Bill Murphy and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced that two Texas men had been arrested and charged with the October 14th robbery of two Chick-Fil-A restaurants located in Wheaton and Lombard. Roosevelt Hart, 26, and Henry Wilson, 25, both of Houston, appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge Brian Telander set bond at $250,000. Both men have been charged with two counts of Burglary, a Class 2 Felony.

On Oct. 14, at approximately 3:49 a.m., officers with the Wheaton Police Department were dispatched to the Chick-Fil-A restaurant located at 301 East Loop Road. Upon their arrival, officers observed a shattered window on the west side of the building. Officers also allegedly found Hart and Wilson inside the restaurant attempting to break into the safe using a blow torch.

It is alleged that when officers gave commands to the defendants, they barricaded themselves inside the store for approximately 10 minutes before surrendering to officers without further incident.

It is further alleged that through their investigation into the matter, Hart and Wilson were identified as suspects in a similar robbery at a Chick-Fil-A located at 717 E. Butterfield Road, Lombard approximately 30 minutes earlier.

“It is alleged that within half an hour, Mr. Hart and Mr. Roosevelt burglarized two Chick-Fil-A locations in DuPage County,” Berlin said.

“The quick response displayed by all those who assisted in this matter exemplifies DuPage County law enforcement’s commitment to public safety.”

In terms of summer contact days, 51% of coaches surveyed used their summer contact days permitted by the IHSA in July and August, while 49% of coaches did not.

Of the coaches who used the summer contact days, only 7% reported having known positive COVID-19 cases involving members of their program. Of the 7% who indicated having COVID-19 cases in their program, most reported 1-2 total known cases.

The IBCA also asked if any outbreaks occurred in programs due to positive COVID-19 cases. With that question, 403 responded no and only one responded yes.

The IBCA noted the data reflects the percentage of programs using summer contact days that have reported cases within their program, not the percentage of total individual participants that have tested positive for the virus.

The sad news of the number of cases and deaths involving COVID-19—unfortunately, an everyday occurrence—has, of course, led to things that have become part of a “new normal”: wearing masks, social distancing and spending much more time in your house, condo or apartment than you normally would.

I hope you agree that we all could use a bit of a break from all of the above. Hopefully, what follows will trigger something that’s sorely needed these days: a laugh or two (or a smile, or both).

Coronavirus theme song lists started making the rounds in Google searches back around April and May. Many such lists have since materialized.

Some artists have written songs over the past few months specifically pertaining to the virus—varying from serious to parodies—and performed them on social media.

For today, however, I’m going with several old standbys that fit the COVID-19 backdrop (and hopefully meet Dr. Fauci’s approval). Songs to help you carry on during COVID-19 or to put on your quarantine party playlist: Don’t Stand So Close to Me (The Police)—Let’s put it this way: social distancing isn’t the original inspiration behind Sting’s chart-topping ditty (and we’ll leave it at that). But it’s certainly enjoying a renaissance during COVID-19.

Dancing With Myself (Billy Idol)—With couples dancing, I assume, out of step nowadays (Think: Don’t Dance So Close to Me rather than Don’t Stand So Close to Me) dancing with one’s self appears to be the only safe alternative if you’re a dancing enthusiast.

All By Myself (Celine Dion)— It’s all coming back to me now.

Will your heart go on, Celine Dion fans, if I told you this is not a Celine original, but a cover of a 1975 smash hit by Eric Carmen?

The focus of that event was to meet with legislators to discuss the importance of Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses, as well as government funding to support low-income students enrolling in those classes.

During the three-day event (which took place virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic, 24 teachers, 12 alumni and 11 students from throughout the U.S. joined together to advocate during 22 legislative meetings. Vitiritti-Lynch met with U.S. Senators Tina Smith (Minn.) and Dick Durbin (Ill.).

District 88 was recently represented during a Youth National Call on School Equity.

The virtual event took place on Tuesday, Oct. 13 and was hosted by Benjie Howard and Wade Antonio Colwell through Corwin. During the call, students from throughout the U.S. met with education leaders to share their thoughts and experiences with regard to equity.

The panelists discussed current challenges in the education system, how they advocate for equity and encourage others to be stewards of equity, how they collaborate with teachers to create and sustain an equitable and inclusive environment and how we can move forward with our efforts in this area.

Howard and Antonio Colwell also lead the Youth Equity Stewardship (YES!) series, a program focused

District 88 has been committed to creating and sustaining an equitable and inclusive environment for all students through Deep Equity and Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Youth Equity Stewardship (YES!) series for more than half a decade and has put in place many programs to assist with these initiatives. The district is maintaining its work with Deep Equity, YES!, Trauma-Informed Practices and Restorative Practices and has also implemented the District 88 C.A.R.E. Team (Committed to Academics, Resiliency and Equity) for students and staff to expand and deepen efforts in those areas.

Addison Trail, D-88 celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

District 88, including Addison Trail High School, is recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year. Beginning in 1968, National Hispanic Heritage Month was originally observed as “Hispanic Heritage Week” under President Lyndon Johnson, but was later extended to a full month during President Ronald Reagan’s term in 1988. “(This month) traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries,” according to information at hispanicheritagemonth.gov. “[The goal is to] share history, heritage and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans of past and present.”

This is the fourth consecutive year Addison Trail has celebrated the occasion. In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the school recently hosted a special segment during its new “Blazer News” broadcast, which is coordinated by students with guidance from advisers Rob Schader, Department Head for physical education, health and driver education, and social studies teacher Christina Trapani.

During the show, Addison Trail senior Gerardo Alvidrez, junior Mateo Gomez and senior Cristal Moreno Aguilar discussed the history of the month, what makes the Hispanic culture unique, Addison Trail’s annual Kermes (Latino food festival) – which features traditional Latino dishes, live entertainment, raffles and family-friendly activities – and more with interviews, including AT social worker Jorge de Leon. EPA selects University of Illinois to receive Pollution Prevention funding On Thursday, Sept. 24, during Pollution Prevention (P2) Week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing the selection of the University of Illinois – Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (U of I) to receive a $323,928 P2 Grant to promote pollution prevention in manufacturing and processing facilities. P2 means reducing or eliminating pollutants from entering any waste stream or otherwise being released into the environment prior to recycling, treatment, or disposal.

U of I will use the funds to provide on-site technical assistance to 30 Illinois manufacturing and processing facilities across multiple business sectors, comprising EPA’s five National Emphasis Areas. Implementation of P2 recommendations from assistance will be measured and reported, resulting in reduced energy and water use, hazardous materials generation and reduced business costs at the facilities.

Oct. 14 Trevan C. Alexander, 24, of Rockford, was charged with resisting/ obstructing a police officer and obstructing identification in the 1000 block of Elizabeth at around 7:14 p.m. Police said officers were assisting another agency, officers requested Alexander’s name. Alexander allegedly fled on foot and refused to obey officer’s commands to stop.

I would like to reply to Dave Terrill’s Letter to the Editor regarding Flat Tax vs. Fair Tax (Viewpoint, 10/15/2020 edition of the Elmhurst Independent).

An Elmhurst resident is making the argument that the Fair Tax would make more sense than the Flat Tax. I disagree.

While the resident makes some fair points about the poor financial condition of Illinois, he fails to point out that the state and city of Chicago of have been run by the Democratic Party for well over 50 years. Therefore, most of the blame is on them. I’m not saying

the Republicans are saints, certainly not, but it’s a real stretch to blame both parties.

Cuts to solve the debit will be painful, but necessary, and will be remembered!

A Flat Tax makes more sense since the percentage is the same for all, therefore, those who earn more, pay more, simple math.

The “Fair Tax” would be very dangerous for all of us. Reasons being are that it allows politicians, those same people that have already mismanaged our state to have free reign to raise tax-

As of 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, there were 20,715 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 596 deaths. Since Saturday, there were 270 new cases and NO deaths related to COVID-19 reported.

Willowbrook boys and girls run at conference meet The Willowbrook girls and boys cross-country teams competed in Saturday’s West Suburban Gold Conference Meet at Proviso West High School in Hillside. Proviso East High School hosted the meet on Proviso West’s course, which is measured officially at 3.06 miles.

The boys and girls meets each featured two flights to promote social distancing. Each of the day’s four races featured up to five runners from each team.

Willowbrook’s girls team finished fourth in the team standings of the girls meet with 116 team points.

Downers Grove South won the conference meet with its total of 22 points. Hinsdale South (58 points) placed second, while Morton (99 points) claimed third. The Warriors edged out Addison Trail, which posted a fifth-place total of 120 points.

Senior Melissa Martinez led Willowbrook’s girls team with her 15thplace time of 21 minutes, 44.78 seconds. Martinez earned all-conference honors by placing among the top 16 in the meet’s individual standings. Junior Lily Weder (22:22.94) delivered a 19th-place finish for the Warriors.

Freshman Sophia Gogol (23:08.38) placed 26th for the Warriors, while junior Madeline Barrington (23:37.23) landed in 33rd place. Sophomore Amelia Barrington (24:00.56) secured a 43rd-place showing for Willowbrook.

Freshman Lillian Caron led the Warriors in the first race of the day.

She completed the race in 24:48.61, which was good for 51st place overall. Freshman Olivia Williams (24:53.17), who also ran in the first race, placed 52nd overall, while sophomore Abby Kusmierz (25:11.67) finished 55th. Sophomores Cailey Dotson (25:35.79; 57th) and Alessandra Ramirez (28:18.06; 60th) rounded out the Willowbrook lineup at the conference meet.

The Warriors’ boys squad placed sixth in the team standings of the conference meet. Senior Tyler King, who earned all-conference distinction by placing among the top 16 individual finishers, completed the race in a 13th-place time of 17 minutes, 29.71 seconds.

“Based on the data collected from our survey, among many other reasons, we believe that the mitigations and health guidelines in place have proven to be successful in helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while student-athletes participate in basketball activities,” the IBCA wrote in its survey conclusion. “It is because of this we are advocating for basketball to move to Level 3 in the IDPH Youth Sports Guidelines in time for the start of the 2020-2021 season.”

The IBCA survey was released mid-last week during a point where the IDPH reported single-day virus positivity cases in the 4,000s on two occasions (4,554 on Oct. 16 and 4,015 on Oct. 15). As of late last week, 34 counties in the state have been elevated to warning level status

by IDPH. The state’s rolling seven-day positivity percentage was at 5.2% for the period Oct. 10-16. That contrasts the period from Sept. 23-29 where the statewide positivity rate was down to 3.6%. The Oct. 4-10 period was at 4.2%, a full percentage point lower than the Oct. 10-16 number.
