District 88 students encouraged to participate; Essays due by Feb. 17

Students at Willobrook and Addison Trail high schools still have time to nominate their favorite instructors for the Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher” contest.

According to Barnes & Noble’s website, (www.barnesandnoble. com/h/my-favorite-teacher), the contest is an opportunity for “students (to) write an essay, poem or thankyou letter sharing how a teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire (that teacher).”

The competition is open to middle school and high school students, and the deadline to participate is Feb. 17. Each entry must include an entry form, and a parent/guardian must sign that form to acknowledge he or she has read the Official Contest Rules. Submissions must be e-mailed to District 88 Director of Community Relations Dani Brink at dbrink@ dupage88.net, or mailed to/dropped off at the District 88 Office (2 Friendship Plaza Addison, IL 60101).

District 88 high schoolers attend Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Breakfast On Jan. 17, Addison Trail and Willowbrook students attended the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Breakfast at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Participants heard from featured keynote speaker Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry. She is the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University, the Executive Director

of the Pro Humanitate Institute and the Founding Director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center. She also is Editor-in-Large at ELLE.com. Harris-Perry spoke about the electoral process and encouraged young women to take an active role in politics and other leadership positions. She also discussed the narratives and stories told to the public and helped students begin to think critically about the information they receive. Guests also were entertained by the university’s Unity in Christ Gospel Choir.

Twenty Addison Trail students participated in the event, and those students are part of the school’s Black

Student Union and the Youth Equity Stewardship Series (YESS!) training taking place in District 88 to improve cultural competency. That program is being led by Benjie Howard and Wade Colwell-Sandoval from the New Wilderness Project and is from their Youth Voice Leadership Series.

Thirty-three Willowbrook students participated, and they are part of the school’s Black Organization for Student Success (B.O.S.S.) and Talented African American Leaders Embarking on Their Educational Dreams (T.A.L.E.N.T.E.D.) groups.

All students were invited to attend the event.

Elmhurst College art faculty to exhibit work in a variety of media Members of the Elmhurst College Department of Art will display their distinctive artistic visions during Multiple Visions II, the College’s Art Faculty Exhibition, beginning on January 30.

“This exhibit highlights 12 artists, 12 voices, each showing a group of recent work, and each expressing a very individual concept and style in their work,” said Suellen Rocca, Elmhurst College’s curator and director of exhibitions.

The faculty artists include Dustan Creech, Danielle Dobies ’12, Eric Fuentes, Lynn Hill, Joshua Johnson, Brad Kisner, John Nester, Richard Paulsen, Curtis Readel, Suellen Rocca, Morgan Sims and Mary Lou Stewart.

The exhibition, which features painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, digital art and graphic design, begins on Monday, January 30, and runs through Friday,

March 17, in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center. A public reception will be held beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, in the Founders Lounge. An artists’ talk begins at 5:00 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The Elmhurst College Art Faculty Exhibition is one of about a dozen art shows that the College hosts each academic year in two campus venues.

It is with great sadness District 88 shares the news that Addison Trail alumnus Raymond Murrell (class of 2007) has passed RAYMOND away.

MURRELL Murrell was a police officer with the Bloomingdale Police Department and died from injuries he sustained from a car accident while on duty on Jan. 19. According to an NBC 5 Chicago article, Bloomingdale Police Chief Frank Giammarese said Murrell was a young officer with less than a year on the job, but he made a big impact in his tragically short career in the force.

“It is always difficult when we lose a member of our Addison Trail family,” said Addison Trail Principal Michael Bolden. “Our hearts and thoughts are with Murrell’s family and friends, and he will always be a Blazer.”

Addison Trail Counselor Tina Gatses said she’ll always remember Murrell’s smile, caring nature and kind personality.

“I vividly remember Raymond sitting in my office talking about life,” Gatses said. “He was quiet, but he had a strong presence. You just knew he cared about everyone and everything he did. I will never forget that sweet smile.”

Raja addresses 150,000 people at Chicago Women’s March

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi addressed a crowd of at least 150,000 people at the Chicago Women’s March, urging women and all Americans to stand up and fight for their rights. After the march, Congressman Krishnamoorthi issued the following statement: “Today’s march was about people from every walk of life coming together to declare their support for the rights of women and all Americans. Women’s rights are human rights. A loud chorus of voices including mine will speak up for the rights of women and all Americans to make a better life in this country. I’m proud to be here today and to continue this fight in Congress.”

Guest composer visits Indian Trail Discusses his music with students

Darryl Johnson II, a composer based in Southern California, visited Indian Trail Junior High on Friday, Jan. 20 to work with band student.

Johnson gave each class an intimate look at the composition process, discussed the music industry, and provided tips and suggestions as these groups prepare for upcoming performances.

Each band is learning a different piece written by Johnson: “Zeros and Ones” – 6th Grade, “Bullet Train” – 7th Grade, and “Aluminum Sharks” – 8th Grade. These compositions will be featured in upcoming concert and festival performances during the Spring Semester. This event is being sponsored by the Addison Music Parents.

Addison Jan. 19 Christopher C. Krieg, 28, of Villa Park, was charged with battery near Mill and Stevens at around 2:11 a.m. Police said Krieg punched a victim and struck the victim on the head with a beer bottle.

Jan. 14 Marco A. Delgado Jr., 18, of Addison, was charged with DUI and illegal transportation of alcohol by the driver near Park and Myrick at around 2:41 a.m. Police said officers responded to a complaint of loud music coming from a parked vehicle, and Delgado Jr. was found to be DUI and illegally transporting open alcohol.

Police said Berenise Saucedo, 24, of Addison, had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for traffic violations.

Villa Park Jan. 14 James M. Connelly, 24, of Villa Park, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near Villa and Park at around 8:12 p.m.

Taking advantage of favorable interest rates, School District 88 (Addison Trail H.S. in Addison and WIllowbrook H.S. in Villa Park) has refinanced $80 million of bonds. According to District 88 Chief Financial Officer Ed Hoster, the refinancing will save taxpayers about $10.6 million in repayment interest.

“That refinancing of $80 million of bonds (which was approved by the District 88 Board of Education on Dec. 19) will save the district and taxpayers $10.6 million throughout the remaining 10-year bond term and future tax levies.” said Hoster in a release.

The savings to taxpayers amounts to approximately $63 per property owner in 2016, based on $300,000

Viewpoint Elmhurst residents rally support for parent-teacher meetings A petition circulating in Elmhurst asks residents to stand in favor of keeping parent-teacher conferences at their local schools.

For many, it’s a stand they never thought they’d have to take.

Sandburg Middle School parents Deb Parkerson Casey and Jenn Toffler launched the petition on January 9 after learning that parent-teacher conferences, which were eliminated for the 2016-17 school year, would not be reinstated at Sandburg next year.

“We were hearing a lot of disappointment within our own networks,” said Parkerson Casey.

“We had a feeling the sentiments stretched further.”

The petition aims to gauge the level of community support for retaining parent-teacher conferences throughout District 205. More than 270 signatures have been collected, and that number continues to grow.

For now, Sandburg is the exception when it comes to conferences being eliminated.

“The concern is that what’s happening at Sandburg could have implications for how conferences are handled across the district,” said Toffler.

“Our hunch is that parents in District 205 value parent-teacher conferences and that they would be very unhappy if those confer-

ences were eliminated in the rest of our schools.”

This fall at Sandburg, the block of time normally set aside for parents and teachers to meet one-onone with each other was replaced with student-led presentations called “student-led conferences.”

During the student-led conference, students presented slideshows to parents that covered topics like self-evaluation and goal-setting. A teacher was in the room to help guide the presentation if needed, but did not provide any feedback about the student’s performance in class.

“The student-led conference did not offer any opportunity to have a conversation with my child’s teachers,” said Toffler. “Sure, I can contact the teachers through email, but I find it very beneficial having that initial conversation each fall that comes with traditional parent-teacher conferences.”

Toffler and Parkerson Casey believe that the District 205 community welcomes positive change and the idea of building learning-centered cultures within the schools.

However, they don’t think learner-centered cultures need to come at the cost of parent-teacher conferences.

“Change that eliminates parent-teacher conferences does not achieve growth for our students.

On the contrary, it inhibits their growth by reducing communication between the two groups of adults most invested in their future: their parents and their teachers,” said Parkerson Casey.

She says there are alternatives that don’t involve cutting conferences.

Many petition supporters are not opposed to learner-centered cultures or the idea of student-led conferences. They just don’t believe that student-led conferences are an acceptable replacement for the conversations that occur between parents and teachers at parent-teacher conferences.

“I would like to see us have student-led and traditional conferences,” said Kevin Kramer, father of children at York, Sandburg and Hawthorne. “My child’s self-evaluation is not the same as the information I get from teachers during parent-teacher conferences.

Both are valuable. I feel that a student-led conference could easily be handled at home.”

One petition signer posted this comment online, “I much prefer hearing the teacher’s viewpoint on how my child is doing and in addition discussing what my insights are to better support my child’s learning experience.”

Being a hero

Things I learned today: Some of the most unexpected actions might make you a hero. Others do not.

If you are a parent, this pretty much goes with the territory. For me, it’s been this way since the diaper years.

When you change a diaper on time, you are a hero. When you fail to smell the stinky-poo, you are less than heroic.

When you fed your newborn baby at midnight, 2:14 am, 4:12 am and 6:05 am – all within the same, blurry night/morning – you were a hero. When you cried while doing so because you were so very tired, you were still a hero, even though you didn’t realize it at the time.

A hero listens to her kids when they want to talk. A non-hero lectures her kids when they don’t want to listen. (Guilty here.)

When they were little, being a hero often meant doing without so they could have what they needed. Now that they are older, they show me their own heroism when they surprise me with things I don’t really need that they’ve bought because they can and they tell me, “You deserve it, Mom.” (And my heart gushes.)

A hero picks her son up from school, leaving a few minutes early in order to drive a circuitous route so she can park on the right side of the road so said son won’t have to walk across traffic to access the vehicle. This is heroic, even though no one but the mom knows it.

A non-hero parks in a slightly different place when picking up her son, so he doesn’t know she is there at all and thinks maybe she forgot him (which she never would do on purpose).

Proof you are a hero is when your teenage son says, “I love you,” when no one else can hear.

(You didn’t hear that from me.)

You are still a hero when he fails to yell this to you across a crowded room, or from a distance of 100 feet.

A surprisingly significant proportion of heroism begins and ends with laundry. Go figure.

and training pants, but it becomes so when your college-aged kids realize they are responsible for their own clean underwear. Sometimes they wash and dry a load but are too busy sleeping or eating or watching football to fold it. When you go to do a load of your own and find their items in the dryer you may decide to take five minutes and fold them. When you do, you are a hero.

In a related scenario, heroic behavior is stumbling upon the fact that rubbing alcohol will remove gum from your ninth grade son’s brand-new expensive name-brand shirt. It is helpful to know that rubbing alcohol is not the same as drinking alcohol. This is especially useful to moms, and specifically moms of teenagers.

Non-heroic behavior is forcing that same ninth grader to wear a jacket to school when it is 10 degrees below zero. Ditto that for long pants.

Bonus hero points given for surprising said son with a pack of his favorite candy when you pick him up from school to make up for the morning’s jacket fiasco and to prepare for tomorrow, when it’s going to be just as cold.

Double bonus points awarded for being brave enough to be a parent for another day. And another. And loving it. Most days.

Except for the jacket part. And the long pants.

And the laundry – if we are being heroically honest here.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Elmhurst Area Branch is offering a scholarship of $3,000 to a woman from the communities of Elmhurst, Addison, Bensenville, Berkeley, Northlake, Oak Brook, or Villa Park who needs financial assistance to continue her education at the undergraduate or graduate level. An applicant may be studying full or part time. Besides being from one of the above communities, the applicant must be continuing her education after completing at least 12 credit hours at an accredited college or university and be age 25 or older.

Funds for the scholarship come from the Used Book Sale that AAUW hosts each summer.

Stone school kids learning about ballet

Second grade students at Stone School are participating in a six week ‘artist in residence’ program presented by Kelly Stokes of Salt Creek Ballet. Stokes works with the students teaching ballet terms and steps, developing movements that help them understand how ballet can tell a story. Each week’s lesson is based on a story that the students read and

discuss ahead of time and Ms. Stokes comes to school dressed as a character from the story. The story for this week was The Lonely Lioness and the Ostrich Chicks.

Students will be presenting dances representing a story they read at their 2nd grade Musical/Literacy Showcase which is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Montini Catholic to host several upcoming events for prospective families

Montini Catholic is proud to announce several opportunities for prospective students and parents to explore their numerous academic, athletic and extra-curricular offerings.

In addition to hosting Open Houses in the fall, the college preparatory high school offers a more intimate setting for parents to visit, tour and ask questions at their ‘Meet Montini’ events. They are also looking forward to their upcoming 7th Grade Step-Up Day in February, and the doors are always open for 8th graders to “Be A Bronco for a Day” through their Shadow Day Program.

“Each month, from September through April we offer informal informational sessions for parents at our Meet Montini events,” explained Kim Richmond, Admissions Coordinator. “Unlike our Open Houses, these events allow our visitors a chance to tour the school while classes are in session.” The morning features a light breakfast and are held at Montini’s De la Salle Hall. Montini will host ‘Meet Montini’ events on February 16th, March 16th and April 20th (all at 8:00 a.m.).

“Every year we look forward to meeting our younger prospective students at our 7th Grade Step-Up Day,” says Richmond. “Our visitors get to experience what it’s like to be

a Montini Catholic student during our annual Turnabout Week!” Richmond went on to explain how 7th graders are paired up with a student host and are able to attend classes, meet teachers, enjoy lunch and finally, experience the energy of Bronco Pride first-hand at Montini Catholic’s Turnabout pep rally.

“This year’s 7th Grade Step-Up day will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017,” advised Richmond.

Students interesting in attending Step-Up Day are asked to download a registration form at: www.montini.org. (Forms can be found on the ‘Admissions’ section of the site.)

All 8th graders are encouraged to take advantage of Montini’s Shadow Day program, offered each year from September through April, when classes are in session. “Our Shadow Program allows 8th graders to live their day out in the halls and classrooms of Montini, meeting teachers, participating in class and just being a unique member of our school community,” said Richmond.

She also shared that Montini Catholic proudly hosts over 200 students per school year through their Shadow Day Program.

Young at Art show opens at ACA

District 4 artists have their work on display at the “Young at Art” show at the Addison Center for the Arts. An artists’ reception, held on Wednesday, Jan 18, brought a large crowd of students, staff, families, and community members to enjoy the display of visual arts as well as musical entertainment by the Indian Trail Jazz Ensemble. Addison Trail girls basketball team defeats Hoffman Estates

Blazers recently completed tough stretch of games

The Addison Trail girls basketball team hit double digits in wins with a recent 29-24 non-conference win against Hoffman Estates.

The win put the Blazers, who led 16-11 at halftime, at 10-9 overall.

In earlier action, the Blazers dropped a 51-42 non-conference game to Streamwood.

“We were down a couple kids against Streamwood,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Schader. “We were winning the whole game and then with about six-and-a-half minutes left we

Longtime Fenton girls basketball coach Tim Anderson warned of a certain portion of the team’s 2016-2017 schedule that lurked ahead.

“I had mentioned we were about to come upon the toughest stretch of the season,” he said. “It was those four games we played after Christmas. My goodness. They were extremely challenging. Glenbard South and Kaneland are the two best teams we’ve seen this season. Walther Christian and Illiana Christian are good as well.

Illiana has a player who is the best guard we’ve seen this season.”

Fenton lost all four games, but Anderson was not deterred by what he saw from his team. “I might start sounding like a broken record, but I’m proud of the girls,” he said. “They are getting better. Glenbard South’s defense is the best we’ve seen in a long time. There was nothing there for us. Even so, we played at our tempo. Kaneland came into the gym and shot 62 percent. We shot 40 percent.

That was our best shooting night of the season at that point. Walther was the one game where we didn’t play at our tempo. They got us to play at their tempo and we didn’t play as well as we could have played.”

Anderson was curious to see how his team would perform the second time around in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play. Illiana was the first team the Bison saw for a second time this season.

“I was excited to see how we would do compared to the first game,” he said.

“The second time around was a much better performance than when

we were at their place. They have a terrific guard who put on a show against us and scored 25 points. What we’re trying to do is continue to get better and that’s what we are doing.

It’s what I keep preaching and selling and they are buying. We are working hard and the attitudes are great.

I can’t ask for anything more from them. We knew that would be a tough stretch of games.”

Fenton had conference games against Wheaton Academy and Riverside-Brookfield scheduled this week.

“It doesn’t get any easier,” said Anderson. “But our girls are up for the challenge. They are something special. As long as they are working hard and have great attitudes, we are going to keep moving forward. Our goal is to be competitive in every game as much as we can. You can’t ask for anything more.”

Amari Benbow and Ashley Lira continue to lead the way for the Bison.

“Both of them made the all-tournament team at Christmas,” said Anderson. “They have gotten better and all the girls on the team are improving. That’s what is supposed to be happening. It’s just a matter of if we are going to get better at a faster rate than our opponents. My job is to make sure we are improving individually and collectively as a team every day. They are doing that. If our record was flipped the other way, you’d still want the same thing.”

Anderson expressed in strong terms how far the team has come.

“I can’t believe it’s the same team as we had five weeks ago,” he said.

“They see it now and they are getting a lot of power out of getting better.

If you were to graph our progress in a line graph the last five weeks, it’s moving up. We’re all improving and I’m happy with how hard they are working. We’re excited to see these teams the second time around in conference.”

“Streamwood has a 6-2 girl and Diamond played against her well. It was an excellent effort.”

In other recent action, Addison Trail defeated West Chicago 48-40 in another non-conference game.

“We played very well against West Chicago,” said Schader. “We played very hard and things worked out.”

Schader was pleased with the team’s defense in the win against Hoffman Estates. “We had Jazmin Mehmeti back in that game and she had a couple

big rebounds down the stretch for us.

Alyssa Pham played well. She rolled her ankle and gutted it out. We held Hoffman Estates scoreless in the third quarter. We played well enough to win that game. We were exhausted. We had been short-handed for a couple weeks.

It was nice to get that win. It was 1716 at the end of the third and then we scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.

We had an offensive explosion.”

Schader continues to be impressed with Pikulyk’s play of late. “She’s been great,” the coach said. “It’s getting to the point now where teams are putting two and three girls on her.

She’s averaging 11.1 points and 9.1 rebounds a game.”

Also playing well in recent times are the likes of Pham, Nicci Scorza, Marie Baumgartner and Diana Graciano.

“Diana wasn’t going to play for us this year, but she came back,” said Schader. “Thank goodness. She’s done a great job for us the last few weeks starting for us.”

Schader likes where the team is sitting at right now.

“We’re 10-9 and have seven games in the regular season left,” he said.

“We feel like there were at least two games there we could have had a different outcome. The kids are getting better. We have a chance here to finish strong.”

Willowbrook girls basketball team making strides Warriors playing a variety of underclassmen this season

There is a youth movement in full swing with the Willowbrook girls basketball team.

Warriors’ coach Terry Harrell noted the team plays four sophomores, two juniors and two freshmen.

“Almost everybody on the team is going to be back next year,” said Harrell. “Our record might not be the greatest, but in terms of defense we are doing a good job and getting better. We are a young team, but we are getting better.”

Willowbrook was 5-12 overall through its first 17 games.

“We are giving up an average of 48 points per game,” said Harrell. “The problem is we are only scoring 35 points a game.”

The Warriors have been playing without 15-pointper-game scorer Kelssie Kraabel, who has been out with an injury.

“We’ve made some adjustments,” said Harrell.

“There is nobody at that same consistency level to replace her, but we’ve had people step up on different occasions. Our defense has gotten a lot better. We lost to Lemont, but gave up only 43 points. Lemont was averaging about 60 points a game and we lost 43-30. We played well against Lemont defensively and did a good job on the boards even though we are undersized. We took them out of a lot of things they wanted to do. We didn’t score enough buckets, but defensively we’ve done quite well.”

CeCe Lizasuain has been one of numerous bright spots for Willowbrook. She’s averaging about eight points and eight rebounds per game.

“She’s been an impact player inside for us,” said Harrell. “She’s a sophomore and she’s getting better every day. We’re looking for her to step up even more and play an even bigger role.”

Katelyn McCann has been strong with her

shooting. “She’s shooting very well,” said Harrell.

“Katelyn had 12 points against Lemont. She’s one of our 3-point specialists. She’s shot the ball well the last few games.”

Freshmen Shannon Knudston and Sara Fitzgibbon also have been contributing. “Shannon and Sara have both logged some serious minutes for us,” said Harrell. “We’re a young team, but those youngsters are out there competing. We’ve had some kids step up big for us.”

On the defensive front, Jayla Smith has been a spark for the Warriors. “She’s probably our best defender,” said Harrell. “She’s not the biggest guard in the world, but she has long arms. In a four-game stretch she was averaging three steals a game.”

Harrell likes the progress the team has made and is looking for even more. “The girls are getting better,” he said. “The future is bright. We just have to keep plugging away. These girls were used to winning games at the youth and club basketball levels and then they come to high school and someone grabs you and says you are on the varsity. The girls are adjusting. I feel very good about the future here.”

In the loss to Lemont, McCann led the Warriors with 12 points. Hannah Konrath added eight points, while Lizasuain had four points. Maureen Schmid finished with five rebounds. Knudtson had three assists. Konrath and Knudston each made two 3-pointers.

Willowbrook led 11-10 after the first quarter and trailed 20-15 at halftime. Lemont outscored Willowbrook 12-6 in the third quarter and 11-9 in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors also dropped a 52-47 West Suburban Conference Gold Division game to Morton.

Morton led 9-5 after the first quarter and 26-14 at halftime. Morton outscored Willowbrook 17-9 in the third quarter, but the Warriors held a 24-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.

McCann led the Warriors with 13 points. Knudtson added 10 points, while Lizasuain had eight points and five rebounds. McCann had four rebounds.

Ames bowled a 1,243 series and earned one of the individual state-qualifying positions at the recent Glenbard East sectional held at Brunswick Zone in Glendale Heights.

Ames will compete in the state finals tournament this weekend at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon, Ill. Ames advanced to the sectional after bowling a 1,239 series at the IC Catholic Prep regional held at the same Brunswick Zone house.

Fenton as a team finished in eighth place in the sectional with a 4,846 score.

Willowbrook girls basketball The Willowbrook girls basketball team was a 28-25 winner over Leyden in recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

Leyden led 8-4 after the first quarter and 14-13 at halftime. Leyden outscored Willowbrook 7-4 in the third quarter, but Willowbrook roared back in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

CeCe Lizasuain led the Warriors with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Katelyn McCann added five points, as did Hannah Konrath. Shannon Knudtson finished with four points. McCann also had seven rebounds. Maureen Schmid had two steals.

Willowbrook outrebounded Leyden 39-24 and held an 11-2 advantage on second-chance points.

Willowbrook girls bowling team wins Hinsdale South invitational

The Willowbrook girls bowling team recently won the Hinsdale South invitational.

The Warriors also placed seventh at the Fenton invitational at Wood Dale Bowl.

At Hinsdale South, the Warriors had five girls place in the Top 20 of the tournament. Dana Sasenick was second, while Jordan Tiberi was fourth. Holly Helsper placed eighth, while Katie Pettinger was 14th and

Elizabeth Soriano was 18th.

Sasenick through early last week had the team’s high average in the West Suburban Conference with a 195.

Sasenick also owns the team’s high game of the year with a 269 and the team high series with a 646.

Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen also lauded the contributions of Helsper and Soriano. “Holly and Elizabeth have really stepped up recently and are starting to stand out for us,” he said.

Willowbrook girls gymnastics team defeats Glenbard South Warriors continue to make improvements heading toward conference meet

The Willowbrook girls gymnastics team split a pair of recent dual meets with Glenbard South and Addison Trail.

The Warriors scored a 122.8 at the varsity level to defeat Glenbard South. Willowbrook lost a West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet to Addison Trail, posting a 112.3 score. Willowbrook’s junor-varsity team won both meets against Glenbard South and Addison Trail.

“The team has learned to push each other,” said Willowbrook coach Deanna Zuchowski. “While gymnastics is an individual sport, each of the girls on the team has assisted

each other in learning new tricks. We have upped our bonus value and have continued to push hard for stuck routines.

Zuchowski thanked former Willowbrook head coach Andy Isaacson for his assistance this season. “We all have grown this season,” she said.

“Being my first year, it has been helpful having Andy show me the ropes of high-school gymnastics. We have been able to take a struggling team and change the way they look at gymnastics and being on a team. We push the importance of working as a team and doing all you can do to help your team. It has been a great year for all of us.”

Zuchowski noted the Warriors are strongest currently on beam and floor.

“Beam usually is not a strong suit for teams, but our team has made it a point to start more difficult tricks that many girls are afraid of,” she said.

“They also are understanding the

importance of staying on and hitting a beam routine and how it makes or breaks a meet.”

Zuchowski had high praise for the likes of Savannah Catalano, Autumn Palacios and Melanie Hudson. “Savannah has made it a point to be our team captain,” she said. “As a senior, she has assisted in teaching the underclassmen how to become a team.

She starts and ends each practice and also makes sure the girls always are working and making sure they are progressing. Autumn has pushed herself to new limits, trying more and more difficult tricks on each event.

She also has assisted in perfecting floor routines. Melanie has shown strength and perseverance being one of our top competitors at the varsity level.”

At the JV level, Caitlyn Owen took first in the all-around scoring against Glenbard South and also was first against Addison Trail. Palacios was third against Glenbard South in the all-around and second against Addison Trail. “Caitlyn and Autumn have been assisting our JV1 team to their wins in each of the meets, helping keep the JV team second in conference,” said Zuchowski.

Willowbrook competed against Downers Grove South earlier this week and will be in the WSC Gold meet on Saturday.

“If this team wants something, they show their ability to try to capture it,” said Zuchowski. “They have more determination now than at the beginning of the season and have bonded well at all the levels. I am very proud of how these girls have grown. Individually, each has better and more difficult tricks than when we started.

Within the team, they have learned how to motivate each other and help each of their teammates.”

Stamps required for non-motorized boats

Boaters with canoes, kayaks, rowboats and paddleboats can buy Illinois water usage stamps through the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Visitor Services office at 3S580 Naperville Road in Wheaton weekdays 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources requires water usage stamps on all non-motorized watercraft on Illinois waterways.

Stamps are $6.50 for the first three vessels and are good until Dec. 31, 2017. Boaters must affix the stamps to watercraft so IDNR conservation officers and Forest Preserve District police officers and rangers can easily see them.

“We’re just chugging along right now,” said Perkins. “We’re definitely thrilled right now. I told the kids I knew we were going to be good, but if someone asked me that after 17 games we’d be 16-1, I probably would have said no. That being said, the guys are meeting the challenge.
