The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) announced on Friday, Oct. 4 that 142 public school-based early childhood sites received the Gold Circle of Quality in fiscal year 2019 through ExceleRate Illinois, the state’s system for supporting continuous improvement among early learning providers.

Addison School District 4 has learned that its preschool programs at the Addison Early Learning Center and Army Trail School were among those that received the Gold Circle of Quality rating as announced by the Illinois State Board of Education.

“It is especially gratifying to be one of only three public school districts in DuPage County to have received this recognition,” said ASD4 Superintendent John Langton. “Congratulations to Dr. Erin Alexander and the entire early childhood team, which includes para-educators, teachers, related service staff, and our families.”

Illinois has made historic investments in early childhood services, increasing appropriations for the Early Childhood Block Grant, which serves children from birth to age 5, by $50 million for a total of $543.7 million in FY 2020.

“Early childhood education is the foundation for our children’s future, and these outstanding early learning providers are the gold standard,” said Governor JB Pritzker.

County accepting water quality grant applications

The DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee voted Tuesday to begin accepting grant proposals for projects aimed at improving the quality of the County’s waterbodies.

In its 21st year, the Water Quality Improvement Program (WQIP) grant awards funding for projects exhibiting a regional water quality benefit, including restoration and green infrastructure projects.

native vegetation, with approximately $300,000 awarded annually.

“These types of projects have so many co-benefits, from reducing localized flooding and improving ecosystems to enhancing the aesthetics of our local communities,” Zay added.

Cantigny hosts annual photo contest Deadline is Nov. 18

Cantigny Park invites amateur photographers to enter their best images in the Cantigny in Focus annual photo contest. The submission deadline for entries is Monday, Nov. 18.

Submitted images (maximum 10) must be from the grounds of Canti-

gny Park or Cantigny Golf in Wheaton, the 500-acre former estate of Robert R. McCormick. Pictures taken in 2019 or earlier are eligible.

Cantigny-appointed judges will select 20 images for public display in the park’s Visitors Center Gallery. Judges look for photographs that best represent the scope of Cantigny, including gardens, museums, special events, festivals, golf, adult and children’s programs, concerts,

military events and nature.

The entries chosen for display will be enlarged, professionally framed at Cantigny’s expense and returned to the photographers at the end of 2020. Top finishers also receive a free annual membership to Cantigny Park.

Winning entries will be on display starting this February. Park visitors may then vote for their favorite images throughout 2020. Owners of the

top three vote getters receive prizes.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved the state’s request for assistance to help residents whose homes and businesses suffered storm damage on June 26 when severe thunderstorms hit the region.

The approved SBA disaster declaration makes low-interest loans available to homeowners, renters and businesses. SBA loans can help repair or

replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters can apply for loans to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

Businesses and private non-profit organizations can apply for loans to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets.

The filing deadline to return appli-

cations for physical property damage is Nov. 25. The deadline to return economic injury applications is June 26, 2020.

Shooting incident takes place in parking lot of Elmhurst Hospital

On Wednesday, Oct. 2 at about 8:30 p.m., the Independent learned that police had been summoned to the parking lot of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital on the report of an alleged shooting incident.

Hospital officials notified police at about 7 p.m. that there was a man who reportedly had a gun in the parking lot.

It was confirmed later in the evening that the man’s daughter had run into the Emergency Room at Elmhurst Hospital, shouting that her father had shot her.

While she was being treated inside, the man reportedly returned to his vehicle and shot himself.

The male was identified as 73-year-

old Robert Shek, who resided in the 300 block of South Rex in Elmhurst.

The female was 44-year-old Imelda Shek, who has been transported to Loyola Hospital and is undergoing treatment. Police arrived at the scene within minutes and found Shek in the west parking lot in a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was brought into the emergency room by Elmhurst Fire Department Paramedics for treatment and died a short time later.

The woman initially told police that her father had shot her and then shot himself in the hospital parking lot.

During the course of the response, the hospital was briefly placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of the patients and staff. The incident was contained to the parking lot of the hospital and the lockdown was quickly lifted and routine operations resumed.

This incident remains under investigation.

It should be noted that some reports indicated the woman was the man’s daughter, while others said it was his stepdaughter. This could not be confirmed at press time.

Hospital official explains as details emerge According to hospital spokesman Keith Hartenberger, at about 7:11 p.m., hospital officials had been notified that a man had shot his daughter in the parking lot at 155 E. Brush Hill Road.

“The father apparently allegedly shot the daughter in the face, and then somehow, she made it into the ER,” Hartenberger said. “He shot and killed himself in his vehicle.”

The hospital briefly went on lockdown Hartenberger said, but no one else was reported as injured. As of 7:45 p.m., hospital operations were returning to normal.

For a brief period during lockdown, ER patients were not allowed in or out.

Witness at the scene Alice Gorecka, a 24-year-old Wood Dale resident who was waiting in the ER with her husband, was a witness at the scene. She happened to be facing the sliding doors when the woman came running in.

“She was yelling, ’My dad shot me,’” Gorecka said.

When the hospital then went on lockdown, Gorecka and her husband were moved to a safer area of the hospital.

“It was definitely scary,” she said.

“We had to walk back to those doors [where the victim had entered]. And it was scary. What if the guy was out there? We heard the dad was still out in the parking lot. What if he ran in?”

Police said the situation was deemed “not an active shooter,” according to Hartenberger, even though early reports of the incidents came in that way.

“No other injuries have happened and nobody at the hospital is in danger,” he said.

Man gets 45 years in Bensenville stabbing death DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a Des Plaines man charged with stabbing his former girlfriend to death in 2017 has been sentenced to 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Victor Tornez-Sanchez, 29, formerly of Des Plaines, appeared at his sentencing hearing, where Judge John Kinsella handed down the sentence.

On June 18, 2017, at approximately 9:26 p.m., the Bensenville Police Department received a call regarding a stabbing victim at 713 Parkside Lane. Upon their arrival, officers found Olivia Renteria-Bravo, 32,

unresponsive and lying in a pool of blood, approximately ten feet away from the building. Renteria-Bravo appeared to have been stabbed at least three times, once in her chest, once in her right side and once in her right bicep. Renteria-Bravo was immediately transported to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital where she passed away as a result of her injuries.

An investigation into the murder led authorities to her former boyfriend, Victor Tornez-Sanchez as the murderer. The investigation found that on June 18, 2017, Tornez-Sanchez waited in a vehicle outside Renteria-Bravo’s home for her to

return from a date with her new boyfriend. After Renteria-Bravo was dropped off in front of her building, Tornez-Sanchez ran towards her, stabbed her three times, ran back to his vehicle and fled the scene.

Tornez-Sanchez was taken into custody the following day in Elgin.

He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail on bond of $2.5 million with 10% to apply. On May 24, 2019, Tornez-Sanchez entered a plea of guilty to one count of First Degree Murder.

“June 18, 2017 is a day I’m sure the family and friends of Olivia

Renteria-Bravo will never forget,” Berlin said. “That was the day Victor Tornez-Sanchez brutally stabbed to death his former girlfriend and mother of his child. While Mr. Tornez-Sanchez took responsibility for the murder, the fact remains that Olivia is gone forever because of his actions. The hole in the hearts of those who loved Olivia will never be filled but with today’s sentence of 45 years perhaps those who loved Olivia will be able to go on with their lives knowing that the man responsible for her murder will spend the next four and one-half decades behind bars.”

Viewpoint Letter to the editor Reader urges support of children in developing countries As a frequent reader of the Elmhurst Independent, I am struck by how many stories and events center around children. I am proud to be a member of a community that supports children of all ages and helps them grow and develop to be the best citizens they can be.

It is so important that each child has a solid foundation in which they can learn and advance their academic, social and emotional intelligence.

I believe this attention to children must extend beyond the boundaries of our community, state and nation.

Most people don’t know that since 1990, U.S. international aid has saved the lives of nearly 100 million children. This is an amazing accomplishment, but we need to make sure that children do more than survive; we need to help them thrive.

In developing countries, integrating Early Childhood Development (ECD) into child-focused foreign assistance only costs 50 cents per child

per year and we know it significantly improves their long-term well-being.

In fact, the benefits of ECD programming are worth six times their cost.

Activities such as reading, singing, playing with colorful objects and eating nutritious meals help stimulate young minds and start children on the right path for lifetime success.

ECD can mitigate some of the worst effects that come with children living in poverty, war-torn areas and refugee camps. Yet, our U.S. government does not integrate ECD into international programs for children.

Therefore, as your neighbor, I would like to urge readers to join me in contacting U. S. Representative Mike Quigley to co-sponsor legislation being introduced by U. S. Representatives Castro (D-TX) and Fitzpatrick (R-PA) that would bring early childhood development to children all around the world. Please take a moment to call or email Representative Quigley. Together we can help build a strong foundation for children to achieve their potential here in Elmhurst and across the globe.

Fullerton students tour Village buildings, meet two mayors Fullerton School’s 2nd graders are the first of this year’s Addison School District 4 students who will be enjoying a field trip to learn about the community in which they live.

Susan English, Addison Historical Museum Director, works with the district’s 2nd grade teachers to schedule each school’s visit to the center of town. Fullerton students began the day on Wednesday, Sept.

Art Guild meeting welcomes Jacque France

The Addison Art Guild will meet on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Addison Village Hall, One Friendship Plaza, room 1301. The guest artist for the evening is Jacqueline France, who will give an oil painting demonstration.

Jacque graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago and after graduation taught art to children for four years as an occupational therapist.

While raising her own family, she continued to paint recreationally and developed an antique business for more than 30 years. After retiring from the antique business, Jacquie became a member and oil painting teacher at the DuPage Art Leagues, Naperville Art League and LaGrange Art League.

Jacque’s urge to paint full-time blossomed in 2000 after she attended a landscape painting workshop in Tuscany. She now regularly conducts painting demonstrations, critiques and workshops for art associations in the Chicago area, as well as the Peninsula School of Art in Wisconsin and the Naples Art Association in Florida. Jacque said the French Impressionists have been the primary influence in her work, and Jacque teams up with her husband annually to paint and attend European workshops where she has extended her repertoire. Her work hangs in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Canada.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome.

Boys soccer team readies for conference showdown with Morton Blazers looking forward to matchup with state’s best

The Addison Trail boys soccer team’s fifth conference game of the season is a big one.

The Blazers head to Morton Thursday for a key West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest.

Morton is ranked No. 1 in the state, while Addison Trail has a 3-0 mark in WSC Gold play.

“We are very excited about the rest of our conference schedule and playoffs,” Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini said. “We are 3-0 in conference (through late last week) and are still in the race for the championship.

In the last three years we have taken second place twice. It would be great if we can find a way to knock off Morton at their place. We really have nothing to lose but to go out and give it our best shot.”

The Blazers were 10-3-1 overall in their first 14 games of the season.

Addison Trail lost 4-2 to York recently and recorded a 7-3 WSC Gold win against Proviso East on senior night at Addison Trail.

Statistically, junior forward Aaron Sanchez was leading the team in scoring with 14 goals and three assists. Junior forward Anthony Hernandez had seven goals and three assists, while senior midfielder Leo Acosta had six goals and 11 assists.

“Currently, we are doing a few

things really well,” said Dini. “Our team depth has allowed for us to play a lot of players. We are winning most of our second halves this season with our conditioning. I feel we are making really good adjustments at halftime as well to mix things up against our opponents. I also like how well our juniors are starting to play in the middle of the season.

They have really adjusted to varsity speed and are gaining a lot of confidence.”

Dini added that team depth has been a difference-maker this season.

“In the beginning of the season, our new players to varsity were not adjusting well to the speed and physicality of the game,” he explained.

“We were not getting the most out of them because there were some confidence issues. Now, we are seeing players such as Angel Gomez, Jose Vega and Ray Fischer flourish and barely come off the field. This has added to us being a more dangerous team, and has allowed for us to play around a bit with lineups, depending on the challenges our opponents give us with defending and attacking.”

Addison Trail has scored 41 goals in 14 games.

“Our offense is still a work in progress,” said Dini. “Forty-one goals in 14 games is pretty good. We tend to score in bunches, so we are looking for more consistency throughout the game. Both our junior forwards are having nice seasons, but both only have three assists each. We would like to see them distribute the ball a bit more to our wings and midfielders since so many teams key on

“Our team defense has been really good all season, besides last week,” he said. “We gave up four goals to York and three to Proviso East on back-to-back days. This is unaccept-

able and we must get back to playing solid team defense. Martin Murillo did miss the York game and he is our best defender. They were able to expose us with their speed and really hurt us on finishing their opportunities.”

Goalie Ernesto Padua has allowed 16 goals in those first 14 games for a 1.14 goals-against average. He has 103 saves on 120 shots this season (86 save percentage).

Dini praised the recent play of

senior midfielder Pablo Duran and Sanchez. “Pablo has three goals in his last five games,” Dini pointed out. “He is doing a nice job of pushing the pace when we are attacking. Aaron is fast, physical and fun to watch when he is on. He is very good at finishing and has added some physicality to our team, which is needed.”

Addison Trail recently earned the No. 4 seed in the 18-team Class 3A St. Charles East sectional.

Slices of life

When life doesn’t go as planned Life has not always worked out like I planned. And here’s the thing – the more unplanned it becomes the more I learn. The more I grow – and trust. The better everything becomes.

I haven’t always embraced this concept. What can I say? I have control issues.

But the more you try to harness control, the less you have of it.

Illogical, but true – trust me.

My latest lesson involves my granddaughter. Isn’t that fitting? A newbie human teaching an older human new tricks. You’ve got to love the irony. I know I do.

It started with an unfortunate situation as many life changes do.

She started at a new daycare and had a few bad experiences in the first week, the last of them being a bump to the head.

We were devastated; our daughter and son-in-law doubly so.

And we witnessed our 16-month old granddaughter’s personality change in ways we couldn’t have previously imagined. She went from being a feisty, confident toddler to a fearful, clingy, crying, sad little girl. I saw it with my own eyes and I knew something had to give.

I never, ever (never ever) set out to be a daycare grandma. I did my time in the trenches with my own four

children, and while it was wonderful and worthwhile, I figured I was done.

Ready to be done.

But then life happened and my granddaughter needed a safe place to go during the day.

My husband and I were crushed by her situation and the way the circumstances had altered her personality.

“We can take her,” he said.

I wasn’t so sure. I work from home. I have responsibilities. I was worried about over-extending.

“We’ve got this,” he said. “If you are busy, I’ve got this.”

Over the years I’ve learned to trust his judgment.

The first day she arrived whimpering. She didn’t want to stay.

She asked for “mama” and “dada” repeatedly. After about half an hour she calmed down.

By the third day the whimpering was gone. We had to distract her while mom left for work.

On the eighth day she waved to

mommy and said “bye bye.”

Within two weeks we’ve watched her go from fearful to fearless. And that, as they say, is priceless.

She’s grown to love each of her three uncles and says two of their names clearly. The other she plays a pointing game with. She calls my husband “papa” and worries when he leaves the room: “Papa?” She doesn’t have a name for me – yet, but that’s not a concern. She is silly. Her personality has returned. Her love is palpable. As is the effect she’s had on the household.

So there you have it. My husband and I never would have become daycare grandparents by choice, but it was something that was meant to be. I believe that now.

Our house is alive again. Alive and messy and loud with giggles and squeals of contentment and a dollop or two of scrambled eggs on the floor. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Even if not by choice. Because that’s life; and life can be wonderful if you let it be.

State Board of Education scheduling budget hearings in four cities

The Illinois State Board of Education has scheduled four hearings in different parts of the state to gather input in the coming weeks for its budget request that will be sent to the governor and General Assembly in January.

In a news release announcing the hearings, Illinois Education Superintendent Carmen Ayala touted the state’s evidence-based funding formula, which was passed in August 2017.

“Illinois has made historic investments in Evidence-Based Funding and early childhood education that have transformed entire communities,” Ayala said in a statement. “The voices of educators and community partners must be front and center as we advocate for the adequate and equitable resources our students need to continue to grow.”

That formula separates school districts into four tiers based on how far they are from adequate funding. Each district receives an adequacy target

determined by a number of factors impacting student performance, such as class size, number of low-income students, English language learners and students with special education needs.

Any new funding added to the formula each year is directed first to Tier 1 schools, which are the districts that are furthest from adequacy. Per the formula, no district can receive a lesser base funding formula than they did the year before.

The formula’s goal is to bring all school districts up to a point of 90 percent adequacy by 2027, but that would require an estimated additional $4.83 billion over that span, or $660 million annually, according to ISBE. The legislation that initiated the evidence-based formula calls for $350 million in increased state funding to the formula every year. In the fiscal year 2020 budget, passed in June, the General Assembly dedicated an added $375 million to the formula.

For the first year of the formula, the new funding represented about 4

percent of the state’s total $6.836 billion investment in the formula, and 89 percent of the new funding went to Tier 1 schools.

At its June meeting, ISBE shared data showing there were 307 school districts in Tier 1, 348 in Tier 2, which received 10 percent of new funding, 58 in Tier 3 and 140 in Tier 4.

That data also revealed the average percentage of adequacy for Tier 1 districts grew from 59.2 percent to 61.5 percent in the first year of the formula. That percentage shrunk from 74.4 percent to 74.2 percent in Tier 2, while Tier 3 moved from 94.8 percent to 95 percent and Tier 4 shrunk from 130.1 percent to 128.7 percent.

The upcoming hearings will be facilitated by ISBE Finance and Audit Committee Chair Jane Quinlan.

The hearings will take place from mid-October through November at various locations throughout the state—including from 1-4 p.m.

Warriors pound Hornets 35-0 to close in on another conference title Team posts its first shutout of the season

The Willowbrook football team routed Hinsdale South 35-0 on Friday night in Darien to improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the West Suburban Gold Conference.

The Warriors, who have won five straight games, will face York (3-3) of the West Suburban Silver Conference this Friday in Villa Park. A victory over York will seal a 2019 post-season berth for the Warriors, who have advanced to the state quarterfinals of the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

Willowbrook jumped to a 21-0 first-quarter lead over Hinsdale South (3-3 overall, 2-1 in the conference). The Warriors added one more touchdown in the second quarter to build a 28-0 halftime lead. They added their final touchdown in the third quarter.

Willowbrook built 42-0 halftime leads in its two previous games— conference victories over Leyden on Sept. 20 and Addison Trail on Sept.

Senior quarterback Sam Tumilty threw three touchdown passes and added one touchdown run for the Warriors. Tumilty ran 72 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Senior Deandre Holliday made a pair of touchdown receptions for the Warriors. He also provided an interception on defense.

Senior Alessio Battaglia hauled in a touchdown reception of nearly 40 yards. Sophomore Jaylon White scored the Warriors’ final touchdown of the game on a second-half run.

“I thought our guys had a really good week of practice,” stated Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth after the victory. “We left some points out there. We have to be more efficient and execute better. We also need to minimize the big plays on defense.”

After playing York this week, the Warriors will complete the regular season with conference games against Morton and Proviso East.

Willowbrook posted perfect 6-0 conference records in 2017 and 2018.

Improved Willowbrook girls volleyball team looks to make late-season push

When the grind of a high school sports season gets into full swing, having a full week of practice and no games becomes a rarity.

But that’s exactly what the Willowbrook girls volleyball team encountered last week, which was music to coach Irene Mason’s ears.

“It was good,” she said. “The girls got to work on some things that we need to adjust. We got a lot of reps in on things we need to improve on, which is nice. We also got some girls some rest. It’s a long season and their bodies are kind of tired.”

Recently, Willowbrook defeated Streamwood in a non-conference match, lost to Downers Grove South in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division matchup and dropped a non-conference match to Montini.

The Warriors were 13-7 overall and 1-2 in WSC Gold play through late last week.

Mason continues to see improvement on multiple levels. “Our serving is still great. It’s been really strong,” she said. “Our defense is always impressive. We’re still working hard on that.”

On the offensive side, Mason noted Willowbrook has taken a step forward in the variety department.

“We’re finding different ways to score the ball,” she said. “We struggled early on and now we have a few hitters who have improved on ball control enough to where they can consistently find openings on the court and intentionally put the ball in places. We work on it a lot. They are finding openings, being flexible and adjusting their swings. Our hitters have improved overall.”

Mason loves the intensity she sees from her group.

“I love the hustle on the court,” she said. “They work hard and go for everything, whether it’s in practices or in games. It’s who we are and what we do. They are not going to let balls drop without the effort of someone going for it. We have a lot of kids who play with a lot of heart, which is important in a quick game like volleyball where there are all kinds of momentum shifts.”

Mason has seen widespread key contributions of late from the likes of Payton Ceh, Katie Linnig and Stephanie Dasbach.

“The last two matches, Payton’s

energy has been really high. She plays consistent,” Mason said. “Katie, our setter, has been playing great defense in our last three matches and Steph Dasbach has been blocking well consistently. That’s been a big help for us in the middle.”

Grace Reckamp and Natalie Cipriano also have excelled of late. “Grace continues to be a leader, very consistently and very strong,” said Mason.

“In our win against Streamwood and the Downer South and Montini matches, she stood out in all of those.

Natalie is only a freshman. She had a great night against Streamwood with like 10 kills. She looked confident.

She’s feeling more comfortable out there and is getting more confident.”

Willowbrook played Glenbard East and Hinsdale South earlier this week and will head to the Elk Grove tournament on Saturday.

“One reason we’re glad we are getting this Glenbard East match in is because they are in our sectional,” Mason explained. “If we can get a win against them, hopefully that will help us where we end up going in regionals.”

Overall, Mason has plenty to be pleased about with her group.

“Absolutely, I’m happy,” she said.

“We lost eight seniors from last year and then lost a starter to injury before the first match. That’s nine players in key roles. The focus was on who was going to step up and how we as a

team and a program can step up and see what are expectations are and perform like we can perform. Seeing that now, people are getting confident and more comfortable in their roles.”

Fenton boys golf team places two on all-conference list Bison boys soccer team to play in Pepsico championship Sunday

The Fenton boys golf team completed its first year in the Upstate Eight Conference by finishing sixth at the recent conference meet.

Individually, the Bison had two golfers earn all-conference honors.

Junior Patrick Block finished 13th and was named all-UEC, while sophomore Andrew Hoffing was 20th and also picked up all-conference accolades.

Fenton finished the UEC regular season with a 4-5 dual-meet mark.

Coach Rick Johnson also lauded

the efforts of freshman Taylor Siekierski. “Taylor has played well this year,” he said. “I am looking forward to next year with this very young team.”

Fenton played in the Class 2A Montini regional earlier this week at Village Links in Glen Ellyn where berths in this coming Monday’s Class 2A Hinsdale South sectional at Prairie Bluff in Lockport were on the line.

Outlook: This annual neighborhood battle has some significant meaning this year. Visiting York, which is much improved under second-year coach Mike Fitzgerald, needs to get to five wins to become state playoff eligible (with favorable matchups with Oak ParkRiver Forest at home and Proviso West on the road to close out the regular season). They have three shots at getting two wins the rest of the way here. Willowbrook can punch another state playoff ticket with a victory at home Friday and then will turn its attention to shoring up another West Suburban Conference Gold Division title. The Warriors knocked off the other WSC Gold unbeaten in impressive fashion on the road last week in Darien. Willowbrook finishes up with winless Morton and an improved Proviso East team that heads into Week 7 with a 4-2 record, needing to win only once in its final three games to become playoff eligible (winless Proviso West is one of those three games). Proviso East has only made the playoffs twice in school history, the last coming in 2008.

Outlook: Fenton has fallen on hard times after starting the year 2-0.

The Bison still have a shot at becoming playoff eligible, but would have to win their final three contests to do so. That final regular season stretch includes Friday’s game at home against Elgin High and then road contests with East Aurora (2-4) and unbeaten South Elgin (6-0).

Elgin’s only other win was against winless West Chicago (57-12).

Fenton beat West Chicago 51-13.

Leyden (1-5, 1-2) at Addison Trail (0-6, 0-3) When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Addison Trail High School, Addison Last week: Lyons Township 34, Leyden 7; Downers South 42, Addison Trail 0 Last year: Leyden 21, Addison Trail 7

Outlook: The Blazers hope to get into the win column for the first time this season against a Leyden team that has had its own share of struggles. Leyden’s only win came against 0-6 Morton. Addison Trail has scored 47 points this season and given up 276, while Leyden has scored 74 points and surrendered 176. Addison Trail wraps up 2019 with games at Hinsdale South in Week 8 and welcomes Morton to town to close it out in Week 9.

Ruiz noted he’s been impressed with the amount of players who have been involved on the offensive end this season. “We’re scoring goals from different players,” he said.

Ruiz added Fenton’s defensive unit has been working well together, while Victor Carmona has asserted himself in goal. “Victor Carmona has taken over the net,” said Ruiz.

Sam Elizondo led Fenton with a 31st place finish in 17:17 for three miles. Jimmy Palumbo was 69th with a time of 18:24. Matt Sisto was 96th with a time of 19:24. Juan Sosa finished 106th with a time of 19:51, while Chris Kovich was 112th with a time of 20:39. Roman Gomez was 116th with a time of 22:10 and Jacek Lula took 119th with a time of 22:38.

The Willowbrook boys golf team finished third at the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division tournament held at Prairie Bluff in Lockport. Contestants played from the blue tees on the par-72 layout.

Willowbrook finished with a 354 team score.

Senior Utah Keehner shot 85 and earned all-WSC Gold honors. Senior Logan Rattana carded an 89 for 18 holes, as did freshman Brett Vandergrift. Junior Andrew Rugg was Willowbrook’s final counting score. He shot 91.

The Warriors played in a Class 3A regional earlier this week at Carriage Greens in Darien where berths in the coming Monday’s Class 3A Glenbard West sectional at Village Links in Glen Ellyn were on the line.

Willowbrook girls golf The Willowbrook girls golf team finished seventh at the recent West Suburban Conference meet. Sophomore Emma Rattana led the way with a 99. Alexis Masseo shot 102, while junior Petyon Mitrick shot 111 and Mickey Martens shot 111.

“Conditions were less than ideal,” noted Willowbrook coach Jim White of the tournament, which was played in the rain at Broken Arrow in Lockport.

Willowbrook finished the regular season 5-7 overall and went 3-6 in WSC duals. The Warriors closed out the regular season with a 198-234 win against Addison Trail and a 169184 win against Riverside-Brookfield.

“We are starting to be more consistent with the scores from the top golfers,” White said. “We are seeing lower scores and better course management.”

White said Rattana, a state qualifier as a freshman, has been consistent “and has high expectations every time she plays,” he said.

White added Mitrick is improving her score every match, “and having more fun and less stress.”

White said the most impressive thing he’s seen from his team this season has been its approach to the game “with respect and determination to be better as individuals and as a team,” he said.

Willowbrook cross country The Willowbrook boys cross country team is gearing up for the upcoming West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet at O’Brien Park, hosted by Downers Grove South.

“Downers South is favored to win, but there will be close races for second and third between Leyden, Morton and I think us, but Hinsdale South will be contending, too,” said Willowbrook coach T.J. Artman.

“Our boys are training hard and getting excited for the race. We’ll have one senior in the starting lineup and

The boys team competed in Saturday’s Pat Savage Invitational at Niles West High School in Skokie. The Warriors ran to an 11th-place finish in the 24-team White Division.

Junior Tyler King of Willowbrook finished the event’s 3-mile race in a 25th-place time of 16 minutes, 37.42

seconds. Senior Brandon Heselton (17:07.35) finished 48th, while Juniors Ben Cunneen (17:49.01) and Thomas Florey (18:03.76) placed 90th and 109th, respectively. Sophomore Damian Rocha (18:13.57) placed 122nd.

Two members of Willowbrook’s girls team competed in the event’s White Division girls race. Junior Melissa Martinez ran to an 11th-place finish. She completed the 3-mile race in 20 minutes, 9.15 seconds. Senior Madeleine Wilkie (20:25.39) posted a 16th-place finish.

Jackson wins the Cross-Town Classic

The soccer teams from Jackson Middle School and Jefferson Middle School squared off in last week’s District 45 Cross-Town Classic on the stadium field at Willowbrook High School. Jackson earned a 1-0 victory in the Oct. 3 match, which featured a pair of 30-minute halves. Jackson’s Dini Sadiku scored the Jaguars’ goal off of a corner kick with about six minutes left in the first half. Jackson has now won the last two Cross-Town Classics.
