Addison man charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery following Halloween party

Vehicle chase leads to gun shots; victim struck in the leg

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Addison Director of Police Bill Hayden have announced that bond has been set for an Addison man accused of robbing Lenny Ramirez a car full of people after they left a Halloween party.

Lenny Ramirez, 23, appeared at a

bond hearing where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $500,000 with 10 percent to apply.

Ramirez has been charged with one count of armed robbery with a firearm (Class X felony) and two counts of aggravated battery (Class 3 felony).

On Oct. 31, at approximately 2:13 a.m., officers with the Addison Police Department responded to the area of Army Trail and Swift Roads for a report of shots fired. It is alleged

that the victim and several other individuals left a Halloween party and got inside the victim’s vehicle parked in a parking lot on N. Swift Road.

It is alleged that once inside the vehicle, another vehicle parked behind the victim’s car and blocked him from driving. Two males, later identified as Ramirez and an accomplice, then allegedly exited their vehicle, approached the victim’s car and opened the front passenger door.

It is further alleged that the two

men pulled an occupant out of the car and that Ramirez’s accomplice put a handgun to the back of the victim’s head and said, “give me everything; don’t move.”

Ramirez and his accomplice then allegedly took approximately $800 from the victim.

It is alleged that another occupant got out of the vehicle at which time he was struck in the face several times by the defendants and had his phone and wallet stolen as well. It is

further alleged that Ramirez entered the open passenger side door and began to punch everyone inside the vehicle.

It is alleged that the two subjects then ran back to their vehicle and fled the scene. It is alleged that the victim’s car followed the defendants when they fled and that at some point in time, Ramirez’s accomplice got out of the passenger side of the car

By State Sen. Steve Stadelman Democracy dies in darkness. Those words underscore the masthead of the Washington Post every day.

Sadly, the light journalism brings to many communities in Illinois and across the country is dimming. In the past 15 years or so, more than 2,000 newspapers around the country have closed, especially in rural areas.

That means no reporters covering local city council or school board meetings. If people don’t get the information they need to know what’s going on in their town, they can’t make educated decisions when they vote or hold their public officials accountable.

Journalists play an important watchdog role in our system. As a television news anchor and reporter in Rockford for nearly 25 years and a state senator for eight years, I’ve seen journalism from both sides. You could say a new Illinois law, which establishes the Local Journalism Task Force, is the result of my two careers intersecting.

The legislation I introduced and passed this year calls on the task force to assess the state of local journalism and issue public policy recommendations.

I think there needs to be a serious, open and frank discussion on the future of local news and how its future will affect government. As people rely less on traditional news organizations, we’ve seen a rise in media outlets that push a political

agenda.

Social media, meanwhile, is far too often the source of false and even dangerous information.

Professional news organizations are able to counteract that, helping readers and viewers know the difference.

Dwindling access to local news isn’t just a rural issue as many corporate owners of bigger-city newspapers cut staff and close bureaus to save money. While a large city still has many media outlets, we know that in our increasingly diverse society, some voices are not being heard.

There’s also an economic argument to be made. Newspapers have historically connected local businesses with readers. Without that connection, the local economy and businesses are hurt.

Members of the Local Journalism Task Force include news organizations that represent working journalists, academic institutions that teach journalism or have conducted studies and research into the issue along with state lawmakers and governor’s staff.

Potential solutions considered in other states include creating a fund to bring news and information to underserved communities, providing tax incentives to persuade media outlets to close local news gaps and more money for public broadcasting.

Or there may be no role for state government as the private sector develops new business models.

Nonprofit news websites buoyed by philanthropic foundations have sprung up around the country. So too have partnerships with nonprofit

A recent article in the Atlantic points out that equal to its watchdog role is the value of local news in establishing a community’s sense of self through stories on church picnics, restaurant openings and closings, school football games and fights to save a historic building or raise money for a cancer victim: “When that tissue disintegrates, something vital rots away. As local news crumbles, so does our tether to one another.”

People want to know what’s going on in the towns and neighborhoods where they live, work and raise families. Their access to news and local information shouldn’t depend on their ZIP code.

County plans virtual public hearing on long-range transportation plan The DuPage County Division of Transportation will host a virtual public hearing to receive feedback on the County’s Long Range Transportation Plan.

The Long Range Transportation Plan, known as DuPage Connects, will govern transportation policies

and practices at the County for the next 20 years. The goal of the plan is to create a vision and mission for the DuPage County Division of Transportation and to help ensure a sustainable and vibrant quality of life for residents and businesses.

The plan can be found on the Di-

Plan highlights and recommendations will be presented during a virtual public hearing, which will remain online from Nov. 12 until the end of day on Nov. 19.

Mazzochi invites first generation students and parents to info session State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Westmont) is hosting an informational event about college and the application process for prospective first-generation college bound students and their parents. Bond denied for Bensenville man accused of shooting police officer

Eight of 10 shots allegedly fired struck officer

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Bensenville Chief of Police Daniel Schulze announced Sunday, Nov. 7, that bond had Kiante Tyler been denied for a Bensenville man accused of shooting a Bensenville police officer eight times.

Kiante Tyler, 21, appeared in bond court Sunday morning in front of Judge James Orel, who granted the state’s petition to deny bond.

Tyler has been charged with one count of attempted first degree murder (Class X felony), one count of aggravated battery to a police officer with a firearm (Class X felony) and two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer (Class 2 felony).

On Saturday, Nov. 6, at approximately 12:55 a.m., the Bensenville Police Department was notified of a domestic disturbance in the 100

block of S. York Road.

When the first officer arrived, he began speaking with the occupants while standing at the open front door of the apartment.

As the officer spoke with Tyler, Tyler allegedly pulled a firearm and shot at officer Steven Kotlewski 10 times, striking him eight times. At nearly the same time, additional officers with the Bensenville Police Department who had arrived at the scene, heard gunshots and quickly responded, finding the injured officer crawling in a stairwell.

Officers rendered aid including applying tourniquets to the injured officer who was bleeding heavily. An officer then transported the injured officer to an ambulance.

Kotlewski underwent emergency surgery at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood as his injuries are extensive.

Another officer then went to Tyler’s apartment, and after several minutes, Tyler surrendered to the officer.

Following a sweep of the apartment conducted by the DuPage County Metropolitan Enforcement Response and Investigation Team, officers found a 9 mm pistol laying on the kitchen counter and numerous spent rounds of ammunition.

“Each and every day, our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect the safety and security we enjoy in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “For their service, courage and commitment, we owe them a great debt of gratitude that, in my opinion, can never be repaid.

“Any call to which they respond could turn violent at any time, as we saw in this case. The shooting of an officer touches all of us and on behalf of all DuPage County law enforcement, I wish a speedy and full recovery for the officer injured in this incident.

“I commend the Bensenville Police Department for their work on this case. I also want to commend the other responding officers for their quick thinking and decisive actions

that almost certainly saved the life of the injured officer. I also thank the DuPage County MERIT Public Integrity Unit and the DuPage County MERIT Forensic Investigation Unit for their immediate response and professionalism as well as the DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick and his Office.”

“I applaud the efforts of our responding officers, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team and to our community for their outpouring of support,” said Schulze. “The professionalism, composure and selflessness of our officers on the scene was exemplary and their quick actions kept the public safe and saved Officer Kotlewski’s life. Officer Kotlewski put himself in danger to protect others and now faces a long recovery as a result of this senseless act of violence.”

Tyler’s next court appearance is scheduled Dec. 6 for arraignment in front of Judge Mike Reidy.

While canvassing the scene, officers with the Addison Police Department located two silver spent casings in the intersection of Swift and Army Trail roads. Through the course of their investigation, Addison police officers identified Ramirez as a suspect in the case. On Nov. 2, Ramirez was taken into custody from his home without incident.

“Public safety remains the top priority for my office,” Berlin said. “We will not tolerate this type of violent behavior on our streets. Thanks to the truly outstanding investigation led by the Addison Police Department, we are able to bring very strong charges against Mr. Ramirez.”

“On behalf of the men and women of the Addison Police Department, I thank State’s Attorney Berlin and his office for their ongoing support of law enforcement throughout DuPage County,” Hayden said. “In this case, the outstanding work of the Addison Police Department, coupled with the legal guidance of the State’s Attorney’s Office, led to the apprehension and filing of serious charges against an individual accused of committing violent crimes in DuPage County.”

Ramirez’s next court appearance is scheduled Dec. 1 for arraignment in front of Judge O’Hallaren Walsh.

DuPage County Health Department to prioritize pediatric COVID-19 vaccination

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice’s (ACIP) recommendation for the use the of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children 5 through 11 years of age.

This follows the FDA’s authorization Oct. 29 of the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 in children 5 through 11 years of age.

The authorization was based on the FDA’s thorough and transparent evaluation of the data that included input from independent advisory committee experts who overwhelmingly voted in favor of making the vaccine available to children in this age group.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) expects the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine to be available through a robust provider network in many locations throughout DuPage County. DCHD has been working with healthcare providers, schools, and other organizations to ensure a broad network of access for children to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The DCHD also partnered with the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians to encourage all pediatricians and family medicine providers in DuPage to become COVID-19 vaccine providers and to ensure the availability of COVID-19 vaccine for their patients.

“We have been planning for the availability of the vaccine for younger children for months,” said DCHD Executive Director Karen Ayala.

“Protecting our children from severe outcomes associated with COVID-19 infection and reducing community transmission of COVID-19 are important steps in addressing the serious impacts this pandemic has had on our community.”

The Villa Park Junior Women’s Club held its Trick Or Trot 5K Run/Walk and Little Devil 1K Dash on Saturday, Oct. 30. The start/finish line for both events was on the Illinois Prairie Path, near the Rugaard Gazebo. All participants were encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.

Over 150 people took part in the event. Becky Havel (top right - No. 289) was the overall and female champion of the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race, which she completed in 20 minutes, 29 seconds. Gavin Conway (bottom right - No. 262), the race’s fastest finisher under the age of 18, placed second among all runners. He finished the race in 20 minutes, 50 seconds. Oversight Committee hearing with oil executives on climate change

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Recently, I participated in an Oversight Committee hearing with Michael Wirth, CEO of Chevron, on the issue of carbon emissions and climate change.

Since 1880, average global temperatures have increased by 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1.2 degrees Celsius. This is a real climate crisis because at a 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit change, or 15.8 degrees Celsius, we could possibly see summer sea ice disappearing in the Arctic.

During this hearing, Mr. Wirth falsely told me that his compensation as CEO was linked to reducing total carbon emissions. However, documents filed by Chevron with the Securities and Exchange Commission show that Mr. Wirth’s compensation—which totaled $29 million in 2020—has a component of reducing “carbon intensity,” the amount of carbon generated per unit of energy used, rather than total emissions. That means that Mr. Wirth could receive more compensation in any given year even if the company emitted dramatically more carbon pollution into the atmosphere.

To make genuine progress, we need transparency into the incentives that oil companies provide their executives to reduce pollution by their company. This is crucial for tackling the climate crisis.

My letter to President Biden on removing USPS leadership Last week, I sent a letter to President Biden requesting that he not reappoint the USPS Board of Governors Chairman, Ron Bloom, to ensure that the Board of Governors is able to appropriately review the job performance of Postmaster General DeJoy. Mr. Bloom’s term with the USPS Board of Governors expires in December, and President Biden has the power to appoint a new board member.

This is important because Mr. Bloom has unconditionally supported Postmaster General DeJoy, whose tenure has been riddled with financial conflicts of interest while his “Delivering for America” plan has significantly cut USPS service standards and increased prices.

My constituents have expressed serious concerns about their delayed mail and packages. Given Mr. Bloom’s commitment to

this unacceptable status quo and to Postmaster General DeJoy, I informed President Biden that a change of leadership in the USPS Board of Governors is necessary to ensure the longevity and success of the USPS. The Build Back Better Act Congress is still negotiating the final text for the Build Back Better Act (H.R. 5376). I am proud that the current draft contains provisions that I fought to be included to strengthen our workforce, our economy, and end the pandemic.

The current draft includes nearly $35 billion over the next 10 years for workforce development programs, which includes funding for existing workforce development programs, for industry and sector partnership grants, and for addressing climate change. The package also includes comprehensive high-skilled immigration reform, which I fought for to simplify the system, make it fairer, and reduce the green card backlog.

Lastly, the package includes $1.3 billion to support global and domestic vaccine production, including through the construction of new manufacturing facilities or the expansion of existing facilities. While the scale of the pandemic will demand even more action, this additional vaccine funding will be a step forward in preventing the emergence of new variants that could sabotage our progress.

First-year students applying to any of Illinois’ public universities will now only need to submit one form on Common App, and State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) applauded the step to increase accessibility to higher education opportunities.

“Applying to college can be tedious and expensive,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By using Common App, Illinois is simplifying the process and working to ensure individuals have access to higher education opportunities.”

This fall, all 12 public universities in Illinois will be available on the Common App platform, thanks to a $1 million state investment.

For families concerned about the cost of submitting college applications, waivers are

available for low-income students. In addition, some colleges and universities either have no application fees or will waive fees if needed.

“Many applicants and their families are hesitant to start the college journey because of the associated costs,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Luckily, there are several aid options available to help reduce the financial burdens associated with applying for college.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the Common App web site for informational resources, including a first-year application guide, videos and a complete list of institutions that use the application.

DuPage Care Center seeks holiday donations for residents The DuPage Care Center is inviting the community to help make the holidays brighter for residents of the Care Center through the Adopt-A-Resident program. The Adopt-A-Resident program allows members of the community to provide much-needed items for residents during the holiday season.

When a community member adopts a resident, he or she will receive information about the resident, including gender, age, and up to five items they would like. Gift requests average about $50 in value, and include items such as personal care products, gifts cards, and clothes.

Items can be brought – unwrapped – to the DuPage Care Center by Dec. 6. Gifts will be

wrapped and distributed to the residents during holiday parties throughout the month of December.

“COVID-19 restrictions mean we may not be able to celebrate the holidays as we’d like to.

But thanks to the support and generosity from our community, we hope to bring the magic of the holidays to Care Center residents,” said Health and Human Services Committee Chairwoman Julie Renehan.

Willowbrook’s girls volleyball team finished a memorable season with a loss to Mother McAuley in Friday’s IHSA Class 4A super-sectional match in Chicago. Mother McAuley, which won the contest on its home court, advanced to this week’s state semifinals in Normal.

The Warriors completed their season with a record of 37-2. Prior to this season, the Willowbrook program had never won a regional championship. This season’s team won a regional title, as well as a sectional title. After posting two post-season wins on its own court to win a regional plaque, Willowbrook advanced to the Bartlett Sectional. The Warriors beat Downers Grove North in three games in a Nov. 1 sectional semifinal. Two days later, Willowbrook defeated Wheaton Warrenville South in the sectional final. Hassler will swim at IHSA state meet

Willowbrook senior Ellie Hassler of Villa Park will compete in the upcoming IHSA girls state swimming and diving meet at FMC Natatorium in Westmont. Hassler qualified for the state meet with her performances at Saturday’s Downers Grove South Sectional.

Hassler, who is a member of the Willowbrook/Addison Trail co-op team, competed in the AWD (athletes with disabilities) division at the sectional. She earned state-meet berths in three individual events—the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Hassler finished the sectional’s 50-yard freestyle in 40.19 seconds. She posted a finishing time of 1 minute, 33.06 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle at the sectional. She completed Saturday’s 100-yard breaststroke race in 2 minutes, 17.66 seconds.

Pritzker gets COVID-19 vaccine booster ahead of international trip Governor: Child vaccine requirement would have to come from lawmakers

Gov. JB Pritzker became one of the 800,000-plus Illinoisans who have received a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot Nov. 2, ahead of his first overseas trip as governor.

Pritzker and his top staff planned to depart to London Nov. 2 to meet with business leaders on economic development opportunities in Illinois before heading to Glasgow, Scotland, on Nov. 5 for the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties. House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, and Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, planned to join the Illinois group for the London leg of the trip.

Pritzker received a booster dose of the vaccine manufactured by Pfizer and BioNTech after receiving the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine in March. He noted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently authorized “mixing and matching” vaccines.

He also said he was not worried about potential side effects, which usually last about a day and include fatigue or pain at the injection site, as he prepared to depart to London.

Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike also took questions about whether the state would require

vaccination for children to attend school.

Federal health officials gave final approval to using the the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children ages 5-11. That approval took place last week.

Ezike said any decision on mandates wouldn’t be considered until full approval is granted.

“So, I think it’s premature to think about requiring those for school,” she said. “We probably would want it to have the standard authorization, …such as what we have for Pfizer for individuals who are 18 and over.”

Ezike said while no vaccine requirement is currently being considered, “that probably could change much further down the line.”

Pritzker said any mandate would have to go through the state’s General Assembly.

“Here in Illinois, that requirement is something that would go through the legislature as others have,” he said. “We require lots of vaccinations, as you know, when kids go to school already, to make sure that kids don’t get polio, to make sure they don’t get measles and mumps and rubella and so on.

“And so this, if there was an approval of that—and I haven’t seen that on the horizon yet – but if there were an approval of that, then that

would just be another one of those vaccinations that kids get.”

Pritzker and Ezike urged all eligible Illinoisans to receive the booster shot.

Eligible populations for the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are those 65 years of age and older, and those 18 and older who live in long-term care settings or work or live in high-risk settings and had their last dose at least six months ago.

Those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are eligible if they are 18 years of age or older and have received the first dose at least two months ago.

Pritzker said with approval imminent, parents of children ages 5 to 11 who wish their children to be vaccinated should call their pediatricians to schedule a shot or reach out to schools to request a vaccine clinic be hosted there. Vaccines remain free, he said.

The COVID-19 test positivity rate sat at 2 percent as of Nov. 2, and hospitalizations were flattening, putting Illinois well ahead of where it was in the pandemic one year ago.

But greater vaccination will help halt a greater winter spread, the governor said.
