and groundwater resources by providing an alternative to disposing of them in the trash and flushing them down the toilet.

Funding to implement the program with 12 law enforcement agencies was initially provided by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA).

The next seven participants were initially funded by DuPage County.

The first year’s collection totaled 1,815 pounds. As the program grew and gained community recognition and support, subsequent collections increased in volume with a record high of more than 15,000 pounds being collected in 2019.

Law enforcement agencies have observed a wide range of material collected including potentially dangerous items like morphine, oxycodone, and fentanyl patches.

First week of veto session wraps up with little legislative movement Lawmakers to return to Capitol Nov. 7 to address lingering issues CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

Lawmakers are heading back to their districts after three days of legislative session in Springfield last week that saw little movement on several major initiatives.

They will have a week off before returning to Springfield on Nov. 7 for the second of their annual two-week veto session during which they consider bills the governor vetoed since they last met in the spring.

When they return, they’ll consider measures including reforms to the state’s nuclear policy and a potential extension of a controversial tax credit program that funds private school scholarships.

Halal and kosher foods In a 43-15 vote Oct. 25, the Senate passed a measure sponsored by Sen. Ram Villivalam, D-Chicago, that would require schools and state-run facilities like prisons to offer kosher and halal food options for those with religious dietary restrictions.

The bill, Senate Bill 457, mirrors a similar proposal from Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid, D-Bridgeview, which Gov. JB Pritzker vetoed this summer due to technical concerns about the contracting language.

The new bill would require the State Board of Education to identify and contract with vendors to provide kosher and halal food options to school districts. Once those master contracts are executed—provided that the General Assembly has allocated funding to do so—school districts would be required to adopt procedures regarding ordering, preparing, and serving prepackaged meals offered under the statewide contracts.

Schools would not be required to offer these foods until ISBE enters

“There are districts that are doing this right now,” Villivalam said in an interview. “They have the option to continue to do it with the contracts they have entered into or they can enter into the master contract that’s created.”

The bill was met with some pushback from Republican senators, who questioned the reasoning for some of the penalties for violating the bill’s provisions.

Villivalam said during debate Wednesday that those and other concerns can be addressed through future amendments in the House or with follow-up legislation when the lawmakers return in the spring.

Energy policy Rep. Larry Walsh, D-Elwood, announced Oct. 25 that he would not pursue a veto override vote for a policy that would have granted downstate electric utilities—notably Ameren Illinois—the “right of first refusal” for transmission line con-

struction, allowing them to have first crack at the projects.

Pritzker this summer vetoed the portion of a broader bill containing the proposal, citing concerns about stifling competition and increasing consumer prices.

While he conceded the veto override, Walsh said he will push for a broader bill that would provide the right of first refusal across the whole state in the spring.

Pritzker also vetoed a bill earlier this year that would have partially lifted the state’s 1980s-era moratorium on new nuclear construction, writing in his veto message that it didn’t include sufficient protections for the “health and safety of Illinois residents who would live and work around these new reactors.”

But since then, the original bill’s sponsor has introduced a new bill that she hopes addresses these concerns and Pritzker has indicated that he’s open to supporting a bill allowing some nuclear construction.

“I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to get a bill that does that,” Pritzker

said. “We should be able to. We’re all competent adults who understand what the goal is and I believe there’s a strong majority of people who want to do this.”

Private school scholarships While there wasn’t a formal vote on the subject, advocates for the Invest in Kids tax credit program for donors to private school scholarship funds flooded the Statehouse this week to rally support for renewing the program before it’s scheduled to expire at the end of the year.

The program, which has been the subject of partisan debate for several years and was originally introduced as a concession to Republicans during the creation of the state’s evidence-based funding model for schools, was not extended during this year’s budget negotiations.

Hundreds of advocates—including school uniform-clad children and a few nuns—rallied inside the Capitol, with their loud chanting in the rotunda at times interrupting debate on unrelated bills inside the House

chamber.

Rep. Angelica Guerrero-Cuellar, D-Chicago, introduced a bill this week that would extend the program until 2028 with a $50 million budget cap, down from the $75 million it has received in recent years. It would also limit the individual tax credits to be 100 percent credit for the first $5,000 and a lower percentage credit for any donations beyond $5,000. It was previously 75 percent on all donations.

Guerrero-Cuellar’s House Bill 4194 hasn’t been considered by any committees, meaning it cannot clear both chambers with just three session days left on the calendar this year. The topic will likely come up for discussion when lawmakers return in November, but for any negotiated extension of the program to pass in that second week of lawmakers’ session, the proposals would have to be moved to a bill that’s further along in the legislative process.

DuPage County Health Department offering 2023-2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine for eligible children

Recently, the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) began offering the updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine to eligible children in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program.

Children who are VFC eligible include those children: 1.) who do not have insurance, 2.) with insurance that does not cover immunizations, or 3.) who are Medicaid eligible.

Questions about the availability of specific childhood vaccines or clinic schedules should be directed to DCHD at 630-682-7400. For additional providers who offer vaccines through the VFC Program, visit

the VFC Provider Search. “Updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccines are a safe and effective way to prevent COVID-19 and keep kids healthy,” said Adam Forker, executive director of the DuPage County Health Department.

Addison Trail’s football team, playing in its first postseason contest since 2014, traveled to Lane Stadium in Chicago last Friday and upended Chicago Lincoln Park, 21-18, in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.

The Blazers, who won four of their last five regular-season contests to punch their ticket to the postseason, host Glenbard East (9-1) at 6 p.m.

Friday in a second-round matchup.

Glenbard East is the No. 9 seed in Class 7A, while the Blazers are seeded 25th.

Lincoln Park, which won the Chicago Public League’s White-Northwest Conference, entered last Friday’s contest with an 8-1 record and had been averaging over 28 points per game while holding its opponents to an average of 7.4 points per game.

AT’s victory last Friday also was its first postseason win since 2014.

That year, the Blazers defeated Lake Zurich in a first-round game.

Addison Trail had the second-best overall record among West Suburban Conference Gold Division teams this season at 7-3. The 2014 playoff squad finished with a 9-2 record.

Additionally, this year marks the first time since 2014 that the Blazers have won more than four games in a season.

Chris Bazant took over as the Blazers’ head coach in 2020, and endured three tough campaigns prior to 2023. The past three seasons, AT was a combined 3-21, and had a winless season in 2021 (0-9).

Bazant was named Chicago Bears High School Coach of the Week for Week 8.

Leading the way this season for the Blazers offensively has been sophomore quarterback Nico Dill, senior running backs Arturo Quiroga and Damari Jones, and junior wideouts Casey Carlson and Raja Corhn.

Dominic Renc, a junior, has been a mainstay defensively in the secondary.

Rams beat Harlem 24-0 to advance to second round of playoffs

Glenbard East will face Addison Trail in this Friday’s second-round game in Addison

The Glenbard East football team opened the 2023 post-season with Friday’s 24-0 victory over Machesney Park’s Harlem High School in an IHSA Class 7A game in Lombard.

The Rams, who improved their overall season record to 9-1 with the first-round victory, will meet Addison Trail (7-3) in this week’s second-round contest. The game will begin at 6 p.m. this Friday in Addison.

Glenbard East’s win over Harlem (6-4) marked the program’s first post-season victory since 2018.

Five years ago, the Rams defeated Prospect in a first-round game in the Class 7A playoffs. Glenbard East suffered first-round playoff losses at the Class 8A level in 2019, 2021 and 2022. There was no 2020 post-season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If the Rams defeat the Blazers, they will advance to the Class 7A quarterfinals, where they would face Community High School, located in Normal, or Bradley-Bourbonnais.

Community High of Normal (10-0) is the No. 1 seed in the Class 7A level. Glenbard East is the No. 9 seed.

Addison Trail is the No. 25 seed.

Glenbard East and Addison Trail have played each other 17 times. The Rams are 11-6 against the Blazers.

The two teams haven’t squared off in 41 years. In their last meeting, the Rams beat Addison Trail 40-0 in a regular-season contest on Oct. 23, 1982.

Friday’s first-round game between the Rams and Harlem began under a steady rain that cleared the area by the second half. Glenbard East scored its first touchdown of the

night on a 54-yard pass from senior quarterback Blake Salvino to junior Amonte Cook with 8:57 left in the second quarter. Senior Ryan Snell made the extra-point kick to give Glenbard East a 7-0 lead.

Snell kicked a 39-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to give the Rams a 10-0 halftime lead.

Snell made the field goal shortly after Glenbard East senior Augustus Winkler blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt by Harlem with about 40 seconds left in the first half.

Glenbard East senior Aaron Dotson intercepted a Harlem pass in the third quarter. Dotson returned the ball to the Huskies’ 8-yard line. The Rams were unable to score on their subsequent drive, which ended with an incomplete pass on a fourth-andgoal play from the 3-yard line.

Glenbard East’s defense quickly forced the Huskies to punt on the ensuing possession.

The Rams then began a drive at Harlem’s 32-yard line. Glenbard East cashed in on that drive, with senior Matt Larson delivering a 6-yard touchdown run. Snell added the extra-point kick to give the Rams a 17-0 lead with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter..

Glenbard East scored its final touchdown of the game on the second play of the fourth quarter, when Salvino completed a 9-yard scoring pass to Cook in the corner of the end zone. Snell made his third extra-point kick of the night to give the Rams their 24-0 lead.

The Montini Catholic football team rolled to a 48-6 victory over Eureka in Friday’s IHSA Class 3A first-round playoff game in Lombard.

The Broncos, who improved their overall season record to 7-3 with the win, will face Fairbury’s Prairie Central High School (6-4) in this Saturday’s second-round game. The contest will begin at 2 p.m. in Fairbury, which is southeast of Pontiac and about 95 miles away from Montini.

The winner of this Saturday’s battle in Fairbury will meet either Princeton or Monmouth-Roseville in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

The officials declared the game over with 1:06 remaining in the fourth quarter. As the game wound down, Glenbard East’s offense lined up to run the clock out. Salvino took a snap and knelt down. A Harlem player charged across the line and landed on Salvino.

The Rams didn’t appreciate that display, with the game essentially over, and a fight ensued. Glenbard East players who were on the sideline during the final play remained on the

sideline. One Harlem player, however, charged off of his team’s sideline, ran onto the field and slammed into a Glenbard East player from behind. A few police officers took the field, and players from both teams were eventually separated.

Larson rushed for 55 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. Salvino completed nine of 22 pass attempts for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

He also rushed for 43 yards on five carries.

Cook made three receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Gianbiagio Brusca had four receptions for 30 yards.

Rams’ season ends with loss in regional final Glenbard East rallies for post-season victory over Downers Grove South before losing to Oak Park and River Forest

The Glenbard East girls volleyball team completed its season with two matches at the IHSA Class 4A regional at Oak Park and River Forest High School.

The Rams opened the post-season with an exciting 22-25, 25-23, 25-18 win over Downers Grove South in a regional semifinal battle in Oak Park on Oct. 24. Glenbard East’s season ended two days later with a 25-11, 25-16 loss to Oak Park and River Forest in the regional final.

Glenbard East completed its season with an overall record of 21-16.

Oak Park and River Forest advanced to this week’s Hinsdale Central Sectional with its regional win over the Rams. The Huskies are the No. 1 seed in the Hinsdale Central Sectional. The Rams were the sectional’s No. 9 seed. Downers Grove South was the No. 8 seed.

After losing the first game of the regional semifinal against Downers Grove South, the Rams trailed the Mustangs 23-18 in the second game. After Downers Grove South missed a serve, Glenbard East senior Lauren Bradley served winning points on the next six points to lift the Rams to a 25-23 win in the second game.

“It was an awesome match,” said Glenbard East coach Bradley Cardott of the team’s regional semifinal against Downers Grove South.

“Our backs were against the wall in the second game. We pulled it together.”

Senior Sophia Sommesi provided 12 kills, 12 digs and two blocks in the Rams’ win over the Mustangs in the regional semifinal. Senior Hannah Meyer contributed 21 assists and seven digs. Bradley made 13 digs. Senior Stephany Sulari hit three kills, while seniors Emma Iwaniszyn and Gabby Walton supplied two kills each.

Sommesi smashed six kills for the Rams in the regional final against the Huskies. Meyer had seven assists and two digs, while Bradley made seven digs and handed out two assists. Freshman Belle McDermott added four digs.

The boys team from Northridge Prep of Niles won the sectional’s team title with its score of 35 points. Harvest Christian Academy landed in second place with 66 points, while Herscher claimed third with 85 points. Montini delivered a team score of 103 points in its fourth-place finish.

Montini Catholic’s girls and boys cross-country teams have both qualified for 2023 IHSA state meet. Both teams earned their state-meet berths at Saturday’s Class 1A sectional at Kankakee Community College. The top six girls teams and the top six boys teams at the sectional qualified for the state meet, which will take place this weekend at Detweiller Park in Peoria. Montini’s girls team earned a fifth-place finish at the sectional. The Broncos’ boys team delivered a fourth-place sectional effort. Montini’s girls team hasn’t qualified for the state meet since 2015. The Broncos’ boys program made its last team appearance at the state meet in 2014. The Willowbrook flag football team earned a third-place finish in the Illinois Girls Flag Football State Championship Tournament, which took place Saturday and Sunday at the Chicago Bears’ Halas Hall facility in Lake Forest.

One year ago, during their inaugural season, the Warriors won the state title at Halas Hall.

Willowbrook entered this year’s state tournament after posting a perfect 5-0 record during the West Suburban Gold-Plus Conference season.

The Warriors then won two games to capture the championship in the West Suburban Gold-Plus Conference Tournament. Willowbrook defeated Addison Trail 20-6 in the tournament’s title contest in Villa Park on Oct. 21.

The Montini Catholic girls volleyball team’s 2023 season ended with last week’s 25-23, 25-20 loss to Kaneland in an IHSA Class 3A regional final on the Broncos’ home court on Oct. 26. Kaneland advanced to the semifinal round of the Evergreen Park Sectional. Earlier this week, Kaneland faced St. Laurence in a sectional semifinal. Warriors roll to third straight regional title Willowbrook moves to 36-1 and advances to Hinsdale Central Sectional

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team won an IHSA Class 4A regional title on its home court last week. The Warriors beat Nazareth Academy 2513, 25-15 in the regional final in Villa Park on Oct. 26.

Willowbrook improved its overall season record to 36-1 with its win over the Roadrunners. The Warriors advanced to the Hinsdale Central Sectional, which took place earlier this week. Willowbrook faced Lyons Township in one sectional semifinal.

The winner of that contest battled either Hinsdale Central or Oak Park and River Forest in the sectional final on Nov. 1.

Oak Park and River Forest handed the Warriors their only loss of the regular season on Sept. 29. The Huskies defeated Willowbrook in three games in that match, which took place in Oak Park.

Oak Park and River Forest is the No. 1 seed in the Hinsdale Central Sectional. Willowbrook is the No. 2 seed. Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central are seeded third and fourth, respectively.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball program never won an IHSA regional title until two years ago. In addition to winning a regional title, the 2021 Warriors won a Class 4A sectional title before their season ended with a super-sectional loss.

“It feels good to win on our home court, in front of our fans,” said Willowbrook coach Irene Mason after last week’s victory over the Roadrunners. “This [winning a regional] was one of our goals from the beginning of the season. What this group has done for Willowbrook volleyball is something really special.”

Junior Hannah Kenny supplied seven kills, 10 assists, four aces and three digs for the Warriors in last week’s win over Proviso West. Senior Calli Kenny contributed four kills, 12 assists and four digs. Junior Lily Javier and senior Elle Bruschuk bashed five and four kills, re-

Calli Kenny amassed eight kills, 13 assists, 13 digs and three aces

in last week’s regional final against Nazareth Academy, which took place in front of a large audience, including a sizable crowd in the Willowbrook student section. Hannah Kenny contributed five kills, 11 assists and six digs. Marinier hit five kills and made four digs. Chivilo made eight digs, while Ostrowski tallied three digs and three aces. Ramey hit three kills, while Bruschuk and Javier smashed two kills each.

“At this point, everyone’s going

to be competitive,” said Mason while speaking about Willowbrook’s prospects at the sectional. “What’s important is who is mentally prepared to show up and play at their peak potential when it’s time to shine.”

In addition to celebrating their regional title after their victory over Nazareth, the Warriors honored Hannah Kenny, who recently delivered the 1,000th assist of her varsity career.

She’s been a member of the varsity squad since her freshman year.

Warriors kick off playoffs by beating Yorkville Willowbrook will play at Hononegah in this Saturday’s second-round game

The Willowbrook football team began the 2023 IHSA Class 7A playoffs with Friday’s 21-13 victory over Yorkville in Villa Park.

The Warriors will meet Rockton’s Hononegah High School (10-0) in this Saturday’s second-round game in Rockton. The contest will begin at 2 p.m. The winner will meet either Batavia or Lincoln-Way Central in the Class 7A quarterfinals.

Hononegah is the No. 2 seed in the 32-team Class 7A playoff field.

The Warriors are the No. 15 seed.

Willowbrook improved its overall season record to 8-2 with Friday’s win over Yorkville (6-4), which was seeded No. 18 in the Class 7A field.

“Our guys just kept battling,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth

after Friday’s victory. “Yorkville is a really good, physical program. I’m proud of our guys for continuing to come back and battle.”

Senior quarterback Arthur Palicki threw three touchdown passes for the Warriors during their first-round victory. Palicki threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes to senior Carter Ferguson. He connected with junior K.J. Rhodes on a 70-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Palicki completed 18 of 24 pass attempts for 350 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 91 yards on 21 carries. Rhodes made 11 receptions for 206 yards.

“It was a great team win,” said Palicki following the Warriors’ firstround triumph. “A lot of guys made

plays.”

Yorkville scored the game’s first touchdown on a 10-yard run early in the second quarter to take a 6-0 lead.

The Foxes missed the extra-point kick.

About one minute later, Ferguson caught a short pass from Palicki and raced into the end zone for a 70-yard touchdown reception. Junior Brandon Lopez made the extra-point kick to give the Warriors a 7-6 lead.

Palicki and Ferguson connected on a 29-yard touchdown pass with a

little more than two minutes left in the first half. Lopez converted the extra-point kick to give Willowbrook a 14-6 lead.

Palicki’s 70-yard scoring pass to Rhodes pushed the Warriors’ lead to 20-6 with about three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Lopez added the extra-point kick to raise the lead to 21-6.

Yorkville cut the Warriors’ lead to 21-13 with a short touchdown run and extra-point kick with about nine minutes left in the game.

The Foxes’ final drive of the evening ended on an incomplete pass on a fourth-down play near midfield.

Moments later, Palicki ran for a first down, which locked up the victory.

The Warriors then ran out the clock.

“We get another week together,” said Palicki while discussing the benefits of Willowbrook’s first-round victory. “Our main goal is to go as far as we can with our brothers, and spend as much time together as possible. Everybody loves everybody on this team. Everybody’s together.”

Willowbrook’s football team advanced to the second round of the IHSA Class 7A playoffs following Friday’s 21-13 first-round win over Yorkville in Villa Park. The Warriors, who improved their overall season record to 8-2 with the victory, will meet undefeated Hononegah High School (10-0) of Rockton in this Saturday’s second-round contest. The game will begin at 2 p.m. in Rockton. Willowbrook senior quarterback Arthur Palicki (No. 1) completed 18 of 24 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns in Friday’s victory. Palicki threw two touchdown passes to senior Carter Ferguson. He fired one touchdown pass to junior K.J. Rhodes. Palicki also gained 91 rushing yards during Willowbrook’s win over Yorkville (6-4).

Ojeda qualifies for Class 3A state meet Willowbrook junior runs to a 12th-place sectional finish

Junior Amelie Ojeda of the Willowbrook girls cross-country team will run in this week’s IHSA Class 3A girls state meet in Peoria.

Ojeda earned an individual berth in the state meet with her strong performance in Saturday’s IHSA Hinsdale Central Sectional at Katherine Legge Memorial Park. She completed Saturday’s 3-mile race in a 12th-place time of 18 minutes, 57.47 seconds.

The top 10 individuals at the sectional who weren’t members of state-qualifying teams advanced to the state meet. Of those 10 runners, Ojeda delivered the second-fastest sectional time.

The Warriors finished 13th in the team standings of the sectional, which included 18 teams. The top seven teams at the sectional advanced to the team competition of

the state meet, which takes place this Saturday at Peoria’s Detweiller Park.

Willowbrook sophomore Mariangela Popoca ran to a 49th-place finish at the sectional. She completed the race in 19 minutes, 54.02 seconds. Junior Malin Meeker (21.26.91) delivered a 95th-place finish for the Warriors, while freshman Grace Mamolella (21:45.88) placed 105th. Sophomore Allyson Stefani (22:02.4; 110th), junior Molly Brown (22:16.17; 113th) and junior Rosemary Kling (23:06.48; 128th) completed Willowbrook’s sectional lineup.

Downers Grove North won the sectional’s team title with its total of 54 points. Naperville North finished second with 62 points, while Naperville Central claimed third with 100 points. Willowbrook posted a team score of 343 points.

Three Warriors run in the Hinsdale Central Sectional’s boys race Three members of the Willowbrook boys team competed as individuals in Saturday’s 3-mile boys race at Katherine Legge Memorial Park. None of those Warriors advanced to the state meet.

Willowbrook sophomore Miteku Branch raced to an 87th-place finish at the sectional’s boys race, which he completed in 17 minutes, 12.17 seconds. Junior Jake Skibbie of the Warriors turned in a 97th-place time of 17:23.85. Junior Adriano Quintero of Willowbrook delivered a 114th-place time of 17:54.93.

A pair of Rams compete in the sectional’s boys event Two members of Glenbard East’s boys cross-country team raced as individuals in Saturday’s sectional race in Hinsdale. Neither Ram advanced to the state meet.

Senior Ryan Van Dam of Glenbard East completed the 3-mile sectional race in a 42nd-place time of 16 minutes, 25.06 seconds. Sophomore Mason Hephner of the Rams negotiated the course in a 46th-place time of 16:27.69.
