Fire Prevention District approves funding vests, helmets

Hats off to reading!

Fire Chief: ‘We can no longer be passive’

By Dee Longfellow

FOR THE ADDISON INDEPENDENT

Protective equipment such as bullet-proof vest and ballistic helmets are becoming more of a commonplace among paramedic firefighters today. Besides that, there is a growing concern that shooting victims need to be treated quickly. The Addison Fire Protection District recently approved funding to invest in protective bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets that will allow them to enter an active scene and begin assisting injured victims immediately. The District has approved an expenditure of $16,283 dollars for the gear, which will be kept on the vehicles and be ready for use when needed. Fire officials will be trained on the use of the equipment as well. In the past, police would secure the scene before the paramedics and firefighters could go inside to treat the injured. With this new equipment, police and paramedic firefighters will be able to enter an active scene to treat and remove victims more quickly. The protective equipment will allow them to become part of a response task force during an active shooter incident and help protect them during questionable situations. “We can no longer be passive,” said Addison Fire Chief Joe Leone. “We must respond with the police and render emergency medical care in a timely manner. We have instituted training, purchased the protective equipment and are now ready to enter into this unfortunate reality.”

These students in Mrs. Savaglio’s second grade class at Lincoln School wear sombreros brought to class by Don Figarelli, who shared a reading unit with the children. The sombrero tied in with one of the books Figarelli shared with the classroom.
