Since 1967, Bill Montgomery of Warrenville has been visiting DuPage Optical with Butzon as his eye doctor. Montgomery had an eye condition where both of his eyes were not focusing on the same point. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that Butzon diagnosed the condition, something that was not mentioned by Montgomery’s previous eye doctor.

To correct the condition, Butzon added prisms into Montgomery’s eyeglass lenses so he can see things three-dimensionally.

Addison Art Guild Fall Members’ Show on exhibit at the Addison Center for the Arts The Addison Center for the Arts presents the Addison Art Guild Fall Members’ Show on display Nov. 6 – Dec. 9. The artist reception is on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 7 – 8:30 p.m., when the best of show and other prizes will be awarded. There will be refreshments and a critique by the judge to follow, both free and open to the public.

The Addison Art Guild is 40 years old and welcomes new members,

AT senior recognized as School Winner by Wendy’s High School Heisman

Addison Trail senior Nicci Scorza has been recognized as a School Winner by the Wendy’s High School Heisman.

According to a press release from Wendy’s High School Heisman, School Winners “… set the bar. They work harder, show more passion and lead by example – in the classroom, on the field and within the community.” To be eligible for this award, applicants must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above, be proven leaders and role models within their school and community and participate in an eligible sport.

As a School Winner, Scorza received a certificate and a Wendy’s High School Heisman Patch. She was nominated by Addison Trail Physical Education and Health Department Chair Rob Schader for her leadership and involvement and the positive attitude/qualities she exemplifies. Scorza is a member of the Girls Basketball Team, the Girls Volleyball Team and the Softball Team. She also is Co-President of Addison Trail’s Lettermen Club, Publicist for Student Council and serves as a Blazer Ambassador to help freshmen transition to high school.

Villa Park man who murdered Elmhurst woman likely to be released State’s Attorney attempts to deny release via SVP Commitment Act

It was easy to sense the disappointment felt by DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin when he released a statement regarding Thomas Kokoraleis, a person convicted in 1982 for the murder of Elmhurst resident Lorraine “Lorry” Borowski.

Kokoraleis, a former resident of Villa Park, is likely to be released from prison soon.

Berlin’s office previously reported it was attempting to keep Kokoraleis, a member of a notorious gang known as the Ripper Crew believed to be responsible for several murders in the 1980s, in custody through the Sexual Violet Persons (SVP) Commitment Act. The Act would allow the state to keep Kokoraleis behind bars ‘if proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the person suffers from a mental disorder that makes the person dangerous’ and that it is “substantially probable” that the person will commit another act or acts of sexual violence.

Violent Persons (SVP) Commitment

Act requires proof beyond a reasonable doubt that a person suffers from a mental disorder, and that mental disorder makes him dangerous such that it is substantially probable the person will commit acts of sexual violence.

“After evaluations by highly experienced psychiatrists and psychologists found Kokoraleis does not meet the necessary criteria, we are unable to ethically bring a petition to find that he is sexually violent under Illinois law.”

Background on the case Thomas’ brother Andrew Kokoraleis was convicted of the murders of Lorraine “Lorry” Borowski and Rose Davis, was sentenced to death back in 1982 and was executed in 1999.

Edward Spreitzer, another member of the Ripper Crew gang, was convicted of the murders of Linda Sutton, Shui Mak, Rose Davis, Sandra Delaware and Raphael Tiradao about that time and is currently serving a natural life prison sentence with no possibility of parole. Spreitzer was originally given a death sentence that was commuted when then-Governor George Ryan commuted all death sentences in Illinois. Robin Gecht was convicted of the attempted murder, rape, aggravated kidnapping and deviate sexual assault of a woman and is not eligible for parole until 2042.

Thomas Kokoraleis was convicted of the 1982 murder of Lorraine “Lorry” Borowski based on an accountability theory, which means that he was held accountable for the acts committed by other individu-

als – Andrew Kokoraleis and Edward Spreitzer – that resulted in Ms. Borowski’s death. Kokoraleis admitted to participating in Ms. Borowski’s abduction. While he denied he was involved in her rape and murder, Kokoraleis admitted he was present while Andrew Kokoraleis and Spreitzer raped and murdered Ms. Borowski. He was sentenced to 70 years in prison. Based on Illinois laws in effect at the time he was sentenced in 1986, Kokoraleis served 50 percent of his sentence and was scheduled to enter mandatory supervised release in September of 2017.

According to Berlin’s office, the SVP Commitment Act authorizes the State to file a petition for civil commitment after a person has completed his criminal sentence if the individual meets specific criteria. To establish that criteria, the State must present testimony from qualified forensic psychiatrists or clinical psychologists. In evaluating the individual for a mental disorder, the law requires the experts to rely on evidence of acts of sexual violence that the individual himself committed. This evidence must come from the trial court record or other reliable sources.

As previously referenced, Thomas Kokoraleis did not meet these criteria.

Because the criteria for requiring an individual to register as a sex offender is different than the SVP Act requirements, Kokoraleis will be required to register as a sex offender when he is ultimately released from custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections. It has not been reported where he will live.

Bond set for woman that crashed car into pond with 6-year-old son inside

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that bond had been set for a Cicero woman accused of crashing her car into an Aurora pond, leaving her 6-year-old son in the submerged vehicle. Gladys Ruvira-Garcia, 31, of 5636 W. 22nd Place, Cicero, appeared in bond court, where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $500,000 with 10% to apply.

It is alleged that in the early morning hours of Oct. 15, Ruvira-Garcia was driving her vehicle with four other occupants, her adult sister, two teenagers and her six-year-old son, near Eola and Diehl Road. It is alleged that Ruvira-Garcia lost control of her vehicle and crashed her vehicle into a retention pond. It is further alleged that following the crash, Ruvira-Garcia, her sister and the two teenagers were able to escape the sinking vehicle but left Ruvira-Garcia’s six-year-old son behind as the vehicle sank into the water. Aurora police officers arrived at the scene and were able to extricate the boy from the vehicle. He was immediately taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition in a medically induced coma. Ruvira-Garcia was taken into custody at the scene of the crash. An investigation into the crash revealed that Ruvira-Garcia allegedly had a blood alcohol content above 0.14.

Ruvira-Garcia’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 30, in front of Judge Liam Brennan. She has been charged with three counts of Aggravated DUI, a Class 4 Felony, along with several traffic offenses including Driving Without a Valid Driver’s License.

On the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 28, the Independent learned that an incident of apparent road rage took place, resulting in a man being shot in the face by another driver.

Police were called to York & Diversey in Elmhurst on the report of an auto accident, but when they arrived, it was discovered that a 65-year-old man was suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. Police said the victim was shot by the occupant(s) of another vehicle, which was traveling southbound on York Rd.

According to Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, there was apparently a traffic dispute just prior to the shooting. The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital by paramedics and was later reported to be in stable condition. The wife of the victim was also in the vehicle when the incident occurred but she was not injured.

Elmhurst detectives were speaking with several people of interest related to the shooting and were reviewing surveillance video. A handgun was reportedly recovered.

Police requested any person or persons with any information about the incident to please contact the police department or to turn themselves in to police headquarters. A release from the City received on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 29, indicated that persons of interest were now in custody and the investigation remains under active investigation.

Willowbrook football team wins playoff opener

The Willowbrook football team opened the playoffs on a high note with a 44-21 victory over Deerfield in a Class 6A first-round contest in Villa Park.

The win moved Willowbrook to 9-1 overall. The Warriors, the No. 4 seed in the top half of the Class 6A bracket, host No. 5 seed DeKalb (82) either Friday or Saturday in Villa Park. Check IHSA.org for exact day and time. DeKalb advanced after a 38-28 win over Montini.

Willowbrook left little doubt early, jumping out to a 23-0 lead and holding a 44-0 lead at halftime.

Jack Jessen scored Willowbrook’s first touchdown via a 45-yard run.

Betty-Ann Garrett kicked the extra point.

Quarterback John Taylor scored on a 58-yard rushing touchdown and Garrett hit the point after to put Willowbrook up 14-0 with nine minutes left in the first quarter.

After Sam Tumilty recovered a fumble and Deerfield intercepted a Willowbrook pass, the Warriors recorded a safety to make it 16-0.

Taylor then threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to No. 18 to put Willowbrook up 23-0 (with Garrett’s extra point).

A Chris Diaz rushing touchdown from one yard out put Willowbrook up 30-0 with 11 minutes left in the first half.

Nick Sabatino then returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown to give the Warriors a 37-0 lead with six minutes left in the half. Jessen capped the scoring with a five-yard touchdown run.

Taylor Sarovich and Buddy Martens earned all-WSC Gold honors.

Sarovich led the team in 18-hole average at 84.8.

“This was our best season in a very long time, around 10-15 years,” said Willowbrook coach Gary Walker. “We had two sectional qualifiers in Taylor and Joey Guthrie for the first time since 2010.”

Walker noted the team defeated both Hinsdale South and Downers Grove South in the regional after losing to both in conference dual meets and at the conference tournament.

“We shot our season-low of 324 at regionals,” said Walker. “Even better, next year we return everyone except Buddy Martens and Tim Keefe.

We will be ready to pick up where we left off. These kids decided they wanted to compete. It’s as simple as that. Our team is full of athletes and when they decide they want to compete, they will all do great things.”

“We recently released a set of comprehensive prescribing guidelines for our physicians across all specialties, providing them with a best-practice model for how to prescribe narcotic medications for both acute and chronic pain,” says Dr. Weiner.

Edward-Elmhurst is asking its employed physicians to obtain training in how to prescribe opioid medication by July 1, 2018, and is providing in-person and online learning opportunities to meet this expectation.

In addition, Edward-Elmhurst has upgraded its electronic medical record system to integrate the Illi-

nois Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, and designed a dosage calculator to help physicians better understand the amount of opioids they are prescribing if they opt to prescribe multiple, or stronger, medications, such as Norco and OxyContin.

In support of treatment, Linden Oaks Behavioral Health, the psychiatric service provider for EdwardElmhurst Health, has opened a longterm medication assisted therapy (MAT) clinic, adding to its existing continuum of behavioral health services.

“Recovery from opioid addiction is a long-term endeavor, and research tells us that the use of targeted medications, such as Sub-

oxone, dramatically increases a patient’s chances of success,” says Dr. Weiner. “Expanding access to Suboxone and similar opioid maintenance medications is imperative, and we hope other healthcare institutions, as well as independent physicians will join us in offering these service to our patients in need.”

The MAT program is open to anyone who is motivated to stop using opioids. No physician referral is needed. Some people can begin their treatment journey at the clinic.

Others use it as a step-down from a more intensive treatment level.

“Lastly, if someone overdoses, we all must be ready to respond and save their life,” says Dr. Weiner. “Our emergency department

records show that overdoses do not discriminate by age – both young and old come to Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals having overdosed, from heroin, fentanyl or prescription medications.”

Dr. Weiner says having naloxone, commonly referred to as Narcan, on hand in the event of an emergency can save someone’s life – it is the antidote to an overdose, averting death for 30-90 minutes, enough time for an ambulance to arrive.

The opioid epidemic continues to destroy lives every day. From 2010 to 2016, there has been an almost 500 percent increase in opioid use disorder, accord- Dr. Aaron Weiner ing to a recent study of Blue Cross and Blue Shield members.

On Thursday, Oct. 26, President Donald Trump declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency.

“While this declaration will help draw attention to the problem and provide some additional resources, the more powerful statement will be the way we talk about addiction every day,” says Aaron Weiner, PhD, Director, Addiction Services, Linden Oaks Behavioral Health.

Dr. Weiner says the stigma surrounding opioid addiction kills a vast number of people. Many people taking pain pills are afraid to share that they’re addicted, worried about what their family or their physician will say. They keep the addiction a secret, which can prove deadly.

As part of its commitment to provide opportunities that help prepare students for post-high school success, the Addison Trail Guidance Department hosted its annual Career Week from Oct. 24 to 27.

Throughout the week, business professionals shared information about their background, education and daily work life to give students insight into a variety of career fields.

Teachers chose speakers who matched their subject area to assist students in connecting class instruction to real-world career possibilities.

Guest presenters spoke with students about a variety of jobs and answered their questions. This is the fourth year

Addison Trail partnered with Junior Achievement of Chicago to offer representation from companies and organizations throughout the Chicago area.

Twenty-five speakers presented during Career Week, and 68 classes and 1,663 students participated.

Career fields/professions that were showcased included culinary, engineering, manufacturing, scientist, radio disc jockey, bilingual professions and more.

Addison School District 4 students in grades 1, 4, and 7 have been receiving Chrome Books during the past two weeks as part of the district’s student technology rollout. Students were instructed about their responsibilities in the care of their devices.

The computers were checked out using each school library’s inventory control/ check out system before students had the opportunity to practice inserting the device in its carrying case. Students will be responsible for charging their devices every night at home.

At the elementary school buildings, 4th graders who had already received their Chrome Books assisted the younger students as staff showed the 1st graders how to care for their new machines.

Staff members whose students have the individual devices have

received training on ways in which they can use these machines to enhance learning. Additional professional development opportunities are planned for teachers to learn and share information about fully utilizing the computers.

“It was so exciting to see their faces light up as they worked on our first project,“ said Fullerton School 1st grade teacher Dena Seidenfuss, after of working with students on a lesson where they created a monster, using the touch screen and the device’s sound recording capability. “There is so much we’ll be able to do with these!”

All 1st, 4th and 7th graders will return their devices to school before summer vacation.

When they return to school in fall, they will be given the same device they used during the 2017-18 school year.

This is the first year of a 3-year rollout plan. At the end of three years all District 4 students will have individual devices to use for schoolwork.

Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming team making strides

The Addison Trail-Willowbrook co-op girls swimming team has made progress throughout the season as it now prepares for the Downers Grove South sectional meet next weekend.

AT-Willowbrook headed into the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet with a 2-2-1 conference record and 2.5 conference points.

“We have a younger team this year, for sure,” said AT-Willowbrook coach Tara Muprhy. ‘We have a lot of juniors and not a lot of seniors and a lot of freshmen.”

Murphy said this year’s team is one of the program’s largest ever with 43 swimmers.

“We’re bigger than we have been in the past,” she said. “It’s about the most we’ve ever had and for the first time it’s pretty even between girls coming from Willowbrook and Ad-

dison Trail.”

On an individual level, Willowbrook junior Elissa Haake is having a strong season. Murphy said Haake was shooting for the 35-year-old conference record in the 100 this past weekend.

“She’s already been under the cut,” said Murphy, who noted Haake has swam 53.16 in the event this season. “Elissa is quite a bit better than last year. Her 50 and 100 times are largely better this year.”

Addison Trail freshman Nancy Obrzut also has enjoyed a strong first high-school season. Her sister, Natalie, a junior, also is on the team but is recovering from an injury.

“Nancy has been strong overall,” said Murphy. “She’s gone from being in the 30 range (in the 50) to being in the 26 range after never having swam in the winter.”

Nell Pawlowski also has been a bright spot for AT-Willowbrook.

“Nell has been an all-around surprise for us since the beginning of the season,” said Murphy. “She’s doing a nice job.”

Addison Trail senior Michelle Ramirez and Willowbrook junior Anna Christiansen are part of a 200 freestyle relay team that Murphy said has an outside chance at a state berth.

Christiansen also does the backstroke for the team.

“Anna has a great backstroke for us,” said Murphy. “The 200 relay team is a long-shot for state, but that 200 free relay race is crazy. Anything can happen.”

Murphy said she was looking for girls in the current taper group to turn in better times at the conference meet this past weekend. “We always expect the taper group to drop their times and with the group that will be

Bison girls volleyball team concludes season

The Fenton boys cross-country team is headed back to Peoria.

The Bison punched their state finals ticket after finishing fourth at the recent Class 2A Chicago University High sectional at Washington Park in Chicago.

Fenton finished with 127 points, two points behind third-place Chicago Payton and six points ahead of Chicago Mather, which snared the fifth and final state berth.

In terms of the team point stand-

ings, Fenton senior Crisitan Sanchez took 15th with a time of 16:48. Junior Randy Almarales was 26th in 17:07.

Senior Jeremy Lodewyck was 27th in 17:08. Senior Michael Lieggi was 28th in 17:10. Senior Alex Whyte was 31st in 17:16, while sophomore Samuel Elizondo was 41st in 17:26.

Junior Chris Zavala was 67th with a time of 18:04.

Fenton is in the state finals meet for the sixth time since 2011. During that time, Fenton has qualified for state in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Earlier, Fenton took third at its own regional. Sanchez was ninth with a time of 17:02. Almarales was 10th with a time of 17:04. Lieggi was 16th in 17:17, while Lodewyck was 19th in 17:26. Whyte finished

21st in 17:28. Elizondo was 27th in 17:41 while Oscar Varela was 36th in 18:25.

Fenton girls cross country The Fenton girls cross-country team, which took fourth at the regional level a week earlier to advance to the sectional, did not advance out of the Class 2A Chicago University High sectional.

The Fenton boys soccer team opened some eyes this season.

The Bison finished the year 17-71 and went 3-2 in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division. Fenton was 8-10-3 a year ago.

Fenton opened the Class 2A playoffs with a 4-1 victory over Chicago Prosser in the semifinals of the Fenton regional at Redmond Park and then dropped a 4-3 decision in penalty kicks to Chicago Lake View in the regional final at Redmond.

“We surpassed expectations,” said Fenton coach Victor Ruiz. “A lot of people expected us to not do as well as we did. The is the first time we ever won 17 games. We

played solid teams and beat some solid teams. We beat St. Edward and coaches were calling me asking me what the recipe was to beat them.

We’re real excited for next year.

We had a young squad this year.

We have most of the guys returning and our feeder program looks good.

We’re excited about what is going on here.”

Ruiz was most impressed with his team’s mental approach this season. “We had the whole mentality of teams must come out and defend us,” he said. “The kids weren’t afraid to go out and play and you can have some fun while you are at it. They felt no pressure. We let them play and they adapted to our system and responded.”

Ruiz said the team’s defense improved during the season and will continue to be a point of emphasis going forward.

“As a team we played defense OK,” he said. “Our goal next year is to play better. We want to make our defensive play equal to or a

lot stronger than our offense. Offensively we are doing everything eight. Defense we have some areas we can clean up.”

Angel Barriga led the Bison in scoring with 35 goals and 24 assists.

Ivan Jaramillo had 20 goals.

Jaramillo, Johnny Chavez, Sebastian Palacios, goalie Carlos Popoca and Branny Salas were named to the all-MSC Blue Division team.

Barriga was named all-sectional and also was named the conference division MVP. He also received a certificate and a patch for being named a player of the week in the month of September from the schedule and statistics website Max Preps.

Ruiz said he loses only three starters to graduation from this year’s roster.

“We’ll have pretty much everybody back, like 17 kids are coming back,” he said. “Our lower levels work well and they had good seasons. All three levels are doing well.

These younger kids are excited to compete for starting spots.”

DuPage Regional Office of Education hosts substitute teacher informational meeting

On Thursday, Nov. 9, the DuPage Regional Office of Education (ROE) will host a workshop entitled, “Why Not Become a Substitute Teach-er” from 9 – 11 a.m. in the auditorium at 421 N. County Farm Road in Wheaton.

The workshop will lead attendees through the steps required to become a substi-tute teacher, allow time for questions, and assist those interested in completing an online application utilizing the Educator Licensure In-formation System. ROE staff members will present along with

school leaders from DuPage County.

Please note this is not a job fair and pre-senters will not discuss indi-vidual school district needs or accept resumes.

It was business as usual for the IC Catholic Prep football team.

The Knights opened defense of their Class 3A state championship with a 55-6 win over the Watseka-St. Anne co-op team at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

IC Catholic Prep (9-1), the No. 5 seed on the top half of the Class 3A bracket, travels to No. 4 seed Peotone (9-1) either Friday or Saturday

for a second-round contest (check IHSA.org for exact day and time).

The Knights offense chewed up 467 yards of total offense. Quarterback CJ West went 10-for-17 for 189 yards and threw three touchdown passes.

Senior running back Lazerick Eatman ran seven times for 120 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns. Freshman Kyle Franklin had nine carries for 96 yards and scored two touchdowns. IC Catholic Prep ran for 268 yards on the ground and averaged 12.2 yards per carry.

Eatman also caught two touchdown passes totaling 76 yards, giving him five touchdowns in the game. Kevin Cooke caught two

passes for 39 yards, while Sean Hipskind caught a 20-yard touchdown pass. Khalil Saunders caught two passes for 23 yards. Jacob Lytton caught two passes for 19 yards.

Jack Ryan had a catch for 17 yards and Khali Saunders had one catch for 12 yards.

Lytton also had 61 yards in kick and punt returns, while Hipskind had 79 yards in interception returns.

On defense, Kemon Reese made 10 tackles. Cooke had nine tackles, while Khalil Saunders had six and Michael Johnson added five. Jack Enright had four tackles.

Reese, Kevin Akins and Ricky Mysliwiec each had one quarterback sack. HIpskind and Cooke each had an interception.

Now, IC Catholic Prep hits the road to Peotone, about an hour straight south of Elmhurst. Peotone plays in the Interstate Eight Conference Small Division where it went 8-1 overall and took second in the division with a 4-1 record behind Wilmington, which also is in the Class 3A playoffs and still alive in the top half of the bracket. The Blue Devils have played six teams with winning records and have a 5-1 mark. Peotone has scored 40 or more points in six of its 10 games this season and has allowed two touchdowns or fewer in six games as well. If IC Catholic Prep wins this game, it would host either Wilmington or Farmington. The Knights hold the higher seed edge on Wilmington (each will have hosted once) and Farmington would have to hit the road after hosting twice and IC Catholic Prep only once. On the bottom half of the Class 3A bracket, the Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 seeds still are alive.

Tom Cullerton champions new law to protect Illinois workers

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) championed legislation to protect working families in Illinois.

Right-to-work laws hinder individuals from participating in collective negotiations for fair wages, safe workplaces and competitive benefits.

These types of policies are usually advocated for by business groups to protect company profits at the expense of workers.

“Illinois workers deserve to have a collective voice in policies that are going to impact their lives and communities,” Cullerton said.

“This new law will guarantee the citizens of Illinois are not brushed

aside by billionaires and large corporations that are more concerned about profits than people.”

Right-to-work policies not only negatively impact worker’s rights, but also endanger public safety protections for state buildings and roads.

Senate Bill 1905 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and now moves to the House for consideration.
