ISBE presents Those Who Excel awards to 2 at District 88

VILLA PARK-ADDISON — On Oct. 17, several members of the District 88 School Board and administration attended the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Those Who Excel banquet to recognize two District 88 award recipients.

The Those Who Excel awards honor those who have made significant contributions to Illinois public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools.

Among the honorees was Addison Trail alumnus Jeffrey Williams who earned a Meritorious Service award in the student support personnel category.

Williams graduated from Addison Trail in 2005 and is now a school psychologist at Fremd High School.

Board president Donna Craft Cain had this to say about him: “Watching Williams receive his award truly embodies why I became a Board member,” she said. “Seeing our students succeed and find their path in life is an indescribable feeling that fills me with pride. As Board President, there’s nothing more gratifying than knowing our staff and schools made a positive difference and helped Williams reach this accomplishment.”

AT visits University of Iowa

Addison Trail students took a college visit to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, on Oct. 13. Students enjoyed a tour of the campus, including a lecture hall and a dorm, and at lunch at Burge Hall. They then were able to speak with an admissions counselor and stop by the bookstore. This is the 12th consecutive year Addison Trail has provided an opportunity for students to visit the university.

ATHS student named to Army All-American band ADDISON — On Oct. 20, Addison Trail recognized senior Daniel Nowosad for being named to the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.

Nowosad underwent a competitive audition pro-

Band members also receive a selection tour stop at their school, and Nowosad was honored during a tour stop on Oct. 20. During the event, Addison Trail Principal Michael Bolden welcomed the crowd, and Nowosad was officially named to the band by members of the U.S. Army.

Village of Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra congratulated

Nowosad on his accomplishment and presented him with a proclamation from the village, and Nick Giannini, Chief of Staff with State Sen. Tom Cullerton’s office, presented Nowosad with a certificate from the senate.

Continued from page 1 Another recipient was the late Mark Johnson who was given a Meritorious Service award in the school board member/community volunteer category. A former District 88 Board member and onetime Board president, Johnson passed away not long ago and his wife Phyllis accepted the award on his behalf.

Cain spoke highly of Johnson, writing about her experience at the banquet in her latest column: “I was privileged to sit with Johnson’s wife Phyllis during the ceremony,” she wrote.

“When you think of District 88, Johnson is one of the first people who come to mind. He was invested in the district in so many ways – he graduated from Willowbrook in 1966; he received the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012; and he was a member of the Board of Education since 1999, serving as Board President from 2003 to 2011.

“As a fellow Board member with Johnson, I can honestly say he could always be counted on to make the tough decisions necessary to ensure

a high-quality educational experience for our students.

He often said his favorite aspects of being on the Board were shaking hands with all the potential for the future that walks across the stage on graduation day, seeing the successes and dedication of students who receive the District 88’s Best award and working with a faculty and staff who have demonstrated themselves to be among the best in the area. Johnson and Phyllis especially loved the arts and shared that passion.

They were big supporters of the fine arts program in District 88, and Johnson’s legacy in that area and throughout the district will be felt for years to come.

“But Johnson and I share more than a seat on the District 88 Board of Education. Along with being Willowbrook graduates, we also are parents of Willowbrook alumni. Having our children go through high school together gave me the opportunity to see Johnson’s dedication to District 88. He was always an involved and engaged parent – so much so

that he was asked by former Superintendent Robert Lopatka to join the Board. He not only attended countless events and activities at the school, but he also served on the Music Booster Club, of which Phyllis was President.

“Watching Johnson serve as Board President and how he created an environment where the administrators and Board members worked together with a focus on student achievement and respected one another’s decisions inspired me to run for Board President. I have served in that role since 2011 and it’s because I had a tremendous mentor in Johnson.

“Johnson passed away on Dec. 13, 2014, from cancer, but his impact on District 88 will live on through the achievements of our students and the bright futures they pursue. He was dedicated to this district, to this community and to these students. He was an outstanding Board member and a wonderful human being.

But more than that, he was truly a friend. He will forever be part of the District 88 family and will be greatly missed.”

• Maritza Rojas, 24, of Romeoville, was arrested near Lombard and Lake at around 5:22 p.m. and charged with DUI, improper parking on a roadway, no insurance, suspended registration and no seatbelt.

Police said she also had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department.

• Derrick M. Tomsic, 30, of Lombard, was arrested in the 600 block of N. Garfield St., Lombard, at around 7:59 p.m.

Police said Tomsic had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department.

Oct. 20 • Haven A. Bailey, 20, and Austin W. Rinebold, 19, both of Addison, were arrested in the 900 block of Harvard Avenue at around 12:26 a.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said they made loud noise that disturbed others.

ATHS welcomes Sen. Cullerton as Principal of the Day ADDISON — If you walked into the Principal’s office at Addison Trail on Oct. 21, you might have noticed a new leader at the school.

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (Dist. 23) took over Addison Trail as part of the Illinois Principals Association (IPA) Principal for a Day program. Cullerton met with student leaders and administrators, toured the building and participated in conversations with students and staff. He visited several classes, including Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level U.S. Government, Auto 3 and Hotel/Restaurant/Travel Industry.

“We always welcome local legislators to come and see the tremendous learning environment we have here at Addison Trail,” said Principal Michael Bolden. “The IPA Principal for

a Day program is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of our students and staff, as well as highlight our state-of-the-art facilities. It also provides a great experience for our students.”

Cullerton said he enjoys the program because it allows him to get to know the schools within his District. Previously, he had served as Principal for a Day at Willowbrook.

“I truly enjoy interacting with the students and having the opportunity to speak with a variety of classes,” Cullerton said. “It provides a venue to share information about the important role of state and federal government, and I also get to connect with the school districts. I’m able to hear and see firsthand what’s going well and in which areas we need to improve.”

A play-by-play commentator for ESPN, ABC, ESPN Radio and the SEC Network, Amin joined ESPN in 2011 at age 24, becoming one of the network’s youngest full-time game-callers. Recognized for his versatility while handling a multitude of sports across multiple mediums, Amin works on ESPN’s coverage of college football and basketball, as well as NCAA championship coverage of volleyball, women’s basketball and baseball. He has been the lead voice of the NCAA wrestling championships since 2012 and joined ESPN’s Women’s College World Series coverage in 2015.

Amin also provides play-byplay coverage on Major League Baseball, college football and college basketball broadcasts for ESPN Radio. Since 2012, he has called play-by-play of NFL games for Sports USA Media. Amin’s voice also has been featured in commercial advertisements for Sprint, British Airways and Comcast.

Fenton’s Vazquez-Perez wins cross-country regional title Bison girls and boys teams advance to sectionals

The Fenton boys cross-country team is headed to sectional competition after placing second at its own Class 2A Fenton regional.

The Bison will compete

in sectional action Saturday where state berths will be on the line. Fenton qualified for the state finals last year as a team.

Fenton finished with 62 points, 11 behind regionalchampion Deerfield and two ahead of third-place St. Viator.

Fenton junior Jose VazquezPerez won the individual regional title with a time of 16:05. Sophomore Cristian Sanchez was ninth in 16:49.

The Addison Trail boys soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Glenbard North in the championship game of the Class 3A Addison Trail regional.

Addison Trail lost 2-0 to Glenbard North earlier in the season in the championship game of a tournament.

In earlier action, the Blazers advanced to the championship game by scoring a 2-1 victory in double overtime against Wheaton-Warrenville South.

“It was a nice win,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini of the regional semifinal. “They tied the game with 20 seconds left in regulation, which was a little tough. But we battled back in the overtime.”

Sophomore Jonathan Hernandez scored the game-winning goal with four minutes left in the overtime off a pass from senior defender Fernando Alvarado.

“It was a tough game,” said Dini. “WheatonWarrenville South played a tough schedule all year, played everybody close and beat a couple of good teams. We knew it would

be a tough game. We were excited to win.”

Dini noted the Blazers have excelled this season due in part to a strong defensive showing.

“Our team defense has been really good,” he said.

“We have three juniors and one senior back there with a senior goalie. They cover well for each other. If there are any dangerous balls in the box they clean it up and move the ball to the midfield and to our forwards. We know what we have to do as a team on defense and we know our offense is good enough to get us enough goals to win games.”

Dini pointed out Addison Trail was 12-6-2 after the Wheaton-Warrenville South game and had given up more than 1 goal in only one of those 12 wins (the others the Blazers allowed 1 or zero goals).

“And that includes seven shutouts in those 12 wins,” he said. “Our defense has been very good and our goalie, Cosme Garcia, has been very good. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the area, no question. He has very good skills. He can throw the ball up to midfield. He’s a varsity baseball player and can track the ball well. He’s good with balls in the air and coming out on corner kicks. He also can kick it about 60 yards. He’s been our secret weapon this year.”

Hernandez finished ninth with a time of 16:23.3. Sanchez was 10th with a time of 16:24.6.

Felipe Ruiz was 17th with a time of 16:42.2. Aguilera took 21st with a time of 17:07.3.

Contreras was 24th with a time of 17:20.5, while Anye White took 25th with a time of 17:23.1.

At the frosh-soph level, Alex Whyte took fourth with a time of 17:36.2. Jeremy Lodewyck was eighth with a time of 18:03.2. Michael Lieggi was 11th with a time of 18:11.7.

Willowbrook football team misses playoffs on points criteria Warriors boys and girls cross-country teams advance to sectionals

The Willowbrook football team closed out the regular season with a 16-7 West Suburban Conference Gold Division loss to Leyden.

The setback left Willowbrook at 5-4 overall and 4-2 in WSC Gold play.

Willowbrook was playoff eligible with five wins, but was one of 10 teams in the state that did not earn a playoff bid due to falling below this year’s playoff-point threshold of 35 points.

Willowbrook finished the season with 29 playoff points (second-lowest in the state among 5-4 teams). Playoff points are the combined total of a team’s opponents’ victories. The Warriors played only one team this season with a winning record.

The loss also prevented Willowbrook from winning or sharing the WSC Gold title. The Warriors went into Week 9 tied for the conference lead with Hinsdale South. The Hornets won their Week 9 contest and claimed the conference

title outright with a 5-1 record. Willowbrook beat Hinsdale South earlier in the year.

Leyden moved to 4-5 with the win.

Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team dropped a 48-28 West Suburban Conference crossover contest to Glenbard West to close out its season.

The Blazers finished the year with a 4-5 record, ending in a four-way tie for third place in the WSC Gold Division with a 3-3 record.

Willowbrook boys cross country The Willowbrook boys cross-country team finished fifth at the Class 3A Lyons Township regional and earned a spot in Saturday’s sectional competition.

Senior Marco Martinez was Willowbrook’s first finisher in 15:38. Senior Chris Turek finished in a time of 16:43. Junior Jacob Christiansen ran the race in 16:55, as did freshman Matt Caron (16:55). Junior Casey King finished in 16:59, while senior Henry Dahl clocked in at 17:08. Sophomore Michael Isaacson ran the race in 17:35.

Volleyball team earns no worse than a share of conference title Blazers end regular season with Lake Park tournament championship

One year ago, the Addison Trail girls volleyball team finished in last place at the Lake Park tournament.

A year later, the Blazers won the Lake Park tournament title with a 4-1 mark.

Addison Trail started the tour-

nament with a 15-25, 25-18, 15-9 loss to Hersey. The Blazers then defeated Dundee-Crown 25-26, 25-16, 15-10.

On the second day of the tournament the Blazers scored a 25-14, 25-15 victory over Buffalo Grove and then defeated host Lake Park 25-15, 21-25, 15-13.

In the championship match, the Blazers avenged the earlier loss to Hersey with a 25-23, 26-24 victory.

For the tournament, Alyssa Ramir had six aces, two assists and three digs. Anastasia Labadessa had 10 aces, nine kills, two total blocks, 119

assists and 19 digs.

Carla Muell had four digs.

Ciara Williams had two kills, two assists and 43 digs. Danielle Tulke had five aces and 18 digs. Jessica Mell had one ace, 19 kills (hit .350), 10 total blocks and five digs. Keara Schmitt had 20 kills(hit .348), three total blocks and 15 digs.

Michelle Krefft had one kill.

Nicole Pudlo had seven kills, three total blocks and two digs.

Nina Muell had seven aces, 17 kills, one total block and 30 digs. Sarah Petrbok finished with 12 aces, a team-high 51 kills (hit .312), four total blocks and 34 digs.

Addison Trail had 41 service aces in the five matches.

Earlier, the Blazers recorded a 25-16, 25-10 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win over Morton. The win assured Addison Trail of no worse than a share of the WSC Gold title with a 5-1 record. It’s Addison Trail’s first conference title since 2006.

Ramir had one dig. Labadessa had four aces, 17 assists and one dig. Carla Muell had one dig.

Williams had eight digs. Tulke had four aces, while Mell had four aces, four kills, one assist and one dig. Schmitt had two aces, five kills and two digs.

Krefft had one kill. Pudlo had two kills, while Nina Muell had two aces, three kills and three digs. Petrbok had one ace, four kills (hit .800) and one dig.

Addison Trail had 17 service aces against only two errors and hit .293 in the match.

Addison Trail brought a 21-12 record into this week’s Class 4A Addison Trail regional. The Blazers squared off with Leyden earlier this week in the semifinals. If Addison Trail won that match it will play tonight at home for the regional title.

Addison Trail has improved its win total from nine in 2014 to 21 this season.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team added a pair of recent wins to its ledger.

The Warriors closed out West Suburban Conference Gold Division play with a 25-11, 25-18 win over Hinsdale South. Willowbrook finished

the conference season with a 3-3 record.

Danielle McNamara had seven kills, four solo blocks and one dig. Grace Chantos added one assist. Olivia Pennebaker had three kills, one ace and nine digs. Maya Bullock added one kill, one solo block and one dig. Maddie Weinhold had four assists and one dig.

Emily Ligocki finished with one ace, six assists and nine digs. Jamie Chiappetta had two kills and five digs. Kalyn Konrath had one kill and two solo

blocks. Kelly Conley had two kills, two aces, three assists and seven digs.

Willowbrook then recorded a 31-29, 25-13 non-conference win over West Chicago. McNamara had two kills and one dig.

Using the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds as their focus, students heard the story of a little girl who was encouraged by a teacher to try something new and then went on to help another young child gain confidence in his abilities. The students also learned “The Dot Song” which further encourages making a mark.

Fenton boys soccer team wins regional championship Bison girls swimmers improving

The Fenton boys soccer team scored a recent 1-0 victory over Burlington Central to win the Class 2A Hampshire regional championship.

The win sent Fenton to the Class 2A Hampshire sectional semifinals earlier this week against Rockford Boylan. If Fenton won its match on Tuesday against Boylan, it will play for the sectional championship Friday at 5 p.m. at Hampshire High School.

Fenton football The Fenton football team closed out the 2015 season with a 56-15 loss to IC Catholic Prep in a Metro Suburban Conference West Division game played in Elmhurst.

Fenton finished the season with a 2-7 overall record. The Bison finished 0-5 in MSC West play.

Fenton girls swimming The Fenton girls swimming team recently won the White Division at the Maine East relay meet.

At that meet, the Fenton JV took first in all events except one.

Fenton’s varsity also dropped

a recent triangular meet to DeKalb and South Elgin.

Fenton coach Caroline Dukich has seen strong performances from the likes of Agnes Gasior (200, 500), Emily Jarecki (butterfly, IM) and Hayley Gills (butterfly, IM, 100). “All have improved tremendously and put forth 100 percent effort every day in both practice and meets,” said Dukich.

Fenton is preparing for the upcoming conference and sectional meets. “Our hope for the remainder of the season is to improve on times and simply do our best,” said Dukich.
