AT alumna to compete in 2018 Olympic Winter Games

When Alexa Scimeca Knierim, a 2009 graduate of Addison Trail, first laced up her skates and stepped onto the rink at Addison Ice Arena at 7 years old, she always dreamt big of where the sport could take her.

Nearly 20 years after starting in ice skating, Scimeca Knierim has accomplished her dream of qualifying to compete in the Olympics.

She and her pairs figure skating partner, Christopher Knierim, won the U.S. Figure Skating Championship on Jan. 6 and were later selected as the pair to represent the

We’re truly honored to have the privilege to represent the United States. We’re looking forward to it and will do our best to make our country proud.”

The duo started skating together in 2012 and nearly made the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Scimeca Knierim said she and Knierim have been through many ups and downs together – including a stomach illness that required her to have multiple surgeries and kept them off the ice for nearly the entire 2016 season

Montini Catholic’s new Photography Club inspires students to see the world in a new light This year, students at Montini Catholic High School in Lombard have been given a unique opportunity to explore their creative side with the inception of its Photography Club (called the Montini Shutterbugs).

The club’s Advisor, Dina Kwit, has always had a passion for photography and an even bigger passion to share her enthusiasm for the lens with young novices.

Kwit, whose son, Ian, is a junior at Montini Catholic, is the owner of Outside the Box Enterprises, a media production company in Elmhurst specializing in sports and lifestyle photography.

“I really wanted to start the Photography Club to give the students at Montini another way to express themselves through the Arts,” she said. “In a world where so many people communicate through social media, photos have become our eyes to the world. The internet has given us the unique opportunity to learn about other people and places via photos on Instagram or Twitter.”

Even though Kwit is impressed with the quickly advancing photo capabilities of smartphones, she said she feels that the art of learning how to use a camera, in a manual sense is a underdeveloped skill.

“Taking a photo with a phone is convenient and fun, but learning how to truly manipulate the composition and colors with a camera, in order to reveal the world as we see it, is a bit more challenging and rewarding.

“Our club focuses (no pun intended she insists) on learning all the areas of the camera,” informed Kwit. She starts students out with the basics of photography—working on manual settings only.

“We complete projects that involve manipulation of shutter speed, aperture, lighting, reflections, portraits and product photography.”

Most recently, Kwit took her students on a “photo walk” in downtown Chicago. “We took the train to the city, walked around and simply photographed life in the big city. It was very interesting to see how differently each of the students viewed the world.”

The group has worked on other themed projects as well, involving fall colors, shutter speed manipulation, reflections and green screen photos, to name a few. “All of our students share their work at our club meetings,” she said. “I think what has been most interesting is to for them to understand that there are many ways to take a great photo and that not everyone sees things the same way.”

Students are learning how to photograph sporting events at Montini as well.

According to Kwit, her students thoroughly enjoyed the many challenges presented with sports photography and they plan on photographing other events and activities as the school year progresses.

Montini’s Shutterbugs meet every other Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. at the school.

Women’s Club visits OHI showrooms for January meeting

It’s a New Year . . . and, for many, the urge to brighten our everyday environment is strong.

Members of the Women’s Club of Addison held their January meeting at OHi in Elk Grove Village to browse their showrooms and view new technologies in kitchen design. Barb Lazzara—an interior decorator from Addison--provided tips on decorating and other small changes that can brighten a room . . . and sometimes our winter attitude. Women’s Club members left the meeting with exciting ideas and ambitious plans.

The Women’s Club of Addison is a service organization that works to support worthwhile charitable causes, enhance our local community, and contribute to the personal growth of its members. Guests are welcome at meetings held on the first Thursday of each month.

Northgate Addison Apartments, located at 900 No. Rohlwing Rd. in Addison was purchased by Becovic Management Group in August of 2016 and has now been renovated into the only Class A apartment community in Addison.

But Scimeca Knierim said they’re ready and excited for the challenge, and her love of the sport is what motivates her each day.

“It’s hard to put into words, but when you’re skating on the ice, you enter a different world – a place where you can let go and have the freedom to express yourself through your body,” she said. “Being on the ice is truly my sanctuary and happy place.”

While the couple lives in Colorado Springs, Colo., to train, Scimeca Knierim never forgets her Addison roots. While at Addison Trail, it was difficult for Scimeca Knierim to trade high school social events and gatherings for training sessions, but, she said, achieving her goal has made all the sacrifice worth it.

She added the teachers and staff at Addison Trail were always there to support her and helped develop a flexible schedule and tutoring to allow her to pursue her Olympic dream.

“Addison will always be a special place to me, because my family still lives there and it’s where my passion for skating began,” she said. “No matter where I go in life, Addison will always be my true home.”

The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games will take place from Feb. 9 to 25 in South Korea.

Patricia James was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. It is alleged that while in his mother’s home, James stabbed his mother multiple times with a kitchen knife.

“Last Tuesday, Patricia James was stabbed to death, allegedly by her own son, Kevin,” Berlin said. “To her surviving family and friends, I offer my sincere condolences on their loss.”

Legislation that would protect insurance coverage for the thousands of Illinois patients with pre-existing conditions sponsored by state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, became law on Jan. 1.

“I have been fighting to protect Illinois residents from unscrupulous insurance companies and ensure that every Illinoisan has access to affordable healthcare,” said Conroy. “This new law to protect coverage for Illinoisans with pre-existing conditions is a victory against the extreme agendas of Washington politicians that threaten to jeopardize the health of so many in our community. This state level protection will guarantee that insurance companies will not determine whether or not working families and residents are allowed access to affordable healthcare because of a pre-existing condition.”

Just reward: A 2017 comeback story for the ages

Lisa Creason’s life changed overnight.

After working as a certified nursing assistant in Decatur for more than a decade, on Oct. 9, 2017, she walked into work as a registered nurse.

It was more than just a title change—more than a pay raise, too. That day, a hard-fought education, a crushing loss, a legislative battle spanning two years and a shot at redemption all paid off.

Creason’s dream had come true.

Her comeback story starts in the same place it ended, Decatur. More than 20 years ago as a teenage single mother, Creason stole money from a sandwich shop cash register in order to feed her daughter. She spent one year in prison as a result.

But she never could have imagined the scarlet letter that crime would become.

Creason fought to rebuild her life over the next two decades. She started a nonprofit to combat violence in her community. She raised three children despite the death of her fiancé. She went back to school, and received a waiver from the state to work as a certified nursing assistant.

But she wanted more. Her earnings weren’t enough for Creason to be completely independent, and she desperately needed to move her family to a safer part of town. She returned to school again to begin the process of becoming a registered nurse.

“I just want to go to work as a nurse, take care of my kids and get off of government assistance,” Creason said at the time. “That’s it.”

After countless hours of work— whether buried in books on the bleachers at her son’s football games or burning the midnight oil with an early-morning shift the next day—Creason graduated with an associate degree in applied science in nursing from Richland Community College.

She called her mom in tears.

“I will never forget coming home from the school and calling my mom and telling her I passed the final. I’m done,” Creason said.

But that wasn’t enough for the state. Despite her graduation, Creason was denied access to the test she needed to become a registered nurse due to the crime she committed decades earlier. She was crushed. But she fought back.

Creason’s struggle took the form of Senate Bill 42. The bill would allow those with forcible felonies on their records (other than sexual

offenses) to seek waivers from the state to obtain health care worker licenses, provided the convictions occurred more than five years prior to applying for a waiver.

Creason drove to the Statehouse every day of legislative session for two years in support of the bill, talking to anyone who would listen about the need to provide second chances for Illinoisans like her.

Against all odds, she succeeded.

After passing the General Assembly and receiving Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature, SB 42 took effect January 2017.

Free to take the test she needed, Creason hit the books yet again in preparation for the final chapter of her journey. She passed. Creason is now a registered nurse in the state of Illinois.

That brings us to 2018.

Illinois still puts up too many barriers for ex-offenders seeking work, driving up the odds of recidivism and costing taxpayers millions as a result. And even for those who haven’t served a sentence, occupational licensing laws can be far too costly for Illinoisans trying to climb the economic ladder.

A November 2017 report from the Institute for Justice showed Illinois imposes particularly harsh restrictions on a number of seemingly arbitrary occupations.

Sign language interpreters in Illinois are required to pay a $900 fee, complete over four years of education, and pass two exams to obtain a license despite the fact that 29 states don’t license the profession at all. A cosmetologist must complete 350 days of educational training to practice in Illinois, but an EMT can be licensed after just 37.

Few individuals possess Creason’s resilience. Most would have just given up. That’s a problem, especially in a state with meager jobs growth and where too many find it in their best interest to leave for greener pastures.

State lawmakers would be wise to re-examine the barriers to second chances and first careers throughout the state.

Don’t make the next Lisa Creason fight you for it.

So why should we pay those who work for us when they don’t do their jobs?

Sadly, many of our own employees are telling us they don’t plan to do much of anything this year. By “our own employees,” I mean public employees, those paid with taxpayer dollars—more specifically, elected Illinois state lawmakers.

There’s a growing sentiment under the dome in Springfield that, because of a number of factors, the 2018 legislative session scheduled to start later this month is going to be a throwaway one.

As in, why should they even bother showing up?

Majority legislators already received their $5 billion income tax increase. They approved a budget last summer for the first time in more than two years, even though it’s unbalanced despite the $5 billion in new tax revenue annually.

And, most significantly, this is an election year, a big one at that.

Vulnerable Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner faces a primary challenge from Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, after a disastrous 2017 in which he signed separate pieces of Democrat-pushed legislation that make Illinois a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants and allow taxpayer funding of elective abortions.

A handful of members of his own party joined majority Democrats to override his veto of the massive tax increase. And he infamously admitted publicly that he isn’t “in charge.”

Powerful House Speaker Michael Madigan, the person who apparently is in charge, also will be trying to hold on to his Democrat majority so he can be rubberstamped to an 18th term as his chamber’s leader.

In recent days, many lawmakers told Illinois News Network that, given what will be among the most contentious and certainly most expensive gubernatorial elections in Illinois history, they don’t expect to accomplish much of anything this year. Some, particularly on the Republican side, even suggested that would be a good thing.

“Generally speaking, the less we meet the less damage can be caused,” Rep. Joe Sosnowski, R-Rockford, said last week. “I think the less that the state legislature does, the better.”

The General Assembly has, in fact, done more harm than good for, well, quite a while now.

Illinoisans paid the highest combined local and state taxes in the nation before last summer’s income tax hike. As a result of that tax burden, more residents are fleeing Illinois than any other U.S. state.

Despite Rauner’s and job creators’ pleas, the General Assembly has done nothing to help reduce the state’s highest-in-theMidwest workers’ compensation costs, which are driving wellpaying manufacturing jobselsewhere as well.

And then there’s the pension crisis. State officials say Illinois’ five public pension systems are underfunded by $130 billion. But actuaries maintain the pension debt probably is more than $200 billion when more realistic rates on investment returns are used to calculate it. Yet legislators sit on their hands and hope the insurmountable debt goes away on its own.

Given Illinois’ mountain of fiscal problems, legislators doing nothing in 2018 would be a dereliction of duty.

“I think that’s the conventional wisdom now, that nothing will get done,” state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said. “But that’s not what the people of this state want.”

What has grown to be a time-honored tradition at Montini Catholic High School has now become a brand new tradition to be celebrated among several graduates of the Lasallian High School.

Every January, a Mother/Son Brunch is held at the Drury Lane (Oak Brook) to honor Montini’s mothers and to thank them for their influence in their sons’ lives as they navigate through the many victories and challenges of high school.

Last month, several alumni and their mothers decided to continue the celebration on their own.

“We always looked forward to Montini’s Mother/Son Brunch when our boys were students. A group of us parents and our sons (most from the Class of 2017) decided to continue the tradition,” said Amy Georgitsis, who is also a Montini grad. “Our boys returned home from colleges on Friday, and on Sunday we got together, attended Mass at Ascension Parish (Oak Brook) and afterwards went to the Drury Lane for brunch.”

“Hopefully this ‘new’ tradition will continue to grow,” Mrs. Georgitsis added.

“Montini’s Mother/Son Brunch has always been a memorable morning and a time for our mothers and sons to spend quality time together,” said President Jim Segredo. “It’s so nice to see that our graduates and parents are starting their own tradition.”

McSweeney—an outspoken critic of the governor despite sharing party affiliation—says, bare minimum, a few things have to be accomplished in the upcoming session: Rauner and lawmakers have to determine a way to pay for $2.8 billion in unappropriated spending from last fiscal year.

And they need to drastically reduce overall spending so a balanced budget can be passed for the next fiscal year. The spending cuts must come through meaningful pension reform, Medicaid reform and other

reductions.

Doing nothing is not an option.

“We don’t deserve to get paid if we don’t pass a balanced budget and cut spending,” McSweeney said.

Lawmakers are paid a base salary of $67,800 annually plus benefits for what already is part-time work. The state’s median household income was just under $60,000 in 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

I agree with McSweeney.

Lawmakers need to do their jobs this year or not get paid. And then voters should fire them.

Willowbrook to host Relay For Life of District 88 All Youth event

At District 88, giving back and helping others is a cornerstone of pride. And one of the district’s main fundraising events is the Relay For Life of District 88 All Youth, which is the culmination of Willowbrook’s Brook Olympics (a weeklong series of events and challenges created to enhance tradition and class spirit and pride at the school). Those events – along with Facial Hair February and “Go Pink” efforts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month – raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

This year is the district’s 8th annual relay. The event will take place on March 10 at Willowbrook and is open to District 88 students and staff.

It will feature yoga, dancing, basketball, volleyball, pingpong, karaoke, games, a moon jump, an iced coffee bar and more. There also will be a luminaria to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer.

Kline Creek Farm present 1890’s ‘Ice Harvest’ Weather permitting, visitors will help cut and transport ice blocks

Visitors are invited to harvest ice the oldfashioned way during the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s “Ice Harvest” Jan. 26 – 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Kline Creek Farm at 1N600 County Farm Road in West Chicago, if ice conditions allow.

Guests will get a glimpse into how families kept food cold before electricity and mechanical refrigeration by helping Kline Creek Farm staff and volunteers score and cut ice into blocks on Timber Lake. They can then help transport the ice to the ice-house, where they’ll see how properly stacking and insulating the ice allows the blocks to stay frozen for months without electricity.

Registration is not needed for the free program, but visitors are encouraged to call the farm in the morning at 630-876-5900 to

ensure ice conditions will allow cutting that day. Regardless of whether ice is cut, staff and volunteers will be on hand to show some of the tools and equipment used and talk about ice cutting and the importance of ice on a farm in the 1890s.

In addition to “Ice Harvest,” Kline Creek Farm will offer smaller ice-cutting demonstrations Feb. 3, weather permitting, at the District’s free “Wonders of Winter” event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mayslake Peabody Estate at 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

Senior Lifestyle January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month In recognition that January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, VNA Health Care wants women to know that cervical cancer is a highly preventable and treatable cancer, but only if women take the steps to get screened and vaccinated. In 2018, an estimated 13,240 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 4,170 will die from the disease.

The current recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding cervical cancer screening is having a pap smear every 3 years for women age 21-65. Women age 30 to 65 years who want to lengthen the screening interval may opt to have a pap smear with human papillomavirus (HPV) testing every five years. Vaccinations

can protect people from getting the types of HPV that most often cause cancer and genital warts. Vaccines that protect against the types of HPV that cause 90% of cervical cancers, as well as several other diseases and cancers, are recommended to be given to girls and boys ages 11 to 12 years of age.

About 80% of women will get HPV at some point in their life, but in the vast majority of women these virus will not cause any symptoms or problems. HPV infections that don’t go away can cause changes in the cervix cells, and those changes can lead to cervical cancer. This happens over 10 to 20 years. Many women younger than 30 will have HPV, but these infections are more likely to go away.

Every winter, Lake Geneva hosts Winterfest, a nine day festival that celebrates art, winter, family, and fun.

Winterfest is home to the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition, (January 31-February 4) where fifteen teams of the most talented snow sculptors and artists from around the country gather to compete for a national title. The entire competition is open to the public, so Winterfest attendees can actually watch the artists at work!

The Cadillac North American Snow Festival (NASF) takes place during the first weekend of February every year in Cadillac, MI. Fenton wrestling team enjoys trip to California Bison competed in tournament at Clovis High School; enjoyed Bay Area sites

The Fenton wrestling team has a heck of a “What did you do on your Christmas vacation?” story.

The Bison headed to the Bay Area of California where it not only wrestled in the 110-team Doc Buchanan Invitational tournament in Clovis, California, but also enjoyed tremendous team-bonding opportunities during a variety of activities throughout the area.

“We had the privilege of attending one of the most challenging and prestigious tournaments,” said Fenton coach Brian Hastings.

But there was much more than wrestling to take in on the trip.

Sixteen Fenton wrestlers and five coaches flew to San Francisco on Jan. 3. The Fenton contingent had the opportunity to run four miles onto the historic Golden Gate Bridge and explore the city of San Francisco.

From there, Fenton traveled to Fresno which acted as the group’s base camp. The following day, Fenton practiced at Fresno State University and received words of encouragement from Fresno State head coach Troy Steiner.

Then, the group drove into the Sierra Nevada mountains and hiked

in Sequoia National Park where the group viewed giant sequoias and redwoods and was able to climb up Big Baldy Mountain, which Hastings noted offered “unbelievable views of the Redwood Canyon.”

On the Thursday night of the trip, the Fenton contingent watched a college dual meet between Fresno State and Cal Poly.

The next day, Fenton headed to Clovis High School where it competed against 109 other schools.

Hastings pointed out of those schools in the tournament, five were ranked in the top 25 in the country.

Overall, 13 states and Canada were represented in the tournament.

“There were about 50 nationally ranked wrestlers at the tournament,” said Hastings. “Although we could have done better, we did compete well.”

Fenton finished 46th out of 110 teams in the event. Dylan Butts won two matches and lost a close match to the third-place finisher at 182 pounds. Brandon Koskiewicz won two matches at 138 pounds, while Jack Butts, Isaiah Brock and Jeremy Piskorz each won a match.

On Saturday, Fenton went hiking at the San Joaquin River Gorge where the group hiked down to the river, went rock climbing and

jumped into the chilly water. The group returned to Clovis to watch the finals and many of the best wrestlers in the nation.

“We witnessed the finals and many of the best wrestlers in the nation squaring off against each other,” said Hastings. “The matches and skills of these grapplers were inspiring.”

The trip was topped off with, as Hastings put it, “an exceptional visit to Yosemite National Park.”

The Addison Trail boys basketball team is in the midst of one of the busier parts of its schedule.

“We are playing a lot of games in a short amount of time,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons.

In a recent stretch, the Blazers dropped a 50-49 West Suburban Conference Gold Division game to Leyden, defeated Maine East 70-54 as part of the Lake Zurich tournament, lost to Proviso East 62-43 in WSC Gold play and defeated Richmond-Burton 62-43 as part of the Lake Zurich tournament.

In the Leyden contest, the Blazers held a four-point lead with 18 seconds left in regulation. “There was a big turnover and they hit a shot to cut it to one and then they hit two

free throws late to win it,” Lyons explained. “It was a tough one on the road.”

In the Maine East contest, which was a preliminary game in the Lake Zurich tournament, Lyons noted his team started the game off strong.

“We got out to a hot start and shot it well,” he said. “Fifty-four points is a lot more than we want to give up, but we still defended well. Adam Mehmeti and Connor Palesch both shot it well. We had the lead throughout the game and were able to push back against them.”

Addison Trail then encountered the top team in the WSC Gold in Proviso East. “Proviso is at the top of the conference and hadn’t lost yet,” said Lyons. “We battled the whole night.

We were down by eight points at half and 10 by the end of the third. We were forced to do some things that we don’t normally do and they took advantage of it.”

After playing Proviso on a Friday night, Addison Trail came right back to play Richmond-Burton the

following morning. “We were kind of sluggish at first,” he said. “We finished at 9 p.m. the previous night and were playing again at 11:30 a.m.

Defensively, we gave up 43 points and found a way to compete for four quarters when energy-wise we were not at our best.”

Lyons pointed out the consistency of Palesch, AJ Parnell, Mehmeti and JT Daniels. “Connor has shot it well the last couple games,” he said. “Over the break he had seven 3-pointers in two different games.

He’s been very consistent from the perimeter. AJ has stepped up the past couple weeks. He’s doing a lot of things offensively. JT and Adam have logged a ton of minutes and are helping with scoring and defending.

They’ve been solid all-around.”

Addison Trail was 10-9 overall and 0-5 in WSC Gold play through late last week. The Blazers had two more games remaining in the Lake Zurich tournament before returning to action Saturday against Hinsdale South.

“We would like to thank everyone who supported this endeavor,” said Hastings.

Fenton returned to dual-meet action recently with contests against Aurora Central Catholic, Glenbard West, Homewood-Flossmoor and St. Francis.

The Willowbrook girls bowling team is a on a roll.

Through late last week, Willowbrook was 7-0 overall in dual-meet action and was 5-0 in West Suburban Conference play.

In a recent win against Leyden at Stardust Bowl, the Warriors shot a 3,023 team score. Junior Holly Helsper had a 618 series against Leyden with games of 212, 202 and 204. Junior Brianna Bryant had a 553 series with games of 163, 204 and 186.

In a recent meet against York, Helsper shot the conference high series of the season with a 693. Bryant shot the team’s conference high game of the season, a 241, against Addison Trail. Willowbrook also recently took second at the Streamwood Invitational.

Helsper leads the team in conference average at 198. Senior Dana Sasenick, junior Katherine Pettinger and Bryant all are averaging 174, while sophomore Makaylah Jones is at 166.

“We are doing an excellent job of taking initiative at practice,” said Willowbrook coach Kevin Allen. “I see our girls constantly talking to each other about their technique and what they are doing that could be improved. The focus they show at every practice is showing during matches and invites. During our matches, I see girls are always cheering for each other no matter what the situation may be. We have had a great overall positive outlook at every match and invite.”

Allen noted the Warriors have been focused on the shot-making skills.

“The area the girls have improved the most is in their shot-making,” he said. “We talk a lot about their first shots in the frame. If they make a quality first shot, then they either will strike or leave an easy and makeable spare, which impacts their overall score. The girls are working hard at understanding every pin counts on every shot.”

The Warriors also are tuned in to the mental side of the game, Allen noted. “We still are working hard at grinding out games,” he said. “When the girls have a tough game in which they might not be scoring their best, they need to try and grind out a score that will help the team.”

Allen cited particularly strong recent improvement from the likes of Bryant and Helsper. “Brianna and Holly have really improved their games,” he said. “They have been working very hard on their games and it shows. At practice, Brianna

and Holly always are working hard at different parts of their games.

These girls have been impressive in practice and in conference matches.”

Allen noted Bryant had a 604 series and a 241 high game against Addison Trail, while Helsper’s conference-high 693 against York including games of 222, 235 and 236.

“We expect these types of scores to keep coming from these two standouts,” said Allen.

Willowbrook recently competed in the Hinsdale invitational at Brunswick Zone in Woodridge and Wood Dale. The Warriors have conference contests remaining with Downers Grove North, Hinsdale South and Downers Grove South.

“This season has been a great one for us,” said Allen. “We are excited for all the invites and matches that are yet to come. The girls have been working very hard on their techniques and their understanding of the game.”

Elmhurst College presents ‘Travel as a Political Act’ TV host, author Rick Steves to discuss transformational power of travel

On Friday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m., travel expert Rick Steves, best known as the host of the acclaimed PBS television series Rick Steves’ Europe and the author of several bestselling guidebooks, will present Travel as a Political Act, part of the Roland Quest Lecture Series at Elmhurst College.

It will be held in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Steves believes there is more to travel than good-value hotels, great art and fine cuisine. Americans who “travel as a political act” can enjoy themselves and come home with a better understanding of the interconnectedness of today’s world.

In a slideshow lecture, drawing on lessons learned while exploring Europe, Central America, Asia and the Middle East, Steves will talk about the transformational power of travel, and how to travel thoughtfully and gain a broader perspective.

After the lecture, Steves will be available to sign copies of the latest edition of his book Travel as a Political Act, which also will be available for purchase. Seasonal influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory virus that can cause mild to severe illness. Symptoms of the flu virus include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. Flu is spread primarily when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

“The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated,” said Dr. Terry Mason, NIPHC President and Chief Operating Officer of the Cook County Department of Public Health. “We know the best way to protect yourself and your family from getting sick is by getting the flu shot. The vaccine prevents millions of illnesses and tens of thousands of hospitalizations every year, and can lessen the severity of symptoms.”

In addition to getting the flu shot, follow these simple steps to help prevent the spread of the flu: • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

• If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, except to get medical care or for other necessities.

(Fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

Willowbrook has announced the school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Industry & Technology Department recently earned accreditation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). The NATEF has a 5-step accreditation process to evaluate a school’s automotive service program, including its structure, processes, resources, materials and mission.

The high school was recognized for meeting the standards of quality for the training of automobile technicians at the Maintenance and Light Repair level.

“The NATEF certification is great for Willowbrook students and parents, because it makes certain our automotive program meets strict industry demands and ensures students a high-level education,” said Chris Dunk, CTE Industry & Technology teacher.

CTE Department Chair Mary Barney agreed.

Slices of life

Football is a big deal at my house. I live with a bunch of guys who love the game. My daughter married a guy who loves the game. It only makes sense I’d be pulled into the gridiron mix.

As such, I’ve contemplated certain intricacies about the game. Not the rules or playing strategies or scoring methods, but the really important stuff.

For instance: why is it called football?

The ball doesn’t look anything like a foot. Maybe a large, rounded pointy toe – if your creativity allows you such a transmutation, but certainly not a whole foot.

The technical name for a football’s shape (I did the Google) is a prolate spheroid, which is the shape of a pig’s bladder, which is what the first footballs were made from. That’s why they call it a pigskin. (No pigs were harmed or injured during this NFL season. Now the balls are made of leather.)

The game itself involves mostly throwing, catching and carrying the ball – in one’s hands. Except for the kicker, no one uses his feet for anything other than running and that’s hardly a reason to name an entire game after the foot.

The playing field is measured in yards, and a yard is technically three feet, but you never hear the announcer say third down and 12 feet to go.

They’d say third and four – as in yards.

In other countries, our American soccer is called football, which makes

more sense because soccer (or football depending on where you live) predominately involves kicking the ball – with one’s feet.

There’s probably not a logical explanation for the name. Some things you just have to take at face value. Football is football – unless, of course, it is soccer.

To some, the misnomered sport becomes bigger than just a game. And not just for the guys I live with. It mimics life. The parallels are practically endless.

In life – and football – sometimes you are on the offense, sometimes on defense. You have to be competent in both and know which one to play and when.

In both, success is most often a result of teamwork. There is no “I” in football. I can’t say the same for life so I guess my clever analogy stops there.

Players and people spend quality and quantity time trying to reach goals or goal posts all in search of the big “W” because winning is the objective

of football, life and just about anything else worth playing.

Football and life are serious business, not to be taken lightly. But a little levity along the way often enhances the heavier moments. At least it makes them more bearable. This is exactly why the coffee break and timeout commercials were invented. Dilly dilly.

We all have to tackle life’s obstacles and try to run with an idea whenever we perceive a gap in the defense. An occasional fumble is inevitable for just about everyone. You don’t want to go off sides or leave anything incomplete.

Sometimes we have no alternative but to dive head first into a pile of formidable opponents to push forward past the goal line to win the prize.

I haven’t always been a football aficionado, nor did I recognize the many relevant and significant ways the game impacts my life. It started a few years ago with a friendly family fantasy football competition. The first two years I came in dead last. This year I won. I guess some of my well-honed football knowledge is useful after all. That’s a touchdown by any stretch of the pigskin.

Chins, necks, aging, getting checked out I recently posted a photo of me on Facebook, a side view of my face, sitting and smiling at an event. I made the comment, intending to be funny, that my neck and chin are now becoming one entity and I have no name for it.

The merging of my butt and legs I’ve deemed the bleg. For chin and neck melting together, I asked for suggestions for a good word for that.

A few people rode my humor, but then all the comments started to come in to tell me how beautiful I still am.

Why, thank you very much for sure, but the post was a silly about the signs of aging. My chin does not have the same line of distinction it did when I was a decade younger. I was not looking for compliments or reassurance. I was not complaining, I was hoping for laughs.

I’m okay with the loose flesh under my chin. Tis life. I am happy (over the moon joyful) to be this age, saggy neck and all. Yet the ladies chimed in to tell me I’m “still beautiful.”

zipped up and down the aisles, I noticed not one, but two, different gents in my general age demographic give me a second look. I smiled to myself, “I’ve still got it! And sorry fellas, I’m taken.”

Then I saw my reflection as I was leaving the store and realized my sunglasses pushed back on top of my head had created a tall six-inch high floppy mohawk kind of thing with my hair.

Yeah, I got a second look alright. They were wondering what kind of flippity flappity featherish thing had landed on my head. I looked kind of like an odd kewpie doll/troll mashup. Yes, I’ve still got it! Absolutely!

Physical beauty is such a subjective and interesting phenomena. We all

know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My husband, my beholder, compliments me all the time. And not just on my looks. As much as I want my Prince Charming to like my outer, I want him to appreciate more the inner me. And he does.

I tell him the same. I love his physical outer shell. I think he is handsome/ gorgeous/so dang cute. And even more, I like the amazing man that he is. I think all happy couples are like that. We love the outer package of our mate for sure, and we are deeply devoted to the prize inside.

Perhaps the tide is turning in society, yet it seems that no matter what we say about girl power/women’s movement/ etc., we still tend to care about our looks, perhaps a little too much. Yes, I care about my physical appearance. I want to look nice. And yet I if I gave a speech and asked how it went, and the response was, “Well, you looked pretty,” I wouldn’t be flattered.

Anyway, the post about neck/chin did circle back to comments of smiley faces and LOLs. When I re-read, I saw it was my fault that the tide had turned to reassurance because I started it by saying, “Sigh. My chin and my neck…” If I had omitted the sigh, the lovely friends probably would not have felt obliged to give comfort instead of humor.

I was just trying to keep it light. And keep our chins up. (And FYI, we think “check” is a good term for the chin/ neck coming together.)

Young Hearts for Life returns to District 88 Students urged to register; volunteers needed Attention, District 88 parents/ guardians – time is running out to register your student for the Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) Cardiac Screening Program.

The sign-up deadline for Willowbrook is Jan. 25, and the deadline for Addison Trail is Feb. 1.

District 88 is committed to ensuring the safety, health and well-being of its students. As part of that mission, the district has partnered with YH4L, a not-for-profit organization affiliated with Advocate Charitable Foundation, to offer free electrocardiograms (ECGs) to identify high school students at risk for heart con-

ditions that could lead to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). District 88 highly encourages parents/guardians to register their student for this program, and details can be found online at dupage88.net/YH4L2018 • Willowbrook’s screenings will take place on Feb. 15 at the school.
