On Friday, Nov. 8, the Independent received a release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announcing that bond had been set at $100,000 for a Chicago resident who stands accused of burglary to several Elmhurst homes.

Deon Hampton, 28, of 6749 S. Damen, Chicago, is charged with residential burglary, a Class 1 Felony, and is currently on parole for residential burglary out of Cook County.

Because of his criminal history, Berlin said Hampton was eligible for Class X sentencing which carries a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Berlin’s release alleges that from Tuesday, Nov. 5 through Thursday, Nov. 7, Hampton burglarized multiple homes in Elmhurst. On at least two occasions, Hampton is believed to have stolen items while the homeowners were either inside the house or were outdoors working on their gardens and lawns.

Elmhurst police identified Hampton as a suspect during their investigation and found him seated in his vehicle in Bensenville on Thursday, Nov. 7. He was arrested and taken into custody without incident.

“The allegations indicate that during a three-day span, Deon Hampton entered multiple residences, at least two of which were occupied at the time, and stole valuables,” Berlin said. “These allegations are unacceptable and will be met with the full force and effect of the law.”

Hampton’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 25, 2019, when he will be arraigned. The matter remains under investigation.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

O’Hare International offers short waits in customs According to data provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, regarding which major international airports have the shortest wait times, Chicago’s O’Hare Airport topped the list as one of the most efficient airports by processing 485 incoming passengers every 15 minutes. Dallas/ Fort Worth comes in second place with 459 people in 15 minutes; Orlando International only managed

120 travelers in the same time, four times less than O’Hare, according to the data. Also processing a low number of passengers is another Florida airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, with only 197 incoming passengers.

Midway Airport had the second-lowest average wait time, at 5.5 minutes.

If you want to beat the crowds,

the best time to arrive at O’Hare is between 10-11 p.m., when the average wait time to clear customs is less than nine minutes.

The worst time to arrive at O’Hare is between 3- 4 p.m., when customs wait time may be 20 minutes or longer.

Violinist Diana Brodick visited orchestra classes at Indian Trail Junior High School on Wednesday, Oct. 16 to work with students on bowing and string playing techniques. Brodick is one of a number of professional musicians that is holding clinics for instrumental music classes at the junior high school thanks to a Young People’s Music Initiative Grant provided by the JCS Arts, Health and Education Fund of the DuPage Foundation.

This is the third year of a seven-year grant that is bringing musical opportunities to Addison School District 4 students. This year, Indian Trail received $2970 for music education projects.

Addison resident discovers talent for sewing in Library’s Creative Studio The Addison Public Library is one of the many libraries across the country that has its own maker’s space or studio, where patrons can explore their crafty side and pick up a new hobby.

For Addison resident Efua Assan, the library’s Creative Studio was the perfect space for her to explore sewing, where she quickly breezed past the basics to design and sew her first custom skirt.

Assan lives close to the library and regularly borrows books and movies.

She knew about the library’s Creative Studio, but didn’t know it had sewing machines until she happened to see someone sewing during one of her library visits more than a year ago.

When she asked about the machines, Assan learned that first she would need to make an appointment to learn how to use the sewing machines but would be welcome to use them any time after that initial instruction. She was interested in trying another machine-sewed project—her last attempt had been over three years ago—but didn’t have a

College news Resident partners with law enforcement As a pharmacy student at Cedarville University in Ohio, Leno Abraham of Addison recently partnered with local police for the Drug Leno Abraham Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 26, in Cedarville, Springfield, Fairborn and Xenia.

“Having pharmacy students was a great addition this year, so we could properly educate and inform the citizens of Clark County on any questions they have,” said Detective

Brian Melchi of the County Sheriff’s Office.

“As a pharmacy student, we rarely get the chance to work with the community outside the pharmacy and it is exciting to have the opportunity to work with local detectives on this important matter,” said Abraham.

“We as students have a unique position to serve the members of our community by educating them on proper medication disposal and the positive impact it has on the people around us and the environment.”

Under my father’s fedora

War stories on the homefront

His name was Bernard Villars Haberer but his friends called him Bill.

During WWI, he was stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville, Ky, when he decided to take lessons at Pauline Weaver’s School of Dance.

Weaver had been a professional dancer in the early 1900s and had even danced on the Broadway stage as a Ziegfeld girl.

Weaver had a rule against dating her dance students, but she broke that rule to date Bill Haberer and eventually married him and had a little girl also named Pauline.

The older Pauline died of tuberculosis at the age of 38, when young Pauline was only 11. Bill Haberer later moved to Ft. Worth, Tex., with his young daughter, who later became a student at Texas Christian University (TCU). At that time, World War II was in full swing.

Pauline and a girlfriend went swimming at the pool at the local USO, where they met three servicemen. Pauline had a car so the five of them piled in and went to a nearby lake to go swimming away from the USO. One of those men was Howard Longfellow.

Bill and the first Pauline were my maternal grandparents, and Howard and Pauline were my parents, who met at a USO and were married in 1942.

One spring day in 1967 when I was in 7th grade, I was standing in the hallway outside my parents’ bedroom and overheard them talking.

My brother Joe had received his draft notice. My heart went up in my throat. I had honestly been worried about him going to war since the night he graduated high school in 1966.

Joe was not especially physical, he wasn’t an athlete – instead, he was an outstanding musician. He and his trumpet took top honors at music contests all through high school, one year receiving seven #1 scores, which was an all-school record. Among the seven were three solo performances – on the trumpet, the French horn and the baritone.

Toward the end of basic training, Joe saw a notice on a bulletin board that the Army Band was seeking a French horn player. He stepped up and ended up spending his entire military service performing with the U.S. Army Band in Germany. Eventually, the director moved Joe to the trumpet section, knowing that was his primary instrument.

was killed in Vietnam, reportedly by “friendly fire.” I saw his name when the Traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial came to Elmhurst in 1988. I often think of him, knowing the name on that wall could have been Joe Longfellow.

All those memories came flooding back as about 100 people gathered at Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College for the Veterans Day concert event held Sunday, Nov. 10.

The last song to be performed was Stars & Stripes Forever. As her mother’s student, my mother had danced to that song while a young girl. In the early 1970s, I played the famous piccolo solo that is a part of that song! It was exciting for me to see three piccolo players of the Elmhurst College Wind Ensemble step forward to play that part on Sunday afternoon.

Watching television at this time brings shots of military cemeteries with the rows upon rows of small white crosses, each representing not only a fallen soldier, but also a tearful mother, a heartbroken father, sad and lonely sisters, crushed and disappointed brothers, along with grieving friends and relatives. And all we can do is ask “Why?” For ghost and paranormal enthusiasts If you watch shows like Ghost Hunters, you may have heard of Waverly Hills Sanitarium in Louisville.

It was the largest facility in the nation for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in the 1920s and 30s. My grandmother, who lived in Louisville and had TB, had two different stays at Waverly Hills, my mother told us.

The good news – my grandmother did NOT die at Waverly Hills, she died at home. That makes me happy because when people began dying rapidly, the Sanitarium put in a chute to transport bodies from the upper floors down to the ground and into a waiting truck. That way the other patients didn’t have to watch body after body being carried out of the building.

The Ghost Hunters have a hey-day in that chute. I’m very grateful she did not die there.

Carol Stream resident, former State Representative (District 55) and Wayne Township Supervisor Randy Ramey, a conservative Republican, announced his candidacy today for Illinois State Representative in District 45. Ramey is running for the seat currently held by Democrat Diane Pappas. A portion of the 45th District lies in Addison.

“After much consideration, prayer and conversation with family and friends, I have decided to enter the race to serve the people of the 45th District,” he said. “The focus of our campaign will be on the future of Illinois. However, in order to move forward, I must address the past. I believe in always being honest and direct with people. I want the people of the 45th District to hear this directly from me.

“As many people are aware, over eight years ago, I was pulled over for driving under the influence of alcohol. I am as much ashamed and humiliated today as I was eight years ago. I made a serious mistake for which there is no excuse, and I deeply apologize for it. I let my family and friends down, most notably, my three children, who are my life. They are driving now and will soon be 21.

I have meticulously educated them on the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence.”

“So we’re going to give this a whirl in the #ILSenate. SB 533 would end the arbitrary time change & IL would join other states,” Manar tweeted.

Manar said the idea for the bill came to him from a Carlinville High School student. And in his tweet, he linked to a recent Newsweek article that cited research that suggests the twice-yearly clock changes in most of the United States might have detrimental health impacts.

Daylight Saving Time was used sporadically during the first half of the 20th century. The idea was to move one hour of daylight from morning to evening in order to give people more daylight time after work or school.

During Word War II, President Franklin Roosevelt instituted Daylight Saving Time year-round, calling it “War Time.” That ended after the Japanese surrender in August 1945 when the nation returned to “Peace Time.”

But it came back in 1966 when Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which included provisions for using Daylight Saving Time half the year, in order to standardize time across the country and avoid confusion in the transportation and broadcasting industries.

Under the current schedule, clocks are moved forward one hour, to Daylight Saving Time, at 2 a.m.

on the second Sunday in March, then moved back one hour, to Standard Time, the first Sunday in November.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Daylight Saving Time reduces energy consumption because it reduces the need for household lighting and appliances.

The agency also says it helps prevent traffic accidents and reduces crime because more people are traveling to and from work or school and conducting daily activities during daylight hours.

But the 1966 law also gave states the authority to opt out. So far, Arizona is the only state among the 48 contiguous states to opt out of Daylight Saving Time, meaning clocks in most of that state are always set to Mountain Standard Time. A portion of northeast Arizona belonging to the Navajo Nation, whose territory also stretches into parts of Utah and New Mexico, still observes Daylight Saving Time.

Before 2006, the state of Indiana, which is divided between the Eastern and Central time zones, did not observe Daylight Saving Time but some individual counties did, creating confusion about what time it was in any given part of the state. That prompted the Indiana Legislature to pass a bill enacting it statewide, regardless of time zones.

Hawaii, where day and night cycles are nearly equal in length, also has opted out of Daylight Saving Time, as have the tropical territories of Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A spokesman for Amtrak said in an interview that the twice-yearly shift causes some inconvenience for the railroad, especially in November when clocks are turned back, forcing trains that are running around 2 a.m. that Sunday to stop for one hour so the clocks can catch up to the train

schedule.

Manar’s bill passed out of the State Government Committee on May 23 and has since been referred to another committee.

Lawmakers returned to the Statehouse on Tuesday, Nov. 12, and will continue through Thursday, Nov. 14.

House Republicans have also introduced a resolution, House Resolution 588, which would enable a chief co-sponsor of any bill that has at least five co-sponsors from each party to call for an up-or-down vote on that bill in a substantive committee.

Demmer said that bill is a response to Sen. Martin Sandoval, the former chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee who stepped aside from that post after federal agents executed search warrants at his district and Statehouse offices as well as his home.

Demmer said Sandoval was known for bottling up bills in that committee, even when they had broad bipartisan support.

Republicans also are proposing House Bill 3947, which would ban members of the General Assembly, their spouses, and immediate livein family members from working as lobbyists paid to influence local

units of government.

Finally, Republicans are offering House Bill 3955 to create publicly available documentation of any communication a lawmaker has with any state agency regarding the awarding of a contract.

Sandoval is reported to have intervened with the Illinois Department of Transportation on behalf of a company that provides automated red light cameras for cities and villages in the Chicago area, a company that also has made substantial contributions to Sandoval’s campaigns.

Speaking at a separate and unrelated event in Chicago Nov. 7, Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker did not speak directly to the Republicans’ proposed package. He did, however, renew his call for comprehensive ethics reform, including more disclosure by lobbyists, while saying he thinks it is unlikely that lawmakers will be able to pass very much legislation this week.

“We’ve seen that Representative Arroyo was a lobbyist for other levels of government,” Pritzker said. “I think that is challenging and problematic, but once again, I’m not sure we’ll be able to do the proper amount of investigation and hearings in the three legislative days that are left this year. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t aim at getting the best and most comprehensive ethics package through that we can.”

Army Trail School’s 4th and 5th graders enjoyed a visit from members of Addison’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7446 last week in honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11. project in mind. Then, she received an invitation to a party.

“My friend was having a theme party in New York where she wanted everyone to wear something with African print,” she said. “I knew I could either spend a lot of money and buy something, or be adventurous and make something for less money.”

Assan opted for the latter and promptly booked an appointment in the Creative Studio to learn how to use the library’s Janome® computerized sewing machine, meeting with Digital Services Coordinator Angelica EliasMagadan in August 2019.

“I don’t have a sewing machine, and [the library] is the only place that had enough space [to sew],” said Assan. “I live in an apartment, and I just felt like in the Creative Studio I could clear my head and not be distracted by all the other things I want to do at home.”

After learning the basics of the machine, Assan turned to the library’s books to teach herself the other essential skills she’d need to complete her project.

“I didn’t know how to take measurements for something like a skirt, or how to sew it closed when it was done, so I went to the catalog online and looked up books that teach you how to sew,” she said. “I went to get one book and ended up taking five or six, so I had a stack of books. It was really helpful—I was between YouTube University and looking at the books, but the books were how I figured out how to do my measurements and put in the zipper.”

Armed with the know-how to operate a sewing machine, a few yards of stunning green patterned fabric, and a plan to turn her vision into a reality,

Assan got to work in the library’s Creative Studio. “[Elias-Magadan] got this awesome beginner sewing kit that had all the tools you’d need to make any project: things like extra needles for the sewing machine, the roller cutter, pins, scissors, the stuff you use to mark your materials, that kind of thing,” Assan said. “It saved my life! I was using chalk and rulers and it just wasn’t what I needed. Besides buying spools to thread the machine and the fabric, I didn’t have to purchase anything extra.”

Before long, the skirt was completed. Assan shows off the zipper with pride—it’s expertly hidden within the skirt’s fabric, a technique that EliasMagadan says most beginners are too intimidated to try.

“I had the chance to see the finished product and was amazed at her work,” said Elias-Magadan. “I was so impressed by [Assan’s] eagerness to learn and teach herself all the sewing tricks she needed for her project.”

For a lifelong library lover like Assan, having the Creative Studio available to her for this project affirmed what she already knew about libraries -- that she would be able to find everything she needed.

“I tell everybody to go to the library.

When I was a kid, we used to go to the library all the time,” Assan said. “My mom would take us with no plan or agenda, but we always found something to do, whether it was reading a book, watching a movie, using the computers, or seeing if there was an activity or event or something going on. “[The Addison Public Library] is by far my favorite library I’ve been to in my whole entire life because of all the things that it provides for the people in

this community.”

After debuting her skirt at the party in New York and posting photos on social media, Assan received a huge amount of praise from friends and family, as well as a few skirt requests.

“If I get better [at sewing], I might take orders,” she said.

But for now, Assan is planning to make another appointment to learn how to use the Creative Studio’s vinyl cutter to make T-shirt designs. She got the idea while she sewed her skirt, chatting with another patron in the Creative Studio, who was making T-shirts of their own.

“We were joking that we could start a whole business at the library—and we totally could, just because of all the resources it provide[s],” said Assan.

“That’s why I think it’s so important to go to the library. They might have what you don’t have.”

Elias-Magadan offers occasional sewing classes, among other crafting programs, in the Creative Studio but she always welcomes a one-on-one appointment to teach patrons how to use the sewing machines like she did for Assan.

“I was really inspired by working with [Assan]. She took a lot of initiative,” Elias-Magadan said. “I hope we have more people like her who want to come in and use our machines. I know we have so much talent in our community and I hope we can provide the space and the tools for more people to learn how to make things.”

State’s memorials, monuments remember Illinois’ veterans

On Monday, monuments and memorials dedicated to those who served in the armed forces in Illinois served as the background for events to recognize Veterans Day, a federal holiday observed annually on Nov. 11 to honor military veterans.

The monuments, which range from big to small and old to new, were built with the purpose of serving as permanent markers. The biggest include stadiums, like Chicago’s Soldier Field or Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The smallest includes the recently dedicated memorial in unincorporated Illinois City in Rock Island County.

The 500 bricks are engraved with veterans’ names and unit information; a 5-foot marble slab is engraved with emblems of all the branch services.

dium honors the 189 Illini who died in World War I, each memorialized on one of the limestone columns that support the stadium’s upper stands. The stadium originally honored those who gave their lives in the “war to end all wars,” but its designers recognized the fragility of world peace and the likelihood of sacrifice by future generations.

In 2002, the university extended the stadium’s original dedication to honor all members of the Illinois family who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Soldier Field, along Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, opened in 1924 and is the home field of the Chicago Bears. Each Veterans Day, a ceremony is held in front of the statue of Doughboy, an informal term for a member of the infantry, especially members of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Soldier Field was named at the request of Gold Star Mothers to honor men lost in World War I. It was 2001, and Steve and Kathleen Rhea were leaving a church event, complete with a bounce house, when Steve mentioned the idea of buying an inflatable. He thought it would be a good way for them to make some cash on the side, and it was something that Kathleen could work on from home while she raised their four children. After further discussion with their longtime friend, turned business partner, Bill Meyer, the deal was sealed.

The fourth cornerstone, added in 2002 to this rapidly growing operation, was their local, trusted bank, Community Bank of Elmhurst (CBE). Bill and the Rhea’s were in the market for more inventory, which in turn meant they were in the market for additional capital. “Without CBE, there would be no AMJ Spectacular Events, and that’s a fact,” stated Steve. “We now have 580 inflatables, an array of engaging items, and expansive event-planning services, and none of that would be possible without CBE’s ongoing trust in us as a family enterprise.”

Together, Steve, Kathleen and Bill navigated the difficult course of building a successful business from the ground up, or rather, the garage up. Remember that first inflatable? It was initially stored in Bill’s garage, and today, AMJSE uses over 35,000 square feet of warehouse to store their continually growing inventory.

“We’ve built a reputation in our industry as a business that always takes the high road,” said Steve. “We don’t cut our clients or our company short in terms of quality, delivery, and price, and our inventory is significant.”

By 2008, AMJSE had become a full-time job-- for everyone. Steve targeted inventory and marketing, and still handles repairs on almost everything.

Kathleen took the reins in the front office as well as financials, and Bill focused on warehouse operations and logistics. Over time, they each found their niche within the company, and all along, CBE was their stable and silent partner for growth. “We operate within five hours of our Melrose Park warehouse,” shared Bill, “although we’ll travel further if the occasion calls.” Their dedication knows no bounds. Over the years, AMJSE has successfully tailored their business to supply the demands of a unique industry.

Cut to 2019, and AMJ Spectacular Events is leading Chicago’s industry of rentals for events and parties of all sizes, from backyard bashes to corporate events with upwards of 20,000 attendees, and anything and everything in between. AMJSE’s inventory includes, though is far from limited to: inflatables, zip lines, movie and casino nights, arcade games, dunk tanks, photo booths, concessions, trackless trains, every game you could imagine, and most recently, an entire warehouse filled with décor and novelty items.

As do the seasons of Chicago, the size of the staff will fluctuate throughout the year. While in the past the company was largely in demand during the warmer months, they’ve recently been seeing an increase of business during the winter months. “We’re looking to continue ramping up our winter business with increased marketing, sharing our success stories, and doing more and more weddings and themed events,” commented Kathleen.

AMJSE delivers fun throughout Chicago all year round: more than 700 block parties each summer, dozens of regional colleges and universities, themed country club parties, events at Navy Pier and other downtown landmarks, and countless parties for individual clients. “All of our events, large or small, and each of our clients are very important to us,” added Kathleen. AMJSE has numerous repeat clients, which means they’re doing it right.

Every family business has a story behind it, and AMJSE and CBE are excited about the next chapters. AMJSE is the epitome of “family owned and operated,” with siblings, children, parents, and close friends of the family working to ensure a smooth operation. As for that first inflatable? It was a hot air balloon, which is special and symbolic considering that, with AMJ Spectacular Events and Community Bank of Elmhurst piloting the business, the sky is the limit.

Addison Trail hosts ‘Go Pink or Go Home’ event

For the 12th year in a row, Addison Trail supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month by hosting “Go Pink or Go Home” events throughout the month of October to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Quality of Life Surveillance Program with Elmhurst Hospital and the Nancy W. Knowles Center for Cancer Care. Go Pink activities are coordinated by Addison Trail’s Blazettes Team, Cheerleading Team, Girls Volleyball Team, Orchesis Team,

L.A.D.I.E.S., Marching Band and Color Guard.

This year’s highlights included: On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Addison Trail Girls Volleyball Team hosted the District 88 annual Go Pink match against Willowbrook, and the team took home the win.

To recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Addison Trail students and staff wore pink every Friday throughout the month.

This year was the 8th annual Go Pink Walk, which took place on Monday, Oct. 21.

Participants donated $5 and had fun walking around the football stadium track with friends and family. Go Pink goodies also were

available to buy.

The Go Pink Football Game took place on Friday, Oct. 25 and featured a “Pink” routine from the Cheerleading, Poms and Orchesis teams. The Marching Band also wore pink plumes.

Funds raised from the Go Pink or Go Home events and activities will benefit the Breast Cancer Quality of Life Surveillance Program with Elmhurst Hospital and the Nancy W. Knowles Center for Cancer

Care. This year’s final proceeds are still being calculated but last year, Addison Trail raised $6,500.

Funds also will go toward the 4th Annual Go Pink or Go Home Breast Cancer Awareness Scholarship in Memory of Elizabeth Clifford, which is a $1,000 student scholarship. Clifford was a special education teacher at Addison Trail and passed away in May 2016 after battling breast cancer for several years.

flict veteran. “It is a moving ceremony and I think that so many people forget the original purpose of this stadium, and that is to honor our soldiers.”

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs says it is nearly impossible to know the number of veterans’ memorials and monuments in Illinois. Veterans Memorial Hall and Museum in Rockford was one of the first of its kind in Illinois to be dedicated to veterans of all wars. The 26th U.S. president, Theodore Roosevelt, was guest speaker at the dedication ceremonies on June 3, 1903.

The hall and museum still stand as a living memorial to veterans from all wars. Its mission remains as a way to preserve, display, and share the artifacts of Rockford and Winnebago County veterans who served in branches of the military.

“There is so much history in there and it is beautiful and so important to our state’s history,” said Air Force veteran Tom Bursell of Rockford.

“There are so many stories there.”

The Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks spurred several memorials dedicated to those lost on that day and the War on Terror that followed. Naperville erected one of the first memorials in the country to honor those who were killed. Located on the south bank of the DuPage River, the memorial includes rubble from the Pentagon, granite from the ground in Pennsylvania where Flight 93 crashed, and a beam from the World Trade Center in New York.

Another spot also of interest to veterans and Illinois citizens is Lincoln’s Tomb at 1500 Monument Ave., Springfield. Dedicated in 1874, it is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary Todd, and three of their four sons, Edward, William and Thomas.

More than 987,000 Illinois men and women who served in World War II and the 22,000 who gave their lives, are honored at the World War II Memorial at IDNR-One Natural Resources Way, Springfield. Its focal point is a white 22-ton concrete world globe flanked on two sides by black granite walls. Stainless steel buttons on the globe identify major battles, and quotations from military leaders and presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman are engraved on the walls.

The Illinois Vietnam Veterans Memorial, dedicated in May 1988 in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, honors Illinoisans killed or listed as missing in action during the Vietnam War. “It’s the second most visited cemetery in the country,” Schaler said.

The memorial incorporates five black granite walls upon which are inscribed the 2,970 names of Illinoisans who died or are still missing. The five black granite walls form interior courtyards, one for each of the five branches of service. Each branch of service is designated by its insignia, which is etched on inner 15-foot gray granite walls. Inscribed on walls are the names of those listed as missing in action or as prisoners of war, as well as the names of the highest decorated veterans in each branch of service.

Report: Illinois public education improving, but much more work lies ahead

A group that advocates for public education in Illinois released a report indicating the state has made some progress in improving educational outcomes over the past five years, but it still has a long way to go to achieve the goal of having 60 percent of all adults attaining some kind of college-level degree or certificate by 2025.

“To achieve this goal, we must focus on the entire education continuum, birth through career, and work to ensure that all students are on track across the critical academic milestones that mark their road to postsecondary completion,” according to the report by Advance Illinois.

The report, “The State We’re In 2019,” was released in mid-October.

The group has since been traveling the state to discuss the significance

of its findings on local communities.

The report examines how the state performed on a wide range of educational outcome measures—from kindergarten readiness to postsecondary completion—in 2018 and in most cases compares that with 2013. It also shows how the state ranks with other states on those measures.

Perhaps the most troubling statistic in the report concerns kindergarten readiness, data for which became available only in 2018. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, only 26 percent of 5-year-old children in Illinois showed the social, emotional and academic skills needed to start kindergarten.

The report also indicated wide racial, ethnic and economic disparities in kindergarten readiness, which is largely attributable to the availability of early childhood education programs in different communities.

The Warriors, whose season has ended in the quarterfinal round in each of the last three seasons, will travel to Lake Zurich for this weekend’s quarterfinal clash. The opening kickoff will take place at 1 p.m.

The Warriors will enter the quarterfinals with a 10-game winning streak and an overall season record of 10-1. Lake Zurich has a record of 8-3. The Bears advanced to the round of eight with Saturday’s 14-7 win over Hersey.

Willowbrook has won eight playoff games in the last four seasons.

None of those victories were as narrow or exciting as Saturday’s win over Yorkville, which finished the season with an 8-3 record. The Warriors led the Foxes 27-24 in the closing minutes of the game.

A late interception of a Yorkville pass helped Willowbrook hang onto its lead. The Warriors padded their margin of victory by scoring a touchdown on the game’s final play.

“Our guys never hung their heads,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth after Saturday afternoon’s win, which took place in clear and cool conditions. “They’re tough

and they always keep battling. They continued to battle and found a way.”

Senior Sam Tumilty led Willowbrook to the win with a tremendous performance on both offense and defense. The elusive quarterback threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores. Tumilty’s defensive contributions included the critical interception at his team’s 4-yard line with 3:36 to play.

Senior Deandre Holliday, another of Willowbrook’s two-way standouts, deflected the Yorkville pass that Tumilty hauled in for the interception.

“I just came down on the ball,” said Holliday of the massive play.

“Sam was right there. When I tipped it up he was there. It was just a great play by both of us.”

“Deandre made a nice break on the ball,” said Tumilty. “He made a deflection, and I saw it pop up and went to grab it.”

Yorkville took a 7-0 lead after scoring on a 33-yard touchdown pass on its first offensive drive of the game. The Warriors tied the score at 7-7 midway through the second quarter. Tumilty and Holliday connected on three pass plays during Willowbrook’s first scoring drive of the day.

kicked the extra point to even the score at 7-7 with about seven minutes left in the second quarter.

The Warriors took a 14-7 lead after Tumilty and senior Alessio Battaglia connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 2:59 left in the first half. Manning converted the extra-point kick.

Yorkville tied the Warriors at the start of the second half. The Foxes opened the half by returning the kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown.

The extra point leveled the score at 14-14 with 11:46 to play in the third quarter.

A long completion to Holliday put the Warriors in position for the go-ahead touchdown—a 1-yard burst by Tumilty on a fourth-andgoal play with 6:38 remaining in the third quarter. Manning added the extra-point kick to give the Warriors a 21-14 lead. Willowbrook maintained the lead for the rest of the game.

Both teams misfired on some key plays in the second half. Yorkville threw a pass on a fake punt play; the pass fell incomplete, giving the Warriors possession at midfield. A short time later, Willowbrook threw an incomplete pass on a fourth-and-one play. The Foxes took possession at their own 28-yard line.

In the closing seconds of the third quarter, Yorkville applied a heavy rush against the Warriors on a punt play. Willowbrook couldn’t get the punt airborne, and Yorkville took over at the Warriors’ 25-yard line.

Moments later, after the start of the fourth quarter, Yorkville kicked a 36yard field goal to cut Willowbrook’s lead to 21-17 with 11:49 to play.

The Warriors needed a little more than one minute to respond. Tumilty heaved a 79-yard touchdown pass to senior Everett Stubblefield on a third-and-five play with 10:38 left in the game. Stubblefield caught the long pass and raced down the sideline as his teammates and coaches cheered him on.

Willowbrook missed the extra-point kick after Stubblefield’s touchdown, leaving the Warriors’ lead at 27-17.

Former Addison Trail-Willowbrook girls swimming standout Elissa Haake is making an impact during her freshman season with the Purdue University women’s Elissa Haake team.

Haake is a 2019 Willowbrook graduate and Lombard resident who qualified for four straight IHSA state meets and was a seven-time West Suburban Conference Gold Division champion. She helped Purdue claim the team title at the Indiana Intercollegiates meet on Oct. 21. Purdue piled up 802 team points in the event at its home venue in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Boilermakers outscored nine other teams from Indiana schools.

Haake finished third in the 200yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 53.63 seconds. She also placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, which she completed in 52.84 seconds.

In an Oct. 25 home meet against Notre Dame, Haake finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, which she swam in 1:52.96.

Haake, who had three career top 10 finishes at the IHSA state meet while at Willowbrook, is studying actuarial science at Purdue.

Fox at Monmouth: Another former AT-Willowbrook girls swimmer carrying on at the collegiate level is 2019 Willowbrook graduate Kaitlyn Fox, who is a freshman on the Monmouth (Illinois) College women’s team.

In an Oct. 19 triangular meet against Knox College and North Central, Fox finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:22.76, and took second in the 500yard freestyle, which she finished in 6:27.36.

Fox also was eighth in the 50-yard freestyle, which she finished in 30.21 seconds.

Additionally, Fox was part of the Monmouth mixed 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed fourth. Fox’s efforts helped Monmouth’s women sweep the meet.

At the recent Halloween Invitational, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University on Oct. 26, Fox placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.88). She took eighth in the 200yard freestyle in 2:19.99, and was part of Monmouth’s 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Olaf (Northfield, Minnesota) College football team.

Halloran, who graduated from Willowbrook in 2015, has played in two games this season after playing in seven contests last year in an offense that posted its highest pointsper-game mark (23.4) since the 2012 season and most rushing yards in a season since 2011.

Halloran was the 2016 West Suburban Conference Gold Division lineman of the year in 2016 and was the Warriors’ offensive MVP, in addition to being named academic allstate.

He is an economic major at St. Olaf with a concentration in statistics.

Taylor at Carroll College: John Taylor, a 2018 Willowbrook graduate, is a member of the Carroll College (Waukesha, Wisconsin) football team.

Now a sophomore quarterback, Taylor has appeared in one game this season. He completed three of five passes for 62 yards and ran the ball seven times for 23 yards and one touchdown in an Oct. 26 victory at North Park University.

The Warriors faced a fourth-andone play from their own 29-line on their subsequent drive. Willowbrook lined up to punt the ball, but instead tried a pass on a fake punt play. The pass was incomplete, and the Foxes took over at the Warrior’s 29-yard line with 5:17 to play.

Yorkville was in range for a game-tying field goal when it tried a pass on a third-and-13 play from Willowbrook’s 21-yard line. Holliday made the deflection of the pass. The ball sailed straight up into the air and came down into Tumilty’s hands. The interception gave the Warriors the ball at their own 4-yard line with less than four minutes to play.

Tumilty raced 17 yards on the Warriors’ first play of their subsequent offensive series. Senior Ta’Vion Geanes then contributed a pair of big rushing plays, both of which gave Willowbrook a first down. The Warriors advanced the

ball to midfield and drained the clock.

Yorkville called its final timeout with the Warriors facing a thirdand-long situation with 1:18 to play. Willowbrook ran the ball after the timeout, and the clock wound down to less than 30 seconds to play before the Warriors punted the ball. Yorkville took over near its own 30-yard line with just 17.4 seconds left. After two incompletions, the Foxes made a short completion to set up a fourth-down play with just 4.5 seconds to play.

Yorkville completed a pass on the final play; the Foxes tried a few desperation laterals on the last play. One of those laterals hit the turf, and Willowbrook junior Haven Pryor picked up the loose ball and ran 25 yards into the end zone to end the game and push his team’s winning margin to nine points.

“We came out with a lot of intensity,” said Tumilty. “We bended but we never broke. We stuck

through it the whole time. There was some adversity but we fought well. That’s our mentality. We keep trusting and keep grinding it out.”

The Warriors lost in the quarterfinal round of the Class 7A playoffs in 2016 and 2018. The lost in the Class 6A quarterfinals in 2017.

Could this be the year that Willowbrook breaks through and advances to the semifinal round?

“I feel like this is a different team,” said Holliday, who’s in his third season with the varsity team.

“We want it a lot. We’ve got to get past the quarterfinals. I think this is the team to do it. We’ll always play for one another.”

The Warriors suffered their only loss of 2019 during their season opener against Providence Catholic. The visiting Celtics beat Willowbrook 14-7 in Villa Park on Aug. 30. Providence Catholic has advanced to the Class 6A quarterfinals. The Celtics (8-3) will face undefeated Glenwood this weekend.

and then some at the Class 3A state meet in Peoria where he ran 15:39.20 for three miles, and took 136th place.

He averaged 5:13 per mile.

The school record for three miles was 15:52 and had stood since 2013, Moran noted. According to IHSA records, in the history of the school, Addison Trail has had two state meet medalists in John Schafer (10th place in 1966) and Dave Dickow (11th place in 1968).

Moran ran 16:04.3 at the sectional at Lake Park’s East Campus. He initially did not make the state-qualifying cut due to the influx of court-ordered Chicago Public League runners into the sectional round of the postseason coming on the heels of the CPS teachers’ strike (Because of the strike, those runners had not participated in the regional round and the IHSA had initially ruled them ineligible for the remainder of the postseason once the strike concluded.).

The IHSA later ruled a handful of individual runners (including Moran) and one team that would have originally qualified, now were able to run in the state meet.

“At the sectional, the previous weather issues made it slippery and muddy, especially with the girls having run the course before us,” he explained.

In terms of improvement, Moran said he has made some adjustments to his mental game. “I think my mental habits have changed,” he said. “I used to have anxiety before races. I

understand running more now and am doing my best to get even better.”

Moran has an interesting way of describing how he came to like running. “I am physically better at running cross country than any other sport based on aerobics and based on endurance,” he said. “It’s easier to run than playing basketball or soccer.

I used to play soccer and I would run there and it didn’t work out. So, I decided to take the actual ball out of it and run. It has seemed to work out well for me.”

Moran, who also runs distance events for Addison Trail’s track and field team, would like to run at the next level and is thinking about pursuing a physical therapy major.

“I figure I have learned a bunch about the body through running, and I have been able to help my friends and myself with physical problems.

Why not make it my job and make it what I study in college?” he said.

“One of my friends started having shin splints. Because I had shin splints before, I was able to guide him on how he could run and sort of recover after each session, and make it better while still running on it during the track season.”

One could call Moran a student of the running game “I like to watch a lot of running videos,” he said. “I like to learn about running and try to understand it as best as possible,” he said. “I have a lot of motivation to learn and improve.”

Willowbrook encounters a Lake Zurich team that beat No. 4 seed Hersey at home in Saturday’s second-round game. Lake Zurich, which won its playoff opener on the road 14-7 at Andrew, plays out of the North Suburban Conference, where it finished second with a 6-1 record.

The Bears’ three losses have come to Palatine Fremd, Chicago Marist and NSC champion Gurnee Warren, all with winning records.

Marist (7-4) and Warren (11-0) are both in the Class 8A state quarterfinals this weekend, while Fremd lost in the second round to Warren in 8A. Lake Zurich has held its last four opponents to a total of 21 points.

No team has scored more than 24 points on the Bears this season, while Willowbrook hasn’t scored fewer than 32 points since the second week of the season. The Warriors have scored 383 points in 11 games. Yorkville’s 24 points against Willowbrook were the most the Warriors have given up this season.

Up next: The winner of this game heads to the Class 7A state semifinals next weekend against No. 1 seed Chicago Mount Carmel (11-0) or No. 8 seed Chicago Phillips (9-1).

If Willowbrook wins Saturday, it will host the state semifinal game.

The other upcoming quarterfinal games in the Class 7A playoffs include a matchup between No. 2 seed Nazareth Academy and Batavia, the No. 7 seed. Batavia beat Willowbrook in overtime in last year’s quarterfinals. The winner of the Nazareth-Batavia battle will face the winner of the game between No. 3 seed Rolling Meadows and Wheaton Warrenville South, the No. 22 seed.
