County health department and sheriff’s office receive federal grant

Funds to support countywide behavioral health partnership and more than 14,500 mental health visits by a psychiatrist, psychologist or mental health specialist. At times, 20 percent of the jail population was on medication to treat psychiatric conditions, and the average stay for inmates with mental health issues (90 days) was more than triple the stay (28 days) for those in general population.

“This is another great example of the benefits of the continued partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and the Health Department,” said Sheriff John Zaruba. “The Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to serving all citizens of DuPage County and we need to continue to be creative in how we assist those suffering from mental health and substance use issues.

“The implementation of diversionary programs and services for these segments of the population are essential in fostering continued treatment for those in need, and I’m dedicated to the advancement of these types of partnerships and programs.”

The BHC will continue its work on two of DuPage County’s highest priorities, a 24/7 central receiving center for mental illness, substance use and post-incarceration support.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) and DuPage County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) have received a U.S. Department of Justice two-year grant of $471,000 to support the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP).

The JMHCP will serve 700 individuals through the work of the DuPage County Behavioral Health Collaborative (BHC), which is cochaired by DCHD and DCSO. The BHC will divert individuals with mental illness or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse from the criminal justice system, and provide re-entry supports for incarcerated individuals to reduce re-offending.

“This funding will allow the Behavioral Health Collaborative to move forward with countywide partnerships that will offer residents a sustainable community resource tools to bridge issues between mental health, substance use and criminal justice systems,” said Karen Ayala, Health Department Executive Director.

County Regional Office of Education awarded Bureau of Justice assistance grant DuPage County students and school personnel will have the opportunity to receive training focused on school violence prevention as a result of a federal grant and County funding.

The DuPage Regional Office of Education (ROE) has been awarded a three-year $400,000 Students Teachers Officers Preventing (STOP) grant by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) to initiate a countywide mental health training program. As a condition of the grant award, the County will provide matching funding of $133,000.

The U.S. Department of Labor has entered into an agreement with the fiduciaries of the Neuroscience Center LLC Defined Benefit Pension Plan to restore $419,758 to the Deerfield, Illinois-based retirement plan. The agreed-upon restoration is part of a consent judgment approved by the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois.

The action follows an investigation by the Department’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) that found violations of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) by fiduciary and sole trustee Steven R. Devore Best and the Neuroscience Center LLC. EBSA investigators found Best used monies from the plan for the Neuroscience Center LLC’s operating expenses, funded other companies he owns, and made personal loans to himself. Best conducted most of the unauthorized transactions in 2014 and 2015.

“Our investigation and the settlement that followed restores hardearned retirement benefits to employees and protects their future,” said ERSA Regional Director Jeffrey Monhart. “This case should remind all fiduciaries that they must work solely in the interest of plans and participants.”

On Oct. 5, Addison Trail hosted its annual New Student Breakfast. During the event, Addison Trail and District 88 administrators and staff welcomed more than 50 students who are new to the area or who have transferred to Addison Trail. Addison Trail Director of Guidance Kevin Redding gave students tips on how to be successful throughout their high school career, and Principal Michael Bolden provided words of encouragement. Participants also had an opportunity to win Blazer T-shirts through a raffle.

Presenting the candidates for DuPage County Board in District #1

The League of Women Voters posed five questions to the candidates for County Board in Districts #1 and #2. The Independent presents the replies to three of those questions. Some replies have been edited for length.

Q-1. According to Forbes Magazine (7/25/17 issue), DuPage County had more than 200 employees earning in excess of $100,000 annually.

One top staffer reportedly makes an annual salary of $201,750. Do you have a plan to reduce personnel costs?

Ashley Selmon (D) replied: “I support a 10-year salary freeze for County Board members – DuPage County Board members are the highest compensated in the state for part time work. A pay freeze would allow for these positions to continue being paid, which is important to ensuring that anyone can serve regardless of personal finances, while allowing the excessive salaries to normalize over time.

“I support eliminating health care benefits for part-time elected officials. Many board members [hold] jobs, or own their own companies.

Taxpayers should not pay for health care for officials, who have other alternative ways to obtain care through

their private employment.”

Zahra Suratweala (D) replied: “DuPage County Board members are paid almost twice the salary of other Counties and just voted to give themselves a raise -- we need to institute a 10-year salary freeze.

“We need to stop providing benefits to Board members without a demonstrated need. If they have careers or businesses from which they already derive benefits, this is a waste of taxpayer money.

“DuPage County outsources its lobbying to outside firms at a cost of $282,000 in 2018 alone, which should be reduced or discontinued.

Other counties spend zero on lobbying because they do it themselves.

“Several DuPage officials receive a car allowance of $450 per month, which needs to stop immediately.”

Sam Tornatore (R) replied: “County personnel costs are market driven. A substantial number of the jobs indicated are public safety jobs and professionals, such as engineers, IT specialists, etc. I have always subscribed to the belief that we should hire the best and brightest to protect and serve the County taxpayer. Additionally, many of the employees earning these salaries are union employees wherein the County is bound by collective bargaining agreements.

Kurzawa. Kurzawa dedicated her time and energy to serving the residents of DuPage County for more than 30 years.

Known as a passionate advocate and public health leader, Kurzawa served as President of the Board of Health and the DuPage County Health Department since 1999, nearly one-third of the agency’s existence. In this role, she established a progressive vision and strategic business plan to ensure the sustainability of public health programming in DuPage County.

Bipartisan legislation introduced

by U.S. Sens. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Rob Portman (R-OH), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Brian Schatz (DHI) to help families keep in touch with incarcerated family members, which is proven to help reduce recidivism rates and save taxpayer dollars, is gaining momentum, with 28 criminal justice leaders and civil rights organizations writing the senators to express their support.

The Senators’ Inmate Calling Technical Corrections Act would address long-standing concerns regarding predatory inmate calling rates at prison facilities across the U.S. and would affirm the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) authority to address a market failure to protect family, clergy and counsel who communicate with prisoners, inmates and detainees.

“Unjust and unreasonable charges negatively impact the safety and security of communities in the United States by exacerbating recidivism and damaging relationships between people in prison and their support systems,” wrote the officials and leaders.

“The Federal Communications Commission possesses the expertise to take a hard look at the costs of providing telephone service in order to ensure just and reasonable rates for all telephone calls and fees in the absence of competition.

EIGHT years ago, I met Sundus Rasheed, a young gal from Pakistan.

I was her host for a weekend, thanks By to the FAIVC, the Freeport Area KELLY International Visitors Council. I wrote SIMMONS Columnist about it back then and I just now came across the blog post that Sundus wrote when she returned home in October 2010. It’s worth reading now. She titled it “Small Towns and Big Hearts in the Midwest.”

“It has been less than a week since I came back from the US. It was three weeks long; coast to coast. The trip was an initiative of the US State Department fort a group of young leaders from South Asia including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan as part of the International Visitors Leadership Program for Civic and Political Engagement.

On the itinerary were major cities like Washington D.C, San Francisco, Chicago and New Orleans. The schedule also said that we would visit a small city outside of Chicago - Freeport - where we would learn more the election process in the US. Being a complete city slicker, I thought thank God it’s just two days in a sleepy, small town – one of which would be spent at home with a local family. But it turned out this small town offered me more than I had ever hoped for – friendship, joy and just some good oldfashioned fun.

I have to admit, I had the prettiest host (as the men in the group told me later) – the lovely Miss Kelly Epperson, a writer. We seemed to click instantly as I told her that one of favourite American holidays was Halloween. And she knew just where to take me – but not before some shoeshopping! Oh yea! I knew Kelly was the one for me as we browsed through shelves, picked up bargains and then headed for The Pumpkin Patch.

As we drove around in Kelly’s super-cute, smart car we talked about our work, loves and lives. And realized that there was not much of a difference between a big-city Pakistan and small-city America dweller. We were two girls on a mission – to have fun!

I LOVED The Pumpkin Patch! It had big pumpkins, small pumpkins, corn on the cob, candy, a petting zoo, llamas, a porcupine, kids, adults…and…. wait for it…..a corn shooter and pumpkin launcher! Kelly and I had a blast – literally, as we shot cob after cob, further and higher from what seemed to be a simple push and blast machine and launched small pumpkins from a slingshot. I should add that we missed the target every single time but what the hell, right? It was so much fun!

Exhausted by our corn and pumpkin blasting ways, we headed for dinner at The Irish Rose – a quaint little bar and restaurant in Rockford. The music, the food and the ambience was just perfect. Seriously. Just perfect. Just the right number of people too. And a really cute Indian doctor, who just happened to be dining alone.

Kelly blew me away with her hospitality, kindness and general awesomeness. She is beautiful and quite simply a joy to be around. We talked about boys, shoes, food, Halloween, Paris, Facebook and much more. It seems that the only difference between people is quite simply that of ‘good’ and ‘notso-good’ perhaps. The good ones seem to cherish the same values no matter what part of the world and what time of life they are in – love and happiness.

Here’s hoping for more love, happiness, common ground and most importantly joy between countries and people.”

Of course it was lovely for me to read Sundus’ appreciation of my hospitality, but her message that “no matter what part of the world we live in, we have so much in common” needs to be stated again and again and again.

Her favorite book is The Green Mile by Stephen King, she loves 80s American music, her interests are reading, writing, swimming (and shoe shopping). Am I talking about Sundus or me? You would not know, would you?

The more people we meet from other cultures, the more we see that we have so much to learn and nothing to fear. As Sundus said, “Here’s hoping for more love, happiness, common ground and most importantly joy between countries and people.”

Recycling birthday cards: Can’t beat the perfect one I forgot to give my husband his birthday card this year. I didn’t forget his birthday. That would be unforgivable. I just forgot the card.

Actually, I didn’t forget, I had it in the drawer at home, but we weren’t at home on his birthday.

So to my credit, I got him a card; I just didn’t give it to him on the right day.

A couple weeks later, I stumbled upon it in the drawer. It was a nice card, and I’d chosen it carefully. I’d read through at least half a dozen before finding the perfect one. Some cards can be so schmaltzy and sticky sweet. This one was genuine. I could have written the words myself. I wish I had, but that would have taken quite a bit more effort than finding one on the rack.

His birthday may have been weeks ago, but there is no time like the present. Plus there’s no need to waste a perfectly good card. I figured if I didn’t use it this year, I’d forget about it by next year and then I’d go out a buy a new one and we’d have two cards in the drawer and that would be a waste.

R.J. Lindsey brings Charles Dawes to life, WWI general and diplomat Special Veterans Day presentation commemorates the end of World War I

The major hostilities of World War I came to a halt on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, a moment in history brought to mind this year with deeper significance than ever. Veterans Day 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, a “war to end all wars” that was one of the largest and deadliest conflicts in history.

On Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum invites the community to honor Veterans Day and learn about the history of the First World War with a performance by accomplished living history impersonator R. J. Lindsey. Lindsey will bring to life the story of General Charles Dawes, a successful Chicago banker and businessman who

was compelled to serve his country during WWI. At the seasoned age of 52, Dawes joined the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in France under the leadership of General Pershing. He famously coordinated American, British, Belgian, Italian, and French military requirements during the war, earning high honors from all five nations. After the war, he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 for his work on the Dawes

Plan for WWI reparations. Dawes also served as the 30th U.S. Vice President of the United States, alongside Calvin Coolidge from 1925-29 and he was appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom in 1929.

The program takes place in the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, located just south of the Elmhurst History Museum at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst. Reservations are required and may be made online at elmhursthistory.org or by calling

The Tradition of Excellence award is the highest honor presented by Addison Trail to its graduates. Initiated in 1999, this annual alumni recognition program has honored recipients in professional fields such as medicine, engineering, science, education, art, music and law.

Westmont man charged with aggravated DUI in deadly crash DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Downers Grove Chief of Police Shanon Gillette announced last week that bond had been set for a Westmont man charged with crashing his car into a tree, killing his passenger, Annajeanne Dewey. Onecimo Vazquez-Valazquez, 30, of 318 W. Naperville Road, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Liam Brennan set bond at $500,000 with 10% to apply.

He has been charged with one count of Aggravated DUI Causing Death (Class 2 Felony), one count of Reckless Homicide (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Attempt to Leave the Scene of an Accident Involving Death (Class 2 Felony.)

It is alleged that on October 7, 2018, at approximately 1 a.m., Vazquez-Valazquez was traveling at

a high rate of speed northbound on Fairview Avenue near the intersection of 55th Street in Downers Grove.

It is alleged that Vazquez-Valazquez attempted to pass a car by entering the center turn lane, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree, splitting the vehicle in half and killing Dewey. It is further alleged that following the crash, Vazquez-Valazquez left the scene but returned a short time later. It is further alleged that when interviewed by officers, there was a strong odor of alcohol on Vazquez-Valazquez’s breath and that he had glassy and bloodshot eyes.

Vazquez-Valazquez’s BAC was allegedly .077 approximately one and a half hours after the crash.

“Once again, an innocent life has been tragically lost to an alleged drunk driver,” Berlin said. “Why

people continue to drink and drive is beyond me. Not only is drinking and driving dangerous, reckless and selfish, it too often turns fatal, as is alleged in this case. Every year, thousands of lives could be saved if people would simply call a cab or a friend for a ride home if they have been drinking instead of thinking they are fine to drive. I offer my sincerest condolences to Annajeanne’s family and friends as they are now sentenced to their lives without Annajeanne.”

Vazquez-Valazquez’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 5, 2018 for arraignment in front of Judge Brennan.

It was a pleasant evening on Thursday, Oct. 11, when members of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI) gathered at the preview showroom of Fitness Formula Club (FFC) at 135 N. Addison, right across the street from the building, which remains under construction.

Besides members of the local business community, Fitness Formula Club staff, managers and regional administrators were on the scene to answer questions and provide information to encourage pre-registration for membership.

“We want to have people in the Club right away,” said Jeff Riney, vice president of operations for FFC. “We want to be up and running and have people engaged, we want to be busy right from the start so we’re a busy and energetic club right from the start.”

The walls were adorned with photos of floor plans and sample materials of the interior of the facility.

Grand manors make up the skylines of many Illinois communities, but the history encapsulated at the David Davis Mansion in Bloomington holds it above the rest.

Built in 1872 on Bloomington’s then east side, the mansion was home to Judge David Davis and his wife, Sarah.

Davis served as judge of the state’s Eighth Judicial Circuit Court where he met and befriended an Illinois attorney by the name of Abraham Lincoln.

“Davis and Lincoln rode the entire circuit together,” said Jeff Saulsbery, site manager for the mansion. “Davis had to ride the circuit because he was a judge, but Lincoln only did because

he was driven to make something of himself.”

Saulsbery said the duo spent plenty of time together, which led to Davis acting as “one of the biggest political operatives” in Lincoln becoming president.

“What Lincoln did for the Circuit and what the Circuit did for him is a large part of Illinois history. His time in Central Illinois is what led to him becoming the 16th president of the U.S. and saving the Union,” said Guy Fraker, retired Bloomington attorney and Lincoln scholar.

At the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1860, five candidates vied for the Republican nomination, including Lincoln, who was the least known candidate among the group.

“The judge (Davis) went to Chicago and secured hotel rooms for all the Illinois delegates and convinced them and others to vote for Lincoln,” said Saulsbery.

Davis and his team used other tactics to boost Lincoln’s name at the convention and after the final vote was tallied, Lincoln was named Republican presidential nominee for the general election.

Without Davis’s advocacy, Fraker said Lincoln would not have been named president.

“A lot of factors got Lincoln nominated, but the biggest factor was he had a friend like Davis who was a very skilled politician in 1860. That’s something we in Bloomington can be very proud of,” said Fraker.

Fraker also touched on a side of Davis and Lincoln’s relationship that he said “isn’t particularly appealing.”

“After Lincoln was elected president, there were two openings on the Supreme Court. All the lawyers who knew Davis told Lincoln to take care of him and give him a seat.

Lincoln never responded to any of that and their mutual friends were quite critical of his decision,” said Fraker.

Davis so strongly supported Lincoln because of his “incredible integrity and intellectual honesty,” said Fraker.

The David Davis Mansion was built after Lincoln was assassinated but, prior to his presidency, Lincoln visited the Davises at their previous home located on the same grounds in Bloomington.

“The barn on the grounds is original to that first house owned by the Davises and the stable is exactly as it was 150 years ago. So, Lincoln’s horse was stabled here in the barn,” said Saulsbery.

Other outbuildings still standing on the 4-acre lot known as “Clover Lawn” include a wood house, two privies, a foaling shed, a carriage barn and an original flower garden.

Davis commissioned French architect Alfred Piquenard to complete the three-story, yellow brick, 36-room mansion for $75,000.

The elaborate Victorian-style is a

combination of Italianate and Second Empire architecture.

Piquenard also designed the capitol building in Springfield.

The mansion was well ahead of its time in terms of amenities. Indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, central heat and gas lighting made up an impressive and modern estate.

The last ancestors of the Davis family donated the house to the state in 1960 and it was opened as a state historic site.

“The research into the history of the building started before a single brush of paint was put on the walls for restoration,” said Saulsbery.

The state initiated $2.58 million to use for restoration of the site and years of research and labor resulted in a grand reopening in 1992. Now, nearly 40,000 people tour the mansion each year.

In 2007, it was deemed one of the 150 greatest places in Illinois by the American Institute of Architects. The site is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated National Historic Landmark.

“We are thought of as a museum, but we’re really an educational institution. You know the old adage: ‘You’re doomed to repeat mistakes if you don’t learn from history.’

That holds true today and it makes institutions like this more important than ever. We’ve got to know our past if we’re going to succeed in the future,” said Saulsbery.

The mansion grounds, at 1000 E. Monroe Drive in Bloomington, are open for public tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Visitors watch a brief video on the history of the mansion at the visitors center before joining a 50-minute tour of the home, which delves into the lives of David and Sarah Davis, Lincoln and the Irish-Catholic servants who worked in the mansion.

After a tour through two levels of the mansion, visitors can check out the gift shop and the 19th-century flower garden.

Addison Trail boys soccer team wins regional title Delapaz scores key goals in both postseason wins

The Addison Trail boys soccer team’s goal of postseason success hit its first check point.

The Blazers defeated York 3-1 to win the Class 3A Hoffman Estates regional title. It’s Addison Trail’s second regional crown in three years.

Addison Trail moved to 17-5 overall and has won 14 of its last 15 games.

The Blazers opened play in its own Class 3A Addison Trail section-

al against Benet Academy earlier this week. If Addison Trail won that game it will play for the sectional title Friday at 6 p.m. against either Lake Park or St. Charles East.

Addison Trail is the No. 6 sectional seed in its own sectional. Benet is the No. 7 seed. Lake Park is the No. 1 seed and St. Charles East is the No. 5 seed.

In the 3-1 win against York, Alexis Delapaz scored a goal off an assist from sophomore Anthony Hernandez.

Eduardo Gomez scored a goal off a failed clear and Melvin Mora tallied a goal off a free kick from about 40 yards out.

Addison Trail reached the regional final after a 1-0 win against host

Hoffman Estates. De La Paz had the game’s only goal at the 11-minute mark of the contest.

“We were able to hold on,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “We had to sit one of our better players who was injured in that game. Hoffman Estates played us tough. They played everybody in the back and had one guy up top. They wanted to try and keep it a low-scoring game.”

In the regional final, York led 1-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game.

“We had a mistake in the back,” said Dini. “After that we picked it up. The resiliency of this group showed after York scored that goal. We played our best soccer of the year. We were possessing the ball and winning the 50-

50 balls. This is why we’ve won 14 of our last 15 games. These guys are all-in. They play well and they expect to win.”

Dini also cited strong play from Martin Murillo on defense. “He’s a junior who plays left back for us,” the coach explained. “We can create offense with him. He’s really good at sending long balls up to the forwards and switching fields. He can fill in for Eduardo Huerta our sweeper when he pushes up. Martin has been excellent.

He’s a midfielder who we moved to defense. He has midfield skills as a defender and we’re able to use them in a lot of different ways.”

Dini again lauded the contributions of goalie Sam Sandoval. “He’s so

consistent,” the coach said. “He’s allowed an average of one goal a game.

He’s played every minute this season except 20 minutes and has played against a lot of top teams. It’s good to have someone back there with that type of consistency.”

Dini said his squad is looking forward to playing in the sectional at home.

“It’s going to be a good game against a good team especially at this time of year,” he said. “We’ve won regionals now two of the last three years. The program is changing. It’s really come full circle. We haven’t won a sectional in forever and haven’t hosted one in a long time. It’s something we are very excited about.”

Fenton girls volleyball team opens state playoffs this week Bison finished with 23 wins in regular season

The Fenton girls volleyball team concluded its regular season with a 23-11 overall mark.

The Bison went 3-3 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play to finish in fourth place.

Fenton recently defeated Thornton-Fractional North 25-19, 25-19 and lost to Wheaton Academy 2522, 21-25, 25-18.

The Bison opened state-playoff action this week against Leyden.

Heading into the postseason,

Mackenzie Miller was leading the team in service aces with 92. Vicky Krzyszkowski was tops in kills with 211. Miller was the team leader in assists with 568, while Krzyszkowski was tops in blocks with 50. Agata Kukielko was the team leader in digs with 135.

Coach Kelly Kleidorfer said the team took a big step forward in the serving department in recent matches.

“After a short stretch of struggling with our serving we rang up 21 aces in the two matches (TF North and Wheaton Academy),” she said. “We are really looking to continue our strong serving.”

Kleidorfer added the team’s frontrow attacking has been on the up-

swing in the past few matches as well. “If we can keep that up in the state tournament we will be a tough out,” she said.

Senior defensive specialist Isa Lozada and junior middle blocker Julianna Krebasch have been key contributors of late. “Isa has been really rock-solid in the back row,” said Kleidorfer. “Her passing has led to a lot of attacks for our front row. Julianna has been in attack mode. She has been attacking from different positions along the net and has made our offense that much better.”

Now Fenton turns its attention to the state playoffs this week. “There is no time left to get better now,” said Kleidorfer. “We have worked countless hours since July for this

The Addison Trail football team wrapped up the 2018 season with a 44-0 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win against Proviso East.

The win put Addison Trail at 1-8 overall and 1-5 in WSC Gold play.

The Blazers finished in a three-way tie with Morton and Proviso East for fifth place in the conference. Proviso East finished the season 2-7.

Addison Trail led 20-0 after the first quarter and 30-0 at halftime in a game that quickly morphed into a blowout.

Nick Daudelin completed 5 of 6 passes for 149 yards, four of them went for touchdowns.

Pablo Mosley ran 22 times for 100 yards and scored a touchdown.

Daudelin ran nine times for 21 yards and a score.

AJ Carlson caught three passes for 134 yards and all three went for touchdowns. Vince Daudelin caught two passes for 15 yards and one touchdown.

Addison Trail also was opportunistic on defense where it had six takeaways. Nick Daudelin and Nico Nasti each had an interception, while Carlson, Kevin Catano, Sammy Retondo and J.T. Daniels each recovered a fumble.

Aaron Sanchez kicked five extra points and had a field goal.

Addison Trail boys cross country The Addison Trail boys cross-country team finished ninth at the recent Class 3A Lake Park regional. The Blazers had 246 points.

However, senior Randy Almarales and sophomore Dylan Moran both qualified for sectional action this Saturday. Almarales finished 36th with a

time of 16:17, while Moran was 39th at 16:31.

Freshman Alex Martinez finished 54th in a time of 17:32.4. Junior Jonathan Ramos was 58th in 17:42.7, while senior Sal Lopez was 59th in 17:48.9. Sophomore Cole Greaves took 63rd in 17:59.3. Junior Julian Lara was 66th in 18:40.1.

The Blazers had 241 team points.

Sophomore Viviana Sanfilippo qualified for the sectional race this Saturday. She finished in 15th place with a time of 18:46.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team finished the regular season with a 15-20 overall mark and took fourth in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 3-3 record.

In recent action, the Warriors lost to Hinsdale South, went 3-2 in the Lincoln-Way Central tournament and took ninth (wins against Oak Lawn, Reavis and Illiana Christian

and loses to Lincoln-Way West and Stagg) and defeated Proviso East.

Katie Linnig had 13 aces, nine assists and one dig in the Oak Lawn match. Katelyn McCann had eight kills, eight digs and two aces against Reavis. Emma Barrington had 13 kills and five digs against Illiana Christian. Elizabeth Bruschuk had two kills, two aces, 23 digs and four assists against Illiana Christian en route to being named to the L-W Central all-tournament team.

Through late last week McCann was leading the team in kills. Kaitlyn Karcz was tops on blocks, while Linnig was tops in aces. Payton Ceh was

the team leader in digs and Linnig was leading in setting assists.

“The team is working well together,” said Willowbrook coach Irene Mason. “If someone is struggling or having an off night someone else is stepping up and filling that role. Our overall energy has been awesome.”

Mason labeled the team’s offense well-balanced. “Different hitters are stepping up and scoring for us each night and having standout performances,” she said.

Mason also has been impressed with the team’s intensity on defense.

“The girls all play with a lot of heart every match,” she said. “Our block-

Linnig and Grace Reckamp are the team’s two setters. “Katie and Grace are doing an excellent job running the offense and putting our hitters in good positions to score,” said Mason. “They both are emerging as strong leaders and are getting better and more confident every day.”

Mason also cited Karcz for her “excellent blocking and hitting,” and McCann for “playing confidently and aggressively.”

“We are playing some of our best volleyball right now,” said Mason.

“All the hard work the girls have put in this season and in the off-season is showing.”
