Late Sunday afternoon, the Independent learned that former Illinois State Representative Sandra Pihos, a Republican from Glen Ellyn, had been arrested by the Lombard Police Department for alleged retail theft on Tuesday, Sept. 26. According to circuit court files, Pihos stands accused of stealing three items of women’s clothing valued at $571 from the Von Maur store located at Yorktown Center, a shopping mall in Lombard.

Pihos was released after posting a $1,500 bond, according to court files.

After serving in the General Assembly from 2003 to 2015, Pihos, 71, lost a bid for re-election in the Republican primary. After that, she ran for the Board of Trustees at College of DuPage (C.O.D.), but lost to Elmhurst resident Deanne Mazzochi as well as Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein, who had formed the “clean slate candidates,” running jointly for three seats. According to the Election Commission, Pihos lost by less than 1 percentage point — fewer than 2,000 votes.

During her time in office, Pihos was appointed to serve on several committees, including the Consumer Protection Committee. Additionally, Pihos was named Illinois Legislator of the Year four times by the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association.

Pihos is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. Nov. 3 at the DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton.

Volunteers needed for ‘Make a Difference Day’

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County invites volunteers of all ages to help a local habitat by removing litter at East Branch Forest Preserve on Glen Ellyn Road in Glendale Heights during “Make a Difference Day” on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Individuals and families as well as school, church, Scout and other groups are invited, but adults must accompany children under 18. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear waterproof boots and gloves as they will be cleaning along shorelines and trails. Participants must register three business days in advance (10 days for groups of five or more) through Volunteer Services at 630-462-8707 or volunteer@dupageforest.org.

The Four C Notes to perform holiday dinner concert The Four C Notes, the Midwest’s only tribute group to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, will be the featured entertainment at a one night only holiday concert on Saturday, Dec. 16. Backed by a live band, The Four C Notes are led by John Michael Coppola who appeared in Chicago’s long running Jersey Boys.

The event is being presented by Navarro Catering & Events.

Titled Seasons Greetings: The Hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, plus Rock and Roll Holiday Classics, the concert will feature songs by the group whose popularity was reignited by the Broadway show Jersey Boys, as well as holiday classics made famous by artists such as The Eagles, The Drifters, Dion and

the Belmonts, Johnny Maestro and many more.

Coppola, who understudied the role of Frankie Valli during the nearly its nearly three-year run in Chicago, started The Four C Notes in 2013.

“I was asked to create a 30-minute set for a wedding performed to music tracks. I hired three friends of

mine from the Chicago theater and music scene, and it sort of took off from there,” he said. “It was as if the universe said ‘Yes! Go with that instinct’. The show has grown to 90 minutes and we’ve been busy ever since, having been blessed to perform at public and private events all over the country.”

IHSA baseball pitchers to get a few more throws in 2018 playoffs

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK High school baseball in Illinois is seven innings, so even the new postseason pitch count of 115 pitches means managers across the state will have to be crafty if their pitchers aren’t on the money.

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA), which oversees high school sports in the state, upped the postseason pitch count last week from 105 to 115. IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said by the time pitchers get to the state series, you’re talking about fewer teams, stronger arms and fewer games.

Anderson added that the IHSA tweaked the pitch count because schools asked for more leeway, but he said the pitch count itself isn’t going anywhere.

“The pitch smart program that’s developed nationally by Major League Baseball and filtered down to the youth level has recommended these limits,” Anderson said. “Obviously [to protect] the safety of young people going forward.”

Last spring was the first season with a pitch count for Illinois high school baseball. Anderson says the IHSA heard some grumbling, particularly from smaller schools who said they didn’t have enough pitchers, but the group didn’t face any major blowback.

“This is just giving a little back to the coaches,” Anderson said, “while still keeping the safety precautions that we have in place now.”

The 115-pitch limit is only for the state playoffs. Pitchers during the regular season will still be limited to 105 throws during the game.

DuPage Public Transit Conference looks to the future Speaker urges County to partner with other public entities

DuPage County recently took part in the John Noel Public Transit Conference, which featured speakers from the Contra Costa County, Calif. GoMentum Program and Argonne National Laboratory Transportation Research Group.

Contra Costa County GoMentum Leader Jack Hall told attendees about county partnerships with private and state, federal and local public entities for the development of innovative transportation systems and autonomous transit.

“This is a very exciting program that is a model of collaboration for all of us to carefully consider,” DuPage County Public Transit Committee Chairman Pete DiCianni said.

“Here in DuPage, we are fortunate to work closely with Argonne National Laboratory as we examine ways to connect transit and technology to provide solutions for commuters, and maintain DuPage County’s standing as a competitive entity

in the Midwest’s transit systems.”

Argonne National Laboratory’s Director of Transportation Research Ann Schlenker discussed her group’s efforts regarding Smart Cities and the deployment of technology that will allow transportation and transit agencies to operate more efficiently and to better inform their users.

The theme of this year’s conference was Smart Cities/Smart Counties. During his opening remarks, RTA Chairman Kirk Dillard pointed to several areas in which the RTA was pivotal in bringing new technology to improve mass transit for customers.

“We need a robust communications network along roads,” Dillard said. “That can include Transit Signal Priority, which is able to sync stoplights with bus routes to provide riders with a faster and more efficient travel experience, especially when a bus is running late.”

The John Noel Conference annually brings together leaders of the regional public transit providers to share past successes, describe the evolution of public transit services and learn about pertinent topics pertaining to public transit services in DuPage County.

Addison Oct. 10 Police said James M. Tranchitella, 32, of Addison, had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department for hit-and-run, failure to give aid or information, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance.

Oct. 8 Andres Fernandez, 43, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper standing on a roadway, making an improp-er turn and no insurance near Lake and Addison at around 2:24 a.m.

Oct. 7 Heriberto Beltran-Becerra, 32, of Addison, was charged with DUI near Fullerton and La Londe at around 4:21 a.m.

A 31-year-old Addison woman was charged with domestic battery in the 300 block of W. Park Ave. at around 7:28 p.m. The suspect admitted to punching her victim in the face, police said.

Oct. 6 Sergio Marin, 51, of Addi-son, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm in the 1-100 block of Marilyn Terrace at around 9 a.m. Po-lice said officers responded to Marin’s residence on Sept. 28 where Marin discharged a firearm inside his residence,

striking the ceiling.

Police said Anthony Vechiola, 33, of Franklin Park, was found to have two failure to appear warrants subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Chestnut at around 9:51 p.m.

Villa Park Oct. 7 Ricardo Vega, 29, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI, aggravated fleeing and elud-ing, endangering the life of a child, two counts of disobey-ng a stop sign, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, driving while using an elec-tronic communication device and no insurance near North and Ardmore at 8:08 p.m.

Oct. 6 Jeremy C. Hunt, 40, of Tinley Park, was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding near Highland and Oakland at 11:42 p.m.

Terrell D. Jackson, 37, of Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct and crim-inal trespass to real property at Motel 6 at 6:49 a.m.

Jennifer A. Osucha, 36, of Bensenville, was charged with aggravated DUI, ob-structing justice, operating an unsafe vehicle, improper lane usage, minimum speed regu-lation and an obstructed windshield near North and Addison at 1:14 a.m.

Oct. 5-Oct. 6 Criminal damage was reported in the 700 block of N. Yale. Police said that be-tween 11 a.m. Oct. 5 and 8 a.m.

Oct. 6, an unknown suspect damaged three windows of a building that was currently unoccupied and for sale.

Theft was reported in the 700 block of Ovaltine. Police said that between

5:15 p.m. Oct. 5 and 6:35 a.m. Oct. 6, an unknown suspect cut out and removed the catalytic converter on a vehicle parked in a parking lot.

Oct. 5 Michael R. Dubon, 24, of Addison, was charged with battery in the 300 block of E. Kenilworth at 11:43 p.m.

Aug. 6. The original com-plaint and warrant was issued on Oct. 5.

Burglary was reported in the 200 block of W. Roosevelt. Police said that between 12:03 and 3:41 a.m., an un-known suspect gained entry to a freezer at a business and stole approximately $5,500 worth of frozen meat prod-ucts.

Justice Department gives Chicago final sanctuary warning

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK President Trump’s Administration is giving Chicago one final warning before it may yank millions of dollars in federal policing grants.

Chicago has until Oct. 27 to prove to the Justice Department that the city’s sanctuary policies, such as not asking about immigration status and not holding people in jail for federal immigration officers, isn’t hurting the law enforcement effort in the city.

The DOJ fired off a letter to Chicago and three other major cities last week that threatened to take away millions of dollars in federal grants if the cities don’t toe the line on the administration’s immigration policy.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said at a press conference that he’s not afraid of the letter.

“I totally, 100% reject the false choice of Donald Trump and the Justice Department,” the mayor said at a press conference last week. “We are not going to be a city that picks between the philosophy of community police and being a welcoming city.”

It’s still uncertain that Chicago will lose any money. A federal judge last month blocked the Justice Department from withholding grant money because Chicago has a pending lawsuit to save its sanctuary city status.

The Justice Department letter is only focused on Chicago. Illinois is not facing scrutiny over the state’s new sanctuary policies.

Report: Illinois among nation leaders in number of school districts, should pursue consolidation ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Illinois has too many school districts, according to the non-profit Civic Federation, and merging them could save taxpayers on their property tax bills.

A consolidation expert says the push-back with combining schools isn’t the need for savings but allowing emotion to get in the way of what may be best for the children.

The U.S. Census says Illinois had 905 school districts in 2012, more than 200 of which are single-school districts. That’s the third most of any state and hundreds more than similarly sized states such as Michigan

and Wisconsin. The Civic Federation suggested in a report that the state should again pursue consolidating more districts to save taxpayer money on the administrative costs it takes to run all of those districts.

Dr. Jim Rosborg, director of the Masters in Education program at McKendree University said both sides of a consolidation fight, should remember the most important question involved.

“Can they provide the academic possibilities needed for a student to be successful in a university environment?” he asked.

Rosborg, a native of Hoopeston

in east-central Illinois, is currently working on a study of school districts in the Metro East area to see if they should consolidate.

The same hurdles to school consolidation continually emerge when it’s brought up. One, Rosborg said, is emotional.

“We all remember our high school days and none of us want to lose a key component of those memories,” he said.

The other obstacle is directly tied to the potential taxpayer savings from a consolidation: administrators don’t want to lose their jobs.

“There are many boards that do not

want to consolidate simply because they don’t want to take the chance of giving up their board position,” Rosborg said.

Another issue with a potential merging of districts is the potential for students in larger, possibly rural districts that would face a onerously long bus ride to and from school.

“No student should have to ride on the bus over an hour to school and over an hour from school,” he said.

“That makes the day too long for young people.”

Ex-Gov. Pat Quinn proposed a forced consolidation of schools in 2011.

Man convicted of 1995 double murder resentenced to natural life in prison DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Judge George Bakalis has resentenced convicted double-murderer Joseph Arrieta, 40, to natural life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 1995 murders of Anthony Moore and Edward Riola.

The resentencing comes following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling (Miller v.

Alabama) that a mandatory sentence of natural life for those under the age of 18 at the time of the crime violates

the 8th amendment’s prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment and that anyone under the age of 18 sentenced to mandatory life in prison must receive a new sentencing hear-ing. Arrieta was 17 years old at the time of the murders, just three months shy of his 18th birthday.

On March 11, 1996, following a jury trial, Arrieta was found guilty of the double murder. At that time, Illinois law mandated a sentence of natural life in prison without the possibility

of parole in the case of double murders. Consequently, a sentencing hearing was unnecessary and Arrieta was sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment, as required by Illinois law.

With the 2012 Miller v. Alabama decision, Arrieta received a sentencing hearing at which time the court heard evidence and arguments for and against his life sentence. The sentencing hearing was held on Aug. 8.

Following the hearing, Judge Bakalis ruled that after careful consideration

of all the relevant factors, as required by the U.S. Supreme Court in Miller v. Alabama, the “petitioner’s original sentence to natural life imprisonment was correct” and that his request “to be sentenced to something less than life imprisonment is denied.”

“In Miller v. Alabama, the Supreme Court ruled that a mandatory life sentence for those under 1 is unconstitutional, not the sentence itself, just the automatic imposition of the life sentence after a finding of guilty,”

Berlin said. “This was a cold-hearted, planned killing by a man who, once informed by others that Mr. Moore was still alive after being shot, actually went back to the room where he shot Mr. Moore and shot him again to make sure he was dead.

“The Miller v. Alabama decision should not have and did not change Mr. Arrieta’s circumstances. He earned his natural life sentence on March 15, 1995 – the day he murdered two innocent men.”

County Stormwater Management operated Flood Control Facilities last Saturday

DuPage County Stormwater Management was operating the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control and Spring Creek Reservoir in Bloomingdale on Salt Creek following precipitation throughout the area which began early Saturday, Oct. 14.

County received rainfall totals ranging from 2.5 inches to up to 5

inches throughout the day on Saturday. The National Weather Service was forecasting an additional 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rainfall through early Sunday.

The rainfall triggered operation of the Elmhurst Quarry and Spring Creek Reservoir, as well as several of the County’s smaller gravity-operated

facilities. Flood forecasts indicated the remaining larger facilities, including the Wood Dale-Itasca Reservoir, Armstrong Park Reservoirs in Carol Stream and Fawell Dam in Naperville, would go into operation later Saturday as needed.

DuPage County Stormwater Management staff continued to monitor

stream elevations throughout the rain event and provided updates as they became available. Residents were warned that this precipitation could have caused localized and flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas.

School districts 4, 45, 48 and 88 meet as Joint Board On Oct. 12, District 88 and its associate elementary school districts – Addison School District 4, District 45 and Salt Creek School District 48 – hosted their annual Learning Compact Joint Board Meeting.

That event is an opportunity for Board of Education members from all four districts to come together to discuss important information taking place in each district, as well as issues facing public education. This year’s featured topic was a recap of “Day of Champions,” an educational program that took place this past spring to engage students in approaching drug education in schools. “Day of Champions” took place on May 15, 2017, as a partnership between District 88, AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center GlenOaks, 12 local schools and the villages of Addison, Carol Stream and Glendale Heights. The program also was supported by the DuPage Regional Office of Education (Regional Superintendent Dr. Darlene Ruscitti) and DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin through a drug forfeiture grant.

Willowbrook senior Betty-Ann Garrett has been named as the Wintrust Athlete of the Week for Oct. 13 by Wintrust and NBC Sports Chicago.

Garrett is a kicker on the Willowbrook Football Team and credits her success in that position to the nearly 15 years she has been playing soccer. Growing up, she was always interested in football, but didn’t start playing until the summer before her freshman year.

Garrett is being recognized for her contributions to the Willowbrook football team – including kicking eight extra points to help the Warriors to a 56-6 win over Morton on Oct. 6 – as well as her work off the field. D’Ambrose rushes for 316 yards and four scores in Addison Trail football win Addison Trail boys soccer team beats Mt. Carmel

The Addison Trail football team scored a 34-7 victory over Morton in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division game in Addison.

The win broke a five-game losing streak and put the Blazers at 3-5 overall and 1-4 in WSC Gold play.

Addison Trail finishes out the 2017 season in Maywood Saturday at 1 p.m., against Proviso East.

The Blazers led 7-0 after the first quarter and 14-0 at halftime. Addison Trail extended the lead to 27-7 after three quarters.

Addison Trail running back Nick D’Ambrose ran 21 times for 316 yards and scored four touchdowns in the win. He had a 73-yard long run and averaged 15.0 yards per carry.

Dennis Ionikov caught three passes for 13 yards and AJ Parnell caught one pass for 13 yards.

Addison Trail had 365 yards of total offense.

D’Ambrose also returned a kickoff 41 yards.

Christian Cici returned a punt 43 yards for a touchdown and Vince Daudelin had a 16-yard punt return.

On the season, D’Ambrose has rushed for 888 yards on 114 carries and has six rushing touchdowns and seven total touchdowns. He’s only played in five games this season. It was his third game of the year rushing for 200 or more yards. He had 224 yards on 24 carries to go with two touchdowns against Glenbard South and also ran for 224 yards on 32 carries against Glenbard West.

Addison Trail boys soccer The Addison Trail boys soccer team has provided plenty of excitement of late.

The Blazers recently beat Mt. Carmel 1-0 in a non-conference game on senior night at Addison Trail. Mt. Carmel was ranked No. 18 in the Chicago area at the time.

Addison Trail also lost 2-1 to perennial state power Morton in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division game in Berywn.

“That was a great game at their place,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini.

The Blazers also recently tied Hinsdale Central 2-2 in a WSC crossover game. Addison Trail scored with 14 seconds left in the game to tie the score.

“Our team really is playing well of late and is looking forward to the playoffs,” said Dini.

The Blazers have been bolstered by the play of Alexis DelaPaz, along with goalies Jean Avila and Sam Sandoval. “Alexis is playing really well,” said Dini. “He has really emerged over the past two weeks with his ball control and distributing to teammates. Both goalies have stepped up their games at the right time of the season. It has been great to see both of them improve over the past month.”

Junior midfielder Melvin Mora was leading the team in scoring through late last week with six goals and four assists. Senior midfielder Luis Saucedo had three goals and four assists, while senior forward Christian Garcia had three goals and three assists.

The coach also lauded the play of senior forward Osbaldo Murillo. “He scored against Hinsdale Central,” Dini noted. “He has good height and speed and we moved him from defense to offense about a week ago. He has given us another dimension up top and is good at 50/50 balls.”

Dini has been pleased with the team’s offensive

makeover of late. “The offense has improved over the past week with our guys getting to scoring spots on the field so we can have some success,” he said.

“We are creating more opportunities with our speed and angle runs by our forwards. I also have moved some of our better defenders up at times to get more numbers up toward the penalty box. Our set plays have improved as well so we are taking advantage of corner kicks and throw-ins near the top of the box.”

The Blazers have been sound on defense throughout the season, Dini noted. “Our defense has been really solid all year long. With playing some of the best teams in the state, we are holding our own. I play six defenders and of the six, only one is a senior.

The other four are juniors and one is a sophomore.

This is great news for next year’s team because most of them will be back.”

Through the first 20 games of the season, the Blazers have allowed more than two goals only six times and have four shutouts. Avila has a 1.42 goalsagainst average, while Sandoval, a junior, has a 2.38 GAA. “Both goalies bring a little something different to the game so our plan is to play both during the playoffs by giving them each a half,” said Dini. “They really haven’t separated themselves from each other.

We are lucky to have them both.”

Addison Trail, through late last week, had played six teams currently ranked in the top 20.

“Our team is believing we can beat anyone we play,” said Dini. “Although our record is 1-4-1 against those teams, we have been really competitive in those games besides one. It feels like every game we play is against a strong team. That is getting us ready for the state tournament. We beat a good Mt. Carmel team that I think will make it to at least sectionals, so that was a really good confidence boost. I also think our communication on the field has improved and has allowed for us to be more organized.”

Due to the foul weather that hit the area this past Saturday, Addison Trail’s first playoff game against Elk Grove was moved to this past Monday. The winner was to face York on Tuesday at Glenbard East in regional semifinal action.

Mello hired as Fenton’s new girls basketball coach

No stranger to Bison athletics over the years

Fenton has turned to a longtime familiar face for its new girls basketball coach.

Dave Mello, a longtime multi-sport coach at the Bensenville high school, is the new girls basketball coach at Fenton. He is the school’s third coach since the end of last season, replacing longtime coach Tim Anderson and Megan Andrews, who was hired to replace Anderson.

Mello stepped down from his position as head girls basketball coach at Bartlett High School to take the Fenton position. Mello is a physical education teacher at Bartlett.

“I had been in the Fenton program for 15 seasons prior to going to Bartlett,” said Mello. “When the Fenton job came open for the second time in six months, it was a sign that it was meant to be. If it was anywhere else but Fenton I wouldn’t have considered leaving the Bartlett job.”

Mello also is currently the varsity assistant girls volleyball coach and the school’s head softball coach. He’s been a coach at Fenton since 1995.

“I have a lot invested in Fenton athletics,” he said. “I want to do what I can to build the girls basketball program back up to where it should be.”

Mello said it was tough leaving the Bartlett job. “I teach there so that made it even more difficult of a decision,” he said. “But I had to do what I felt my calling was right now.”

Mello has taught PE and driver’s education at Bartlett since 2002. Mello did his student-teaching at Fenton.

“I didn’t get right into teaching at that point. I worked for a company in Elk Grove first,” he said.

Mello noted he started coaching boys soccer at Fenton in the fall of 1995. He also coached girls basketball and softball at now defunct Driscoll High School in Addison. He made it over to the girls volleyball and softball programs at Fenton around the turn of the century. He became the head softball coach at Fenton in 2008 and was co-head coach of the girls volleyball team with Josh Payton for two years. He’s been with the Fenton girls volleyball varsity team since 2011.

One thing Mello is excited about is this year’s senior players on the Fenton girls basketball team.

“Those seniors were my last freshmen group at Fenton,” he said.

Mello is chomping at the bit to get going and elevate the Bison program.

“We know we play in a tough conference with some private schools, but there is no reason we can’t continue to get better and compete,” he said.

“Our number-one goal is to establish a culture here and attract kids who want to be involved with Fenton girls basketball. In our initial meeting, we had 52 girls who had signed up for basketball or expressed an interest.

That’s a great start to have that many. We had some T-shirts made up because we want to get that logo out in the school. Some of the girls wore them the next day and there were some staff members who said there was more talk about Fenton girls basketball that one day than there has been the previous four or five years put together. We’re going to get out there and compete and see where it takes us. We’re going to establish this program and get it on track. We’ll worry about the conference and the regional down the road.”

Mello again stressed the importance of being at Fenton. “Since I started coaching there in 1995, it’s a place that holds a lot of importance for me. I have a lot of blue and orange in my closet,” he said. “I do some driver’s ed behind the wheel for them in summer, coach the different sports there and do the summer camps. For me it’s like my second home. My family always comes first, but Fenton is like that second home. I’ve received nothing but great support from the administration and teachers and there has been great buy-in from the athletes there.”

Mello feels success in the program can be achieved. “You hear people sometimes say Fenton never wins. Why can’t we?” he asked. “We’ve had success in softball. We lost 1-0 last year in the regional title game to Whitney Young and had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh against them. That’s a perfect example. We need to get these girls to believe that we can compete and we will. We want the days of, ‘It’s just Fenton again,’ to be over.”

Mello said former Fenton all-state softball player Tara Lawson will be his varsity assistant coach.

“We’re ready to go,” he said. “I can’t wait for practice to start.”

Eight different Warriors score TD’s

The points keep piling up for the Willowbrook football team.

The Warriors were 57-12 winners over Proviso East in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division game in Villa Park.

The win pushed Willowbrook to 7-1 overall and kept it atop the WSC Gold standings with a 5-0 record.

Quarterback John Taylor was 4 of 5 passing for 105 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, the Warriors piled up 343 rushing yards on only 28 carries, averaging 12.3 yards every time they touched the ball.

Jack Jessen ran 16 times for 160 yards and one touchdown. Chris Diaz ran four times for 129 yards and a score. Christian Washington ran three times for nine yards and had a touchdown and Taylor ran

two times for 11 yards and scored a touchdown. Franshun Jordan ran two times for 26 yards.

Martique Barksdale caught a 51yard touchdown pass, while Scott Tumilty caught a 10-yard touchdown. Sikander Zafar caught a 30-yard pass and Jacob Entwistle caught a 15-yard pass.

Willowbrook had 448 yards of total offense.

On defense, Liam Dilger and Entwistle each recorded seven tackles.

Kevon Dobbins had six tackles, while Washington had five tackles.

Entwistle had 3.5 tackles for loss.

Washington and Nick Rushing each had three tackles for loss. Keion Coakley, Emmanuel Chavez and D’onte Gholston each had two tackles for loss. Tyler Guerrero had 1.5 tackles for loss.

As a team, Willowbrook had 19.5 tackles for loss and eight quarterback sacks. Rushing led the way with 1.5 quarterback sacks. Entwistle, Washington, Coakley, Corey Holloway

and Gholston each had a sack.

Jordan had a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown, while Nick Sabatino and Sam Tumilty each had 2 pass deflections.

Gholston returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown.

Eight different Willowbrook players scored a touchdown in the game (Taylor, Washington, Diaz, Scott Tumilty, Jessen, Jordan, Barksdale and Gholston). Kicker Betty-Ann Garrett kicked seven extra points.

On the season, Jessen has run for 1,437 yards and 16 touchdowns, while Diaz has 502 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Taylor has run for 316 yards and four touchdowns.

Willowbrook closes out the regular season Friday at home against Downers Grove South in a WSC Gold game that will decide the conference title. If Willowbrook wins, it will earn the WSC Gold title outright. Downers South is 4-1 in conference play.

IC Catholic Prep football team defeats Glenbard South Knights earn share of Division title with victory

The IC Catholic Prep football team defeated Glenbard South 51-14 in a battle of unbeaten Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division teams.

The Knights moved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in MSC Blue play. IC Catholic Prep clinched no worse of a share of the conference title. Glenbard South fell to 5-3 and 3-1. Riverside-Brookfield (7-1) also has a 3-1 conference record.

In the win against Glenbard South, IC Catholic Prep quarterback CJ West completed 15 of 21 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns.

The Knights also racked up 165 rushing yards on 31 carries. Lazerick Eatman ran 12 times for 76 yards and a touchdown, while West ran 10

times for 26 yards and scored two touchdowns. Kyle Franklin ran eight times for 47 yards and Tommy Ryan had a carry for 16 yards.

Six different IC Catholic Prep receivers caught passes from West. Khali Saunders had three catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Eatman caught 3 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. He had a 61-yard catch, while Saunders had a 41-yard catch.

Jacob Lytton caught two passes for 40 yards. Kevin Cooke had a catch for 17 yards, while Sean Hipskind had three catches for 43 yards. Khalil Saunders made three catches for 23 yards.

IC Catholic Prep racked up 466 yards of total offense against the conference co-leader.

On defense, Kemon Reese led the way with seven tackles. Michael Johnson and Kevin Cooke each had six tackles.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team dropped a 25-19, 25-17 West Suburban Conference Gold Division match to Hinsdale South recently.

Charlotte Dewyer had two kills and six digs. Katie Pettinger had six assists, while Taylor Balsitis had three kills and one dig. Payton Ceh had one kill and five digs. Jenna Krenzel had two aces and three digs.

Caliegh Tuma had one ace and

one dig. Kaitlyn Karcz had two kills, while Katelyn McCann had two kills, one assist and 12 digs. Emma Barrington had two kill, while Marissa Marcello had two kills, three assists and two digs. Jessica Ragucci had two kills and one dig.

The loss dropped Willowbrook to 2-3 in WSC Gold play.

The Warriors also lost to York 2515, 25-11 in a WSC crossover match.

The loss put Willowbrook at 9-17 overall.

Mary Stolper is currently Principal Flute of the Grant Park Symphony Festival Orchestra and Music of the Baroque Orchestra, both in Chicago.

fort to limit carbon emissions from coal-fired plants. Legal challenges have prevented the regulations from ever actually taking effect.

“The Clean Power Plan going away means that power plants that could not comply with the air emissions limits are going to be kept online,” said Phil Gonet, president of the Illinois Coal Association. “We’ll be able to provide them with coal to provide reliable energy.”

Uncertainty about the regulations helped contribute to a recent wave of shutdowns of coal-fired plants. More than 400 have closed their doors in the past six years nationwide. Gonet says the whole idea never made much sense.

“Even Gina McCarthy, the former administrator of the EPA, admitted if the United States implemented the Clean Power Plan, it would have an impact on global [carbon dioxide] emissions of less than 1%,” Gonet said. “Our point was, it’s going to cost billions of dollars in more costly power from renewables or wherever to replace coal and it would have a negligible impact on emissions worldwide. Why are we doing this?”

The EPA estimates that repealing the Clean Power Plan could lead to up to $33 billion dollars in avoided compliance costs in 2030. And Gonet says the increased regulatory certainty would mean a brighter future for Illinois coal.

“I see coal [in Illinois] that is easy to extract,” Gonet said. “The coal mines are very productive, in terms of tons per man hour produced.

Our operators know how to get the product to the end market. And in a shrinking marketplace, the low-cost producer is going to prevail.”

Total coal production in Illinois is expected to be up about 12% in 2017, to 50 million tons. Illinois supports about 3,300 jobs in the coal industry, down from about 4,400 just three years ago, and a high of 10,000 back in 1990.

Gonet says the rollback is a shot in the arm for the industry but admits it’s not a cure-all.

“The [rollback of] the Clean Power Plan, while we welcome it, is not going to bring those plants back,” Gonet said, “but it’s going to stop the bleeding and stop the further reduction in coal being used.”

Travel Wisconsin is reminding travelers that nature doesn’t wait when it comes to Wisconsin’s autumn color. A new fall campaign from the state tourism office uses drone footage of the state’s spectacular autumn color and a full-on immersive experience in Chicago’s Union Station to encourage travelers to book their fall vacations.

Travel Wisconsin wrapped an entire hallway in Union Station in an enchanting fall theme with a towering 8-foot hourglass as the main attraction. As the colors change in Wisconsin, which is known for it’s 16 million acres of forest, leaves will slip through the hourglass remind-

ing daily commuters and travelers to “see the fall leaves before the leaves fall.” Vacationers are encouraged to start their planning by visiting the award-winning online Travel Wisconsin Fall Color Report.

The campaign kicked off earlier this month with a fall TV spot that utilized drone technology to capture close-ups of people enjoying outdoor activities, then zooming out to a backdrop panorama of fall color.

“Fall is a short travel season so we need to make a big impact in a small window of time to urge travelers not to wait when it comes to their vacation plans,” said Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett. “The hourglass promotes the fast-moving nature of fall color and the entire campaign captures the beauty and the fun to be had in Wisconsin. One look at the hourglass and travelers will want to head for the next Hiawatha train to Wisconsin. We’ll be ready to greet them when they arrive!”
