ADDISON — Since 1991, community members in Addison have gathered each year to raise money for local causes that benefit various causes near and dear to the heart of our community. More than $800,000 has been raised and distributed, to be used right here in Addison – from feeding the needy to scholarship opportunities, and from aiding those with substance abuse problems to providing cultural and educational programs.

The 25th Annual Mayor’s Community Charity Ball will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Alta Villa Banquets, 430 N. Addison Road, and the community is invited and encouraged to attend. Dinner tickets are $85 per person, a portion of which supports the 20 organizations that are a part of the event. Those who purchase tickets by Oct. 30 pay just $80.

Police still seek identity of deceased woman Train fatality occurred Friday afternoon in downtown Elmhurst

ELMHURST — According to a release issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, police are still investigating a pedestrian fatality, which occurred on the Union Pacific Rail line involving inbound Metra Train #52.

On Friday, October 9, 2015 at 3:20 p.m. witnesses reported seeing a female/white, 60-70 years of age step in front of the inbound train, east of York Rd., near First Ave. and Palmer Drive.

At press time, police were still attempting to identify the victim who is described as a female/white, 60-70 years, 130 lbs., with white or light colored hair. The victim was wearing blue jogging pants and a white nightgown with a laced bow and size 7 shoes.

She had a Lina purse containing only a house key on an orange ring and eyeglasses.

The victim was not wearing

jewelry and did not have any identification among her pos-

sessions.

ADDISON — The Addison Park and Recreation Foundation recently hosted the Inaugural Addison Senior Par 3 Golf Tournament at the award winning Links & Tees Golf Facility.

“The event was an awesome first-time event,” said Don Jessen, chair of the Addison Park and Recreation Foundation. “From the registration and check-in mixer to the ceremonial first tee shot by Links & Tees golf pro Charles Sims to the ‘chat of champions’ between the two age division winners during the post tournament lunch and trophy presentations.”

The Foundation congratulates Joe Garbarski, champion of the 55-64 age bracket, and to Ron Bruns, who won the 65+ age bracket. Both will officially accept their championship trophies on an upcoming edition of the popular cable TV show, The Addison Sports Special with Don Figarelli.

Zombie Boot Camp From Oct. 26 – 29 from 7-8 p.m. each evening, the Addison Park District is hosting a Zombie Boot Camp at Club Fitness for ages 14 and older. Unlike any other, Zombie Survival Boot Camp is group exercise unlike that urges participants to workout as if preparing for a Zombie Apocalypse. It includes such activities as running, jumping, lifting, pulling, striking, and other calisthenics.

ELMHURST — Elmhurst Hospital has awarded its 2015 EMS (Emergency Medical Services) “Run of the Year” to members of the Lombard Fire Department and Oakbrook Terrace Fire Protection District for their efforts in rescuing a man in January who was found outside on a driveway, unconscious and suffering from a severe case of hypothermia. He had a body temperature of 77 degrees (normal is 98.6) and was near death.

Lombard Fire Department Lieutenant Frank Gallione, and paramedics Tim Hogan and Adam Kruckenberg, along with Oakbrook Terrace Fire Protection District paramedics Chad Mezzera and Louis Vicelli, used hot packs and blankets to re-warm the patient, who regained consciousness and was transported to the Emergency Department at Elmhurst Hospital. Three days later, he was released from the hospital.

More than 50 EMS personnel and police officers were honored at Elmhurst Hospital’s third annual Recognition Dinner on September 23. The event caps off the year-long “Run of the Month” program in which area paramedics

Oct. 2 Matthew J. Day, 25, of Addison, was arrested near Lake and Lincoln at around 12:30 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Day was found to be DUI. He was charged with DUI. Oct. 1 Oscar Hernandez, 19, of Carol Stream, was arrested in Glendale Heights at around 11:27 a.m. Police said Hernandez had an original warrant out of the Addison Police Department.

Sept. 23 Kayla A. Flynn, 19, of Addison, and Lauren S. Sherwood, 18, of Lombard, were cited at 10:25 p.m. for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said Flynn and Sherwood were in possession of a glass pipe.

Villa Park Oct. 3 • Daniel Cervantes, 21, and Raul Solis-Espinoza, 22, both of Addison, were arrested at a local store at around 2:40 p.m. Aug. 19 and charged with retail theft. The original complaint and arrest warrant were issued Oct. 3.

Thank you for the goldfish, I think T his is an open letter to the Carnival Guy who “awarded” my kid with a goldfish at the local fair this past summer. What can I say?

Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Everyone knows that nurturing, feeding and otherwise sustaining any and all household pets (including goldfish, salamanders and tree frogs) is at the top of every mom’s job description. We live to de-poop the fish tank.

But back to that fateful day.

I innocently sent my kid to the carnival thinking maybe he’d come home with a bellyful of corn dogs or mini donuts.

Instead and he marched into the house with a clear plastic bag filled with water and a goldfish (not necessarily in that order). He was beaming ­– my son, not the fish. To say he likes critters is an understatement.

It was his lucky day!

I wasn’t feeling the love. I’d sworn off fish as pets years ago, after three large tanks and many births, deaths and countless instances of parents eating their young. Fish can be complicated, barbaric beings.

That said, our current situation seemed simple enough for fish aficionados like us. We could deal with just one tiny fish. How much could he eat and poop?

Problem was, our situation was about to multiply.

My kid is a critter magnet, and the apple doesn’t fall far

from the tree. I’m a bit of a sucker for them myself. It seems other moms don’t share my weakness. A few of my son’s friends also won fish at the carnival but they knew better than to take them home.

Before long, a second carnival “prize” showed up at our doorstep. And then another.

And another. Apparently other moms have mastered the word, “No,” better than me.

That is how we went from zero goldfish to four in less than an hour. I’ve seen fish multiply before, but never like this. We looked for a larger bowl. We put in some rocks and de-chlorinated water. We tried to make the tank homey for our new pets. It took some effort, but we got the four musketeers settled in their new habitat and I remained optimistic that our fish situation was a temporary one. I figured they’d be belly up and ready for the flusher in

short order. How healthy could four carnival goldfishes be?

In a word: Very.

Apparently carnival life is a great start for goldfish. One might think they would be squished together in large numbers in small tanks all swishing and swashing as the carnival travels from one town to another. Our goldfish flourish with swishing and swashing.

They’ve completed the twoplus hour car trip with us to the lake three times now and we haven’t drowned a single one.

It’s been a couple of months, and our fish are thriving. I feed them twice a day. When I do, they congregate at the top of the water in anticipation of their goldfish flakes. I don’t want to brag, but as goldfish go, I think they are at the top of the intelligence meter. They have voracious appetites and are growing bigger.

Frank Lloyd Wright day trip I first met Cindy several years ago when I hosted her for a weekend at the start of her exchange program.

She ended up being placed with a host family outside of Chicago and went to college at a community college there for her one year in America.

Since the locale turned out be relatively close, I hired Cindy to be my assistant one day a week doing organizational duties for me. Mainly we took day trips so I could show her the glorious Midwest. We are now forever friends and she comes back every year as she fell head over heels in love with Chicago.

At the ripe age of 26, she has traveled extensively, some trips with friends or family, some solo. Her love of travel and love of learning make her a wonderful houseguest. Cindy knows more about Chicago than many natives. She knows more about a lot of things than many people, or at least me.

This past weekend we offered availability to do anything and go anywhere with her. She has

studied Frank Lloyd Wright (and American architecture in general) so we traipsed up to Spring Green, Wisconsin to tour Taliesin, Frank’s home and studio.

Taliesin (pronounced Tally – ESS – in) is on land where Frank grew up, on the Wisconsin river, set on the hillside with a view to make you sigh as if you’ve seen Heaven on earth. Taliesin is a Welsh word meaning “shining brow” and that is where he placed his dwelling, as if it is part of the jutting sandstone bluffs.

The top of the hill, the crown, is not built upon. Frank liked his architecture to be organic, seeming part of the environment. He used local woods and stone, and kept his color scheme true to natural tones of the area. Even

at his farm there, he had only certain chickens, cows and pigs to match his color palette.

We toured the 600-acre estate and the 21,000 square foot home (37,000 square feet if you include the courtyards) along with his school that still houses and teaches graduate level architecture students. Fascinating and inspiring, I still would never have commissioned Frank to build a home for me. His ceilings are too low.

A fabulous day was spent in Wisconsin taking in Frank, the scenery, and cheese curds.

I fancy architecture and am a bit of an information junkie, but not a devotee of any one thing or person. I appreciate people like Cindy who are walking fact factories.

Frank designed nearly 500 homes and buildings in his long career. He narrowed down a list of 38 that he really loved and only 21 of his creations boast a red tile with his initials signifying his stamp of approval.

Imagine our delight the next day when we were able to show

Cindy the Laurent House in our hometown of Rockford, IL and read that it made Frank’s list of his fave 38. And imagine our surprise when we discovered it has the signature red tile at the entry door.

I may not be a wealth of deep information but I do love to provide a lovely experience for guests and find things that light them up. My thanks to Frank and the Laurent House board for making a German gal (and this American gal) very happy.

Lessons I learned include there is always something new to explore and appreciate, and there are always treasures under one’s nose that we may not discover until someone else comes along to stir our interest.

To that, I give my own stamp of approval.

of going belly up anytime soon. We’ve even committed the universal gesture of permanent pethood. We’ve named them: Big Goldy, Little Goldy, Brownie and Spot. I guess our quadruplets are here to stay.

So that is why I’m writing today. It is because of you, Carnival Guy, that we are in our current situation. We owe our good fortune to you (as do Goldy et al.) and for that I send a weary, albeit wet, “Thanks.”

The fish have sort of grown on us and I guess we’ll keep them. As for next year and your carnival, we may have to take a pass. I think my kid will be busy that day – changing the water in the fish tank.

Students will learn to be an “upstander” not a “bystander,” as a demonstration of faith and values by showing respect for others, treating others with dignity and performing ran-

While 63 percent of respondents said they do believe Social Security benefits will be available to them when they retire, many were confused about who qualifies for benefits, how

• More than seven in 10 respondents mistakenly thought that 65 is the age when everyone can begin drawing full retirement benefits. Actually, your full retirement age depends on what year you were born.

• Fifty-five percent of those surveyed incorrectly believed they could continue working during retirement while collecting full Social Security benefits, regardless of their age. If you work during retirement, but have not yet reached your full retirement age, your Social Security benefits may be reduced if you earn too much. Once you reach full retirement age, those withheld benefits will be repaid over your lifetime.

“Perhaps the greatest Social Security deficit in this country is the

lack of education around the retirement benefits of the program,” says Michael R. Fanning, executive vice president, U.S. Insurance Group, MassMutual. “With millions of Americans nearing retirement each year, many may be at risk of underutilizing a critical component of their retirement income stream.”

Still, some good news emerged from the survey. Americans seem aware that Social Security should be only one component of their overall retirement savings plan. Just 39 percent said they expected to rely more on Social Security than their personal savings or income during retirement, and just 15 percent expected to rely solely on Social Security.

Addison Trail to present fall play, ‘Twisted Tales of Terror’ ADDISON — Get into the spirit of Halloween later this month with Addison Trail’s fall play, “Twisted Tales of Terror”

The play will be performed Oct. 22, 24, 29 and 30 (7 p.m. all days, as well as a 2 p.m. performance on Oct. 24) at Addison Trail High School.

Watch as classic horror stories such as “Frankenstein,” “Dracula” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” come to life – but not in the way you would expect. The tales get a new twist as Claudia, a Guardian of Dark Tales, retells them to her husband, Igor. Instead of being terrifying, the legends become

humorous. Characters behave in unexpected ways, and accidents occur, but all turns out well in the end.

“This is a relatively new play, so it’s the first time it will be performed at Addison Trail,” said Anna Jakubka, Addison Trail Theatre Director. “The story is perfect for the season and allows us to showcase the talents of more than 40 of our students.”

Jakubka added “Twisted Tales of Terror” is a different type of show than Addison Trail typically performs and features unique costumes, makeup and hair that fit the “horror” theme.

“It’s a bit quirky and should definitely lead to some laughter from the crowd,” Jakubka said.

Addison Trail senior Alex Toay will play Claudia and said this is her first lead role.

“Claudia’s passion is telling stories, but she somehow always messes them up and

ends up interacting with the characters,” Toay said. “I love Halloween, so I’m thrilled to be part of this show!”

And life will imitate art for Toay, as the part of Igor will be played by her boyfriend, junior Max Dziabis.

“It’s a bit of a challenge to walk hunched over like Igor,” Dziabis said with a laugh. “A lot of my character’s role is reacting to the exposition from Claudia, so I have to be right on with my movements and how I respond to what she says.”

He added audience members can expect to hear familiar scary stories told in a new and fun way.

“What makes this show unique is the level of engagement with the audience,” Dziabis said. “There is virtually no fourth wall (the imaginary “wall” at the front of the stage in a traditional three-walled theatre).”

KCs Juan Pablo II Council donates to D-88 program ADDISON — On Oct. 5, Knights of Columbus Juan Pablo II Council No. 14069 gave a monetary donation to benefit the District 88 Transition Program.

That program helps students ages 19 to 21 who have disabilities learn life skills, obtain job training in a community setting and transition to life after District 88. One of the job-training sites for students is the Perks & Possibilities Café, which is open from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday inside the Addison Public Library.

“Knights of Columbus is a national program that raises funds for individuals who have intellectual disabilities,” said Chuck Seriano, Treasurer for Knights of Columbus Juan Pablo II Council No. 14069.

“Perks & Possibilities Café is a tremendous asset in our community to help train young people to obtain employment. The Transition Program is top-notch and has excellent results, and we want to support this wonderful opportunity for students.”

Seriano said the money was raised through a fundraiser hosted by the council, and he and Deputy Grand Knight Michael Di Capua presented the donation.

An exceptional characteristic of the café is that it is a community project that has united intergovernmental agencies, local businesses and donors to support student learning. Perks & Possibilities Café opened in March 2011 and is a result of the support provided by the community.

Addison Trail boys golf team qualifies four for sectional play Gagliano qualifies for girls golf sectional; Blazers girls volleyball team defeats Proviso East

The Addison Trail boys golf team was well-represented at the Class 3A Conant sectional earlier this week.

The Blazers qualified four golfers out of the recent Class 3A Lake Park regional.

Addison Trail missed qualifying for sectionals as a team by one spot. The Blazers finished fourth in the Lake Park field with a 346 team score.

The top three teams advance to sectionals.

Freshman Blaise Morris shot 82 and earned a spot at sectionals. He was joined by senior Jacob Bartkiewicz, who shot 87. Junior Georgie Nergi shot 88 and also qualified as did junior Santino Bilatta who shot an 89.

Sara Gagliano shot a 93 and earned the final individual sectional-qualifying position.

Alyssa Pham had one ace and one dig. Alyssa Ramir had one dig. Anastasia Labadessa had 10 aces, one kill, 16 assists and seven digs. Carla Muell had one assist and two digs.

Ciara Williams finished with two assists and five digs. Danielle Tulke had one ace and two digs. Jessica Mell had three kills. Keara Schmitt had one kill.

Nicole Pudlo added five kills, while Nina Muell had two aces and three kills. Sarah Garces had two kills and two digs, while Sarah Petrbok had two aces, seven kills and two digs.

Addison Trail had 16 services aces and hit .304 as a team.

The Blazers also dropped a 29-27, 25-22 WSC Gold decision to Downers Grove South.

Pham had two aces and four digs. Labadessa had 15 assists and nine digs. Williams finished with one assist and seven digs. Tulke had one dig. Mell

had one kill, one assist and one dig. Schmitt had six kills, hit .400 and had one dig. Pudlo had one kill and one dig. Nina Muell had one ace, three kills and four digs. Petrbok had six kills and six digs. Mell had four total blocks, while Nina Muell had three total blocks. Pudlo and Schmitt each had two total blocks. Addison Trail had 10 total blocks in the match.

Addison Trail is the No. 7 overall seed in the upcoming Class 4A Riverside-Brookfield sectional. The Blazers open postseason play in the Class 4A Addison Trail regional at home against No. 9 seed Leyden on Oct. 27. If Addison Trail won that match it would play for the regional title on Oct. 29 against either York (No. 1 seed), Jones (No. 16 seed) or Curie (No. 17 seed).

Fenton sophomore Andrew Hill received some good news at the recent Class 3A Lake Park regional.

Hill shot an 86 and earned an individual sectional-qualifying berth. Hill played earlier this week in the Class 3A Conant sectional in Hoffman Estates.

Fenton shot 396 as a team and finished seventh in the regional.

Fenton girls volleyball Through late last week the Fenton girls volleyball team was 12-18 overall.

In recent action, the Bison dropped a 25-10, 25-18 Metro

Suburban Conference West Division match to RiversideBrookfield.

Fenton hosted Elgin St. Edward earlier in the week for its annual Volley for the Cure match.

“We are very excited to participate in a match like this each year,” said Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer. “This year our girls sold about 400 extra T-shirts. We use that money plus the money we make at the match as our donation.”

Fenton received the No. 13 seed in the sectional it will compete in. “We are hoping to still get that first conference win,” she said. “Other than that, our focus is now shifting to the state tournament. We received the No. 13 seed which is the best seed we have had since we moved up to Class 4A.” Fenton opens play in the

Class 4A Chicago Whitney Young regional Monday, Oct. 26 against Proviso East (No. 20 seed).

Through late last week, Paulina Milanowski was leading the team with 41 aces. Emmy Burris was tops in kills with 187. Milanowski was leading in assists with 337, while Melinda Boehm was first in blocks with 36. Jessica Bango was first in digs with 205.

Fenton boys soccer The Fenton boys soccer team earned a No. 2 sub-sectional seed in the upcoming Class 2A Hampshire sectional.

Fenton opens play in the Class 2A Hampshire regional on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. against No. 6 seed Kaneland. If Fenton won that match it will advance to the regional championship game Friday, Oct. 23 at Hampshire.

Willowbrook football moves closer to playoff eligibility Addison Trail, Fenton lose Week 7 contests

The Willowbrook football team moved one step closer to a possible playoff berth.

The Warriors downed Proviso East 47-14 in a recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest.

The win moved Willowbrook to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in WSC Gold action.

Willowbrook needs one more win to become playoff eligible and two wins to earn an automatic playoff berth.

The Warriors host Downers Grove South Friday night and then travel to Leyden in Week 9. Downers South comes into Week 8 with a 2-5 record, while Leyden is 3-4.

Willowbrook also remained tied with Hinsdale South in the loss column atop the WSC Gold. Hinsdale South has a 4-1 conference record, while Willowbrook is at 3-1.

Willowbrook beat Hinsdale South earlier this season.

Addison Trail football The Addison Trail football team dropped to 3-4 overall after a 13-7 loss in double overtime at Morton.

The Blazers also fell to 2-3 in WSC Gold action.

Addison Trail returns to action Saturday afternoon on the road in Maywood against winless Proviso East (0-7, 0-4). The Blazers close out their regular season in Week 9 against unbeaten Glenbard West.

Fenton football The Fenton football team lost a recent 25-0 decision to Riverside-Brookfield in Metro Suburban Conference West Division play in Bensenville.

The loss put Fenton at 2-5 and eliminated the Bison from playoff consideration.

Fenton dropped to 0-3 in conference play.

Fenton returns to action Friday in its home regularseason finale against Wheaton Academy (4-3, 0-3).

The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team put a rough patch of play squarely behind it with a pair of recent Metro Suburban Conference West Division victories.

IC downed Elgin St. Edward and Aurora Central Catholic to move to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in

conference play.

“We’ve started to put things back together,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy D’Amore.

“The girls are playing well. It’s a focus thing. The girls have refocused their energy back into the team, into the gym and into our goals. Practice has been more intense, which has really helped.

In matches we are attacking more efficiently and we’re starting to find open spots on the floor instead of just swinging. We’re doing a better job of creating points. That’s what we needed.

Coach (Scott) Forcash and I are extremely proud of this group. We knew going in the competition we were going to face. Our athletes hung in there over their rounds, not giving in in the least. “All of our six golfers shot the same or bettered

their round from the front to the back nine, which is a testament to their perseverance and as a coach this is one of the foundations we preach.”

Walker noted Willowbrook returns three varsity golfers and 14 golfers from the frosh-soph team for next year. “The outlook is very bright for our future,” he said.
