Harmon named 39th president of Illinois Senate States future priorities: preschool for all, reduced taxes on lower income families

Late Sunday evening, Don Harmon, a Democrat from Oak Park, was elected President of the Illinois Senate, replacing John Cullerton.

Democratic state senators went into a private caucus shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, to discuss their choices for the next Illinois Senate president.

According to the Springfield Journal, access to the third-floor offices at the Capitol was blocked off to the public and the news media while the private caucus was taking place in the Senate president’s office. Offices with access to stairwells leading to the third floor were locked as well.

A special session for the formal election on the Senate floor for the new president was scheduled for 12 noon, but the private caucus lasted much longer than the one hour allotted. With 40 Democrats and 19 Republicans in the Senate chamber, a combination of votes from 30 of those senators was needed to elect the president.

Normally, the majority party decides its candidate for president in the private caucus and records a unified, unanimous vote from its party for the president on the Senate floor.

The leading candidates were Harmon and Kimberly Lightford, a Democrat from Maywood, although another candidate could have emerged had neither Harmon nor Lightford received the necessary backing from the caucus.

Once on the floor of the Senate however, it was Senator Lightford who rose to nominate Sen. Harmon for Senate president, noting said they have neighboring districts and have since 2002.

“I can’t think of anyone else who would do a wonderful job leading our caucus,” Lightford said.

Senators Omar Aquino (D-Chicago) and Laura Murphy (D-DesPlaines) rose to second the nomination.

Harmon shares Senate priorities Later, on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 19, Senate President Don Harmon held a media conference to discuss his priorities as the 39th Senate president of Illinois.

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve the General Assembly and the people of Illinois as the next Senate president,” Harmon said at the press conference.

After representing the people of Oak Park and the state of Illinois for more than 17 years, Harmon, a Democrat from Oak Park, said he looked forward to serving and thanked his colleagues for “recognizing his legislative accomplishments and for believing in his ability to lead the chamber.”

“The Senate is a collection of diverse views and diverse experiences but consistent purpose—to best represent the citizens who send us to the Capitol, to collaborate, to compromise, and to create better opportunities, better outcomes, and greater faith in the honor and integrity of our state,” Harmon said at the press conference.

Harmon was first elected to the Senate in the fall of 2002 and has since promoted a progressive agenda based on his commitment to social justice and public service. In 2011, former-Senate President John Cullerton appointed Harmon president pro tempore, offering him a major role in forming policy and moving legisla-

Legionnaire’s disease reported at DuPage retirement facility State and County health depts. investigate Carol Stream residence

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are investigating three cases of Legionnaire’s disease that have occurred since May 2019 at Windsor Park retirement community in Carol Stream.

DCHD and IDPH are working with Windsor Park officials to collect information and further investigate these cases, which will include an on-site visit by IDPH to test the fa-

cility’s water.

Windsor Park is also conducting an investigation and taking action based on its water management plan and implementing multiple control measures. This includes flushing the plumbing system.

Additionally, Windsor Park is working to provide information to potentially affected residents, employees and visitors about Legionella. Windsor Park staff are following IDPH recommendations to identify

other potential cases and to ensure appropriate testing and clinical management.

About Legionella bacteria Legionella bacteria occur naturally in the environment. Water containing Legionella can be aerosolized through cooling towers, showers, hot tubs, and decorative fountains, and can cause Legionnaire’s disease, a serious lung infection (pneumonia) when inhaled. Legionnaires’ disease is not passed from person to person.

Outbreaks are most commonly associated with buildings or structures that have complex water systems like hotels, hospitals, long-term care facilities and cruise ships. The bacteria can become a health concern when they grow and spread in human-made water systems, like hot tubs, cooling towers, hot water tanks, large plumbing systems and decorative fountains. Most healthy people do not get Legionnaires’ disease after being exposed to Legionella bacteria.

In year two, Gov. J.B. Pritzker will focus on ending cash bail, reforming low-level drug crime sentencing and reducing mandatory minimum sentences, he announced in Chicago Jan. 9.

Pritzker and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, both Democrats, laid out their plan at a news conference at Kennedy-King College. Stratton said real justice reform in Illinois will require more than just policing prisons.

“Justice reform is about striving to make equity and economic opportunity a reality for every community and every Illinoisan, because we simply cannot have justice without equity and opportunity,” Stratton said.

Stratton spearheads the Justice, Equity and Opportunity Initiative, established by a Pritzker executive order last February to study the subject. She submitted a report to the governor this month outlining goals of the Initiative.

Those include addressing social determinants of crime and incarceration; improving equitable deflection and diversion opportunities from the justice system; improving conditions and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations in correctional facilities; and supporting positive re-entry outcomes to reduce recidivism.

The Jan. 9 announcement comes as state’s attorneys throughout Illinois are initiating the process of expunging thousands of low-level stand-alone marijuana offenses in compliance with the state’s adult-

use legalization law.

“Criminal justice reform is one of the major planks of our administration, something that we talked about for two years on the campaign trail and we’ve already made strides in our first year,” Pritzker said. “Going forward, we have a lot to do with criminal justice reform.”

He said top priorities include eliminating cash bail and reducing mandatory minimum sentences, “giving judges more discretion to take into account circumstances in each case.”

“Those two things will have, I think, a significant impact on incarceration, on reducing incarceration in jails and in prison,” he said. “We have a prison population of 40,000 in this state, we can reduce that and we can do it prudently.”

Pritzker didn’t give specifics on the mandatory minimum reforms or which minimums would be changed, but said “we’re looking at all the mandatory minimums.”

“It has to do with what kinds of crimes,” he said. “The more violent the crime, obviously, the more reticent we are to look at anything like that, but that’s all going to be examined by us and we’re going to move forward with the mission of reducing our prison population.”

Pritzker said “pieces” of the legislative effort will be introduced this session, which begins in late January and is scheduled to conclude in May. Stratton said “it’s going to take some time” to reform the criminal justice system, “but we do believe that over the next three years we can make some significant movement to getting us to the end point where we

“I am excited to get to work with our new leadership team to focus on job creation and reforming our ethics laws,” Glowiak Hilton said.

“With 17 new Senators since 2018 and new leadership, now is the time to make major, lasting changes to our state’s political culture.”

Senator Glowiak Hilton plans to introduce legislation to end the “revolving door cycle” in state government, barring elected officials from becoming lobbyists for two years after they leave office.

Members of the initiative heard from several people that remained incarcerated for low-level crimes because they were unable to come up with bail, Stratton said.

Last April, members of a House committee discussed the idea of ending cash bail, which is supported by Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.

But law enforcement officials

and other prosecutors at the hearing warned such a move could have far-reaching consequences, including putting victims of domestic violence at risk and taking away the ability of local courts to fund services for crime victims.

“In our county, we take in roughly about a half million dollars in bond a year, and that money fuels our criminal justice system,” McDonough County Sheriff Nick Petitgout said at the April committee hearing.

“Things like victims services, court appointed special advocates, teen court, diversion programs, the treasurer’s office, the circuit clerk’s office, the sheriff’s office. There are many, many different parts of this system that rely on that money.”

Conroy-backed bill ensures insurance coverage for EpiPens for kids A new law sponsored by state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, will guarantee that all insured Illinois children will have access to lifesaving EpiPens.

“As a parent, I worry about my kids all the time,” said Conroy. “But no mom or dad should ever have to worry about being able to afford a device that could save their child’s life in the event of an emergency.

“That’s why I have fought to force insurance companies to put patients and children with serious medical conditions above the interest of profits.

The safety of our kids is what’s most important and commonsense legislation like this moves Illinois in the right direction.”

House Bill 3435, now in effect, requires healthcare policies in Illinois to cover epinephrine autoinjectors for pa-

tients under 18 years of age.

Epinephrine autoinjectors are a life-saving drug used to temporarily treat severe asthma or allergy attacks, often buying patients vital time to get to an emergency room. The cost of one of the most popular autoinjectors, EpiPens, increased nearly 500 percent since over the last decade at a current cost of $300 to over $600. Medications like EpiPens have a shelf life of about 18 months, requiring frequent replacements if not used.

“As food allergies become more common among our kids, Illinois law must evolve to better protect our kids’ health,” said Conroy. “Requiring health care providers to have EpiPen insurance coverage for minors is one step forward in guaranteeing affordable access to basic healthcare.”

District 88 names new head football coach at Addison Trail A new head coach will lead the Addison Trail Football Team beginning Aug. 3, but it will be a familiar face to the school and community.

At its Jan. 13th meeting, the District 88 Board of Education approved the administration’s recommendation to name Chris Bazant as the new head football coach for the Blazers. Bazant will succeed Paul Parpet Jr. in that position, who stepped down in November after 10 years at the helm and 26 years with the program. Addison Trail thanked Parpet Jr. for his years of service

and dedication to the team.

“Football builds values, and I want to develop character student-athletes who will be leaders in the classroom and on the field,” Bazant said. “It’s about building relationships. My philosophy is work hard, do things the right way and be a good person. Winning is the goal, but it’s not the focus. Success is a byproduct of following the process and implementing those other steps.”

Football has been part of Bazant’s life since he joined the sport

in sixth grade. He was a linebacker at Victor J. Andrew High School and at North Central College. He has 14 years of coaching experience in a variety of positions at York and Mattoon High Schools as well as Addison Trail, where he has served as a varsity assistant coach since 2012.

“Football is one of the most important things in my life,” he added.

“It teaches you about preparation, work ethic, teamwork and how to overcome adversity and persevere over challenges.”

AT hosts annual Young Alumni Day On Jan. 10, Addison Trail hosted its annual Young Alumni Day, when alumni from the [ast seven years are invited back to the school.

About 120 alumni attended the event, which involved touring the

school and visiting with friends and former teachers, coaches and staff members.

“Young Alumni Day is a wonderful opportunity for us to stay in touch with our recent graduates and keep them connected with

their alma mater,” said Principal Michael Bolden,. “It’s amazing to see them as young adults and hear about their successes. This event truly embodies our motto of Blazer Pride and ‘Once a Blazer, Always a Blazer.’”

At North Central College, Bazant earned his bachelor’s degree in social science/ social studies, with a minor in education. He then attended the University of St. Francis where he received his Master’s degree in teaching and learning with endorsements in ESL and psychology. He and his wife Mallory live in Lockport with their three daughters.

Having taught at AT since 2012, Bazant has worked with an array of students. He currently teaches Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level psychology and said his time in the classroom is what inspired him to become head coach of the football team.

“Addison Trail truly is a special place,” he said. “We have great kids. I believe in them, and that’s why I took this position. I’m really looking forward to working with them and getting started.”

Athletic Director Matt Thompson said he’s excited to have Bazant step into this new role.

“Bazant’s experience as a football player and as a coach, along with the relationships and level of trust he has developed with our stu-

Looks like catsup is a vegetable again!

President Donald Trump chose Michelle Obama’s birthday to announce rollbacks to her school lunch initiative to include more fruits and vegetables for student meals, which was adopted by the U. S. Department of Agriculture back then. Apparently, we’re going back to the days when catsup was considered a vegetable. Sure, and sugary-sweet cereals are high in fiber.

And martinis offer the health benefits of an olive. (Okay, that last one is mine.)

This is from a guy who reportedly eats a cheeseburger every night before bed and who doesn’t believe in exercise because it “uses up” our energy and we only have so much to last throughout our lives. Yes, exercise can actually shorten your life, according to our president.

Agricultural Secretary Sonny Perdue defended Trump’s decision saying school districts have reported there is too much food waste and that schools need more “common sense flexibility” to provide students with nutritious and appetizing meals. Well, you must admit, the kids won’t put their Flaming-hot Cheetos® in the garbage. Just those yucky green beans and apples.

And when those kids grow up and have heart disease, diabetes and whatever else, what will the state of healthcare be at that time?

There are those who don’t care for the Obamas for whatever reason, but

shouldn’t safeguarding our children’s nutritional needs be a bi-partisan effort?

Another commercial disaster There’s a rather disturbing commercial for cat food on TV. It pictures a woman sitting on her couch as her cat snuggles at her shoulder. In the distance, a little girl’s voice calls out and a dialogue begins: “Mom, I fell!”

“There are bandages in the cabinet.”

“I’m bleeding!”

“Grab two.”

(Wow, really?)

We all have a general understanding of the word old. I have an old dining room table. My house is old. No one would dispute either of these facts. They are based on age and time.

But when it comes to people, the

Last week, State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) announced her intention to file legislation that would forbid lawmakers from dipping into their campaign donations to pay legal fees they accumulate due to unethical behavior.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the latest filing with the State Board of Elections shows that House Speaker Michael Madigan spent more than $445,000 in legal fees. This figure includes a $275,000 settlement with Alaina Hampton, a former campaign worker who sued over sexual harassment.

In addition, WTTW examined campaign disclosures and found that a number of public officials in the midst of a federal probe spent significant campaign funds on legal fees during the last fiscal quarter; including $90,000 from disgraced former State Senator Martin San-

doval, $25,000 from State Senator Tom Cullerton, $200,000 from McCook Mayor and Democratic Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski, $40,000 from Chicago Alderman Carrie Austin, and $400,000 from Chicago Alderman Ed Burke.

“People donate to candidates’ campaigns to defend we the people’s rights, not to help politicians save their own necks when they abuse power,” Rep. Mazzochi said. “Letting this continue sends the wrong message: that literally, corrupt and unethical public officials don’t have to pay for their misdeeds. Spending campaign donations to bail yourself out of your personal mess is abuse, if not outright fraud.”

Rep. Mazzochi’s legislation will prohibit a political committee from making certain expenditures to provide a defense in any criminal case

or a defense in a civil case pertaining to misconduct by a person in his or her capacity as a public official, sexual harassment claims, or discrimination claims. Anyone found in violation of the law will be required to return the contributions or pay them to the state if a contributor cannot be identified or reimbursed.

Rep. Mazzochi continued, “after I was elected, and having seen how some of these people operate, I’ve spent months getting this draft in place. These recent news reports confirm we need this legislation now.”

Rep. Mazzochi intends to file the legislation next week and gather support from other legislators when spring session begins later this month.

line blurs and there are innumerable shades of gray. There are many different ways to be old, grow old, feel old, act old or be perceived as old.

There is nothing wrong with growing old. Time brings with it experiences and knowledge. The phrase “growing old” itself should be a positive term. It contains the word “grow,” which indicates a continued movement forward and upward. Growing old should lead to increased respect, dignity and glory.

Growing old should be good. But it isn’t always perceived this way.

For instance, when someone says, “I’m old,” it’s practically never a positive statement. It’s selfdeprecating. “Shucks, don’t expect too much from me now. I’m old.”

Likewise, unfortunately, people whose bodies have grown old are sometimes not given the recognition they deserve. People who have grown old have seen and experienced life moments too innumerable to mention. They have things to share that we all could benefit from knowing, but people who have grown old don’t always warrant our full attention.

We live in a culture that swoons over an everlasting quest for youth so this should come as no surprise.

However, growing old and becoming old are two different things. It’s all about semantics.

We all will grow old (hopefully).

Growing old is a state of being and should be linked with the respect

Growing old has to do with our physical body.

Becoming old is a state of mind.

You can be physically old, but still young at heart. Growing old is compulsory. Becoming old is not.

What is surprising (to me at least) is that if we fight the “O” word, as so many of us naturally do, why are there people who seem to choose to or are simply okay with becoming old before their time?

I’ve witnessed a number of instances of this in my life and while growing old is directly related to age, becoming old has no age requirement. People can become old at heart and mind at age 30 or 80 and anywhere in between.

I’ve known people with an age number that was relatively low who approached life from an old perspective. “I can’t do that anymore.” “I never learned to fillin-the-blank.” “Women my age shouldn’t wear a bikini.” “Men my

age shouldn’t have a beard because it would be gray.”

Likewise, I’ve had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of people who were born long ago but have managed to keep a youthful outlook on life. Their attitude defied their age and they were anything but old. Quite the contrary.

Growing old happens gradually over time. Becoming old is almost like turning a corner. One day a person sees themself as young, the next they make a quick claim to old.

It’s perplexing. To not long to be young at heart and mind. To see oneself by the things you can’t do, versus focusing and building upon the ones you can. To not care that life paths are no longer open to you.

To embrace the idea of old because maybe young seems too much effort.

Everyone will grow old, but becoming old is a choice – as is remaining young at heart. Sometimes, we don’t think we have the choice. We put our days on autopilot and don’t realize we are in control. But control is definitely available to each of us.

The choice is ours and ours alone.

Make one you won’t regret. Don’t let a number define you. And go ahead, buy that bikini or grown that beard. And keep it young – young at heart, no matter what number defines your “age.”

Former newspaper manager pleads guilty in theft case Jensen ordered to pay $274,000, serve probation

Cynthia R. Jensen, 56, of Kingston, Illinois, pleaded guilty to a felony theft charge in Walworth County Circuit Court on Jan. 10.

The former business manager of Rock Valley Pub- Cynthia Jensen lishing, the Villa Park Review and the Independent Newspapers, made a $250,000 restitution payment at the court hearing and pleaded guilty to a class H felony charge that carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

In a courtroom on Jan. 10, Jensen pleaded guilty to the class H felony theft charge and her attorney made a

$250,000 restitution payment on her behalf.

Circuit Court Judge Phillip Koss sentenced Jensen to make an additional $24,575.58 in restitution payments within six months and serve two years of probation on the class H felony under a plea agreement.

Several other charges she faced were dismissed, but read into the record.

Jensen was charged Sept.

25, 2018, with seven counts of identity theft for financial gain and two counts of theft in a business setting of more than $10,000, all as a party to a crime.

According to the criminal complaint, Jensen, an Illinois licensed CPA and former business manager of Rock Valley Publishing, Southern Lakes Newspapers and Southern Lakes Pub-

lishing, made unauthorized transactions from the company to herself and her husband between May 2015 and early 2018.

Company records show that Jensen transferred $871,560 in company funds into her personal accounts from May 11, 2015, until Feb. 9, 2018, without authorization.

Jensen opened a slot machine video gaming business called CJ’s Gaming in DeKalb, Illinois, close to the same time the theft started.

While employed as business manager for the publishing firm, Jensen made unauthorized ACH transfers from the company into her personal accounts and issued checks to herself and her husband without authorization by forging a signature of a company owner, according to the criminal com-

plaint. Jensen transferred funds to her personal account and made payments back to the company from CJ’s Gaming in an attempt to pay back the stolen funds.

In January of 2018, bank managers noticed checks issued to Jensen without matching signatures. An audit at the time revealed that the defendant owed the company $273,991.57 of the $871,560 in unauthorized transfers. A company demand for Jensen to immediately return the funds was unsuccessful, according to company officials.

In July 2018, the company owners filed a police report at the City of Delavan Police Department.

Equal Rights Amendment reaches support threshold; implementation likely stalled

Winter Safety Tips for Those with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia As the temperature dips into seasonal ranges for winter, those caring for someone with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia should all be on notice that snow, extreme temperatures and early darkness present special problems.

Dress Appropriately for Cold Weather A loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia will not necessarily dress appropriately for colder weather. Cover as much exposed skin as possible and provide several layers of lightweight clothing for easy movement, especially if plans include time outside.

Wearing a hat is important for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia since so much body heat escapes from an uncovered head. Also, don’t forget to add a scarf to cover up an exposed neck.

Mittens keep hands warmer than gloves and may be easier to help get on and off. Clips designed for skiers can help keep track of gloves or mittens that are otherwise easily misplaced or lost.

Manage the Winter Blues “Sundowning” is a term that refers to increased anxiety, confusion and even increased sleepiness due to the decreased sunlight in the winter months. Visual perception is already an issue for many people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia and can cause increased confusion or disorientation in dark or shadowy environments both indoors and outdoors.

Manage sundowning by turning lights on earlier, opening curtains during daylight hours or adding bulbs that simulate sunlight. Install motion detector lights to illuminate walkways around the house as darkness may fall before returning home from an outing. Dressing in bright colors or adding reflective material to clothing can help a loved one be more easily seen.

Avoid Slippery Situations A loved one living with Alzheimer’s disease or related form of de-

mentia will not necessarily dress to avoid slips and falls, so be sure boots are non-skid. There are many boot styles on the market that use Velcro instead of laces to allow the person with dementia some success with dressing themselves. Try separate “tracks” that attach to the soles for additional traction. You can also add a sharp tip to canes for extra grip on icy winter days. This device is available at home health care stores.

Assume All Surfaces are Slick Taking smaller steps and slowing down allows a loved one with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia to establish their gait and speed to a safer level.

Perception problems can make it difficult for the person with Alzheimer’s to see ice on the sidewalk or realize that ice is slippery or that snow is not a solid surface.

Keep sidewalks and driveways clear of ice and snow to make walking outside safe for everyone, but do not overuse ice melt products which can reduce traction.

Use indoor or garage parking whenever possible.

Especially on stairs or slick spots, insist on handrail use and walk armin-arm whenever possible.

Acquire and use a state issued handicapped placard enabling closer access to the door of building.

Illinois leaders react to Virginia’s vote to advance the measure

Two years after Illinois’ Legislature approved new language for the U.S. Constitution codifying that rights cannot be denied due to gender, the Equal Rights Amendment gained enough state support to be ratified.

Its potential implementation is more complicated, though.

Virginia’s General Assembly on Jan. 15 backed the addition of protections for women in the country’s governing document. After both chambers accept each other’s initiative, the commonwealth will become the 38th to ratify the amendment, pushing it across the necessary legal threshold for passage.

But opponents argue that does not matter—when the Equal Rights Amendment was introduced and passed by Congress in 1972, the body set a seven-year deadline for state ratification. It was later pushed to 1982. By then, only 35 states formally supported the language, five of which (South Dakota, Idaho, Kentucky, Nebraska and Tennessee) withdrew their backing for the measure in the 1970s.

Proponents point out the Constitution does not provide states the ability to rescind their support, or enforce a deadline for ratification. They also assert Congress’ placement of its cutoff is important.

Former Illinois state Rep. Steven Andersson, a Republican from Geneva and one of the amendment’s sponsors two years ago, said the deadline is in the resolution introducing the amendment for state consideration, not in its actual text.

The Constitution’s 27th Amendment—the last one officially passed— provides a model of why the deadline is “ministerial,” former Illinois state Rep. Lou Lang, a Skokie Democrat, said. He sponsored a bill in the House calling for Illinois’ approval of the Equal Rights Amendment for about 25 years.

The 27th Amendment provides that

Congress cannot cut or increase its salary during a term. It passed in 1992 but was first introduced in America’s first Congress more than 200 years ago.

Several states ratified it by the late 1790s before it effectively “died,” Andersson said.

In the 1990s, a college student from the University of Texas at Austin revived the effort, and the amendment was added to the country’s governing document—an “outrageous length of time” after its debut, Lang said.

Attorneys general from three states—Alabama, South Dakota and Louisiana—filed a lawsuit in December to prevent the Equal Rights Amendment from being added to the Constitution even with Virginia’s approval.

In response to the suit, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a memo that Congress’ deadline is constitutionally allowed and therefore prevents the amendment’s passage.

There are several legislative efforts to extend that limit, and the extension has the support of a number of Illinois’ congressional delegation.

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Democrat from Illinois’ 9th District, said she would work to advance the amendment at the Congressional level.

“The Equal Rights Amendment is long overdue, and I will continue to work with my colleagues and advocates to push for its enactment following ratification in Virginia. I am an original co-sponsor of H.J. Resolution 38, which currently has 218 co-sponsors, that clarifies that this amendment should take effect,” Schakowsky said in an email statement.

Andersson and Lang agree the question will go straight to federal courts to settle. Litigation is “ramping up as we speak,” Andersson said.

“The people who are opposed to this will make up anything to prove their point. They’ve tried to say it’s about gay rights—it isn’t, and the U.S. Supreme Court has already affirmed

those rights; they’ll say it’s about abortion—it has nothing to do with abortion,” Lang said. “The real question is a constitutional one.”

Illinois’ Constitution already includes an equal rights section, ensuring “the equal protection of the laws shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex by the state or its units of local governments and school districts.”

No matter what happens with the federal proposal, Andersson added, the action taken by Virginia’s General Assembly marked “a momentous, historic day.” He drove 12 hours from Chicago to the Mother of Presidents, as the commonwealth is nicknamed, to be there.

Lang said encouraging Illinois’ ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment was a “labor of love for [him] for a very long time.”

“It should never have been as hard as it was to pass,” he said. “This is an issue that is well overdue, and to treat women in America as second-class citizens in the year of 2020 would be beyond wrong—it would be immoral. In a very real way, I think Illinois kind of jump-started the process for Virginia.”

Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in a statement that he has been a lifelong advocate for women’s rights.

“I’m overjoyed to see three-fourths of the United States ratify the Equal Rights Amendment,” Pritzker said.

“These 24 words cement women’s equality into our Constitution and open a new chapter in American history where discrimination on the basis of sex is no longer tolerated. Our nation has a moral imperative to adopt this groundbreaking and common-sense statement as the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

And a spokesperson for Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who voted in support of the Equal Rights Amendment as a senator two years ago, said the office is “evaluating all options to ensure that equal rights are not contingent upon a person’s gender or sex.”

Illinois group asks U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider abortion protections

An Illinois anti-abortion advocacy group argues the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision legalizing the procedure is outdated and “out of step with modern science.”

The Thomas More Society, a Chicago-based law firm, filed a brief recently on behalf of Illinois Right to Life in the highest court’s first abortion-related case in years.

It challenges whether a Louisiana law mandating doctors who perform the procedure have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals is “unduly burdensome.” The Society’s filing is technically in support of the Louisiana law, but its focus is on the Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 ruling.

Roe v. Wade should be revisited, according to the brief, because its three major tenets are no longer applicable: pregnant women and mothers do not face “substantial social burdens” as they once did; the scientific community agrees life begins at conception; and

38 states now have some version of a fetal homicide law.

Together, those assertions are enough for the highest court to reassess whether fetuses qualify as “persons” under the law and can be granted the protection of the 14th Amendment, Thomas Olp, the Society’s vice president and senior counsel, said.

That amendment ensures government does not “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law” or “the equal protection of the laws.”

“There have been significant changes, and the court should take a new look at Roe in terms of those changes,” he said. “Just as it’s important that slaves were human beings and therefore persons protectable by law, now we need to … agree preborn human beings are entitled to protection.”

Essentially, the Thomas More Society’s and Illinois Right to Life’s reasoning is fetuses should be wholly protected by all statutes, not just a few— most notably, fetal homicide laws.

“The position expressed here ignores the actual question facing the Court in the Louisiana case—whether forcing doctors who provide a full range of reproductive health care for their patients to have admitting privileges in a local hospital—[and] elevates the beliefs of politicians and ideologues above concern for women’s health,” Ameri Klafeta, director of the American Civil Liberty Union’s Women’s and Reproductive Rights Project, said. “We reject that view.”

She added the argument detailed in the group’s brief mirrors that heard in the Illinois General Assembly when legislators were debating the Reproductive Health Act. Signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker in June, it enshrined women’s access to reproductive health care as a fundamental right.

Louisiana’s law is similar to one in Texas that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against about five years ago. The justices decided the Lone Star State’s regulation was a “substantial burden” on women’s right to abortion.

Third-quarter surge fuels Warriors’ victory over Rams Full-court defensive pressure helps Willowbrook outscore Glenbard East 20-6 in third period

The Willowbrook girls basketball team beat nearby rival Glenbard East 53-46 in Friday’s non-conference contest in Villa Park.

The Warriors took control of the game in the third quarter, when their pressure defense forced the Rams to commit several turnovers. Glenbard East held a 27-23 lead at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Willowbrook owned a 43-33 advantage.

The Rams cut the Warriors’ lead to as few as six points during the final quarter.

Willowbrook improved its over-

all record to 13-7 with Friday’s win. Glenbard East’s overall record dropped to 13-11.

“We played really good defense in the second half,” said Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell after Friday’s game. “The press worked. At halftime we decided we needed to keep them from crossing half court. The girls came out and did that.”

While the Addison Trail boys basketball team doesn’t have the wins to show for it, it continues to battle teams down to the wire.

In recent action, the Blazers dropped a 47-44 non-conference decision to Maine East and lost 68-66 to West Suburban Conference Gold Division entrant Proviso East. Addison Trail also lost a WSC Gold game to Downers Grove South 56-31.

“We haven’t come out on the good side of any of them,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons, whose team was 3-15 through late last week.

“Downers Grove South got us pretty good, but outside of that game we find ourselves in every game. We just can’t find a way to get over the hump.

“When you are not having success, it would be easy for kids to check out and not be as invested. Up until that Downers Grove South game, the kids have come to play every day and practices have been good. You wouldn’t know what our record is and that’s a testament to the kids. They want to get better, and as coaches we have to find ways to get these allusive wins.”

Addison Trail continues to be led offensively by the likes of A.J. Carlson and Robert Roszkiewicz. Carlson is averaging 17 points a game, while Roszkiewicz, a 6-7 junior, is averaging 15 points.

“They account for a big part of our offense,” said Lyons. “What has been very encouraging is teams ae focusing in on them and we still find ways to get the ball to them and they do things well.”

Lyons said one key remains finding additional scoring options.

“One thing we have stressed since Christmas is finding that consistent third score each night. That could really go a long way in getting us over the hump. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be the same guy.”

Lyons labeled the team’s defensive success as up and down.

“I don’t think we are doing a bad job on defense,” he said. “We are doing some good things. We haven’t settled into playing one defensive consistently. Giving up 68 points to Proviso East, that’s a lot of points to give up. They had about 14 points on breakaways that were uncontested.

“We had a lot of turnovers. Overall, our defense does a good job of keeping us in games, but when you look at things one night it might be free throws hurting us, or shot selection or turnovers. We haven’t been able to get over that hump yet.”

Another positive has been the ability of younger players to contribute this season, Lyons noted.

“Our underclassmen are getting a lot of experience,” he said. “Sammy Renc has played a ton. He’s getting comfortable out there as a sophomore on varsity. He has started pretty much every game. Jacob Daniels is another sophomore who had a couple of good games recently.

“Those are two younger guys who ae playing more. We may not see the full payoff until next year, but they are getting used to the varsity speed and that’s encouraging.”

Hinsdale South is at the top of the league. It’s definitely not going to get easier from a schedule standpoint.”

Baskets by senior Khaylah Richey and junior Kaylan Monday increased the lead to 39-29. Richey added a basket and a pair of free throws to boost the Warriors’ lead to 43-29 with about one minute left in the period.

“They [the Warriors] just picked up the pressure in the third quarter, and they forced a lot of turnovers,” said Glenbard East coach Nicole Miller after Friday’s game.

Glenbard East junior Lauren Huber then scored her team’s only two field goals of the third period. Huber’s driving basket at the third-quarter buzzer cut the Warriors’ lead to 43-33 with eight minutes to play.

Huber and junior Emily Ryan delivered baskets for the Rams early in the fourth quarter to drop the Warriors’ lead to 43-37. Junior Abbey Spada of the Warriors provided a key basket to raise her team’s lead to eight points.

Huber scored another basket to bring the lead down to six points, but junior Annemarie Knudtson made two free throws with 4:55 to play to give Willowbrook a 47-39 lead. Herron’s basket after a steal by Dasbach moved the lead to 49-39.

Huber, who connected on a 3-point shot with about 20 seconds to play to account for the game’s final points, led all scorers with 25 points.

Huber also recorded nine rebounds.

Ryan scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Junior Aubrey Wendorff contributed six points.

Dasbach and Herron both provided 14 points for Willowbrook. Dasbach had 10 rebounds, while Herron snared seven rebounds. Richey provided 10 points and 10 rebounds. She scored eight of her 10 points during the decisive third quarter. Knudtson scored nine points. Spada added four points.

Willowbrook split a pair of West Suburban Gold Conference games last week. The Warriors began the week with a 35-28 win at Hinsdale South on Jan. 14. Dasbach poured in 19 points and made 16 rebounds for Willowbrook, which held a 1613 lead at halftime and a 26-21 edge after three quarters. Herron provided eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors fell to 13-8 overall and 7-2 in the conference following Saturday’s 60-59 loss at Leyden.

Dasbach scored a team-leading 19 points. Herron added 12 points.

The Warriors’ schedule this week includes this Saturday’s conference showdown at Proviso East. The Pirates beat the Warriors in the teams’ first meeting of the season.

Willowbrook girls bowling team continues to improve Warriors finish busy week with a third-place finish at Fenton’s 20-team invite

The Willowbrook girls bowling team continues to make progress.

Although the Warriors lost a 3,045 to 2,994 West Suburban Conference match to Downers Grove South on Jan. 9, senior Ashley DeLeon provided plenty of highlights.

DeLeon shot a personal-best high series of 608 in the meet. She also bowled the Warriors’ best game of the competition with a 242.

DeLeon and senior Makaylah Jones are leading the way for coach Kevin Allen’s squad.

At the Plainfield South Invitational, held before the new year, Willowbrook finished 20th in a 44-team field. Jones had Willowbrook’s high game of the day with a 237.

Sophomore Taylor Balslew also provided a recent highlight when she rolled a 613 series during a competition. That series included games of 233, 193 and 187.

In addition to her performance on the lanes, Allen has been pleased with DeLeon’s leadership abilities, along with those of senior Victoria Salazar.

“Ashley and Victoria have really stepped up and are showing great leadership qualities,” he said. “The scores and positive attitude have been great, and the rest of the girls have been feeding off that energy.”

Allen noted the team has been hard at work at two main concepts in recent weeks.

“We are working on making high-quality shots on the first ball by keeping the ball in play,” he explained. “When we do that, we will either get strikes or leave makeable spares. The second thing we are working hard at is getting better at our spare game. We have been practicing spare shooting and the results are starting to show.”

Willowbrook began a busy week of competition with a home meet against Glenbard East on Jan. 13.

The visiting Rams outscored the Warriors 3,063 to 2,953 at Stardust Bowl in Addison. Jones led Willowbrook with a three-game series score of 535 that included game scores of 181, 172 and 182.

One day later, the Warriors defeated Hinsdale Central 2,784 to 2,321 in a West Suburban Conference dual meet. On Jan. 16, Willowbrook lost a conference meet against York. The Dukes outscored the Warriors 3,376 to 3,087.

Willowbrook placed fourth out of nine teams at Friday’s Hinsdale South Invitational. Jones claimed second place in the event’s individual standings.

On Saturday, Willowbrook earned a third-place finish at Fenton’s 20-team Fred Green Classic at Wood Dale Bowl. Jones bowled a six-game total of 1,234, good for third among all individuals.

Balslew contributed a high game of 246, which propelled her to a threegame series score of 620.

Fenton boys basketball team splits pair of conference games

As a whole, the Fenton boys basketball team’s road trip last week was a positive.

Fenton first headed to Elgin to face Larkin, where it walked away with a 52-46 Upstate Eight Conference victory.

“We really got the ball inside against them,” Fenton coach Chaz Taft said. “We did a good job getting the ball inside to Diamon (King).”

King led Fenton with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Taft noted King shot 9-for-10 from the field. “He was solid with the inside attack, which was good to see.”

Andre Reed added three 3-pointers in the game.

“For sure, it was good to get a win on the road,” said Taft.

Fenton then dropped a five-point decision (43-38) to Glenbard South in overtime in Glen Ellyn in another UEC contest.

“It was pretty much back and forth,” said Taft. “It was a low-scoring game.

Shots were not falling. I wouldn’t be surprised if both teams shot under 30 percent.”

Fenton led 14-10 at halftime. The Bison had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 situation at the foul line with 2.7 seconds to play.

King hits for 19 in win against Elgin-Larkin

The teams traded baskets early in overtime, before a Fenton turnover allowed Glenbard South to take the lead.

“We had our chances to win that game in regulation,” said Taft. “Number-one, we have to take care of the ball, and number-two, is free throws.

Free throws have been our crutch all year.”

Taft said Fenton as a team is in the 50s percentage-wise on made free throws. “We focus all the time on free throws,” he said. “Now, it’s a matter of getting up there and making them.

We have to get better. The good thing is we still have 13 games left plus the playoffs to get it turned around.”

King led Fenton with 16 points against Glenbard South.

Fenton was 11-8 overall and 5-4 in UEC action after the road split.

The Bison played at Elgin earlier in the week and will have a rematch against Glenbard East at home tonight (7 p.m.) before facing Guerin Prep at home Saturday (6 p.m. tip).

“It’s a busy week with a short turnaround,” said Taft. “Extra attention to detail will be key, especially now the second time around in the league. We lost to Glenbard East by one in the first meeting and it was free throws, again.

I think we shot about 47 percent.”

Taft loves the overall progress the Bison program is making. He noted

the freshman A team is 11-6, while the freshman B team has a 10-5 mark.

The sophomore team is 9-8.

“Every level of the program is on

the winning side of it, which is good for us,” he said. “I can’t remember the last time that across the board every level from freshman to varsity had a

winning record. We’re trying to get that at the end of the season, and then you start building something from there.”

Fenton girls basketball team focusing on defense Bison to play second-ranked state teams in Class 3A and 1A in four-day stretch

The Fenton girls basketball team has defense on its mind as the calendar inches closer to the state playoffs.

“We have changed up our defense and are using each game until the state tournament as an opportunity to improve on the defensive side,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello. “Despite the results, the girls are doing what we are teaching them when it comes to defense.

“It’s fun to see them remember what was taught and carry it over to the game. A strength is their ability to carry what we practice over to games, not only on the defensive side of the ball, but also when it comes to some individual offensive skills.”

Mello noted improvement is being seen individually up and down the roster.

“As a team, each girl has improved all their basketball skills,” he said. “The results may not show that each girl is improving, however as coaches we see the day-to-day im-

provement. If we based everything off the results, it wouldn’t look good, however we are looking for each girl to improve daily and we are seeing that.”

Mello stressed statistics tell far from the whole story on both sides of the ball.

“Offensively, again, judging by the scoring, it doesn’t look like there is any progress,” he said. “However, we had individual meetings (last week) and saw the girls improve what we were asking of them. In terms of defensive progress, basing off results, it doesn’t look good.

However, when we watch the film we see them progressing to what we need them to do. The entire season is a work in progress.”

In recent action, Fenton lost 53-44 in Upstate Eight Conference action and dropped a 63-24 UEC game to Glenbard South. The Glenbard South result put Fenton at 7-13 overall and 1-10 in UEC play.

“We can really continue to improve our collective basketball IQ,” Mello

noted. “There are a lot of moments that come up where our inexperience really shows. The more the girls play and the higher level of competition the girls face, that will only help to improve our basketball IQ.” Individually, junior Madison Spencer has been a 3-point threat for the Bison of late “Madison has really found her shot from the 3-point line,” said Mello. “She has been looking to shoot a lot more and the results have been positive.”

Junior Lisette Rodriguez also has provided a spark. “Lisette has been very active at the point of our defense and has been causing problems for the other team,” Mello pointed out. “On offense, her passing from the post allows our shooters to get open looks.”

Mello said preparations are under way for the state playoffs.

Warriors lose heartbreaker to Hinsdale South Buzzer-beating shot lifts Hornets to 51-50 victory

The Willowbrook boys basketball team has suffered a few last-second losses this season. The Warriors endured one of their toughest defeats during last week’s West Suburban Gold Conference game against Hinsdale South.

The visiting Hornets scored a basket as time expired to beat Willowbrook 51-50 on Jan. 14 in Villa Park.

The loss sent the Warriors to 6-12 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

“It’s happened quite a few times,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins, referring to his team’s last-second losses this season. The Warriors lost a pair of last-second decisions at Hinsdale Central’s holiday tournament in late December. The Warriors also won a last-second thriller at that tournament, when senior Everett Stubblefield drained a buzzer-beating shot from behind the half-court line to beat Hinsdale Central in overtime.

“We had ample opportunities,” added Perkins after last week’s loss to the Hornets. “We missed a couple key free throws down the stretch. It’s a game we could have won. We can beat anybody, but we can also lose to anybody.”

Willowbrook rebounded from last week’s loss to the Hornets by beating Downers Grove South 67-57 in Friday’s conference game in Downers Grove. The win over the Mustangs pushed Willowbrook’s conference record to 2-3. The Warriors then fell to 7-13 overall following Saturday’s 67-55 loss to Palatine at Lake Zurich’s Martin Luther King Tournament.

Willowbrook and Hinsdale South were tied at 35-35 through three quarters of last week’s game. The Hornets sank a 3-point shot on the opening possession of the final quarter. They added two more baskets to

finish off a 7-0 run that produced a 42-35 lead and led to a Willowbrook time out with 6:35 to play.

Senior Sam Tumilty scored the Warriors’ first points of the fourth quarter; his basket cut the Hornets’ lead to 42-37. Hinsdale South made a shot from 3-point range to take a 4742 lead. A basket from Tumilty and a free throw from Stubblefield dropped the Hornets’ lead to 47-45 with about 2:20 to play.

Stubblefield gave the Warriors’ their first lead of the quarter when he drained a 3-point shot to give his team a 48-47 lead with about 2:07 remaining. Stubblefield’s driving layup after a steal boosted Willowbrook’s lead to 50-47 with 1:40 to play.

The Hornets, who beat the War-

riors 65-54 in the teams’ first conference meeting of the season in December, scored an inside basket with about 15 seconds left on the clock.

Willowbrook missed a one-and-one free throw with 6.9 seconds left. The Hornets grabbed the rebound and called a time out with 5.9 seconds on the clock.

After the time out, Hinsdale South inbounded the ball and drove the length of the court. One Hornet player made an inside shot, which Willowbrook sophomore Sean Paige deflected off the backboard. Another Hinsdale South player made the rebound and made the game-winning shot as time expired. Hinsdale South’s fans poured onto the court to celebrate the Hornets’ victory.

Stubblefield, who made six shots from 3-point range, led all scorers with 25 points. Tumilty, who made a pair of 3-point shots, added 14 points.

Willowbrook outscored Downers Grove South 23-13 in the second quarter of Friday’s game to build a halftime lead of 39-30. Stubblefield and Tumilty led the Warriors’ scoring attack with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Senior Deandre Holliday, who made a pair of 3-pointers, provided 10 points. Paige and sophomore Cory Baker both scored eight points.

Tumilty scored a team-leading 19 points in Saturday’s loss to Palatine.

He made six baskets, including a pair of 3-point shots, and connected on all five of his free-throw attempts. Stubblefield, who sank all four of his free throws, contributed 16 points. Paige and senior Isaac Gaines both scored six points.

The Warriors’ schedule this week includes conference home games against Proviso East and Leyden.

Willowbrook will battle Leyden this Friday.

The exhibit is a collaborative initiative between the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and the DuPage Monarch Project.

It’s part of the Forest Preserve District’s effort to highlight pollinators through programs, hikes, lectures and performances April to June 2020.

Artists are encouraged to show some diversity in their submissions “Animals are not the only means of pollination,” Strubhart said. “If someone is inspired by how the wind carries pollen, we want to see what a work of art by that person looks like.”

Artists can submit work by filling out an online application form.
